Well let's see, two Apple Stores within about 5-10 miles to the south,
another about 15 miles north. And MacWorld about 28 miles north.

Re: Intel Macs....

2006-01-11 Thread Michael Cangelosi
Though the term Low-End-Mac seems inappropriate for a 2K - 2.5K
laptop; the common underpinning under all of these computers is the OS.
While unfortunately the latest Al-Books don't allow booting to OS9, and
there are some discussions on this list regarding OS9 problems; this
lack of functionality hasn't stopped the inclusion of said 'books. One
of the most effective things regarding the Apple system is the community
that has built around it, and welcomed new Win'tel converts. Whether
you believe this latest move on Apple's part is good or bad, to begin to
dissolve that community for simply a means of protest against a bit of
silicon seems silly and does a disservice to this list and the potential
transfer of knowledge through discussion.

If those published stats hold up to real world comparisons, that's
 one helluva impressive laptop.

Before we wet our collective pants on this one, best first check out:

http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archives/2006/01/the_mac_perform
.html

Inter alia, in notes:

Apple used multiprocessor benchmarks to skew the performance advantage that
its Intel-based machines enjoy compared to single-core PowerPC G4 and G5.
Apple used the industry-standard SPEC suite components SPECint2000 and
SPECfp2000, but here's the catch: Apple used SPECint_rate2000 and
 SPECfp_rate2000.

The article is a two-minute read.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but had to ask. This list does focus on
the G3/G4 series of 'book, regardless of the OS. There's a separate
list tho, for the older powerbooks-- 040 and up---different
processors, different OS (sometimes :) ), different list.

I already run my 17 monitor at 832x624, and often hit make text

Installing OS X and apps was problematic. Kept running into dialogs

to use a magnifying glass.

There are apps and system pref panes that are very difficult to use

Frustrating.
Never had this problem with OS 9.

Interesting; with this switch to the beginning of abandoning Classic
(not only booting to OS9 but rather the entire software that runs under

Well said, Michael. I have used Macs exclusively since 1985 and enjoy
the lists I am on, learning from them all. I will admit to a tinge of
discomfort when I heard about intelmacs. But last night I watched Jobs'
Macworld presentation via the Apple site and must admit to feeling the
urge to pony up for the new iMac. When one moves forward there is always
something to be left behind... I hope there are no deal breaker issues
with this transition.

I also wouldn't be shocked if Leopard (10.5) dropped support for a

I suspect the laggy performance is being compared to systems with
better video, or all the OpenGL doodad options being turned on, or
sluggish networks, because GE slurps bandwidth like crazy. (If you're
on an Airport with you, your wife, the kids and three mooching

It runs quite nicely on my system, an 800 MHz G4 with an original
radeon card, and a 10 mbit ethernet connection.

Google is rewriting a Windows-Only app to run on multiple architectures.

You can do that by making a separate app for every architecture, or
do it the way they are, use a cross-platform library. (They're using
QT http://www.trolltech.com) By their nature, cross-platform
libraries tend to be less efficient.

I suppose you could make GE work on low-end hardware by getting in
there and hand-coding assembler, but, then, if that was the way to
develop we'd never get GE on any platform.

Applecare on Powerbooks ?

2006-01-11 Thread Amber R.

Hello everybody,

I have just had a very frustrating conversation with Applecare and
was told that the keyboard and latch on my Powerbook are not covered
at all.

I am still under the Applecare warranty period and was actually told
by Applecare technical support that these items were covered.

However, in talking with customer care, they have advised me that
Applecare only covers hardware. Are the latch and keyboard not
considered hardware ?

Has anybody here had any problems with getting these two items
repaired under Applecare ?

Perhaps like batteries they are considered 'normal wear' items and as
such aren't covered? Although it would be nice for these things to be

in the day. And their cost estimate was $400. Ended up buying used
parts on LEM Swap and doin it myself.

I know on the backlight keyboards they will replace them if the
backlight fails. I know someone who got it replaced..

Hi Amber,

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Ask to speak with a supervisor and clearly EXPRESS your position that
this is hardware by definition.

An Apple-branded mouse and keyboard are also covered under the Plan
if included with the Covered Equipment (or purchased with a Mac mini).

Re: 10.4.4 and update for ... PB's ?

2006-01-11 Thread Howard Katz
Has anyone tried RealPlayer (version 10.0.0 (331)) with 10.4.4? I
updated OS X this afternoon, and I can't get RP to work with the
radio stations I've been listening to for months using 10.4.2 and
.4.3--it starts to open them and then just hangs there. I deleted the
preferences file, and still no luck.

I CAN listen to the same stations using Windows Media Player--but I
hate having to use Windows-anything unless I have to. RealPlayer
tells me I have the most current version, too.

This obviously isn't an earth-shattering problem, but I just hate it
when something that used to work, stops. :)

To turn a DVD player into a multi-region player, you need to apply a
non-official, hacked firmware that removes the limitation of that stupid
region check. There are some risks associated with this but everytime I did
it, it went fine.

Now, you would need to find if somebody came out with a firmware for your
specific model. Do a Google search on matshita firmware and you should get
a few hits.

Amber - this is patently untrue. Call again and if this tech support
person makes the same claim, firmly but politely request that your call be
transferred to a supervisor. The first person you talk to is a gatekeeper
whose job is to make you go away.

I've had three keyboards replaced. My first iBook lost the 'e' key and
without question the tech support woman immediately asked for confirmation
of my address to send a new keyboard. My second iBook the keyboard failed
entirely and I was warned that when I returned the original keyboard it
would be examined for abuse and water damage and I might be charged full
price. I was quoted $99 if I remember correctly. I was not charged.

My current PowerBook has had 2 keyboard replacements. The first developed a
stuttering '5' key - sometimes it wouldn't type and other times it double
typed. Of course the PowerBook keyboard isn't user replaceable. It was
replaced under warranty. This winter the latch began to sporadically fail to
close. This was repaired under AppleCare extended warranty AND when it was
returned the paperwork mentioned a new keyboard. The backlighting had
stopped working on the number keys and I guess the tech noticed it. I didn't
care and hadn't even thought about getting it repaired.

BTW, if you have a local Apple store or independent dealer you might want to
deal locally rather than over the phone. I think it is much easier to say
no to a voice over the phone than a up close and personal.

Re: Applecare on Powerbooks ?

2006-01-11 Thread Sharon Kantanie
Part of the plastic came off the battery latch of my dual USB iBook
a few years ago and Applecare would not replace it, saying that this
problem could have only been caused by user abuse, not a defective
latch. I know I didn't abuse my iBook, but after talking to several
techs, the only option I was given was getting a new encasement at my
own expense. I actually resorted to a cheaper solution of using tape
to hold in the battery.

Re: 10.4.4 and update for ... PB's ?

2006-01-11 Thread Harry Corsover
I ran Software Update earlier today on my AlBook 15 1.25GHz, 1GB
RAM. I just launched RealPlayer 10.0.0 and clicked on a radio station
and I'm listening as I type this. I had not used it for this before,
so I had no stations selected as Preferences.

Re: Applecare on Powerbooks ?

2006-01-11 Thread Terry McCune

Hello everybody,

I have just had a very frustrating conversation with Applecare and
was told that the keyboard and latch on my Powerbook are not covered
at all.

I am still under the Applecare warranty period and was actually told
by Applecare technical support that these items were covered.

However, in talking with customer care, they have advised me that
Applecare only covers hardware. Are the latch and keyboard not
considered hardware ?

Has anybody here had any problems with getting these two items
repaired under Applecare ?

Amber

OK Amber, no more Ms. Nice Girl. It's time to unleash that inner Junk
Yard Dog that's within all of us.
Keyboard and latches are hardware. Any one who says differently is
rolling a barrel of bushwah.
Ask to go higher on the food chain. Drop hints that you're consulting
an attorney. Mention the Better Business Bureau, the Ministry of
Consumer Affairs (if you're in Canada) or some consumer rights group.

Titanium Battery Compatibility?

2006-01-11 Thread David Rodriguez
I wonder if somebody can confirm for me whether a battery from either/
both a G4 667 Gigabit Ethernet, or DVI Titanium Powerbook, is
IDENTICAL and INTERCHANGEABLE with G4 800 DVI Titanium?

Newertech brand appears to be the same. But are Apples? TIA

Dave

Re: http://lowendmac.com/musings/06/0109.html

2006-01-11 Thread P . Turtle-Bear Guillermo
Are literally using a magnifying glass? How about using the built in
zoom function of OS X? It may take some getting used to it, but I have
found it valuable.

I'm using Panther, so here are my instructions:
Go to System Preferences-Universal Access-Seeing-Turn On Zoom

In this window you will see the key commands for zooming in and out. I
have my 15-inch PowerBook set to its native resolution of 1280 X 854.

Also, in Safari's prefs you can set a default text size that will work
for most websites.

Installing OS X and apps was problematic. Kept running into dialogs
that displayed off the bottom of the screen; couldn't reach the
buttons! And sometimes, it forced the monitor to 1024x768 - so I had
to use a magnifying glass.

There are apps and system pref panes that are very difficult to use --
they have dialogs with controls that end up below the bottom edge of
the screen. And since you cannot move a window up, in OS X...

Frustrating.
Never had this problem with OS 9.

If you are willing to drive to Fremont, DTT Macintosh Services there
