I am willing to try VLC, perhaps tomorrow, as ADP is regarded as long
gone more or less by myself.

Apple's RAGE MOBILITY implementation in their portables is an incomplete
subset of the chip's capabilities, as specifically mentioned in the
devnotes. What 'unimplemented' means exactly is a question for others as
I lack any more knowledge. However, I suspect . . .

that it's a hardware thing and so cannot be "turned on" by any software.

So I'm not clear on your answer to the big question: Under X, does ADP
launch and play something/anything in a gen 2 (FW) clamshell? You mean
you did try X + ADP and it successfully launched? Or you haven't yet but
are willing to try it?

If it did launch OK, even without a DVD-ROM installed, then any standard
DVD ought to play if you install a DVD drive. ADP checks only for
playback support AFAIK, and not for the presence of a DVD drive(?).

K, hold on, I'll test this last question myself:

OS9's ADP launched fine in absence of DVD-ROM drive. For completeness, I
suppose I should do the same with a Pismo under X . . . sigh

Yep, X's ADP launched fine in absence of DVD-ROM drive.

Yeesh! :-)

According to ATI it can:

Are there other RAGE MOBILITY cards in the 1gen clamshell iBook? If so,
why can't I find any info on earlier incarnations anywhere? That Apple
doesn't support this decoding feature with the X DVD player is clear, but
does the OS actually prevent other apps from using it? Can it perhaps be
turned on somewhere? Does there have to be a VDplayer in the machine in
order for the hardware (graphics card) MPEG-2 decoding to become activated?

I posted the same ATI sourced data and the same questions before and
noone seemed to know or care.

These are the type of questions that needs to be answered IMHO.

Larry,
The third generation iBooks were Indigo for 366mhz and Graphite for the
466mhz SE. But the Key lime was available in both speeds, 366 and
466SE. This info was on the little fold-up brochures provided by Apple
(I have one somewhere, but can't find it) and is also reviewed in the
December 2000 MacAddict (p. 16, where it says Key Lime glows in the
dark under a black light!)

I think the second generation also had an SE, the 366mhz in Graphite.
IIRC, the standard iBook was 300mhz in Blueberry and Tangerine (in both
first and second generation).

AFAIK, no first gen clamshell can use Apple's DVD Player (ADP)under X,
same as with Lombard the ATI RAGE Mobility chip doesn't support mpeg2

Short of looking on the Apple System Profiler/some other processor tell-tale
app, the color would seem to be a good thing to go by... but not absolute.

I had an tangy iBook that I sold a few days ago; I WAS going to give it to my

P(ie)C(e) (of...) laptop from our daddy; oh well!)...

But before she got it, she wanted me to make it Graphite on the outside. I
have all the Graphite pieces, and the switch would not have been very hard.

I am assuming your iBook does not boot at all?

320 MB officially. It may take more, but it isn't supported beyond 320
MB.

I think I've read from members here on this list that did the upgrade
themselves. They are a little bit difficult to do, since the hard drive is
hard to get to. But, if you're not afraid of working in a laptop's
internals, and have the service manual, you can probably do it yourself, and
save yourself a few bucks in the process...

featurectomy /fee`ch*r-ek't*-mee/ n.: The act of removing a feature from a
program. Featurectomies come in two flavors, the `righteous' and the
`reluctant'. Righteous featurectomies are performed because the remover
believes the program would be more elegant without the feature, or there is
already an equivalent and better way to achieve the same end. (Doing so is
not quite the same thing as removing a misfeature.) Reluctant featurectomies
are performed to satisfy some external constraint such as code size or
execution speed.

Thanks for the link I may look into this service myself. I mean the
prices seem reasonable when you think about the cost of drives and the
amount of labor involved. But I couldn't find any info on what brand of
drive they want to put in there. For that I'd just give them a call and
see. I'd probably want to keep the old drive rather than get just a $30
rebate for it. I'd just stick that in a firewire case and be on with it.

MCE seems like a fairly respectable company from what I've heard. I've
seen a friend do this upgrade and believe me, it wasn't pretty but it
was doable if you have the patience and knowhow. I've never done
business with MCE, so I'd say be careful and dont leave any *sensitive*
data on there if you choose to send it in.

Also, possibly more importantly check to see if there is any warranty
on their parts and service. If they stick a drive in there and it
breaks something else will they fix it or pay for it to be fixed? Or
will they just say it wasn't working when it got there? Just be a
cautious and educated consumer. Cover your end!
