Re: Pismo memory questions

I've been running my Pismo with 1 GB of memory for 10 months now, and with 640 MB of memory for probably about a year before that with, no problems in either configuration. Any recommendations on specific memory brands / manufacturers (Crucial, Omni Technologies, Kingston, Samsung, ...) or online retailers that I should specifically seek out or avoid ? I got the second 512MB chip last winter from PowerBook Medics, who have always been good to me, plus they ship overseas. I had previously bought RAM on several occasions via sites listed through Ramseeker.com--I do remember that there was an outfit in the L.A. area that I bought from twice, once probably for the first 512MB chip and once for RAM for a desktop I've long since sold (probably my PowerMac 730). Pretty sure it was MemoryToGo.com, since I still have that home page bookmarked--can't find any old e-mail about it, though, and all of my old hardware receipts are sitting in a storage shed 5,000 miles across the ocean so I can't really double check right now. I believe PowerBook Medics sells only Kingston RAM--been a few months since I've been inside the Pismo, but I'm pretty sure what I have in there is one Samsung and one from whichever Korean or Japanese manufacturer whose RAM Kingston actually handles. Re: what's a good lap top cooler
I'd like an actual answer to the question originally asked rather than advice about other types of laptop coolers. Is there anybody on this list who IS actually using a Targus ChillHub? What is your experience with it? Does it work well with your PowerBook or iBook? Of particular interest to me is, how noisy are the fans? I use a Pismo with a G4 upgrade, which I love everything about except for the fact that the CPU tends to run a little hot and kicks in the internal fan. I already use a Targus CoolPad, which helps, but I'm curious about the ChillHub SPECIFICALLY as an alternative. Me, I could care less about it drawing power from the laptop--the current model of the ChillHub comes with an AC adapter of its own and I rarely run off my PowerBook battery anyway, except to occasionally condition the battery. Still, for those people interested in using this PARTICULAR accessory, reports of your experience with battery efficiency would no doubt be welcome. There's a tab on both the right and left side of the entire display/upper housing assembly that slides into the hinge/bracket on the PB inverter board. I would suspect a burr on the hole edge, and some working of it would set things free. There isn't a screw or anything that holds things together in that area. Yep, it's pretty clear that there's no screw involved here; you can see that this is the case once you've dissassembled the computer sufficiently. What I was wondering was if there was some kind of groove, say, into which the tab on the left side had to slide in and out of (the tab on the right side slides in and out with absolutely no problem) and that required some special trick when it came to display removal like having to pull the display up to the left while pushing forward, chant I hate Bill Gates three times, and throw salt over your shoulder :-) Sounds like a burr along the edge of the hinge/bracket or the tab is what's giving me grief; just have to see what I can do, I guess. Pismo display removal issue
Hi all: I need to replace the AC/power board on my Pismo, a very hairy operation in which one basically has to remove every single thing that can be removed from the computer in order to get at the old board and put in the new one. In the process of attempting this delicate operation, I discovered that my display is not easily removable. The display has two tabs that slide into a sort of bracket-hinge thingie (anyone who's performed a display removal operation knows what I'm talking about, I hope). While the tab on the right side slides in and out of the corresponding bracket-hinge quite easily, the one on the left side does not. It seems to catch on the lip of the bracket-hinge. I've tried sliding it back and forth, and pressing the tab to one or the other of the bracket when pulling up, but nothing works. Does anybody have any advice about how to get it out? Is there some sort of trick that's not in the Pismo Take-Apart Manual? (FYI: PowerBook Medic makes this manual, of which I have a copy.) Or am I stuck with trying to jam a screwdriver into the bracket with one hand and pulling up the display with the other? TIA. Re: Replacement pismo battery
Hi Tim: At 10:22 AM + 1/13/05, Tim Hodgson wrote: My Pismo's battery life is now zero, so I'm in the market. Although I'm in the UK, the most promising deals I've found so far are the high- capacity (6600mAh and 7200mAh) NewerTech batteries sold by OWC in the US. Even after shipping and tax these work out slighly cheaper than a standard 5400mAh battery bought here. (Don't ask me why :) Any comments, or alternative suggestions? I don't see any responses from anyone else so here's my two bits (about 0.13 pounds :-). I got a 5400mAh battery from PowerBook Medic last summer that has worked out just fine. I don't do a lot of battery-based work as the Pismo is essentially my desktop machine, but the times that I do unplug and go battery it seems to hold a decent charge of 3.5 to 4 hours. OWC beats PBM on pricing hands down--the reasons I went through PBM for that order are a bit long and involved and not particularly worth going into. I shop with OWC for parts, too. FWIW. AirPort Extreme/dual-boot Pismo question
Hey all: I'm planning to get a wireless broadband router of some sort in the near future and have been looking into various options. I had pretty much ruled out the AirPort Extreme base station due to compatibility concerns--I still work primarily in OS 9 on my Pismo and would not be able to administer the base station with OS 9's AirPort 2.0.4 software. However, it just occurred to me that I do also run OS X and keep it up to date, which means the AirPort software in my OS X partition is compatible. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's all I need to administer the AirPort Extreme base station, right? Doesn't matter that my Pismo has only an AirPort card, and not the AirPort Extreme, right? My related concern was that, even though I could administer the saucer only when booted into OS X, once I have it set up it won't matter if I reboot into OS 9--I would still be able to use the base station as my wireless hub. Once the settings are in place, it doesn't matter if I'm in OS 9 or OS X on the computer that set up the base station; it only matters when I need to perform some administrative tasks, right? All I do is set up the base station to allow connections to people offering the right password and it runs on autopilot (more or less) after that, right? The answers to all these questions seem pretty obvious to me, which is why I think I really ought to double check anyway :-) So, here I am, double checking. I have an 802.11g adapter for my other computer (a ThinkPad) and at some point in the future will probably add an OS X-only iBook or TiBook to my collection, so the Extreme base station (or a 3rd party 802.11g router) seems like the best way to go for the longer term. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Carl -- ** Carl Freire cfreire @ ix.netcom.com cfreire @ uclink4.berkeley.edu -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I'd also be interested in hearing success stories from folks who've upgraded their pismos with the Daystar G4. Mine's been quite successful, though there were some bumps in the installation process as we discovered various circuits on both the logic board and daughter card had gone bad in various ways. Daystar eventually gave me a free logic board, though I paid for a new daughter card--all in all, I think they did what was reasonable and were always cordial in their communications. I spoke to both Gary Daley and one of the techs over the phone a couple of times during the process, too. I've been quite satisfied with the results. I got the 550MHz version. I ran Norton System Info and it reported my Pismo on the whole was about 20% faster than the previous benchmark, which falls in line with their basic predictions. OSX has been noticeably speedier, aided all the more by the upgrade I finally made to 10.3. OS 9 boots faster and seems a little springier somehow with opening apps. FWIW, I recently maxed out the RAM (1024MB) and even with a slower hard drive (filling in with the old OEM 10GB 4200rpm drive while awaiting a replacement for the 40GB 5400rpm drive used in the above benchmarking that had been behaving oddly of late) the Pismo benchmark is now about 40% faster than the pre-G4 benchmark I recorded. Looking forward to seeing what it's like when I get the 5400 back in. I've been happy all in all. Glad to keep this baby running well under both OSes. FWIW.
