Re: another wireless question
Problem is, if you put an airport card in your pismo, you'll be getting a B series card. G series Apple base stations are way pricey ($150 or so), and the B airports are around 1/2 that at worst... My $.02---get a B unit, then in a couple years go and get a G.. only spend the money when you actually NEED it.. On Tue, 15 Jun 2004, Tom Wolfe wrote: I'm sorry if this has been discussed ad infitinum, but I have a wireless question... My wired router just died, and since I've got to replace it, I figure it's a good time to go wireless. Just a couple of quick questions, if you please. 1) Can I/should go 802.11 G or B with a Pismo and Panther? 802.11g. B will phase out over time and you'll not be able to use G ability in any new products you acquire. The Pismo is limited to B IIRC. 2) What inexpensive router do you recommend? There are deals to be had all over the place. I paid $150Cdn for my Belkin a while back, but they've dropped to about half in some areas since then. If G isn't an issue I've seen some B routers almost being given away in package deals. 3) Would you get a PCMCIA card for the Pismo or an airport card? I don't currently use the PCMCIA slot for anything. I forget - are there 2 slots on the Pismo? If so, the PCMIA route is usually cheaper (and can be found as pasrt of the package deal I mentioned above). I have a TiBk - 1 slot - so I just went with the airport card. Good thing as I've since bought a digital camera and use the slot with adapter to transfer images. Plan for the future :-) 4) If I understand correctly I can't use airport extreme, just the original airport card in the Pismo, correct? Does that mean an 802.11 b router? Thanks for your time. I believe you're correct. The b issue I addressed above. G is backwards compatible with B. Consider the future :-) All I want to do is light surfing and email - not heavy file transfers. Ahh.. should've have read this first. B is fine, then - faster than braodband internet speeds IIRC. The main benefit to you would be allowable distance from the router. FYI - I have a G router with B airport cards in a TiBk and G4 and a newly acquired HP 5850 802.11 out-of-the box (!) printer. I really enjoy it, though file transfers take time. Re: Wall Street, Wi-fi, and OS 9.1?
Actually, This isn't entirely correct.. The original airport card has a slightly different connector witha different 'lockout' pin, which prevents its use in a pcmcia slot. Furthermore it's got a certain 'resistor' (required by Apple of the OEM), placed across 2 pins which could cuase premature power supply failure in any PCMCIA slot that its installed into. It was designed that way to be uniquly apple. That said, a standard PCMCIA card--such as RoamAbout (made by Cabletron), or a Cabletron, or a Lucent Silver, Orinoco, or Gold---all these will work perfectly on a Wallstreet and should work just fine with the Apple s/w.. I recently got a RoamAbout (think it was low $20's), and it's just as happy as can be in my Lombard's PCMCIA slot. Tom. In a message dated 6/13/04 9:30:53 PM, you wrote: Actually, the first generation AirPort card uses a standard PCMCIA connector, so you could connect one in a Wallstreet. Re: Wegener Media WS processor upgrades
I had picked up an Allegro 500mhz from Wegener last year. It runs perfectly-what more can I say. I bought it to replace a BlueChip which had the dreaded installation error (had to return it to PowerLogix). Got a warranty BlueChip replacement, which ALSO had the same problem-very frustrating. I swore to never again get an upgrade with software installation requirements-just way too many problems, which led to my getting the Wegener card. From what I hear, many upgrade cards requiring software installation are a big problem. I dunno, but I'll never ever get one which requires software-I nearly lost my mind with the BlueChip issue. I've since traded out to a Pismo (got it for a song and passed my Wallstreet off a family member). I'd say (purely subjective comparison) the Wallstreet with the 500 is almost as fast as my Pismo--well worth the $, IMHO. I ran it on OS9, and it really was a dream. Haven't seen much of the 400mhz upgrade, but I'd be int'd to hear how that one does as well. Just got another Wallstreet 233/0cache that I'd like to upgrade as well. For the price, it seems like a bargain. Re: Adding RAM to WS II
Side note on the 83/66mhz comparisons. I was just on the Wegener Media site looking for that info on the 1400 series LCD (mentioned in another thread). Well, it seems they've got a G3/400mhz card for the Wallstreet, and there is a benchmark chart showing a pretty decent speed difference between the 83mhz and the 66mhz bus units. http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm I didn't see a total comparison on the units BEFORE upgrade, (they do show the 233mhz 0 cache unit, compared to the 300mhz WITH cache), but it appears that the upgrade with the 83mhz bus is a bit faster than the 66.. I'm guessing this is due to the bus difference as well as the slight speed bump (417 over 400mhz).. The charts stuff are here: http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllstspeed.htm I'd be interested in this although I just gave my Wallstreet to my nephew, and replaced it with a Pismo. The only thing I didn't like about my Wallstreet was it seemed a bit too slow in handling photo's, and I couldn't justify putting $350-400 in an upgrade... Otherwise I'd be happy to grow old with that laptop-it is built like a tank. Tom In a message dated 5/15/04 11:01:22 PM, you wrote: Me too. I've got a WS w/ the 83 bus. Interesting related follow up on : Libel, Blah de blah, HypoCRASSy, etc.
After the hubbub and ranting about how poor Apple's history and record on machines this week, I received this afternoon an interesting article from a major Apple dealer. I found it refreshing to say the least, and it definitely confirms my own experience as welll as my opinion about Apple quality in general. This isn't intended to start another rant about libel or hypocrisy or the size of one's mouse pad; it's just a 3rd party commentary which apparently shows how Apple really IS on the top of the heap, in terms of managing and upkeeping systems. It doesn't show that they've built every computer perfectly, that there aren't glitches, etc, but it shows an ethos of sincerely trying to resolve issues immediately for the sake of the customer. This should HOPEFULLY garner some respect from our more particular crowd.. In all areas, Apple did very well. Here are some highlights from the report. Repair History Apple scored #1 for both desktop and laptops in terms of repairs needed to make them operable. The data is compiled and it shows that Apple has twice as good a score as Gateway and a reasonable lead over the number two position, Dell, for desktops. In the laptop category Apple has a slight lead over second place Toshiba, with Dell far down the list. Technical Support Apple has made improvements in technical support that I am sure many of you have experienced. The addition of the Apple retail stores to the already effective Apple Specialists and the direct telephone support has made Apple the clear leader in this category, scoring 79 on desktops (compared with Dell at 62 and HP at 55) and an impressive 82 on laptops (compared with Dell at 60 and Compaq at 49). blah blah blah.. you're horribly outof date, my 'friend'. It doth strike me thatthe 'passion' of illovox is more akin to the rantings of one who hasn't completed the thought process of the issue. as to the iBook issue: Apple has since extended this repair by 13months FURTHER.. Go to Apple's site and get the data, then when you're going to be 'the expert' you'll actually have *some* credibility. Unfortunately, you don't often bother to have ALL the facts when you spout stuff on this list, leaving the newbie with only 1/2 the information he/she really should have. As to my issue with the 5300.. I did NOT rip them off--I spoke of the physical damage to my 5300 ON THE PHONE with the rep when I called in about it. As I said, they graciously extended the REA program to me ANYWAY. I resent your assumptive accusations (once again not thinking thru what was written).. I have had problems with one of my iBooks as well, and it was taken under the recent program, even though it was 'out of code' by a few weeks (too early). Yes, Apple isn't perfect, but no they're not the devil either. It just incenses me to read cr*p that folks like you spout off, making libelous assumptive statements about folks who ARE trying to create something that YOU are the beneficiary from. Re: Apology and Clarification
Geee.. Who the heck died and left illovox king of all things electronic? Seems to me that his attitude (and demeanor) are regularly more acidic and divisive than anything that Wayne said. Yes wayne's comments seemed A LITTLE BIT abrasive, but not overly demeaning, considering that enough people have been dissatisfied with the iBook to lodge MULTIPLE lawsuits against Apple. Seems to me that a few of his points were even correct. However, to back him up, this was a SPECIFIC series of the units which had problems, and it is/was limited to a certain issue, which is being handled. The broad tarring strokes of folks like [EMAIL PROTECTED] would paint such a dark picture that it could actually be construed as libel or slander, if the right lawyer decided he was in need of a new project case. What I don't understand is someone deciding that he is the final authority on the subject. I would never consider myself pompous enough to throw my thoughts around as lightly as some have here, and I've owned a couple iBooks, yea, even 4 or 5 Powerbooks. Some were GREAT, some weren't. My powerbook 5300 cost me $1150 when it was new, and I broke it the day I got it. My fault, not Apple's.. I DID send it in for the infamous REA program some months later, and they were very gracious to cover it, despite my own abuse of the laptop. So, Wayne, don't lose any sleep-you're being attacked just because you stuck your head above the waterline. There's always a neanderthal in the crowd who will take potshots at anything that moves. Re: 802.11g base units besides AirPort?
Lynksys will work, as well as any others. THe biggest problem i've seen is that most of the non-Apple units fail horribly at 1. allowing Appletalk (ie for printing, filesharing, etc), and 2. Apple interfaces.. I did have an SMC unit (dunno who'se chips it runs on) that actually had a set IP# for configuartion, so you could just http: right into it to configure. but it still refused AppleTalk, which meant that I had to manually connect to a printer in order to print. Considering that the cost difference is only about $80, it wasn't worth the hassle of going to a printer to connect, resetting my appletalk , rebooting, and hopefully getting a connection.. And then, I still couldn't do Appletalk filesharing to another Mac on the network because Linksys (as well as most of the others that I looked at) refused to offer routing of Appletalk over the ethernet-wireless bridge. All this hassle just to save $80 on a product I would use EVERY DAY? I don't think so.. I sold the units, then went bought a $149 brand new Airport base station, which works perfectly with everything I have, fully integrated, fully controllable, and hey, it even looks cool. But hey, to each his own : ) In a message dated 3/29/04 11:37:40 AM, you wrote: Interesting. I have used Linksys in the past. Have had not great luck with the products but good luck with the support. Re: iBooks vs. the World
This is a nice perspective, though a bit flawed.. A G4/1mb cache will WAY WAY WAY outperform a G3/900/256k or 512kcache unit for issues like video editing, photo resizing, rendering, etc. basically any time a large amount of math work is done, the processor needs a lot of space for temporarily filing math problems, while it processes other math. Without a large cache size (1mb), you're going to lose speed, because the processor will write that data to a hard disk (ie., very slow), as it works For instance, a Pismo with the G3/500 upgrade card in it (500mhz, 1mb cache) will way outperform an iBook G3 900/512kb in video editing and rendering. It's all due to the cache-save function. The issue is compound. you have to knnow WHAT you're doing with the unit. If it's just light activity (email, word processing, etc), go for speed. The faster processor speed (mhz) will help you. But if you actually do REAL computer intensive work (audio file editing, video file editing, rendering, photo editing), the same iteration chip (ie., G3/500/1mb) with more cache will outperform it's mate wiht less cache (i.e G3/900/512k). I recently did an A/B test of daystar's G4/500/1mbcache upgrade for the Pismo, vs the PowerLogix G3/900/256k cache for the same. The results were staggering. I had upgraded the Pismo to jaguar. the G3/900 just crawled along. yes, it was a TINY TINY bit faster than my original G3/500/1mb, but it wasn't worth the $350 cost. When I put the G4/500/1mb cache card in, it was truly as if I'd purchased a new computer. screen redraws, video re-write, application switching--it was really sweet smooth... so, my thought--figure out what you're doing first.. OSX is happier with 1. more cache and 2. a G4 processor. OS9 doesn't care QUITE as much. If you're doing day-to-day average work, the faster chip with less cache will be better. If you're doing processor intensive stuff, the higher cache unit will be your friend Tom In a message dated 3/27/04 2:34:54 PM, you wrote: I feel that all this talk of the iBooks and G3 units as useful only for light this and that is nonsense. Only a few short years ago, G3 chips were the top of the Mac food chain. At that time G2s were only for light so and so. Fact is, G3s handle heavy work just fine. In some cases, the jobs take a little longer...that's all. In some cases, a G3 will perform even faster. A 900mhz G3 will perform all functions more swiftly than a 500mhz G4, all other elements being equal. So, the real issues in choosing between an iBook and a Powerbook are extended desktop use, professional connectivity and presentation issues, required time to get jobs done, appearance and one other caveat: The iBooks have been suffering from a hinge problem wherein the hinge eventually cuts through the cable bundle that wires the screen to the mainboard. Once cut through, expecially the power cable, it shorts the entire system. That is what has been causing all the MoBo failures in the iBook line. Apple won't admit it, despite their limited recall, and all the discussion sites and boards are speculating about bad mainboards and so on, but it's scissored cable junctions, hands down. As to if the new iBooks have finally addressed this time will tell. But it is an expensive mitigating factor and one I don't want to have to go through again. on 3/26/04 9:52 AM, Nick Marshall [EMAIL PROTECTED]: -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... My thoughts on this were that the Apple unit was more compatible and more reliable... You asked about where.. I got my new one from www.wegenermedia.com; they had a clearance on the early dual ethernet units. I just went checked there: they're out of the early units (like I got), but they've got the Extreme stations in right now at $159.99 -- http://www.wegenermedia.com/Airportxtreme.htm. Re: UCE from list
Exactly.. I was shocked the first time I saw my email address come up on Google, from this list. Especially after all the ranting about the rules and restrictions. Pretty inconsistent. Perhaps the Powers that Be should consider just pulling the archive. Here's a thought. Pull the archives from the web, then put a single hot button on the home page that one can use to search the archives. have the LEM server store the archives but not in html--have it database them, so you have to do a manual search on the LEM server.. That would eliminate spamming/netting of all our addresses, and we could still then get plenty of access to the archives (as could any member or potential member). TOm. Re: iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program
I disagree. Nobody is out but the owners, stockholders, and investors and future users and recipients of Apple product. Due to the assenine class-action suit against Apple, this has had lots of press. I have it from a good source that they've been working on this program for nearly 14 months, but it took a while to get the system hammered out, even though tons of folks were having the problem. They knew it was an issue LONG before some sleazoid lawyers decided to make a quick buck... The real winners are the jack-a$$ lawyers who sued--they'll come out with the cash. The plaintiffs are going to be lucky if they walk away with their machines repaired, and in the end, the only advantage to you and me is that the news hit the stands a little louder because of the suit. Apple was working on it and would have released it (the program) anyway, because they DO care abouttheir clients, despite what some here think. The issue is HIGHLY technical, not easy to resolve, and requires a very very complex process, so development of a cure has taken quite some time to implement. That said, the other real winner is ATI. The whole problem is due to a poorly designed and faulty ATI Rage Pro chip, not by evil Republicans in the dark folds of Apple... Unless something happened behind closed doors, those ATI guys are the ones who made out like bandits--cause they never had to pay for the problem they caused Apple by selling a problematic chip, which overheats and blows up every 18 months. Tom. In a message dated 1/30/04 12:27:26 AM, you wrote: Well, they do have to narrow it down to a particular cause and figure out a solution for it before they release a plan to fix it, otherwise they are just blowing sunshine up our butts ... and wasting our time and their money in short term fixes. Re: Stupid RAM
It's the wrong type RAM. The Lombard requires PC66, although SOME lucky bastards find that their machines do accept PC100.. It's the luck of the draw I guess--mine won't take PC100, even though an old Wallstreet I had (which supposedly required PC66) was as happy as a clam with PC100!!! Anyway, the technical side of it is that the PC100 is stacked ram, and the PC66-version laptops (Lombard Wallstreet) shouldn't bee able to see more than half of any 'stacked configuration.. BTW, I've heard that if you DO get it to work, you'll likely experience more frequent crashing. good luck! Even the LCD is different and won't exchange. : ( Tom -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OSX on a Wallstreet?? My modem won't work! What'sup withthat??
Ok, just upgraded my little G3 Wallstreet to OSX (Jaguar).. Got that Allegro 500 card for it, and it pretty much flies, so I figured what the heck, I'd try X on it... Hey, minor fit of insanity, but it sure works great.. The only issue is that as soon as I upgraded, my dialup went out the window.. Not the software, but I can't get it to dial the modem at all. It gives an error message every time I try to dial up. Anyone else experienced this? Ive spent a good bit of time researching it but to no avail, and I can't seem to get it to ever even dial. Thanks for any advice you might have! Tom -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo DVD drive not recognising CD's
I had this exact same problem and figuring that the mechanism was blown, bought a new mechanism for it from Wegener Media. They mentioned this happens a lot with the DRN8080B mechanism, and they've found a new revision of the drive which is less problematic. As it's working perfectly now with the new mechanism, I'm pretty certain that the diagnosis was correct. Apparently it's something that LG has addressed, but obviously not soon enough for those of us who were blessed with LG mechanisms. I think the total damage was around $100 for a new mechanism, and it only took about 3 minutes to install. Probably the easiest (and least expensive!) fix I've done for my Pismo to date. Hope it helps. Tom On 14/7/03 11:36 PM, Pete Gregory [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Any bright ideas as what the problem is and how to fix it? My 3 year old pismo (OS 9.22, 382 Mb Ram, stock 20Mb HD) has stopped recognising CD's. I put a CD or CD-R in the drive, close the unit, the drive spins up, spins down about a second later and that's it. Checking in sys profiler shows 'no media' and the eject button on the unit still works. I've tried with a few CD's, pulled the drive out and reseated it but no joy. However, it happily reads DVDs with no problems. Model is LG (DVD-ROM DRN8080B rev LAB8) with driver version 1.4.7. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Buying new Powerbook (now the wrong Powerbook)
This group is beyond belief; arguing that the Apple is upside down on one machine and the right way on another. That's like deciding that last year's minivan model with only three doors was wrong, then it was fixed when this year's included a four door version. NEITHER IS WRONG--THEY'RE ONLY DIFFERENT! Apple, like any other mfr, should be allowed to improve on each year's production. At least that's what we HOPE is happenning! Oh well.. I guess we don't have enough to whine about, so let's all jump on the bandwagon and decide that Steve Jobs is the antichrist. Thats the problem with Mac users. They use their Macs so well that they have the time to nitpick about the most inconsequential things. My only beef with Jobs is that he's not created a 007 wristwatch with a built-in iPod AND cell phone. enough OT junk. I'm going back to my coffee.
