This old mac mini has outlived it's usefulness. I am going to have to start
using my Kindle Fire for internet stuff, I guess. Buying a new computer

Internet on Mac Mini- wireless device?

2012-05-08 Thread cheryl
I am living in a place with no internet service, and I'm wondering if
I can use one of the wireless mobile devices. I don't think my machine
has an Airport card because when I check that on the system it says
no information available. The problem is that I don't know if one of
those mobile devices will run on a USB hub, and a mac mini only has
two USB ports, which are being used for my keyboard and mouse. Is
there any way to find out if my machine will take a wireless keyboard
and mouse? I bought it from someone on the swap list so i will try to
contact him as well.

The device I'm talking about is like the ones on this page:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Mobile-Broadband/No-Contract-Mobile-Broadband/pcmcat184400050021.c?id=pcmcat184400050021
You do have to pay for the internet service. They have ones with a
contract as well. We get a great cell phone signal up where I am, so
if these devices would work on a hub they would be a viable solution
to my internet dilemma.

Yes they'll run on a hub...in fact they may run even better, since you can
put them up at a higher elevation for a decent signal, possibly.

The hub HAS to be a USB2.2 hub (any new one today is at least that speed, but
I've got a couple of 'old reliables' laying about that are only 1.1), but
 they do work just fine.

Do you mean erasing the whole drive, or just the user's data?
In other words: do you want an empty drive, or a working Mac (booting and
with apps) but without any of your data left?

Giving that the subject line is: How do I remove an *OS* from a computer, I
 think
it's pretty plain. The earlier answer about booting from an install disc,
launching Disk Utility, clicking on the desired drive, then erase, and then
 going
into Security Options... and choosing how many times you want it
 overwritten, is
 the answer you're looking for.

 Relax.
There are no stupid questions - although there might be stupid answers. ;-)

The two machines I have I bought used with the operating systems
already installed and no disks and I have never had to clear a
computer, hard drive, whatever in order to sell it.

 So you're selling them?
I'd say you just need to erase your data (unless you don't mind other people
 getting their hands on it).

  I read somewhere
that if I sell a used computer I am supposed to remove the OS before I
  do.

It depends. Some Lists (like LEM-Swap) require to sell the machine with no
OS later than the Mac was shipped with, unless you give the original OS
 discs included.
(in other words, not giving away pirated OS copies)

IMHO it's pretty much up to you, however.
If the OS is the same you got the Macs with, you might as well leave it on.
Leaving an OS is a kind gesture to the new user - who might be even less
 computer-savvy than you. :-)

awry and fix it, look for pieces here and there and whatnot.
Otherwise, there is a time when one should just sell it or give it
away and get a more reliable machine, especially if it's your main
 one.

 Felix

My computer has a strange smell

2011-10-17 Thread cheryl
You guys will think I'm nuts but here goes. My Quicksilver 2002 has a
smell coming out of it. It doesn't smell like it's burning but it's
definitely not normal. I've cleaned it with canned air and vacuumed it
and I'm using it now. The smell is there but I can't find anything
hot, I don't see any smoke. It's coming straight out of the exhaust
fan. Right now I'm running it with the case open so I can keep an eye
on it. Any ideas as to what it could be? The air intake fan appears
not to be running, but since I run the machine with the case slightly
open that shouldn't be a problem. Any advice would be appreciated!

 Bad caps in the PSU.

Alas, these are not easily replaced.

Replacements, when available, are usually rated 85 C, whereas the
originals are usually rated 105 C.

Re: My computer has a strange smell

2011-10-17 Thread cheryl
It is like a melted plastic smell. I had an issue this summer where
the machine would overheat and shut itself off (no AC in my apartment,
it gets up to almost 90 in here during a hot summer day) so a friend
suggested opening the case just a tiny bit to let extra heat escape.
The CPU fan is not running. It's moving but it's stuck. But that is
not where the smell is coming from. It's coming from the PSU.

I got this computer used from someone on the LEM swap list and it has
served me well for several years, but maybe it's time to replace it
with something a bit newer.

A QS 2002 supports large drives natively.

I would install a 500 GB or 750 GB drive on top of the existing drive.

750s might be tough to find, however.

I don't have money to buy a drive. That's what I'd like to do, just
add another drive; supposedly the QS has two bays for hard drives. I
don't need a lot more space, but it would help to be able to store
some of my stuff on a second drive.

Ok.  Then install AppleJack.  It is a shell script that runs in
Single User Mode.  In that mode, it can do a full repair of the disk
volume, as if you were booted from some other disk.

 http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/

 Run the AppleJack installer.

Then to run AppleJack, reboot your Mac while holding down cmd-S.
This will put you into the raw unix shell - the underbelly of OS X.
Then type the command 'applejack' and hit return.  It will then give
you an old fashioned menu.  Tell it to do everything.

everything, btw, will include clearing the kernel cache just like
OnyX can do.  Of course, this is done after that all-importand Repair
 Disk step.

Quicksilver 2002 running slow...

My Quicksilver 2002 is slowing down. I'm getting the spinning beach

happening at other times too. There is often a lag when I type. The
machine is running 10.5 and is a 933 with 896mb of RAM. A 60gig hard

crash. He also said the TV shows I've bought from iTunes could be
slowing it down. I'd appreciate any input you may have.

I wouldn't go below 10% free space (or 6GB in your case), that should be the
 minimum.

I talked to someone who said my hard drive may be about to

Usually, slowing down is not a sign of impeding HD death. Strange noises
 (tak-tak-tak, click-clack...) are.

But a good backup is ALWAYS a good thing to do. ;-)

He also said the TV shows I've bought from iTunes could be

I can't see why those files could slow down a computer.
No file, on its own (I mean, not running/playing), could slow down the
 computer.
Unless - as I said above - those files filled the HD, leaving little or no
 free space.

Re: Mac Mini stuck after it was working

We disconnected the ethernet and started up the computer, then shut it
down, plugged the ethernet back in and it's fine. We have a new
problem though. We need to run the software update but the previous
owner (her uncle) has a password on it and we don't know it, can't get
it because he has passed away. Is there a way to bypass it? Or do we
have to reinstall the OS? She was going to go and buy Leopard but I
told her not to before she adds memory. Has anyone here added memory
to a Mini? I've heard it's tricky because it's easy to screw it up.
She's only got 256mb on it so I don't think she can run Leopard at
this point. The next priority is to get past the password issue.

One thought, she didn't install any software from RoadRunner did she?
The biggest mistake people make is to install the software from the ISP.

Re: HP Printers not compatible?-was which printer do you like?

2008-12-30 Thread cheryl

Mine is a HP 1210xi all-in-one. It's probably 5 years old. I already
knew that scanning isn't supported in Leopard. But then the printer
just quit with error messages whenever I try to use it. At this rate I
feel it's best to just buy a new printer. It was only about a week ago
that they told me that the printer itself won't work on Leopard.

I'm leaning towards the Kodak. The ink is inexpensive and I don't need
a workhorse printer. I use it to print out images on T-shirt transfer
paper to use in my polymer clay work, and I print out game cheat
sheets, invoices, etc. If I want a high quality photo I would probably
go to Walgreens or someplace.

Re: Power failure-computer won't start

2008-12-26 Thread cheryl

Home Depot has the Monster Power surge protectors, which is what I've
been using for the last 7 years or so. I'll probably go get one of
those to replace this one once they plow the roads so I can drive! I
don't have any way to test the pram battery so I may just replace it.
I think I'll replace the surge protector before I do anything else. I
bought the G4 from someone on LEM Swap, so I don't have any warranties
or anything on it. It sounds like there's a good chance that I'll be
able to get the G4 back up and running, and in the meantime I can use
my G3.

Thanks so much to all for your help. I'll post and let you know how it
goes with the G4.

That don't sound to good. It's possible that the G3 doesn't pull as much
amps as the G4. So the G3 may run but the G4 won't. Try plugging G4 into
wall to test w/out surge protector, also take surge protector completely
out of system to test. Start researching the lack of the light on
manufacturers web site and warranty info. Some uses the ground light is
on for normal/ok ground, and others the ground light is on if failure.
Get one of the plugin testers below to check the ground.

  Where is the reset button?

It's a 1/4 silver square with a black button on top. Mostly down by the
hinge side of board but a couple are up by the latch. On one model
there's 2 next to each other. One's a power and the other is pram/reset
 button.

And is the pram battery that small lithium
battery thats on the door of the machine?

 Correct

  Thanks!

Open door and briefly push the reset button or remove pram battery for
2+ minutes (wouldn't hurt to check voltage on battery while it's out).

Assuming that the G3 is in a different location:
Also try pulling power cord for 5 minutes. If other items not working on
strip or same wall outlet check breaker and power at wall outlet.

Another step would be to start unplugging devices, does the same
  keyboard/mouse work ok on G3?

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread cheryl

Wow, I didn't think I'd get so many responses! Thanks so much.

I've only had an Epson Stylus years ago and then this HP for the last
5 years or so. Both were inkjet not laser, so I don't know anything
about laser printers.

I'm not going to be doing a lot of printing. One thing I liked about
my old Epson was that you could do a lesser-quality print like a draft
which used less ink if you just needed a reference photo or to print
out a list. Or were printing out a walkthrough for an adventure game.
LOL! I do photos occasionally, and one thing I really want to be able
to do again is print my own business cards. I know it's expensive to
do it yourself, but I print them up maybe 40 or 50 at a time and I
don't need 1000 of them. The HP is a tray feed so I couldn't make them
myself because the perforations would break when it went through the
rollers and I'd end up with it all screwed up.

There are times when my printer will sit for months unused, and then
I'll use it several times. So a printer that clogs easily is probably
not a good thing. I also can't spend more than about $100. Boy I'm
asking a lot, huh?

Now that I think of it I need decent photo printing because I do image
transfers that I put on polymer clay as part of my artwork. For what I
do it doesn't have to be top quality but it at least has to be
decent.

There's one point I'd like to bring up in here.

If you print EVERY DAY, these things are major workhorses, and go
forever. If you don't they're clogging nightmares, particularly in dry
climates (either for real like here in the desert SW, or artifical in
 a heated space in winter)

Which printer do you like?

I have a HP 1210xi all in one that has quit on me. I don't think it's
really compatible with Leopard. Anyway, I really like Epson printers
but I thought it would be a good idea to ask what you like. I'm on a
