Hi phil
Why did you decide to put the floot in the care of magical creatures
classroom and the rememberal in the centor divination classroom? I have
read in the first hp book that the rememberal was delivered by owl post
while the students were having breakfast and harry received the floot
as a christmass present, so if you want to keep the sarah game strictly
based on harry potter, you should enable sarah to have the floot and
rememberal in her inventory from the start of the game, not in
classrooms.

Hi Davy,
Yes you can go back to a floor you visited, and getting that to work
correctly took three months.
I had the game almost finished in December when I realized that a feature of
SOD did not work for Sarah.
I had developed the game as separate floors thinking the going between
floors would not need to be tested since the built in function worked well
in SOD.
Technically you can go from the first level to the second and so on until
you win the game but that would mean missing several levels.

 Hi Phil,

I was wondering a very simple to answer question: Is it possible to move
backwards in the game? So let's say from the second floor back to the
 first
one, and then even back to Front door mat if you really want to? I know
that this is possible in some parts of SOD.

 Regards!

If you have gotten to the first floor, then I suppose you have gotten the
map from Filch's office. Or rather you must have got it, or you wouldn't

 able to proceed farther.
And if you were able to locate the caretaker's office, then you just have
passed that door that leads to the flute. It's just one or two corners
before the office, and only a blind person could have passed it without
 noticing so. *grins*
 Hope this helps,

[Audyssey] strictly based on the harry potter books

Ok all, here's something else I came across; this time in the second hp
book. Dobby tried his best to keep harry from going back to Hogwarts.
He visited harry in his room while his parents had guests. He asked
harry over and over not to go back to Hogwarts. If sarah aught to be
strictly harry potter based, then dobby should also try to keep sarah
away from the castle.
When sarah enters the basement, dobby should, instead of offering her
help and giving her his mirror, tell her that its dangerous here, she
should leave the castle.. If sarah walks down the staircase to the
basement, dobbie should Aparate to her and say something like:
Miss, go back, its mortal danger here; don't return here again. and
then disappear again. When I battled a lot to understand the fake
dementors or boggarts, there was a huge argument on the list that in the
harrypotter books there was a shape shifting creature in the staff room
whenever harry unlocked the golden cabin, then listers got impatient
with me because I didn't understand the concept of a fake dementor right
away.
So if sarah is strictly based on harry potter, then dobby should also
try to convince sarah to leave the castle instead of offering her his
help.

Hi Nicol,
There is a specific reason Dobby wanted Harry to keep away from the castle
in book two but if I wrote it here, it would spoil the end of the book for
you.
Since Dobby helps Harry in book four, five and six, I think he does not
think Harry should leave the castle at the time the game is set, which is
right after book five.

Re: [Audyssey] strictly based on the harry potter books

2007-04-03 Thread Neo
No, Sarah is not strictly based on Harry Potter. As far as I know, nobody
made such a statement in public. Phil himsel mentions on his pages that
Sarah and the castle of witch craft and wizardry, inspired by the books of
J. K. Rowling, but not strictly based. It just means that Phil tried to
take the best and most interesting and atractive challenges, puzzles and
realms of the whole storyline and put them into the game. First, making the
game a complete copy of the series would be almost impossible I think and it
would also dramatically reduce the enjoyment one can have when playing it,
and second don'T forget that you still have almost 5 books to read through
to understand the whole complex story. If you wanted to resemble anything
and everything in the game, you'd first have to work for many more years,
and second, it would look awfully. Choosing any book or movie etc. as your
source of inspiration is wonderful for the possibility to expand the
original world of the story with your own ideas and thoughts.
Take care,
Lukas

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah

2007-04-03 Thread Neo
Well, then you should make sure that you explore the entire ground floor and
basement level. By the way, Phil, I don't know if there's any magical object
limit needed to enter the dungeon, but I think there should be. If you need
7 objects to enter the first floor, then what is it good for when you can
just enter the dungeon regardless of how many objects you've found if you
want? ;)
Thanks,

Re: [Audyssey] list status was a joke

2007-04-03 Thread aaron danvers-jukes
what about mine? i sent mine through on a reply to another joke. anyhow,
i'll send it again just in case you missed it. it's another version of it
since i don't have the message here.
A friend called me on skype. He's a huge fan of mortal kombat and keeps
playing deception when i'm on skype, and i like listening to him. so this
began:
I told him that there was a mortal kombat armageddon demo for the pc. I was
about to give him the (would-be) link but he had to go for revision.
Later on, he calls me back. I tell him, here's the link.
I open up msn messenger and start a conversation.
And i say, you might not like this. and he says back, why?
And then... i type:
April fools!
And he's like, that was an evil one! and then... the part that i did not
see coming.
But, guess what! I've already got the game.
I gasp in surprize and just wait, stop what i'm doing.
April fools!
Man! i just cannot believe it even now. Got done by my own april fool! but
that's ok, i'm getting the game quite soon anyhow... but i don't know when
he is getting it.
hope you enjoy the joke.
thanks.

Subject: [Audyssey] New Experimental Audio Game: Underwater

 Hi,

Amongst other things, Sander and I (of AudioGames.net) also teach a
seminar Game Audio to game design student at the Utrecht School of the
Arts. Here we have given the students the assignment to develop a small
audio game. I say small since they only have several weeks to come up
 with
a game concept, create the sounds and program and test the game. In a few
weeks time the students will present their work and the results will be
published in the Experimental Audio Games section at AudioGames.net
 PlayCenter:

 http://www.audiogames.net/playcenter/index_exp.php (so here you can
 download all games)

Three students have already finished their (mouse-controlled) audio game
 entitled Underwater. Here's a description:

 *quote*
In this audio game you command a submarine and are exploring the deep
 sea.
With your sonar you navigate, and locate treasures.

Use the mouse to move to the left and right.
Press the right mouse button to move forward.
Press the left mouse button to use your sonar. Now listen carefully!
When you hear a low ping back, it means there is a wall. When you hear a
high ping back, it means there's treasure! When you get near a treasure
you will hear it tinkle. Find them all and dive deeper in to the sea!

But be warned... There are rumors of sea mines in the sea. Some say you
only hear them by a beeping sound... so watch out!
 *quote end*

The students are very interested in your feedback and comments and tips
 to
improve the game in the remaining time. You can download Underwater
 through this link:

 http://www.drawingnightmare.com/games/Underwater.exe

Since the students are not a member of this list, please post all your
comments and tips in the Underwater-forum thread at the AudioGames.net
 forum:

 http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=1203

This way other students might also benefit from your feedback.

 Have fun!

 Richard

Re: [Audyssey] strictly based on the harry potter books

2007-04-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
First, Sarah is based on Harry Potter, but is not strictly a Harry
Potter game. For example, all of the major enemies Harry Potter and his
friends must face do not appear in the game. Apparently the Death Eaters
are off doing something else, and have better things to do during the
summer than hang around Hogworts.
Second, is you need to understand Dobby had very specific reasons in
book 2 for warning harry Potter away from Hogworts which are revealed
at the end of the book.
As you read on in to book Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince you
will find Hogworts is allot safer than the rest of the magic community
as the Deather Eaters are preparing for the war that will likely go in
to full blown warfair in Deathly Hallows. It so happens I believe Harry
Potter will come of age in Deathly Hallows so he will be freely able to
use his magical gifts outside Hogworts, and will have to do so to fight
the Death Eaters.
Anyway, my point is we can assume Sarah has no direct part to play in
the coming war, thus is not a target, but she probably knows about it
from reading the Daily Prophet.
Remember the point of Sarah is she broke in to the castle when just
about everyone was away, but Phil did make one mistake in writing this game.
Sarah can use a spell that according to the books Hogworts has magical
protection against.

Re: [Audyssey] the floot and rememberal

2007-04-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
Not necessarily. Keep in mind the floot is required for a magical
creature you encounter later in the game. So itmakes sense you would
find such an item in the Care of Magical Creatures Class room.
As for the remember all read some more in your Harry Potter books, and
you might see Phil's placing of items is logical.
After all I don't think Sarah is actually finding Harry's actual floot,
remember all, or any of the major items he and his friends carried, but
other similar items left by other students during the school year.
As for items like the map it is possible Harry, still under age,
probably had to turn the map in at the end of the year, and it ended up
on the care takers desk or something like that.
So bottom line I am sure Phil can come up with fairly reasonable
explanations why things appear where they are.

Nicol Oosthuizen wrote:
NB: This email and its contents are subject to our email legal notice

 Hi phil
Why did you decide to put the floot in the care of magical creatures
classroom and the rememberal in the centor divination classroom? I have
read in the first hp book that the rememberal was delivered by owl post
while the students were having breakfast and harry received the floot
as a christmass present, so if you want to keep the sarah game strictly
based on harry potter, you should enable sarah to have the floot and
rememberal in her inventory from the start of the game, not in
 classrooms.

[Audyssey] Introducing myself, and 3d audio games

2007-04-03 Thread Talksina
hi
I joined this list yesterday, as I read of the audyssey mailing
list on the AudioGameMaker's forum, I didn't know it existed
and, as I can read from the archive, there are the most popular game
authors, participating to this group.
Maybe someone already knows me, but I introduce myself for the
others. 26-year-old girl (almost 27), italian, totally blind and
completely passionated of PC games, especially audio games
I ordered at least 6 or 7 games from various authors (2 from Liam
Erven, 2 from GMA games, one from Philip Bennefall and then the Sarah game)
Sarah game, Techno shock and shades of doom are my favourite.
But, in Sarah game, I am really getting stuck!
First of all, congratulations to Phil Vlasak for his voice (i heard
him on the sarah presentations)
and, then, I do not find the room where is the cat to get away from,
and the map. I take the broom, and go to the great hall, but then i get lost.
and, in TechnoShock, I get stuck on the first level as i found a
mosquito robot that I does not manage to kill, and if I manage to get
in the second level, I find 2 locked doors, which i do not have the
key of. And another switch to turn on, and if you press enter on it
you find a terrible fire and never escape.
maybe i am missing something in the first level!
Judgment day? yes, I bought also that game, but, I find it quite
annoying right now, just to press control and move!
I think Sarah is the best, it has many kinds of interaction between
the character and the developing of the game story, actions, events, etc
PS maybe that guy Bryan Peterson is mr. BryanP of audio game maker forum?
I am the violent girl who discussed with that guy Jordan on the fire! *lol*
PS2 for Raul:
I thought the 1st April was only an italian tradition, but, fish
getting stuck into the nets, is all over the world! *lol* Don't know
in other countries, but here, when a person falls into someone's
trick/joke the first of april, a paper fish is attacked on the fool's
back, or behind his/her shoulders, and sometimes there is something
written on the fish, that is fool or similar

 Hi Nicol,
First, Sarah is based on Harry Potter, but is not strictly a Harry
Remember the point of Sarah is she broke in to the castle when just
about everyone was away, but Phil did make one mistake in writing this
 game.
Sarah can use a spell that according to the books Hogworts has magical
 protection against.

 Hi Nicol,
Not necessarily.

 Hi phil
Why did you decide to put the floot in the care of magical creatures
classroom and the rememberal in the centor divination classroom? I have
read in the first hp book that the rememberal was delivered by owl post
while the students were having breakfast and harry received the floot
as a christmass present, so if you want to keep the sarah game strictly
based on harry potter, you should enable sarah to have the floot and
rememberal in her inventory from the start of the game, not in
 classrooms.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah minimum objects

2007-04-03 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Lukas,
You are correct in that there should be a minimum number of magical objects
found before allowing you into the dungeon level.
I did not do that automatically because the dungeon level was part of the
original demo level but I think putting a minimum would be better.
I think 5 are easy to find while the other 5 are more difficult.
Sometimes the headless hat is hard to find too so I am leaning towards at
least 4.

Well, then you should make sure that you explore the entire ground floor

 object
limit needed to enter the dungeon, but I think there should be. If you
 need
7 objects to enter the first floor, then what is it good for when you can
just enter the dungeon regardless of how many objects you've found if you
 want? ;)

Re: [Audyssey] Introducing myself, and 3d audio games

2007-04-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I am one of the lists co-moderators as the well as the lead developer
for USA Games. I'd just like to welcoem to to the list, and you should
get plenty of answers to your emails.
However, I might make one suggestion. When asking questions about games
each game should have it's own email. For example, if you have questions
about Sarah it should have something to do with Sarah in the subject and
have stuff related to Sarah in the email. If you also have questions
about Technoshock you might want to create a separate email with
Technoshock in the subject line and stuff related to Technoshock in the
body of the message.
The primary reason for separate emails for different games is those who
have no interest in the other games can simply pass up the questions
they don't know or have no interest in. A Sarah fan who has no interest
in Technoshock probably doesn't want to waid through several questions
about TS to find out what you were asking about Sarah. If the situation
was reversed the TS fan who has no interest in Sarah doesn't want to
read a bunch of Sarah related stuff to read about Technoshock in the
same message. Fans of both will read both emails.
Welcome to the list.

Hi Phil,
Yeah, that would make sense. After all the protections put in place
during the school months when the students are at Hogworts wouldn't
necessarily be required when the school is supposed to be empty asside
for the ghosts, care taker, and others who live at the castle all year
round.
As I have previously mentioned I think we can assume during the summer
months the Death Eaters have bigger and better plans than hanging
aroundHogworts when everyone else is pretty much gone.
Also I think you said this takes place after book six. So I think the
Death Eaters probably are getting ready for the end game anyway.

[Audyssey] Using the mouse was: Underwater

i want more room for my mouse though. it's really unfair, having to move the
mouse like, all the way to the right and you can't because there's not quite
enough room, and the rail racer mouse tips did not help. i do not know what
to do about that one.

end quote

One needs to practice lifting and resetting the mouse. It can be a bit
tricky at first, but with practice you will do it without even thinking.
I have an area about 6 by 6 inches for my mouse right next to my keyboard,
a very small area indeed, so in rail Racer for example, when I am about to
take a turn to the right, I move my mouse all the way to the left of my
little area, this gives me plenty of room to lean into the turn.
If you run out of room and need to move the mouse
you should be holding the mouse with your thumb on one side, index and
middle fingers on the left and right mouse buttons, and ring finger and
pinky on the opposite side of the thumb. If you are left handed, obviously
reverse the finger placement.
By holding the mouse this way, it is easy to lift the mouse up and move it
without moving your virtual cursor. I myself use my thumb to lift the left
side of the mouse up, then slide the mouse to give myself more room.
For example, say you need to lean in a long curve to the right, you start
moving your mouse, but halfway through the curve you still need to lean more
to the right but you are out of room for the mouse. Simpy lift the mouse
up, move it back to the left, place it back down and continue moving right.
If you aren't used to doing this, it may sound complicated, but as I said
before with a little practice, you will do it without a conscious thought.
I would reccomend all gamers try the mouse and give it some time and
practice, as I think you are going to start seeing more and more games for
the blind that use the mouse, as it allows a subtle level of control you
simply cannot get with the keyboard.
Some folks are simply resistant to change, and therefore don't want to try
new things. I have several beta testers of Rail Racer that have not even
tried to use the mouse, and several others that tried it briefly and gave
up. I do not understand this mentality, but to each his own. About half
the testers use the mouse exclusively to race with, and they love it, as do
I. It makes you feel like you are actually controlling a racing machine,
instead of stabbing at keys. Having said that, some of our best racers use
the keyboard exclusively and their lap times are amazing.
All future games put out by Blind Adrenaline will feature mouse support,
and perhaps a couple of simulation games will be mouse exclusive. As I
stated before, the mouse is simply a superior gaming input device in my
opinion.
BTW, significant announcements are on the horizon for Rail Racer, so start
shopping for some racing gloves, grin.
  Later,
  Che

Hi Tom,
The Sarah game takes place a week after book five ends.
I did this since I did not know what the Headmaster's office would look like
after book six.
Of course after books seven when Harry discovers the whole Castle was turned
into a Horcrux, forcing him to destroy it, then I would have no game.
Oops, I think I let that one slip, sorry Jo.

 Hi Phil,
Yeah, that would make sense.

I did not do that automatically because the dungeon level was part of the

I think 5 are easy to find while the other 5 are more difficult.
Sometimes the headless hat is hard to find too so I am leaning towards at

 Hi Nicol,
Not necessarily.

Why did you decide to put the floot in the care of magical creatures
classroom and the rememberal in the centor divination classroom? I have
read in the first hp book that the rememberal was delivered by owl post
while the students were having breakfast and harry received the floot
as a christmass present, so if you want to keep the sarah game strictly
based on harry potter, you should enable sarah to have the floot and
rememberal in her inventory from the start of the game, not in
 classrooms.

Since you will probably ask who it is, it can't be Nick or Myrtle or Binns

So I will make it the Fat Fryer's party.
Hmm, now did I put him in that level or not?
Anyway I would not recommend Sarah eating that food but it does have a good

Firstly, if you have read the books, you know just how highly Harry is
regarded in the wizard world, and you know why. So I'm sure you can see why
Dobby tried to keep Harry out of danger. Now, is Sarah as important/ Do
you think that Dobby would protect all witches and wizards the way he tried
to protect Harry? And lastly, rather than picking Phil's game apart, why
don't you either play it and have fun?, or not buy it because you don't like
it. Whichever way you go, please stop sending such posts as the one I am

When I battled a lot to understand the fake
dementors or boggarts, there was a huge argument on the list that in the
harrypotter books there was a shape shifting creature in the staff room
whenever harry unlocked the golden cabin, then listers got impatient
with me because I didn't understand the concept of a fake dementor right
 away.
So if sarah is strictly based on harry potter, then dobby should also
try to convince sarah to leave the castle instead of offering her his
 help.

Hi Charles,
I think he was saying in Sci-Fi movies, books, and shows the dead don't
always stay dead. They invent some way of bringing the person back to
life, or at least bring in a character like them while not exactly being
the real deal.
In Sci-Fi lore the person always comes back as a clone, or comes from a
parallel demmention, someone rewrites history so that person ends up not
dying, and so on.
A perfect example is Emperor Palpatine clearly dies in Star Wars Return
of the Jedi, but he comes back in one more Star Wars book when the New
Republic heroes discover there has been a clone of Emperor Palpatine
running around for 10 years undetected. Unlikely, but good escuse to
bring the guy back from the dead, or at least use his character again.

Re: [Audyssey] strictly based on the harry potter books

then there is dr who, where people fake being dead.
By stopping or slowing their heart down for a while.
This trick is good, you can do supprise attacks or let an enemy take you to
where ever they wish and either attack them there or sneak away to attack often
from a better position.

Hi Charles,
I think he was saying in Sci-Fi movies, books, and shows the dead don't
always stay dead.
