Yes, they are. I had a 400MHz processor and I replaced it with a 500MHz

Mac System 9.2 not seeing Nikon coolpix 5700 cf card

2004-04-23 Thread Dwight Hines
I've tried re-installing Nikon View 6.1 but for some reason, the CF card is
not being seen and the program keeps asking me if I want to format it.
Formatting it only results in the camera erasing all the images and then
needing to be reformatted by the camera.

I don't have any images that need to be kept so nothing has been lost and I
plan to get it working before I take any more photos.

Any suggestions?

Re: Pismo rubber feet

2003-11-15 Thread Dwight Hines
Yes, hie thee down to your local WalMart or Dollar General and tell them you
want the little round stickum pads they put under furniture. They are
called Grippers and they are made by FloorKing. They will have them in
black or white and in packages of 6 or 8 or 12. The sizes will vary from a
diameter larger than a dime to about the diameter of a silver dollar. I am
using two 1/2 inch pads at each corner of my Pismo. The height keeps my
Pismo nice and cool and for the past few years has avoided all irritation
and discomfort in my wrists and hands. I think there is some ergonomic
value in having the Pismo at the right height for you, so for $2.95 a
package, you can experiment. The pads last about 2 years for me, so you
might want to let your local Mac group know you have them.

d

 Hi.
Please share with me what is the racket going on with
replacing the powerbook rubber feet for a Pismo? I've visited at
least three websites where they are trying to sell replacement
stick-on rubber feet for close to $20. The lowest price at one site
wanted $10 for the strip of four black stick-on rubber feet but then
their shipping and handling was $10. This is insane since the weight
isn't even listed because it does not register on most postal scales.
Yup, you guessed it a first class no. 10 envelope for thirty seven
 cents and away they go.
So as a temporary measure I went to Home Depot and purchased
clear stick-on cabinet door bumpers 3/8 package of twenty for $2.
The thickness is greater but I'm testing the first one to see if it
 stays on.
Does anyone else have a suggestion for a reasonably priced
 source of black powerbook feet?
 Thanks
 Brent Baeslack [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Needed: simple utility that will scan a folder of jpgs and create a list of exif text for each jpg

2003-10-28 Thread Dwight Hines

I've searched the web and can not find a freebie for what I would like. So,
if I have a folder with 34 jpgs in it, i would like to have each jpg
grabbed, then the exif file sent to a separate printable file and then the
next one and so on.

I would think that someone would have written a script that would do that.

Eh?

Re: Free wireless at hooters? [was Re: Any one heard ofCfgOpenTpt?

2003-07-03 Thread Dwight Hines
Settle down fellows. My, my, how your minds run wild. Here's the
situation, and by the way, I did what was suggested and am now at the stage
where Airport loads and shows a good connection but I can't get access (this
is from the library).

The reason I went to Hooters was totally benign. Gainesville has the
digital downtown and it covers the courthouse and restaurants. Last week, I
went to Harry's, after not being able to connect at the Mellow Mushroom
Restaurant who have their own wireless system. Well, Harry's was getting
500k speeds and I only got that at MM when they were negotiating with the
cable people.

Now, stay with me here. When I go to Harry's, I have to eat their
Jambalaya, made with rice. It is wonderful. It is the closest I've found
to jambalaya that I ate as a teenager that was prepared by a real cajun
swamp woman.

But, jambalaya every week, especially when they serve it with the hot bread
and spicy butter, is not part of my diet.

So, I thought, off to Hooters, get a beer, watch the women while
downloading, and was I ever disappointed. I watched the food. Nothing
against the beautiful women, young women, but there is a sameness to them
that is easy to habituate to. So, the food it was and the Cfg error.

Besides, it would hard to explain to my church people what I was doing
there. However, since there were a couple of the deputies there from the
courthouse, in full uniform, talking to who appeared to be their atttorney
or union rep, I think it was ok.

Peace,
d

Just a note on a Mac G4 being chosen by specialists and paid forby Sweethearts

2002-11-20 Thread Dwight Hines

In the current issue of ATBI Quarterly*, a photo of the new G4 Mac and
monitor, with scanner and monitor is shown. It's good to know that when
DLIA (Discover Life in America) photographer Rebecca Schiflett did the
research on what machine is best, she chose Mac. The system will allow
them to scan in slides and prints and negatives and fresh specimens. And
the National Park Service paid for it totally.

d

*ATBI = All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. ATBI and DLIA are working hard in
the Smokey Mountains to catalogue ALL life that is there. It is an awesome
project that is being conducted by scientists and private volunteers. Their
webpage, www.discoverlifeinamerica.org is under construction but they have
already found 292 new species, with new to the Park being 2,163.

If this much gets you excited, or you just like environmental stuff, or want
to volunteer for a day or week or summer of collecting samples in the Park,
or just want to send money to Jeanie, you can get more lurid details at the
temporary webpages, http://atbi.biosci.ohio-state.edu/dlia/index.html

There are a number of projects that are scheduled for the coming year,
including a Beetle Blast, which can't be as interesting as the Myxoblast
that I missed because I had to be in court, and you can find out more about
all of this at the webpage.

N.B. Disclaimer: I do not own and am not related to anyone who does own or
make money, etc, from ATBI/DLIA. I just think it is one wonderful idea that
is being put into some wonderful practices. So, grab your G3s and G4s and
mosey on over to the Smokies and see what you can do to help. Ask for
Jeanie.

Where did you get the BTI adapter for your Pismo, cost and doesanyone have an Apple tattoo?

2002-09-07 Thread Dwight Hines

I am in the same budget range as you are, about $25, including shipping.
This now should be possible since the PB1400, PB3400, the G3 series, the DUO
200 and Duo 2300 powersupplies will work on a Pismo.

But where did you get your adapter?

Finally, does anyone on the list have an Apple tattoo. I'm thinking about
getting one.

d

P.S. Where does the name Pismo come from?

while I struggled to get a replacement. Initially, I was looking on
LEM-Swap and ebay for an older one, but they all seemed to be going for
over $25 on ebay, which was more than I wanted to pay for something
 used.

Hopefully its going to end today with the arrival of the FedEx truck!

power supply for PB1400 will work with Pismo?

2002-09-05 Thread Dwight Hines

hey, if this is true, then anyone who needs a backup power supply can use a
PB 1400 powersupply.
Right?
d

Yep, I agree, the power adapter is flimsy and the wire breaks and
deteriorates easily. I'm on my second power adapter so far. It's not the
adapter itself but the wire that goes to your Pismo...very fragile. Other
than that the Pismo is Grat.

Which is why I use the power supply for my wife's PB 14oo when I travel. :-)

We'll be an elite group and will have no worries of anyone bothering us when
we are working. Or not working.

Mac-Cloistering with WiFi

2002-08-17 Thread Dwight Hines

snip

Wintel, or *nix box. (With the exception of some minor specifics like VPN
clients and encryption key exchange support.) Why not just join one of
the many active Wi-Fi groups? Why does everything have to be
 Mac-cloistered?

 KeS

WE need a Mac WiFi discussion list because the questions I have, and others
using Macs, will be answered so they make sense.

Besides, it makes me feel so so special to be a Mac user.

I feel pretty, oh so pretty.
When I'm using my Mac.

dh
p.s. What other active Wi-Fi groups? Most of them use *nix machines and I
never know how to pronounce the *. And I don't know what VPN means and I
don't think I want to go for encryption key exchange support -- it sounds
too much like sharing needles.

Separate Mac WiFi

2002-08-17 Thread Dwight Hines

More to the point, why do we need a *separate* list for *everything*?
Because Mac people are charming and intelligent and nice.
And it wouldn't be for everything, just for those of us who would like the
warm toasty blanket of reassurance, and good hard core Mac Facts.

 Jeez!
 I'm a bearded right-handed guy with a 540c with a Rev B PCMCIA slot! Can
we have a separate list for that??
The way you talk!

How about left-handed users of Pismos with custom paint jobs??
If that is what people want, let them (us) have it. We don't have to fit
into one mold or two or ten thousand. We can have as many molds are there
are Mac users. When two or more are gathered around a Mac, something magic
happens.

Wall Street owners with serial numbers that end with '6'!??
If they want it, sure. We call it e-democracy. We let the folks vote with
their cursors and mice and clickers.
In fact, if there was a group of Mac people who wanted to start a group of
Mac WriteNow users who were working on legal problems of poor people in
ghettos, I'd say more power to them.

 sigh
Exhale.

Airport questions

2002-08-16 Thread Dwight Hines

I've just started using Airport on my Pismo (G3 Firewire) and it is
wonderful. Some questions that ya'll may be able to help me with are:

1) I get the message on my Airport screen that 'false encryption' is there.
What does that mean? The folks who run the system said to check with the
experts -- meaning ya'll.

2) How do you deal with the glare of the sun and bright lights when using
Airport near a window or outside? I thought of an old fashioned camera
shade that goes from the screen to the back of my head, but that may not be
appreciated.

3) Why are there so few people using the wireless connections? The access
is free and legal but I am the only one using it in the mornings in a large
mall type place in Florida.

4) Why are the free access places so poorly marketed? It's as if the geeks
are in charge of the marketing, i.e., 'we built it, so they'll come'
marketing.

5) Why have libraries been so obstinate and pigheaded, even reactionary,
about adopting wireless? They should be the leaders.

6) Are those great maps the wifi folks in Pitt are creating showing any
meaningful growth patterns? Or are they still a function of who has been
wandering around again?

Possible sublist for Airport WiFi discussions

2002-08-16 Thread Dwight Hines

Do you think there are enough Mac folks who use airport to start a list just
for that?

Earthlink is bonding with boingo, or has bonded, but as of yet they do not
allow Macs into the pool. They said they will be ready for Macs by
December.

I think we need a group of unshaven, wooly minded, barefooted Mac Activists
who are Wireless.

Just to keep the dark side a little honest.

Like it is going to be a list like this that has someone case out all the
Gateway computer stores that have inside wireless so we can figure out how
to boost their signal so the restaurants next door, or down the street, can
access their wireless. The people at the stores don't know the answers to
those questions.

How do you capture video streaming through RealTime

2002-08-14 Thread Dwight Hines

There are some videos on the Florida Supreme Court webpage that I would like
to download and save. At this time, all I can do is watch them streaming
using RealTime.

This is a pain because I have a slow phone connection and because I would
like to view them when I am not hooked to the internet.

Does anyone know the way to capture the video that comes through RealTime?
If not, does anyone know what group or list would know?

Finally, is anyone out their having problems using 2 or more firewire
harddrives on a G3 Pismo?

Thank you,
d

Firewire Hard disk magic

2002-08-13 Thread Dwight Hines

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and I finally took the Western
Digital drive out of the cage it was in and put it in a brand new cage and
all the data are there and it the drive works like a honey.

Odd, I never thought that I would have problems with my backup drive before
I had problems with my primary system.

So, feeling full of success and all fat and knowledgeable for doing all
those disconnects and connects and actually have the damned thing work, my
next project is going to be to put a nice neat 30 gig disk in my Pismo.
Does anyone have a used 30 gig that is quiet?

d, wondering what happens to all those disks that people trade up from. I
still have my 500 meg disk and not much you can do with it.

What were your Pismo temps with lid down?

2002-08-10 Thread Dwight Hines

Not true. As Remy pointed out, they are designed to operate this way. I've
had my Pismo running 24/7 in this configuration for almost 2 years. I
monitored the heat carefully for the first few months, because I was
concerned about this as well, but, if anything, it seems to run cooler with
the lid down (go figure). Never, not once, have I had a heat issue.

 -pha

What were the temps you were running? And were you running heavy duty
programs?

MacStumbler: Need some lobbying for warwalking software

2002-08-09 Thread Dwight Hines

I've been emailing korben, author of open source MacStumbler, and offering
him money and he has so far resisted me. What follows is his reply that I
apologize for cross-posting. I think the need for a good 8.x and 9.x
MacStumbler is worthy of a moon shot effort.

How do we do this?

None of the MacStumbler code is portable over to OS 9, it's all cocoa
(objective-c) and the airport API under OS 9 is probably completely
different. Since I know almost nothing about programming under OS 9 and
since I never use it myself, I'm not planning on ever making an OS 9
version of MacStumbler. There is another app you can try called AP
Scanner, you can find it at
http://homepage.mac.com/typexi/Personal1.html .

I don't mind if you put the idea of a port out there, but keep in mind
none of the code will translate over, writing a port means starting from
scratch. Also, the MacStumbler code is released under the GNU Public
License (GPL) which basically means any project based on it's code must
also publish it's code pubically, and may not charge a fee for
distributing it. So if someone writes a program based on some of
MacStumbler's code, they can't charge for it.

I may end up fooling around with stuff in OS 9 and maybe create
something halfway functional, but I don't like to give any guarantees.
That's mainly the reason I decided not to ask for any money for
MacStumbler, I'm just a student and I don't have a lot of time to
support people who feel they're entitled to updates, etc because they
payed money.

-korben
Is there some one who can do a MacStumbler for us?

Apologies for cross posting but need help on surreptitious notsubversive downloading

2002-07-31 Thread Dwight Hines

Situation: I've got a fine Pismo G3 but a terribly slow phone connection.
I need to download some large pgms and docs (Mozilla, etc,) and library only
lets us use 1.4 meg floppies.

So, has anyone been able to slip into the computer sections of their library
and plug a zip drive into one of the almost always IBM type machines and
download to the zip and then sneak out again?

I need to know what plugs have to mate and if I need an entirely new zip
drive. Of course, I would not consider this if someone would sell me a
working Orinoco Wavelan card for 25$ or less. Or an Airport card for 25$ or
less.

Any suggestions would be appreciated and forgive me for cross posting this
on different lists.

dh

P.S. I've heard the 5 gig ipods are best to use for this type of
actitivity.

cheapest WIFI card for G3Firewire Powerbook?

2002-07-23 Thread Dwight Hines

What is the cheapest airport type card I can buy for a G3 Firewire Powerbook
(Pismo) that I can just stick into the side of the Pismo and start
downloading megabytes of files at megabyte speeds from the free air net at
city hall?

Where would I get this card, especially since it may be a used one at such a
great price?

Will the needed software come with the card?

Peace,

Re: Pismo track pad

2002-07-16 Thread Dwight Hines

Any comment from other Pismo owners?

I've been using this Pismo for over two years. No problem with track pad at
all. Much better than pad on 540 or 190cs. The 190 broke and I had to go
to using a mouse.

I love my Pismo and wish that some one would specify how I could fit another
hard drive inside it. I have the original 6 gig and the CD/DVD which are
rarely used.

Just an FYI if anyone cares. :-)

I ordered the 40GB 4200rpm 9.5mm IBM hard drive for my powerbook
 firewire/pismo from newegg.com. Total was $144 shipped.

I care. How are you going to dump your present disk onto it? Are you going
to put your present internal drive into a case and use it as a secondary
device?
I assume you have a pismo.

Re: Pismo battery loose in battery bay--normal and PRAM battery?

2002-06-15 Thread Dwight Hines

My battery is snug in my Pismo. That's all I can tell you. There
probably is a problem. Does it charge?

Anyway my battery doesn't hold much of a charge after almost two years,
so it probably isn't too much of a loss.

 Jim

Mine is loose from front to back, but it snug vertically.

Also, where is cheapest and quickest place to get the PRAM battery for a
Pismo?

My regular battery, albeit loose, holds a charge well and has done so for 2
years. I do use battery amnesia every couple of months or so.
