I'm having the same problems in the last week or so with
Safari on a Nac Mini.

 > The page in Safari starts to load, but then does nothing - just stops

Clear caches.
Try a diff browser.
Try a diff user account.

Personally, I don't use Safari any more--found too many times it
wouldn't work right for me. I switch off between FireFox and iCab
when I want to do any online work.

I have to admit, I'm becoming less and less enamoured with Safari.
Seems like after each Tiger update, it's become slower and has more
problems viewing sites. Firefox and iCab don't have these
difficulties.

Re: [OT] The old days

2006-02-03 Thread Dyna

Amen!

I'm retired at age 55 with no debt because for the last
couple decades I've bought what I need instead of what I want. I buy
a new compact car every 10 years, live in a house I inherited and
rehabbed, and buy the cheapest new Mac every 5 years or so. My one
disappointment with Apple was when I gave in and laid out $2200 for a
Pismo that didn't even make it 5 years. My $800 iMac amd $500 Mac
Mini are doing just fine though.

Meanwhile, my friend has been doing her part to juice the
economy- she and her partner buy a new $25,000 minivan every 3 years,
move every 10 years, and will probably never be solvent enough to
retire. I finally talked her into a Mac to replace the $2000+ PC she
bought 5 years ago. A $500 Mac Mini would have met her e-mail and web
surfing needs just fine but instead she pulled out her plastic
and blew nearly $2000 on a loaded iMac with the unproven Intel
processor. She justified this overkill by saying she needs the
capacity to do video, but she doesn't even own a digital camera
so she'll blow another thousand on that.

Propping up the economy is not my responsibility...

Dyna

And whether it be Mac or Intel, Micro$soft or Motorola, it keeps the
economy going. The idea is to buy, buy, buy. This iBook is the 2nd
new Mac I've ever had-the first was a Classic: six or so others were
all 2nd or 3rd hand. I won't tell you how I got most software
because it will start more arguments about Respect For The Law. I'm
a crappy consumer, not putting my shoulder to the wheel any more
than necessary. That's why I like "low-end Mac" - there are more
than enough sites and posts about high-end Mac.

I've got plenty of bandwidth though, because I'm about the only

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

Howard and Amber, perhaps my age is showing here, and the
fact that I don't work in the computer biz. I was raised in the day
when you were expected to pay for things like new books, bicycles,
etc But once you'd bought them they were yours and you could loan
or give your magazine or bicycle to a friend or neighbor as you
wished.

What has happened in the past few years is that the software
companies, telcos, and cable companies have managed to pass
tyrannical laws that stand centuries of legal tradition dating back
to english common law on it's head. As a result people working in the
computer biz are terrified that they'll be fired and blacklisted for
installing an unwrapped copy of Windoze 95 on a friends old computer,
etc.

For us ordinary civilians who do not rely on the Micro$oft et
al food chain for our sustenance this paranoia is pretty ridiculous.
For example over the years when I had nothing to do at work I'd
download my e-mail from the coffee shop across the streets Wi-Fi. I
also went over their on breaks often and bought coffee and such. Was
I stealing, or merely taking advantage of a free service they were
providing? While travelling at night I have also parked next to a
closed public library and used their Wi-Fi to check my e-mail, the
weather, etc Was that stealing?

Now if I were to walk into my local police station and turn
myself in for these crimes they'd laugh me outa the place- they have
real crime to deal with and don't want to be bothered with this BS.
If I really insisted and it was a slow day they might write me a
ticket for petty misdeanor theft and give me a phone number to call
to set a court date months off. When I arrived in "court" (most
likely an office cubicle with a fresh out of law school referee
presiding) my case would go to the bottom of the docket. Around 5 pm,
after all the real petty misdemeanors had been dealt with, I'd get my
day in court. His eye on the clock, the prosecuting attorney would
offer to drop the charges... when I refused to accept that he'd tell
me to prosecute myself then, and head out the door. The referee would
sentence me to one hours probation and maybe $100 court costs if I
complained further as she put on her jacket and raced out the door.

So let's quit being paranoid and let some common sense prevail.

Actually, the latter is normally against your terms of service so it
is theft of service - not from you, but from the cable company.
You allowing it to happen makes you just as guilty.

Granted, the telcos and cable industry with their lobbyists

Just because the laws governing the theft of signal are currently
difficult to enforce, it doesn't mean it's okay to break these laws.

It would seem that as long as you can get away with something, it's
okay for you or others to do it.

Here is an example of a law being temporarily unenforceable - There
is a major riot going on in a large city and people are looting
stores/businesses left and right because there are not enough police
resources to apprehend them. Laws are still being broken. Theft
and vandalism are still are occurring. Just because these people
are not being caught and charged does not mean a crime has not been
committed.

Not true - it is theft of service and you are intruding, even though

The signal you pick up is likely only open simply because a resident

Apple markets the iBook to schools with the implied assurance
that it is capable of withstanding the abuse school kids can deliver.
I would thusly raise unholy hell with Apple and remind them that your
family will personally lobby against any purchase of Apples by your
school district, etc.. Hopefully Apple will realize that keeping your
family as long term customers is more important than making a quick
profit gouging you on repairs.

If Apple no longer wants your family's business I would start
looking for another similar iBook with other failed parts like a
display. Given that a new 1.2 gig iBook goes for $900 at amazon.com I
wouldn't spend more that $700 for a working 1.0 gig one and half that
for one that needs repairs. After your done swapping parts you'll
have a working iBook and lots of bits left over for future repairs...
and the satisfaction of denying Apple the opportunity to gouge you
again!

BTW, my problem Pismo is sorta working after I put some fresh
heat sink paste on the processor- it managed a whole day without
freezing! I'm also in the market for another Pismo, dead or alive,
within a day's drive of Minneapolis.

is less than it would cost to fix my lemon Pismo and upgrade it to

Dyna
Chris,
Good deal, until you find a MicroCenter selling a 1.0 gHz, 512m RAM,
30 g HD, Combo drive, 12" iBook brand new in the box for $617. The
outer shipping box was marked 256m RAM, but the Apple box was 512m
RAM. Neither had been opened. The guy who bought it had an $849
refurb on order with Apple at the time. He called to stop the order
and buy the $617 iBook. Apple lowered the price by $40, still not
enough in his case. Food for thought.

Re: My Pismo is dead-nothing??

2005-03-05 Thread Dyna
Might be easier for you to just buy another Pismo and swap your processor,
ram and HD into it, then keep your dead one for parts.
Andrew
Problem is, after paying $400-500 for a working Pismo you may
find it soon develops the same problems. Thusly I'm in the market for
malfunctioning and dead Pismos for parts and have set an upper limit
of $100 that I'll pay for one.

Another solution is to buy one of the leftover 1 ghz iBooks
for $800 and get Applecare because they're pretty much throwaway
computers. Or do what Apple wishes we blind worshippers would do and
lay out twice as much for a new Powerbook that could die the day
after AppleCare expires. But the best solution may be for all of us
stuck with Lemon Pismos to pressure Apple for a buy back al la 5300s-
with the current class action suits Apple may not want another batch
of angry customers!

Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?

2005-02-24 Thread Dyna
If you compare a VW and a Mercedes you will see tires, a steering
wheel, seats... does that make them equal?
Which VW and Daimler-Chrysler products are you comparing- VW
makes cars from the low priced subcompacts up to the Phaeton,
Touraeg/Cayanne, Audi, and Bentley and light and medium trucks.
Daimler Chrysler competes with VW in every market segment from the A
class subcompacts and Neon through several SUVs wearing Dodge, Jeep,
and Mercedes badging as well as the traditional Mercedes and Chrysler
midrange and luxury cars. Daimler-Chrysler also produces Setra buses,
Freightliner, Sterling, and Western Star trucks, Detroit Diesel
engines, and owns half of MTM industrial engines. So just what
"Mercedes" and "VW" were you comparing?

Yes, but when that processor is going to have to spend a lot of time
dealing with spyware and virii, it's going to be much less efficient
than in some lab.
And if that processor is running under Linux it will have no
more problems with such vermin that a Mac running OSX.

That's hilarious. Linux is still a playground for people who have
more time than money. I like that even your own words indicate that
you would be assured of tearing your hair out, but it would be free.
That was partly true 5 years ago. In 1998 I installed Redhat
5.2 on a Mitsubushi AMiTY mini laptop and it was a challenge. A
couple months back I installed Suse on a couple year old PC for a
friend and it was much easier, taking less than an hour.

Correction: "For the user on a tight budget with plenty of copious
free time and a very high comfort level with computers and a
willingness to dig under the hood of their computers."
Again, having done a Linux installation recently I know
otherwise. Getting complex applications like a screen reader for a
blind user can entail some work, but that's an application Apple
doesn't offer at any price.

I've had my Mac for almost a year, and it has paid for itself in the
time that I have spent using it rather than fixing it.
That was true of my first Mac, the 333 mhz iMac I'm typing
this on. Since then I've probably spent more time trying to make my
Pismo work than it took to get Linux running.

Your "average user" is a complete myth.
Not entirely- in any mass market product like computers the
majority will make similar uses of them. In the case of computers
these uses tend to be stuff like web surfing, e-mail, etc. For those
purposes any Mac or Linux running PC will do the job. But for some
users that do stuff like video production, etc. the fastest Mac
available is entirely justified. My loathed manager at work would be
better off with just one terminal so he would be less distracted from
doing his job.

2005-02-24 Thread Dyna
On Feb 23, 2005, at 11:41 PM, Dyna wrote:
Perhaps I should clarify that I'm largely comparing hardware here-
So was he.
OK, so let's compare hardware... I work for America's 3rd
largest employer, the Postal Service. They've been sucked into the
Micro$oft vortex and the official laptop and desktop OS is Windoze,
while the official handheld OS is WinCe. Fortunately the serious
computing like reading addresses is done with Linux. Almost all the
handheld devices we use died a rapid death, there are a few laptops,
and desktops everywhere. The laptops and desktops are supplied by
HP/Compaq along with a very profitable service contract. Most of
these PCs are assigned to supervisors some of whom have so loaded
their hard drives with porn that they can barely do real work. We
even have a supervicor who has brought his game input devices to work
and plugged them in.

The demands on this computing "machinery" are pretty low-
word processing, e-mail, and accessing a web based truck tracking
system. The desktops are too new to justify replacing, so probably
the best solution for those users would be switching to Linux OS and
bringing the tech support in house. One of the advantages of Linux is
the ability to set up the porn surfers and game nuts displays for
text only...

Ultimately these PCs will need replacing and for the desktops
the Mac Mini looks attractive. However, it's reliability is still an
unknown and it costs twice as much as a PC running Linux. There is
however potential for expanding the mobile computing into the trucks.
However, given management's view that drivers are too stupid to
operate a computer and would abuse them if they could, this is not
likely to happen anytime soon. Basicly management sees computers as a
control device and a spy in the cab rather than an enabling device
for drivers.

Thusly the only computers in the truck are unauthorized, like
mine. For 3 years I shagged my Pismo to work and it was a wonderful
tool, making Postal manuals, union contracts, etc. instantly
available in the cab. Unfortunately management was jealous of the
Mac's abilities and scared of the potential of a computer enabled
employee. In fact, they became so paranoid that they seemed to be
looking for justification to subpeona my hard drive.

That Pismo is now so unreliable that I don't bring it to work
anyway. Now if Apple's premium laptop only lasted 3 years in the
truck 40 hours a week when I babied it, how long will an iBook last
living in a truck 168 hours a week with sometimes indifferent users?
Maybe a year at best I suspect that after the first round of
repairs Apple would label the mass failures abuse and refuse to
repair them even under AppleCare. Our techs would then be overwhelmed
by stacks of dead Mac laptops, waiting forever for overpriced
proprietary parts from Apple. I doubt there would be a repeat order...

Clearly my employer would need something like a Panasonic
ToughBook for their trucks, and even after Windoze was evicted and
replaced with Linux it would be far more reliable than any current
Mac portable and thusly have a lower lifetime cost. I found an even
more elegant solution, a Sharp Zaurus 6000 handheld running Linux OS.
It has built in Wi-Fi, does basic word processing, is hardened to
the point it is rated for a 1 meter drop, has no hard drive to
subpeona, and because it fits in my pocket management doesn't know it
exists anyway.

None the less, there is still a small market for Apple at one
of the world's largest computer buyers- one of our most disliked
middle managers has used his discretionary purchasing authority to
decorate his top floor corner office with 3 G4 towers and giant LCD
displays. He does nothing with them that I can't do on my handheld,
and is giving Apple a bad rep amongst his subordinates, who now see
Apple as the big bad boss's toy...

holding a tiny Linux light in the pitch darkness of Windoze,

. Time and again, when you compare Macintosh with similarly
equipped PeeCees, most of the time, the Peecees end up being far more
expensive than the Mac.
-Laurent.
Perhaps I should clarify that I'm largely comparing hardware
here- I have refused gifts of bootleg Windoze with no regrets!
Looking Mac and PC hardware these days one finds that a lot of the
parts (hard drives, optical drives, memory, etc.) are the same. The
Power PC is clearly a more powerful and efficent processor, but the
PC processor will none the less handle most people's computing tasks
capably. As for build quality, many Macs are now built by the same
subcontractors that make PCs so there is no Mac advantage.

In software Macs are clearly far superior to Micro$oft's
attempts, but Linux is reasonably user friendly and will meet most
peoples needs. Given the bugs in OSX, I sometimes wonder why I pay
good money for upgrades when I could be having just as much "fun"
tearing my hair out at 3 am trying to make it work running Linux for
free...

So how much cost premium is a Mac worth? For the user on a
tight budget with basic needs an old PC running Linux will do the job
for less than the cost of a Mac. For me I figure a 20% premium over
PCs is the most I'll pay extra for a Mac. For some, a Mac is a status
symbol like a luxury car and they will pay any amount to obtain one...

Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?

2005-02-23 Thread Dyna
The $500 Mac Mini has upset the whole Mac pricing structure
and the market will force a correction. As a result the eMac is
probably extinct and the the iMac will have to be given a substantial
upgrade and/or it's price cut to under $1000. Meanwhile, the PC
makers have responded to the Mini by offering a PC with Windoze AND
an LCD display for a bit under the Mini's price point. In the laptop
market with Linux and Windoze running PC laptops below $500 there's
no point in spending over $1000 for a laptop. The PowerBook's market
is thusly limited to a small but loyal cadre of Apole devotees and
the iBook will need further price drops to be competitive..

flame away...
Dyna
It's hard to say, Apple did a good job over the last year of falling
completely out of their upgrade cycle in several lines. The iMac G5
has remained the same since September when it was released.
Typically apple revamps each series every 6 months or so, so
March-April would be a good guess, but you can't really say for sure
since so many lines lately have fallen out of the normal routine. I
think the only line that is still on it's normal routine for
revamping is the iBook, but, of course, that could change come this
spring.
If you want one, keep an eye on www.macrumors.com and I wouldn't
wait any longer than a month or month and a half if you absolutely
need the most up to date version.

Well, I am pretty much decided, half the price, G5 instead

However, the PowerBook range was recently updated with
speeds and specs going up, and prices going down, but as
I haven't taken much notice of the iMac, I presume we're
still buying rev.1 machines...
Any rumours, or typical timing of an update ?

Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-25 Thread Dyna
For what it costs and how much Apple hypes the "quality" of
their products AppleCare should be damn near instant. Of course, for
those like me that paid $2200 for a Pismo 4 years ago that now works
when it feels like it AppleCare is no longer available. Now of course
Apple's reccommended solution to this problem is for me to give them
another couple grand for a new AlBook and 3 more years of
Applecare Fat chance!- I can buy a stack of Pismo's for that
kinda money, compute for years on them, and never drop a dime at the
Apple Store again. No wonder Apple's share of the computer market
continues to drop.

But isn't the new Mac Mini supposed to draw in the
"switchers" to replace the old Apple fanatics that have been driven
off? Today at the local MicroCenter store the Mini Mac was being
ignored while the aisles of the "Build Your Own System" section were
busy. With 20% off on BYOS stuff the Shuttle et al "cubes" look
tempting. And one can pretty much see that the PC vendors will match
the Mac Mini on price with an LCD display, keyboard, mouse, etc.
thrown in to boot..

And given Apples recent quality problems, one can easily see
busted Mac Mini's backlogged months for repairs, while the
"switchers" switch right back never to buy Apple again!

Re: Applecare for Powerbooks

I've been trying to suppress a rant on the declining quality of
Apple's products and electronics and consumer products in general for
about a week now, and can bite my tongue no longer.

I expect electronic stuff to last a minimum of 5 years and motor
vehicles at least 10. I have a 20 year old Ten-Tec ham radio
transceiver that works fine, and put over a 1000 trouble free miles a
month on a 1983 BMW motorcycle this year. I also have a '98 Ford Ranger
in the fleet that needed one repair (rear brake linings) in 80,000
miles and an '84 BMW motorcycle that has had no major repairs in
100,000 miles. In my house I have 1985 Epson, 1990 Panasonic, and 1995
Mitsubushi laptops that still work, and on my desk sits an '99 vintage
333 mhz. iMac that has never failed me.

That's the peaches, and now the lemons: A 2001 Yaesu ham transceiver
that is broken beyond repair after less than 2 years service. A 1992
BMW motorcycle that needed $3000 worth of repairs before the warranty
expired. That bike now spends half it's time sitting in my garage
waiting 'til i can get a good deal on used parts to fix it's latest
failures.

Back to warranties... The '83 and '84 BMWs were warrantied for 3 years
and unlimited miles. BMW was never bankrupted by such liberal terms
because they built such a reliable product. One rider even rode 200,000
miles in 3 years, and BMW cheerfully paid for a ring job and minor
repairs. The TenTec's appear to be designed to last forever, and they
still support stuff they made in the '70s- probably because they're
owned by a couple retired hams, make a lot of military electronics,
etc. It's in the DNA- TenTec doesn't know how to make an unreliable
radio. BMW's motorcycle quality went to hell because of the retirement
of some veteran engineers, cost cutting, etc. Yaesu is still suffering
from a merger that left them in a shambles. BMW's solution was to cut
their warranty to 40,000 miles- about the point where their cost
cutting and boy racer engineering causes expensive parts to start
breaking. Yaesu simply stonewalls customers- I have yet to receive a
reply to an e-mail sent months ago.

And Apple?
About the time the G3 PowerBook production was winding down Apple
limited AppleCare protection to the first 3 years of life. I take that
action as an admission that Apple's hardware is now so unreliable and
difficult to repair (compare hard drive replacement on a Pismo to the
latest AlBook) that they'd lose money if they guaranteed it past 3
years. Apple may also be trying to manipulate if not force us to buy a
new Mac every 3 years. I paid $2200 for my Pismo only because I
expected a quality product that would last at least 5 years. After 3
years I am left with a laptop so unreliable I don't take it out of my
house. Suffice to say, I won't be waiting in line at the Apple Store to
buy a new PowerBook or probably anything else Apple.

Pismo Problems, Continued...

2004-12-17 Thread Dyna
Thanks to everyone who suggested fixes for my near dead Pismo. The
hard drive was indeed bad, and I replaced it with a new 40 gig Hitachi
and added 256 megs of RAM while I was in there to up the total RAM to
384 megs. Despite all this new hardware the Pismo often needed repeated
reboots to start up and usually froze up after it had been running a
while. So following the advice given to the new Lombard owner with
similar problems I pulled and reseated the processor card and it's RAM.

The Pismo now usually boots up and goes to work, but occasionally
freezes after an hour or more of use. It then refuses to boot until I
disconnect all power and I sometimes have to disconnect the PRAM
battery as well. This seems to be a common problem with the G3
PowerBooks, and makes one wonder if some component is failing as it
ages past AppleCare's 3 year coverage limit and refuses to function
after it warms up... any theories or even fixes?

thanks again for all the help- at least my Pismo now works sometimes!

The half price offer on Jaguar for federal employees has me
tempted... but I have a lot of questions about Jaguar that Apple's
web site hasn't answered. First, will my classic aps still run?
Second, will installing Jaguar destroy all the data on my hard drive?

thanks,
    Dyna

Walt, it's good to see that you've been doing more than your
share to help support our ailing computer industry. I bought my first
computer 20 years ago, and haven't in those 20 years spent as much as
you have in the last year and not quite a half. And every one of
those computers is still in my home and works.

I know I should really do more to help prop up the economy
and help fill our landfills with last year's computers. And speaking
of landfills- I could have saved at least one of those cute little
iCubes from such a fate! I feel awful- I'm going to dig out my debit
card and order one of everything Apple makes right now. And just to
make sure I'm never solvent again, I'll put the balance of my assets
in Apple stock!

in best humor,
Dyna

I can find no compelling reason to replace my 333mhz iMac

I imagine Ford would like me to trade in my 5 year old pickup
and finance a new one. No thanks- I'll wait a few more years and be
able to pay cash.

>(2) the improvements come

In the early days of both motor vehicles and computers this
was true. The personal computer is now over a quarter century old and
the Mac is now getting close to 20 years old, especially if you count
the Lisa. A new iMac won't do e-mail, surf the web, or process words
much better than my 3 year old one.

Let me get this right- I'm supposed to bin my working 3 year
old iMac for a new one at upwards of $1300? Just so I can impress
every one with how cl it looks?

I can by a new desktop PC, monitor, and linux distro for
$600. Why should I spend $800 more for that fancy new iMac?
Especially given that a desktop PC is pretty generic, thusly cheap
and easy to maintain... unlike the iMac with it's many proprietary
parts.

Re: Manuals WARNING:o)

2002-05-30 Thread Dyna

David, from what I've heard the older PowerBooks were quite
reliable. However, my Pismo has the feel of a cheap toy. It's never
been dropped, but the left rear corner of the case is cracked and the
IR cover has fallen out. The battery keeps falling out so I've had to
tape it in.

I motorcycle too, but usually not with my PowerBook. It's too
heavy to carry in my courier bag and takes up way too much space. I
doubt if it would long survive the vibration of my BMWs, never mind
the Buell.

I've come to consider the availability of servicing
information damn near a constitutional right. Without manuals and
such my PowerBook will probably be one failure away from the dumpster
when the extended warranty expires. Apple will only sell you 3 years
warranty, which perhaps says something about the durability of their
hardware. I expect at least 5 years use from electronic stuff, and 10
years from motor vehicles. The BMW I rode to work today is 18 years
old, and in that time 2 local dealers have gone out of business and
the 3rd is useless. Without a manual it would have been binned long
ago. I also have a Ten-Tec ham radio transceiver from the early 1980s
that came with a very complete manual. It thusly still works fine and
will continue to do so for years to come. These items are "keepers",
while the Pismo seems a throwaway toy by comparison.

Apple seems to think they'll force me to lay out a couple
grand for a new PowerBook every 3 years. I don't reward such
banditry, and will by my next computer elsewhere. If Apple had
treated me better I'd buy a new PowerBook every 5 years- instead
their greed has completely lost me as a customer.

peace,
Dyna
