There is a control panel for just that ... you aren't real familiar with Classic Mac OS either are you? Oh and Classic Mac OS after System 7 will respect file extensions if you ask it to. I've already used that control panel, and set all extensions for text based documents to MS Word. It ignored it. As for Flash, if you install Flash player and read the dialog boxes for the installer there is one that states: memory should be increased for your browser, do you want that done at this time? I don't see clicking yes as manually increasing the memory. Clicking is a manual action. And even Linux dynamically allocates memory. It's obviously a bad sign when the Mac needs more configuration than Linux does. Only used it a couple hours, eh? Good luck to you with that. Way to make unsubstantiated comments. Uhm, that is all well and great for viruses that are e-mailed, but the worst and the newest for the past year have all been self-propagating, they don't use e-mail ... I know that is a hard thing to grasp, but seriously, slammer, not an e-mail virus, there have been a couple before and after slammer, in fact there was a new one out this past week. I didn't say I don't use a Firewall, but then again, Mac users use them too. Anyone who says, I know enough ... always makes me smile. I never have to worry about them knowing more than me. Its good to be unsatisfied. As long as you're happy in your little world. You don't have a lot of depth here. The PowerBook G4 Ti was declared the best available laptop by PC World, PC Mag, Business Week, and Business 2.0 when it came out. The PowerBook 12 and 17 models were regarded as being in the top two contenders for high end laptops. That was then, this is now. The Wallstreet was the best when it came out. It certainly isn't now. One thing is for sure though, I would pick a Pismo over a Powerbook G4 any day. You get what you pay for. You are in school, eh? University of something or other you said? College, good, time to learn something. You can buy a cheap car and customize it, or cheap computer components. Depending on if you like analogies or not. However, you can't match the feature set of a pro level Mac with a home built PC at the same price point. You can justify it by writing off features you say you don't need or aren't important, but you can't build something with feature parity so the argument is moot. Are you just blowing hot air or are you willing to back that up? Give me the specs of a specific Mac and I'll show you a PC that does the same job. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... It doesn't mean all of them will break So you're saying that Apple should forget about cutting-edge designs and just build generic boxes like Gateway, eMachine, and Dell? Heaven forbid! Or a design similar to the PowerMac G4. If that was the case, I would still be using Microshaft's crap! It took me a few years, but I finally got my head out of my rear long enough to find out that there were alternatives that were better. It's obviously only a problem for 3% of the computer using population. I have too. I started with DOS, went thru Winblows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, and finally Win2k. I tried Linux, and BeOS, but guess were I wound up? Yep, OS X. I'm glad you found something you liked. But I found Win 98 to have better functionality than every Mac OS until Panther. Winblows easy to use and hassle free?! Don't make me laugh! I've gotten BSOD's with Win2k, and it's supposed to be virtually crash-proof! Yeah. Right... And I've only had one BSOD with Win Me, and Mac OS X crashed on me on several occasions and OS 9 crashes 2-3 times a week consistently and up to several times a day. Life has been so much better since I've been running OS X and Macs, than it ever was when I was using PC's. It's so nice to be able to simply use my computer and not have to constantly dick around with it just to keep it operating. That's how I feel too. But it's the other way around. I don't like the fact that I don't have as much control over my Mac as I do my PC. My lone PC running Win2k still resets itself for no discernible reason whenever it feels like it. And It's been scanned on numerous occasions for viruses, as well as any other hardware/software problems to no avail. My OS X machines will run for weeks with ever having an OS crash or needing to be re-booted. Easy and hassle-free? You bet! My Wallstreet does that too. Go figure. At least we don't have to worry about every virus scare that comes along, as well as the Security Update de-jour. I don't use Anti-Virus software and I've never gotten a Virus. I'm just have my wits about me enough not to get the viruses. Like Apple is the only computer company that has occasional hardware problems? Yeah, right. Not!! Why do you think companies like Dell and Gateway have so many people in tech support? But I can build my own PCs that don't have problems. I can't do that with Macs. I can also order them from companies like Falcon Northwest and Voodoo PC that put most other computer manufacturers to shame in terms of quality and support. That's choice and quality available in the PC world that can never be had with a Mac. It sure isn't because they build such high quality machines! Believe me, I wouldn't trade any of my Macs for the most high-end new Dell, Gateway, HP, or any other PC, any time, any way. I would agree on Dell, Gateway and HP. But I'd rather build my own system and have control over the components that go into it instead of letting Apple do it. What it boils down to is the fact that the average PC user has been brainwashed to believe that mediocrity is the status quo, so they don't expect anything better. That seems to be more Mac users being brainwashed. I used to be one of the brainwashed ones, but I know better now. However, the average Mac user expects much more. So when Apple does happen to drop the ball, the lynch mob forms up. If it were Dell, nobody would give it a second thought... People still complain, there's just no lynch mob. But that's just my opinion, and all I'll say on this topic. Oh, and for the record, I have an 700 Mhz iBook with a serial number in the range in question.. Then I guess you're the one who's learned to put up with mediocrity. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... You're working under the false assumption that I was trying to back up my previous comment. This, however is: Regardless, I don't see how putting the blame on a 3rd party because apple didn't make it has any point. Apple is responsible for the business partners they chose. Regardless, I wouldn't want a new Mac, I'd want an old one that has been proven to be reliable. The system worked without it but it had to be sent in to an AARS to be fixed. If the design had been similar to most desktop PCs or Power Macs the drive could have been taken out and sent in to be replaced instead of the whole computer. I ask because many Mac users like to complain and whine, thing is, I don't believe that many of us realize how much better we have it. That's because it really isn't any better. That's just a myth. I run Linux, Classic Mac OS, Windows, and Mac OS X. I have to at one time or another, along with DOS and BeOS. Linux lacks the refinement most of us are accustomed to. That's true, but people who use Linux aren't looking for refinement. They want an extreme level of control over their system that isn't possible with any other OS without a lot more work. Although I wonder why Linux came up here in a hardware discussion... Windows lacks the ease of use and the lack of hassle we are used to. I find Windows to be just as easy to use and even more Hassle-free than my Mac. My Windows Me system has crashed once in all the time I've had it. My Wallstreet running 9.2.2 crashes 2-3 times per week because it doesn't sleep properly and won't let me eject my 802.11b card. And in our happy little world, many of us just forget. I wouldn't call it a happy little world. I just had a call to fix an old lady's iMac. It was a minor issue, but it certainly proved that the Mac OS wasn't any easier or more intuitive to use than Windows. Makes it easier to complain. We do things like decide that design flaws exist on the basis that we had a bad experience of we read about it on the web, or someone I knew once told me ... When many people have the same problem then there most certainly is a design flaw. If only a couple people have a problem then it's just bad luck. Considering the number of people complaining about the same problem (logic board failure) it's reasonable to call it a design flaw. Thing is, you call it a design flaw, when I called you on such a determination in your last post you then moved to saying it was an issue because a lay person understood it to be. I'm not sure where you put those two ideas together. I still maintain it was a design flaw, and the Extension Program supports this. Regarding it being an issue had to do with Apple being dishonest about the issue. Which by definition is a PR thing not a design thing. You call it a design flaw based on ... what? Your last post said you didn't have experience in the things it would take to determine information, yet you say again here that you determined there was a design flaw. Sounds fishy. Me and 2000 other people. You can go ahead and call each one of them out on the issue if you like. Second hand has its own issues. At least in my experience there is something to be said about warrantees. With second hand if you know the person you know you're getting a system with good build quality. You don't know that with a new system. I believe Dan Knight (might have been someone else) said he liked buying refurbished systems because Apple has gone over them with a fine-toothed comb so he can be sure that the system works. I fully agree with him on this issue. And refurbished systems still have the full warrantee too. I don't tend to use much in the way of warrantees because I am a to it yourself'er, I have a bit of formal training, working on some more, and have been working in the tech support industry for several years now. I figure I have more time than money. But warrantees are a good thing. And no one is giving me a warrantee on the 4-8 year old hardware I have around in my workshop. Yes, but it's unlikely that you would need one either. Old Apple hardware was actually built to last. There's a reason they have a reputation for quality, and it seems to me that the iBook issue is just one of many with which they are slowly losing that reputation. I'd feel comfortable buying an old Mac, but I'd be very wary of plunking my hard earned cash down for a new one. Couple other notes, large number of people is relative. Also, consider that similar symptoms may not be caused by the same root cause. That doesn't mean that there isn't a problem. Lastly, logically Apple would not save themselves much money or time by excluding the minority [in comparison to the total 860,000 iBooks sold during the affected years, the couple months on each end that Apple does not claim are included is pretty minor]. Therefore its only logical to conclude that Apple narrowed down the cause as accurately as they could and is not excluding the large number of

Apricorn EZ USB 2.0 on Wallstreet with USB Overdrive
I'm looking for a USB 2 PCMCIA card with a dongle. It has to be with a dongle because I need to be able to use it at the same time as my Wi-Fi card and most USB 2 cards would prevent that. Re: iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program
I agree with you somewhat. What they should have done is admit that they knew there was a problem right off the bat and said they were investigating it. Instead they blatantly lied to at least 1889 customers (that was the latest number of signatures on the pending class action suit against Apple regarding the logic board problem). Honesty goes a long way to making customers feel like dealing with a company. Apple has already been dishonest with their customers and despite this repair program, they're still going to lose some customers, and discourage some potential customers. They certainly lost my mom, out of 3 computers she's had, all of them were apples and two of them were lemons. A Performa 5200 and her iBook 600 (which isn't covered by the program because it's manufactured before May 2002). The one which worked for her was a used LC 575 which still works but we got it from her brother for whom it was working fine at the time. My brother got an iMac Rev B and it works, but the CD drive had to be replaced twice. 2 out of 3 is a very bad number for computers that didn't work. Lying to customers doesn't make her feel any better about Apple. I'm not saying Apple doesn't make good products, the WallStreet I'm on right now has been well used for 5 years by my Uncle before he gave it to me, and it's replaced my desktop PC (well it will once I get an external hard drive enclosure). But I'm also not likely to buy from Apple again unless the product has been out for a long time without issues, and the $300 for Applecare which seems to be more of a necessity than an option these days doesn't sweeten the deal when many PC manufacturers have 3 year warranties that cover everything that Applecare does except for free. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm sure some people will be perfectly happy with the way Apple dealt with the problem. I would have been if they had been honest, but 2 out of 5 macs in my immediate family going bad doesn't make me feel like being a repeat customer even if they had admitted the problem from the start. Re: The fun I've been having
How are you overclocking? Are you just increasing the CPU speed or are you increasing the bus speed? Both can have problems, but they're especially likely if you're increasing the bus speed. You'll put everything else out of whack. I would suggest at least while you're installing Panther that you return the system to normal settings. You should be able to overclock after you're finished installing as the installation process is usually more picky about stability issues than anything else. The other thing might be your hard drive, but I don't know enough specifics to be able to suggest anything regarding that. On 1/28/04 9:08 AM, Dave Bonhoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi folks! I'm posting this to 2 different lists in the hopes of hitting a bigger knowledge base. Please forgive me, I'm at the limit of my patience. The move to Panther has been an ugly one for me, and continues to frustrate me. Let me start with the machine and then the problems I've been having and what I've tried over the past weeks. 1999 Bronze keyboard PowerBook, aka Lombard. 333MHz overclocked to 433MHz, 512 MB of Kingston RAM (2x256MB), 40 GB Toshiba MK4019GAX hard drive. Runs hot, but the fan never comes on. A bit slow but very stable under Jaguar. I hear lots of praise for Panther on slower machines, so I decide to go for it. I attempt to archive and install, but about 80% through the first CD the screen goes weird and it has crashed... I had backed-up my user folder to another machine using Synk, so I'm not too upset. I reboot and try again with the same results. I try doing just the upgrade and again it crashes. I zap pram, reset NVRAM, everything that I can think of, even formatting the drive. I swap RAM with my wife's Wallstreet, no help. Finally, I pull the RAM chip out of the top slot and try just 256 MB. It worked! I begin applying software updates that I had previously downloaded. After upgrading to X.3.1, I can no longer mount dmg's. I wipe the drive and reinstall, but again, X.3.1 refuses to mount dmg's. I wipe the drive yet again and reinstall going straight to X.3.2. This is better! I try the open source wireless driver that I used in Jaguar, but it doesn't work in Panther. I try the IOXperts driver and it works much better, even supporting Appletalk! But less than 4 hours after registering the driver to my card, the card starts acting up and now only works sporadically. But that is a different issue... I try importing my user folder that I had backed up previously. I put everything where it is supposed to go and repair permissions. Most everything looks good. I reinstall most of the essential apps I need immediately. Mail is a PITA. I can check for mail, but nothing is arriving in my inbox. I know that this is wrong. I change permissions on every mailbox manually and things get better. Some mailboxes have to have their contents copied to a new mailbox and be deleted because they refuse to play nice. And web mail sucks as that is what I was using during this circus act. At this point, I've got 4 full days invested into this 'upgrade' and I still have lots of work ahead of me to get back to where I was. Little things like preferences, locations (I had over 20 different dial-up locations that I use, never mind different private networks with proxy servers, WAP's and such, my head hurts thinking about it...), and I'm still trying to install software, all the while using the machine to earn a pay cheque. After a few days, I reinstall my top 256MB RAM chip and everything appears well, at first. Then I get a weird display crash (like during the install). It is random and different each time. Sometimes it is a dark grey grid pattern, sometimes different coloured vertical bands, sometimes the display dissolves from the center out into psychedelic patterns, sometimes a horizontal line of black pixels slowly marches down the screen leaving an interesting pattern behind. Repairing permissions will generate this problem every time it is run. I thought that heat may be the problem, so I have left the keyboard open and a desk fan blowing onto the heat sink and it is cool to the touch rather than the normal 'very hot'. It still crashes. I try with Activity monitor open and watch as my installed RAM varies from 512 down to 510 and back again. I observe free RAM gradually disappear until there is 10 or so MB free, then it crashes. This is repeated a few times to verify. I pull the RAM from both slots and apply a contact enhancer (that has all kinds of approvals including NATO) to both chips and the processor card connector. Now when I repair permissions, my total RAM doesn't drop below 511 MB, and while my free RAM gets very low, 15 - 20 MB, the machine does not crash. I've repaired permissions twice now, without the fan and the keyboard is closed. I still don't know why the internal cooling fan isn't coming on.
Re: G5 Laptops on the way? No big deal!
There's nothing stopping them from designing a new northbridge, or even building it into the CPU like the A64. The problem lies in the fact that at best you get 60% extra performance for each extra CPU. So 4 CPUs would give at best 220% of the performance of a single CPU. Not really worth it considering the extra power. Something else that's interesting to note about the G4s is that somewhere around the 867MHz mark Motorola decided to trade clockspeed for efficiency. So apple was finally able to break the 1GHz mark but there wasn't a significant performance gain. (Which is what Intel has been doing with the P4 for a long time). So that brings the extra performance out of the speed increase even lower. What the G5 seems to be is a new architecture that supports higher clock speeds more than anything else. Of course that is a good thing, as higher clock speeds means better performance, but I think an Alpha-like focus on efficiency would be preferable. 64-bit doesn't offer much of an advantage either, as it's been demonstrated that it is slightly slower than 32-bit anyway (but not by a significant margin). Interesting point. I know the G4 hardly outperformed the G3 at the same clock speed unless the software was specifically written to take advantage of the G4 AltiVec engine. I remember 'back in the day' when we considered that a 68040 at 50MHz was roughly twice as powerful as a same-speed 68030. The PPC 603e chip in my Powerbook 1400 was supposedly about twice as powerful as a same-speed '040. G3's were not quite a doubling of the 603's. If we're going to get G5's in laptops, then I would like to know how feasible my video project has become. If we're going in multiples of 2 for each generation, from a G3 thru G4 to G5, then for a single G5: [24min * 500MHz]/[2 * 2 * 1600MHz] = 1.8 minutes. For a dual 2 GHz, we should be down to about 1:1 parity for compressing MPEG-2. That would be close to acceptable to me--even if it is a lot of weekends. How close am I? iBook as External Hard Drive
My mother has a 600MHz 14 iBook and it is suffering from the now infamous logic board failure problem. So far she has had the following go wrong, DVDs won't play, CDs won't mount 2/3 of the time, she can't burn CDs with it, the Ethernet port is dead and as of yesterday she can no longer use her Imation Super Disk drive with it. The screen intermittently freezes and goes dead on her. She no longer has dial-up internet access, so there would be no way to get the important information off the hard drive that way, assuming the modem port still worked. It doesn't have AirPort installed, so it can't be beamed to my brother's Centrino Laptop. The only way that I can think of right now to get everything off is to set the iBook up as an external hard drive so that the info can be copied off from either my father's iMac Rev B or my brother's Dell Latitude D800. The iMac would be the first option as Mac-Mac always works better than Mac-PC, but if the USB ports don't work, then 1394 with the Latitude is the only remaining option. How would she go about setting her iBook up as an external HD? I live in a different city from her, so the easier the instructions are the better so that something doesn't get lost in conveying the instructions to her. Also, if there are any other suggestions you might have for getting the data copied off before it goes completely dead? I don't have a Pismo or a Mini iPod so I can't say for sure, but it seems to me that most USB 2 hardware is USB 1.1 compatible, although it's much slower running on USB 1.1. Re: Personal LaserWriter LS on WallStreet
OK, I tried the LW 8 extension, it practically nerfed my system, so I rebooted with all extensions on and trimmed away the ones that I was sure I didn't need. I now have a LaserWriter 300 Icon on my desktop, but I'm still getting the same error message when I try to print. I imagine their prices reflect that (now outdated) economic. Since nowadays one could buy an entire Lombard w/CD drive, plus a replacement DVD/CD-RW combo drive mechanism for roughly similar money I can't see anyone selling too many at that price level. Re: Binatone card in lieu of Airport
I can't be sure, but the WL part of the number suggests it's a rebaged lucent wavelan. Silver and Gold should work fine but if it's bonze I think you might have troubles. Ideally you should be able to use your AirPort driver, that's what I'm doing right now with a Lucent WaveLan Silver card. G-Books [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Because my Airport card connection seems faulty, I've been on the lookout for a PC card substitute for my Pismo. Saw a card in a sale at Maplin's for only £12 and bought it on the off chance that it might be a badged card that would work in the Mac. It's a Binatone WL1000 and it has a little green light that suggests that it is picking up the Airport signal. But the connection isn't recognised. The software is PC-only. Does anyone know of software that will make this card work? TiA TONY -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
