Hi Bryan.

You must've started Sryth slightly earlier than I did, as I first began
in january of 2005.

I admit I was probably a litle too strong in my E-mail, I just am
rather sorry to see a game I've had so much fun with become rather grasping
as I believe it has.

Ce I am enjoying a lot, but I tend to like exploration so it sutes me.

If you're that dissatisfied with Sryth then write to the GM with your
concerns. I personally am still quite happy with the game, and I've been
playing since October of '04. Sryth is not only the first truly accessible
online RPG I was ever introduced to but it's the ONLY one that's
consistently kept my interest in all the time that I've played it. Neither
Kingdom of Loathing nor even Core Exiles has managed to do that. Then
again I'm more of a fantasy fan than a Sci-Fi one so it's not entirely
surprising that I eventually lost interest in CE. But Sryth has always
managed to hold onto my interest. True I do manage to access most of the
content but in all honesty I don't donate all that much and not often.
Anyway you don't have to buy a residence to enjoy most of the game. I just
think of the adventures associated with them as, for lack of a better
term, side effects. And anyway there really aren't many of those yet so
you really aren't missing much.

Well, I neither mind donating nor subscribing to a game, --- -with Sryth
though I think it's gone far too far really, sinse now your needing to
get more game content by spending adventurer tocans on things like
residences and the quick stone, apart from the fact that the gap
betwene those who spend a lot of money on tocans to up their gear, and
those who do not (and the corrisponding difficulty of some of the game
encounters), is just growing.

Ce is also a business, and works on the same model as Sryth, in that
you subscribe to get some basic bennifits such as extra fuel, then can
buy game extras. One of their key tennits though is game extras must
never unbalance things, so no fueling your combat ability with power
alone.

Also there is no urge to donate to get extra content, as with Sryth
and the quests.

I'm actually rather sad to see where Sryth has gone, being as I
played from 2005 onwards. I admit though, when I start up the game and
told I need to pay At's to access a quest via buying a residence, or
that my melee rating needs to be another 20 points higher which just
won't happen unless I donate even more cash, I decided it was too
much, and that from somebody who has already donated significantly
to the game.

I do drop in occasionally to see what can be done, but not too often
I admit.

If it sounds as if I'm being unreasonable, bare in mind the mechanics. 20
dollars a year, and the game has at least 5000 paying customers or
more, What's the need to squeeze for more money.

Donation bennifits to games should be just a nice thank you, not a
necessity for getting game content.

I have a mind to E-mail the Gm and express my dissatisfaction with the
game at some point.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Sryth was: Q Nine Instructions

2009-12-15 Thread Bryan Peterson
Well I'm not the GM, but if I know him he'll give any criticisms or whatnot
that you send him their due consideration. To be quite frank I think the
real problem is those people, few though they may be, who donate so much
that they're able to buyevery high-end item Tallys' offers, then level up
all skills and powers to 100 on the same go. Then they blow their way
through what would otherwise be a reasonably challenging adventure and
complain it's too easy. In his efforts to balance that out the GM may have
gone a bit overboard. But if I know him at all I don't see him dismissing
your comments out of hand if you did write him.

2009-12-15 Thread Ch.B.
Yesterday there was a news item about the 2009 VGA awards in LA.
I thought it was really cool, as one of the invited VIP people was Singer
Stevie Wonder, who I greatly admire.
Anyway he made a small speech about how he wishes that videogames, in the
future, would be made accessible to all disabled gamers as well. I just
thought this was very cool of him to say this.
Also since he is a celebrity and this aired on tv maybe it helped the cause,
even in a small way and raised awareness about blind gamers wanting to play
mainstream games.
Just thought I'd share this with you guys in case you have not been aware of
the awards thing taking place

[Audyssey] Core-Exiles

2009-12-15 Thread David Chittenden

Hello,

I find Core-Exiles to be quite accessible. I am using Jaws on a Vista
office machine with IE 8. I could not get it to work properly with
FireFox (which they suggest). The game requires a fair amount of
strategic thinking. If you ever played the old Trade Wars from a BBS,
parts of the game are similar (at least for strategy).

That would be Core Exiles. I tried it for a while but I sort of lost
interest in it. You might try Sryth at www.sryth.com if you haven't
already. It's accessible, has a lot of content and at only 20 bucks a
year for a full account it's well worth it. And if you want you can
donate extra money to the game, even if it happens to be ten dollars
here and there. But again that's completely up to you. But you do get
rewards for donating even ten dollars to the game. Some might regard
this as the gamemaster being greedy but frankly I can totally
understand. For one thing Sryth is actually his job, and I do mean
that literally. And in any case he doesn't hold a virtual gun to your
head and say donate or else! The decision is still completely up to
you as to whether or not you do donate. True some content is only
available if you've accomplished certain feats in the game (such as
buying a grand residence), which are sometimes made easier through
donations. but if you really wanted to and were really determined you
could go without donating and still get the most out of it.

Why offlist? that's what this list is for.

In the Q9 program group on the start menue is a link saying
manual which leads to an html manual with all the instructions.

As a quick guide though, left and right walk, spacebar use weapon,
hold ctrl to run, alt to cycle weapons, up arrow then tap arrows to
jump left or right.

Note that there are several sights where you can find out a lot
about games. such as www.audiogames.net and www.pcsgames.nett which
have handy links and (in the case of audiogames.net), a game

2009-12-15 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I do think a feature of jumping farther in MOTA with control plus shift plus
right arrow would be an interesting way to get over longer chasms or fires.
Realistically running or jumping should cause more creatures to show up as
you are making more noise then just walking.
But jus like swinging your sword or dagger maybe running should reduce your
strength.

The advantage is that a torch will last more rooms if you run through them.
But in reality, walking should show you more objects than when running as
you have more time to examine everything.

Phil

2009-12-15 Thread Charles Rivard
It makes more sense to me to have a keystroke to move faster than to slow
down. It takes more, not less, energy to move faster. Therefore, it should
take more, rather than less, keystrokes to do the same thing. And for a
beginning gamer, this would also be better, as they would not have to use an
extra keystroke to walk normally, which doesn't make sense, anyway.

 Hi Dark,
The problem lies when you are playing the game for the first time and you
don't know what is around you, you are bound to walk slowly, as you do in

 Hi Tom.

What you mention the tomb rader series using sounds a lot like the system
prince of persia pioneered in 1991, which similarly featured innumerable
spike traps throughout the game which you had to get around, as well
as the necessity to sneak to the edge of ledges in order to climb down
 from them.

As I said, if longer running jumps or dash attacks were introduced (even
original mario brothers had long running jumps, --- -allbeit with a
penalty of stopping distance), I could certainly see the point of a run
mode, but it just seems that in games like Q9 and superliam, and
mota as it stands now, it doesn't serve too much purpose other than
getting you through the levels faster, which you should probably be
 doing by default anyway.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Hi Damien,
That's true, but the feature is still available. It is jus that they
have to use say shift+arrow to walk instead of pressing the arrow key by
itself.

Hi Phil,
Yeah, but I've already reserved the control+shift+arrow commands for
crawl left and crawl right. So I'm sort of running out of keyboard commands.
However, since I'm rewriting the engine in C++ and will likely use SDL
for the input core I should be able to use the alt key as well. Then I
can move jump to alt freeing up control for something else.

Re: [Audyssey] Run feature in games

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,
Well, my experience with mainstream games has gotten me use to the idea
of using a keyboard combo to walk and an arrow key to run. As I
mentioned before in Tomb Raider the shift+arrow commands come in handy
when dodging certain traps, but if it is a large room you will want to
run. Especially, if you have a big ugly enemy after you. Grin
Plus since I run everywhere in MOTA anyway it makes more sense to me to
make that the keyboard default. It requires les work holding down two
keys when all I have to hold is one. Freeing my left hand up for
something else like the fire control.

Charles Rivard wrote:
It makes more sense to me to have a keystroke to move faster than to slow
down. It takes more, not less, energy to move faster. Therefore, it should
take more, rather than less, keystrokes to do the same thing. And for a
beginning gamer, this would also be better, as they would not have to use an
extra keystroke to walk normally, which doesn't make sense, anyway.

Hi Dark,
Well, I'll check it out. Although, I'm mainly starting to put up the

[Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, where can I find a good tutorial for the pygame language that will let
me create something simple to start with?
Will pygame transfer between windows mac platforms or do I need to make two
sets of code for each platform?
Which game types will this support: card games, board games and such?

Also for more complicated games similar to SOD, MOTA, and Q9, will C#.net
work or should I go with C++?
I'm looking to try some sort of shooter adventure game in the future once I
get the hang of game coding.
Will either or both of the C languages work for both Windows and the Mac?
How do I incorporate the Sappy TTS into games or is that sort of built in?
If not, where can I find the code for sappy voices so that the game speaks?

I read that full Python isn't transferable, but so does that mean that
pygame isn't either? So, I'm just guessing here, but then it might be good
to stick with C++ or C#.net instead of any version of python and stay away
from java.

Sorry, this email might be a bit confusing to people. I want to try
something simpole first like a card, matching, board game or simple chase
game. Then, I want to move up to something more complex with enemies and
levels, weapons, and randomness so the game plays different each time you
start it, that part would be similar to MOTA or Entoomed I guess. I want to
find the code and no, I don't mind learning code of most any type as long as
the code has some sort of explanation for what it does or where you might
put each code.

One more thing, can I just start learning code or is there something else I
should start with first?
Any good links for helpful tutorials and things will be appreciated. No, I'm
not looking at java as it seems it isn't very accessible for screen readers
and the full python language is all its own and not part of any of the C
languages, so that might be out, but I don't know if that's true for pygame
as well. So, my options seem to be C++ if its still supported since
Microsoft came out with the C#.net, which is the other option. I also would
like the games to speak for themselves, if possible and that seems to
require some version and code for the Sappy TTS voices.
Thanks to all:
Chastity

Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Philip Bennefall

Chastity,

Being a C++ developer I will perhaps not surprisingly, recommend C++. I have
heard that C# has some major drawbacks, though Thomas could probably tell
you better than myself about that part as he has been using .net but is now
switching to C++. However I can tell you that C++ is definitely a good
language to work with if you want to write advanced games, and it is also
compatible with I should think literally every platform that exists as it
compiles directly to assembly.

As for Sapi speech, you would need to download the Sapi 5.1 SDK from
Microsoft and learn from that, and probably some online tutorials also.
Personally I am not a big fan of it for games, I use sound effects and
prerecorded speech exclusively. Sapi has its advantages such as when reading
unpredictable things, a user list in an online game is a good example, but
for your average game you don't really need it. Do keep in mind that this is
only my personal opinion and a lot of the other developers may or may not
agree with me, but I feel that Sapi ruins a lot of the atmosphere in a game
by sounding the way it does. Speech synthesizers are getting better every
year but they're still nowhere near an actor.

If you wish to start learning C++, I'd recommend visiting www.cplusplus.com.
It is an excellent resource both for tutorials and reference material. Then,
once you get the hang of the basics check out www.gamedeve.net, which offers
a boatload of resources for the novis as well as the pro game developer.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

to find the code and no, I don't mind learning code of most any type as
long as the code has some sort of explanation for what it does or where
you might put each code.

One more thing, can I just start learning code or is there something else
I should start with first?
Any good links for helpful tutorials and things will be appreciated. No,
I'm not looking at java as it seems it isn't very accessible for screen
readers and the full python language is all its own and not part of any of
the C languages, so that might be out, but I don't know if that's true for
pygame as well. So, my options seem to be C++ if its still supported since
Microsoft came out with the C#.net, which is the other option. I also
would like the games to speak for themselves, if possible and that seems
to require some version and code for the Sappy TTS voices.

Thanks to all:
Chastity

Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Nick Helms
good question! I'd like to take some computer science classes,
possibly next summer to learn some programming, but I'm not sure with
language to persoo. I've been told that java is a good starting point,
but I don't believe I've ever used a program created with java that is
usable with jfw.

[Audyssey] new question on Light Tek site

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, does anyone know the owner of Light-tek to let them know something is
wrong with their site or give them the phone number that's up there?
Also, I had added their link to one of my web pages. Should I delete it or
does anyone know if they will be back up and running again?
Also is anyone going to host their games like USA Games since they all ready
offer several free games from PB and Dan Z?
This is odd cause I just checked that link like last week and it was still
working.
Thanks,
Chastity

[Audyssey] re-new game

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, I visited the site and if this is true, the game could be interesting.
I did send these people an email asking some questions since its obvious
they are from a different country and hey, that's fine, but there a lot of
scams out there, so security is important. I have a really good expensive
security program and it usually allerts me if I visit a site that has weird
stuff and I got no message either on visiting the site or saving the site to
a folder on my computer cause sometimes I'll get a warning message when
saving too.
However, if anyone has looked at the game links link at the bottom of their
page, that lists tons of places that seem to have nothing to do with their
company or accessible games at all. There is no company history, no
copyright information, no security information, basically not much on the
page at all.
No, I didn't download anything and the price says for the full version 20,
but what currency? This is all a bit odd, but I guess we'll see what
happens.

[Audyssey] help finding games for deaf/mtion impaired

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, I know this is a gaming list and it focuses on the blind and if this
is out of place, please let me know.
Does anyone know of any games that are accessible for the deaf like with
lots of graphics, colors, and captions? Is there any top 10/20 lists around
or archives of such gaming sites?

Also does anyone know if there are any games accessible by people with
motion impairments like ones where single-switch, head-mouse, eye movements
and such can be found?

I think, as far as I know most text-based games like RPG and games from the
if-archive are accessible by the deaf since those are all text based, but
many motion impaired people need to use single-switch mouse or some sort of
other device so typing isn't that easy.
Thanks for any suggestions.

[Audyssey] light teck treasure mania game

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Hey, if anyone is going to do any work on the light tech game Treasure Mania
instead of just hosting, if you can get permission and in your spare time,
can someone fix that thing so it works better. For one thing you never know
when your near a treasure chest. It needs some sort of sound to identify it.
Can't remember the rest since haven't played it in a while. Yes, I did send
the company several emails about the fixes/bugs, but got no response and
game was never updated.
Just thought I'd put this out there.

there is a special group address that you can add for msn to communicate and

[Audyssey] SUDERMARIO SURROUND MEMORY

2009-12-15 Thread dark

  Hi.

I googled this one and it was absolutely fine, it's just that the
developer- Original Message - doesn't speak english as his/her
native language, which is fair enough (a lot of people don't). A quick
google search found a legitimate webpage for the game, with a download and
paypal link.

While I haven't tried downloading it yet, it seems regular enough as far as
it goes. I dimly remember someone called mario looking at making a virtual
surround sound game at one point on audiogames.net, --- -though whether this
is the same person I'm not sure.

The address for anyone interested is http://www.sudermario.co.cc/

Ps: sinse I have full avg, i might as well make use of it.

Beware the grue!

usually people post to audiogames, this may be lagit.
but who is game enough to check it.
I'm not such a person.
if someone has a system to get hacked or something can they varify this is
a lagit thing?
The email was not in good english but then emails from the author of
night of parasite are not fully in good english either so then again no

The youtube is lagit but it probably could be replicated.
on that note maybe I may have some answer for the list.

[Audyssey] To Philip on C++

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
First, thanks for the links. I'm just wondering on the memory thing. I think
I read somewhere that the programmer has to handle all the memory or
something and code for that? Sorry, if I got that wrong. Also can I create a
simple game with this first before trying more advanced things, just to get
the hang of the code?
As for Sappy, it does work in some games and I like that feature for some
simple games, but I would like to use sound effects and stuff for more
advanced games, though I've checked on prices for music and sounds and its
really expensive on a fixed income.
Thanks again and I'll definitely check out those links.

Re: [Audyssey] SUDERMARIO SURROUND MEMORY

2009-12-15 Thread Karl Belanger
I have tried the game, it is real and not infected. It is a simple memory game,
similar to the Pirate Memory game that was around for Klango in the past,
except there is no story mode. Players simply take turns selecting spots on a
board and trying to match them. The audio quality is quite low and the keyboard
seems sluggish. Also, nothing ever gets interrupted except the sound which lets
you know where you are on the grid.

   Hi.

I googled this one and it was absolutely fine, it's just that the

While I haven't tried downloading it yet, it seems regular enough as far as

If they get back to you, please let us know.

I personally wonder if that is merely their english page which they've had
to pay for domain hosting on by including many links to other things,
and they've got a more complete site in their native language, --- -does
anyone know wht .cc means in a site address?

We'll see though.

Perhaps a good enough legitimacy test might be to look at their paypal link.
It's possible to tell paypal scams fairly easily (I reported one to them a
few weeks ago), by what information the site asks for, sinse paypal
themselves will only ask for E-mail address and pasword, and if some
sort of verification is needed such as your creddit card number they'll give
you the last four digits streight off so you can check.

If the paypal link is legit, you can assume the site and company
is, --- if not, it might be something dodgy.

Okay, I visited the site and if this is true, the game could be
interesting. I did send these people an email asking some questions since
its obvious they are from a different country and hey, that's fine, but
there a lot of scams out there, so security is important. I have a really
good expensive security program and it usually allerts me if I visit a
site that has weird stuff and I got no message either on visiting the site
or saving the site to a folder on my computer cause sometimes I'll get a
warning message when saving too.
However, if anyone has looked at the game links link at the bottom of
their page, that lists tons of places that seem to have nothing to do with
their company or accessible games at all. There is no company history, no
copyright information, no security information, basically not much on the
page at all.
No, I didn't download anything and the price says for the full version 20,
but what currency? This is all a bit odd, but I guess we'll see what
happens.

Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chastity,
Wow! A lot of questions to answer here. I'll do my best to answer them
so bare with me as I try to explain things as best as I can.
As far as PyGame goes it is a cross-platform Python wrapper for the SDL
API that works on Mac OS, Linux, and Windows. While I like the
simplicity of PyGame and SDL it still leaves a lot to be desired. SDL
only has very generic input device support for keyboards, joysticks, and
mice so if you have a specific type of controller with advanced features
like force feedback support you are out of luck. SDL_Mixer also has its
drawbacks. A lot of features I use in DirectX such as changing the
frequency/pitch of the sounds in real time isn't currently available
with SDL. SDL_Mixer has a software mixer for doing virtual 3d audio, but
it is not as realistic or as good as the hardware mixing you get with an
API like OpenAL. As a result PyGame and SDL based games lack features
that you could get with better game libraries such as DirectX, OpenAL,
FMOD, etc. Which Python doesn't support to my knowledge. So I wouldn't
really recommend Python if you wanted to create the next Shades of Doom
or Mysteries of the Ancients.
When it comes to C# .NET it certainly could be used to create a game
like Q9, Mysteries of the Ancients, or Shades of Doom. In fact,
Mysteries of the Ancients is currently written in C# .NET. However, it
is unfortunately first and foremost a Windows based programming
language. Although there is a cross-platform framework called Mono and
cross-platform game API called SdlDotNet it is less than a perfect
gaming solution. For one thing I've heard that Microsoft is trying to
take the Mono project's developers to court over various copyright
issues, and who knows how long C# .NET will continue to be supported on
Mac OS and Linux. So legal issues would not make C# .NET a great
solution right now for cross-platform development in my personal opinion.
Even for strict Windows development I've had my fare share of problems
with the language. First, Microsoft released a DirectX API for C# .NET,
called Managed DirectX, which has a number of bugs and is no longer
officially supported by Microsoft. Second, in 2007 Microsoft released an
alternative to Managed DirectX called the XNA Framework which has some
screen reader accessibility issues. The main accessibility problem is
the tool they use for building soundbanks, setting up sound properties,
etc isn't accessible for a totally blind user. Third, SdlDotNet has the
same general limitations as PyGame. Last, there is the SlimDX API which
is pretty good, but their documentation isn't as good as it could be.
They often have you look things up in the official Microsoft
documentation for C++ which means you need to understand C++ on some
level to be able to red and fully understand the docs. There is another
sound API, FMODEX, which is really good, but if you use it for
commercial games it is quite expensive to license. Bottom line, C# might
be a good language to know and use, but it doesn't have a lot of great
choices for game programming libraries.
There are a few other things about C# .NET you might want to be aware of
before you consider using C# .NET for game programming. When you compile
a C# .NET or VB .NET application using Visual Studio .NET it converts
your source code to something called MSIL, the Microsoft Intermediate
Language, which gets read and run by the .NET runtime. As a result your
application can easily be hacked and cracked and reverse engineered by a
skilled .NET developer. So if you ever decide to create commercial
programs you will have to purchase an obfuscation tool to scramble the
MSIL code so that only the framework can read it, but if someone tries
to reverse engineer the game they get nothing but jumbled garbage in
their favorite disassembler. From a commercial developer's perspective
.NET based languages are something of a security risk.
Personally, I have come to believe the one and only true option for game
development is good old C++. Besides myself I know of several accessible
game developers who also are now turning to C++. I know that Draconis
Entertainment is developing a new game engine in C++ that runs on Mac
and Windows, Philip's Q9 game was written in C++, and a couple of other
game developers are now looking at C++ for their future games. I think
several of our audio game developers have tried other things like visual
Basic 6, C# .NET, Python, etc and found them lacking. The C++ language
is beginning to take a foothold as the game language of choice for
accessible game developers, and there are a number of reasons why.
First, there are plenty of free C++ compilers and tools out there such
as Visual C++ Express, MinGW, Cygwin, etc for example. As a result you
don't really have a lot of start up costs. If you want to buy books and
license certain libraries that is fine, but as a rule you can get decent
tools and libraries for

Okay, I know this is a gaming list and it focuses on the blind and if this
is out of place, please let me know.
Does anyone know of any games that are accessible for the deaf like with
lots of graphics, colors, and captions? Is there any top 10/20 lists
around or archives of such gaming sites?

Also does anyone know if there are any games accessible by people with
motion impairments like ones where single-switch, head-mouse, eye
movements and such can be found?

I think, as far as I know most text-based games like RPG and games from
the if-archive are accessible by the deaf since those are all text based,
but many motion impaired people need to use single-switch mouse or some
sort of other device so typing isn't that easy.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have tried the game, it is real and not infected. It is a simple memory
game, similar to the Pirate Memory game that was around for Klango in the
past, except there is no story mode. Players simply take turns selecting
spots on a board and trying to match them. The audio quality is quite low
and the keyboard seems sluggish. Also, nothing ever gets interrupted except
the sound which lets you know where you are on the grid.

  Hi.

I googled this one and it was absolutely fine, it's just that the

quick

google search found a legitimate webpage for the game, with a download and

While I haven't tried downloading it yet, it seems regular enough as far

it goes. I dimly remember someone called mario looking at making a virtual

The address for anyone interested is http://www.sudermario.co.cc/

Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Damien C. Sadler

Hi Thomas,
Yes, that does look complicated, but then again for the past week I have
been struggling with various parts of a C tutorial that was written by a
friend of mine. Where in Visual Basic you have strings, booleans, longs,
integers, types and classes, in C you have chars, ints, shorts, longs,
doubles, floats, pointers, structures and even completely new user defined
data types which seem to look more complicated the more I try to understand
it. Philip Bennefall has been fantastic and has helped me with various parts
of it, but at the moment my brain feels like it has fallen into the fire and
turned into a shrivelled burned up piece of paper *smile*. I seriously wish
I had been taught this language right from the start when I was introduced
to so-called programming 10 years ago.

Damien.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

Hi Chastity,
Wow! A lot of questions to answer here. I'll do my best to answer them so
bare with me as I try to explain things as best as I can.
As far as PyGame goes it is a cross-platform Python wrapper for the SDL
API that works on Mac OS, Linux, and Windows. While I like the simplicity
of PyGame and SDL it still leaves a lot to be desired. SDL only has very
generic input device support for keyboards, joysticks, and mice so if you
have a specific type of controller with advanced features like force
feedback support you are out of luck. SDL_Mixer also has its drawbacks. A
lot of features I use in DirectX such as changing the frequency/pitch of
the sounds in real time isn't currently available with SDL. SDL_Mixer has
a software mixer for doing virtual 3d audio, but it is not as realistic or
as good as the hardware mixing you get with an API like OpenAL. As a
result PyGame and SDL based games lack features that you could get with
better game libraries such as DirectX, OpenAL, FMOD, etc. Which Python
doesn't support to my knowledge. So I wouldn't really recommend Python if
you wanted to create the next Shades of Doom or Mysteries of the Ancients.
When it comes to C# .NET it certainly could be used to create a game like
Q9, Mysteries of the Ancients, or Shades of Doom. In fact, Mysteries of
the Ancients is currently written in C# .NET. However, it is unfortunately
first and foremost a Windows based programming language. Although there is
a cross-platform framework called Mono and cross-platform game API called
SdlDotNet it is less than a perfect gaming solution. For one thing I've
heard that Microsoft is trying to take the Mono project's developers to
court over various copyright issues, and who knows how long C# .NET will
continue to be supported on Mac OS and Linux. So legal issues would not
make C# .NET a great solution right now for cross-platform development in
my personal opinion.
The main accessibility problem is the
tool they use for building soundbanks, setting up sound properties, etc
isn't accessible for a totally blind user. Third, SdlDotNet has the same
general limitations as PyGame. Last, there is the SlimDX API which is
pretty good, but their documentation isn't as good as it could be. They
often have you look things up in the official Microsoft documentation for
C++ which means you need to understand C++ on some level to be able to red
and fully understand the docs. There is another sound API, FMODEX, which
is really good, but if you use it for commercial games it is quite
expensive to license. Bottom line, C# might be a good language to know and
use, but it doesn't have a lot of great choices for game programming
libraries.
There are a few other things about C# .NET you might want to be aware of
before you consider using C# .NET for game programming. When you compile a
C# .NET or VB .NET application using Visual Studio .NET it converts your
source code to something called MSIL, the Microsoft Intermediate Language,
which gets read and run by the .NET runtime. As a result your application
can easily be hacked and cracked and reverse engineered by a skilled .NET
developer. So if you ever decide to create commercial programs you will
have to purchase an obfuscation tool to scramble the MSIL code so that
only the framework can read it, but if someone tries to reverse engineer
the game they get nothing but jumbled garbage in their favorite
disassembler. From a commercial developer's perspective .NET based
languages are something

Re: [Audyssey] To Philip on C++

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chastity,
Well, the primary difference with the .NET languages and a language like
C++ in terms of memory management is that the .NET Framework has what we
call a garbage collector. The garbage collector periodically destroyes
unused objects etc to free up memory so it lets newer or lazy
programmers get away with being a bit sloppy in terms of cleaning up
after him or herself when programming. In C++ since it compiles directly
to a native binary you don't have that safety net of a built in garbage
collector to clean up after you. if you create a pointer or new object
on the heap it is up to you to safely release it freeing up memory on
your own. It isn't hard to do, but you have to take that extra step of
releasing pointers and objects when they are no longer needed else you
will have some major memory leaks.
As far as writing games in C++. That's no problem. Back in college when
I was taking C++ I wrote all kinds of simple text based games like
Blackjack, Hangman, Guess the Number, whatever for practice. So you can
do that sort of thing for practice before you get into more complicated
games.

Re: [Audyssey] another game programming question

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Damien,
Yeah, I know. C++ has several different data types including chars,
strings, shorts, booleans, longs, double, floats, pointers, integers,
plus several ones Microsoft created for handles, dword flags, results,
etc. When coming from Visual Basic 6 or one of the .NET languages it can
become quite intimidating and overwhelming. However, the reason C++ has
so many different data types is a throwback to the days when programmers
really had to worry about how many bytes they were storing in memory at
any given point in time. If I remember shorts are 2 bytes, longs are 4
bytes, doubles are 8 bytes, etc. An unsigned integer can store any
number from -32,768 to 32,767. A signed integer is something like 1 to
65,534. Anyway, C++ gives you the power really to manage the amount of
data you are storing in memory and use the data type best suited for the
data being stored. Anyone coming from .NET or a language like Visual
Basic take one look at this and freak as they are holy unprepared for
the scope of data types and degree of memory management available to
them. We haven't even began to talk about pointers which Visual Basic 6
and the .NET languages don't even have. It's different and definitely
more advanced programming.

[Audyssey] Sorry, Thomas, another question, please?

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, I see the point and it looks like C++ is going to be my best option.
Yes, that code you sent did look a bit complicated, but then I haven't
studied the code as yet. My questions are below and sorry about all this,
but this is all new to me.

1. Can I use the straight C++ and add Sappy later after the main program is
written or should it be included as I write the program?
2. Where do I find this VC++ express that has the Sappy with it and about
how much is that going to run me for cost?
3. In terms of direct X is that included in the ++ languages or where do I
find the code for it or do I just download some sort of link thing to tell
the program it needs this?
4. What, exactly is the first thing I should do? Find a link and tutorial to
study a ++ language?
5. In terms of cost and libraries, exactly what does this mean? I thought I
could just study the code and write everything by hand as I do with
websites? Or, do I need to pay for a ++ license and direct X license and
Sappy license to get this all going?

What do I write the code in? I mean like for websites I write in MS-notepad
and save as html. When I start writing code, do I use notepad again or do I
download something special so I can save it as C++ extension or something.?

I really appreciate all the help and I'm sorry I've so many questions, but I
want to try to get things in the right order the first time so I don't have
to redo stuff, which takes more time.

Re: [Audyssey] Sorry, Thomas, another question, please?

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chastity,
Ok, I've responded to your e-mail using a question and answer format so
you and others can get a better handle on things.

Question:
1. Can I use the straight C++ and add Sappy later after the main program is
written or should it be included as I write the program?

Answer:
Depends on how large the project is. For a new programmer like yourself
I'd recommend just focus on learning the language rather than trying to
learn an API like Sapi. For simple programs you can just print your text
directly to the screen using a function like printf or cout which is
accessible to any screen reader that has console support. Most of my
early programs just printed text to the screen in this way. Later once
you know the language better you can go back and add Sapi support to
them for practice.

Question:
2. Where do I find this VC++ express that has the Sappy with it and about
how much is that going to run me for cost?

Answer:
The answer is Visual C++ Express is totally free. It is a shareware
program created by Microsoft and you can download it from me at

http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/vs-express/VC-Express-2008.zip
then unzip it and install it.

Question:
3. In terms of direct X is that included in the C++ languages or where do I
find the code for it or do I just download some sort of link thing to tell
the program it needs this?

Answer:
Well, DirectX is a technology that is built into Windows. In order to
program a game or anything else that uses DirectX you need to download
the DirectX SDK, set Visual C++ up to use it, and you need to read the
documentation that comes with it to learn how to program using DirectX.
DirectX is a very advanced piece of technology, and it isn't something
you can learn over night. You can get the DirectX SDK for developers
from them at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/directx/default.aspx
and install it.
I'll add here that Philip has a library he sells fairly cheaply called
Streamway that uses DirectX, but is easier to use than DirectX from what
he has told me. Plus you get some extras like the ability to use ogg
support, sound encryption, etc. Just thought you'd like to know.

Question:
4. What, exactly is the first thing I should do? Find a link and tutorial to
study a C++ language?

Answer:
Yes, you need to learn the C++ language before you do anything else. You
can't even begin to program using Sapi, DirectX, whatever unless you
first know how to program using C++. It's like going to a foreign
country and trying to talk to someone who can't speak English. In a case
like that it makes sense to learn the foreign language before traveling
to that country and trying to speak with someone who can't speak
English. If that makes sense.

Question:
5. In terms of cost and libraries, exactly what does this mean? I thought I
could just study the code and write everything by hand as I do with
websites? Or, do I need to pay for a C++ license and direct X license and
Sappy license to get this all going?

Answer:
No. Most libraries such as DirectX, Sapi, etc are totally free. There
are a few such as FMOD that cost a licencing fee if you use them
commercially, but things like DirectX, Sapi, are totally free. There is
no license for C++, because it is a free standard language shared by all
operating systems and developers. No one company owns the rights to C++.

Question:
6. What do I write the code in? I mean like for websites I write in
MS-notepad

and save as html. When I start writing code, do I use notepad again or do I
download something special so I can save it as C++ extension or something.?

Answer:
If you use a development tool like Visual C++ it has a built in editor
for writing programs and you can save the files as *.c, *.cpp, *.h, etc
type files. However, if you want to you can code C++ programs in
notepad, but you still have to compile them using a compiler like Visual
C++, MinGW, whatever. You'll have to decide if you can work with the
Visual C++ editor, or would rather just edit your code in notepad,
textpad, or something else.

Re: [Audyssey] To Philip on C++

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Damien,
I guess some times it is kind of a hard concept to get across once you
have been so use to the way Visual Basic does things. However, some
things are pretty obvious if you think about it. Like if you wanted to
know if you needed to use a short or long integer.
Take a game like Troopenum. In the game after 5 ships lands game over.
Well, you don't need a lot of memory to store the numbers 0 through 5 so
a short integer would be practical here, and you only use something like
2 byts to keep that variable in memory. Now, if you want to keep track
of scoring that can be in the hundred thousands you obviously need more
memory to store that big a number so a long integer would be used.
Instead of 2 byts you now have reserved 4 byts for that variable. That
much makes sense to you i'm sure.
Pointers are exactly what the name implies. it points to some specific
data already in memory. Kind of like a reference card that tells you on
what stack, shelf, and isle a book can be located in the public library.
Instead of books pointers keep track of certain data on file in your
computer's memory, and can reference it for you when you call that
pointer. As I recall unlike variables pointers don't actually use memory
themselves but references some data already in memory rather than
creating a block of memory and storing it there.

Re: [Audyssey] To Philip on C++

2009-12-15 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Thomas,

Pointers do use a little bit of memory, the word size of the particular
platform to be more precise. So a pointer on a 32 bit platform takes up 32
bits of memory (e.g. 4 bytes), in order to store the memory address of the
location which is being pointed to.

Re: [Audyssey] To Philip on C++

2009-12-15 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Thomas,

Quite so. Not only is memory availability skyrocketing, but programming is
becoming more and more abstract so that one soon won't have to worry about
these things very much at all. Still, though I have not taken any
programming classes myself but have learnt purely from experience I enjoy
picking up some of the theory as well as the practical aspects as I find
that having knowledge on both fronts has been useful to me more than once.

And while we're on the subject of memory management, do you yourself make
use of garbage collection? I am considering adding it to my engine but have
not yet made up my mind, as everything is allocated and freed manually at
this point and it has worked rather well so far.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

For entombed targiting, you hold the number and press enter to attack.

So whe it is your character's turn in combat:

1: choose the attack, the basic fight option or some magic.

2: arrow to the enemy you want to targit.

3: hold down the key corresponding to the body part your aiming at.

4: With the key stil held down, push enter to execute the attack.

As noted before, flurry is not targitable, also remember that just

I'm still baffled as to how to make the targeting thing work. After
hitting either Fight or Flurry, I get the list of monsters if there's
more than one. At this point, I have tried both hitting a number on the
number key alone and hitting it while holding down the shift key.
Neither has led to a targeted body part; I get the same random hits I
was getting before. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can you
help a brother out?

Subject: [Audyssey] Thanks for the Lighttech Games

Hi,
I just wanted to publicly thank Dark, Hayden, and Shaun for uploading
the Lighttech games. I now believe I have all of their games and will
be putting them up on my web site some time this week. Time permitting
of course.

Thanks.
