My Ethernet/Localtalk adapters cost me from $5 to $15 each, so I don't
consider that pricy. Ignore the poster who said serial-to-usb adapter;
that will not work with the 4/600 because the printer is not "serial", it
is localtalk. An ethernet/localtalk bridge is needed for localtalk
printers. If you don't have an extra ethernet port, look for the Farallon
EtherWave printer adapter since it includes a mini-hub.

Apple's postscript level 2 lasers are compatible with OS X, including the
4/600, Pro 600, Personal 320, Select 360, Personal NTR, and IIf. The IIg
and higher models already have ethernet and require at most an AAUI/RJ45
dongle if anything.

>I have a similiar situation of connecting my Laserwriter II NTX...

An ethernet/localtalk bridge will put this printer on an ethernet
network, but only for MacOS 9 and earlier (it is not postscript level 2).

Older Macs can run LocalTalk Bridge, a free download from Apple. As the
title indicates, it will bridge between LocalTalk (the 4/600) and
ethernet. An old Powerbook 520 would be great for that purpose.

Oups! After reading my reply, I realize that you might not even be able to
connect the printer to your Pismo. Since I think this printer has only
serial connection, I'm thinking that you might not even be able to use it
with your Pismo. Sure, you could buy a Serial-to-USB adapter, but I'm not
sure this old printer would be worth the cost and the trouble to get it
hooked to your Pismo. FYI, I found a used LaserWriter 16/600PS on eBay a few
months ago for $80. This printer has built-in Ethernet (actually, it has a
FriendlyNet kind of connector, so you need a FriendlyNet adaptor, also
available for about $5 on eBay), and the printer is fully supported under OS
X. There is no need to share it from one computer since the printer is
always available on the network. Other printers with some kind of Ethernet
connection would work as well.

Re: Apple laserwriter 4/600ps & Pismo? or newer powerbook?

2005-04-12 Thread John Slavin
The Laserwriter 4/600PS is a network printer, although with a localtalk
port, so you need to get a localtalk to ethernet adapter. Then you can
connect it to an ethernet switch or even into a wireless base station.
Some basestations don't handle appletalk though, so be aware of that
issue. You'll need to be sure to activate appletalk in the network
panel of your macs to use it though. It'll work great. I use mine all
the time. It's a bit slow, but otherwise is a workhorse.

If this printer has an Ethernet port, then you can just put it on your
network with an Ethernet switch or hub.
But, since I think this model doesn't have any network-port, then you
will
have to connect it to your Pismo, then use OS X to share this printer
over
your network. If your Pismo is not running OS X, then you have 2
choices:
wait for Tiger on April 29th, buy it and install it on your Pismo, or
buy
another network-ready printer. Your new computer will only run OS X so
if
your Pismo is currently any flavor of the old OS 9, you won't be able
to
share it with your new PowerBook.
