Friends,

The message posted to these lists late last Friday did not come from
me. Good portions of it were quoted from things I had written in the
past, but I would never use these lists to look for a partner. I'm
doing quite nicely with Yahoo Personals, Match.com, and eHarmony, thank
you.

I appreciate the notes of encouragement, but the posting was
fraudulent. Someone spoofed my return address, and we are investigating.

Re: Looking for printer suggestions

2005-08-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
I should have mentioned that I run OS 9.2.2 on my
Wallstreet. Looks like I would need to use my Powerprint v4.5 serial to
parallel cable with the ML-1740.

Has anyone used a powerprint cable with a
Samsung lower end black and white laser...? (Circuit City is close by
and the current $80
rebate on the Samsung ML-1740 is highly attractive.)

If so, can you please tell me the printer
driver you selected from the powerprint compatibility list and if you
had to
make any setting changes for the printer set up. Thanks, Kerry

Re: Looking for printer suggestions

2005-08-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Thanks for that Al. It's a relief to know that (for my current
requirements at any rate) I can narrow my choices down to laser.
I'll look at CR--I have the May issue. But the icing on the cake--and
probably the cake itself since CR has let me down on occasion--is you
guys' experience and input. Kerry

The best strategy is two printers. For excellent black and white text
use a black and white laser printer. There are nice consumer models
out for $150 - $200 from HP and Brother. For color, you may get by
nicely with a cheaper color ink-jet. The real cost over the years is
for the ink-jet cartridges anyway. HP and Canon Pixma series get
consistently good reviews. The Consumer Reports of May 2005 gives
ratings on 17 ink-jets and 3 B&W lasers. Machome magazine of Sep 2005
has reviews of ink-jets. Macworld.com has reviews on line and you can
loads more at PC World and PC Magazine. Google by brand name/model.

Re: Looking for printer suggestions

2005-08-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Thank you Ron. I believe I have the Powerprint software, but if not your
offer is much appreciated and I'll be back! As I'm on a tight budget,
I'm now looking at either the Samsung suggested by Brian with its mega
rebate or an old HP as you suggest (I love the HPs my employer
uses--real workhorses.)
All this info you've provided is so useful--I have a lot to learn.
Kerry

If you need high quality text, a laser printer is the only way to go.

With the PowerPrint cable you can use almost any printer. I have a
powerprint cable attached to an old HP Laserjet 4L(parallel) and it
works well for text. You can find older HP laserjets fairly cheap if
you are on a budget. With the Powerprint cable and software you can
use any HP parallel or mac serial laser printer and most other
parallel printers. HP made Mac serial LaserJets which were designated
with an "M" in the model number. ie: LaserJet 4ML instead of the 4L.
Same printer but with a serial port for Macs.

If you don't have the PowerPrint software I can send an older version
to you or show you where to download it. It's basically abandonware
now anyway. The newer PP software can be found on Ebay but is for USB
to parallel cables and may not work.

Or you can buy a new LaserJet as suggested but if you need quality
text stay away from inkjet printers. Inkjets eat ink and get really
expensive compared to a good Laser printer and the quality is not even
close.

Samsung ML-1740 $58 at circuitcity.com for a 17ppm laser; USB or
parallel
interface on it, drivers fro 8.6 and higher from Samsung Australia.

Much more efficient than inkjet, if you print a lot. And even if you
print
little (no clogged carts).

concerned about color/graphics.)
Thanks for any recommendations you may have.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem/recommend repairer city of Chicago?

2005-03-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Many thanks again Bruce & Malcolm. Sounds like the cost may not be too
horrific?
That brings me to another Q before I hit the Internet/Yellow
Pages---might anyone happen to have a recommendation for a reasonably
priced G3/Wallstreet repairer within the city of Chicago (not the
suburbs--I don't have wheels), or failing that, a mail-in repair
company? (I did come across one on the net that sends you the box, picks
up and gives you an estimate for $79, but I didn't keep the name and now
can't find them again).
I have seriously thought about attempting it on my own, after looking at
the reassuring pbfixit site & guides--it would save $$$, plus it's
tempting to test my skills or lack of them in a live-dangerously sort of
way. But knowing how inexperienced I am, common sense prevails--I
really need to get someone experienced to do it as time is of the
essence.
Thanks again! I really appreciate it! Kerry

The symptoms are the same, so I'm going to stick to the diagnosis of a
bad cable or cable connection. Better than the alternative, which is
that the video ram is failing, in which case it's new logic board time
for you.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-15 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Hi again Bruce, Ken, Malcom

Re my distorted screen problem, and following on from your much
appreciated responses, it turns out my 1998 Wallstreet is a 14.1 inch
screen. (I understand the Wallstreet 13.3 inch screen model has
recognised problems with its cables but not usually the case with the
14.1 inch screen.)

I also wanted to mention, in case it's relevant, that the screen hinges
appear to be fine, ie they are not floppy or rough and the screen stays
in what ever lean-back position I choose. (I gather Wallstreet hinges
are a bit of a weakness.)

In light of the above, I'm wondering if this makes any difference to the
diagnosis?

best, Kerry PS: Thanks Bruce for pointing me towards the
http;//www.pbfixit.com> guides. The people that wrote them are very
convincing in their assurance that anyone can follow the guides, which I
like. It's not often you come across such understanding for the angst
that computer dummies such as myself feel when faced with the prospect
of taking their precious laptop apart.

In the trouble shooting section, I can only find this similar sounding
trouble:

13.3" screen flickers
or shows intermittent
vertical lines

Carefully squeeze the upper left side of the display bezel. If the
problem disappears, dispatch unit for display cable replacement
(13.3" displays only). Do not replace I/O logic board or display.

If I was a betting man I'd guess you had the 13.3in screen and the
screen
cable was loose - a very common problem.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-15 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Thanks Bruce--it's a Wallstreet (thanks VERY much for laying the options
out, too).
The first time the problem occurred, I rebooted immediately (I was still
able to see enough of the menu at the top of screen to do this). After I
rebooted, the screen actually showed up worse--it was still covered in
dotted lines, with the icons unrecognizable, but now the menus at the
top had all but disappeared. I had forgotten the keyboard commands to
shut down so had to leave the machine for several days until I got the
keyboard combination.
Next time I rebooted, using the keyboard, was 5 days later, and at first
things looked hopeful: however, while the screen had almost cleared, it
still showed two short black dotted lines almost halfway down it. Plus,
there were "pulsating" dotted lines at the very top and bottom of the
screen. (Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have even noticed these, but by
now I'm looking for every little aberration.)
After I logged on, and began scrolling down the first page of the site I
was on, the problem started all over. A mass of dotted lines replaced
the text and graphics.
Hope that gives some insight.
Kerry

two questions:

What model do you have?
What does the screen look like when you reboot?

There were 4 G3 Mac Powerbook models.

The original Powerbook G3, which looks like a 5300, aka the Kanga.

<http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3.shtml>

Then there was the Powerbook G3 Series, aka the Wallstreet.

<http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3series.shtml> (also a series II)

It has two PCMCIA slots and SCSI on the back.

Next was the Powerbook G3 (bronze Keyboard) aka the Lombard. It has
only one pcmcia slot, SCSI and USB ports, and the afore mentioned
bronze keyboard. (kinda brownish transparent keys)

<http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/lombard.shtml>

Finally there was the Powerbook G3 Series Firewire, aka the Pismo. It
has no SCSI, but does have firewire slots, and the same bronze
keyboard.

The fact that it got worse after being on a longer time implies a
hardware problem, getting worse as the system gets hotter.

anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-14 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Hi all
I'm a newbie to the list, so please forgive me if I breach protocol in
any way!
I've used Macs for years, but this is my first G3. And I've just run up
against a big problem, one that I've never encountered before, and which
prevents me using it at all.
I'll try and be as clear and concise as possible, and give as many clues
as I can:
My G3, OS 9.1, which altho not new, is new to me--I've been using it for
about a month.
Last week when I booted up I noticed that a few dotted lines had
strangely appeared on my desktop screen.
I went ahead with my project of the evening, anyway, which was to
download OutlookExpress506ENU.bin.
By the time the download was done, the screen was covered in a rash of
dotted lines and the cursor had a shadow that looked a bit like the
shape of 2 AA batteries trailing behind it.
I was still able to get on the Internet, and the opening page of the
website I went to was ok. However, as soon as I began scrolling
down--not before I scrolled down--the text and graphics on the page were
replaced by a rash of dotted lines making it impossible to continue. It
didn't matter which method I used to scroll--dragging the right-hand
sidebar down, clicking on the little black down arrow, or using the
keyboard arrow--the effect was the same. I noticed that clicking on a
part of the page restored that small part of the page to "normal." By
the time I got back to the desktop, to shut the laptop down, the desktop
was extremely distorted and the menu at the top had disappeared. I had
to use the keyboard to shut down.
That essentially is the problem.
Here is some additional information which may or may not be useful:
1. I've had the laptop for 3-4 years without using it--just powering it
up from time to time to make sure it hadn't died on me.
I only began to seriously get it up and running about a month ago. My
brother-in-law (who had kindly given the laptop to me), was worried
there might be a PRAM issue when the
date went haywire about six weeks ago, ago, but installation of a good
battery seemed to solve the problem (so I haven't done anything with the
PRAM).
2. I had been successfully word processing.
3. I had been successfully using the Internet, but I needed to upgrade
from 4.5 Internet Explorer, which I did, successfully, after downloading
Aladdin.
4. I subscribed to the ISP fastermac.net a month or so ago, but realized
I needed to upgrade my Outlook Express (altho I can receive email at
fastermac.net, I found that I can't send it, until I upgrade from the
current Outlook Expres 4.5).
5. The evening I noticed the dotted lines on the screen was the evening
I planned to download OutlookExpress506ENU.bin. I did download, but
while the download was going on, the screen was becoming covered in
dotted lines. I don't think it was the download that caused the problem,
since (as I mentioned previously) I had noticed a few stray dotted lines
on the screen when I booted up.
If anyone is familiar with this scenario and knows what's going on I
would really, really appreciate the feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Kerry M.
