Re: [Audyssey] my oppinion to the game marked

2008-08-01 Thread Bryan Peterson
Personally I agree with Claudio. Given the total lack of user support toward
the AGM I can't see what their problem is. Anyone who visits the AGM forum
can see how dead it is. Most people have given it up because A. the manual
doesn't explain things well because it's not current and B. Nobody is
willing to help them figure out how to get things to work properly. I gave
it up because I couldn't get item sounds to stop playing after the character
picked up the object, or monsters to disappear after they died as they would
in an ordinary game. And again, the developers were absolutely no help. As
far as I'm concerned that's not a good way to go if you wanted more funding
for the project. I get the impression they really don't care if anyone uses
it anymore. They seem to feel that because the program was free its users
can't be called customers and therefore don't need to be helped when they
have issues with the product. So while I can understand not making it open
source, I agree that it should be turned over to someone who'll actually pay
attention to the feedback from users.
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.

 Hi Claudio,
While I really enjoy open source software myself I am also a realist.
Fact of the matter is there are some very good reasons why they wouldn't
want to make AGM open source or turn it over to another developer. The
minute they release it as open source or turn it over to a new developer
they lose all copyrights to the source code, ideas, and an anything else
 associated with the product.
As a software developer myself I work hard at what I do, and I
personally wouldn't like someone I don't really know mettling with the
source code. We programmers have our own ways of doing things, and it
can get very annoying to see someone else write a piece of code totally
different from how you would have done it. Also if I work many many
hours on a product I would be upset if someone took my source code, made
a couple changes, and suddenly marketed it under his/her name.

He has sended an e-mail to the developers and he has asked them for the
surce code of AGM because he's interested to continiuing the work.
But the people have sayed no, we don't do that!
The developers have bringed a product sorry for saying that, we couldn't
 use!
And here comes a friendly guy who wants to continiuing the work!
Why dear developers you don't give him the surce code?
 Best regards,
 Claudio.

Is that inportant here?
The developers have droped the projekt!
They've let ous alone with a product we can't use.
I think they don't have any ideas and also not the time to continiuing the
work.
So I think the best is really to give the surce code to another guy who can
eventually finish the work!
I think the idea of AGM is really cool and also the program is cool!
But there are to many bughs we can't work with!
If these bughs are deleted, we can use it very greadfull!
And thomas, here is another tought:
In the development time, I whrote several posts to the forum.
I've asked the developers why they need so long to develop.
Do you know what they sayed to me?
We need the time to test the program and fixing the bughs.
Sorry guys, but what I see here isn't a tested software!

Not only that but klango actually has got better since the crappy gaming

 Hi Claudio,
It is true that 2008 hasn't ben a very productive year so far, but there
has been more released this year than you think. Besides Puppy1, 3D
Velocity, and updates to Acefire GMA has released VIP Mud, 7128 is
getting ready to release 8 new childrens games, BSC has released updated
versions of Troopanum and Pipe, and USA Games is hoping to get out some
new demos around Christmas time. So let us not count 2008 as over and
done with just yet. Good things come to those who wait.
As for James North let us not bring that topic up again. I do know there
was more to him closing Alchemy than just backlash from the blind
customers who paid for Raceway and Montezuma's Revenge. He did have some
personal issues going on in his life which I agreed not to repete to the
blind community. His personal problems are his issues alone, and let us
just say he had a lot of issues to deal with at that time.
As for developers like Dan he worked on the BSC Games and DanZ Games
titles while he was a student. Now, that he is entering the job force,
and moving on with his life he probably doesn't have the time and energy
to work on games any more. He didn't give specific reasons why he was
leaving, but I figure it is probably do to changes in his employment
status, and time he wants to spend elsewhere.

 Claudio,

The reason that there are so few audio games being released is because
very few people buy them, or even download the free audio games.

I think it was Che sometime last year who was lamenting that his game,
which has been spoken of well by people who play it, hadn't been
downloaded as much as he'd hoped. And his game is free.

As Thomas has said, programming games ain't easy. Even if you are doing it
for free, it takes a lot of effort. (Though Jim Kitchen seems to have
found the sweet spot as far as designing games that can actually get
 finished.)

And if you are trying to keep a company afloat, you go where the money is.
Otherwise your electricity gets cut off.

On a positive note, here are some things you can do to make more audio
 games get built:

 1. Buy some yourself.
 2. Download free audio games and email thanks to their developer.
 3. If you like a game, mention it to your friends.
 4. Likewise, mention it to your library or schools.

Supply will increase or decrease to meet demand.

Ok good concept but its a total piece of crap when compaired to the klango

Not only that but klango actually has got better since the crappy gaming

There are some issues running it on my system but eventually I will try

 Hi Claudio,
It is true that 2008 hasn't ben a very productive year so far, but there
has been more released this year than you think.
He didn't give specific reasons why he was
leaving, but I figure it is probably do to changes in his employment
status, and time he wants to spend elsewhere.

levels, as I love shooting the thug grin . I managed to shoot him 10

came across a small problem. Luckily Justin was aware of this, and was
 going
to try and resolve it. If you are playing Level 12 on Easy Difficulty, and
your score is around the 180 mark, a run-time error occurs. I was able
to provide Justin with details of where I was at in the game, what I was
doing when the error occurred, etc, which was what he was after.

This reminds me. I would like your opinions on how you are willing to
register a game. When I say register, I don't even just mean registering in
the normal way, I mean any way of confirming that you have paid or whatever.
There are a bunch of ways that I could do it. I could just ask for a
username and key, or Product ID and key, or have a server password, or we
can go the online registration method. I could ask the user to log into an
account, where they can change their password, etc.
It doesn't have to be what I've listed, I'd love new ideas from those of you
that don't want any of these systems.
Thanks.

 thats a good thing.

Re: [Audyssey] my oppinion to the game marked

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Rick,
Not all game developers are using hardware specific keys. I know for a
fact USA Games and Draconis don't.
One reason I won't be using hardware ids in all of my future titles is I
am working on a cross platform licensing tool for my games that works
on Mac, Linux, and Windows. In such a case it is difficult if not
impossible to tie a key to a specific OS and hardware id profile with so
many different platforms involved.
As for GMA, Blind Adrenaline, etc thank our blind cracker friends out
there that pirated blind games and now the developers can't trust us.
GMA did not use to use hardware ids, but after SOD, LW, etc got cracked
and passed around David Greenwood decided to tighten his security, and
all of the later releases have hardware based keys.

Rick wrote:
I don't buy audio games anymore because developers are tying them to your
 system.
If you have to reformat, or replace your hard drive you have to send in for
 a new key.
That can get to be a pain after a while.
Most people I talk to feel the same way.

[Audyssey] AGM was my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Claudio,
I know. The developers really didn't have a very good follow through or
tech support on the AGM after its initial release. However, to them it
was just an experimental lab project. To many of us it was going to be a
game development tooll.
However, I know of one game developer right now working on a similar
product to the AGM. It is called Genesis 3D. When it is completed it
will make AGM sound like yesterdays garbage. Smile.

Claudio wrote:
 Hello Thomas!

The minute they release it as open source or turn it over to a new developer
they lose all copyrights to the source code, ideas, and an anything else

 end quote

 Regards, Claudio.

[Audyssey] Unbeatable games

2008-08-01 Thread David Standen
Hi Sean,
I wouldn't let this bother you too much. After all, some games are
designed to be unbeatable. I will use Sonic Invaders as an example. If you
happen to get past Level 40, the game continues until you finally die. One
day I was able to get up to level 52. Mind you, I will probably never
achieve this feat ever again, but some of the levels are incredibly hard.

[Audyssey] AGM was my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
Well, the problem with AGM and its technical support is it wasn't
developed as a commercial product with long term support. Do remember it
was written by a bunch of college students who just wanted to get their
grade, degree, and get on with their lives. AGM is just another sad
example of what happens to college research projects after the initial
team of developers graduate and no longer have any interest in
continuing the project.
However, it was not a total loss. Perhaps the AGM itself is dead, but I
have used many concepts and ideas in my own Genesis 3D project I am
attempting to work on in my free time. I really like the concept of
being able to drag and drop enemies, items, and building blocks around
on a grid, open a properties Window, and set there values.
One advantage I have they didn't have I can see what worked and what
didn't work for them. I can try and avoid making the same kinds of
mistakes they made in my Genesis clone of AGM.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

Hi,

What i don't get, is, why do there leave this side a life and pay for it?
www.audiogamemaker.com?
That kosts a dollar or 2 in the year.
And why don't they kick this side out of the web?
They don't make update for it.
So it gives only the one version, and someone can host it on the web.

Re: [Audyssey] my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
It really depends on what level of security you feel comfortable with.
As for myself I am going to stick with a user name and product key, it
is a week security system, but you are giving paid users freedom to do
what they want with the product.
As far as the best method I think a web based registration is best. It
allows them to reinstall their OS many times, is not platform specific,
and your web server handles all the product activations from a remote
location that the average smo can't access. Since most audio games are
downloaded anyway it is pretty safe to say the majority of your
customers has internet based access.

Damien Sadler wrote:
 Hi Guys,
This reminds me.
 Thanks.
 Regards,
 Damien.

Hi,
What language. Do you mean C++?
If you mean C++ being hard I think is really debatable. All of us learn
differently find some things harder or easier than others. As for myself
I made straight A's in my C++ courses, and I never found it all that
difficult. others I know of say it is the most difficult programming
language they tried to learn. So my experience has showed me what is
easy for one man is hard to understand by another. It is relative to the
person not a proven fact that the language is easy or hard.

Re: [Audyssey] AGM was my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
HiKevin,
The Genesis 3D game engine and editor is being designed by my very own
game company USA Games. As many gamers on this list know I am really
into advanced 3d FPS games, and we needed a way to create such games
without having to write and rewrite the same basic game core elements
over and over again. When I saw AGM I got the idea I could do the same
thing only in an advanced 3d game environment.
Obviously, as many gamers here pointedout AGM left a lot to be desired.
My Genesis 3D engine/editor allows me to save up to 10 games, draw 3d
levels, has built in 3d game calculations, the ability to change
character stats, etc. I think whenever I manage to get it ready for use
it will be far better than AGM in the end.
However, before anyone asks when it will be ready all I can say a
release date is a long long ways off. I am currently attempting to
rewrite large chunks of the Genesis core to make it run on Mac, Linux,
and Windows. That means using wav files to speak game information, using
SDL as the sound/keyboard support, and the directory structure between
Mac, Linux, and Windows is quite a bit different.

Re: [Audyssey] my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kevin,
Hardware based keys are keys that use your CPU identification number as
part of the encryption/decryption for the key. In theory each number in
the CPU identification number will select a certain part of the end
product key.
For example, if you had a CPU identification number like 8125. The
number 8 might generate some letters and numbers like jmfxz8. The 1
might generate qx9mf. The 2 might generate m7lgnx. The 5 might generate
y85gnz.. Ok, you put that together and you get a 16 character product
key that uses 8125 to create and compare the key to your CPU. If the
product key you enter into your game does not match the CPU
identification number the game lets you know the key is not valid.
However, if the string of letters and numbers match up to the key
created by your unique CPU identification number the program gets
registered. That is the technique of making hardware based keys.
Smile.

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kevin,
You would have to ask Richard for the official answer to that question,
but I suspect it doesn't cost them very much to keep it running. If they
are running AGM off of a university web server then it is probably
costing them next to nothing to operate the web site and keep it going.
The domain itself probably cost them say $10 to $15 a year, and that
isn't that much to keep the audiogamemaker.com domain registered.

Kevin Weispfennig wrote:
 Hi,

What i don't get, is, why do there leave this side a life and pay for it?
 www.audiogamemaker.com?
That kosts a dollar or 2 in the year.
And why don't they kick this side out of the web?
They don't make update for it.
So it gives only the one version, and someone can host it on the web.
 Ciao

Hi Kevin,
No, that isn't what I meant. The full version can design unlimited
number of games. What I meant was that you can save up to 10 places in a
single game you are playing at any given time.
For example, in a Shades of Doom type game you can save up to 9
different games you are currently playing or 9 places in the same game
you are playing. If they are full you have to save over a previously
saved game or erase all of your saved games and start over. This has to
do with the game you are playing and not the games your creating/designing.

Re: [Audyssey] my oppinion to the game marked

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan and all,
Well, sometimes giving your source to someone you trust isn't safe. Back
when Mac OS was going graphical in the early 90's Apple hired Microsoft,
Bill Gates and his gang, to fix and add features to the newest version
ofMac OS. Even though they had legal agreements up the butt, a friendly
working relationship at that time, it turned out to be a mistake for
Appple. As soon as Microsoft finished with their end of the deal they
turned right around and stole, well, legally took all of the updates
they just put in Mac OS plus all of Apples ideas and put them into
Windows. Microsoft ended up getting all the glory for the features, and
Mac OS looked like copy cats when it was their ideas and features to
begin with.
However, one big diference that were not lost on the true techies is
that the wripped off Mac OS graphical user interface, we call Windows
95, was much less stable than Mac OS that was released for Apples' own
desktops at the same time. Mac OS has always been more stable and better
designed than Windows, but they made many mistakes like that one that
allowed Windows 95 to be marketed with their own ideas, features, and
graphics technologies at that time.

Ryan Smith wrote:
 Hi,
That's why I never make projects open-source, and only give the source
to people I trust completely. You also have SDM 3 and 4 releases in
2008. 2008 is not over yet. SDM 4 took alot of time, especially the 3D
game, which was worth it in the end. I would always be more willing to
give out source when the game is released, however still, they add a
small feature that's 3 lines and doesn't work, and call it there
software. I do like open-source projects, but helping people with huge
software can be a pain, usually because you don't know what the var's
are, then you have to look at the comments, or ask them since there
 aren't any. I wouldn't call SDM a high-quality game, however it's
pretty fun if you don't have anything else to do. Currently, user's
cannot get past the side scroller. Once I fixed that, I had major
issues with the scoreboards, huge errors and hours of debugging. I
fixed them all, and SDM 4.1 will be out soon. I hope to release RMUD
within 2008, depending if the MOO is complete.

We already knew Raceway more than likely wasn't going to be out this year.
You've told us nothing new in that regard. In fact much of your message
simply stated and restated the obvious. It's no secret that we've lost many
developers over the years, and I can assure you it's not only because of the
amount of Emails they received. As Thomas pointed out in another message,
folks came in to write games and discovered it to be harder than they
expected. It's not our fault if they decided it wasn't worth it. I'm sure
that if more blind people were to get interested in the audio gaming market
we might possibly be able to create something almost as productive as the
mainstream gaming community. I know for a fact that the combined comunities
of AudioGames.net and the various mailing lists isn't the entire blind
gaming population. Of course part of the problem could be that many
developers seem stuck on making card games or simple sports or racing games,
when what many peopl are wanting is a more involving title. So it's no
surprise that blind folks ight be losing interest. That's why I'll always
respect Thomas for trying something new. I can assure you that had I the
mathematical skill necessary I myself would be attempting to design games,
but as I've said before math was never a strong point of mine, so
unfortunately I'll have to leave it to folks more skilled than I am.
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.

 Hi guys!
For my oppinion, the Number of games where have fund the market is very
 small in this year.
We haave get acefire, develocity, puppy1, and that's it.
 It's a bit a pitty...
I don't want attack one of the developers because I know what they work,
 it's just a suggestion I've made...
And note, develocity is just a beta, so i think I can't cunt it as a
 released title...
I also think that we couldn't expekt raceway for that year...
Because Thomas Ward has haad much other things to do with his apartenemt.

What I would say with that is that we don't have a very productive year
 and
that the marked will be smaller and smaller!
At the end, Thomas Wart is the only developer and he gets hundreds of
 emails
 from gamers with theyer wishes...
And I would not be kritical guys, but why has james nord closed his
 commpany?
 Because you guys, yes!
You guys have him sended so much e-mails and have he made stressed out!
I don't cunt me because I am in this comunity since 2007 and haven't heard
 of james nord...
But guys, be careful with your developers!!!
Othervise, the developers will run away and you can learn sighted games!
 *grin*
 Best regards,
 Claudio.

Re: [Audyssey] old game companies we have not heard much about

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Aaron,
From what I have been told by my sources about Windows 7 I think it
will be much more satisfactory than Vista. It is my understanding
Microsoft wanted to get Vista out the door asap, and so it was rushed to
production. Its new driver library, bugs, and other things hadn't been
fully completed when it was initially released. They basically hoped
they could address all the issues in service packs and through the
Windows update service. In my personal opinion this is a dirty way to do
business, but it is how they did it to get some initial up front capital.
However, now they have Vista to tide them over financially what they are
doing is working on addressing all the issues, bugs, and driver problems
with Vista and putting them into service packs for Vista users. Those
service packs are also being applied to Windows 7 which is basically
going to be Windows Vista with all the bugs, issues, and service packs
installed. Oh, they will probably add in afew extras like new wall
papers, sounds, icons, themes, a new feature here or there, but I have
been told it is not going to be a major upgrade. More of a Windows Vista
with a new look and feel, and with many bug fixes and patches installed
by default.
Also for us programmers they are of course going to be removing many of
the older libraries that have been around for ages, that are no longer
needed, and are replacing them with the updated .NET Framework, XNA is
going to basically replace DirectX as the core gaming API, and various
other changes that are available for Vista, but weren't necessarily
ready to ship with Vista last year. For example the XAudio2 library was
just released this year, and now officially replaces DirectSound in
Windows 7, but was in development and testing stages when Vista hit the
seen.So DirectSound was used instead on Vista.

 true tom.
I for one thing wouldn't mind staying with xp at least till the next time
 I really need to upgrade.
To tell you the truth, this will be a while, after this laptop decides to
die whenever that will be betwene 5-10 years, and maybe more I still have
my slow a10 which is semi dead but will probably last me another 5 years
or so if I reserect it maybe more.
The issue with staying with xp with a laptop is the fact that drivers will
not be made for the hardware and since all new hardware will require
drivers including sound there is almost no choice in the matter.
I suspect that if the next system is not up to scrat h and both laptops do
die whenever that will be and this one is just new so I don't think that
would be for at least 20-30 years if I play my cards right, if thats the
case and I don't have a job or a life a fact that I still am not sure of,
then I will just have to get a desktop, its not a big loss.
If push comes to shove I have an old sb16 here, I also have an old p3 733
here granted it has a busted ram slot on it meaning I would have the 256mb
ram instead of 512 which is recomended for xp really to be good enough to
run I probably could live with that.
If all else fails though my next system will be either linux or if I want
to stay with windows it will be windows 2000 the last system where
 activation is not required.

 Hi Damien,
Yeah, the fact of the matter is some people are going to upgrade and we
can't stick to total Windows XP only compatibility forever. As of last

all you can do is hope to find new copies on Ebay or find left over
 stock some place.
In the general market at least Mac OS Leopard sales are up since more
and more sighted companies and home users are sick of Vista as well.
Vista hasn't been the success Microsoft hoped it would be, and more
people are at least thinking about Linux or Mac OS now.
As game programmers we need to keep an eye on these trends as we are
slowly seeing it happen to the blind community as well. I have a friend
from high school who was so disgusted with Vista he went Linux. I know
someone else who recently purchased a MacBook Pro with Leopard on it.
Both of them are blind, and they don't want to go to Vista.

Re: [Audyssey] AGM was my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kevin,
We have not set a price for Genesis 3D at this time. First we need to
finish developing it and make sure everything works properly before we
can proceed how to market it, and deal with licensing the technology to
third-party developers.
The main issue is when we license the technology to third-party game
developers it could potentially create hundreds of new accessible games
for blind gamers. We need to make sure we can proffet from all of these
new games, and get paid for our part in providing the core technology
for all of the new games. It certainly won't bee free, and it will be
designed for someone wanting to start his/her own part time game company
out of it.
One way we might be able to do this is sell the games through our web
site for the third-party developers, and then collect say 25% of the
proffet from the sales. If you sell $1000 in game sales we would take
$250 for licensing fees, and the use of our shopping cqart and other
services. This is how normal business partnerships like this works, and
both you and I would get paid for the use of Genesis.

Re: [Audyssey] AGM was my oppinion to the game market

2008-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kevin,
All of my USA Games products are written in C-Sharp also known as
C#.net. They depend on the Microsoft.NET Framework for Windows, and I am
currently working on adapting the code to meet the Mono 2.0
specifications for Linux and Mac OS. I am also dropping DirectX in favor
of the SDL sound and input API which works on Mac, Linux, and Windows.
As for AGM you are right. it was written in Flash and I believe it used
Shockwave as the audio API for the sound effects. Personally I think
Flash is a very expensive and over rated programming language and
technology. The games I managed to create with AGM were slower than
snales, and were massive CPU and memory killers. It was a very terrible
design all things considered.

 Hi,
That's why I never make projects open-source, and only give the source
to people I trust completely.

A hardware key, I believe, is tied to the hardware. Lets say you install
Judgment Day. It
gives you a product ID. Now lets say you get a new computer, and the ID is
different. That
is because it's using your hardware specifications on your computer to generate
ID'S. If I'm wrong
on this someone let me know, although I think that's right.

Only bad thing about key generators is that if you are so inclined, and some

Hi Damien,
It really depends on what level of security you feel comfortable with.

I would like your opinions on how you are willing to
register a game. When I say register, I don't even just mean registering
in
the normal way, I mean any way of confirming that you have paid or
whatever.
There are a bunch of ways that I could do it. I could just ask for a
username and key, or Product ID and key, or have a server password, or we
can go the online registration method. I could ask the user to log into
an
account, where they can change their password, etc.
It doesn't have to be what I've listed, I'd love new ideas from those of
you
that don't want any of these systems.
Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] wonder if any games can be played on braille plus somewhat easily?

Hi.

Good point, but the thing is, Python has many libraries. Unfortunately, the
braille plus and icon are
not equipped with full, functioning versions of Linux. Well, it might have full
Linux, I don't
know.

To program with it, you need to use a tool called Developer, it's at
tech.aph.org/mm

Why this is is probably because the Python that is installed is missing a lot
of sound libraries thus
making sound rts not possible to play. A mud client, that'd be interesting, if
it's possible. If I
knew which libraries were installed, which I don't, I could maybe learn Python.

[Audyssey] fighting games was Re: my oppinion to the game marked

2008-08-01 Thread Yohandy
I think what the community really wants is complex games, and online
playability. I've played acefire, and it is fun, but I don't really like the
randomness aspect. If I beat an opponent, I wanted to be due to skill, not a
random number generator. I'm not criticizing the game in any way, just
putting my opinion out there. I've only played the demo mind you, but I
suspect the online version is almost identical, only with a real opponent
and not a computer player. Now if you were to create an actual fighting
game, and it had online playability, I'd be the first to buy it. I
absolutely love fighting games. not sure why there haven't been any
fighting audiogames created, I don't imagine it would be all that
difficult. Now we're on the subject, any of you checked out the Mortal
Kombat VS dc universe videos that have come out recently? The game sounds
absolutely amazing. I'll be buying a ps3 for sure in the next few months
mainly to play this game.

No. I worked quite hard on Acefire, no matter how simple it is, and things
didn't go as planned for me either.
As far as Acefire goes, do you guys want any new features in it? If so,
 what
would you like? I have quite a lot of time to work on it, I've already
 fixed
some bugs, added a message notification system so you know when an online
opponent is typing, there's going to be more insults, etc.
 Please get back to me.
 Regards,
 Damien

 Hi John,

 quote
I think it was Che sometime last year who was lamenting that his game,
which has been spoken of well by people who play it, hadn't been
downloaded as much as he'd hoped. And his game is free.
 End quote

Actually, Rail Racer is not a free product. What the issue was is that
when Che initially released Rail Racer he was disappointed in the low
number of sales he was making. He expected, hoped for, a much larger
number of sales and it took a long time to get up to 200 sales. Che has
finally managed to get a reasonable amount of sales now, but it took him
several months to get the amount of sales he expected to have in the
 first couple of months.
His disappointment is understandable. He was a brand new game developer,
didn't know exactly what to expect from the market, and when it took a
long time to meet those expectations he was disappointed initially. Now,
that time has passed he is satisfied with his sales, but they certainly
could have been better of course.
The big lesson we have all learned from this is we shouldn't kill
ourselves creating the most advanced game possible. Jim's games are
simple, fun, games that can get completed because they don't take years
to bring to completion. I worked hard on STFC, Montezuma'sRevenge, etc
and they haven't done as well as I hoped.

[Audyssey] port issues was Re: game cracking

2008-08-01 Thread Yohandy
Hey Thomas,
What I meant was, that I turned off the firewall, and things still don't
work. You did say something about a port scan to determine what's blocked.
I'd definitely appreciate if you could do that. what info do I need to give
you? I'm also thinking that some other program is using the ports needed to
connect and that's why it doesn't work. is there a way to check which
program is using what port? thanks for your help!

 Hi Yohandy,
Turning off the Windows Firewall is actually pretty easy. If you have
the admin tools enabled on your start menu options you can go to admin
tools\services and stop the Windows Firewall service.

 Yohandy wrote:
I'm only using the windows firewall at the moment. I've tried disabling
 it
but no go. I will point out though that I have installed other firewall
products in the past, most recently the comodo firewall, and there's
 always
a chance that there were some files left behind when I uninstalled it,
 and
that's what's causing the problem. I've checked the registry and can't
 find
anything though. I've probably checked every support forum on the
 internet
for similar problems and I still can't figure it out. this is definitely
 mysterious.

 Hi Yohandy,
Well, the first step is to varify port x is actually being blocked. To
do that you need a port scanner such as nmap which is a very good open
source tool for diagnosing networking problems like this.
In the case of ftp the port you need to check is port 21That is usually
the port ftp runs on, and some firewalls do block that port unless you
 reconfigure them.
As for finding out what is running on a certain port usually you can
find out what is running on any given port. The way to do it largely
depends on the OS in question.

 Yohandy wrote:
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the problem is. now for the big
question. Is there a way I can check if certain ports are being used for
 any
applications? Since ftp and online registration are both blocked, this
 must
be a port or range of ports. it is certainly frustrating, and I've been
trying to figure this out for months.
