open source software site

2006-02-02 Thread Michel Treisman

I'm writing a book on Abiword. I think that's pretty serious work.

That's a very good example. I hope there aren't too many people
pressed

over the tangential direction of this thread, but it seems worthwhile.
Comparing MS Word to AbiWord is like comparing a BMW 750i to a Toyota
Corolla -- both will accomplish the same function (get you there),
but one
is loaded down with several hundred features you will probably
never use,

while the other is much more straight-forward in its approach.

Everyone compares open source word processors with Microsloth Word.
But there are cheaper alternatives too. I have glanced at Pages, and
it doesn't look too bad. What do folks think about Pages? Does it
have any serious gaps, compared to Word? One thing I don't think it
has are macros but perhaps i could live without them.

Setting up Netgear DG834G

2005-12-13 Thread Michel Treisman
Thanks to everybody who gave me suggestions when I had difficulty
emplementing encryption to connect my powerbook with a Netgear router.
The answer was simple (as usual) when I found it: I had not checked
Allow station to broadcast its name (SSID).
When I made the router broadcast its name, I was able to select WPA-
PSK on the router, and WPA Personal on Internet Connect.

And that worked.

Setting up Netgear DG834G problem

2005-12-08 Thread Michel Treisman

I have replaced my Speedtouch router with a Netgear DG834G Wireless
ADSL Firewall Router, in order that I can get online wirelessly with
my PowerBook. And it works. But it works only when the Security
Option I choose is 'Disable'.

The problem seems to be that the Netgear interface, and internet
Connect (Mac OS X 10.4.3) don't seem to offer compatible security
options.

 Netgear offers three options:

WEP (Wired equivalent privacy)

WPA-PSK (Wifi protected access preshared key)

WPA-802.1x

And Internet Connect offers:

WEP Password

WEP 40/128-bit hex

WEP 40/128-bit ASCII

LEAP

WPA Personal

WPA Enterprise

WPA2 Personal

WPA2 Enterprise

802.1x WEP

I wanted to use WPA, which is stronger than WEP, and I tried pairing
up 'WPA-PSK' from Netgear with 'WPA Personal' from Internet Connect,
but the wi-fi connection stops working when I do this.

If I select 'WPA-802.1x' from Netgear, this requires a Radius server
- I have no idea what that is.

Does anyone know what I should be doing to get WPA encryption?

Mike

Re: PCMCIA Card

2005-07-21 Thread Michel Treisman
My Titanium 1GHz powerbook has a slot in the side which I vaguely
believe is supposed to take a PCMCIA card, although the manual that
came with the powerbook says nothing about it.

The PB has USB but not USB 2.0. Maplin have a USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card
(no maker's name given) on promotion. They say For use in PC card
slot Type II, and suitable for Windows 98 SE or higher PCs. They
don't mention the Mac.

Is the slot in my PB a Type II slot? Would it take the PCMCIA card?
If all that worked, I could get a Western Digital External USB 2.0
hard drive which is also on promotion.

Would all this work? Or does the card need a PC only?

Pismo Safari Mail problem

2005-06-07 Thread Michel Treisman

Scott wrote:

Mike,

As routine maintenance? I am just curious, what needs maintenance in OS
X?

I used some of those maintenance programs with Jaguar a couple years
ago and found they did more harm than good. I did not have any problem
in the first place, I just used the programs because I fell for the
sales pitch and didn't know better. Anyway, they messed things up more
than they fixed anything. So I never used them again. I've never had
any problems in OS X. All I've heard and read about OS X is that those
maintenance programs are unnecessary and from my experience that is
true.

So my suggestion is don't even use those programs. OS X is pretty good
at taking care of itself.

Scott

It is good you have not had problems. I have had problems
occasionally. For example, files on my desktop having the wrong label.

When that sort of thing happens, I run Cocktail to clear caches and
repair permissions, and I run DiskWarrior. If it finds the directory is
messed up, I let it replace the directory. That usually helps.

What surprised me about the current problem is that DiskWarrior and the
other programs didn't help. Laurent says it is a file corruption
problem.

Reinstalling the system cured it.

Re: Pismo Safari Mail problem

2005-06-06 Thread Michel Treisman
As routine maintenance for my Pismo POwerbook (Mac OS X 10.3.8) I ran
Applejack and then Diskwarrior 3.0.2.

After that I found that when I booted up, Safari crashed and Mail
crashed.

In each case, there was an error report which said:

Link(dyld) error: Safari truncated or malformed library,
or the same for Mail.

Running cocktail, Disk Utility and Diskwarrior again did not repair
this. In the end I gave up, reformatted the hard disk, and
reinstalled the system from a backup. But now I am unsure whether it
is safe to use Applejack or Diskwarrior again. They have never caused
me trouble before.

Has anyone found any similar sort of problem with either of them?

DiskWarrior problem

Disk Warrior cannot run effectively when launched from a Panther
volume. An
update fro Alsoft is on the way. In the meantime, simply boot from the
Disk
Warrior CD and fix to your heart's content. Frankly, Using DW from the

Mike,
Is your Mac capable of booting into Mac OS 9? Next question... Do you
have a
copy of Disk Warrior prior to Disk Warrior X. I think the version was
2.1.x.

If you can boot into 9 and have the Disk Warrior CD, try running it

there.

Otherwise, I'm stumped. Please let us know how this situations pans

Good luck.

I have received Panther but not yet installed it. I have a LaCie 400FW

So I asked LaCie:

product name: StudioDrive
serial: 754105180297 6774A
purchase date: 2001
interface: Firewire
I am upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). Should I apply
your firmware update in your Updater 6.4.8a to this drive?
their answer was:

Yes please do so from an OS9 machine.
Also backup any important data on the drive prior to this
Wait until you have finished the 10.3 install before you attach the
drive.

Waiting for authentication services

2003-10-01 Thread Michel Treisman

When I try to start up, (TiBook G4, Mac OS X 10.2.6), my laptop seizes
up during startup at waiting for authentication services or else it
freezes waiting for activation services.
the first time I saw this I thought the permissions needed repair. But
I can't repair permissions because I have to boot up first on that
disk. And I can't complete startup. Catch 22.
Running fsck, DiskUtility, DiskWarrior make no difference. All this
happened two weeks ago. So in the end I reinstalled the software from
the CD.
Today it's happening again - waiting for authentication services
when
I try to start up. Does any one know what is going on, and what to do
about it?

Since I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.2 last time this happened, I suppose
the problem must be some non-Apple application I installed. The extra
apps I have run recently are Cocktail and Windowshade. Can one of
them
  cause this sort of problem?

Go into Utilities and run Directory Access. Turn off all the services
you don't use for authentication. In most cases, you can turn off all
but AppleTalk (if you connect to AppleTalk devices) BSD and Rendezvous,
perhaps SMB if you're connecting to a windows system.
In authentication make sure only /netinfo/root shows and it's set to
automatic.
I'll bet it's trying to reach nonexistent authentication servers and
hanging until they time out.

Hi Bruce,
thank you for taking the trouble to answer me.
I can't try what you say at this time because I bit on the bullet and
reinstalled the software.
But it has happened twice now, this problem with starting up, so I
expect it again.

I expect you are right about missing servers, because when I did fsck,
some lines flashed past my eyes which I think
referred to missing kernel servers.

that leaves the questions, Why do they go missing? Twice. Is it some
other software, one of my non-Mac applications,
that is killing them?
And it sometimes freezes saying waiting for application services. So
that would be a different missing server?

Waiting for authentication services

2003-09-30 Thread Michel Treisman

When I try to start up, (TiBook G4, Mac OS X 10.2.6), my laptop seizes
up during startup at waiting for authentication services or else it
freezes waiting for activation services.

the first time I saw this I thought the permissions needed repair. But
I can't repair permissions because I have to boot up first on that
disk. And I can't complete startup. Catch 22.

Running fsck, DiskUtility, DiskWarrior make no difference. All this
happened two weeks ago. So in the end I reinstalled the software from
the CD.

Today it's happening again - waiting for authentication services when
I try to start up. Does any one know what is going on, and what to do
about it?

Since I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.2 last time this happened, I suppose
the problem must be some non-Apple application I installed. The extra
apps I have run recently are Cocktail and Windowshade. Can one of them
 cause this sort of problem?

warranties

2003-07-18 Thread Michel Treisman
Hi!

I have been offered a new and unused Titanium powerbook which the
seller says he recently obtained from an Apple employee at Cupertino.
But there is no proof of purchase with the machine.

Without proof of purchase would I have no warranty, if there is a major
failure of some sort in the first year? I thought one could tell the
age from the serial number. Would that be sufficient for a warranty?

Does anyone know the answers?

Mike

ebay

2003-07-15 Thread Michel Treisman
I wandered onto eBay three weeks ago as a newbie, bought a bargain Ti
powerbook, never saw the goods
and lost all my money. Am I responsible for not knowing how things
worked, or the website for not warning me?

Since then I have found scams on the powerbook list (UK) every day.
They become recognisable. I sent letters off to many of the sellers.

I have about 10 replies which are very similar to the following:

Hello there,
Before any bidding takes place you must know that for the moment I
accept payment only in cash either through wire transfer or direct
pick-up
because I am currently in Germany where me and my partner
supplied capital for the purchase of a bankrupt stores stock. Now we are
trying to sell the remaining stock.
The buy now price would be 1200GBP for the PowerBook G4 17 1GHz DVI
SuperDrive (with all the shipping/handling and
insurance charges included).
The units are brand new still in their original package factory sealed.
They ship with all the accessories provided by the manufacturer and
have 1 year of warranty fully covered in UK by every Apple service
center.
All the manuals and the original documentation are in English.
You will receive your package in 2 working days. I send all my packages
having written on them
display unit, no comercial value or as a gift so you don't have to
pay any additional taxes. (VAT included) Please let me know ASAP if you
are interested and I will allow you to bid or we can arrange a private
deal to save time and money. I have preffered this special type of
auction
because of the multiple problems I've had in the past with non paying
bidders.

Kind regards

Anyone who gets a letter like that, or is asked to pay via Western
Union should be warned.

Why doesn't eBay take responsibility for allowing us to lose $$$ and
£££ day after day? Because an individual bidder doesn't have the muscle
to challenge them. If someone with the right know-how put tobether a
list of 100 or so victims and took eBay to court I think we would have
a chance to get compensation.

Pismo DVD-ROM drive

2003-03-12 Thread Michel Treisman

My Pismo fell off a table and the edge of the DVD ROM drive was ripped
off. The drive itself still works fine but I need a new
plastic case for it. I have not been able to find it as a spare part.
Does anyone know where I could get a new case? Or perhaps a dead DVD
drive to cannibalize?

Re: Pismo problems

2002-07-24 Thread Michel Treisman

Hi.
I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I have a 500 MHz Firewire G3
Powerbook, with the hard drive partitioned, and I usually boot on the
partition (PB X) that has Mac OS X 10.1.5 installed. For several weeks
now, I have had the following problems from time to time. First,
sometimes a white rectangle appears in the middle of the desktop. It is
like a warning window, with the text missing, that overlies everything
else and can't be dismissed. About the size of the warning window that
sometimes tells me that the battery is running low, but the battery can
have plenty of juice when it appears.

Second, Word freezes, I can't move or close documents, and I can't quit
Word (Quit Word in the File menu is greyed out).

Perhaps these problems are separate. I don't know. I have had both today.

If I restarton PB X and do 'sbin/fsck -y' at start-up, it usually says
'PB X is OK'.

If I boot on the partition(PB A) with only Mac OS 9.2.2 and run Disk
First Aid, it is happy.

If I run DiskWarrior to look at PB X, it sometimes tells me that the
boot blocks are damaged. I let it repair the boot blocks, and things are
OK again for 4-5 days.

Does anyone know what is going on? What should I be doing? Do I need to
reformat my hard drive or could it be a software problem?

 Mike

Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X

2002-05-24 Thread Michel Treisman

Amber,
I had this problem too. My solution was to put an alias of Word in the
Startup Items folder. That way, Word is always open before I click on
any Word document, so I can forget about the problem.

Subject: Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X
 From: Amber Rhea [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi all,

I just got a new iBook (500 MHz) the other day, and so far I love it.
However, I have one question. It has OS 9 and OS X installed on the same
partition. I have both Microsoft Office 2001 and Microsoft Office X.
However, by default all my Word files have become associated with
 Office X.
(I did not have Office X on my old computer.) If I double-click a Word
document in OS 9 I get the message To use Microsoft Word your computer
 must
be running MacOS X 10.1 or later. If I open Word first and then open
 the
file from within it, it is fine. I don't boot into OS X very often, and
 when
I do, it is mainly to work on Java programming and nothing else. How
 can I
get the computer to know to use the version of Word that coincides with
 the
OS I am currently using? (Does that make sense?) I assume I would have
 to
use ResEdit, if I can do it at all. Thanks in advance!
