Re: Macquarium

2003-06-30 Thread Matt Peacock
Please do not do this.

Screens are under extreme pressure. They also hold a substantial charge
even after being turned off. I am very worried you could get seriously
injured. Also the coating in a screen would no doubt be toxic to fish.
I do not know what it is, if anyone does post it and I'll tell you if
it is or not.

Is it possible to cut the front off (whatever the advice I

I will endevour to cut the front off the tube and silicone

Re: Macquarium (OT)

2003-06-30 Thread Matt Peacock
Ah, thats ok then.

I've dealt with loads of people before who just open up things with
capacitors the size of a house, and look blank when you say No, thats
dangerous. Bad..

For polishing the coating off, I recommend brasso. It gets rid of
anything! Once you have it clean wash it in hot water a number of
times, I would think that would be fine. Do you know the clarity of
screens? (I don't) Are you certain you will get a satisfactory result,
as far as i know they are quite think and also would the 'mesh' be a
problem?

It's a nice idea nonetheless, would certainly look fantastic if
successful.

Re: Macquarium (OT)

2003-06-30 Thread Matt Peacock
Screens are under extreme pressure.
Actually, they contain a vacuum.
Or rather, they don't contain anything...;o)

lol. Yes I'm not sure why I typed that, but I'm well aware that they
are vacuum filled. Must have been too early in the morning :p

(I know flat screen is the biz when it comes to screens, but IMO
when it comes to Macquariums, curved screens are the biz... ;o)
My bow-fronted aquariums look much larger than the flat ones due to the
magnification a curve provides. They also look so much cooler :p

Re: Unreal Tournament on Pismo?

2003-06-23 Thread Matt Peacock
Yes you'll be fine, UT is very CPU dependent, and you have no problems
there. Your 8MB will render an excellent 640x480 game and a very good
800x600 game, you'll find you can set the detail levels quite high
as-well. For internet play, you might want to knock down the number of
players by a couple.

That is, if you are talking about the original Unreal Tournament. If
you are talking about UT2003, forget it. People with dual 1.25GHz are
getting crap frame-rates out of it, hopefully patches will bring it up
to speed.

Re: Are there any alternatives to Aqua window manager?

2003-06-22 Thread Matt Peacock
I completely understand. I have a PowerBook G4 and still notice the
sluggishness. Even Classic is fantastically snappy compared to X.
The reason is that OS X has fantastic multi-tasking capabilities, at
the sacrifice of UI responsiveness. OS 9 stops everything while you
hold down the mouse button, OS X stops nothing.

Apple's own internal tests cited this as a major focus area (along with
boot-up and login time), and one that has been tackled in Panther.
Although it pains me to say it, it looks as if you are going to have to
shell out for another OS upgrade.

get no noticeable improvements.
The eye candy may look good but I'm getting quite fed up with it.
When you work with a computer on an everyday basis it's hard to accept
the time you loose while looking at window animations and transparent
menus.
I'm thinking of buying one of the faster Powerbook G4 but I'd like to
see Apple try to please their costumers, even the ones that don't have
the money to buy a new computer, before a give (a lot) of my money to
them.
I once tried Yellow Dog on the Pismo. Color correction was all wrong -
the LCD was rather bluish, the OpenGL drivers were buggy but the
screen was Fast! Faster than the 1GHz Pentium III with Redhat/Sawfish
I use at work. Why is OS X/Aqua like this? Even computer games have
performance tunning options.
Anyone has any sugestions?

most techs use plastic bins - you can get them at Office Max, Office
Depot, etc etc, and at most computer stores that also sell tools -
MicroCenter, Fry's, etc. effectively, they're just like ice-cube
trays, but with more compartments and a top.

Yep, thats what I do, it's very useful (once you've taken a few laptops
apart and NOT marked what goes where, you'll understand how important
this is. No you won't remember when you come back to it the next day!)

lots of techs also use paper cups in mostly the same way, but they
stack the paper cups as they go.

Now there's a good idea...

PowerBook G4 12/17 Battery Problems

2003-06-09 Thread Matt Peacock
Hi,

I, along with other G-Books members gave some advice to someone on this
list for their powerbook battery not reaching full charge, if I
remember correctly they had it replaced.

Just reading the service manual and if the computer charges to 95% or
under, replace the DC board, ie, if anyones battery doesn't get past
95%, send it in for repair.

Just thought you'd all like to know in case anyone else is experiencing
this.

Even if you are fortunate enough to own Acrobat or Acrobat Exchange, a
.pdf file may be protected by the originator so that it cannot be

Using Acrobat Reader 5, you can print to PDF, then import into Acrobat,

This is why Adobe removed Print to PDF in Acrobat 6.

Re: PowerBook 12 Battery

2003-06-06 Thread Matt Peacock
Apple seem to be very polar.

I've had cases where I've been on the phone less than 10 minutes, have
had a full apology, replacements sent out (and sometimes a
complimentary gift), with boxes for sending the offending component
back.

Other times I've had the dreaded It is not a problem, that is normal
or the even worse It falls within the computers specification.

It all depends who you talk to I suppose.

Hi All-

I just wanted to update those who helped me with my

not to Apple, to Microcenter where I purchased it.
They exchanged it with no questions asked. That is
Microcenter's policy but I wonder what would of
happened if I had sent it back to Apple? Would it have
been so painless?? Just a thought...

Re: 12 Speed

2003-06-06 Thread Matt Peacock
Same thoughts here, and we're not alone, many people on both
MacRumors.com and Apple's own discussion boards have commented on this.

Unfortunately putting it on Apple's boards got me a threatening email
saying if I did it again my ISP would be informed and my IP blocked
from registering or posting again.

Everyone seems to agree it is a collection of issues, which could be
solved by:
- Firmware update (to solve the dreadfully slow booting)
- Graphics drivers (current implementation is very, very poor)
- OS Updates (the cynic in me says Apple will put this into 10.3, as an
incentive, imagine a post on Apple's discussion boards saying I just
installed 10.3 on my 12/15/17 PB and WOW! I never knew the machine
could go that fast, every-thing's snappy, my frame-rates in games have
improved no end etc etc)

I suppose all you can do for now is ensure you have the latest updates
from Apple (10.2.6, Bluetooth update, CD firmware update, iMovie 3.0.3,
iSync 1.1, Quicktime 6.3 etc etc)

Re: 12 Speed

2003-06-06 Thread Matt Peacock
Considering you did not read the post Todd, I find it very hard to
accept what you have just said.

I did not cry about censorship, I merely stated the fact that when I
posted about the problem it was deleted and I was sent the posted
email. You have taken my comments out of context and exaggerated them.
I completely understand the need for Apple to preserve a company image,
and I have no intention of running them down, on the contrary I sing
their praises every opportunity I get.

The rules are clear, being a member, and moderator, of many forums, I
know what is and is not acceptable for discussion. I did not start a
complaint, I was completely professional in asking for people's
opinions on the speed, how to improve it, and was it possibly just my
machine with a fault. The fact that Apple got very defensive about this
is out of my hands, however not listening to the consumers is a
self-defeating prophecy, once again I draw your attention to the MDD
fans and the Airport deaths. Apple clearly states the discussion boards
are there for users to post their problems, they have become a massive
part of customer support. After paying $1800 for this machine, and
approximately $10,000 in the last two years on Apple hardware and
software, and being repeatedly told about the forums, I did not see an
issue in posting an OBSERVATION.

Finally apologies to the list nanny, while typing this I received the
request to cease discussion. I understand this has now gone off-topic,
but my original reply to Scott's message was completely on topic, and I
do not appreciate having judgments made abut me from that reply.

The threatening email was really not that threatening at all, they
simply asked you to cease and desist posting of your what I can only
imagine were negative emails on their company discussion boards.
Apple has not said they are going to come break down your doors and
haul you off to jail, they simply stated you would be barred from
posting for a period of time on THEIR servers. I thought that the
email was fairly professional. They have not barred you from posting
emails on other lists (although I am sure those lists also have
rules). Your point about the product may be right on, however your
cries of censorship I believe are a bit off. The rules of those
boards are very clear for anyone who wants to post. I completely
agree with Mr Reeder.

I initially found it a bit disturbing hearing that Apple would not

Apple (as a huge profitable powerful corporation) allow any
discussion to appear on that bulletin board that didn't enhance their
image and contribute to their bottom line? This is definitely not
Russia 1948! In the former USSR a capitalist firm such as Apple
would not be permitted to exist, not permitted to innovate, not
permitted to compete nor would individuals be permitted any
opportunity to criticize an industry. For crying out loud you are
complaining about a corporations right to manage its image. You
don't like it tough. Start your own company. Your freedom of speech
has not be infringed by an agency of the United States government.
Cries of censorship are out of line. You are absolutely free to
discuss/praise/criticize Apple, Microsoft, Ford Motor Company and
Joe's Carryout Store on your own list. Or this list. Or your very
own newspaper or e'zine. Why do you want to abridge Apple's freedom
to operate their business as they see fit? Your right to free
speech and assembly is guaranteed by the United States Consitution
not Apples papers of incorporation. Look, I love my Mac but I have
no illusions about Apple as a corporation. They want to make a
profit, as big a profit as possible. Good for them. I wish them all
the success in the world. Caveat emptor.

Only going up to 76% is NOT normal, call Apple service, they'll either:

a) Send you a new battery and a box to send them your old battery
b) Ask you to send them your laptop and they'll test the battery and
the laptop.

Hope it's fixed soon!

Re: PowerBook 12 Battery

2003-05-29 Thread Matt Peacock
OS X stops charging when it reaches (usually 90-90%), to prevent lots
of rapid discharges and re-charges damaging the battery.

Your iPod is probably drawing charge and affecting this, disconnect the
iPod and see what charge you reach before it stops, if it is still 88%,
phone Apple support.
