Actually I've perceived the next OSX upgrade as a becoming more of a hardbody than a bloated upgraded. I look forward to it for my 500MHz iBook which has only a quarter of the backside cache your machine sports. Even with the recent addition of 512MB RAM for it (I swapped out a 128MB) it still doesn't feel as fast as when it ran OS9.2.2. While Apple has added more features to each upgrade of OSX, they have also continued fine tuning and streamlining it. OSX.1 compared to the first release of OSX is significantly faster and more reliable. I'm sure it has been no easy task to take a UNIX operating system and give it the look and feel of a Macintosh, which is why there were a number of basic, familiar functions missing in it's initial release (windowshades, spring loaded folder etc.). While some of these basics don't seem that significant, I'm been surprised at the number of times I've double-click-held a folder in an attempt to drill down, only to remember that the function is missing. Oddly, my biggest pet peeve is that command-N now invokes a new window in the Finder rather than make a new folder. Why? WHY!? For what I currently do with the computer (usual email, web browsing, word processing, and digital photo editing), the iMac is actually almost sufficient except for it's small amount of RAM. The photo editing is a bit slow, but I'm not working with huge files so it's usable. So that makes me lean towards the iBook. If you're going to be toting this around a lot, go for the iBook 12 or 14. It is sturdier and will hold up longer. Apple built it with the educational market in mind. The TiBook just isn't built for the rigors of daily transportation and the abuse I would imagine it would experience in a backpack at school. Then spring for AppleCare. Get AppleCare. Did I mention AppleCare. It's well worth the investment. Especially if you are going to try and squeeze out 3-4 years of use out of it. When the battery craps out in 2.5 years, you'll get another for free. If you have questions about OS 10/11/12 in 2 years, 10 months, it's a free call. If the screen goes dim...well, you get the idea. Not only that, since the iBook keyboard extends to within 5mm of the left and right edge, there are also scuffs becoming visible on the plastic bezel surrounding the LCD screen. The matte finish of the bezel is becoming shiny where the edges of the keys make contact with it. The problem for me is getting into the habit of laying my protective screen saver over the keyboard prior to closing the lid. It spends 90% of the time laying on the desk where I forgot it. Since my iBook takes a daily trip to and from work, it spends a lot of time squeezed inside my computer bag which is already overstuff with a lot of other crap applying pressure to the poor thing. Re: Ibooks running with lids closed
JustinLee on 5/22/02 9:49 PM wrote: Does anyone know if there's a hack (shareware or freeware) that allows you to connect the new iBooks to an external monitor and run them with the lid closed? I'm not looking for an extended desktop, just something that would allow me to have it closed and use it with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse. I discovered that if I plug in an external monitor on my iBook (500MHz dual USB) and then connect my external USB hub to my iBook (which has a printer, Palm cradle and Apple Pro Keyboard connected) it would wake up from sleep and function like a desktop unit while the lid was closed. I think it was because the USB hub had an external power source which would provide power to the keyboard allowing it to signal the iBook to wake up. Interestingly, if I plugged in the USB hub and not the monitor, the iBook would wake, go through some brief activity, and then go back to sleep. I assume this was because it didn't sense the external video connection. I did all the above while keeping the screen closed. HOWEVER! After further research, I quickly learned that this is a practice that Apple says you should NOT do because it traps heat inside that would normally dissipate via the keyboard and palm rest. The heat buildup can cause not only damage to the internal components of the iBook, but possibly to the LCD screen as well (in the form of a blotchy display or even warping of the screen/bezel). I quit doing this as I didn't want to risk the premature death of my iBook. -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Maybe it is coming through in the supposed timbre of my posts? Maybe you are just interpreting it that way? Who knows. I assure you that I mean you and no one else here any harm or offense. I help far more often than I offend. I can understand growing tired of rehashing the same topics. However the biggest majority of subscribers are fairly new users or have a limited technical knowledge of how their Mac works. To them, their questions are new and it's a first time issue they're dealing with. I'm on the Duo/2400 list, have been for a couple years. There's nothing new to discuss there, just help folks who are new to the Duo. I'm burned out on explaining the same thing over and over so I sit back and read while the others explain. When someone doesn't present an explanation, I try to chime in. Otherwise I keep my yap shut. So I do understand where you're coming from but you catch more flies with honey (ie. converts to pro-Mac companies). Also, I do appreciate your expertise and realize that you've provided a lot of beneficial contributions. Thanks you for that. -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Was there ever an angled one or just a straight plug? The straight plug would mean that you could never lay the power brick flat on its back. That would be what I'm looking for but that URL doesn't seem to work. What's the part number, or what did you search for? Here's the stuff (I also emailed the page to you from Radio Shack's site). I just did a search for Compaq power cords. AC Power Cords-Compaq $3.99 Reg. Re: New adapter hard to plug in
Jeff Lentz on 7/23/01 7:41 AM wrote: I hate to even post another comment on the adapter exchange program, but my newly-replaced adapter's plug is extremely tight in the power jack and I'm worried it will damage the jack's mount. Anyone else have similar concerns/experiences? If it does break off the mounting for the jack, would Apple repair it out of warranty because it's due to the new adapter? Mine was far too tight in my Wallstreet and since I recall a much earlier post from someone who damaged the AC port on his Wallstreet after 2 weeks of using a yo-yo adapter (prior to the recall) I decided to loosen up mine. I rather barbaricly spread out the shield on the plug using a flat blade screwdriver. I slowly worked the screwdriver around the perimeter of the shield prying it outward. This resulted in a tiny gap at the seam of the shield which loosened it up enough to relieve the tightness. I was careful not to apply any significant pressure (while prying) to the jack in the center as I didn't want to break it. I repeated this until it was loosened up enough. It's still tighter than my original black AC but I feel more comfortable with it. Now it fits quite nicely. I don't think it would have loosened up enough over time. I figured it would be less costly to break the adapter than end up needing to replace the power board in my Wallstreet. disclaimer Do this at your own risk of course. end disclaimer -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet upgrade from Sonnet
Kathleen Wittenberg on 7/18/01 12:39 PM wrote: PowerLogix has been selling Wallstreet upgrades for quite some time now. Small Dog has the Blue Chip 466 mhz upgrade for $249 during MacWorld NY and the 500mhz upgrade for $579. Yeah I knew that but I'm a big fan of Sonnet (have one in a 7100 8100 and did a PB1400 which I've sold). Besides, at $399 it's $180 less than PowerLogix and seeing as I'm poor, I can wait for the release. I know a fellow (a Mac tech) who had the 466MHz PowerLogix and while he said it was faster he didn't see a huge leap over his 233MHz Wallstreet. Plus he said that it wouldn't support over 256MB RAM. He actually had to remove memory to get it to work. Poor guy had to sell it and buy a PowerBook G4 (tiny violins). I would guess PowerLogix will come down when Sonnet releases though. -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Another PC Card Adapter Question
[EMAIL PROTECTED] on 7/8/01 3:28 PM wrote: hi i just wanted to ask - i just got a sony digital camera and was looking to get a pc card adaptor and wanted to see which one you all use and if you know about how much you paid for it etc... like where to buy from and well any and all the info that would help as i am new to the whole digital camera. Doesn't Sony use a proprietary memory stick? As such I'm not sure there is a PC card adapter available for it (unless it's through Sony). However I don't know this to be a fact but it was the one reason I went with a Toshiba as it uses the readily available SmartMedia. I picked up the PC Card adapter for it a Target for just $10. -makmac -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
