1GHz Powerbook OS 9 install woes

2006-02-04 Thread Kevin O'Grady
Just got a PB 1GHz laptop yesterday, and it arrived with only 10.3.2
installed. I tried to get it to load OS 9, but kept getting a
flashing icon even after using my OSX 10.4 DVD to erase and install
OS 9 drivers. I read an article from Apple regarding this issue
(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61790), but I might
not possess the recommended install DVD (restore disk) among the ones
that arrived with it. Other than this glitch, I am very impressed
with the laptop.

Any and all input would be appreciated.

TIA

Kevin

Stardate 060204.12:14 -0500. A subspace message from Kevin O'Grady reads:

Where are you getting your Mac OS 9 from?

If you're not using the official Restore DVD, then you'll need to
have the retail version of Mac OS 9.2.2 on CD, and use *that* to
install OS 9 *before* you even think of installing OS 10.x

If you have said disc, you should be able to boot from it (insert
disc, hit Power and immeditately hold 'C' until you see the happy Mac
icon). Use Drive Setup to erase your hard disk, ensuring you choose
to do so using HFS Extended (HFS+) as the file-system.

Run the OS 9 Installer, and install an un-modified (ie, don't change
anything in the Customise options) OS 9. Once it is finished, use
Startup Disk to set the HD as your boot drive. Restart, and hold down
the clicker until the disc is ejected. The machine will give you the
blinking-folder a few more times and then boot from the HD.

Once that's done, insert your Mac OS X Installer disc and put OS X on.

Kevin,
I have a 1GHz powerbook I've had for 3 years or so. It came
with OS 10.? I have since upgraded to OS 10.4. It has always had
OS 9 on it. I have programs from my old i-mac like Photoshop 7.0 and
Windows 2000 for the Mac. When I open those applications the laptop
automatically opens OS 9 for me. I asked about this feature when
I purchased the laptop because I did not want to pay for new
software. Perhaps later powerbooks did not have both operating
systems on them. I'm glad mine does. I use MS Powerpoint to create
CD's of my lesson plans to sell to other art teachers. Since most
of the world is a PC world I want to provide a product that works
on real computers.
On a related issue, when I upgraded to OS 10.4 my wireless
connection to the web stopped working. The card I was using did not
support 10.4. So I had to invest in a newer card for the laptop.
(Big Bucks $$$) Perhaps if I had been using Apple's Airport this
would not have happened ?

Try installing PhotoShop from the CD (and any other Adobe software
from the same vintage). I got the whole Adobe Suite, including PS
7.0 and started installing it on a WallStreet running Jaguar and low
and behold it all installed as OS X Native (Carbon). A very pleasant
surprise.

Kevin - you saying you are trying to install OS 9. Are you trying to install
OS 9 to boot into 9 or to run in Classic mode? At some point a couple years
back Apple dropped OS 9 as a bootable OS and since then we've only been able
to run it from within OS X. For this purpose the old OS 9 drivers aren't

If this is a powerbook G4 then perhaps it can't load OS9.2.2 because it

So if it IS the dual book notebook then it should start up with an OS 9.2 CD
and I'm sorry to report I no longer have mine or I'd be glad to send it to
you. It has been a very long time for me so all I remember about Error 11
was that it was pretty generic - a hardware fault - I think. It may mean
nothing more than you have a bad install disk. Bah! Like I said, I haven't
touched OS 9 in several years.

I've recently run into something similar. I was able to install OS 9
on a PB G4 12 by using the Software Install and Restore CD. I
booted to it, pretended I was starting over on my hard drive, but
only installed OS 9 support. In the end, my mac continued to boot
correctly in OSX (10.3.9), however I could launch OS 9 and run
Classic apps without a problem. Sorry I can't find the link to the
Apple site doc that explained this for me.

best of luck

Why not go to the source : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
