Hello Barb.
Does the Wallstreet recognise the battery.I had a problem with
mine in this way and the battery reset programme from apple put it
back on its tracks. This programme is a free download from the Apple
site.

Good luck.John in UK.

I can't get the battery charger to charge a battery. Does anyone know
what the problem might be. The Wallstreet runs when connected to the
power adaptor, but does not run with the battery. I've even bought a
new battery, but it still doesn't work.

Re: VST Zip MCE CDRW

2004-04-07 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hi Listers

Just to let you know that both drives are now functioning OK.

It has to be conflicts. when I booted and bring up extension
manager, I selected OS 9.2.2 base.
It continued to boot right on to the desktop with at first the Zip in
the RH bay. With media then inserted I was able to view and copy
files back and forth. I did the same with the CD - RW and was able
to mount a CD onto the desktop.

I then decided to try and burn a disk, so after ticking the Toast
extension and rebooting I launched Toast (V4). I copied some files
into the box then burned the disc all performed OK.

Next I removed the battery from the LH bay and inserted the Zip, then
rebooted and during the boot up it froze. Rebooted again with base
OS 9.2.2 and all was Ok zip worked and CD -RW mounted disks onto the
desktop, so one of the conflicts is with Toast.

I now have two dedicated sets of extensions to use with the drives
and a copy of the base OS to play around with, to perhaps find what
else conflicts.

Have a great Easter

You may have old or incorrect zip extensions, a bad cdrw module, or you may
have bent or fried an internal connector.
Thanks for the guidance.

May I say that If the the internal connector was fried, the floppy
would not work in the LH bay and the CD rom would not work in the RH
bay, am I correct. But they both do, so why not the Zip in place of
the floppy and the CD RW in place of the CD rom ?.As both units
were tested before being supplied to me, I have to assume it is
extension conflicts as there is no visible bent connectors.
I downloaded drivers from Iomega and MCE sites so will try these to
see if they make the drives perform.
Thanks again.

VST Zip MCE CDRW

2004-04-04 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hi Listers

I have a frustrating problem I am unable to solve.

I have a Wallstreet 233 (w /cache) OS 9.2.2. I had supplied with it
a floppy which I use in LH bay and the CD rom in the RH side, both
of these perform OK.As the floppy has its limitations regarding
backup etc I decided to add a Iomega(VST) 100 Mb zip drive. Before I
got around to trying to use it an MCE CDRW for the Wallstreet became
available for me to buy, so I went for it.

So now I have the Zip to go in the LH and the CDRW to go in the RH,
correct you may say, unfortunately the Wallstreet does not want to
know.

With the zip inserted and the WS booted it freezes when the Iomega
icon appears during its boot up stage. The only option is to
restart and quickly remove the Zip then it boots OK. If I turn off
all the Iomega extensions then proceed as above it freezes when
trying to launch the Desktop.

As for the CDRW no problem there regarding booting to the desktop,
but when any media is inserted ie: a programme installation disc, it
rotates in to life then stops with out launching the disc Icon on to
the desktop.

I tried boot from a Norton disc with the Zip in and it boots to the
desktop. With media inserted I requested to find missing disc and it
did so. Unfortunately this is not possible with the CDRW as you
need the drive in order to run the Norton disc.

Do I need any new drivers in order to use the drives or are there
just conflicts which need to be sorted. If the former a visit to
the respective sites should resolve this, if the latter where should
I be looking to find the conflicts. Is the zip problem with it
being a VST model not Iomega as the internal is an Iomega drive.

Your ideas would be most appreciated

Re: Wallstreet and Brother HL-1240 Printer

2004-03-08 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hi Listers,

My USB issue has been solved.

My brother ( a SuSe Linux user ) pointed me in the direction of this
site with a log of discussions regarding a USB problem

The info on: http://www.macintouch.com/mos9usb.html was very useful.
When time permitted me to read it in detail I found out that I was
not alone in the problem I was trying to solve.

The extensions on:
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit were the
answer.

I created a folder on two floppies. One to hold the new extensions,
the other to copy the old ones into in case of a problem. When
this was done the old ones trashes from the computer not the
floppies. All I did then was to shutdown and then reboot. When I
checked the chooser and the ASP the printer was identified and
selected in the chooser. A small email was selected to print and
this was done with ease.

Hope this helps other listers with the same problem.

Do you have a USB keyboard or mouse you can plug in to check the
operation of the USB. This is the process I use. A keyboard or
mouse is best as support for these are built in. My gut feel is that
you still have a USB card problem, APS should show the printer
otherwise. I've had the best luck installing the USB card drivers
from the OS 9 disk. If you run it after an install it will give you
the option of adding or deleting parts.

I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway
Unfortunately I have no other USB items to be able to check the
operation of the USB.

Perhaps as you have suggested installing a later USB card driver from
the OS 9 disk will help, so I will try this.

One thing I did notice when I downloaded the latest driver from the
Brother site is that it was listed for OS 8.6 - 9.2.1. There was no
mention of 9.2.2, perhaps this is the problem no support for OS
9.2.2.

Wallstreet and Brother HL-1240 Printer

2004-03-01 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

I apologize in advance for the length of this listing.

Could someone help me with a problem I am encountering.

I have a Wallstreet 233 MHz (II) that I am trying to link to a
Brother HL-1240 Lazer printer with a Belkin 2 port USB 2 card bus
card.

I downloaded the Apple 1.4.1 card support application and loaded plus
the printer driver that came with the printer. No Mac software
driver came with the Belkin card as the Apple card support
application should take care of this. Other listers have had success
with this make of card so compatibility should be OK.

The card is seen by APS but with the printer switched on no printer
is seen. Chooser shows the printer icon on the left but when clicked
on nothing is seen on the right. I have looked on the Brother Web
site for any additional info but could only find an up dated driver
so I downloaded this.

I tried to load the new driver and also tried to reinstall the driver
for card bus support. Unfortunately when I try to install any
software a dialog box appears, informing me that no software can be
installed whilst br-background is running and to quit this
application and retry.

As this must refer to the Brother printer I have searched for some
time to find what is running this as br_background is an extension.
I had no success so I decided to trash every thing that referred to
the Brother printer, this went OK until I tried to trash
br_backdround. Another box appeared informing me that as other
applications were using it it could not be thrown away.

So until I resolve this I am unable to make progress in resolving the
USB-printer problem or installing any other software at all.

So any help is appreciated.

John Abraham

I had a similar problem. I solved mine by the following with help
from the other listers:
My W/S would not boot at all with the battery installed AC adaptor
connected. This I found was due to a dead battery PRAM battery.

If I removed the main battery it would boot with the AC adaptor
connected but when the battery was installed the W/S would not
recognize it and thus not charge it.

I have found out that with a dead battery the PRAM will not charge as
the W/S needs a small amount of charge in the main battery in order
to charge the PRAM.

I then found out that a Apple programme called Battery Reset 2
would rectify a problem of the W/Snot being unable to recognize the
battery.

I found a copy of this programme by finding in on Version Tracker
then installed it. This solved the problem as the battery was now
seen by the W/S, charging began and the PRAM also as the date time
kept correct each time it was switched off. The W/S would now also
boot from the battery without the AC adaptor or with battery left in
and adaptor connected.

Hope this helps.

Re: PRAM/Backup battery in WallStreet - Battery Reset

2004-02-03 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

Thank you all for the additional info,

I did notice the link to the site for good battery prices and will
also try the battery reset programme.

I have noticed that the battery is not being seen by the PB. It
reports that the LH media bay is empty and there are no leads alight
on the side of the battery. This I suspect is because I did not
use it over the Christmas / New Year period and beyond. The
battery must be flat and thus the Pram also, as without any power in
the main battery the Pram discharged as well.

As for Jim's problem I am not sure if it relates to the PRAM as the
sign normally is that the date has reset to the year 1904.Showing
that the PRAM has run out of charge if the PB is keeping time but
loosing or gaining seconds this may be another fault.

My Wallstreet Date Time function consistently seems to lose about
15-30 seconds as evidenced by the adjustment that occurs almost every
time when I tell the control panel to manually set time now. It
seems oblivious to the interval between those checks. Also, it may
actually be more serious since the CPanel is supposed to auto-check
for differences often anyway and I am merely noting what changes the
auto function has not fixed.
Is this kind of thing clearly indicative of bad PRAM battery? I have
not noted other problems other than the usual aggravating random
crashes that dog me from time to time.
Thanks, Jim

For sure, that's the first thing to do if you haven't had it on
external power for an extended period lately.
As we are talking WallStreets here, don't forget the Apple Battery Reset
application (sorry, don't have the link handy).
This application has revived my WallStreet battery several times, when I
might otherwise have assumed the battery was dead (no longer holding any
charge).
I know that a few times I have run out of battery power completely and
probably the PRAM/backup battery has run out as well. The main battery
refuses to recharge until it is reset by Battery Reset. Maybe a sign of a
faulty power manager board (also quite common, it seems).
Worth a shot...

Mike
Thanks again John Abraham.

Sometimes the PRAM battery runs down and won't power the PRAM/clock.
In some cases the battery will recharge if the computer is left
plugged in overnight.

It does have a PRAM battery. It's a rechargeable battery but it can
eventually fail. It's harder to replace than a PRAM battery on a
desktop machine.
Does this mean that before i go about trying to replace the PRAM
battery I first need to try and recharge it.

PRAM battery

2004-02-01 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

I am new to PowerBooks but not to Macs.

I suspect the PRAM battery has failed on my WallStreet 233 mhz
revised model with 512k cache.
The date keeps on needing to be reset every time I bootup. On my
desktop Mac this is normally corrected with a new PRAM battery which
I have fitted my self.
I have checked in many books to find what a PowerBook PRAM battery
looks like and where it is fitted inside but with out any luck.
Could someone point me in the direction for this information, and
what type of battery and cost could I expect. The desktop version is
normally under £10.00 UK and I am able to obtain one at a good
electronics shop. Would this apply to the PowerBook version.
Thanks for any info

John Abraham.

Re: Combo drives for WallStreet

2004-01-05 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hi Listers

A little while ago, see part of previous message below, information
was sought for a DVD/CDRW combo drive for a Wallstreet.

I know I have seen some mention of a CDRW for this model some years
back but I am still searching my archive Magazines for the info.

In the mean time a Google search has brought up a Lowendmac archive
with some useful info for a DVD ROM/CDRW for this model.

1: www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3series.shtml
2: www.lowendmac.com/ibook/01/1008.html(hash sign)1 (sorry hash not
on keyboard)

Will post again when I find the info on CDRW

I was wondering if anyone would know where one could obtain an
expansion bay combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) for a WallStreet G3. There
seems to be no shortage of such drives for Lombards and Pismos (I'm
guessing the similar drive bay design helps), but I haven't had any
luck finding one for WallStreet.
I don't know of any such drives for WS, though I'd be very glad to hear
about 'em if they do exist. I'm not even aware of any CD-R/RW drives
actually, let alone combo drives.

Re: CardBus USB 2

Hi

Just a quick note to say that I have just bought a Belkin USB 2.0
Cardbus adapter, for which the box has no mention of Mac OS
compatibility (and neither has the Belkin site, for that matter).
It worked right out of the box on my 15 TiBook, running 10.2.6.

(If anyone is wondering why would I want/need usb 2, let me add that
it is meant to be used with my wife's wallstreet, which, of course,
lacked usb of any sort; so I might as well skip 1.1 and get a usb 2
card for very little more)
Luis Sequeira
Hi Luis,

I looked at this model to use on my Wallstreet as it looked very neat
and compact but as it had no listing for Mac OS I opted for the USB
1.1 Belkin model. I would like to know if it is indeed running as a
USB 2 as I thought that the Mac OS did not cover USB 2. Could it
be that it is just running as a USB 1.1.

If you get around to trying it in the Wallstreet just let us know if
it indeed runs OK, I just might consider buying one.
