 Hi Folks
I think this article is important enough for the blind community to post
 it
 in full:
Video games' new frontier: The visually impaired -
 from CNN.com
 By Steve Mollman
 September 4, 2007

 . Story Highlights
. New interactive music video game developed for visually impaired
. Nintendo Wii's Wiimote controller or keyboard used to play
. Developers hope game will also be played online by mainstream players

Forget shoot-em-up addicts -- video games are reaching out to the rest of
 us.

The greatest symbol of this is the Wii console from Nintendo. Its
 innovative
wireless control -- the Wiimote -- has even non-gamers excited as they
 swing
it through the air to control, say, a tennis racket on the screen.

Wii's Wiimote may play a pivotal role in bringing the visually impaired
 into
 the electronic gaming fold.

But not quite everyone has been reached. One group is still largely
 ignored
by video game makers: the blind.

With that in mind, a team of researchers at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game
Lab in Massachusetts set out this summer to make a music-based video game
 that's
designed for mainstream players and also accessible to the blind.

Appropriately, perhaps, they incorporated the Wiimote into the game-play,
 though it's optional.

The resulting DJ game, designed for the PC, is called AudiOdyssey. In it,
players try to lay down different tracks in a song by swinging and waving
 the
Wiimote in time with the beats. Or they can just use keyboard controls.

The game reminded this writer of my lack of any rhythm whatsoever. I used
the keyboard version, where you're instructed to follow the beat by
 hitting
 an
arrow key. Miss a beat and you get an ugly sound. Things sounded pretty
ugly. But I did start to get a little better after 15 minutes and was
 awarded occasionally
by crowd cheers. It's a fun game. And I got a kick out of it.

So did 41-year-old Alicia Verlager. For her, though, the fun is a bit
 more
 significant. She's visually impaired.

Play is one of the ways in which people build relationships, she notes.
It's fun to take on the challenge of a game and take turns encouraging
 and
 laughing
at each other's sillier mistakes. That's the experience I am really
 craving
in a game -- the social aspects.

AudiOdyssey is presently single-player only, and there's no scoring
 system.
But a multiplayer online version will be released in a few months.
 Intriguingly,
players in this version won't necessarily know whether their opponent is
blind -- and it won't make a difference in the game.

Ideally, they shouldn't even know that it is designed with the visually
impaired in mind, since we want to make a 'mainstream' game, says Eitan
 Glinert,
a 25-year-old grad student at GAMBIT and the lead researcher on
 AudiOdyssey,
 which is his thesis.

That said, after they find out that the game is designed to be
 accessible,
 it increases awareness, he adds.

Though using the Wiimote isn't necessary, Glinert believes it's a more
 fun
and expressive option. From a development standpoint, getting the Wiimote
 to
work with a PC game (it's meant to be used only with Nintendo's Wii) was
 a
 considerable engineering challenge.

And players who want to use the device will have to do a little extra
 work,
as well, including linking a Wiimote to a PC wirelessly via Bluetooth
 signal
(instructions on how to do this are included with the game).

Verlager believes AudiOdyssey's use of the Wiimote makes it unique among
accessible games. It's also, as far as she knows, the first accessible
 music
 game
for blind players. A startup called All inPlay offers online games,
including poker, designed to allow play between blind and sighted users.

For Verlager, it's important that games be mainstream and inclusive --
rather than special and for blind players.

I really get frustrated with the way blind people are portrayed as if
 they
live in isolation from the rest of the world and have no sighted family
 or
 friends,
 she says.

Media, which includes video games, is something people share and
participate in together, a way of building relationships and

If you want to sound like the Borg, you really need Steinberg's Wavlab.
Check out the numbers in Wrecking Ball and you'll hear how well it does.
Short of that, I could see a whole punch of keys played with the string
sound and that being vocoded--not like the borg but interesting. If you
want an easy vocoder, you need the AnalogX vocoder--just do a search for
AnalogX and you'll find it. It's command line but very simple. Also,
there's a vocoder in Adobe Audition.

Does any of you--well, I'm sure you do--have a midi keyboard that connects to
your computer? If so, then you have to check out this gem. It's called
Musical Space Invaders, and it was written to teach sighted kids to read music.
It shows notes flying across the screen, and you have to hit the corresponding
key on your keyboard before it's too late. The beauty of this is that the note
is played so all you have to do is play the note you hear--so if it plays a
middle c, you play a middle c and you hear a shooting sound--but hit b or c
sharp and you miss. Not the best sound effects in the world, but it's a cool
game. I have perfect pitch--or at least close to perfect, and I use it to
heighten my sense of pitches. You can find this game at

If the link doesn't work for some reason, (it should as I copied it right from

Hi Thomas,

Actually the extra meg or so that I was saving per game was all of the library
files not from the install program itself as the cab files are compressed as
well.

- Original Message -
Hi Jim,
Well, about saving space using a self extractor program verses a full
blown installation it really depends on the installation wizard you use.
For example, Microsoft's Setup Installation wizard, msi, is bloated and
you don't really seam to save much space when packing your game files
using it.. However, Inno Setup 5 has a feature that will allow you to
compress as you pack the files which acts not only as an installation
wizard, but as it packs them it uses similar compression methods as self
extractor, and does save loads of space.
I don't have a comparison between self extractor and Inno's compression
methods, but I can say Inno's compression is typically quite exceptable
for most developers and is widely regarded as pretty good.
Anyway, I've got allot of nice updates to my Vista compatibility chart
including some work arounds for playing the BSC games under Vista which
allot of user's will want to read.

Hi Nicol,
I do understand your position, but there is a couple of flaws in your

I'm way behind on Email because of PC problems, but, as a matter of fact,
you did state that you aren't a good braille reader. These people just
aren't paying attention or aren't thinking, not sure which. As for
brailling cards, it is better to braille the upper left corner of each card,
then turn the card 180 degrees and brailling what is now the top left
corner. This will prevent having to have the card facing a certain way when
reading. The braille is put on the side that has the numbers on it so that
face up to you is aqlso face up to sighted players. And there is no need to
use dymo tape if you have a slate and stylus or a brailler. Just emboss the
braille right onto the card. As for other games, chess sets that are
adapted for use by blind players are available, as are tactile versions of
other popular games. Most are for braille readers, although some are not.
I know that some sites have already been mentioned, and you might also find
sources through the use of a search engine such as

If I put them dead center on the card..it should not interfere too badly

 Hi,
I downloaded this game yesterday, but haven't tried it yet.
However, I must caution you that the installation isn't accessible,
at least with JAWS, in that the prompts and buttons aren't visible to

 HI liam
 A few questions for you:
 1. Do you have a credit card system? Can I buy the game on your site
 using
 a credit card?
 2. How much replay value would you say does super liam have? I know some
folks have a hard time with super liam, but I think you as developer can
tell me if your game does have much replay value? I am considering
purchasing super liam, because the sound effects are really cool. I really
like that sound effect when liam falls into the pit or whatever on act2,
 its
really a cool effect, but at the end of the day I want to buy a game
 with
a lot of replay value so would it be possible for you to tell me if you
think your game has replay value?

Want a mud where there's no PK? Want guns and grenades and cannons to
 kill
monsters with? Want a working pet system, and alot of things to kill?
 Want
to create your very own cyborg warrior? Well, try cyber assault!
This mud I newly started on is a mix of modern themes and shadowrun
concepts. Everything from reloadable guns to working grenades that can
 kill
a whole room of mobs, they are all here.
The admins are friendly, and they hoast quests for you to earn your quest
points with. Pretty everything's optional, if you want to RP, go ahead,
 if
you want to just sit back and blow up things, do that.
So check it out, the mud is currently quiet, but hopefully things will
 pick
 up soon.

Re: [Audyssey] 7-128 Software  free demo game book .

2007-09-06 Thread Kelly Sapergia
Hi,
I just tried the game book. I'm personally not impressed with it
so far for a few reasons. For one thing, it says this is a one-day
demo, which I think is way too short a time. The speech was also off
when the program was started for the first time, but I found out that
pressing the equals key will toggle it on or off. I suppose that's
not so bad, but I'm not impressed with the speech synthesizer they're
using (he sounds bored!) and there's a delay when selecting options
or typing in something. I'll admit I only played with this for a few
minutes, and haven't explored the program fully, so these are just my
first impressions.
Thanks.

Hi all. Lol this might seem silly, but...
Well u know how send space has some rediculous limitations on the
downloads of files. this means that if, for example, 15 people get the
patch, that download link ain't gonna work no more... so should i
upload it like 5 or six times, so everyone can get it?

Forget shoot-em-up addicts -- video games are reaching out to the rest
 of

With that in mind, a team of researchers at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT
 Game
Lab in Massachusetts set out this summer to make a music-based video
 game
 that's
designed for mainstream players and also accessible to the blind.

Appropriately, perhaps, they incorporated the Wiimote into the
 game-play,
 though it's optional.

The resulting DJ game, designed for the PC, is called AudiOdyssey. In
 it,
players try to lay down different tracks in a song by swinging and
 waving
 the
Wiimote in time with the beats. Or they can just use keyboard controls.

The game reminded this writer of my lack of any rhythm whatsoever. I
 used
the keyboard version, where you're instructed to follow the beat by
 hitting
 an
arrow key. Miss a beat and you get an ugly sound. Things sounded pretty
ugly. But I did start to get a little better after 15 minutes and was
 awarded occasionally
by crowd cheers. It's a fun game. And I got a kick out of it.

So did 41-year-old Alicia Verlager. For her, though, the fun is a bit
 more
 significant. She's visually impaired.

Play is one of the ways in which people build relationships, she
 notes.

From a development standpoint, getting the
 Wiimote
 to
work with a PC game (it's meant to be used only with Nintendo's Wii) was
 a
 considerable engineering challenge.

Still, compressing an executable will not always result in anything good.
I.E. try to pack an executable with WinRAR. You'd just save a few kB or so.
So if you really want to save space, use a packer for portable executables
like PECompact (DanZ Games did so), UPX or Shrinker.

Hi Jim,
Well, about saving space using a self extractor program verses a full
blown installation it really depends on the installation wizard you use.

Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

that sounds good about the new and improved compatibility chart.

As far as my game menu goes, well it may be cheaper now, but years ago I
was paying some money for limited web site storage and band width. I
thought the extra meg or so that the install program added was an awful
waste, so I thought that putting them all in one folder with a game menu
like I wrote for my dos computer would be a good idea. Then a friend told
me about the WinZip self extractor and it all came together. It still
does save a heck of allot of space and band width.

 Hi Trenton,
The ESP games work fine under Windows Vista provided the DirectX VB
 libraries are installed in your
 c:\Windows\System32
directory. Most issues in Vista are solvable provided you install the
 necessary dependancies.
As for running DirectX under Linux believe me it is not worth your time
trying. You have to configure the Windows emulator, wine, copy several
dll files from a Windows XP system, try and install DirectX, and hope
when you are done you did everything correctly. Even if you get a
successful emulation going for DirectX the games will run slow, and not
perform nearly as well as on Windows because of the emulation layer.
As for Lindows, AKA Linspired, it is true the os has a Linux core, but
the graphical user interface is totally custom. That means no Linux or
Windows accessibility software, such as a screen reader, will operate
well in the Linspired environment. That was the case the last I checked,
and the developers seamed less than interested in making there GUI
 accessible to the blind.
As for Casino I'm assuming you are talking about Kitchensinc Casino. The
only way you can realisticly move it to Linux without going through
killing yourself by setting up emulation is to rewrite it in Python,
Java, etc and then run it.

downloading it. Its only 44 percent complete. I'm backing up the file for
sure! If Ubuntu has a way to work with Direct-X, I'll let ya know. There
 is
that one Linux port called Lindows, now called LinSpired, that looks
 and
feels like Windows, I'm thinking games could be run on that one.
 http://www.lindows.com
is the old address, which points to the LinSpired one. I don't know
 what
the newer one is. Oh and one last thing. Just like Windows, Lindows isn't
 free ither.
Hmm. 698 MB download for an operating system, and I'm only at 315 mb. 45
 percent as I write.
I wonder if the Kiseeno game, for example, could be imported to Ubuntu
 one day.

Hi Trenton,
Yes, there are some games in Linux you cam play, but your selection is
obviously much smaller than
Windows gaming right now. Obviously, you can play web based games like
Sryth under firefox, and there are some shell based mud clients that
work well with Orca. There are some text based games like Hangman you
can download and install that work ok with Orca as well.
Quite a while back I wrote some textbased games of my own to use under
Linux like Black Jack, Poker, but I no longer know where the source code
is for those games at the moment. Though, if I get in the moodd to
continue my Linux games I'll see if I can find the source or simply
rewrite those games and post them for download.

[Audyssey] Game companies was Accessible soft

2007-09-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Trouble and all,
Yes, there is allot more to running a game company than just writing
the software. Things I suspect our teen age and younger members haven't
had the experience with yet.
For example, if someone wants to start a game company that licenses and
sells accessible games there are allot of financial considerations
involved that a teen ager probably doesn't have a clue about. Are they
going to become incorperated, a limited liability corperation, run it
without being incorperated, etc...
Everything you sell in the USA has an income tax attached to it. Let's
assume you sell up to $5000 in games per month or year, etc...
Well, the owner of accessible game company will have to pay out at least
$1600 to income taxes. There are ways of course to legally reduce that
amount by purchasing things which you can use as a tax write off like
software upgrades, new computer, etc. Then, file it with the IRS as a
business expense.
Not only that then we are talking about bank accounts. I don't know what
the legal age is for holding a private or business account at a bank,
but I am sure they won't allow say a 12 or 13 year old to hold such an
account without a cosigner of some sort.
Ok, I know our younger members say that is to much trouble, and I will
write my games for free. Again even that isn't without it's troubles.
Let's assume game dev x writes a free game and posts it on the web. Are
they going to offer free tech support as well? If so they need to know
how to trouble shoot issues such as if the end users Sapi gets broken
you should have some ideas how to fix it. If their libraries are missing
you need to figure out which ones are missing, and inform them how to
get the proper ones installed. There are all kinds of end user stuff
that can pop up as I have seen with STFC and Monty.

Hi Jim,

Narrator? I'm surprised anyone can get anything constructive done with that
thing.
Yesterday I totally reformated my laptop, reinstalled Vista from scratch, and
braught Narrator
up to solve my vidio driver issues before installing Window Eyes and Jaws. It
was not very fun, because
Narrator didn't read what was on the screen half the time.
As it happens I have installed Winkit, and made an icon on my desktop for it
with control+alt+k as the hot key. Makes it rather handy to unload my screen
reader, do alt+control+k, and then have access to all of your games. So I am
warming to your program launcher idea.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

Besides, you can only write so many games for free. Well perhaps that's not
the best way of wording it. I mean, let's say you wanted to write a nice,
hefty RPG game that would actually take some time to complete. Games like
that can't really be done for free. You'd have to hire a music composer,
sound designer, voice actors, all sorts of things. Then of course there's
the time it would take just for the programming part. Even I, who've never
written a line of code in my life (nor even seen one), can imaine ow long it
must take. If even a simple game can take a few months to write, I'd hate to
imagine how long it would take to write a game in the style of Baldur's
Gate, which is what Castle Quest sounded as though it was shaping up to be.
Games like that can't really be made available for free.

[Audyssey] USA Games .Net Decision.

2007-09-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello gamers,
A few days ago I had polled this list asking weather any of you were
running Windows 2000. Most of the responces were to the effect you were
running Windows XP, some had plans to upgrade to Windows Vista, and a
small minority had indicated they were already running Windows Vista.
None of the responces indicated that anyone had anything older than
Windows XP, and I am given to conclude dropping Windows 2000 support is
exceptible in this case.
Starting with Montezuma's Revenge Public Beta 2 I will be updating my
code base to .Net Framework 3.0 and DirectX Auggust 2007. For Windows XP
users I'll have a .Net Framework 3.0 update for you to download. For
Windows Vista users .Net 3 is already preinstalled, and all you will
need to worry about is if you have the latest DirectX patches and
version installed.
Cheers.

 Hi,
I just tried the game book.
Thanks.

 Yours Sincerely,
 Kelly John Sapergia

Short of that, I could see a whole punch of keys played with the string

want an easy vocoder, you need the AnalogX vocoder--just do a search for
AnalogX and you'll find it. It's command line but very simple. Also,
there's a vocoder in Adobe Audition.

Re: [Audyssey] super liam

2007-09-06 Thread blind guy
yeah, it has some replay value. the downside is if you played it (or
hearrd a recording) it's not randomized. so for example, in
level2|act2, a sewer lid appears at the beginning. if i wanted to, i
could count the steps it would take to get to the metal sounds. and
there's always a robot dude when you jump over the sewer trying to
blurp blurp your health, as itt says in the manual. heheheh! Anyway,
I would like it more random (i.e. the pack of dogs right on a fire
pit, so you would have to go frantic jumping for them), and you know,
etc, in level3, the bair attack at the end of some act, could be
random, the monkeys dropping those things could be in random places,
etc. and x1 could be on any of the platforms and maybe can move. Also
it should have difficulites (i.e. easy, moderately easy, normal,
moderately normal, insane, crazy, ultra, and impossible, that would be
awesome!

  HI liam
  A few questions for you:
  1. Do you have a credit card system? Can I buy the game on your site

Re: [Audyssey] 7-128 Software  free demo game book .

2007-09-06 Thread Dark
One day only? With three games to play? imho slightly stingy there.

In the matter of game demos, I actually found that it took me several goes
at something like Lone wolf before I decided to register the game. REGISTER

but I'm glad that they're offering a free demo of the program, sinse I
thought that business about bringing out a free game each thursday, and then
expecting you to initially pay for the program to run them was slightly
misleading. also, I was vaguely interested to try out some of their
gamesmyself.

Apparently the synth they're using was developed in a project at carnegie
Melon university which is some sort of free accessible tech developement
scheme. I'm actually slightly surprised that they didn't use Sapi, but there
you go.

I'll give their stuff a try as soon as I've got a good long free day (I want
to get the most out of my demo).

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Even though I have the java access bridge loaded I was never able to

Re: [Audyssey] Differences between demo registered version of TarzanJunior

Hello anne.

the demo version stops just before the end of stage 3 when you get to the
alpha monkey. Also, you can't practice on any stage after stage 3, though
you can stil listen to the sounds for the further stages of the game.

Beware the Grue!

I downloaded this game yesterday, but haven't tried it yet.
However, I must caution you that the installation isn't accessible,
at least with JAWS, in that the prompts and buttons aren't visible to

Subject: [Audyssey] Game companies was Accessible soft

 Hi,
I just tried the game book.
Thanks.

 Yours Sincerely,
