Hi Ken,
I've been out of town for a couple of weeks. I just read your post
above and noted that you didn't seem to get any answers other than
the dummy who quoted WiFi formation to you. :-/ This seems to be the
nature of the G-Books list these days. People with serious,
worthwhile questions are ignored and those with PowerBook vs iBook
questions etc get dozens of replies.

Anyway, Here's what I'm using in all of my Operating Systems (OS
8.6/9/10.2.4 -- haven't tried it in 10.2.8 yet, but it should work).
I don't know if you can find this card now or not. I'm not sure if
Macally is manufacturing it any more. I bought it used for $30 or so.

It's a Macally FH-BUS2 Cardbus PCMCIA card. It has 2 FW ports on it
and uses a dongle. It works great in all Operating Systems.

If you're interested, maybe you can find a used one on the LEM swap
list or ebay. I don't know if these URLs are still valid or not:
Macally: http://www.macally.com/new/fw/newcardbusfw.html
http://www.applemugstore.com/cgi-global/generate_css_temp.cgi?p=a-52026

I can't help you regarding the WD card, but I have seen the following
cards suggested for OS 9:

Orange Micro: http://www.orangemicro.com/firewire.html#anchor1986149

Ariston: http://www.ariston.com/item.asp?ItemId=23

And I have read several good reports about an IBM FW card (don't have
a model number for it):

2005-06-19 Thread Tom Peterson
OS 9.2.2 on my wallstreet G4 saw an Orinoco Gold card 802.11b as airport.
OSX needed Xpostfacto to see the card.

On the G side of things. OSx 10.3.9 sees buffalo g card as airport, but
OS9.2.2 sees no airport card.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Don't know about how well it would work in your Lombard, but this is
what I'm currently using in my TiBook rev a 500 Mhz since I blew the
original port. Works well for me with both an external HD and a Sony
Camcorder for FW video/audio capture into FCP 3.

I'd look for the Firewire2go card from ol' Newer Technologies. I've
only had one problem, and it goes for all cards I've used-- On
transfers greater than 700 MB, the connection can sometimes fail, and
the WS subsequently crashes. Big time kernel panic.

 contection with a iPod?

I have used a IBM brand FW card with the same Wallstreet and a 5GB
iPod. The card (with four-pin cable) also works with my Canon ZR40
digital video camera. OWC used to carry them for around $27, but now
they list a different type. I saw the card at other places too around
that price, perhaps googlegear. The IBM p/n is 19K5680, it's called a
IEEE 1394 Cardbus Card. Transferred over 2GB of data from an iMac in
about 10 minutes, as compared to close to an hour via ethernet.

firewire card in Lombard with 10.2

2002-09-12 Thread April Westberg

I recently upgraded my Lombard to 10.2 since then I have been unable to
use my IBM firewire PCMCIA card to connect to my DV camera. My camera
is a Sharp, not one of the ones listed as supported by iMovie, but it
did work under 10.1.x.
Now when I connect my camera in iMovie and try to import footage, it
tells me there is no camera connected. I'm not sure if the change has
to do with the camera or with the firewire card.
Is anyone else using firewire cards with 10.2? Any ideas would be
welcome.

Yep, as Roger says, the 'built-in' requirement is nonsense. Any
FireWire-equipped Mac works with iMovie, for camera control and
capturing, whatever. Enjoy. You can still get the Newer FW2Go card for
under $40 and there's an IBM one for $29, I think.

Re: iMovie and firewire card in Lombard 400

2002-05-16 Thread Dick Grable

Worked fine on my 333 Lombard even using OS X. The playback screen was a
little choppy and VM had to be turned off when using OS 9 but otherwise
nothing unusual. The biggest constraint is the fact that digital video takes
1 gig per 5 minutes.

I just got a copy of iMovie 2.1.1 and saw the
requirements must have built in firewire. Does
this mean that a firewire card with my Lombard
400 Mac OS 9.1 won't work with iMovie 2? Has
anyone gotten it to work anyway with a firewire
 card?

Re: iMovie and firewire card in Lombard 400

2002-05-16 Thread Luis Sequeira

I'm running a 30G Travelstar drive that runs at 4200rpm, a Sonnet 500mHz
upgrade in a WS with 192MB of RAM, an OrangeMicro Firewire card and a
Sony DCR-VX2000. Playback is choppy onscreen, and export is terrible.
Almost no sound, and there are dropped frames. Anyone have any ideas?=20

Choppy playback onscreen may be normal, but terrible export definitely is not.

I use a Wallstreet 233MHz (yes, 233MHz, and no cpu upgrade), 320MB,
20GB Hitachi drive (4200rpm), and Newertech Firewire2Go firewire
card. Works like a charm (though, admittedly, I have never made any
real *big* project on it, video and audio quality is great and there
are no dropped frames).

Since your system is not working very well, these are the suggestions
that come to mind (I am assuming you're using system 9, otherwise
that becomes my first suggestion - with system X you'd be wasting
precious cpu cycles drawing the fancy aqua interface while dv frames
are quietly dropped :-():

turn off all unnecessary extensions (I used Extension manager to
create a very small extension set containing Quicktime, firewire and
little else; in particular anything related to Appletalk and Tcp/Ip
is turned OFF).

turn off virtual memory (throwing in more actual RAM might help too,
though you might get by with 192MB)

have a clean partition for capture and export to tape (in my setup, I
have a system partition, an editing partition and a capture/export
partition, that I erase often to avoid fragmentation).

if in spite of all this it still does not work properly, you might
want to try using BTV Pro for capture and output (that's what I use,
so it just might be that somehow iMovie is not behaving in your setup
- I can't offer evidence pro or against iMovie in my setup, because I
haven't used it).

It worked on my Lombard in OSX and OS9. But it worked unreliably with my
Maxtor HD in both. I believe it was due to not being OHCI compliant.

Can anyone confirm that the Newer FireWire PC card works under OS X
in a Lombard? The MacAlly USB/FW card in my beige G3 works using
Apple drivers in both OS 9.1 and OS X. Thanks.

Works for me just fine. I have OS X and a Lombard, and the

I still don't like X.

Believe it or not, iMovie does transitions and the such faster under OS
X than 9.1. With the big update do in September hopefully it will be
faster.

I don't know about OSX, but I DO know that the Firewire2Go
card (because it is not of the newest technology and not OHCI compliant) does not work
with some things. In my case
it will not allow my Wallstreet II to use my VST and Maxtor
firewire drives.

That's all I know.
