Disappeared HDs
I have a old Intel PowerMac with os 10.11. It wasn't compatible with my old Brother HL-1440 printer. I got around this problem by creating a second HD with snow leopard on it. I am able to print with this printer from snow leopard. I installed some updates to this drive and now it has disappeared. When this thing is in my computer it won't boot from it, the or os 10.11 or from an Apple Install CD. It is unusable. How do I get this thing zeroed out so I can get it to work as an HD? Replacement for Appleworks 6.0 DB
I'm trying to find a replacement DB that will open my old Appleworks DB files. I've tried Microsoft Office and apparently that doesn't have DB anymore. I've tried open office and I can't get it to open my old stuff. I've looked into Filemaker and that seems to be around $40 on eBay and $450 on Amazon. I'm working on a book and a DB file would be nice to manage stuff like I used to. Password protection
Recently I activated the sign-in screen on my computer because I had guests staying at my house. Now they have left and I don't need it, but I can't figure out how to deactivate it and it is causing problem preventing me from using my TIVO from playing YouTube videos on my 55 inch TV. How do I get control of the permissions on my Intel Mac Pro?
I bought a 2006 Intel Mac Pro that sort of works. The fun started when I tried to use the Migration Manager to transfer my old files from my G5 to the Intel. I got an error telling me that I needed to upgrade the G5 to a newer operating system in order to that to work. The G5 is already maxed out so that wasn't possible. I got around this by connecting the boot drive from the G5 in the Intel machine. Migration manager recognized it then but most of the files from the G5 were not useable on the Intel because the permissions were screwed up plus my ancient HL-1440 would not work and the Intel would not recognize newer drivers for it. The only user available on the Intel is the system administrator, but it won't let me change any permissions for the other dimmed users or any non administrator files. This is territory I am not confident screwing with. I tried working around this by getting another Sata drive and installing 10.6.3. This worked in recognizing the HL-1440 but none of the files from 10.6.3 work with the main boot drive and none of the files from the boot drive will work with 10.6.3 because because of the permissions. I've tried messing with the terminal, but I really don't know what I'm doing. It would be nice to change all the permissions so the system administrator could have access to all the files on this computer and I don't have to deal with this multiple personality disorder. Getting the thing down to schizophrenia would be an improvement. I'm pretty sure the Intel is running El Capitan. This allows it to communicate with my iPhone 8+. I think something may have been patched the person who sold it. For instance when I try to pull up "About this Mac" nothing comes up. I had to get this thing because my Digital Audio G4 blew up. Then my G5 blew up, so this is my 3rd computer in a year. Any ideas would help. Thanks. Schizophrenia
I've asked for help before on my newer intel machine on which no printer driver works with El Capitan for my Brother HL-1440 printer. You guys have sent me suggestions and I thank you and none of them work. None of the printer drivers work. Any instructions to mess around in Terminal don't work. I've downloaded step by step instructions for doing things in Terminal and those don't work either. Finally, I did buy version of 10.6 Mac OS and a new hard drive and installed it. I successfully installed the HL-1440 driver and it works, however neither system works with each other. I can't print any files from El Capitan. I don't have permissions. I screw around with permissions like running Hard Drive utility and nothing changes. Screwing around with the permissions panel in Info doesn't change anything. I see there is a master password in Terminal. I have never messed with that. I don't know what it does. I have a bunch of files I need to print. I'm not getting anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Migration to Intel
I think the reason nothing is working is because I put the boot drive from my g5 into intel so I could do the migration. I think it got crossed somehow. Everything sort of works, but not like it should. I have a 10.5 install DVD and I'm going to try installing that on a new clean hard drive. Both times I've messed with the terminal it hasn't worked. I tried the directions to add a CUPS printer I found online, and then the other fix for the screwed up permissions. I'm on to plan C. Migration to Intel
My G5 recently died. I bought and ancient intel. I tried using the Migration Assistant to migrate from the G5. I kept getting and error that the G5, running 10.5.8 I think, the most advanced system X needed to be upgraded. Obviously not being possible I took the G5 drives and put them in the Intel and I was able to migrate that way. I still have problems with permissions. For instance the Intel won't let me into my music folder telling me I don't have permission. I'm fairly sure I'm using the system administrator account so I don't get it. There are other users in the user section of the system preferences but they are dimmed. Another problem is with my ancient Brother HL-1440 printer. It's extinct but it still works fine except not with this newer computer. I downloaded something called a CUPS driver and the directions. I enter the first command in Terminal and then it goes nowhere. There are supposed to be printer choices depending on the drivers installed. There are none. According to the documentation this drive is supposed to work with this computer and this OS and this printer. There error I get is there is no printer connected. I also have and Epson V300 scanner which is a nice scanner. It has control buttons one of which is the power on/off and another which automatically scans PDFs. That was really handy. Naturally this doesn't work now. I got the latest driver for it and the I have to use the software in a work around and the first page is always more or less square and every other page afterward is crooked no matter what I do. My late Father did a genealogical study of our family and I'm trying to scan the damn thing. There are over 150 pages and this is not working. Also this thing is running El Capitan. This is one of the early PowerMac how advanced system software should I upgrade it to. This is a legacy computer and I am used to running legacy software and I don't want to get things out of whack. My favorite computer was Digital Audio G4 which died earlier this year there was limited software for that thing, but keeping it contemporaneous seems to work. Re: My g5 won’t boot
I’ll try that. It won’t respond to the keyboard. I started it up and it chimed. I thought it was working. It won’t chime since. When I had it open I took the plastic shroud out and immediately the fans went up to full power and a red led light came on. I think I need to reseat the ram and whatever. I think this thing was spinning up the fans for some reason which caused me to shut down the computer. My g5 won’t boot
Some progress. I swapped 3.6 batteries. I got it to chime and PR. It booted up. I put a bootable dvd drive genius in the optical. I rebooted, no chime, I could hear the voicing coil searching a few times, then it spun up and stopped. It just sits there with the power on doing nothing. I think it would boot if I could get the dvd out of the optical. I normally don’t shut this thing off, I just let it sleep on the ups. -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I put my g5 to sleep. After a couple of minutes the fans came on real loud. I shut it down and turned it back on. It booted up then, but I put it asleep again and it wouldn’t wake up. Re: My DA G4 died.
I was able to put the boot drive from the G4 into an enclosure and copy the data onto the boot drive of my dual G5. I was able to save my files. The chicklet keyboard has something wrong with it. The trackball works connected through it but sometimes the keyboard itself is spurious and sometimes dead. I am currently using a different keyboard. Out of curiosity I was looking at microsoft usb keyboards for cheap at office max/depot whatever it is. I would think this would work on a mac but it doesn't say on the box. Is this a possibility? Also I was checking specs between the G4 and my old Umax S900 and they both use PCI cards. Would the Sonnet ATA133 work in the S900. It currently has a Sonnet ATA100 and use the bigger drives from the G4 in the S900? I know OSX would totally screw up the S900 because I tried booting and OSX CD with it once. Big mistake. My DA G4 died.
Monday my DA G4 died. I had it on an APC 650 UPS. I woke up and alarm was going off and the green light was flashing. I turned off the UPS and turned it back on. At that moment I heard sound somewhere between a zap and a pop. My DA G4 was nonfunctional. A couple of years ago I got a power surge that blew out the power supply, the ATA133 card, the controller boards on the hard drives, the USB PCI card and the USB hub. I replaced all of that and got this computer working again. I put it on an UPS. I don't understand why this happened. The thing should have been protected. None of the other computer gear I've got, cable modem, router, TiVos or anything else on my network was damaged. My 55 inch tv is fine. I don't get it. This computer was pushed nearly as far as you can push a G4. It had a 1.6 GHz processor upgrade. It had a 300 and 500 gig hard drive. 1.5 gigs of ram. It was old but it had lots of software that isn't replaceable for less than a few thousand dollars. I ordered a usb rack drive so I can salvage files from the HDs. The controller boards might be shot. I've replaced those before. There is no way of telling what the damage is. I am running a G5 which has taken most of the week to get back to where I nearly was. I have been having a recurring problem with it. Sometimes when it boots up it won't recognize any input from the keyboard. You type and nothing happens. Sometimes the trackball doesn't work either. Tonight I got my Epson 600 scanner working. Unfortunately, the keyboard quit working. I powered off and rebooted twice to no avail. I finally swapped the keyboard cord to another spot on the usb hub and it started working. Any suggestions on any of this might be useful. Re: Network Troubles
I found a page at XLR8 your Mac where users reported dealing with non apple pci gigabit cards. It turns out a lot of them, or at least more than enough are compatible with 10.4x without any special drivers. I got a used one coming from eBay. I was looking at my hard drives and they are something like 80% full. I have 120GB and 320GB. I'm thinking about replacing the 120 with a 500 and I am also looking for an i5 or i7 Macbook, 27 imac or a Mac Pro. When I run my DA G4 with contemporaneous software, from the early 2000s it does well. If I run newer stuff it gags. Re: Network Troubles
You guys have been telling me that DA G4 is probably the slowest thing on my network. I looked up the specs and the ethernet port is 10T, 100T, 1000T. I am pretty sure that means gigabyte. I have been looking at PCI cards and there don't seem to be any listed G4 Mac compatible gigabit cards listing on eBay. I saw a PCI-X one from a G5 but I don't think that will work. I looked at airport cards and I do have two wireless networks available but I only use them for my phone. I probably just ought to get an intel that isn't too old or expensive. Network Troubles
I have been having trouble with my network. It runs really slow. I have the wep enabled on my router which it a Netgear WNDR 3700v4. I know mostly nothing about this. I did find the network logs and noticed my system is routinely under land attack, whatever that is. WD My Book 2TB won't play nice
I tried to expand my TiVo. I got a 2TB WD My Book drive which turned out to be USB 3.0. It won't work with my TiVo Premire. As the TiVo wants an eSata drive. I have had the model number for this eSata drive for quite some time, but when I went to buy it Amazon notified me there was a newer model a 2TB drive for the same price. So I bought it. It won't work with my TiVo so I moved to plan B which was to use it with my DA G4. In futzing around with it I found it had the windows something or other file system on it. So I reformatted it, but it won't make nice with the G4 either as it messes up the sleep mode and it won't wake up and failing waking up it won't find a boot drive on reboot. For the longest time my computer won't shut down or reboot from the Apple menu and I've pretty much given up trying that so if I want to reboot or shut down I use the buttons on the front of the computer. I'm pretty much thinking I will have to let this My Book drive sit until I get an Intel Mac, however, I noticed when I formatted this thing there were 4 different options to format this drive for a Mac using Disk Utility. Does this make a difference or is it as I suspect the ongoing boot issue with the USB port? Re: Giant Sata HD bolluxes up my DA G4
I've done more testing. This new drive just sits in the computer dumb and gives no signal that it's there. Neither my DA G4 or my G5 register it. It's nothing. I tried running Drive Genius and it doesn't find anything there. I put the 1TB Seagate in my G4 again and zapped the Pram a couple of times before starting up. This time it came up and I didn't get a Kernel Panic. I was able to copy 280GB of files to it. I'm going to put it back in the G5. This new drive is going back. Re: Giant Sata HD bolluxes up my DA G4
I tried swapping 1TB seagate from my G5 into my DA G4 and the new drive into the G5. The new drive would spin in the G5 and would not come up under Disk Utility. The Seagate came up in the G4 and after about a minute the G4 had a kernel panic. I'm sending the new drive back. Weak link may be the sata pata adapter, but that would not explain why the G5 couldn't see it. Thanks to everybody, I think I'm going to get an intel Mac, one that can play with my iPhone 5c. Does anyone use an iPhone 5c with a G4 or a G5 or am I stuck with iCloud?
I was recently given an iPhone 5c. I know in order to use iTunes with this thing you have to have an intel running iTunes 11 or something like that. I got my G5 up to iTunes 7.6 and it recognizes that an iphone is connected, but can't do anything with it and my G4 is just dumb. I got the iphone on my wifi and it can read my gmail. NSA FBI warning Your browser had been locked
Hello, Somehow I got redirected to some website with this header, I think its ransomware. As soon as it opened I went to force quit and quit TenFourFox 31.2.0 and then shut down my DA G4. A couple of hours later I restarted everything and launched Ten4 and this site came up immediately. I opened another tab and closed the "NSA FBI" thing that claims to monitoring all of my illegal activities whatever those might be. I don't thing this is much of a threat unless you click on this thing. I didn't have much trouble bypassing it. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this garbage or knows anything about it. What is it supposed to be able to do. Hello, I have an extremely important file that I need to send to someone. I've never bothered with encryption because I've never had to send anything this important before. This is not financial stuff, it is a PDF that will probably be read on a Kindle or a PC or possibly a smart phone. In case you are wondering it is a novel. I don't know if the destination makes a difference, I have the option of sending it to a gmail account, a company email account or some other account this person has. >From what I understand you can scramble a file and attach it to an email and on arrival the person uses a key and unlocks it. Re: DA G4 will not shut down
I have made some progress on the DA G4. I replaced the battery and zapped the pram which made no difference. I disconnected all usb devices except the keyboard and a Logitech trackball and tried shutting down which also made no difference. The DA G4 quits the finder and the desktop picture remains and it just hangs, which is what has been doing whenever I try to quit. I have a DA G4 running 10.4.11. It has a 1.6 MHz PPC processor. I also have a GoFlex Nas drive which might be causing the problem. I tried creating a new user, but that doesn't come up when it boots up. It does on my G5, but I am the only person that uses this thing and i don't have much experience logging on with other users. I downloaded AppleJack but I haven't installed it. Terminal stuff makes me nervous. I have a 5 port Usb 2.0 card in it. I have a powered 2.0 hub and a 2.0 scanner and Brother HL-1440 printer and another 500mg GoFlex portable drive which is different from the Nas drive. I tried powering the portable GoFlex drive through the hub and it wouldn't go so I plugged it back into the USB card. Normally, I leave the GoFlex cradle plugged into the USB card but I leave the drive out because I only use it for backup. Nevertheless, with no USB stuff connected except the keyboard and the trackball into the stock G4 USB port it wouldn't shut down. So, progress amounts to eliminating a bunch of stuff and the computer still won't shut down. Rarely, something happens with the USB something and the computer will quit all by itself. This usually, involves waking and it quits. When this happens the clock and date get screwed up, but because it's set to look up the date and time it fixes itself within a minute or two, but it does mean it needed a new battery. Now its got one. If anyone has ideas it would be helpful. Your Browser has been locked up! Send $300 to...
I was surfing the web last week and my browser locked up and this popup appeared. These clowns wanted $300. Earlier that day I had seen a Tekzilla that mentioned something about Ransomware. According to what Tekzilla described this is where a program gets installed on your machine where everything gets password encrypted and the perpetrators won't unencrypt your system without you forking over $300. I went to force quit and quit TenFourFox. Then I shut down my machine and unplugged my router from the cable modem. I then powered up my machine and backed up my document folder and then I reconnected to my cable modem and changed some passwords. I really haven't noticed anything unusual other than I was playing Master of Orion under system 9 and and somehow the mouse button got stuck wide open. My system still doesn't like Flash much and Javascript seems to make it wheeze. I thought any virus or trojan wouldn't be able to deal with a DA G4 as they are elderly and nearly extinct. I never considered there would be any viable threat to a machine like this. I used to run Norton Antivirus a long time ago, I think it was on my SuperMac S900. I don't think I've ever run any antivirus on this G4. Is there antivirus available for for a PowerPC nowadays? Is this a real threat? Re: Dead Seagate
If worse comes to worse sometimes the thing that has failed is the controller board on the hard drive itself. A couple of years ago I had a power surge that destroyed a lot of stuff including my ata133 controller and the hard drive connected to it. I had to buy and new ata 133 card and as it turned out the controller board on the hard drive itself was the only thing bad with the drive. I wasn't sure the controller board on the Hard Drive was bad but I rolled the dice and found a guy on ebay that buys old hard drives and resells the controller boards to people who have dead hard drives. It worked. I saved the drive and was able to copy all the data onto another hard drive including my 80GB iTunes collection. I thought there might be some life in the drive when I thought I heard a faint ticking noise, and I mean really faint. The replacement board cost me $40 (returning customers get a $5 discount). These controller boards have all sorts of model numbers drive names, batch numbers and manufacture dates that have to match exactly for the board to work. They provide the special screwdriver required. I would try googling hard drive controller board and your manufacturer. This is usually where this starts. It doesn't seem to make much difference how many tabs are open but it slows the system down so I shut them down as fast as possible and try to get to as few tabs as I can. I try not to run videos. There is a flag in TenFourFox involving Flash, I think and i turned that either on or off from the default position so it can run Flash. There doesn't seem to be a problem when I go to youtube. Videos from CNN or Fox run slowly and gum up everything, so I stay away from those. The more this goes on the slower this Browser runs. It will quit suddenly for no apparent reason. Re: Has this ever happened to you?
I got the DVD drive out of my computer. I gave up holding the whole computer at various angles and shaking it to get the cd-rom out of it. Roughly, a little over half of the cd-rom has fallen out of it. The mechanism in the DVD drive seems to be jammed and only little bits fall out now. I am seriously considering using my ship vac next, although the last time I used my shop vac on my computer I had to buy a new keyboard. I think this drive is most likely destroyed. The thing that impressed me the most is when it came apart the clip on drive door popped open and shot out the the center button bar and it flew half way across the room If you will recall, G4's have a door covering their optical drives and the button is in the center of the door and there is a plastic bar that extends over to the right where the actual button is on a CD drive to open it. It might look nice, but it's lame, if you ask me. This bar shot out of my computer. Disk read error. Maybe Apple's later system software has a very high level of copy protection that results the disk blowing up and jamming up your optical drive. That was my most favorite game ever. I guess I should quit screwing around. Has this ever happened to you?
I was playing my favorite game, Master of Orion II. Then I quit the game and ejected the CD and noticed there was a crack in the inner ring. So I decided it might be a good time to make a backup copy of this CD, if it were possible. I tried Disk Utility first and thought it might be better to use Toast 9.0. I started running the program and suddenly the plastic CD button goober shot out of the mirror door. I got a cryptic "disc has read errors" message. I tried ejecting the disc both using eject button on the keyboard and the eject button on the front of the drive, which by the way is a Samsung from other world. None of this worked. The drive wouldn't open. I tried a paper clip and that wouldn't work. I tried rebooting the machine and that didn't help. I gave up and shut the machine down and pried the drive open. The CD was in chunks. It literally exploded in the the drive. I have probably 40% of it out of the drive in six pieces. I've never heard of this happening. I loved that game. This sucks. Now I don't have any excuses to switch over to my G5, no even lame ones. Transition Manager
I have acquired a G5. In reading about it I have stumbled onto something called Transition Manager. From what I understand this program is supposed to transfer all of your settings from your old Mac to your new Mac. Supposedly, it will transfer programs, too. Does anyone have experience with this? I have some software that came installed on my old DA G4 that I don't have the original discs. I think they are all OS X Power PC software. Will these transfer to the G5? I have also become aware of a patch that will modify the Rom on a G% so it will run OS 9. Does anyone know anything about this. Is this worth messing with? Finally, I bought an UPS, and happily it has already paid for itself. I had one of those winking on an off power surges like the one that blew out the power supply to my DA G4 last year. My DA went through this untouched. However, the G5 seems to suck too much power for this thing. It came with an 80gig HD and it seemed to run OK. I got a 400gig HD for it and once I tried doing more involved stuff with it the UPS shut down. The UPS isn't all that big, 425 watts, I think. How big an UPS do I need need for the G5 and a 23 inch flatscreen? Reformatting a Maxtor 160 gig disk
Something strange is going on here. Ever since my power surge disaster last year I have had trouble with my 300gig HD. The circuit board was fried on it and I bought a replacement and have been using it. I saved all the data on it to a Go drive and I know I should replace the drive but I have been using it anyway. I thought there was something wrong with the drive because every time I have used Disk Utility or Drive Genius on it chokes with some really screwy out of range error and says repair failed. I just thought there was something wrong due to the controller board on the HD which was a Seagate. I decided to stop messing around with this drive and copy all the data to a 160 Maxtor. I formatted this drive on a normal ATA 100 bus in my DA G4 so only 128 gigs shows up, but I figured I would put this drive on Sonnet Tempo 133 card and format it to whatever 160 gigs of HD will turn out. The problem is that the drive shows up as a Maxtor 128gigs. There is no extra unformatted space. I'm thinking the problem is the Sonnet Tempo 133 card. I don't know what the deal is with it. In about this Mac this PCI card comes up as pci1033,e0 in slot 4 which I am guessing is either my USB 2.0 card and slot 5 is PCD20269 then is says ata. This is confusing me. There is something about my system that is not seeing these bigger hard drives beyond 128 gigs. The Sonnet ATA 133 card is different than the one that blew up in the power surge. This card is brown and my original old card was green. I don't know what that means, except that the green card could see the bigger drives. I don't know what to do. Verify/Repair Fail, Drive Genius also Fails
I decided to do routine maintenance on my system. One of the drives failed. It failed with both Disk Utility and Drive Genius. I think I know why. This drive was one of the drives that was damaged during my power surge. I replaced the boot drive and bought controller boards for this drive and the original boot. I copied the boot drive to the new boot drive and that has worked fine. This drive is a data drive with mostly my iTunes files on it. I replaced the controller board and put this drive back in the system, mainly because I couldn't afford a new drive and I have a backup of these files on a Go Drive. This is a 300GB drive. Reading Drive Genius shows this thing to have screwed up block allocation. I think it says it has 127GB and change capacity. Command I shows 279.34GB, 174.88GB available and 104.45GB used. I suspect the reason for the discrepancy is that I have the wrong controller board. I think I will have to break down and buy a replacement drive. I don't want to spend the money. I bought a new tempo card and I found a seller on eBay that sells used circuit boards for hard drives for 39.99 a piece. Fortunately, the power surge only fried the circuit board and I was able to find replacement boards for both drives. Replacing the circuit boards is very easy. There are six screws that bolt them to the hard drive. The seller provides a little torx screwdriver. So the mechanically inclined part mostly requires operating a srcewdriver and not loosing the screws. I assume you know how to futz around inside your computer and swap hard drives. Once the circuit board is swapped I put the dead HD in a firewire enclosure and used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the data to a new hard drive. The involved part is matching the model number, batch number, the date, etc, and the ten digit number on the big controller chip. Once you have matches in all the categories the seller checks to see if they have a matching board. If you're lucky and have the 39.99 your problem may be solved. I don't have the sellers site available at the moment, but I could look for it if you want. RE: New Addition For My Tool Box
I went on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters when I was a kid. The outfitter was selling quart cans of dehydrated water. All you had to do was pour the contents of the can into a container and add a quart of water. Just the sort of compact provision you need for a canoe trip. SIIG Ultra ATA-133 Failure
I discovered why my SIIG Ultra ATA-133 card quit working. I picked up the computer it was formerly in to move it and head something rolling around. At first I thought it was a loose screw. I found a little cylinder rolling around. It was about a half inch long and a quarter inch in diameter. I think it is a capacitor. At first I thought something had fallen off this computer but I looked at the SIIG card and there is a void where this thing plugs into. I am not sure how it is supposed to be aligned. It has a stripe down one side and all the other capacitors are facing the same way. I am wondering if it is worth trying to solder this back on. I don't know if my opinion of this card is improved now that I know that something has fallen off of it and that is the most likely reason it doesn't work and it's not really a piece of crap. Motherboard and Memory Questions on recovered DA
I was able to get my DA G4 operational again by replacing the power supply. I have noticed something odd. The machine has all its memory slots filled with 512 sticks. I am 99% sure they are the original sticks from the machine from before the power outage. I tested them in another machine and they all tested out OK. Now with these sticks back in the DA About This Mac is showing only one GB of memory when there are 1.5 GB installed and before the power outage it showed 1.5 GB. About this Mac shows each slot as: DIMM0/J21: Size: Empty Type: Empty Speed:Empty Status: Empty DIMM1/J22: Size: 512 MB Type: SDRAM Speed:PC100-322S Status: OK DIMM2/J23: Size: 512 MB Type: SDRAM Speed:PC133-333 Status: OK DIMM3/J24: Size: Empty Type: Empty Speed:Empty Status: Empty The machine only has three slots and they are all filled. Part of the problem is I never checked this far into this before this problem so I can't say for certain what has changed other than the machine always showed 1.5GB. I thought the 133Mhz machine couldn't use, if I am reading this correctly, PC-100 ram. Something similar to this happened on the Dual Processor G4 I used for a couple of days before it died. It had 2GB of ram. When I checked it it showed only 1.5 GB. As I used it I would occasionally come across a "Memory Failure" statement or it would say memory failed. It wasn't a system error. I can't say what I was doing when I came across this statement. Anyway, a day or two later the Dual Processor G4 quit working. The power light would come on but It wouldn't boot. This machine had a broken USB port that some idiot broke at work. I am thinking maybe this is what killed the Dual Processor. I can't say for sure, but I am guessing that the motherboard in the Dual Processor is dead. I tried all this ram in a third machine and It liked all of it. It handled the 2GB from the Dual Processor and the 1.5GB from the DA. I thought I was very careful to keep these sticks straight and together, but it is possible I could have mixed them. I don't think so. What could be going on here? I am I looking at a possible motherboard failure in the DA? It doesn't look like it would be very hard to change. I thought about getting another motherboard for the Dual Processor, but even the used ones a expensive. Success! Victory!
I have just successfully cloned my boot drive that was destroyed two weeks ago Monday to a new HD. This was one of the easiest fixes I have ever done. I got a new HD controller card for the burned out drive from a guy in British Columbia who sells these on eBay. I put the repaired drive into a Firewire enclosure and copied it using Carbon Copy Cloner. The guy in BC sends a little torx screwdriver with the controller board, although I didn't need it. There are six screws that have to be removed (this is a Seagate drive). Remove the old controller and screw in the new one. The only problems I had involved the SIIG Ultra-133 controller card. This thing is almost totally useless. I tried booting up with the regular boot drive connected to the motherboard controller and the recovered drive and the new drive connected to the SIIG. After that everything I tried anything involving the SIIG shortly resulted in a kernel panic. At the moment I have nothing connected to the SIIG and its behaving itself. It's back to its old ways. I first bought that thing and all it did was kernel panic. That is why I got the Sonnet Tempo Ultra-133 ATA controller card which is excellent and has always worked flawlessly Oh well, I was able to copy my iTunes library to it. I don't know what gives, but if you have the opportunity to get one of these cards you should pass. On my recently deceased DA G4 I had a separate partition for OS 9. When you format the HD for OS X I'm pretty sure it will ask you if you want to install the OS 9 driver. If you want to run OS 9 this is required. I don't think that applies here, though. For a long time I would have problems while running under OS 9. I thought I was running OS 9.2.2 which Apple says is required to run under OS X. I was actually running OS 9.2.1. When I upgraded to OS 9.2.2 the problems went away. I don't think that is your problem either. Can you boot anything from the CD drive? I also have an OS 9.1 install disk and I never had a problem booting it either holding down the "C" key or selecting it under startup drive. It's possible, but unlikely that you could have a corrupted PRAM. You could try holding the command and P and R keys on boot up and let it klorg away three or four times and the let it boot up. But I doubt that that is the problem either. 22 pin power supply
I think I have found a source for a replacement power supply. Does 22 pin mean the number of wires that comes off the power supply? I've tested my Ram
I've tested my Ram from both dead computers and it's OK according to Tech Tool Deluxe. I moved the 2 gigs of ram from my dead dualie into this pokey 400mhz 100mhz bus G4. I tested the ram from the dead DA in this computer. It's all OK. I can't say what the extent of the damage to the DA is beyond the dead power supply. I have no idea why the dualie won't boot. I've ordered a bunch of parts and if it works I should be able to recover the data from the dead HD for less than $90. What would cause this dual processor not to boot? The ram is OK, the two HDs are running in this computer as I type. What gives? Weighing costs a used G5 looks like an option. The only bad things I've heard about them are the ones with liquid cooled processors leak and corrode. Which models are liquid cooled? The dual core ones? I want to know what to stay away from. My DA G4 is Deceased and now my Dual Processor is on strike
What a difference a day makes. I powered down my Dual processor G4 very early this morning. When I turned it on this morning the pilot light came on and nothing much happened except the klorg noise. Anyway it won't boot. Two screws, unplug everything, put it into the next "to the dump" computer. Two screws, plug everything in and now its going in a 400Mhz whatever it is with a gig of ram. If this happens again I still have two more "to the dump" computers left. When I was working with the dual processor last night it gave me some sort of warning about bad memory. I am thinking this is why it won't boot. Before this happened I checked out all of my G4's. They all have different power supplies than the DA. They each have two power plugs on the back, and innie and an outie. The DA just has one. I am surmising that this is one od the differences between 100 and 133 Mhz machines. Is it safe to say the 133mhz ram and 100mhz ram don't mix? I have ordered almost everything I need to recover the data on the boot drive of the DA. It was killed by a power surge not a crashed head. My DA G4 is Deceased
SW Michigan got hit by a snow and freezing rainstorm Sunday. My power went out and the next afternoon when it came back on my DA G4 would do nothing when you press the power button. I am currently running one of my "to the dump" computers, a dual processor something or other. I was able to test several of the components from the DA in this Dualie. First of all both HDs both Seagate Barracuda 7200 ATA Ultra's are dead. I tested both of them on a firewire case. When powered up and you hold them to your ear I can hear a very faint clicking, much fainter than on normal power up. I found a seller on eBay that sells circuit boards for these things. It looks like you need to match the batch numbers on the big chips to my drive and have a torx screwdriver and you can swap out the circuit board and copy the data onto another drive. Does anyone have experience with this? Is there any soldering involved? I've used CCC to copy drives before and I have another program that I have used before. I don't think copying the drive will be a problem. The seller wants $39 for these circuit boards. I made a copy of each of these drive to a Seagate 500GB pocket drive last summer. I am currently copying my iTunes files to a drive in this dualie. This is slow. The dualie only has one good usb port and the keyboard is plugged into, so this little usb pocket drive is plugged into the second port on the keyboard. According to the progress bar this has another 13 hours to go. I started yesterday morning. It said 31 hours when I started. I thought usb was faster than that, we are talking 80GB here. I tested the FW800/USB2.0 card in the dualie. When I did it would power on and not boot. The dualie has a 100Mhz MB and the DA had a 133Mhz MB. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be a problem. My conclusion is that the FW/USB card is kaput as well. I haven't tested the USB 2.0 hub. Seeing as how the card it was connected to is most likely fried and my only usb ports are occupied for the foreseeable future, whatever. I am not using my 2.0 keyboard and I will test it with the hub. I am concerned that it might be bad. So far, as near as I can tell the things that are definitely fried are the power supply, the Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA-133 card, the FW/USB card and both HDs. I still have 3 to the dump G4's. I was thinking about swapping out the power supply from one of them to test the DA to see if it is completely dead. I have a couple of questions. First, the DA has a 133mhz MB and I am not sure about the other G4's, I know they came in both 100 and 133 flavors. Do they require different power supplies or are they swappable? Second, how involved is swapping the power supply? Third, I've noticed that some of the power supplies plug into the center and the others plug into the right side. How important is this? Thanks, If you want to email me off list, that's fine. USB Follies
I am having strange USB goings on. First the minor thing. I have an iMic plugged into the standard USB port on my DA and a stereo. When I shut my stereo off my DA wakes up out of sleep. I guess this probably has something to do with the DA being wired to use a keyboard with a power key. This is no big deal. I also have a Firewire 800/ USB 2.0 card with two ports of each type. I have a USB 2.0 hub plugged into that. I have an Epson scanner that isn't recognized unless it's plugged in directly to the other USB 2.0 port. I recently bought an Apple brand USB 2.0 keyboard which I plugged into the hub. It works okay unless... I plug my digital camera into either the USB hub or the second USB port on the keyboard, then the cursor locks up. The keyboard might be locked up, too, anyway, I have to restart when this happens. The USB 2.0 is from Hong Kong out of eBay. I think I should have got a USB 2.0 card with more ports on it. Random Kernel Panics
In the past two months I've gotten 4 kernel panics. The first one I couldn't say what I was doing when it happened. The second and third happened when i was launching an old game and OS9, first changing the monitor resolution and then launching the old game. It happened twice in a row, when it would never happen before. The latest instance when I was running Firefox and looking at a couple of web pages. I would say these are pretty much random. I've run this game since the two kernel panics without a problem. This is am DAG4 with 1.6ghz processor upgrade, 1.5gigs of ram, OSX 1.4.11. This just started happening in the past couple of months. RJ 45 Aggravation Update
I finally got this work. Why this didn't work the first time or any of the other times, I don't know. Instead of cutting across cable with a utility knife I cut the insulation parallel with scissors and then cut the insulation away without taking a chance with scoring the individual wires. Then I made sure I did the wires a pair at a time, brown, orange, green and blue. The only problem I have is the line going to my TIVO. When I did the test #7 and 8 were dead. I was going to quit with the whole thing but I plugged the line into the TIVO and the pilot light on the adapter came on. The TIVO is back on the internet and is fully functional. Beats me. How many of the pairs does RJ 45 use? Anyway, the installation looks neat. The other main line I use works with all four pairs like its supposed to. RJ45 Aggravations
I use the B setup. I always thought you were supposed the B setup for the straight through cables and one end A and the other B for a cross over cable. My problem is with the connections. I clip the wires down and from what I understand when you get a click and the excess wire falls off you have your connection. I have a little circuit tester which tests each pair in sequence. 1&2, 3&6, 4&5, and 7&8. If the little lights come on in sequence the cable is good. If they are not in sequence its wired wrong. If one or more of the lights doesn't come on there is not connection. My problem is the most I can get is three of the pairs. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The wall connectors are a lot harder to get to work than male connectors. I've gone through an entire package of ten of these connectors and I can't get any of them to work. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I don't know if this counts as off topic or not. I just wasted 2 hours and a package of RJ45 ethernet wall plugs. I couldn't get any of them to work. The existing network used to work, but when I tried these wall plugs I could never get more than three of the four pairs to work. I have a decent punch down tool and a little circuit tester which when you plug in the new cable it sequentially tests each pair. It did work before, but now its fixed so it doesn't work. Update on Kernel Panics on G4
I'd like to thank John Carmone for sending me the Rom updater for the G4. It solved the problem. I had a G4 which was one of the "to the Dump" G4's I got from work. I wiped the hard drive and installed OS 9 and upgraded it to 9.2.2. Then I installed 10.3 and upgraded it to 10.4.11. After that I got the kernel panic and the G4 wouldn't boot up. I was able to get it to boot by holding down the shift key and it went into 10.4. I rebooted it into OS 9 and copied the rom updater to the hard drive. It says you're supposed to shut the computer down and then power it up holding down the programmer key which is next to the reboot key below the power button and as it comes on you wait to here a tone. Once this happens the computer will automatically launch the rom updater and perform the update. This happened exactly as advertised and the rom was updated. I have a hardware test CD that came with my digital audio G4 and tried to run it on this computer but it wouldn't go. Oh well. This computer now runs and seems to behave itself. I was able to give this computer and some odds and ends for my niece's birthday. Thankyou John. Hello, I have just come into possession of 6 Mac Cpu's which are nearly identical with my DA G4. The newspaper I work for didn't know what to do with them. They didn't want to hassle with putting them up on eBay and spending the labor to ship them and they were just lying around. I offered to pay for one of them and they said no thanks you can just take it. I asked about the other five and they said I could take those too. So I did. While I was carting them out to my truck somebody asked me if I was going to the dump. Anyway, how do you tell which models these are? The slowest one is 400Mhz and the fastest is 500 Mhz. Keeping in mind that these were used were used at a newspaper the scrawniest one has a gig of ram and there is one that has 2gigs. The hard drives aren't much. I noticed a 40gig and an 80gig. The cases look identical but the motherboards seem to be of two different types and I don't know enough about this other than the pram batteries are in one or another spot. They are all supposed to run. I've only powered one of them up. It is set up with their network software and it comes up with their sign in screen. It asks for with Administration or Macuser. Fortunately, the password is macuser, I've worked there 19 years. I've learned how their passwords work. I've priced similar computers on eBay and the going asking price seems to be $30, shipping is about the same. I don't know what I'm going to do with these. Maybe I'll build a coffee table. Is there anything I should look out for? Also the newspaper has a bunch of dead screen LCD iMacs. They aren't sure what they're going to do with these. Are these hard to fix. Should I make an offer? My Subscription
I've been signed up for the digest version for I don't know how long, but for the past 3-4 I've been getting individual emails. I've tried shutting off my subscription and resigning up for the digest version, but no matter what I've tried I still keep getting individual emails. Somehow my preferences are crossed and I don't seen how to straighten them. I got a new keyboard, used, some of the function keys don't work
I got a new keyboard, used, some of the function keys don't work. I think I have enough parts to make one functional keyboard. All the keys work on my bucktoothed keyboard except for the missing F3. The new used keyboard has all the keys but the left command keys and the spacebar don't work. The simplest thing would seem to me is the pry the F3 off the new keyboard and put it on the old keyboard. Are there any tricks to this? Also, what would make me very happy is to suck all the crumbs out of my old keyboard. My shop vac was ineffective in sucking these things out. I think I need to open the back of the keyboard to do this. I notice there seem to be 4 screws with some sort of drive I don't recognize with my readers on. Is this a good idea? Can it be accomplished without much risk? What tools do I need to accomplish this? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Weird Stuff
I have weird stuff going on. I think there may be a short in my USB hub. Anyway, I put my Digital Audio G4 to sleep and it wakes up. It will do it within a couple of minutes and it got to the point where I sat at the computer and put it to sleep just to see if it would stay asleep. Nope, it would wake up all on its own. Then I got PO'd and shut it down completely. Now, this is the weird part, that thing would power up on its own all by itself with no action from me. After more investigating, I noticed that whenever it would wake up there was a very faint electrical click sound coming from the area of the hub and then the computer would wake up. I discovered that sometimes I could get the computer to wake up just by futzing around with the hub. I couldn't do it every time. I got the computer to wake up just by closing the hatch on the side. All the electrical connections look like they're tight. I can also get the computer to wake up by kicking the desk, or by slamming the lid on the toilet which is in the next room. I'm thinking the problem is in the hub. Several years ago with a previous USB hub I could get this computer to reboot just by messing with the connections at the hub. For some reason I was having troubles with hardware issues that I couldn't figure out. Finally, it seemed that the PRAM battery had died so I replaced it. I am not completely sure, but I am fairly certain that the original PRAM battery was installed backwards. The current PRAM battery is in properly seated. I bought this computer used. It's a really good computer even though it is ten or eleven years out of date. PS. I can't find my damn F3 key. My shop vac ate it and I sifted through the stuff twice and got dust in my lungs. Yuck! Is there a place where I can get a replacement F3 key? Or do I need a new keyboard? I never have used my F3 key, my keyboard just looks bucktoothed. Apple Mail can't access google maile
I got a Motorola SBG900 and since I've used it Apple Mail can't access google mail. I've opened ports 587 and 995 which are specified in the preferences. This hasn't made a difference. I've been able to get my Tivo to work. I found a list of a whole bunch of ports which I was able to open in the custom firewall setting. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm running 10.411 on a Digital Audio G4. The documentation that came with this thing is mostly useless, as is the documentation online. Motorola SBG900
Hello, I just got a Motorola SBG900 Cable Modem/Wireless router. So far it won't let me do things my old D-Link DL-704 would let me do. Primarily, Apple mail can't access my Gmail account and my Tivo can't download anything. It gives me a no open port error. I know next to nothing about routers. At the present time I have no use for the wireless part, but one day. Can anybody help me out. Re: G4 Mac OS 10.3 to 10.4 or 10.5?
Do you run OS 9 at all? If you do I think 10.4.11 is as high as you can go and still operate under system 9. I have a Digital Audio G4 which runs great under 10.4.11. I also have a processor upgrade. Re: digital audio processor upgrade
Absolutely. However, I wouldn't get one off of eBay. I just recently bought one from OWC. It is a 1.6Ghz. It required an installation program which ran off a CD which required booting off the CD, pressing the programmer switch and then booting up and running a program which modified the boot rom, It modifies the rom so you can boot into OS X, then you run another routine so you can run System 9 under OS X and another routine so you can boot into System 9. There maybe a couple of other routines to run, I'd have to dig out the manual to see. This runs fine now. If you were to buy a processor off of eBay you probably could just plug it in, but I don't know for sure. A processor off of eBay would be cheap and wouldn't give you much of a speed boost. Personally, my rule of thumb on upgrading processors is to go 4X faster or get a new computer. This thing cost me about $240 and if you need to you can talk to OWC tech support. smac0031 On Jun 21, 7:50 pm, jomac wrote: > is it possible to put a faster apple processor in a digital audio > 466mhz power mac? apple processors are available on ebay pretty > cheap, and i'd like to know if this is a viable alternative to a non- > apple upgrade? if it can be done, what is the fastest apple processor > that will work in my model. > thanks --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Updating Max OS X 10.4.11
So If I am reading this correctly, 10.4.11 is as far as 10.4 goes. At Apple's site there are upgrades all the way up to 10.4.7 which are listed as combo, ppc, and intel. I've tried downloading various flavors of these and they won't work. I do have a 1.6 ghz accellerator in this Digital Audio G4. I used to run 10.3 and every so often I would get upgrades that finally took my system to 10.3.9. Using system updater got a bunch of security updates and some other upgrades but now it tells me I have nothing to upgrade. I don't understand. How far does 10.4 go?
