Kensington and iGo make several adapters and plug ends for your PB.
Also check out the accessories which connect PDAs, cell phones, iPods,
etc.

Does
anyone make an adapter for the G4 aluminum right now? The SmartDisk is
supposed to be available at the end of the month, but there's no
mention of
it that I can find on their Web site.

Re: Power Supply

Look at the one Kensington and iGo make. If the adapter tip is not
included for your iBook it can be ordered. Also Radio Shack carries an
array of these tips. These will also charge iPods, PDAs, cell phones,
etc.

Is there a different power supply I can use with my iBook? The "flying

Is there a more conventional "brick" style I can use with Irving?

Re: Wireless recomendations?

2005-04-29 Thread Deaner Lawless
Hi Van,
Thanks again. The Belkin 7010 card box had nothing of the sort. However
the web site made the same claim re being compatible with 1026 and
103X. Wonder Why the Asanté doen't work with an APEBS??? BTW the Belkin
7010, Ver. 3001 does work well in my Wallstreet (1028) and Pismo (1036)
using the driver from Ralink who made the chipset. It is superior to
the original Airport card in the Pismo!!! Still wished it worked with
apple's driver.

No, I'm talking about a year ago, when they changed from the Broadcom
chipset (OS 9 & X compatible, airport drivers) to the Ralink chipset
(OS X Ralink drivers only), but didn't have that info available on the
web for a while.

I remember a post where someone on this list got one and it wouldn't
work with the airport drivers, but (if I remember correctly) the web
site or tech support insisted it should. By the time I got mine, I
don't know if Belkin had updated their site (though I did get mine
expecting it would work with the Airport drivers, based on old posts
on this list; I hadn't read the one I mention above yet), but people
on this list were able to point me to the correct drivers.

Hey, wait, their web site says now "Mac OS® X v10.2.6 with AirPort®
installer 3.0.4, or Mac OS® X v10.3" - but I thought that Airport
requirement was for Broadcom - am I confused, or are they still
putting out old information, or have they changed chipsets again?

Their PDF manual is entirely Windows-oriented, so that's useless.
They do have remarkable bad online support!!!

The USB adapter VER. B1 uses Ralink. All I have been able to find is

Concur in your statement on chip set. That is why I am interested in

I've just checked the Ralink site and they have drivers for their
chipset, including a "usb" version... this seems to indicate that some
usb wifi adapters may work with this driver if they use the Ralink
chipset. The problem is that usually the vendors do not provide
information about the chipset they use (likely because they do change
them or want at least to reserve that option).

Ralink web site ralinktech.com (these seem to be the ones in a grayish
box, but I am not sure), again for Mac OS X.

As far as Mac OS 9 is concerned, I do not know.
My Belkin card works great in a Wallstreet running 10.3.8 (installed
with XPostFacto).

Re: belkin card

2005-04-14 Thread Deaner Lawless
g,
Tks. I am on the way to CompUSA to get one. Interesting fact about the
Comp site and the Belkin site is I couldn't drill down with usual
keywords to find it. I had to enter the model number and there it was.
Even says 10.2.6 and 10.3 compatible. I've watched the guys at Comp use
the same site. No wonder they couldn't help. So I guess it would be
prudent to read each and every spec for all the models you are
interested. That is a speedy way to shop Really appreciate your
help. Will report back.

Re: Looking for an Airport card

2005-04-13 Thread Deaner Lawless
Chris,
Like you the Belkin F5D7001 VER. 1000 PCI worked great in my PMG4.
However I haven't been able to get the Belkin F5D7011 VER.1101 NoteBook
Network Card to work in either a PBG4al, Pismo or a Wallstreet on OSX.
Concur in your statement on chip set. That is why I am interested in
what g experienced. Must have been a Broadcom Chip Set. Hopefully the
VER. will reveal. I am also experimenting with USB WiFI adapters. So
far same outcome.

The Belkin G card with the Broadcom chipset is reported to be
recognized as an Airport card (ie. using just the Airport software) in
OS X. Be careful to check that the card still uses the Broadcom
chipset, as it's been reported that at some point in recent past
Belkin switched chipsets and no longer uses the Broadcom one.
FWIW, I have a Belkin G PCI slot modem in my G4 powermac and it has
the Broadcom chipset and is recognized as an internal Airport card.

Good luck.

TigerDirect has the Asante AL5403-XG 802.11G Cardbus 54MBPS adapter

If you order via TigerDirect through Amazon, it will save you a buck

Yes, I agree, the internal Airport card is preferred, but tough to

Also, check www.expercom.com for original airport cards - both new and

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-12 Thread Deaner Lawless
Curious . . was the 512 module recommended by the manufacturer for
both machines?

module
restored stability.

I'm puzzled as the 512 module is a 512mb PC133 SO-DIMM CAS3 pulled
from a
iBook G3 (in which it works very well) and this is exactly the kind of
RAM
used by the PB G4 1GHz. It has also exactly the same labels on it as
the
original 256 sticks, it looks the same, same brand, except for being
sligthly shorter in height. I'm not sure if this is to be considered
3rd
party RAM? It has also worked with no problems since I installed it,
just
until all hell broke loose with the latest software updates.

So the message here is for those attempting to up their RAM without
being
robbed by Apple: be very careful. I'm not sure whether it's the OS or
the
machine hardware responsible for this pickyness about RAM, either way
it's
highly irritanting (to me at least).

cheers and thanks again for the help,
gianfranco
I had a similar experience on an older PB about a month ago. Stability
was good before I increased the RAM. Very poor stability with the new
RAM. Stability returned with the original chips. As it turned out the
backward compatibility as shown on the packaging was wrong.

It is also possible that the iLife installation CD is corrupted or
has
been
damaged. Did you had any 3rd party memory in that PowerBook? Is this
the
original hard disk? What Titanium model is this? When rebooting from
the
system install disk, did you make sure that no peripheral were
connected?
Specially USB peripherals, like mouse and/or keyboard?

Re: Photoshop freeze on save

2005-04-12 Thread Deaner Lawless
Just launch FontBook and disable your user account fonts. If the
problem goes away them it is one of the fonts you disabled. Then go
back and half the list. Repeat until you narrow it down to the
conflicting font. Apply this process to the "Computer" fonts if needed.
Be careful of the fonts needed by the Apple apps i.e. Mail,
AddressBook, Safari, etc.

Go to versiontracker.com and look for a font utility. See if you can
find
one that will let you check for corrupt fonts during the trial period.
Try
deleting/deactivating the corrupt fonts.

I vaguely remember there being a problem with a times font that was

I think that your disk is having some problems. Have you tried, after
booting from a system install disk to launch Disk Utility and format
the
drive, making sure that you turn on the option to write zeros? Before
replacing the disk, you might want to try a disk repair utility like
Disk
Warrior, but that will add to the cost of getting another drive. I
would
guess that the drive has some problems, but this is mostly
speculation. It
is hard from the symptoms you describe to tell what is wrong...

It is also possible that the iLife installation CD is corrupted or has
been
damaged. Did you had any 3rd party memory in that PowerBook? Is this
the
original hard disk? What Titanium model is this? When rebooting from
the
system install disk, did you make sure that no peripheral were
connected?
Specially USB peripherals, like mouse and/or keyboard?

I don't think it is a problem installing from a DVD made for another
PowerBook but you might want to try a generic OS X install disk, if
you can,
just to be sure.
