All I can say is in terms of the Windows versions both Audacity and Goldwave have their strengths and weaknesses and that is why I tend to use both for a sound project. It really all comes down to what you want your sound editor to do. Audacity's strengths are it is free, is cross-platform, supports a lot of different audio formats, has fairly easy to learn and use editing commands, and supports a number of basic effects like echo, phaser, wahwwah, low pass and high pass filters, etc. It will allow you to change pitch, speed, allow you to change volume, etc. In short, it is a pretty basic audio editor for far less than Goldwave, Soundforge, and so on. Its disadvantages are that it doesn't have as many special effects and lacks some other features you might get with a commercial editor. Goldwave has many of the same features listed for Audacity with the addition of more special effects to choose from, such as flanger and mechanize which Audacity doesn't have. Goldwave has a CD reader for ripping audio CDs to mp3, ogg, wav, etc. Since a lot of blind people are more familiar with Goldwave and its commands its easier to get help on what hot keys do what, or just advice in general from the community just because more people are familiar with it. Bottom line, I think Goldwave is the better product over all, but Audacity is certainly a good second if you don't want to pay the $55 or so for Goldwave. As for myself I am beginning to use Audacity more and more mainly for personal convenience. I am a Linux user for the most part, and since there is not a version of Goldwave for Linux and there is one for Audacity naturally I simply do the editing in Audacity rather then getting on a Windows system to do a quick edit here and there. So its not really a case of liking one over the other, but more of using whatever is available and serves my purpose at the time. Cheers! On 8/24/13, Jesse Gaona wrote: Thanks Thomas. Hey Cara, Just checking I'm following you with this, because I wasn't aware that Boot Camp would run on anything other than the internal drive. Are you saying that so long as the copy of OS X that you run the Boot Camp creation wizard thingy from is running on an external, Boot Camp itself will work on that same drive? I'm guessing it's not possible to have Mac OS on the internal, and just the Boot Camp partition on an external drive without having two copies of Mac OS, if you see what I mean? Absolutely! :) You can install your Mac OS on that and then you'll have as much space as you need. From there you can choose to use a VM or partition. to boot from the external you simply hold down Option at startup and select the drive as you normally would with any other bootable disc. It might actually even be cheaper to get a standard laptop drive and inclosure separately and install the drive yourself. This can be very easy to do. If you have not done this before than you probably want sighted help the first time, but once you learn it it's really easy to do on your own. Hope this helps and have a great weekend! Re: [Audyssey] star trek final conflict: has anybody ever won this?
Ok, that helps a lot. I had no clue that it was possible to check for cloaked ships at all, I guess that's why defiant keeps getting hit by pairs of them. Is there any way you could email me the patch for the game, I really don't rellish the idea of searching through years of archived messages for it, and crashing whenever I check sector location or try to do the borg mission is frustrating. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward Subject: Re: [Audyssey] star trek final conflict: has anybody ever won this? Hi John, If you are getting attacked like that it sounds to me like you aren't using your sensors to their full effect. Long range sensors will help you keep track of where any and all non-cloaked vessels are allowing you to anticipate how close they are, when an attack is coming, and you can adjust your ships' positions accordingly. Short range sensors have the advantage of detecting cloaked vessels in your immediate area. It will show up as a subspace anomaly of some kind and you can pretty much figure out there is a Klingon or Romulan ship about to decloak and attack you so you can use that info to your advantage. If you aren't scanning each and every turn for each and every ship no wonder you are getting jumped. As for how sectors work in STFC they are squares of about 100 by 100 units with the letters A through J giving you your horizontal position, and the numbers 1 through 10 giving you your vertical position. So if you were in sector E-5 you would be in the center of the starmap, or at least in the center sector. I think what has you confused is in Trek 2000 it has a very simple grid of 100 by 100 units. Each sector represents one single unit on the map where in STFC a sector location is more like real space travel with a sector covering 10 parsects of space rather than a single unit. So at warp 9.7, maximum speed, it would take you about ten moves to travel one sector or 10 parsects in the game universe. Does that make sense? Re: [Audyssey] star trek final conflict: has anybody ever won this?
I guess the issue that I have is that 2/3 of the ships are cloaked, and they tend to annihilate whatever they go after in the first turn or two. This is especially true when they gang up on me. It also seems like all the ships (including the cardacions) criple my ships almost immediately (I just started a game, and in the first turn cardicia2 knocked out deep space 9's power). My current overall strategy is to send my uncloaked ships to the starbases, and have them act as protection while defiant goes in and knocks out enemy starbases. It seems to work pretty well, but I keep forgetting that checking sector location in non-federation space crashes the game, so I end up losing eventually. I'm also having some difficulty figuring out the map, because coordinates aren't displayed as easily as in something like trek2000. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Programming in Batch.
Hi Paul, Yes, Aprone's little tutorial was well written. I have been thinking of writing something similar only with a slightly more cross-platform point of view using Python. Using VBScript was a simple starting place, which was good, but Aprone was thinking like a Windows user and didn't give Mac or Linux users a leg up. My thinking is I could take his basic idea, turn it into a Python/game programming tutorial, and write the sample games so that they would run on any platform. When we get into components like Pygame for input, audio, networking, etc again it would apply to a Mac user, Linux user, or a Windows user which would help everyone equally. :D Cheers! Double that for something really good, but $1,000 is way too high for a standard laptop. Re: [Audyssey] adventure at c:
Hi Kenny, That puzzle leaves a little bit to be desired because of the stereo panning caused by the same sound being played at various points. The solution, I found, is to jump, hit the arrow a specific number of times, and hope you land. If you do, great. Remember that number. If you don't, try again with a different number. For example: At the first platform, jump, then tap the right arrow 4 times. If you fall, it probably wasn't far enough. When you get back to the first platform, jump, then tap the right arrow five times. If you landed, the answer is five. If you fall, try again with six. Keep doing this until you have memorized the number of key presses for each jump. I want to say most of the jumps were 5 key presses, but it's been a while, so I don't remember for sure. Re: [Audyssey] Programming in Batch.
Hi Thomas and cara, I like the idea of helping people that are trying to get into programing for the first time, hopefully this encourages more people to try and helps people that may be struggling to understand. Hopefully the end result gives us more people making audio games which helps the community . Like Thomas said I know different people learn better in different situations. Personally I work well with reading the theory with examples that I can try to write out myself to practise. One of the first articles I read on programming was something Aprone wrote called learning how to code for the absolute beginner, it only ran through some very basics of how to program using VBS, but it was great since I only needed notepad in word and I could follow what he was talking about and using his examples write my first little bit of programming and then used the knowledge learnt to expand that program. Although it was only a very basic program I thought it was a great article, well written and easy to follow for someone with absolutely no programming knowledge. The link to it is below http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=7297 I like the idea of the wicki that you talked about I think it would be a great central point for new developers to visit to see tutorials etc I know there have been a lot of emails recently regarding programming advise requested from john, and although some of the concepts have been a little over my head they have been interesting and I can begin to see the logic/thought process of some of the ideas and been storing the emails away in a file for later use when I will find it helpful so having a wicki where this kind of information is would be invaluable to people just learning to program and wanting a little assistance. Re: [Audyssey] windows laptops
Hi Shaun, Sheesh, you got seriously ripped. You don't have to pay $1,000 for a laptop unless it is top of the line. Here in the United states an inexpensive laptop costs between $300 and $500 for something on the really cheap side but decent. Double that for something really good, but $1,000 is way too high for a standard laptop. The only thing I can figure out that can account for such a price is exchange rates and extra import/export costs that double the price beyond what it would be for someone else in the United States. Re: [Audyssey] windows laptops
Hi Will, Well, this is something that is always changing, but the last time I was at Walmart, for example, I saw an inexpensive HP for about $325 with Windows 8, a 2 GHZ duel core 64-bit processor, 4 GB of ram, and a load of trial and demo software. Something like that would be fine for playing games although Windows 8 and a 64-bit processor isn't too good for a lot of our older games. However, you can find a decent machine for under $400 depending on where you look. Also there are always refurbished laptops for sale on Ebay with Windows XP, Vista, Windows7, etc available which is also a possibility too, and buying an older model that has been refurbished generally costs less than a brand new system. Just look around and you'll find something in your personal price range that can serve as a dedicated gaming machine. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] windows laptops
well it depends what you want I got my toshiba c850 for about 1000. Its going to be hard to get xp units however, ebay may help, also x leased systems some are sold in computer shops are systems with expired leases in usually from businesses. These systems are all reformatted and may be refurbished. However expect the first come first served approach if you go there. and don't expect the best quality that doesn't mean that you will get a high speced core2. just if you see it, get it because stock may be limited depending on the type letf. If you have winxp or a nold windows software, then you may be able to get a recycled system. Or you can build one or something. you are looking for a system with no more than 4gb ram, hard drive size does not matter but make sure you have at least 500gb else you may have issue loading everything. if you have windows then whatever it works. you could also use an external drive though on vmware externals run really slowly via the vm and I have not decided what to do. I think I may end up setting a share folder for all my vms that will have everything I need in it. I still have a high speed core2 laptop and have an old slightly smoking desktop which once retired will suit me ok. I also have a barely used singlecore but not sure really. My plan eventually is to have some sort of server I can make emulate sertain environments and cpu types. have vms for sertain users, xp, 7 8 linux maybe dos though probably don't need it. now if only I can run tads and hugo via sapi that would rock. my inform 6 and 7 games will run without any issue. Re: [Audyssey] shadow rine
I suppose that someday I ought to learn how to do that then in case I ever get a Mac, which is becoming a more and more appealing option as time goes by. That way I could still have all my games and things on one machine. We are the Knights who say...Ni! -Original Message- From: Thomas Ward Sent: Friday, August 23, 2013 10:30 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] shadow rine Hi Charles, Well, I wouldn't go to say that Mac users are limited in software choices, in the general sense, because there is quite a lot of software for all purpose day to day tasks such as office suites, sound editors, web browsers, etc. The real issue is accessibility, and accessible software. The Apple screen reader, VoiceOver, will only work with applications built to a particular specification and if an email client, web browser, or office program wasn't written with VoiceOver accessibility in mind forget it. That could be one reason it seems like Mac users have less options or choices than a Windows user. However, when it comes to accessible games the real problem right now is many blind audio game developers simply are not creating Mac games. They often use languages, tools, and APIs not found on the Mac. For instance, many of the games written were written in Visual Basic 6 using DirectX 8. Neither technology is found on Mac OS X and consequently there is no way to make them run on a Mac without being rewritten from scratch or being run in a Windows XP virtual machine. Since it is rather unreasonable to ask a developer like Jim Kitchen to rewrite all of his games from scratch for a platform he doesn't even have or use the best option is a Windows virtual machine for all involved. Will's problem is he doesn't want to run a Windows virtual machine or install Windows into a separate partition using Boot Camp. Well, that's going to be his problem, because I highly doubt many developers will ever port their games from Windows to Mac. Its one of the prices one has to accept when choosing to use a different platform and OS. Not everyone is going to be using what you are using, and you make do with what you have even if that means virtualizing Windows for the handful of apps and games not available on your OS of choice. So by refusing to do this Will is blowing his own foot off proverbially speaking. For example, I use Linux for most of my day to day computer use. I think everyone or almost everyone on the list knows that. All the same I don't email GMA and ask them to rewrite Tank Commander, Lone Wolf, Time of Conflict, etc just so I can have a Linux version. I'd be elated if they did, but I know that it would be a long difficult task without a lot of financial investment for David Greenwood so don't bother making an issue of it. That is why I keep a Windows computer on hand for running a few things like the GMA Games that won't run on Linux. It is all a part of my choice not to use Windows full time. Mac users will have to face the same realities I have. However, if I refused to use a Windows virtual machine or keep a Windows computer on hand I'd only be shooting myself in the foot and I know it. I know that Windows software can now be run on a Mac, although I don't exactly know how, because I am a Windows user unless I am using my iPhone. Maybe your choice to not have anything to do with Windows on your machine is shooting yourself in the proverbial foot? -- If guns kill people, writing implements cause grammatical and spelling errors! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
