That's a very valid point. I remember 15 years ago, when I was working for

Microsoft Word. After talking to them, most of the time, they would have
used maybe 10% of everything Word had to offer back them. There were cheaper
alternatives but people didn't know better. So, I think it's good that
someone mentions alternatives to the big gorilla of software. Bill Gates is
rich enough so all our money doesn't have to go in his pockets. I too run
Office 2004 on my Mac through an employee purchase program where I could get
any Microsoft software for $20. I would never pay $200 or even more for
Microsoft software, specially when you see how bad the performance is
because of the pseudo language they're using. But because I need friggin'
Outlook compatibility, I stuck with Entourage, which, actually is not too
bad when compare to the other apps...

Pages /was open source software site

2006-02-02 Thread Peter Webster

I use Pages almost as much as Abiword. It's really clean—uncluttered,
that is. Straightforward. I don't like the spelling checker a lot,
but it's enough to help catch mistakes. The page numbering could be
better, but it's adequate for short pieces. I use Pages for
commentaries on news for my blogs. It's a good example of something
that does what it needs to do. The page layout itself is dandy: good
for newsletters. Good substitute for the word processing in Appleworks.

I just posted a long response regarding Word Processors. But, as
soon as iWork 06 came out, I bought it. Pages is dramatically
improved over the 05 version. It definitely gets my vote as #2.
And, I do use it. If you're going to do an article with pictures,
etc, it's a LOT easier to use than Word. Apple did a really great
job and adding the little Excel-like additions was quite nice.
Keynote gets my vote over PowerPoint any day--I think it's wonderful.

Can Keynote presentations be shared with Windows users? Can it take a

wouldn't work for me. All of my company's online materials are

Speaking of that, is there a way to get iChat to connect with people

Not to present. You can export the Keynote presentation to PPT. In

In my experience with OpenOffice (NeoOffice is a Mac port of OpenOffice) I've
been pleased with it, and I personally prefer it to Microsoft Office, but
that's my humble opinion. On a Mac, NeoOffice is painfully slow loading on my
G3/400, but it's pretty responsive once it's open. OO does keep up with
Office on Wintel machines, though.

Featureset: Almost all the features of Office, with the exception of an
Entourage/Outlook-type program are included. Mozilla Thunderbird makes a good
replacement, though.

In conclusion, a good Open Source suite can be assembled that will keep up
with and exceed the 'standards' set by Microsoft and Office.

I have used office 97, 2000, and now xp on my pc. I have open office
on my desktop as well as office xp. On my ibook I have office 2004 as
well as neo office. As far as microsoft software goes I would replace
any open source app for microsoft stuff. I really don't like ms office
on a mac but I use different apps depending on what I am doing. Since
most of the open source office apps integrate with ms office appsI
have not had any problems.

I think some of the open source stuff runs better on older macs G3's
and such and ms office is such a resource hog.

My two cents, I'm also lucky to have been able to get all of my
software from my days in college, when I was at Purdue Microsoft had a
deal that you were able to get any of their titles at 5.00

Re: open source software site

2006-02-01 Thread Steve Peckey
Its funny when I posted stuff on here about open source software I did
not think it would be met with such strong opinions. Its almost like
its a apple vs pc debate. I just posted because I would think that
most of the users could utilize open source stuff without spend $$$ on
software that they may use a few times a week. Even student that don't
have a software program with their school would rather save the 200.00
on an app if they can use a office suite that is free.

My two cents again

Cheers
Steve

 Cheers

Clarification here: you really replaced a program suite that you
paid $400 for with open source NeoOffice? Pardon my doubt here, but
Microsoft Office is the 'gold standard'. I can't imagine that any
open source would run as fast or offer as many features. Now I do
have to qualify this statement (critique) by saying that I've never
tried any of the open source software available and I would need some
pretty convincing evidence to get me to chuck out Office 2004 in
favor of something written in java and needing to have X11 added to
my computer. How about some real world examples. When I click on
Word, it opens in seconds.maybe 1 second (I just tried it)...does
the open source version do that? Bruce, you know I totally respect
your opinion, but this one has me a bit doubtful.

HandBrake, Nvu and NeoOffice are great. I've replaced MS office

There's a lot of cool stuff there.

A site with TONS of OSS stuff is Sourcforge.org. Its all platforms,
but you can search for projects with OS X ports.

(Also pure Java apps run well on OS X...and there's a lot of those

Ah, I'm happy with Abiword: seems to be an application that *more*
than meets my needs. I like the idea of the internet being more than
just a marketing gig.

I'm writing a book on Abiword. I think that's pretty serious work.

That's a very valid point. I remember 15 years ago, when I was working for
an Apple dealer, people were walking in the store and were asking for
Microsoft Word.
Outlook compatibility, I stuck with Entourage, which, actually is not too
bad when compare to the other apps...

juggling eggs: vi. Keeping a lot of state in your head while modifying a
program. Don't bother me now, I'm juggling eggs, means that an interrupt
is likely to result in the program's being scrambled. In the classic 1975
first-contact SF novel The Mote in God's Eye, by Larry Niven and Jerry
Pournelle, an alien describes a very difficult task by saying We juggle
priceless eggs in variable gravity. See also hack mode and on the gripping
