Re: [Audyssey] game taste was: Re: regarding temporal disturbance

2014-05-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Perhaps, but sometimes talking to other developers isn't always
necessary per se. Besides tutorials there is always the possibility of
looking at sample code such as the various open source retro remakes
for ideas on how to get around a certain problem.

To give you an example there is a free and open source game called
Super Tux which is in the style of Mario Brothers etc. Since it is
open source anyone can download the C code and look through it to see
how the basic mechanics work and then incorporate those concepts into
your own design. Seeing an actually working set of game mechanics is
in my opinion worth more than getting concept and theory when working
code is right there for the taking.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] a personal request/challenge

2014-05-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jeremy,

Well, Risk is definitely one of the games I'd like to do eventually.
There are, however, a couple of problems with me doing so which I'll
mention below.

The first is time. These days I am so busy I can't even complete the
projects I have been paid to do such as Raceway and MOTA so I couldn't
justify taking a new project like this at this time. Although, as
someone who enjoyed playing Risk in the past it is something I too
would love to see in an accessible audio game format.

Second, is I would need a copy of the manual and mission cards. I had
such a Risk game around here somewhere, but have no idea where the
board game is. I believe my ex wife took it along with a bunch of
other stuff when she moved out six months ago so I would probably have
to buy a new copy and have someone sighted read off everything for me
to accurately reproduce the game. If you have such a manual in text as
well as the cards I would appreciate it if you could send me a copy of
them.

The final issue is there are now many different variations of Risk
which may need to be considered. As you may or may not know Hasbro has
released a number of TV and movie based spin-offs such as Transformers
Risk, Star Wars Risk, etc which would be interesting to develop in
tandem with the classic Risk game.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] analog movement and keyboard movements

2014-05-28 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I do see what you mean about introducing concepts from realistic physics in
terms of movement speed etc, however once again I can think of lots of
instances where similar mechanics to what you mention have been added to
classic games calculated as game hazards.

For example, in Ice man's stage of Mega man, most of the ledges you walk on
are naturally icy. This means that if you are walking forward you will move
slightly more quickly, and when you want to stop you can't just let go of
the button because Mega man will continue to slide along, you need to
actually decrease your speed by tapping the other direction slightly. This
can be a real pest when jumping over multiple pits sinse not only does Mega
man slide when you land and move more quickly, but frequently I've found
myself wrongly estimating when mega man reaches the edge so he plummets to
his doom :D.

There is absolutely no reason why even in a 1D audio game you couldn't
replicate something like this. Of course with yourself not having been able
to study these sorts of things for years and many people never having had
full access to all the information about games, it is understandable why
this sort of thing got missed, which is again why I'm trying to explain
these sorts of things in detail, sinse obviously I do still play mainstream
games, at least the classic ones, and even if I don't get full access to all
the information in the game visually I do at least get enough for them to be
very playable.

As regards weather true mainstream mechanics have been seen in audio games,
well some at least of the fp games like Swamp are contenders, even if not
for mainstream fps now (sinse fps's have got ridiculously complex), maybe
for ones a few years ago back in the days of Quake and original doom.

I would also site somethinelse games such as papasangre as possessing at
least similar mechanics to many arcade games. For example there are
frequently surfaces that alter the character's movement, as well as surfices
which will alert the enemy to your position.

Re: [Audyssey] temporal disturbance.

2014-05-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ishan,

Well, in science fiction terms a temporal disturbance is a temporary
rip in the time space continuum which may cause someone to go forward
in time or back in tine or even slip into another alternative
dimension. It really depends on the specific science fiction series
under discussion, and the author's or developer's personal
interpretation of the temporal disturbance phenomenon.

In Shades of Doom, which is what you are thinking of here, the
temporal disturbance is merely a disturbance in time and space that
moves you to a different area of the level.

Re: [Audyssey] super liam water works level

2014-05-28 Thread dark
Make sure your as close to the fan as possible before jumping, literally one
step away from getting killed.

Walk up to a fan and see how close you can go and that will give you the
distance needed. Make sure you learn this because the wter escape level at
the end of water works requires you to jump fans very quickly.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] game taste was: Re: regarding temporal disturbance

2014-05-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Sure. Too bad Super Tux isn't accessible as I think you and a lot of
others would really enjoy it.

The basic concept of the game is you play Tux, the Linux penguin, as
he travels through his icy world doing a lot of things Mario does such
as breaking blocks of ice, jumping over patches of ice, and can
shrink, grow bigger, or throw fireballs, etc. Obviously, not being
accessible I haven't played it myself, but my son loves the game and
plays it all the time. I have thought many times of trying to see what
would need to be done to add some sort of access to that game.

Cheers!

Hi,

It should probably be pointed out that there are newer versions of
Visual Basic such as Visual Basic 2010 which are accessible and are
still supported by Microsoft, and are better suited for todays newer
processors and Windows development requirements than was Visual Basic
6 which was developed for Windows 95/98 era computers.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] tenpin alley and Mississippi - Re: social event versusmechanics

2014-05-28 Thread Shaun Everiss

I agree dark.
I don't seem to have the time I had 10 years ago or even 5 years ago.
Back when I started the net was just starting.
I spent my days hacking, playing, seeing what mischief I could get to
do and just wasting time.

Now I don't have that time.
Today a sunday has been the first day in ages where I have been able
to sleep most of the morning, but I have had to devote most of today
to work I didn't do earlier in the week the email being the last
thing for today.

Life as it has done to many a person has got in the way.
As well as excercises and other such things, health and family work
have been taking centre stage.
One of the big projects I have to do is upgrade people's systems
along with this and other business due to major house upgrades I will
have to sacrofice online everything for some time.
Its funny, that when you are small and imature you think you have
loads of time and the day is never ending.

I could game all day and there was always enough time.
Lately I hardly get time that is not intrupted or sacroficing other
time I could have spent outside.
I always seem to be rushing to do things, playing games is not always
on the top of things though I am still a heavy gamer though not as
hard core as I once was.
The issue with online stuff is you need time and can't save and I
don't have as much as I used to.

At 07:03 a.m. 25/05/2014, you wrote:

Hi Charlse.

I can see those methods working, but to be honest I have never been
a big one for chat rooms and wouldn't buy a game primarily intended

When I tried the demos of both mississippi and ten pin alley my
overwhelming thought was that both games would be good fun with
other opponents, either humans online or computer ones, but just
didn't work for me as solo games, indeed I don't know why the
developers of Mississippi didn't! put computer opponents in sinse so
much of the game like those events that affect all players just
won't work solo and it'd be no different from the computer player in
Jim's monopoly.

Ten pin alley, despite having great sounds and interesting features
just seemed to boil down to the same gameplay as something like
crazy darts, ie, wait for the right second within a sound and press
space. As I said probably a lot of fun with other people, but just
not enough gameplay solo, or at least that was my thought unless I
missed something when I tried the demo out.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Secrecy -was- Re: Speed of Sound Gaming needs betas!

2014-05-28 Thread Shaun Everiss

Kara, I have applied for a lot of jobs and got a few.
Though some will tell what the site or whatever is about, mostly I
get little information on what to do when applying.

I do do some research on who I am applying for if they have a website.
However in most cases I don't know till I geet where I am going.
When I do research, the initial brief is indeed brief.
Even when I get the documentation its usually a semi public document
with more details with standard forms.
Even the info I get on the day is basic and basically tells me what
I need to know.

I don't find out till I get started or at the end.
There are times where there is a need to have someone not know
especially with brain research so this is not unusual.
I have been doing research work for the last 5 years and a lot of the
pre test and advert briefs are as brief as this.
Naturally before accepting at least putting my name foreward I did a
search on the site for the company putting out the add.

I found out what it was and what it did.
I know they made easter egg hunt which I recognise for example.
However, with most of my work they tend to keep everything secret
till you start so this is not unusual at all.

At 09:24 a.m. 27/05/2014, you wrote:

HI Michael,

As a developer myself, are you absolutely sure that the level of
secrecy you are going for here is completely appropriate / necessary?

What I mean is that (as others have mentioned) at least knowing the
type of game would be important in your search for appropriate testers. Yes?

If you simply say we have a game to test, then you will probably
receive way more responses than you would need to screen and many
may not even be interested once you tell them what type of game it
is. I am assuming here that you are saving that info for private
correspondences.

If you are wanting people to begin testing without knowing what type
of game this is then you will likely also have many drop-outs once
the game type is revealed.

My point here is that you can save yourself and your potential
testers much grief and aggravation if you release just a bit more
info about what it is that people will be potentially testing.

I myself may also be interested in testing this game, for example,
however, if it turns out that the genre is not something in which I
am interested, then you will have wasted your time and mine in the
process. Know what I mean?

Just wanting to save you the troubles of this sort of approach.

Best of luck!

Smiles,

Cara :)

2014-05-28 Thread Shaun Everiss

Does not help that speech synths and text can not emulate a voice.
I don't know what people sound like.
I find myself having a different behaviour online that I do off.
Its quite hard for me to diferentiate between the offline and online
worlds from time to time.
When I type its like I am typing a document, if I mangle something I
can change it and unless I release the document I am ok even if I
majorly stuff up.
Online its the same but its out there perminantly so I need to be as
carefull as I am offline as when I am online.

That can get a bit hard at time.

Hello all (especially audiogame developers),
I was considering writing an audiogame server for speed of sound
gaming games, so that people playing our games could view
scoreboards from within the

game, chat to people playing the game they're playing (or other
games), and other features as needed. My question to everyone is:
Is this something people would want? That to audiogames players, and
to developers. A similar question:
Is this something you would use? If I were to make this public
outside of my own games I would give a library and header files
(most likely for c and/or

c++, maybe with others eventually as I figured out how to make them
big_smile
) and then have you register a company/admin account on my server so
you could add games, add other info, etc. It would hopefully be as
simple as possible

for the developer to add this to their games, for example:
Add library/header files, build. Then at certain key points in the
game, send something like: logon(username, ...), then
receive_message(...), etc.
Everything would be controled through the sending of messages. Many
of these messages would be easily put together by simply calling
something in c like:

send_chat(username/*the username of the person*/, message, /*any
other details, like send to other games, maybe a game key, game
password, etc*/);
So as you can see, all it would really require would be calling a
specific function at a certain time to send a chat, ask for a list
of people online,

ask for scores, etc.
Again: Would this be something an audiogamer would like to use? And
would this be something a developer would implement in their games?
Thanks all, I'm trying to get an idea of how popular this would be,
as even if I use it for my own games, if not written with multiple
companies in mind

it would not be as easy to add more game companies to the network
without a re-write.

Hello Tyler,

Your question is a bit confusing. All tabletop Dungeons and Dragons
games are by their very nature accessible for a blind person. All you
need is an electronic copy of the rule books and player's guides, some
braille dice, and a group of friends to play with. Other than
obtaining accessible documentation itself the game is fully accessible
for a blind player, and so I'd need to know what you don't think is
accessible about DND in order to answer your question. Are you talking
about computer games ore tabletop DND?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons & Dragons for the blind

2014-05-28 Thread dark

Hi Charlse.

Most rp dice I've seen don't have spots like the usual D6's you might get
with a game of monopoly or whatever. They have actual printed numbers which
aren't tactile, which makes sense given your dealing with dice with up to 20
sides so you'd have to be putting lots of spots in a small space.

I did find it was possible to get braille lables to fit the larger sized
dice, however the D20 had faces which were just too small, one reason why
the Gma dice program or similar is a better alternative for access.

If you've seen any rp dice with tactile faces I'd be very interested to hear
about it. I did recently hear of a company called 64 ounce games who were
looking into making D20's along with braille sleeves for some popular none
traditional card games but I'm not sure where that is or whether they do all
the various other types of dice needed for D&D.

Beware the Grue!

DArk.

Re: [Audyssey] a personal challenge and request

2014-05-28 Thread Jeremy Brown
Thomas,

As to the reasons you gave for not wanting to take on another task at
the current time, fully understood. I don't expect anyone to drop
current projects or hop to my command (nice though that might be, it's
horribly unrealistic). However, I haven't seen much discussion of
such conversions in other places, and thought to myself, if no one
knows there is a need, there's no reason to pursue it.

As to getting you a copy of the manual and cards, I'll do my best.
It's possible there is a copy of the manual online, I know I have
found such before. I'll look. As to the cards, the main country
cards are the first and foremost key, mission cards are a variation,
not part of the original classic game. That said, I have copies of
those andthey're brailled. I'll just have to dig them out of the
closet they're in.

As to spin-offs of the game, I'd be fully supportive of these. I
think once a classic engine was put into place, it would be relatively
easy to mod it to accept a number of other board configurations and/or
pieces.

Lastly, I don't necessarily feel that Risk is the key factor here.
I'd be ok with a game called Conquer the Kingdom that has 42
territories that hook up in odd ways and that allow you to play the
same mechanics in a different environment.

My main point was that, when game conversions are tried, they are
generally different games. Several people have pointed out to me some
of the difficulties involved with Risk or similar games, primarily
with making computer opponents interesting enough to present an
average challenge. I accept that limitation, but if we can get
something basic in the mix, then improvement can come afterward.

So, please, anyone who did so, do not take the presentation as a
demand: it was a notification of a desire. I'll have a hunt for the
manual, and the cards I can list from memory. I'll have to double
check the appropriate picture on each, but other than that I can
provide it. I could also provide a designer with how the countries
border etc.

Take care,

2014-05-28 Thread Dennis Towne
Tyler, are you looking for true D&D, or just an RPG with swords,
magic, dragons, and other D&D related things? There's a lot of online
servers for such things, just not many that are true D&D rules.

Re: [Audyssey] Speed of Sound Gaming needs betas!

2014-05-28 Thread Michael Taboada

Hey Folks,
At this time we are still accepting beta requests, especially from mac
(and older mac releases), and older windows releases, along with any
linux users. We are also setting up an invite-only list to discuss the
beta on. As soon as that's done we expect to start giving acceptance
notifications to the betas we have chosen. Hopefully soon after that you
will have your first beta!

please email to mich...@speedofsoundgaming.com with any things you

We are currently accepting beta testers for windows, mac and linux.
Remember that everything given to you as part of this beta is not to

the group of beta testers, and for no reason are you to talk about the

if we consider
your feedback valuable, then we'll give you a free copy of the game

Again, please send emails to mich...@speedofsoundgaming.com!
Thanks all, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons & Dragons for the blind

2014-05-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Not for DND. The standard DND dice have numbers on them instead of
holes or dots which makes them difficult to feel. Plus the 10 sided
and 20 sided dice makes them hard to properly label given the unique
shape of the die. So I don't think using standard RPG die in this case
would work given they are not your standard 6 sided die with holes
that can be easily felt.

Cheers!

Hi Dark,

Well, you are in luck. I found a copy of Super Tux for Windows at
http://supertux.lethargik.org/download.html
as well as Mac and Linux downloads. You might want to swing by there
and give the game a try.

They have both the stable and developmental versions available, and I
for one am going to grab a copy to install on my son's PC since he
loves the game.

Cheers!
