Because new hardware=updated software. Every time Apple makes a new
computer, they update the current version of the system to work with the
new hardware and ship it with that. If they made it possible to run an
older OS on new machines, they would have to use OLD hardware supported
by the older system, which completely demolishes the point of buying a
new computer. You wouldn't buy a new computer, only to find it uses old
outdated hardware. That's basically why old systems don't work on new
hardware.

I don't think increasing the RAM speed would help at all. The Lombards
have a 66mhz bus speed, so having faster RAM won't help; the RAM will
always reduce back to the bus speed. Prehaps there was some kind of
mobo damage in the past, which also affected the other ram module? BTW,
I've had trouble installing 10.2 multiple times on my perfectly working
Beige G3; I had to try many times until one time it finally completed
installing. I also once had a Duo 280c that would run fine when
connected with the power adaptor, but when run off of a battery it would
freeze often, sometimes when it was just idling. And when booted it
would occasionally stay at a black screen and make a "farting" noise :/
Finally out of frustration I put my foot through it and, well, that was
that. Mac problems can be very hard to figure out, as you are
experiencing here. You might eventually be forced to purchace a whole
new mobo :(

That's my 3 cents worth

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
I mean put a big load on an inverter without protection and you will
overheat it and something will blow. That's what happened to a VERY
cheap 50 watt inverter I had a long time ago...it didnt even have a
heatsink!! The whole case on my new one is made out of heatsink
material, and its got a fan in it to prevent this...I wasn't talking
about a 130 watt _inverter_ I was speaking about the _load_ :P

Ok, I know what you're trying to say. But in a couple of years Apple
might stop using the current type of power adaptor plug and then you
have to sink another 20 bucks to get another auto adaptor, whereas if
you get an inverter you can keep it over the years, given it keeps
running (it shouldn't die really soon, unless you have a 130 watt power
adaptor or something :) To the original author of the thread, I guess
it comes down to form vs wallet, whichever is better in your opinion.

How so? I have had a 150 watt power adaptor, as cheap as could be
(found it at a cheap hardware/gift shop store) and it has worked
wonderfully to watch movies, play games, etc. in the car. How could an
auto adaptor be "safer" for your laptop, other than be more efficient?
The advantage of the inverter is that you can plug different kinds of
things in, too, such as a TV, cd player, small sound amp, you name it.
I dont see how inverters could be unsafe, especially when they have
built in fuse protection and undervolatage protection. Could you be
more specific?

If you're looking for cheap, and I mean REALLY cheap, go here and check
this out: http://astro.temple.edu/~moshe/intersil/ I bought a 10 dollar
Syntax USB-400 usb tab, just to try this out, and it works surprisingly
well. Its cheap, and the drivers that come with it are windows, but no
worries. D-Link has drivers that you can modify to recognize the Syntax
instead, and it works just like D-Link's, only 1/3 the price. Its only
802.11b, but the range is pretty good and the price is awesome.
However, if you aren't using OS X then this doesn't help much...

iBook G4 ext Batt

2005-02-01 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Hello, I have a 14 hour plane flight coming up and, wanting to watch
movies/play games the whole time, I built a 15 D-cell battery pack. The
fully charged voltage is 24.2 volts. I searched on Google and found
that the power port on Apple's new laptops are standard 2.5mm stereo
audio jacks (surprise!) so I connected the pack (with the polarity in
mind) to a 2.5mm plug, connected to the ibook, and it works. My
question is: at what voltage will the iBook so into sleep mode, if at
all? I heard somewhere not to go under 12 volts, to avoid damage to the
iBook; is this true?

Re: sticky keyboard

2005-01-24 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Ok, but why should I need to remove all the keys, like so many ppl have
suggested? Its not all over the keyboard, just in one corner, and to
tell u the truth...I don't know exactly what fell beneath the keyboard
that made it stickey. The main part of the stickyness is on the corner
of the keyboard, in range of a small paintbrush, and the rest is in
_very_ small portions throughout the left side of the keyboard, so it
sounds like just dipping it over and over in water, getting that one
part w/ a paint brush, and leaving it to dry for days should work.

BTW, I wasn't thinking of using soap, but why no hairdryers? cm-high
water entered my dad's Dell Latitude (we are all mac ppl now, that was
his last Windows machine), and I revived it with a hairdryer (again,
this was the dog's doing; he causes much computer destruction :)

Re: stickey keys

2005-01-24 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Yes, I was thinking that completely washing it should work, like they do
with compact Mac mobos in dishwashers. To replace the whole keyboard in
the event that washing it doesn't work, I was thinking something like
this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25444&item=5159357049&rd=1
Would this work? I looked at the clamshell keyboard, and the cable
seems to lack some pins so it would appear that its a no-go on an iBook
G4, but the cables on this 700mhz iBook are identical to the ones on my
iBook G4, its just that the keys are more transparent.

BTW, I did also see those keyboard skins and thought they were cool too
;D

I checked ebay and the cheapest keyboards are, of course, the
semi-transparent ones that are on the G3 & clamshell ibooks. Question:
do ibook G3 keyboards work on ibook G4s? I know that that'll look
tacky, but being a student one must be looking at the prices more than
the looks :) I'm fairly sure they do work, I just have to double-check
here.

Doing so will *not* damage the keyboard? BTW, I have replaced
individual keys on my mom's clamshell keyboard (after the dog had been
"digging" into the keyboard with those razor-sharp claws) and I had
quite the trouble with only a couple keys, so removing and then
replacing keys on a whole half of a keyboard would b quite a task I
should think!

stickey keys

2005-01-23 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Hi! I just joined this list, being a long-time member of the Compacts
list. I have a problem: A month or two ago, a friend of mine spilled
some soda onto my ibook G4's keyboard. Now the keys, specifically those
on the left side, stick and take a second or two to come back up. What
is suggested to fix this problem? Any liquids that won't hurt it?

OTOH, if you upgrade to OSX 10.3 on that mac of yours, no problemo!
share away! set the native file sharing on both systems, enable
'Windows file Sharing' in the sharing control panel of OS X and
you're set.
I think that is also available in 10.2 :D

Never heard of USB file tranfering, but infared might work. That is,

It's Done it AGAIN!! And this time I switched from Microsoft PowerPoint

Immediate Question: How to fix it? I HAVE to use Microsoft Office for
school (b/c my stupid school uses fricking winblows), so Microsoft apps
are unavoidable. Sorry if I sound really anoyed and upset, but I am

My bad, I should have been more clear. Safari is hidden in the background
(open-apple, h). Then when I am in another application and click on the
Safari icon in the dock it brings up the safari window, shows the clock or
spinning-colored-wheel cursor, and then brings up the restart dialog box.

Safari Weird Crash

2004-01-04 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
I have a really weird problem:

When I use another application in Mac OS X 10.3 and switch to safari (which
is running in the background) I get a message that says "You need to restart
your computer. Press and hold the power button..." I can't force quit or
anything, only restart. I have nothing running that is unusual and I have
more than enough free memory (total physical RAM: 256MB) If it helps to
specify my computer, it is an iBook G4 800MHz 12".

Resolution on both 12" iBook and 12" Powerbook is 1024x768, Millions of

Sadly (for me and my iBook) I think you are right. I have no Cardbus/PCMCIA
slot, just the compartment for the airport card under the keyboard. I
thought the first Powerbook G4 12" didn't have cardbus, but the new one
probably does.

The computer I am typing on that I recently bought is a iBook G4 800MHz
12" and I can't seem to be able to mirror or even use an external monitor
with the included adapter. Does anybody know how to get the external
monitor to function on the iBook?

 (Moving On)

From what I have read, the iBook and the PowerBook 12" are almost the
same; they both use the same LCD screen, have basically the same bus and
processor speed (that is, if you are talking about the G4 iBook), and, I
believe, they have the same monitor output. The main advantages are the
SuperDrive, size and weight, and the stylish case design. The iBook G4 that
I have is very small, and it even fits in a PowerBook Duo carry case! Also,
unless the 15" monitor you are talking about has capabilities of 1024x768
resolution or better, it will not be any advantage over the built-in LCD
screen, as the iBook and PowerBook 12" both have max resolutions of
1024x768. I actually prefer the LCD over a CRT.

I don't think Microsoft completely ditched it, simply because nothing short
of Windows Media Player 9 could play my ASF files, and nearly all tapeless
camcorders these days output the video to the ASF format. Perhaps there was
an earlier version of ASF that was dumped and now Microsoft "created" a new
version? Anyway, I found a simple video converter (for windoze :( that can
convert any movie Windows Media Player 9 can read into mpeg1, mpeg2, dvd,
vcd, svcd, or avi with a choice of codecs. (the converter is called EasyX
Video Converter, such an original name...) Quicktime on my iBook can read
the converted files and imports nicely into iMovie. For now, this will have
to do (at least until a mac version is made...

This is puzzling, because many companies, including Gateway, just released
their own tapeless camcorders, most output the videos in ASF format. Is ASF
"coming back from the grave?" But even so I searched the internet for a
while and only found one application (for windoze :( that could convert
the ASF files. I tried it, and it worked, but it produces a watermark on
the converted .AVI files unless purchased for $24.99 (double-bummer). This
is my only option unless someone in the programming community makes an ASF
converter for Mac when Microsoft comes out with Windows Media Player 9 for
Mac OS X.

.ASF video file conversion trouble

2003-12-25 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Hello, all! I am new to this list. I have been on the powermacs pci list
when I first got my beige G3 but just recently I purchased a new G4 (not G3)
iBook so I have joined this list, also. I came across a mustek dv4000 MPEG4
video camera, but when I started taking movies I realized that the files
were in .ASF format and were unreadable by QuickTime and (gasp) Windows
Media Player (the camera appears to compress video using an "unknown"
codec). I am new to the DV world and now I am stuck in the mud. Where can
I find a conversion application to convert .ASF files in Mac OS, or how can
I view them on my Mac? There's plenty converters for Windows, I have found
out, but I do not own a Windows or Virtual PC. Any and all help is
appreciated!

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!
