Re: G5 Damaged in Shipping

It's significant that it ran OK until you opened it up, set it on its side,
etc. The panic might simply be that a RAM stick got dislodged; try pulling
and reseating all the pieces. But even if that gets it started it sounds
like you should still be seeking a refund.

I bought one with a bent case several years ago, it looked just like yours
and it was far cheaper than a pristine one. My solution, which I highly
recommend, was to purchase a 27" monitor and hide the G5 behind it! Worked
great! But being the anal-retentive sort that I am I eventually got out a
bunch of large clamps and wrenches and went to work straightening the bent
aluminum. That worked pretty well cosmetically but since the rivets
were popped (like yours are) the case wasn't 100% stable; still I ran it
like that a few years. Finally I got a good used case at a great price and
transplanted all the "guts". What a PIA, unless you really like tinkering
with things it's very frustrating but not impossible. The only special
tool needed is a very long 2.5 mm torx driver, I found a 10" one at Ace
Hardware (Eklind 10" 2.5 mm torx #54925). Looking back at it I probably
should have stuck with my first solution.

Some newer clothes dryers come with a sweater rack that clips into the
dryer without tumbling. When my wife spilled water on her Dell laptop
I opened it up and placed it on the dryer rack at a low setting for a
couple of hours. I figured it was safe enough for wool sweaters so it
should be OK for a laptop. Might be a little safer than the oven.

A few years ago I tried to see how much I could get out of an old

Thanks for the rational explanation Dan, for a Psychoceramic Emeritus
you are remarkably non-paranoid! I was mainly concerned because these
were outgoing, not incoming, activities. When I shut down Pandora and
cleared all website data most of the activity stopped. That makes
sense to me, Pandora is constantly running pop-up ads and collecting
data about the music I select. Even with just this page open I still
get 6 different connections (Activity Monitor shows only this page).
So I guess I'll try to be calm about 1.amazonaws.com,

The optical drive does have a paper clip access hole, it's just
difficult to get to it. You can try
1) pulling down on the outer drive door cover while applying gentle
pressure with your fingertips. If you can get the door open this way
you can see the access hole.
2) open the side of the G4, twist the optical drive 90 degrees
sideways while leaving the power and IDE cable connected, load the
disc, then put the drive back in place.

I agree with Dan, a SATA PCI card and 10K SATA (Raptor) drive is fast
and reusable in G5, MacPro, and PC machines. I do think SCSI drives
are cheaper right now. There are ATTO UL2x and UL3x cards for under
$25, 15K 36GB drives also around $25. They can also be reused in G5s
and other machines. The advantage of SCSI drives over IDE isn't so
much in the transfer speed as it is in the latency & seek/read/write
times. I don't have specific benchmarks now as I'm onto a MacPro, all
my SCSI machines are in storage (I probably should give them away).
But I've put fast SCSI drives in Macs from a 7200, beige G3, Smurf G3,
PCI G4, AGP G4s, etc. and they have always made noticable real world
speed improvement.

The easiest, cheapest and safest things to do with your MDD:
1. Download and run Monolingual. You can trim more than 2 GB of
unneccesary languages and architectures out your OS, it will run much
better. It's free.
2. SCSI PCI cards and SCSI hard drives are cheap now that most people
are using SATA or SSDs. A 15K SCSI drive with a 16 MB cache is an
awesome upgrade, around $50.00 for used 73 GB drives.
3. If you add another hard drive (of any kind) and use Carbon Copy
Cloner to clone your original drive it will defrag everything in the
process of cloning. Apple claims you don't need to defrag OS X but I
always felt mine ran better after using TechTool Pro to defrag files.

Thanks for the reply, Dan. I tried disconnecting peripherals and
resetting the PRAM, that's actually what the computer sounds like it's
doing with the chime repeating ad nauseum. Safe boot (shift key) or
boot options (option key) have no effect. The screen stays dark and
the chime keeps cycling. I'll pull all the internal drives this

firmware startup to the point where the drives would kick in. I'm
really disappointed that this seems to have been caused by the power
fluctuation because I was hooked up to an APC surge/battery backup,
but from what I've been seeing on the internet not many people seem to
think highly of APC.

No Startup, just an endlessly repeating chime

2011-10-14 Thread dc
I have a bad feeling about this...
After a brief power outage yesterday I now cannot start up my Mac
desktop. I get a nice chime but, a few seconds later, it chimes again
and just keeps repeating the startup chime. Holding keys- option,
shift-command-option-delete, command-option-o-f, etc.- has no effect,
it just keeps repeating the startup chime. I've had a number of
different Mac desktops over the years and I've never run across this
phenomenon. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem might be?
The computer was connected to a UPC battery backup surge protector at
the time and I was using it; as soon as I saw the UPC alert I went to
the Apple menu and shut the machine down normally.
The computer is an Intel-based MacPro (1,1) but I am wondering if
anyone ever had a similar problem, say with a G5 running Leopard?

You might be able to find a nVidia GeForce 7300GT pci-e on the swap
list. The early Mac Pros shipped with these and many people have since
upgraded their video card. When I added a Radeon 5870 to mine I moved
the GeForce card to the 8x slot and it works fine there as a second
card.

VirtualBox works with Leopard and Snow Leopard Server versions. From
their website:

Mac OS X Server (Leopard, Snow Leopard) Works without Additions

I run Windows 7 and XP from VirtualBox on my MacPro and they seem just
a little slower than when I boot Windows from Bootcamp. I find
VirtualBox much more convenient than rebooting in Bootcamp. I would
think you could pick up a used copy of Leopard Server pretty cheaply.

I have a G3 tower which I still occasionally use, I gave it an ATTO
express SCSI card and a 15K SCSI 68-pin hard drive. That setup is much
faster than any ATA drive and you won't be limited to a small boot
partition if you ever want to install Tiger. ATTO cards are available
for under $20, 15K SCSI (36 GB) drives can be had for under $40.

It should work. A few MDDs came with only single processors but I

First off, start researching at CubeOwner:
http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/

If you going to do any mods to the Cube put in a base fan. I have a
Zalman in mine running on low voltage and I can't hear it at all. Of
the processors you list only the dual 450 will work in the Cube and
that will require spacers under the heatsink. The others will probably
burn out the Cube's VRM if you try to run them. Processors for the
Cube are built differently from most other Mac models so that they
don't overload the Cube's VRM, which is it's weak spot.

Jump-Starting a "Dead" G5

2011-06-09 Thread dc
A G5 (DP 2 GHz) purchased from the LEM swap list a few weeks ago
worked quite well for a while, the only issue was the front USB port
didn't work. A few days ago it just stopped powering up. The front
power button gets me nothing, no chime, no LEDs, nothing. The power
supply still makes the usual single click when I unplug it/plug it in,
so I'm hoping it's just the front panel that's gone bad. I found a
pinout that shows front panel pin #2 as ground and pin #13 as power
button, so I'm thinking that if I momentarily bridge pins 2 + 13 it
should bypass the front switch and start up the G5. I'm wondering if
anyone has ever tried this? I'm not sure I want to be the first.

If it is a Mac edition or has had the ROM editted for the Mac it
should work just fine. If it is a PC card you will need to alter the
ROM for it to work. The best paln would be to 1) install it 2) boot up
3) if it works, great 4) if you get a black screen start looking for

I've run a GeForce 6200/256 AGP and a eForce 7800 GT/AGP in my DP G5
and either one is a big improvement over the OEM card. The 7800 GT is
arguably the best AGP you can get. There are no Mac versions of these

It's easy to remove the purple +28V wire from a QS PSU, you don't need
special tools. You just need 2 heavy duty sewing needles; push them in
the sides of the pin to compress the lock tabs and pull the purple
wire out, shazam! you have a Digital Audio PSU!

Start by identifying the specific model G5. You can do this by either
clicking on the Apple (top left corner of the screen) and selecting
"About This Mac" or by removing the side panel and looking for the
sticker on the bottom of the interior case.
Different G5 models can take different amounts of RAM and you will
want to max out the RAM to get optimal performance.
You also might want a better video card than the one that came with
the G5, and that will also depend upon the model G5 (AGP or PCI-e
video slot).
Post the hardware specifics here and you will get tons of good advice.

I once loaded up a Sawtooth with several extra hard drives and a
better video card, I was not able to overload the OEM power supply. I
went ahead and fitted a 550W ATX PSU anyway, mainly because of the
better fan; it ran MUCH quieter and pushed more hot air out of the

I think the Nvidia model would be a much better choice. From some
comments from themacelite:
•Galaxy Geforce 6800
This card has shown up recently on Ebay from Hong Kong and has a
smaller than normal 6800 PCB. It is not as fast as the large PCB
6800's. The card is disabled by hardware and a very curious PC ROM.
The Temperature Sensor, TV Out and DL do NOT work. It is not
overclockable. There are still some odd issues in certain computer
setup's with video card/ROM, so be warned.

Leopard will be slower than Tiger but I think you will find it
accaptable. One thing you can do: after installing and updating
Leopard download and run Monolingual (freeware). Remove all languages
you don't use and remove the Intel architecture. You'll save a few GB

Re: jumper settings on optical drives

2011-02-03 Thread dc
The MDD should show both optical drives (mine does); the first and
easiest thing I would try is to blow out both drives with a can of
compressed gas. Sometimes a little dust gets in and interferes with
the laser just enough to mess with you.

Re: Unstable PowerMac G4

2011-01-31 Thread dc
I would get a new hard drive and do a clean install of 10.4, see if
that fixes things. When hard drives first start to fail they randomly
lock up. 10.4, 10.3, 9.2, safe mode, single user mode... all these
access the hard drives in slightly different ways. I had very similar
symptoms in my Cube and was lucky enough to copy my files and get a
new hard drive in before the failure become a disaster.

I bought a used G5 in the same condition several years ago. I was able
to fix the optical drive issue by removing the drive and adjusting the
small mounting screws on the bottom. I ran the G5 for several years
with a paperback book under the damaged corner (there, I fixed it!).
Last summer I decided to really fix it and I transplanted everything
into a used case that I picked up from the LEM swap list. I don't
recommend that. It took me all day, plus searching around several
hardware stores for the right tool to remove the processors. I'd
suggest you first try to sell it as is.

Personally I wouldn't think a processor upgrade, even a used one,
would be worth it if you are getting a new Mac soon. Max out the RAM
to 1.5 GB, that should only cost $20 or so. You can also run a
freeware utility called Monolingual which will strip out the Intel and
G5 architectures from your OS, along with the languages you don't
need. It will save around a gig of disk space and let Tiger run much
more efficiently.

Go to a "big box" store (like Best Buy) where you can see dozens of

It sounds like the Cube is nicely upgraded, the weak link may be the

If yoi can find a used Sonnet 500 mHz for under $25 it might be
worthwhile. I know it doesn't sound like much of a spped bump but you
get a larger cache with the Sonnet hence better performance. Also, max
out the RAM to 1 GB. See if anyone has an ATTO SCSI card and a 15K

The easiest way is to put the "Eject" icon in your menubar, then you
can easily control the open/close/eject functions. Navigate to System

called Eject.menu; you will see an eject icon appear in your menubar.

It will work but you will need to unscrew the metal backplate in order
to make it fit in the Cube. If the 9000 Pro has a fan you might need
to replace the fan with a smaller fan. It will give you better video

Sometimes that is an early warning signal that a drive is failing. CCC

If the VRAM chips (there should be 4 of them on the fan side of the

it cannot be flashed for a Mac. If it looks like it may be compatible

I had the same problem when I first put 10.5 on my Cube. I had to
replace 2 of the 3 RAM sticks. They had never given trouble in 10.4
but 10.5 is apparrently much more memory intensive and sensitive. When
I ran Rember (freeware memory testing utility) it found the bad RAM.
After I replaced all 3 sticks with OWC 3 x 512 MB Leopard has run
flawlessly. I should mention my Cube has a Sonnet 1.2 GHz processor
and a GeForce 6200 video card. I don't think you'll be very happy with
10.5 on a stock Cube, Tiger will run much better.

The Mac Pro 1,1 has 32-bit EFI and will not boot into 64-bit mode. I
tried both of the references you cited several months ago and
eventually gave up. My 64-bit apps do run and the prevailing opinion
seems to be that the 32-bit EFI should be able to boot into the 64-bit
kernal but that would require a firmware update from Apple. It seems
Apple would prefer that I buy a new Mac Pro rather than update the one
I already own.

GeForce 6200 / 256 MB VRAM, AGP can handle it. Be careful to buy a
model that can be converted to a Mac ROM (like the -WANG version) or
check on the swap list, I've seen several for sale there over the past

It might not be a bad idea to wait until the next OS ("Lion") is
released and see which Mac Pros are supported. I paid $1000 for a nice
used one last year, 2 x 3.0 GHz Core2Duo processors, and found out
later that Apple does not support 64-bit processing in the early Mac
Pros. I'm more than a little ticked off that it won't 'unleash the
power of 64-bit computing' as Apple promoted with SL and that it
probably won't be able to go past SL when 10.7 is released next summer.

What video card is in there now? Look in Apple System Profiler under
Graphics, it is probably a GeForce 5200 with 64 MD VRAM. You will get
much better video from a card with 256 or 512 MB VRAM. Flashed PC
cards like the GeForce 6200 are generally much cheaper than OEM Mac
video cards.

An AIrport Extreme card, 4-8 GB RAM and a better video card would be
nice for Leopard. A GeForce 6200 or, better yet, a 7800 converted from
PC to Mac ROM are good options. My G5 is a DP 1.8 with 4 GB RAM and a
GeForce 7800GT, it is a great machine.

Try unplugging all the USB stuff. I eventually figured out that my

I've never had any trouble with any brand of hard drive in any of my
Macs. If the onboard controller supports large drives just about
anything up to 500 GB will work, on older G4s there is a 128 GB limit
(can be worked around in several ways, though). 120 GB hard drives
with 8MB cache / 7200 rpm are good and relatively cheap. CCC will make
the cloned system bootable.

Re: Digital Audio won't boot os9

2010-09-24 Thread dc
It boots from the CD so the problem is likely your hard drive. How is
your hard drive formatted? If you set it up with OS X you have to make
sure to install OS 9 drivers. You might need to reformat the hard
drive using that option. You probably don't need 200 GB for OS 9, you
caould partition the drive into 2 sections, 20 GB shouyld be enough
for OS 9 with lots of apps, the other 180 GB could be a backup for
your data or a clone of OS X for emergency startup.

Re: SATA Drives on PCI card will not mount in G5

2010-08-30 Thread dc
Part deux-
I pulled all three drives out and plugged them one by one into an
external drive enclosure. I hooked them up to my MacPro and used disk
utility to reformat each drive as MBR/MSDOS. Then I booted my MacPro
into Windows XP (bootcamp) and ran Sea Tools diagnostic utility. Each
drive passed all the tests. The MacPro didn't have any problems with
any of the drives in either Windows or Mac OS. And yet, when I put
them back into the G5 with the SeriTek controller card they do not
show up at all. Apple System Profiler shows the card in its PCI slot
and reports the proper firmware and driver installed. Where are the
drives?

Re: Change computer icon

2010-08-30 Thread dc
The icons are located in System -> Library -> CoreServices ->
CoreTypes.bundle -> (Show Package Contents) Contents -> Resources

You will see a number of .icns for various Mac models. There is a
generic com.apple.mac.icns that looks like an iMac but is actually a
monitor, that one often gets substituted if a specific icon is not
available. Also, for some reason, the iMac G4 15 is often substituted.
Figure out which icon shows up in your sidebar and change its name to
something else, or move it somewhere else. Then pick out one that
looks most like your computer (for example, in place of a TiBook 800
you might pick the ibook g4 or the macbook pro icon). Change the name
of that icon to the name of the one your system was using. Reboot and
enjoy.

SATA Drives on PCI card will not mount in G5

2010-08-26 Thread dc
I've tried everything I can think of. I have a PM G5 with 2 SATA
drives in the upper and lower bays and 3 additional drives in a Sonnet
Jive 5 bracket; the drives are cabled to a SATA PCI controller card
with SIL3124 chip. I have also tried 2 different Seritek IV4 cards.
The drives will not mount, they never show up in Finder, System
Profiler of Disk Utility.
I know the drives (Seagate 7200.10 500GB) are good. I have put each
one into the lower drive bay where they load up just fine. They each
passed the SMART tests, have been partitioned with 1 partition and are
formatted HFS extended. I cloned the system onto one of them and it
boots up normally as long as it is in the lower bay with it's direct
connection to the motherboard. When I move the connection to the PCI
controller card it doesn't show up.
I know the cards are good. The Seritek cards have run before in this
G5 and in a MDD G4. The cards show up in System Profiler, the firmware
is updated and the drivers are installed.
It's not a power issue. The drives get warm so I assume they're
spinning. I even hooked one up to and external power supply to be sure
it was getting enough power.
The SeaTools utility only runs in Windows so it can't help me check
the drives.
Maybe there is something I can do through Open Firmware to mount the
drives?

Correct, the G4 processor won't have a temperature sensor; newer hard
drives and video cards often do. If you want to use thermal paste you
will need to clean the CPU and heatsink. I usually start by scraping
with an old plastic credit card edge, then scrub with acetone (or
fingernail polish remover) on a cotton swab followed by ethanol or
rubbing alcohol. When you apply the new paste use a very small amount,
about the size of a grain of rice, and spread it thinly with a piece
of stiff, soft plastic. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the
CPU or the heatsink.

I just replaced a G5 case. Sweet Mother of Steve Jobs, who designed
these cases? Two things are apparent: 1) everything, down to the
fasteners, is first class and built to last, and 2) it better last
cause it's a beast to work on! I can swap out a G4 motherboard and
have it up and running in under an hour but this project took me the
better part of 2 days. Several years ago I bought a G5 with a mangled
case off the LEM Swap List, I got it running and then hit upon a great
solution for the ugly, damaged case- I bought a 28" monitor and set it
in front of the G5, problem solved! Didn't even need duct tape. A few
months later I purchased an empty case from the Swap List, which sat
in my parts closet a year or two. I finally got around to switching
over the mobo, power supply, fans, the whole works. It's up and
running after about 8 hours labor and an unproductive trip to several
hardware and auto parts stores looking for a 6" 2.5mm hex driver. The
specs: DP 1.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM (with copper heat spreaders), Airport
Extreme card, GeForce 7800 GS 256 MB (flashed pc) video card, Firmtek
SATA pci card with 4 internal ports, one patched to an eSATA port,
generic USB2 4-port card. There is a Sonnet Jive 5 with 3 WD 320 GB
SATA drives in a RAID 0 configuration which is giving me trouble, if I
don't get it running soon it will be the subject of my next post.

Sorry but that card is not a good choice for a Mac. This page has
pictures of compatible video cards:
http://themacelite.wikidot.com/ati-radeon
These cards are getting hard to find because pro flashers are buying
them up, flashing them and reselling them on eBay. IMO the best choice
for a Sawtooth is the XFX Geforce 6200 PV-T44A-WANG 256MB DDR2.
If you watch the LEM swap list you will see video cards come up for
sale every now and then; the prices are usually reasonable and they
are Mac compatible.

After yo flash the ROM you will need to tape over pins 3 & 11 (or cut
the traces) to make an 8x card run in a Sawtooth.

I'll speak to a couple of your questions, the ones I have experience
with.
2. You can put just about any IDE DVD drive in the beige, I have a
Pioneer DVR-109 in mine.
4. You will see a very large performance boost if you use a controller
card (either ATA, SCSI, or SATA) and put in a new hard drive, 7200 rpm
- 15,000 rpm with 8MB or 16 MB cache. It might be worth using the
built-in ethernet to free up a slot for a controller card, or looking
around for a combo ATA-USB Firewire PCI card.

Yes to both PCI and AGP. Use the utility from this site:
http://thomas.perrier.name/graphiccelerator.html
Now for the not-so-clear part of my answer... You need to have one of
the supported video cards listed on the Graphiccelerator website AND
you need to have a custom ROM file AND the model/manufacturer/revision
of the video card must match the ROM file AND you may need to modify
AGP pins 3 & 11. This page:
http://themacelite.wikidot.com/nvidia-geforce
has modified ROMs and photos of the specific video cards that can use
the ROMs.
IMO using a PC is more effective. A few years ago it was possible to
get lots of help with the process from various flashing forums but no
longer, most now seem to be using Intel Macs or Hacks and modding the
cards in newer, better ways.

If you are running Leopard the GeForce 6200 will cause a boot delay of
2 - 3 minutes (unless you flashed it with the modified ROM that
removes the temperature sensing function). But on the + side, once
booted you can monitor the GPU temp using a program like Temperature
Monitor; I don't think the Radeon 9550 has temp sensor capability. I
put up with the 6200's boot delay because I like to monitor
temperatures, heat can build up in Macs when you start adding
processor upgrades, RAM, better video cards, additional hard drives,
etc. If the 6200 is a fanless model you should look into putting a fan
on it, these are popular add-ons for the 6200:

May not work using a G4 then moving the drive to a beige, the OS will
install altivec on the G4 which the G3 cannot use. This usually means
the drive won't boot. I've never had success switching OSs between G3s
and G4s. Beige and Blue & White G3s can be swapped. But Manuel seems
to be up and running already with OS 9.2

There are PCI versions of the GeForce 5200, 5500 and 6200 that are PC
cards and can be converted to work on a Mac, or you can buy the
modified cards; you can find them on some popular auction sites or on
the LEM Swap list:

Bette hurry, $50 is a great price for this card!
A lot of the Radeon 7000s are flashed PC cards, that's the only way to
get a 64 MB VRAM 7000. They work fine is OS 9 - OS 9.1 and in all
versions of OS X. It's only 9.2 that has the extensions issue with the
7000.

My beige G3:
OWC G4 533 MHz, 768 MB RAM, 15K/16MB SCSI drive & ATTO PSC card,
GeForce 6200 /256 MB, Pioneer DVR-109, Sonnet USB & Firewire combo
card. I added a 40mm Silenex fan in place of the small speaker to

That's why I love it! My beige G3:

GeForce 6200 /256 MB, Pioneer DVR-109, Sonnet USB & Firewire combo

I've been running OS X 10.4./XPF for years; I use the machine on a
daily basis at work for email, word processing, internet, etc., mainly
for the "you can give me a Dell but you can't make me use it" factor.
It is truyly a handful as an upgrade project but the beige is built
like a tank and it may just run forever.

I have a number of upgraded beige G3s running Tiger with XPostFacto.
There are several things you can do to improve the performance.
First off, if you are using a Sonnet G4 500 MHz, moving the board
jumpers won't change the processor speed, Sonnet processors set the
speed to 500 no matter where the jumpers are placed.
A better hard drive will make a world of difference, I use 15,000 rpm/
16 MB SCSI drives and ATTO PCI SCSI cards. The cards are easy to find
and cheap, same with the SCSI drives now that so many people going
with SATA. An added bonus, you don't need to worry about the 8GB limit
when you use a controller card, your OS X partition can be any size
you like.
There are several video card options. The Radeon 7000* is one, Radeon
9000 or 9250 are better, GeForce 5200/5500 or 6200 are the best in my
opinion.
*if you go with the Radeon 7000 you are going to have trouble with
XPostFacto and OS 9.2.2. You need OS 9 for XPostFacto but the 7000
will only work with the extensions from 9.0 or 9.1, so either leave it
OS 9 or 9.1 or you can copy the 9.1 extensions and replace the 9.2.2
extension with the copies.
To use XPostFacto partition your hard drive with 3 partitions, one for
OS X, one for OS 9, and the 3rd for OS 9 that will be used by OS X for
Classic. All these tips can still be found on the XPostFacto page.
There is not much activity on the XPF forum anymore, most other Mac
users have moved beyond beige.

1. Make sure you have an OS 9 system installation disk and not an
update disk.
2. Use compressed air or nitrogen to blow out the CD tray, sometimes
they get dirt & dust inside and don't work perfectly; since you can
mount and browse the CD this might not be your problem but it's easy
to do.
3. Lift off the top cover and see if the CD-ROM is an Apple CD-ROM,

If it's the power supply or logic board you might be better off $$
$wise buying a working Quicksilver (there's a nice one on the Swap

selling or saving the working spare parts. That way you don't have to

Since all three printers have drivers for 10.4 and work on other Macs
it seems as if the problem is in the iMac G5. After you install the
drivers you should be able to find them manually in System\Library
\Extensions or in Library\Printers. Things to try include
1) a different USB port
2) a different USB cable
3) repairing permissions, then shutdown and start up with a printer
attached and turned on
4) use a utility program like Xupport to force optimization, then a
restart will be required

Did you follow these steps?
1. Double-click the installer icon on your desktop.
2. Accept the license agreement.
3. Cancel the Printer Selection screen. If you are unable to cancel
this screen, force quit it (command + option + escape).
4. If a Printer Setup is not complete message appears, click OK.
5. Go to System Preferences, Print and Fax, Set Up Printers.
6. When you see a message stating You have no printers available,
click Add, then select your printer. Note: If your printer is attached
via USB, it may not appear until you have selected USB from the pull-
down menu (I think that note is for Panther only).
7. It should find a driver called "Lexcmark All-in-One if you give it
a few moments to search.

I would remove the 2 ATA drives to reduce heat (your PSU can probably
handle 4 internal drives). Consider 2 partitions on the new drive, one
for a bootable cloned system and a larger one for backups, data, etc.
If you are no longer using SCSI devices you could pull the old Adeptec
card. Be careful with the external firewire drives, if the Mac has to
supply them along with several internal drives there might be PSU
issues.

Re: Best OS for MDD

You've got lots of company, Tiger's a good system for older Macs, but
Leo has 2 substantial improvements. Time Machine is the most obvious,
keeping things backed up is an important task. Sometimes our old Macs
run so well for so long that we neglect backups, then a hard drive
fails and The second is less obvious, it's the way Leo runs
Software Update. Many people have screwed up their Tiger OS by running
something while Software Update is optimizing the system, leading to
an unbootable OS. Leo shuts down all other running processes when
running a system update that requires optimizing, it's Apple's answer
to the large number of complaints from 10.4 users.
