printer won't install?

2008-09-01 Thread cheryl

I have a G4 Quicksilver running Leopard. I decided to see if my
printer will work with this computer. I downloaded and installed
software and such that I thought would help, but the computer isn't
recognizing the printer. It's a HP psc 1210xi all-in-one. Any advice?

Thanks! -Cheryl

question about memory for my G4

2008-09-02 Thread cheryl

I have 384mb of memory on this G4 quicksilver. I'm not too savvy about
this tech stuff. How much more memory can I add? I have one empty
slot. And which kind should I get? The ones in there now are pc133,
one 256mb and one 128mb. I'd like to go to at least 512 or more if
possible. Thanks!

Re: question about memory for my G4

2008-09-02 Thread cheryl

I forgot to mention that I have the 2002 933mhz model. Mine has 3
slots. Ok, so they have to be PC133. But I have no idea about how many
chips to a side, etc. I'll check out OWC. I think that's one of the
places that my mac friend likes a lot. I guess I'm not the only one
with questions about memory!

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread cheryl

Wow, I didn't think I'd get so many responses! Thanks so much.

I've only had an Epson Stylus years ago and then this HP for the last
5 years or so. Both were inkjet not laser, so I don't know anything
about laser printers.

I'm not going to be doing a lot of printing. One thing I liked about
my old Epson was that you could do a lesser-quality print like a draft
which used less ink if you just needed a reference photo or to print
out a list. Or were printing out a walkthrough for an adventure game.
LOL! I do photos occasionally, and one thing I really want to be able
to do again is print my own business cards. I know it's expensive to
do it yourself, but I print them up maybe 40 or 50 at a time and I
don't need 1000 of them. The HP is a tray feed so I couldn't make them
myself because the perforations would break when it went through the
rollers and I'd end up with it all screwed up.

There are times when my printer will sit for months unused, and then
I'll use it several times. So a printer that clogs easily is probably
not a good thing. I also can't spend more than about $100. Boy I'm
asking a lot, huh?

Now that I think of it I need decent photo printing because I do image
transfers that I put on polymer clay as part of my artwork. For what I
do it doesn't have to be top quality but it at least has to be
decent.

Power failure-computer won't start

2008-12-25 Thread cheryl

My G4 won't start up. The power went out while I was gone, and when it
came back on, I couldn't get the computer to start. The light on the
button comes on but then it goes out as soon as I take my finger off
it. The monitor and internet box are fine, and right now I'm working
on my old G3. Thank Goddess I didn't get rid of it! I have a surge
protector power strip that's made for computers and peripherals.

So do you think the computer is fried or is it just a fuse or
something? I've had the power go out while the machine was on and it
came back up just fine. This time I had it in sleep mode. I don't know
if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The keyboard, mouse and monitor are working fine with the G3 and they
are all plugged in to my MonsterPower surge protector. I do notice
that the light for the ground is on but the protection light is not.

Where is the reset button? And is the pram battery that small lithium
battery thats on the door of the machine?

Thanks!

Re: Power failure-computer won't start

2008-12-26 Thread cheryl

Home Depot has the Monster Power surge protectors, which is what I've
been using for the last 7 years or so. I'll probably go get one of
those to replace this one once they plow the roads so I can drive! I
don't have any way to test the pram battery so I may just replace it.
I think I'll replace the surge protector before I do anything else. I
bought the G4 from someone on LEM Swap, so I don't have any warranties
or anything on it. It sounds like there's a good chance that I'll be
able to get the G4 back up and running, and in the meantime I can use
my G3.

Thanks so much to all for your help. I'll post and let you know how it
goes with the G4.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-28 Thread cheryl

I emailed HP about my printer and they said it's not compatible with
Mac OSX Leopard. I'm going to give it to my brother who's on a PC and
see if he can use it.

What do think of the new Kodak printers? I doubt many people have them
yet since they are new but the ink is going to be much less expensive,
like half the price of most others. Also, it's an all-in-one for $100.
I'm thinking about it. I want to stick with an inkjet because that's
what I'm familiar with.

Re: HP Printers not compatible?-was which printer do you like?

2008-12-30 Thread cheryl

Mine is a HP 1210xi all-in-one. It's probably 5 years old. I already
knew that scanning isn't supported in Leopard. But then the printer
just quit with error messages whenever I try to use it. At this rate I
feel it's best to just buy a new printer. It was only about a week ago
that they told me that the printer itself won't work on Leopard.

I'm leaning towards the Kodak. The ink is inexpensive and I don't need
a workhorse printer. I use it to print out images on T-shirt transfer
paper to use in my polymer clay work, and I print out game cheat
sheets, invoices, etc. If I want a high quality photo I would probably
go to Walgreens or someplace.

Is there a better graphics card? I wanted to play a game that requires
128mb video ram. Mine is only 64, and the game won't run. The other
specs are

933mhz processor, 896 mb ram. Running 10.5.

Thanks!

My G4 seems to be running slow

2009-09-05 Thread cheryl

I am using a Quicksilver 2002, 933mhz with 896mb ram. Lately it's been
running slow, especially on the internet. I went through and deleted
all the game files I'm not using, etc, but it's still slow. I've run
the disk utility. Is there anything else I can do? I have a lot of jpg
image files stored on the hard drive but I still have plenty of hard
drive space. I realize that 933 is not much compared to new models but
I can't replace this computer right now.

Thanks!

Mac Mini "stuck" after it was working

2009-10-20 Thread cheryl

My friend has acquired a 2005 Mac Mini. It's the one with the 1.25ghz
processor, "not Intel". It's running Panther. I don't know if it's got
256 or 512 of ram.

Anyway, she got her internet service hooked up (Roadrunner High Speed)
and at first everything was fine. About 2 hours into using the
computer, she said the beach ball started spinning and now it won't do
anything. She also says she keeps getting an error message that says
"DVI input no signal".

She talked to some guy from Apple (or maybe it was Frye's) and he told
her that she may as well buy another computer rather than install
Leopard and up the RAM. I think she can install Leopard herself, and
as for the RAM, I know that the Mac Mini is hard to work on because
everything is miniaturized. But would it really be that expensive? Do
you all think she's having problem because she doesn't have enough
memory, assuming she's only got 256? I told her not to go out and buy
another computer until I did some research.

Thanks!

Re: Mac Mini "stuck" after it was working

2009-10-21 Thread cheryl

If there was any software it's probably on her computer because she
wouldn't know not to tell them not to install it or to not install it
herself. How do we do a safe boot? I've never heard of it. I'm going
to go over there and fiddle around with it myself and see if I can
figure out the problem.

As for the error message, I've seen something similar on her TV, and
I'm thinking it has something to do with the cable feed. Maybe they
installed something wrong. I emailed my local Mac guy and I hope he
has some advice as well.

Re: Mac Mini "stuck" after it was working

2009-10-21 Thread cheryl

We disconnected the ethernet and started up the computer, then shut it
down, plugged the ethernet back in and it's fine. We have a new
problem though. We need to run the software update but the previous
owner (her uncle) has a password on it and we don't know it, can't get
it because he has passed away. Is there a way to bypass it? Or do we
have to reinstall the OS? She was going to go and buy Leopard but I
told her not to before she adds memory. Has anyone here added memory
to a Mini? I've heard it's tricky because it's easy to screw it up.
She's only got 256mb on it so I don't think she can run Leopard at
this point. The next priority is to get past the password issue.

Quicksilver 2002 running slow...

2011-06-23 Thread cheryl
My Quicksilver 2002 is slowing down. I'm getting the spinning beach
ball more and more often. It's really bad on Facebook but it's
happening at other times too. There is often a lag when I type. The
machine is running 10.5 and is a 933 with 896mb of RAM. A 60gig hard
drive. I talked to someone who said my hard drive may be about to
crash. He also said the TV shows I've bought from iTunes could be
slowing it down. I'd appreciate any input you may have.

Thanks,

There is about 10 gigs left on the drive. I was thinking about getting
a second hard drive.

I run the disk utility, and I usually go straight to repair disk
permissions. I have MacJanitor. Is that program not good enough? I did
have OnyX but I took it off my drive. Maybe I need to go get it back!

Question about hard drives

I have a Quicksilver 2002 and a Blue and White G3. I need more hard

Thanks!

I don't have money to buy a drive. That's what I'd like to do, just
add another drive; supposedly the QS has two bays for hard drives. I
don't need a lot more space, but it would help to be able to store
some of my stuff on a second drive.

My computer has a strange smell

2011-10-17 Thread cheryl
You guys will think I'm nuts but here goes. My Quicksilver 2002 has a
smell coming out of it. It doesn't smell like it's burning but it's
definitely not normal. I've cleaned it with canned air and vacuumed it
and I'm using it now. The smell is there but I can't find anything
hot, I don't see any smoke. It's coming straight out of the exhaust
fan. Right now I'm running it with the case open so I can keep an eye
on it. Any ideas as to what it could be? The air intake fan appears
not to be running, but since I run the machine with the case slightly
open that shouldn't be a problem. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: My computer has a strange smell

2011-10-17 Thread cheryl
It is like a melted plastic smell. I had an issue this summer where
the machine would overheat and shut itself off (no AC in my apartment,
it gets up to almost 90 in here during a hot summer day) so a friend
suggested opening the case just a tiny bit to let extra heat escape.
The CPU fan is not running. It's moving but it's stuck. But that is
not where the smell is coming from. It's coming from the PSU.

I got this computer used from someone on the LEM swap list and it has
served me well for several years, but maybe it's time to replace it
with something a bit newer.

Will Snow Leopard run on a PPC Mac? And question about Firefox

2011-11-12 Thread cheryl
I have an older Mac Mini that has a PPC processor. I'm currently
running the latest version of Leopard and I'm just wondering if Snow
Leopard will run on this machine. I've heard it won't but you guys
know more!

Also, the latest version of Firefox is not compatible with my OS. Are
there any other browsers out there that will run on Leopard?

Thanks!

Re: How do I remove an OS from a computer?

2012-01-02 Thread cheryl
I'm not savvy about any of this, so if I sound like an idiot, that is
why. The two machines I have I bought used with the operating systems
already installed and no disks and I have never had to clear a
computer, hard drive, whatever in order to sell it. I read somewhere
that if I sell a used computer I am supposed to remove the OS before I
do.

So if I just delete my own personal stuff, it will be ok to leave the
OS on? That's the main thing I want to do is remove my own stuff and
I'm afraid I will do it wrong and leave something there.

Internet on Mac Mini- wireless device?

2012-05-08 Thread cheryl
I am living in a place with no internet service, and I'm wondering if
I can use one of the wireless mobile devices. I don't think my machine
has an Airport card because when I check that on the system it says
"no information available". The problem is that I don't know if one of
those mobile devices will run on a USB hub, and a mac mini only has
two USB ports, which are being used for my keyboard and mouse. Is
there any way to find out if my machine will take a wireless keyboard
and mouse? I bought it from someone on the swap list so i will try to
contact him as well.

Re: Internet on Mac Mini- wireless device?

2012-05-08 Thread cheryl
The device I'm talking about is like the ones on this page:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Mobile-Broadband/No-Contract-Mobile-Broadband/pcmcat184400050021.c?id=pcmcat184400050021
You do have to pay for the internet service. They have ones with a
contract as well. We get a great cell phone signal up where I am, so
if these devices would work on a hub they would be a viable solution
to my internet dilemma.

Unresponsive script warning on Facebook

I get this message every time I try to use Facebook:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You
can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will

Script: https://fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net/rsrc.php/v2/yw/r/eNJGemJDFDG.js:43

I'm on a PPC mac mini running 10.5.9, using TenFourFox as my browser. A
friend said something about script runtime? I ran OnyX and cleared my cache
