Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread dark
Well tom, it is a weapon that's always confused me a litle, hence my
desire for a spear, and even more my desire for a spear with history.

the ability to be upgraded in game isn't limited to whip's though. following
the same castlevania model you could start out with a short wooden spear,
then get a metal spear, then a long metal pike for bigger range, though
you could always play even more with the idea.

suppose for instance, it was a holy spear which could both grow and extend
your reach, and have it's tip transmute into harder and harder substances
depending upon how many of a given power up, like a crusifix you found.

it could start with Iron, move on to steel, move on to obsidian, silver (not
realistically a good material for spear tips but has magical associations),
obsidian and finally diamond.

there is also a more practical advantage. just like in super Castlevania
you'd need different sounds for each level of whip, --- because obviously
swinging leather and swinging chain sound vastly different.

A spear however, whatever it's tip was made from and however long it's
shaft, would probably sound pretty similar whatever happened, all you'd
need is for Sapi to speak how powered up your spear was as needed.

Beware the grue!

Hi Dark,
HInteresting suggestion. I guess the only question is how much
like true Castlevania do we want to go with this remake. Personally I
don't have a problem giving our hero a spear, stake, or some other special
vampire weapon instead of a whip, but the whip is very classic
Castlevania. Without the whip it would be missing a core element of the
game.
As you pointed out yourself perhaps the best part of the whip is that you
could upgrade it with a more powerful whip until you got the long chain
whip. That was definitely one of the better weapons in the game, and gave
you a lot of attack range and could dispatch monsters quickly. Although,
as we both said killing Dracula with a chain whip is pretty unrealistic
and strange. So using something else might be better story wise.

dark wrote:

Sinse however you can't use either the Belmonts, the vampire killer whip
or the castlvania name, why not take the oppertunity to give your
hero a more realistic vampire slaying weapon, My suggestion would be
a biblically significant spear, but there are plenty of other things
you could choose which would imho make more sense than the whip.

Btw, if I remember rightly the whip's actual material changed with power
ups, it started as lether, then after the player collected five weapon
hearts became chain and correspondingly more powerful, and after
another ten would become a long chain morning star with lots of reach.

I know the weapon has always been a whip, I've also got the Nes
classics addition of original Castlevania for the gameboy advanced, so have
seen it in the very first game.

Nevertheless, sinse tom cannot use either the name castlevania, the belmont
family, or! the vampire killer whip (though that name might not be
copywrited), why not make a virtue out of necessity and include a weapon
with some decent, real world biblical significance.

Hi Hayden,
Shortly I will be redesigning the whole website, and with that comes the
intensely tedious task of link sorting.

When the site reappears there should be no broken links.
I'm hoping to do this round about Christmas time.

Damien.

Hi Dark,
HInteresting suggestion. I guess the only question is how much
like true Castlevania do we want to go with this remake. Personally I
don't have a problem giving our hero a spear, stake, or some other

Castlevania. Without the whip it would be missing a core element of the

As you pointed out yourself perhaps the best part of the whip is that

For now, however, for those who are wondering, the cheats key for Acefire
is

CTRL+Shift+F8.
As for the games site, thanks. For some reason I thought it was
games.liamerven.com, but maybe that was my mix up because it was that kind
of address on Asmodean.
Thanks.

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering, what happened to the games page that used to be
asmodean.net?
Last I knew, games.asmodean.net had been taken down, temporarily to go on

Have I missed anything? Is it hosted elsewhere? I've lost all the

Thanks.

Hi, I have been into audio games for a while, but recently have been
thinking. I have seen many audio games, but what I have realized is

Are there any audio games out there that people could recomend that
someone could play multiple times without the exact same reaction from
the game? I don't mean any offense to the audio game developers on
the list, I am just wondering about something that has been bugging me
for quite some time now.

Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread dark
Indeed tom, I have a copy of the stories to both Super castlevania and
original nes castlevania kicking around somewhere.

Sinse however you can't use either the Belmonts, the vampire killer whip or
the castlvania name, why not take the oppertunity to give your hero a
more realistic vampire slaying weapon, My suggestion would be a
biblically significant spear, but there are plenty of other things you
could choose which would imho make more sense than the whip.

Btw, if I remember rightly the whip's actual material changed with power
ups, it started as lether, then after the player collected five weapon
hearts became chain and correspondingly more powerful, and after
another ten would become a long chain morning star with lots of reach.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, I thought the blessed whip was a bit of a strange weapon too, but
hey it's a game. Not everything has to make sense right?

Anyway, I do recall from reading the little Castlevania story included
with the game Simon Belmont's chosen weapon was a leather whip called the
Vampire Killer. He enters Dracula's castle, Castlevania, in order to slay
Dracula. Of course before he can do that he has to fight all kinds of
monsters before he reaches Dracula.

I haven't sat down and thought much about the game's story, weapons, etc
but for copyright reasons obviously it won't exactly be the Castlevaniawe
know. Many of the monsters will be the same, but I'll have a new hero,
back story, music, and of course will draw my own level maps of the
castle.

I do hope members of the community can provide some sufficiently
atmospheric music to the game, sinse that's a Snes soundtrack which has
always greatly impressed me with it's diversity.

One thing though, i did always think having a whip to kill vampires with
was rather an odd weapon, - though i suspect it was included more for
the gameplay mechanics of swinging on hooks and the like than realism.

Perhaps if your redoing a similar game you could give the main character
a more logical weapon, such as a magic holy spear.

there are afterall well known historical archetypes of holy spears which
were said to have properties against the undead such as the spear King

Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread dark
I know the weapon has always been a whip, I've also got the Nes
classics addition of original Castlevania for the gameboy advanced, so have
seen it in the very first game.

Nevertheless, sinse tom cannot use either the name castlevania, the belmont
family, or! the vampire killer whip (though that name might not be
copywrited), why not make a virtue out of necessity and include a weapon
with some decent, real world biblical significance.

The reason for the whip was that it was the chosen weapon of the Belmonts.
It was a blessed whip called the vampire killer. Even before games like
Super Castlevania where you could swing on things with it, it was a whip.
Not sure why, but I think separating the Belmont family from their trusty
whip would be a sad thing indeed.

Hi Dark,
Yeah. As it happens I have plans to do a good audio Castlevania as soon
as

I can get Mysteries of the Ancients completed. The main hangup is finding
high quality halloween and horror sounds to do the game justice. Plus I
am

looking for some nice halloween theme music to give it that truly dark
and

ominous feeling while exploring Dracula's castle. Part of me wanted to do
an FPS version, but I wouldn't mind doing a side-scroller version as the
original games were that way.
The best part of it is that all of the monsters are in the public domain.
So the only copyrights that really apply is the name --- which can easily
be changed --- and the music --- which I don't really need.

dark wrote:

Hi tom.

sounds great, though I'd probably have to annotate several faqs in
order to play it successfully.

Fighting real world monsters is always something I liked in the
castlevania games where bosses are the likes of Frankenstein's monster,
a

mummy, a skeletal Horseman and of course Dracula's best friend, the
Grim reaper.

Something like that in audio would be great indeed.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Yeah, I thought the blessed whip was a bit of a strange weapon too, but
hey it's a game. Not everything has to make sense right?

Anyway, I do recall from reading the little Castlevania story included
with the game Simon Belmont's chosen weapon was a leather whip called
the Vampire Killer. He enters Dracula's castle, Castlevania, in order to
slay Dracula. Of course before he can do that he has to fight all kinds
of monsters before he reaches Dracula.

I haven't sat down and thought much about the game's story, weapons, etc
but for copyright reasons obviously it won't exactly be the
Castlevaniawe know. Many of the monsters will be the same, but I'll have
a new hero, back story, music, and of course will draw my own level maps
of the castle.

I do hope members of the community can provide some sufficiently
atmospheric music to the game, sinse that's a Snes soundtrack which
has always greatly impressed me with it's diversity.

One thing though, i did always think having a whip to kill vampires
with was rather an odd weapon, - though i suspect it was included
more for the gameplay mechanics of swinging on hooks and the like than
realism.

Perhaps if your redoing a similar game you could give the main
character a more logical weapon, such as a magic holy spear.

there are afterall well known historical archetypes of holy spears
which were said to have properties against the undead such as the
spear King richard used during the crusades, the lances belonging to
various angels, most especially the lance of loginus, and of course
the spear which was used to wound christ upon the cross.

some people may find that objectionable in a game it is true,
though personally I don't see it as any worse than a film such as
raiders of the lost Arc or the Last crusade where Indiana Jones was
trying to retrieve the holy graille.

Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread Ryan Strunk
The reason for the whip was that it was the chosen weapon of the Belmonts.
It was a blessed whip called the vampire killer. Even before games like
Super Castlevania where you could swing on things with it, it was a whip.
Not sure why, but I think separating the Belmont family from their trusty
whip would be a sad thing indeed.

I'll keep this brief and to the point. It's the current editor Ron, back
from a rather lengthy and undesired absense.
I'm not going into any detail here but suffice it to say I'm still going
to continue with the Audyssey magazine. I'm now challenged with catching
up
on any of the news since approximately mid August, and hope to have an
issue

out the door quite soon. Anything anyone sent me previously it might be a
good idea if you still have copies to resend it to be included for the
upcoming edition of the holiday season.
Okay before I ramble too much Glad to be back in the gaming loop.

Hi.
yep, you are missing a depenndency. Vista has that dependency, windows7
doesn't. I had the same problem. when you upgraded desktop to win7 from vista,
it kept the vista stuff installed, which means you were already set and ready
to go. You're still missing some sort of dependency for win7. Just not sure
what to tell you it is. I'd say try installing dotnet framework 3.5, make sure
you have visual c++ installed, check you got the latest version of direct x.

  Hi all,

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents about Q9 and netbooks. If it works on a
netbook, that's good, but I'd be surprised if it's as smooth as its intended to
be. This is for the simple reason that many netbooks are too slow to support
the game. I've been told that version 1.0.1 works better on netbooks, but it's
really a hit and miss situation. I would not recommend netbooks but of course I
will still doo my best to make the game use as little processing power as
possible, one thing that I worked on for 1.0.1. Anyone who's having trouble
should try that version and see how it goes.

  Kind regards,

Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9

2009-11-19 Thread dark
funny tom, I'm actually replaying super castlevania on the snes at the
moment myself (though currently I'm rather stuck on the 7th world, too
many blasted axe knights!).

I do hope members of the community can provide some sufficiently atmospheric
music to the game, sinse that's a Snes soundtrack which has always greatly
impressed me with it's diversity.

One thing though, i did always think having a whip to kill vampires with was
rather an odd weapon, - though i suspect it was included more for the
gameplay mechanics of swinging on hooks and the like than realism.

Perhaps if your redoing a similar game you could give the main character a
more logical weapon, such as a magic holy spear.

there are afterall well known historical archetypes of holy spears which
were said to have properties against the undead such as the spear King
richard used during the crusades, the lances belonging to various angels,
most especially the lance of loginus, and of course the spear which was used
to wound christ upon the cross.

some people may find that objectionable in a game it is true, though
personally I don't see it as any worse than a film such as raiders of the
lost Arc or the Last crusade where Indiana Jones was trying to retrieve the
holy graille.

Hi Dark,
Yeah. As it happens I have plans to do a good audio Castlevania as soon as
I can get Mysteries of the Ancients completed. The main hangup is finding
high quality halloween and horror sounds to do the game justice. Plus I am
looking for some nice halloween theme music to give it that truly dark and
ominous feeling while exploring Dracula's castle. Part of me wanted to do
an FPS version, but I wouldn't mind doing a side-scroller version as the
original games were that way.
The best part of it is that all of the monsters are in the public domain.
So the only copyrights that really apply is the name --- which can easily
be changed --- and the music --- which I don't really need.

dark wrote:

sounds great, though I'd probably have to annotate several faqs in
order to play it successfully.

Fighting real world monsters is always something I liked in the
castlevania games where bosses are the likes of Frankenstein's monster, a
mummy, a skeletal Horseman and of course Dracula's best friend, the
Grim reaper.

Something like that in audio would be great indeed.

Beware the grue!

Yup.

Got them here still, but can't play them since even though can run them and
hear the old tunes that bring back memories, they don't work with screen
readers at all even though the very first one, kings quest 1, did basically
also just work on text commands, but, yes, got a few IF games can play with
winfrotz TTS, including a version of leisure suit larry, which was also
created by sierra games, same as the actual quest games - kings quest, space
quest and police quest, where you even did a bit of driving around...LOL!

Like said in other mail, am what I suppose gets called a newly VI/blind guy,

i've heard good things about those old quest games, though sinse I've
never been aable to read normal text and only used screen readers with
windows I've never had the chance.

while I've played plenty of old If sinse then, it's been limited to what I
could run through the various interpreters, and the odd version of a
classic which some kind person has made compatible with the console window
in Xp such as Eamon delux.

It might sound funny to say though, but as I was born in 1982 and the
first computer I ever used was a toshiba laptop at school with Hal v3.2
and windows 3.1 in 1993 (which it never even occurred to me could play
games at all), I'm probably a litle too young to remember pre-windows
games or screen reading software.

My first PC was an old XT, with something like dos 1.1, around the late
80s,
and there's a dos virtual machine you can get that runs something like
3.1
called dosbox, but don't think it's really usable along with a
screenreader.

In those days on an XT I remember playing the interactive fiction game of
the Hobbit - and now have the winfrotz TTS version thereof, but primarily
on
486es and pentiums we played things like kings quest, space quest, etc. -
my
home computer is still called RogerWilco, and my home networking
workgroup

is SpaceQuest.

I still remember in 1994 when had my first formal job as software support
guy that I was really irritated when they made me look into using windows
3.1 as well...LOL!

The joke is think have built around 300 plus PCs from scratch in the old
days from hardware up to operating systems etc. etc., but nowadays not
sure
would want to try too hard to look into low level hardware, and still
want
to find a reliable/efficient way to get into the BIOS of a

it was a toshiba 1850 with 386sx cpu 4mb ram and 80mb hard drive and a

Ofcause it did not stay that way in 1994 I dropped the system and I got

After a little hacking I got it so I could use the regon of ram that was
used for mono video I have no idea what that did to the actual card as I
made the system think it was a colour card.

over that though everything else was good.
I havn't ever gone below dos 5.0 and 6.22 though I have seen someone
that had 3.20.

I have seen an old mac 2gs and lc1 systems though.
I have seen an old amega or was it c64 playing lemmings as well as an

Re: [Audyssey] q9 on netbook

2009-11-19 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Scott,

As you say, that sound issue is not netbook related; it's got to do with
DirectSound and certain hardware. It's been acknowledged by Microsoft, and
not much can really be done to resolve it at the application level. I have
experienced it on some machines, while on my own and a whole bunch of other
machines that I have tried it on everything works flawlessly. It is thus not
a sound editing issue, as I am very particular when trimming and fading the
edges of all my sounds.

As for the performance improvement, it is not very noticeable in the jungle
world; it's especially apparent in the cave and death world. That's where
people report the most difference.

Kind regards,

Hi Philip,

The transition issue isn't something that affects actual playability,
but I'm getting pops between speech clips that are particularly
noticeable when speech files are playing on their own to announce
levels and points and the like. The only thing I can liken it too is
that I've heard similar things occur when I've placed two sounds to
play one after the other in various audio sinarios if both have been
meticulously topped and tailed without any sort of crossfade between
them. At a guess that's what's happening here, because it doesn't
seem to be netbook specific (it happens on a much higher spec laptop
with a different sound chipset that I also have activated Q9 on).

Not a biggy, but I hope that helps you identify whether the problem is
happening at your end too.

1.0.1 seems slightly snappier to me, but it's a marginal difference.
I haven't played through any further than the end of the Jungle world
on the netbook, but up until that point it seems playable here so long
as you don't have too many other tasks fighting it for resources.

On 11/19/09, Philip Bennefall wrote:

Hmm, having played through a few more levels I'm starting to see what
you mean a bit. Transitions between voiceover clips aren't
particularly pleasant, and I can notice a performance hit when a
background task suddenly demands some juice out of the poor thing.

1.0.1 seemed a long way from unplayable if a tad jurky, though I've
got no idea how it'd fair once you get to something like the death
world.

Re: [Audyssey] q9 on netbook

2009-11-19 Thread Scott Chesworth

[Audyssey] Game recordings site

2009-11-19 Thread Damien C. Sadler
Hi guys,
I'm just wondering, what happened to the games page that used to be
asmodean.net?
Last I knew, games.asmodean.net had been taken down, temporarily to go on
games.liamerven.com. Now the games.liamerven.com site is down from what i can
see, and the asmodean version is still not back up.
Have I missed anything? Is it hosted elsewhere? I've lost all the recordings
and would like to download them again.
Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Well I'd offer my theremin to the project but as yet I'm not that good. But
some good theremin music or at least a theremin part in some of the tracks
might fit in quite well with such a game.

Hi Dark,

Something like that in audio would be great indeed.

Hi Michael,
Yes, in deed. Ron just resubscribed a little while ago, and I suspect
people will be hearing from him soon. He also e-mailed me off list, and
let me know why he was out of touch. So we should see a new Audyssey
issue sometime soon.

Hello everyone. You'll be pleased to hear that Ron has reappeared once

issue of Audyssey Magazine to his email address which is now active
again. It seems there was a miscommunication with his service provider
which took a while to sort out. He's in the process of re-subscribing
to this list and I have no doubt we'll hear something from the man
himself fairly soon.

How about appointing a temporaryediter who can take the reigns for a
while, hopefully until Ron gets back, just so that we stil have an
audeasy magazine come out to read.

I would offer myself, accept that betwene www.audiogames.nett and my
thesis I've got quite a bit on at the moment and probably couldn't devote
the time to this required, though if a magazine will be forthcoming,
I'll be glad to woffle up an artical.

I do think it'd be better to at least have a magazine in production,
rather than having this period drag on Ronlessly, -and if Ron comes
back and wishes to edit again, the temporary editer would work with him
to get the next issue out then gracefully step back into the wings,
no harm, no foul, and no mistake sinse obviously whoever was taking
up the post would know that this would not be a perminant position.

Just my suggestion to keep things going.

Hi Charles,
Unfortunately, no. Ron unsubscribed from the Audyssey list quite some
time back and he never resubscribed. I've tried e-mailing him as part
of the list moderators to inquire about the magazine, and I get a
message back that his e-mail account is no longer in service. I'm very
concerned, and I do worry that the Audyssey Magazine is no longer being
produced. At least until someone can contact Ron and get the scoop. I'd
offer to take over the job as editor, but without knowing Ron's
intentions neither I or anyone else is in a position to take over the
magazine without asking Ron first.

My first PC was an old XT, with something like dos 1.1, around the late
80s,

and there's a dos virtual machine you can get that runs something like 3.1
called dosbox, but don't think it's really usable along with a
screenreader.

In those days on an XT I remember playing the interactive fiction game of
the Hobbit - and now have the winfrotz TTS version thereof, but primarily
on
486es and pentiums we played things like kings quest, space quest, etc. -
my

home computer is still called RogerWilco, and my home networking workgroup
is SpaceQuest.

I still remember in 1994 when had my first formal job as software support
guy that I was really irritated when they made me look into using windows
3.1 as well...LOL!

The joke is think have built around 300 plus PCs from scratch in the old
days from hardware up to operating systems etc. etc., but nowadays not
sure

would want to try too hard to look into low level hardware, and still want
to find a reliable/efficient way to get into the BIOS of a
machine...

wow thats old, my first system was in 93
it was a toshiba 1850 with 386sx cpu 4mb ram and 80mb hard drive and a
mono screen.
Ofcause it did not stay that way in 1994 I dropped the system and I got a
reduced hdd out of all that.
After a little hacking I got it so I could use the regon of ram that was
used for mono video I have no idea what that did to the actual card as I
made the system think it was a colour card.

over that though everything else was good.
I havn't ever gone below dos 5.0 and 6.22 though I have seen someone that
had 3.20.

I have seen an old mac 2gs and lc1 systems though.
I have seen an old amega or was it c64 playing lemmings as well as an old
bbc system.
My aunt has an old 286 system but myself we have only owned pcs, 386 486
types.

Re: [Audyssey] entombed story?

2009-11-19 Thread dark
Well the story about how ekitrina ended up wandering the world of Sryth had
a lot more thinking behind it than this one, this was something I just
dashed off quickly.

Sadly, given the way the game's gone recently, I don't know if that's a
story which will ever be told unless I make the world generic and simply
have it as a fantasy short story in it's own right.

It's rather nice to get back to writing though after what seems quite a long
absense for me.

2009-11-19 Thread Jacob Kruger

My first PC was an old XT, with something like dos 1.1, around the late 80s,
and there's a dos virtual machine you can get that runs something like 3.1
called dosbox, but don't think it's really usable along with a screenreader.

In those days on an XT I remember playing the interactive fiction game of
the Hobbit - and now have the winfrotz TTS version thereof, but primarily on
486es and pentiums we played things like kings quest, space quest, etc. - my
home computer is still called RogerWilco, and my home networking workgroup
is SpaceQuest.

I still remember in 1994 when had my first formal job as software support
guy that I was really irritated when they made me look into using windows
3.1 as well...LOL!

The joke is think have built around 300 plus PCs from scratch in the old
days from hardware up to operating systems etc. etc., but nowadays not sure
would want to try too hard to look into low level hardware, and still want
to find a reliable/efficient way to get into the BIOS of a machine...

wow thats old, my first system was in 93
it was a toshiba 1850 with 386sx cpu 4mb ram and 80mb hard drive and a
mono screen.

Hmm, having played through a few more levels I'm starting to see what
you mean a bit. Transitions between voiceover clips aren't
particularly pleasant, and I can notice a performance hit when a
background task suddenly demands some juice out of the poor thing.

1.0.1 seemed a long way from unplayable if a tad jurky, though I've
got no idea how it'd fair once you get to something like the death

Hi tom.

sounds great, though I'd probably have to annotate several faqs in
order to play it successfully.

Fighting real world monsters is always something I liked in the castlevania
games where bosses are the likes of Frankenstein's monster, a mummy, a
skeletal Horseman and of course Dracula's best friend, the Grim reaper.

Something like that in audio would be great indeed.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, Battle of Olympus was full of ancient Greek mythology, and had
plenty of mythical creatures to beat on your way to Hades. Just off the
top of my head some of the enemy bosses were the Hydra, Centaur, Cyclops,
Minotaur, siren, Lamia, and Cerberus.
The cool thing was once you killed them all guess what happened. Well,
when you finally made it to Hades to fight the big man himself you had to
fight all of the monsters you killed in the game first. Lol!
Although, it was marketed as a side-scroller in many ways that counted the
game was more like an early roll playing game. You had to enter your
heroes name plus the way the game world was laid out you unlocked certain
levels by completing certain adventures or finding certain items. In other
words it was not your typical linear side-scroller, but was played in the
order in which you completed adventures. For that reason alone it was
pretty unique for an early NES game.

dark wrote:
wow tom! the game got as far into mythos as having hades helmet of
darkness? --- I'm greatly impressed and quite sorry i've never had the
chance to play it.

Adventure island sounds a bit like an old amiga title called Chuck rock,
in which you played a cave man trying to rescue his wife from the evil
Garry gritter, another cave man!

sound effects and in game text were hilarious, as were many of the
bosses including a tiger which literally turned you white with fear when
it growled, - and a T Rex with boxing gloves.

You also defeated enemies by bouncing them with your belly, --- which was
unique indeed!

obviously, another point of the game was picking up, carrying and
chucking rocks, sometimes using them to solve various puzles
involving steps and ledges.

there was a sequal, chuck rock II which had you playing as Chuck junior

Being bought out far later on the amiga, it was a much more advanced game

attacks involving a club.

you could also ride various dinosaurs and other creatures in that game
too, including a mountain goat at one stage which jumped really high
and didn't slip on ice.

these sorts of comparatively symple, but vertically complex games in
audio would be very nice to see, -especially if they could have such

Hmm, having played through a few more levels I'm starting to see what
you mean a bit. Transitions between voiceover clips aren't
particularly pleasant, and I can notice a performance hit when a
background task suddenly demands some juice out of the poor thing.

1.0.1 seemed a long way from unplayable if a tad jurky, though I've
got no idea how it'd fair once you get to something like the death
world.

[Audyssey] Q9 and netbooks

2009-11-19 Thread Philip Bennefall

Philip Bennefall

Hi Charles,
Unfortunately, no. Ron unsubscribed from the Audyssey list quite some time
back and he never resubscribed. I've tried e-mailing him as part of the
list moderators to inquire about the magazine, and I get a message back
that his e-mail account is no longer in service. I'm very concerned, and I
do worry that the Audyssey Magazine is no longer being produced. At least
until someone can contact Ron and get the scoop. I'd offer to take over
the job as editor, but without knowing Ron's intentions neither I or
anyone else is in a position to take over the magazine without asking Ron
first.

Re: [Audyssey] audio game question

2009-11-19 Thread Scott Chesworth
Entombed all the way for this one. I've finished the part of it that
people are testing now several times and never had a similar run
through because of the randomisation of enemies items and dungen
layouts, that's before you even get into the different strategies for
each type of character who's likely to end up becoming part of your
party.

I'm fairly sure that Entombed won't be for everyone, but equally sure
that if it pushes a button for you you'll have a new favourite game.

Something about a never-ending mode where enemies kept coming at you and you
fought them off until you just couldn't survive anymore. A lot of old Atari

Subject: [Audyssey] Q9 upcoming change log

Hi again folks,

I am working on a 1.0.1 update release of the Q9 game which, of course,
will

be free for all registered users. So far, the change log looks like this:

Version 1.0.1:
Added: The alt key can now be used to quickly cycle between your weapons.
Added: A section on saving games is now present in the manual.
Added: Anchor links to the manual which will enable quicker navigation.
Fixed: Fortune fields will no longer create mysterious ghost enemies.
Fixed: Fortune fields can no longer be generated in the middle of a pit.
Fixed: The sounds of the deus shield have been lowered slightly.
Fixed: Going to a new world from the bonus level by using a cheat code now
works properly.

Version 1.0:
Initial release.

I will be adding the other game mode and score posting in the 1.1 release
most likely as it takes a little more work, this is mainly a
bugfix/general

improvement patch. Is there anything else that any of you want to see
changed?

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Seen it running on a totally stock Samsung NC10 here and all seemed

Yeah. I personally really liked a lot of the music, but the music for
Tartarus and the battle with Hades was pretty disappointing. I don't even
know if he actually did anything to attack you. I found a series of videos
on YOutube where someone played the game all the way through. It was pretty
cool to listen to that.

Hi Bryan,
Yeah, in terms of actual game play the battle with Hades was a major
disappointment. After you collected all of the special items from the
various gods and goddesses you were more powerful than Hades when it came
to actual firepower and speed. The hardest part of the battle was
defeating his invisibility helmet and once you did that he was a push
over. A few hits from the divine sword and he dropped dead freeing the
soul of your girl friend from Tartarus.
All the same, though, the game was pretty fun. I liked it for its
mythology and plotline more than the game play itself. Several of the
battles were major letdowns in terms of difficulty, but were made up for
in story content and plotline.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

or after dinner. But we never completed it. We got as far as getting the
third Fragment of Love (although I do believe we missed the second
because my mom couldn't remember how or where to use the Crystal Eye).
That and we never got the Sword of Hephaestos (AKA the Divine Sword),
since we could never find his temple. So we never did get to Tartarus to
fight Hades. As I understand it though that fight was rather
anticlimactic. But I'd love to see a game based on that in audio form.
That and my all-time favorite NES game, StarTropics.

One thing I can say is I had a problemperforming jumps until I

For those with Macs using Fusion jumping is harder than it should
be to say the least. When I press Up+Right no matter how fast I
press right I jump right into it. I've been able to get past the
pits but I don't have this problem with Mota or SL, so I'm not sure
what's going on with this game. I do believe it's a Fusion problem,
which is a shame, as it's a game I'm interested in. I beat the

Other than Fusion problems, the game itself is nice. Love the music.

For those with Macs using Fusion jumping is harder than it should be

right I jump right into it. I've been able to get past the pits but
I don't have this problem with Mota or SL, so I'm not sure what's
going on with this game. I do believe it's a Fusion problem, which
is a shame, as it's a game I'm interested in. I beat the demo, but
it took longer than I thought.

Other than Fusion problems, the game itself is nice. Love the music.

Hi Philip,
I want to commend you on an outstanding product. This side-scroller
reminds me a lot of the classic side-scrollers I use to play on the
Nintendo like Donkey Kong, Super Mario, etc. In a way it is much
better than those given the random enemies, extra strength, extra
lives, good voiceover work you did, high quality sounds, and good
music. It is well worth the $25.00 to $30.00 you plan to charge for
it.

Hello everyone,

I wish to officially announce the release of the Q9 Action Game.
For those of you not familiar with it, it's a sidescroller entirely
based on sound with 12 exciting levels containning a hoard of
enemies and other dangers to make your way through.

You have to guide the little alien Q9 through four different worlds
with three levels in each, and help him to find his spaceship so
that he can return back to his own planet. The game features a lot
of high quality sound effects, an original orchestral score as well
as numerous cut scenes with slightly morbid humor.

For more information, please visit us on the web at www.blastbay.com.

Enjoy!

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

I bought the game just about an hour ago, and am on Death world level 1, on
easy. This is a ton of fun to play. Was wondering a few things:
Are the pits random as well or just the enemies?
How does the points system work?
Are the level lengths constant or random?
This is one of the better games I've played, for sure.

No time right now, but I did listen to some of that music you have up on

2009-11-19 Thread Bryan Peterson
Battle of Olympus? Wow I should have been keeping up better with this
particular thread. I loved that game. In fact my mom, who used to hate video
games with a passion, often used to devote at least a few hours of each
evening to that game after I got home from school, sometimes before or after
dinner. But we never completed it. We got as far as getting the third
Fragment of Love (although I do believe we missed the second because my mom
couldn't remember how or where to use the Crystal Eye). That and we never
got the Sword of Hephaestos (AKA the Divine Sword), since we could never
find his temple. So we never did get to Tartarus to fight Hades. As I
understand it though that fight was rather anticlimactic. But I'd love to
see a game based on that in audio form. That and my all-time favorite NES
game, StarTropics.

Hi Dark,
Yeah, Battle of Olympus was full of ancient Greek mythology, and had
plenty of mythical creatures to beat on your way to Hades.
For that reason alone it was
pretty unique for an early NES game.

dark wrote:

Adventure island sounds a bit like an old amiga title called Chuck rock,
in which you played a cave man trying to rescue his wife from the evil
Garry gritter, another cave man!

sound effects and in game text were hilarious, as were many of the
bosses including a tiger which literally turned you white with fear when
it growled, - and a T Rex with boxing gloves.

You also defeated enemies by bouncing them with your belly, --- which was
unique indeed!

obviously, another point of the game was picking up, carrying and
chucking rocks, sometimes using them to solve various puzles
involving steps and ledges.

there was a sequal, chuck rock II which had you playing as Chuck junior
trying to rescue his dad from Garry Gritter's brother, evil brick
jagger!

Being bought out far later on the amiga, it was a much more advanced game
with far better music sounds and graphics, and a more intricate system of
attacks involving a club.

you could also ride various dinosaurs and other creatures in that game
too, including a mountain goat at one stage which jumped really high
and didn't slip on ice.

these sorts of comparatively symple, but vertically complex games in
audio would be very nice to see, -especially if they could have such
a great system as the battle for olympus you mention.

[Audyssey] First computer

2009-11-19 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Jacob,

I got my first PC in 1980. It was a Texas Instruments 99 4a home
computer. It came with a Basic programming language and the manual had
programming examples. I typed in the programming examples and experimented with them trying to learn what the different Basic commands did and how to use them. I also bought
an Microsoft Extended Basic programming cartridge for it. The Texas
Instruments 99 4a computer had no hard or floppy drive. I bought a
cable that connected to a tape recorder and that was how I saved the games that I created on it. My second computer was an Atari 800 XL home computer. I also bought an Microsoft Extended Basic programming cartridge for it as well as many game cartridges and an external five and a quarter floppy drive unit. My next computer was
an IBM PC Jr. It had a programming language named BasicA as well as GW
Basic. It also had two five and a quarter floppy drives built in. I
bought my first talking computer in December of 1989. It was an NEC 286 16 MHZ with a 20 meg hard drive. It ran Jaws for dos version 1.0 with an Accent SA hardware synthesizer. I programmed in GW Basic and Quick Basic 4.5 on it. At first I didn't know how to make Quick Basic programs work correctly with Jaws, so I wrote Jaws script
files to go with the games. Later I did learn how to make the games
work correctly with all of the dos screen readers. In the year 2000 I
started writing games for windows in Visual Basic 4.0. I couldn't figure out how to make the games so that all of the windows screen readers would read the text, so I started making the games self voicing by use of recorded Eloquence speech. I am now creating the games for windows in Visual Basic 6.0 and using the Microsoft

sapi5 text to speech engine to make the games self voicing.

BTW The Atari 800 XL had 64k of ram just like the C64. It did not have a sound
synthesizer like the C64, but did have 4 sound channels. I also had a speech
synthesizer program for it. Not a screen reader. It would just say anything
that you typed in.

eloquence for the win... this thing is very! sensitive to pronounciation
errors. write something like i am, with the i in lower case and it sounds
different enough to fix. I had many spelling errors at school thanks to them
using hal with orpheus... at one point I've just had enough and spend a
whole lesson that I was supposed to be in word for installing a better tts
voice on there.

Hi che.

no, that's a consequence of me never having seen the written word, and
doing

most of my reading concerning the system using hal.

also, on the few occasions I've gone through the word letter by letter, a
couple of the turrican fan sites which are run by Germans spell it with an
r

at the end.

I don't know if this is a german thing or just a specific typo on their
point.

I'm afraid other than when actually writing something hugely official, ---
like my phd or serious letters, I tend to go on a basis that if I can
reaed

it with hal and it comes out okay, i don't have to bother with spelling.

i can of course run a spell check, or even set Hal to tell me when
spelling mistakes are highlighted by windows programs, but frankly,
most of the time I'm too lazy!

this has occasionally caused annoyences with interactive fiction, but
other than that it tends to work.

Beware the grue!

Hi dark,
Is that a typo or did folks call the Amiga the Amigar in Britain?
I can promise you the name was definitely Amiga as in Spanish for lady
friend over here.

Nice bit of history there che.

As I was only 8 when we got our first one in 1990, I wasn't aware of
anything besides the fact it had amazing games which looked and sounded
fantastic!

I probably owe the forceable recovery of what vision I have now after I
lost

my best eye at the age of 7, my love of games, and indeed my love of
music with interesting cords, all to the Amigar in general, and the
turrican games in particular!

Not to say there weren't other fantastic titles for the machine though.

i stil! think moonstone would make an amazing audio game, a
multiplayer

mix of rpg and beat em up where you took turns wandering around a map
speaking to wizards, gambling in inns and doing magical rituals at stone
henge, interspersed with going into lairs to fight various one on
one

battles with groups of monsters (who attacked you one at a time), in a
real
time, bet em up fashion.

you could of course challenge other knights as well.

One of the most memorable things about the game was it's major amounts of
gore! apparently it was enspired by the holy grale black knight fight, so
you could chop of arms, legs and heads with ease (and as I said, this was
a
good two years before mortal combat!).

The most amusing thing was that the monsters each had an instant kill
tactic

you had to watch out for, which were hillarious! from the giant ogre
like ballocs who could jump on you and squash you to a bloody pulp,
or
even grab you by the kneck so hard your head popped off! To the rat men
who
could impail you with their large pikes, and the dragon, who'd pick
you

up in his large mouth and literally bight you in half!

You can read about the game, including descriptions of the various
deaths and other game elements, as well as check out some animated
sequences

(complete with bloody sounds), at http://www.moonstonetavern.co.uk/

they've even got a pre-configured winuae amigar emulation version running
moonstone, but it'd deffinately require sighted assistance owing to
the

large amounts of text in the rpg portions of the game (I used to play it
with my brother and friend, who'd read the associated text for me, and
let

me do the fighting when it was my character's turn).

Beware the grue!

Dark.
