1. I bought 2 new batteries from ebay for my sons' iBooks
for about $75 each, shipping included, and they are holing
around 3-4 hours. I'll dig up the info if you are
interested (my post on this may be in the archive from last
summer). Their regular price on their web site is $99!

2. While you are at it, max the RAM. You'll be glad you
did. :-)

3. Drive speed makes almost as much difference on older G3s
as it does on newer models. If you can afford a 5400 or
higher speed drive, I'd say do it.

4. New drives should be 9.5mm or less in height. Otherwise
any ATA laptop drive should do (but see the drive caveat
over at Other World Computing - I don't recall if their
note includes the clamshell or not).

5. FWIW, you can put some CD-RW drives in a clamshell,
although you'll need to modify the bezel if you want it to
look stock and have the eject button work (not really an
issue if you are running OS X). Otherwise, the stock PC
bezel will fit or can be made to fit with a little
trimming. Just a thought. There's good info at Accelerate
Your Mac (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com) on compatable drives
(hard drives, too!).

6. Getting the top cover back in place, for me, was the
most difficult part (the only difficult part, really). I
think there's still a small gap on the top left on my one
son's iBook. It's tedious, but be patient. It should go
fine.

7. As to drive brand, I've heard praises and gripes about
every brand. I think IBM/Hitachi and Toshiba are the main
laptop drive brands right now.

Good luck.

Clamshell iBook failing to wake from sleep

2005-11-10 Thread Robert Eye
My son's clamshell iBook has developed the annoying
problem of (occasionally) not being able to wake from
sleep.

It is an intermittent problem, probably occurring
about 1/3 to 1/2 the time. He puts the iBook to sleep
(either by using the menu command or just closing the
lid) and it fails to wake the video. You can hear the
HD come up but the screen stays black. Holding down
the power button forces a restart and the iBook boots
normally. He doesn't get the more common problem (from
what I've found on a web search) of the gray screen or
flashing ? on restart.

Here are the machine particulars:

Graphite 366 MHz iBook (no FW)
96 MB RAM
VM off
Mac OS 9.2.2
Airport 2.0.4, turned on
Third-Party Apps he uses:
Claris Works 6.2.8
Netscape 7.0.2

I found several articles by Charles Moore on the
"Sleep of Death" issue on PBs in general, and a few
discussion forums (lots of discussion, but not much in
the way of solutions), but not much else.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Re: [G-Books] bracket thingy

2005-10-19 Thread Robert Eye
I set up a filter to sort by e-mail address in the
To/CC: field (which is the G-Books@mail.maclaunch.com
address in this case). Works fine. Not sure how the
messages come in in Mail or whatever client you are
using. I'm using SBC's web-based reader.

I do sort other lists by the "[ ]" in the Subject:
line. I do the G-Books and LEM Swap List using the
e-mail address.

At least the last 10 or so messages from this list did

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-16 Thread Robert Eye
I just went through this with a technician at my
workplace who received a hand-me-down Lombard. DVD
Player software will not install in a Lombard under OS
X and won't work if you manage to copy it over. Per
Apple:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106470

"Watching DVD discs in Mac OS 9

Other computers with DVD-ROM drives have hardware
decoders, which DVD Player 3.0 does not work with."

and

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=151943

"Mac OS X 10.3 Help

DVD Player is not installed on my computer

DVD Player is installed on computers that have a DVD
drive and support AGP or PCI graphics with a Rage 128
video card or better."

Nor does the DVD-Video PC Card work with the Lombard:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30632

"Note: The DVD-Video PC Card is not supported on the
Powerbook G3 Series 1999 (with Bronze translucent
keyboard)"

All the research I've done says that you can't play
DVD videos on a Lombard under OS X - you have to boot
into OS 9.

I'd love to be proven wrong (as would the tech at
work!).

iBook says "Airport card not installed" when it is

2005-10-01 Thread Robert Eye
I just bought an Airport card for my son's tangerine
iBook. When I try to run the Airport software it say
that an Airport card is not installed.

I know the Airport card is good because I swapped it
out with the one in our graphite iBook and the new
card works fine. I'm using it to post this message.
Trying the old card from the graphite iBook into the
tangerine one gives the same "Airport card not
installed" message.

I tried zapping the PRAM to see if that helped; it
didn't. I also tried reinstalling the card; that
didn't help either.

Am I looking at a bad MB here, or something else?

Both iBooks are running MacOS 9.2.2 and Airport
software 2.0.2.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Pismo Memory Problem

2005-09-28 Thread Robert Eye
I strongly disagree.

IMO, it's a problem with the cache memory on the
Powerlogix CPU card. I've seen this personally on my
iForce card from them on my iMac, and there was a
thread in 2002-2003 on MacInTouch about cache problems
with their upgrade cards (the BlueChip model) - and
problems with warranty support and repairs - for older
Macs. See
http://www.macintouch.com/powerlogixblue.html

This also seem to be an issue with older powerbooks
from the Pismo on down having CPU failures (Apple
cards, too, not just 3rd party) with the cache error
being flagged at startup.

OTOH, I don't recall any major HD issues with my CPU
problem.

If you still have the original Apple card, put it in
and see if the problem returns. I'll bet everything
will be fine, as long as the Apple card was ok before
the upgrade.

(FWIW: It got to the point where my iMac wouldn't even
boot with the cache turned on - they have a software
tool that allows you to turn the cache on and off, or
set the speed. I sent it in under warranty (it was
less than a year old, and had a 3 year warranty) and
they said it tested fine - they said my RAM was bad.
Funny, the RAM worked (and still does to this day) in
my Apple 333 MHz card just fine - running OS X 10.3.9.
So I was stuck with a $400 card still under warranty
that was (and is) useless.)

FWIW (again), I will NEVER buy another Powerlogix
component. Never.

Yes, PC100 and PC133 are fine. PC66 would be pretty
hard to find, new - most places sell PC100 and/or
PC133.

Might be a problem. The more the better. You can add
up to 512MB if you want to spend the $.

The 3GB HD will be limiting, too - just be judicious
with what you install.

Re: Airport range with Pismo (internal vs external)?

2005-09-06 Thread Robert Eye
The (original) Airport card is essentially the same
(internally and performance-wise) as the Lucent PCMCIA
cards, except the pin/antenna configurations are
different. Although I have no direct experience, it
seems from what I have read that the older PBs and the
original iBook have the best range w/Airport cards. I
don't know about a comparison between Airport and
PCMCIA cards.

(IIRC, don't the later versions of the Airport sw
update the encription firmware in the card to 128
bit?)

For the cost (!!) of Airport cards on eBay, though, a
wireless USB may be the better solution. The D-Link
DWL-122 was, I believe, the only officially supported
USB wirless stick for the Mac (the Belkin F5D6050 was
supported, too, but it's not a stick, but a wired unit
with antenna - works great on my original Bondi iMac),
and only had OS X drivers. Some of these are available
on eBay for 1/3 the cost of an Airport card (!). The
successor, the DWL-G122, does NOT have Mac drivers,
and I believe is a different chip set.

Oops, forgot about the USB stick from MacWirless.com
for $100 - they say up front that some people have had
problems with the OS X driver. Check their site:

There are a couple other USB sticks available with
hacked drivers; I'll see if I can dig up more if
you're interested. Ralink Corp has come up with some
OS X drivers for USB wireless parts that use their
chipset:

You might check their forums for info on the brands
supported.

Here's another site for wireless cards/USB sticks with
available driver support under OS X:

I'm exploring the same option for a Tangerine iBook I
just bought off eBay w/o an Airport card (should have
held out for one that had the card). Mac OS 9 support
is *especially* difficult to find for 3rd party USB
sticks. I think the macwireless stick is the only one
with OS 9 support.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX

P.S. If anyone has a good source of Airport cards for
a *reasonable* price, please forward. Thanks.

Re: scrubbing my oldhard drive

2005-09-02 Thread Robert Eye
OS 9 has the ability to write zeros to the disk. Doing
this several times would be sufficient for most cases
of transferring ownership of a computer (or individual
HD) to a new user.

I believe there is an option on Norton Utilities for
pre-X systems that does a secure erasure.

For *all* cases, incineration of the HD is the best
option. :-)

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive ???

2005-08-31 Thread Robert Eye
Go to

http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso

and search the drive compatibility database. Over 100
entries for Combo DVD-CDR (under Select a Mac Model,
use PowerBook G3 2000 Rage128 Mobility). At least one
mention there about the "quality" of the LM drive.

Most all of the entries are for the expansion bay -
having never owned a Pismo, I assume this is the most
common way of integrating this type of drive?

You might try these guys for a replacement drive

http://www.centrix-intl.com/fulllist.asp

I haven't used them and have no financial interest in
them; I found them while looking for a CDRW to put in
my son's new (to him) clamshell iBook (I was planning
on buying one from them, but my son decided he didn't
need/want CDRW capability).

Just because these drives are "obsolete" from a
production standpoint, there's no reason to not use
the drive (new or "pre-owned"). Heck, the Pismo is
"obsolete."

Re: Pismo > Panasonic LCD

2005-08-30 Thread Robert Eye
Sometimes projectors seem to be particular about the
resolution they are trying to project; the laptop and
the projector have to match. We've had some
difficulties at monthly meetings getting the
presenter's personal laptops to connect to our
projector (a Dell labeled projector - not sure if it's
LCD or DLS). All encounters here are with
Windows-based laptops.

I assume your Pismo works with other projectors and
external monitors?

I remember Apple's commercial where a Windows laptop
can't do the job during a presentation, and the
members of the audience are calling out various
suggestions to fix the problem. The last suggestion
was "Get a Macintosh."

Re: batteryrefill.com

2005-08-29 Thread Robert Eye
I had considered them for a battery for the clamshell
366 iBook I just acquired from eBay. I decided to buy
a new (not Apple) battery w/1 year warranty from an
eBay seller for $77 including shipping; the one I
bought turns out to give me at least 4 solid hours of
operation after its first charge.

I hope to hear more about batteryrefill.com. I have
another clamshell on the way for my younger son, and
will likely need a new battery for it. I may just go
ahead and bite the bullet and try them. If I do, I'll
post back. I like the idea of sending in the pack and
having them rebuild it with fresh cells.

CDRW in clamshell iBook - hints and tips, please

2005-08-23 Thread Robert Eye
I recently bought an iBook SE off of eBay that turned
out to have a dead CDROM drive. I was planning on
replacing it with another CDROM drive, until I checked
the drive compatibility feedback at the Accelerate
Your Mac web site. A number of people have
successfully installed a UJDA330 CDRW drive into their
colored iBooks. Needless to say, I like the improved
functionality this could provide.

The only issue that everyone mentioned was having to
do structural surgery on the colored cover plate to
get it to fit the new drive. The issue that not
everyone seemed to agree on was whether or not the
drive was bootable in either/both MacOS 9 or X (either
holding down the C key or
control-option-shift-delete).

I've looked over the instructions at pbfixit.com and
the task doesn't look too daunting. I just need to get
the kids out of the house for a few hours. :-)

So, has anyone on the list done this upgrade? What
insight can you share from your experiences
(especially on the cover plate surgery)?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX

P.S. I know about the CD-RW that Wegener Media sells,
but I'm not interested for that price - plus, it
doesn't use the iBook's cover plate.
