Candlelit iBook Screen

2006-02-04 Thread Ruffin Bailey
Has anyone had a problem with their screen flickering like there's a
candle behind it? It's just annoying enough to bother me when I use
my iBook and just disconcerting enough I wonder if it isn't a sign
the screen's dying...

I've had some real issues with NVu, though overall I'll admit I like
it. The indentation functions have some real issues and occasionally
I've had trouble with it "remembering" styles (an added bold, etc)
after I've turned them off several times, which requires a trip into
the "Source" pane for some first aid. The interface leaves a little
to be desired, as there aren't keyboard shortcuts for many of the
buttons on the menu bar, which slows me down considerably. Nor does
it seem to find linked stylesheets in its WYSIWYG window.

I've also noticed that the html code, though very lean and easy to
hack by hand after you're done, does tend to leave in quite a few
"appendix" tags after editing, like spans without anything between
the tags, etc.

This is all with the version from 20050624.

In any event, for light "word processing on the web", it's really
stellar. Spellcheck is great to have and it does a super job of
WYSIWYGing aside from linked css. And thank freakin' heavens for the
lack of html bloat, the span issues aside. It's an html designer's
dream if they have to accept formatted text from other members of
their company. Now, instead of having to recut something from Word,
you get them to download NVu to edit and work from that very easy to
modify base.

Interestingly for me, Seamonkey 1.0 is out now and has Composer in
it. I wonder which set of Composer code is more stable?

Interchanging iBook G3 & G4 keyboards

2006-01-15 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I'm afraid I've mostly lurked on this list for a while and I
apologize if the subject has been covered before, but just in case
it's helpful... I certainly didn't find anyone who seemed to have
done the deed when I Googled this up a few times over the last year.

Short answers:

* You *cannot* use iBook G4 keyboards on iBook G3s without putting an
extension on the ribbon, which, if you don't mind, we'll say is a
nontrivial exercise, to put it mildly.

* You *can* use G3 keyboards on G4 with a few caveats. One, you'll
have to fold the ribbon like a "Z" over on itself, which is not the
recommended way of using a ribbon cable. Two, you'll have a slight
bow in the keyboard that'll make it poke up just enough you'll likely
scrape the screen with your keyboard's keys.

I had a G4 keyboard go flakey on me (never liked it as much as the
iBook G3 keyboard, and it finally acted so wacky I either had to
clean it #shudder!# or use it as an excuse for this experiment) and,
after pulling another keyboard from a limping iBook G3, the things
looked similar enough I thought it was worth a shot. So far, so
good. The bent-over ribbon does concern me a bit, however.

The iBook G4 keyboard doesn't have a particularly nice feel, imo,
though the metal keyholders do seem a bit more robust. I've had
issues on my G4 kybd with the space bar not being so responsive and
with random keys repeating at the slightest pressure (particularly
"h", fwiw). Taking a little out of a G3 keyboard's ribbon would seem
a nice way to get a good typing-feel into this very nice laptop. I'd
considered downgrading to an iBook G3 900 to get as much perf as I
could with the nicer keyboard, esp since Small Dog had told me that I
couldn't swap in a G3 kybd for the G4. Glad I found out differently,
so far. I'm not so sure they were wrong -- the keyboards *aren't*
interchangeable. But, again, you can take the G3's to the G4.

Anyhow, there you go. Hope that helps someone at some point.

iBook keyboards

2005-11-19 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I've got an iBook 500 and an iBook G4 1.2 GHz. The keyboard on the
500 has a great feel, but the Airport on that 'book has given up the
ghost (doesn't appear to be the card) and the OS occasionally locks.
The G4 'book is a super machine, especially snappy with 1.25 gigs of
RAM, but the keyboard, well, stinks.

An Apple Genius told me that I can't swap keyboards between the two
and that the pins aren't the same. Dang. I'm thinking about
unloading both and grabbing the latest version that shares the
wonderful 500-style keyboard -- and saving some dough to buy an
IntelBook as soon as it seems pretty stable.

Anybody know what that latest version of the G3 iBook would be with
the particularly good keyboard?

Thanks!

Not exactly sure what you mean by "client server"; do you just mean their
client? On Mac, you should be pretty safe, I'd imagine, though I haven't
used their software. If quality is your question, Adium seems to do right
well.

Reminds me a bit of the SNL skit were there was a business that only changed
money. They went through a whole slew of, "Give us four quarters, you can
have 20 nickels" sort of deal. The punch line was something like, "How do
we make money? One word: Volume."

Well, volume I suppose really does pay in spamming. How much, even
including the cost of time, could it cost to send out a few million emails
once you've got your act down? Reminds me of another SNL skit where Eddie
Murphy has a Mr. T (?) doll and makes him say to Barbie or the like, "Hey
woman, let me kiss you!" The punchline this time was something like, "90%
of the time I get slapped. But, whoa, the other 10%..." If you're sending
out 100,000 spams and one hundredth of a percent responds... Well, you've
got 10 suckers.

And, well, who doesn't want a great head of hair #and# a doctorate degree
for $40?

(And, fwiw, it's awfully easy to write programs that send spam mail. Find
an open relay and knock yourself out. I think I have enough spam addresses
simply from other listed recepients of the spam I get to make some real
money!)

can't open can't open can't open

2005-07-10 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I recently tried to upgrade my Beige G3's hard drive, and now can't boot.
Anyone seen a firmware message "can't open can't open can't open" (or some
such; using the monitor for something else now) and have any pointers on how
to fix it? That's all I get now. Have reverted back to the old hard drive
and have had one successful boot in about 15 attempts. Can get it to boot
to CD. Am thinking of swapping IDE cables between CD drive and HD, but
thought I'd check with the list.

Thanks!

There really is little better [in 0&1-land, at least] than getting
printserving up and running thanks for GIMP print and friends. I've been
driving myself batty doing it, as my inkjet is one of the very few not
supported by Gimp Print (a Lexmark Z22; don't buy if you want to print from
Windows, ever!) and, as soon as my unmothballed ImageWriter was up and
running, my Beige G3 bit it.

Congrats. It is a neat accomplishment.

Okay, come on folks, I'm upset nobody has performed the required, "Love some
free software and try ImageMagick" line. It's not particularly idiot
friendly, which was requested, I believe, but is free and pretty easy to set
up with batches.

I realize GraphicConverter is likely a much better fit, but as someone who
has Linux installed on one of his iBooks (ImageMagick works on OS X as
well), I felt it my duty to fill in the gap. GUIs iz overrated, y'all. ;^)

Hrm, wonder if The Gimp is easy to batch with; that I haven't ever tried.

One quick reason that comes to mind is if the one that comes with 10.4.1
works. No, seriously. Don't mess with stock if stock is working.

Other than that (and perhaps Mark Twain's "to live 10 more years" excuse for

Give ControllerMate a shot (http://www.orderedbytes.com/controllermate/).
It might be a little on the processor intensive side at times, but depending
on what you're playing, might let you use the iShock without a problem. The
author is awfully responsive if you find bugs, and added support for my

I've heard good things about TransIntl.com. Mike Breeden of xlr8yourmac.com
fame used to work there (iirc) and still has them as a major advertiser. I've
order most of my Macs' RAM from them over the years, though did grab some for
my Beige from OWC with my power supply order this week.

TransIntl ain't necessarily the cheapest, but so far so good.

Well, I managed to crimp my newer power adapter badly enough I'm scared to use
it, but when going back to OWC to order a new one ran across this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/MadsonLine/APPGEN/

I'm not sure that'd be easy to mess with, but it's got to be getting closer.
Still, at $20, why not get a new adpater?!

Strangely, the part that broke here is the AC cord, so to speak. I have to
push the wire into the attachment into the hockey puck and it'll work for a
little while (until it gets bumped or jarred). With all this talk about new
cords, I suppose I should see if Radio Shack has anything to replace just that
cord.

I've also finally figured out (duh) that the iBook 500 can use the iBook G4
adpater, which is a decent temporary fix. There, however, my plug on the end
of the DC cord bent out of shape once when the iBook got moved suddenly. Was
considering taking the pliers to it, but in any event, it's a little screwy and
I'll agree a replacable cord would be A Good Thing.

Thanks everyone,

Replacement power adapter recommendations?

2005-06-07 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I'm looking at replacing a dying iBook G3 dual USB's power adpater and wondered
if anyone had any recommendations. Macsales.com has a number of models, and I
suppose I'm specifically looking for any reasons not to get the cheapest
they've got:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/ACADPTG4/

Macally, a name I've at least heard of, has one there for $40, but it's only 40
Watts and even has a message in the description that it'll be a slow charger:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/MacAlly/PSAC4/

Still, there's something to be said for knowing who is making your product, I
suppose, which is part of the reason I'd rather not go to eBay (I've gotten
some questionable stuff from there -- and some great deals, of course!).

The iAdapter 2 looks the nicest, but at $55, likely way too much for me to fork
out if I've got a good $35 option.

Anyhow, anyone have any experience with these, on an iBook or another model?

Thanks,

Ruffin Bailey

Looks like this is not common knowledge, so here's the link:

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

This enables monitor spanning on an iBook (do check the commpatbility list; 8
meg video cards don't work) with a larger resolution on your external display.

I'm using it (as I've spammed already) on my iBook G4 daily. It really makes
the iBook a great buy. I'm just annoyed that 8 meg VRAM'd iBooks can't run the
hack, so my iBook 500 is stuck mirroring.

Use at your own risk, etc. ;^)

There is the firmware hack to enable video spanning on the iBook -- I use it
daily. It's very nice. The delta grows smaller... So I think we're back to
[attached] screen resolution and extra RAM, give or take. For line in, I only
need to grab DV, and that's a Firewire thing. I'm not sure why else I'd be
trying to get video *into* the 'book. ??

Anyhow, the iBook is a great buy, flexing excepted.

It'd be interesting to pinpoint the revision that made the change, but my iBook
G4 (1.2) is not nearly as robust as my iBook G3 (500). Was a little surprised
I didn't see anybody responding to my "Road Apple" post, but seriously, I've
had two G4 iBooks bend/warp, and it's easy to bend them back. My G3 has never
done this.

The case on the G3 is nice, and though I'm not sure the target user was quite
10 years old (it's a college thing, I think), the iBook is a tough book
overall. Personally, I can't see a single reason now to grab a Powerbook
unless you need more real estate on your screen or more than 1 1/4 gigs of RAM.
Those are the only places (other than robustness, but apparently the Powerbook
doesn't buy you that either) the Powerbook seems to have a deal-breaking trump
card to play.

(Okay, I realize somebody's going to lay into me for overlooking more VRAM in
the PB, etc, but seriously, aside from graphics designers (admittedly a very
important niche), who needs it? If you're playing games, you need to be
spending that dough at Alienware or on an Xbox 360. The PC Card slot in the
larger Powerbooks is also nice, and I believe the hard drive is still much
easier to upgrade (??), an iBook weakness (ask me; I upgraded the hd in my G3
500. Oy vey). That's about all I can figure for repsonses, though, and they
don't quite make up the difference in $$$. Need the mobile, top-notch LCD?
Two gigs of RAM? Buy a Powerbook. Otherwise, grab an iBook.)

Re: LCD vs. CRT

2005-05-28 Thread Ruffin Bailey
> I agree with Dan. CRT monitors still have many uses.

They certainly are the last component you'll need (note that I didn't say
"want") to upgrade on your computer, which means two things to me:

1.) Don't scrimp on your monitor. If you want high resolution and a small
footprint (LCD), pay for it now rather than pay again for it later.
2.) There's rarely a time I give my monitors away. Now I am a PC horder, and
all the junk in my office would be more than the average person could handle,
but just a few weeks ago I busted out the monitor for my LC (that's right, a 15
year-old monitor) to hook up to a Beige G3 I bought to be my network's print
server.

Re: Response on CRT for games over LCDs -- that issue really's not so bad, imo,
now. I play World of Warcraft on my iBook G4 all the time without any ghosting
like I might have seen years ago, and even Quake does pretty well. Try before
you buy, but don't not try an LCD because you like games! Heck, Alienware and
Dell both have gamer laptops out now; those LCDs must not be scaring off too
many buyers.

Re: Praise for Dual-USB IBOOK

2005-05-26 Thread Ruffin Bailey

> unseats, horrible hinge design constantly slicing ground, power and video
> cables inside, cheap keyboard prone to breaking keys, and on and on. I know
> the sycophants will flame me but...whatever.

I was planning on eBaying my 500 G3 iBook for quite some time and have even
replaced it with a 1.2 G4 iBook with 1.25 gigs of RAM, but can't find it in me
to get rid of the beast. The 500 really is a great machine in many ways, runs
Tiger almost acceptably (if you use Safari and not Firefox or the like), and is
superior to my G4 iBook in two ways:

1.) Awfully easy to display Powerpoints/presentations on TV. One A/V cord and
you're rolling.
2.) Doesn't bend. Had to trade in my first G4 iBook because it became bent
just lugging it in my laptop case around campus. Warped so that it wouldn't
sit straight and then started locking up. Nice. I'm overly careful with its
replacement, but it bends like putty if you're not careful too.

At the same time, I've considered pitching the 500 to LEM as a Road Apple.
Why? The main gripe is that Road Apples are supposed to be examples of
machines hobbled with no good reason for the hobbling -- like the ADB-less
Powerbook 150 that's otherwise a good machine. The first few iBook dual USBs
can't, even with the firmware hack, span monitors. Makes the iBook a true
roadie-only. My G4 right now is putting out 1280x1024 on an external and
1024x768 on its on screen. *Very* nice. 1024x768 is great for an entry-level
'book, but isn't enough real estate to make me as productive as I could be when
in the office.

There really isn't any reason any iBook shouldn't be displaying on two
monitors, or at least allowing for a larger "virtual desktop" and higher
resolutions on externals if mirroring. This would make the iBook a real
desktop replacement.

The fact that 500s can't do it even with a hack drives me crazy. Add to that
that the 500 really isn't *quite* fast enough to run OS X and sure as heck
ain't doing iMovie and iDVD worth much and, well, I think you have a decent
Road Apple case. (Yes, I realize Apple is trying to sell Powerbooks, etc, but
the hobbling is what drives me mad.)

/rant
