I always figured they were DOS programs because those writing them were too lazy to create a GUI. It's plain old DOS usually - booted from a floppy to the flashing A drive prompt so you can easily fashion a DOS boot floppy for each card you may wish to flash. Flashing can be done with Windows running with apps like WinFlash etc but the problem is that the Windows flashing apps are unlikely to recognise or use a mac rom. It's also worth pointing out that many Radeon cards are flash locked to access only 64K of the rom and full mac roms are 128K. So reduced roms or high soldering skills are required - reducing is done by removing more than half of the mac rom data. Unlocking via soldering requires moving very very small resistors. The rom chip onboard the card may also be only 64K but they are quite easy to replace with 128K chip. Cards flashed with a reduced mac rom should then be flashed again in a mac using Graphiccelerator 1.3.3a utility and the full mac rom as it ignores the 64K lock. I have a DA with a flashed 9600 256mb card and it is OK but certainly no world beater. I'd say it performs only as good as my 9800 128mb card in my other DA. The 9800 256mb cards and even better, the 9800XT's are a very good card and well worth the extra money. One thing though is that they do run hot and the video cards onboard fans are prone to a high failure rate. I replaced mine with an excellent Artic Cooler fan which runs just slightly louder but keeps the card so much cooler. Stewie _ Need a new place to live? If you are running Leopard the GeForce 6200 will cause a boot delay of 2 - 3 minutes (unless you flashed it with the modified ROM that removes the temperature sensing function). But on the + side, once booted you can monitor the GPU temp using a program like Temperature Monitor; I don't think the Radeon 9550 has temp sensor capability. I put up with the 6200's boot delay because I like to monitor temperatures, heat can build up in Macs when you start adding processor upgrades, RAM, better video cards, additional hard drives, etc. If the 6200 is a fanless model you should look into putting a fan on it, these are popular add-ons for the 6200: http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?action=ITEMprod_id=FANTIC3 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Beige G3 not booting from CD!
But the low-profile SIMMs are for the VRAM, correct? The RAM modules are standard PC-66 low-density ones, right? Yesterday I was busy tinkering with the PM... installed some old apps which I found in Macintosh Garden, and then started copying some old floppies I have here (unfortunately, some of them have become corrupted and are not read anymore :( ). And using it with my 22'' HP flat screen is simply great (I tinkered with the dip switches on the adapter until I found the perfect resolution - now the Mac thinks it is attached to a 21'' Apple fixed-resolution display, and goes up to 1152xsomething. I haven't noticed until last night that the PM was able to sleep - I had it turned on, and went away for a while. When I came back the power LED was flashing and it had turned off... great! And I totally love the design of the case - these were the days when Apple was genuinely concerned with the user-serviceability of their machines, and made it really easy to work inside of it (even in a desktop machine, which are always smaller!). I have the standard size simms in it so I have the case off and top part slightly open so the simms don't have any weight on them. I am certain this has totally messed up the designers airflow through the mac and is most likely the cause of the video card over heating. But when I want to run an application for days on end without any consideration, I start it on the old Beige G3 and turn the monitor off and forget about it. It shares its files and does it job. And if I want to fire up the old scsi flat bed scanner I reboot to 9.2 and I can scan and use my old apple laserwriter printer to print it out. I don't know if that toner cart will ever empty grin. One is an Nvidia GeForce 6200 with 256MB RAM, the other is an ATI Radeon 9550 with 256MB of RAM. Both are flashed PC cards and work well on my system. Which one is better to use? If you are running Leopard the GeForce 6200 will cause a boot delay of 2 - 3 minutes (unless you flashed it with the modified ROM that removes the temperature sensing function). But on the + side, once booted you can monitor the GPU temp using a program like Temperature Monitor; I don't think the Radeon 9550 has temp sensor capability. I put up with the 6200's boot delay because I like to monitor temperatures, heat can build up in Macs when you start adding processor upgrades, RAM, better video cards, additional hard drives, etc. If the 6200 is a fanless model you should look into putting a fan on it, these are popular add-ons for the 6200: http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?action=ITEMprod_id=FANTIC3 All true DC but I don't think you have to modify the Rom if you don't want to. I seem to recall reading that it is the temp.kext that you can simply remove or add back into your library to have the temp monitor working or not. These nvidia 6200s are the best video cards for the G4 Cube - also 2x AGP slots, so have been pretty well documented. http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13181pid=90144mode=threadedshow=st=; Stewie _ View photos of singles in your area! But Mini, I don't HAVE a Bluetooth Mouse!
Hiya Listers, Can anyone tell me why my G4 1.5 GHz Mini (OS X Tiger 10.4.2, deliberately!) thinks I have a Bluetooth Mouse and insists I produce it? I had to restart my Mini because it locked up when I plugged my USB external HD into it (something I've done successfully before), but along with the desktop coming up, the Bluetooth Setup Assistant is trying unsuccessfully to find a Bluetooth mouse. All I have is optical mice which (up until a few minutes ago with the Mini here) worked fine. My present mouse is a Logitech optical 2 button scroll wheel mouse which I've been using and it's still working fine on my Quicksilver 867 (through the KVM) which I'm using right now to write this post. Anyway: Where's this Bluetooth stuff coming from? I don't own any Bluetooth peripherals of any kind, much less ever tried to set that up on my Mini. It's whining the following: Pairing with your Bluetooth mouse When your mouse is found, it will be paired with your computer. If your mouse is not found, make sure it is discoverable. If you are using an Apple Wireless Mouse, slide the cover on the bottom of the mouse to expose the LED. For a non-Apple mouse, see the documentation that came with the mouse. Need to know what to do to be able to start up the Mini and NOT get this. Never had this happen before... My boyfriend always has his work laptop (ouch, a Windoze box) with him when he comes over, and he has this little wireless card-sorta-thing for Verizon wireless Internet access which he uses for work (is this a Bluetooth device possibly?), but that stuff is always in the living room and the Mini is in the bedroom.other than that little wireless card-sorta-thing for his Verizon wireless account, at the moment I have no idea what else he's got that might be Bluetooth. Well, I'll be happy to try a safe mode boot (confirm please, shift-power button?) and turn off Bluetooth that way if you can tell me how. Re: place to sell my old G4
I agree with Richard. I only sell things, that are either cheap to ship, (laptops and the like, something that can fit in a flat rate box), and things that are worth some serious money. The only problem with that is the final value fees. -Jonas On 5/7/10, Dennis Myhand dmyh...@suddenlink.net wrote: InSaNeBoY wrote: ok, I'm sick of LEM Swap's moderation garbage.can't even revise lower pice and add more to a posting, than they give no way to try to 'appeal' the moderators whims, just gives me a bounced message when I try to email the list managers, than when I post to the group they yell at me and tell me to send a message to the list managers(yeah, catch 22!) is eBay my only route? or are there other mac sales lists/boards I could post it? -sam Which list manager are you trying to contact?
