Hi Shaun,

Although I definitely haven't been into audio games, played as many or
followed the scene for as long as you so can't really comment on whether
it

has slowed down or not, I think that audio games will keep going. Yep, we
have developers go but like you said we have so many people getting into
game engines like BGT and some of these people will be the big developers
of tomorrow, plus the big developers we have today keep designing new
games

and I don't doubt new developers will be along in the future to

As for audio games itself maybe like you said it has slowed down , but
what

I see is actually real advances in the audio games being produced, with
games pushing the boundaries of what we expect like with swamp. Also
there

are many new things/projects on their way such as the 3d engine (sorry I
can't remember what it was called I want to say genesis but am not sure
if

that's it or not) being developed by Thomas, there's the new 3D RPG game
that Aprone is developing that will work with the see munkey and I'm sure
that other developers are working on new titles to

So I do think audio games will continue to grow and develop and I would be
really interested to see in a few years the quality and types of games
there will be. Agreed though that I think we will continue to see an
increase in games for platforms like IOS etc. I do think though that PC's
will continue to be a part of most households for many many more years to
come, in fact I know many people who play main stream games and prefer to
play them on a PC. I think although we have smart phones and stuff I
think

that some people don't want to spend the money on these devices which
once brought can't be upgraded as easily as say a PC where people can
replace and upgrade components as they wish.

Hi denis.
just read the article.
Its quite good.
One of my frustrations I have is actually finding more content.
I have brought or at least owned or at least played on others systems
amost

99% of all blind games in existance.
One thing the article did not touch on was the bgt and other toolkit
engines

making it easier for the average user to put together a game.
In fact this is the reason I still can find the occational game.
I am in fact testing one such game series right now called deathmatch.
And I can appreciate how hard it is to develop games for the blind I am
not

programming it but at the same time I am previding sfx and beta testing
things as well as extra things.
I am not even hacking it and its hard enough.
The article was vary well written and definately an enjoyable read.
As for a cure for blindness that is probably as far off as a mainstream
game.
while some conditions such as genetic blindness and maybe detatched retena
can be prevented/handled right now.
at least with my condition once its detatched for long enough ie since
birth

me being 31 there is no way to actually even get that fixed.
And its all cash for the big companies.
If anything I suspect that in another hundred years or so we will probably
loose a lot of the startup developers that have been moving along.
Most have lives that mean they can't produce that much all the time.
So I think we may depend on the toolkit engines more and more.
And even eventually that to may dry up.
I used to think the blind gaming industry could continue at a sertain
level.

And while bits of it are moving quite quickly I have seen the gaming
industry almost stopped barely ticking over sertainly not as fast paced as
it was in the beginning and I have been on here since
1995 which is vary close to that beginning.
I do see the end of all blind gaming though.
We are only moving right now because of muds, web based games, opensource
games, free games and those created by the engines and other kits.
True there are still a bunch of the devs that still produce games, and a
few core ones still continue for now.
What is a major concern is that no really new big names are replacing the
older ones.
Once the main comercial devs go, that will be it.
I don't mean that I will see the end of gaming, I am sure that for
the next 1-300 years blind gaming will find a way to continue
slowly grinding along.
But unless there is some big push wether it be mainstreaming or funding, I
think its prity much going

Hi Keith,

Alter Aeon does have a prompt too, but when you use MushZ to play it is
turned off by default and you get the infos through sounds from the
client.

In many games it helps to type help prompt. In others the prompt is part
of
a settings or configuration screen, so try typing help settings or help
configure. That should work most times. In cases where this didn't work
I

just asked around in the game.

Cyberassault takes place on earth (motown (detroit) as the starting point,
after World war 4 I think. The world is full of nuke sites, and mutants,
along with cyborgs, freelance mercenaries, and several types of psionic
users. High tech weapons are used, along with more mundaine melee and
now a days firearms. There is a Bavis and Butthead area, a terminator
area, and even an aliens area. Predators also. Come on in and have a
great time.

My characters are falconer, reece, mindburn, direwolf, jackyl, and fergus

Hi Folks,
Here is something new for Jim Kitchen to create,
Hasbro MONOPOLY EMPIRE
Own the world's top brands in the Monopoly Empire game!
Choose one of the uniquely branded gold tokens, move around the board and
start building your Empire! Buy your favorite brands one by one and slide
their billboards onto your Empire tower: the game is a race to the top!
Collect rent from your rivals based on your tower height. And be the first
player to fill your tower with billboards to win!

Play is similar to classic Monopoly, but instead of building a property
empire, you're tasked with buying up key brands and adding them to your
'Empire Tower'. Buy, trade and take over brands with Empire cards.

With the Monopoly Empire game, you can own some of the biggest brands in
the world! Every space on the board is an iconic brand, including Xbox,

Hi there

programing so it's a good program to start with, but I just didn't know how
much work went into making a game.

well sometimes lists do come up with stuff.
There are sertainly more things on the forums than the email list these
days.
A lot of new projects, thanks to bgt and other things there are a lot of
beginner hackers and such putting together a lot of good non vanilla
stuff.

I am envolved in one such project testing and doodling with sfx.
Its interesting and empowering when you get something and think that
whatever it is is just a piece of pure crap.

Its another thing when you can actually do something about it being so.
And its sometimes hard to do, finding sounds and other things that fit etc
is a challenge in itself.

you don't know as a user sometimes just how hard things are.
A thing may sound quite crappy when in fact it probably wasn't destined to
be total crap but ended up being so because the dev couldn't find
something to replace it with.

I have come over some of that myself.
Some stuff is obviously junk but I have not been able to find a way to fix
it without issue.
In the end I just had to switch around the best of the stuff to make it
work, its not satisfying but for now that will have to do.

that I can't keep it in any longer.
You have several awesome games under your auspices, and I would like
to request an update to two of them. tHe update is similar in both
games, although a couple of thoughts on implementation are provided:
The first, and in my opinion easiest, is an update to your golf game
to include local multiplayer. No no. I'm not asking for the big giant
doozie of them all, network communications. I just want to sit around
and play a nice game of pass the keyboard Golf. It seems to me that
standard golfing rules would be pretty easy to throw in: farthest from
the hole gets to stroke, ties broken by accuracy or at random, and
maybe a stroke limit of something like 10 strokes over par to stop
your friend from harassing you too badly.

The other game I'd like to talk about is Trucker.
You guessed it. I'd love to have multiplayer added in for that too,
and again, this is local multiplayer, so it'd be pretty easy to do.
The hard part would be slightly reworking the interface to account for
more than one driver at a time, but I figure it could work something
 like this.
No matter what happens, you have to press enter to allow an hour to
pass in multiplayer mode, so say Bob and Jake are driving. Jake goes
to sleep in the truckstop, but Bob wants to keep on going.
Traditionally, Jake would hear a bunch of snoring, followed by an
alarm, but in multiplayer Bob drives however fast he wants to go and
so forth, while Jake has to press enter for each hour of sleep. Of
course, you could just decide that he's opted in for the full eight
hours, nothing can change that, or you could offer him the opportunity
to end his sleep early, just as a nice little change.

I love both of these games, and my friends and I would love to play
them together, but the prospect of having five computers in a circle
and trying to hear hour own thing and not the other guys' and trying
to keep relatively synchronized... no fun.

The only other game that even remotely makes sense to be multiplayer,
in my opinion, is Starmule, and that one seems most fun alone, but
 that's personal.
Football involves a little too much rock paper scissors style and
secret strategy to make an effective local multiplayer, and I can't
think of any other games that aren't and ought to be, in my opinion.

I hope that you will seriously consider adding local multiplayer to
Golf and Trucker, as I feel it would add a whole new dimension to some
 already great games.
For added fun, it might even be nice to have computer controlled
 players,

 too.

Jim: If this already exists, where can it be found? If not, how about an
option in the next update that marks, in the list of golf courses to
choose from, whether a course has been played? Using this feature, you
could play all of the courses available without replaying any. Then you
could look at the records to see how you did.

Another feature that might be a cool addition would be a running average
score in comparison to what par would be after that many holes. For
example, if you play a course that has 72 as par and score 70, then a
course that has 70 as par, and you shoot a score of 70, the average par
would be 71 and you have shot an average of 70. Overall, so far, you're
shooting 1 under par. Over time, you could combine these 2 features and
see how you did as far as par for all courses. After all courses have
been played at least once, select the random course choice and see if you
can beat your overall performance.

Hi James,

I don't know of anything that teaches you to develop in C++
specifically from a blind persons point of view, but any good book
should teach you the basics without getting too visual. One book I
would highly recommend is Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days by Jesse
Liberty. The 4th edition of the book is all up to date, and takes you
from absolute newbie to an intermediate user of the language. It is
laid out as a three week course, IE 21 days, in which you begin with
simple Hello World type programs and work your way up to more advanced
applications. One place you could read the book is on the Safari site
http://safari.oreilly.com
with a 14 day free trial subscription.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

Yeah, I don't believe that I ever played a text adventure game back when I
had sight. I played games on my Atari 2600 and Atari 800 XL home
computer. And games that I wrote like my casino games, Star Mule etc.
But back then I also was not yet connected to a BBS or the Internet. It
wasn't until I became totally blind and got my first talking computer that
I got connected to the BBS PC Ohio.

Speaking of spelling, some times in my games I misspell words on purpose.
One that I always do is reed with two E's rather than read. You know to
make sure that it says do you wish to reed the instructions rather than do
you wish to red the instructions. And I spelled the game yachts-e rather
than yahtzee just because the sapi5 voices say it better that way.

But I am not a good speller, never have been. The tag line below is the
truth.

Hi everyone,
I have been wanting to play candy crush and song pop for a really long
time, however at this time they both seem to be very inaccessible. Would
anyone want to join me in contacting the developer?

I plaied it for like a hour or two. she got home from work and I told her

But yeah I have actually played minigolf, boling, and normal golf with

I have found it extremely boring and slow playing.
But then its the same with the other stuff I enjoy gambling at a casino in
the kitchensinc universe and also I enjoy driving the truck thinking on
numbers for fuel and other things when I should knock off for the day etc.
One thing I think we really need in the next generation of games are games
which are not just crappy crap.
I don't mean our games in general are crap, however I have noticed in the
sighted world that a lot of stuff is just point shoot.
I really harken back to the old days on if games etc where you had to
think to save your meat and while we don't really have an issue I woory
that we may get like that.

Randomness ofcause and other things.
Smuglers 5 is an example.
its got a large database of stories, events words and things and mucks it
all up into 1 junky pile.
Now Its know that things are limited but it can be put in such a way that
you never know what will happen which is why I still play it.

In a battle I could win or suddenly I could be on the loosing end.

Mach 1 can have other cars on the track but it does not support a steering

Reinhard, the See Munkey is a device I'm selling that is worn on your head
and tracks its position as you move. The data from the device can be read
by games or software to give an immersive 3D experience or to offer up a
new form of input. Information on the device can be found here.
www.kaldobsky.com/audiodevices/

Another update:

Hatred and I have been making a lot of progress on the RPG engine's
improvements. We turned a small microphone into an ear mounted one so
that the engine could be calibrated to the actual amount of sound, and
audio blind spots, created for each ear as sounds move around you. It
took quite a few separate tests but it will be worth it in the end. It
currently blows away the older version I had from before.

We've already been talking about the next goal, so once the engine is
fixed up and the duck hunt game is posted, we will turn our attention to
improving the See Munkey firmware. Just like the engine's sound code, the
See Munkey's firmware has several small problems that keep it from being
as good as I'd like it to be. When by myself I was buried in work and
wasn't getting around to fixing the code, but now that I have help it will
be much easier! :D Yay!

As another reminder, there are still some devices left in the online
store. I'll be taking some to the post office tomorrow, so if anyone
orders one in the next 12-or-so hours it will get mailed along with them.
This isn't actually a very good excuse for me to once again advertise,
since any orders that don't come in on time will just get mailed out
Tuesday or Wednesday, Haha. I do want to remind people about them though,
since I want to sell the last of these before placing my next big parts
order.

Hi Chris and all,

Well, Bavisoft closing just happened over the last few days so I'm not
at all surprised you hadn't heard about it before now.The only reason
I know of it is because Sebby posted a notice to the Audiogames.net
forum about reporting them to the proper Internet authorities for
falsifying their contact info, and they in turn forced Bavisoft to
shutdown. So Bavisoft is history now.

Cheers!

I am not about to read 40 messages, so I will just comment on this first
one. I agree with Thomas on his points. While I don't play many audio
games mainly because I don't care for the content when I have other games
on my ps2/ps3 that I play more, I see it all the time with this community
that people aren't happy, that they bitch and moan about keys/cracks of
games all the time after a game is released, and even after it's been
released. However, you can't put the blind community at 100% fault. The
same thing goes on with sighted gamers. But since we are a relatively
smaller community it hits a lot harder. If you don't have a thick skin
and

can just let comments roll off, you're going to quit. This is why I
don't

develop. One reason is because I don't have the time to do it, the other
reason is if I did and started to get a whole lot of complaints, I know
I'd explode on somebody.
I've said it before. These debs go through a lot of work to create a
game

for everyone to enjoy. It takes a while to code and find bugs and get
rid

of them. I'm glad Jeremy has not quit his work because right now, he's
the only one that is making modern games for us. If he wasn't here, I
doubt that TRTR would've been made or any of the other games that are
starting to come out. The same thing happened with Entombed. That was
the closest that I've ever seen an audio game come to final fantasy.
I'd

like to see more like that, however I know that that starts to get
harder

because with more complex things you want happening, the more code you
need to put in/the more time you need to put into the game.
Another person who has been working with this for a while is Dentin.
He's

actually put in code for us to make Alter better and easier to play.
Not

only does he put up with sighted people bitching at him because
equipment

gets dented or things are really hard, but he's putting up with the
blind

community complaining when mush-z doesn't work. Hopefully most of those
messages get sent to the right channel but who knows.
I don't know if I'll read this thread after I send this message. But
I'll

repeat what I said at the beginning of this reply. While we are a
smaller

community, we can not put all the blame on the blind people. This kind
of

thing happens on a much larger scale with the sighted players. However,
if we keep this up pretty soon you're going to have no one left who
wants

to make games for the blind and then you all will start complaining
about

how you all have nothing that matches up with what todays consoles have.
And whose fault will that be but your own? Not everyone can play todays
games on the ps3 or Xbox360. I know I'm having trouble with the little
amount of vision that I have. It's almost impossible for me to play
anything new that comes out because the print is to small for me to read
or I can't see what is on the screen. I know it's way harder if not
completely impossible for totals to play anything but fighting games
which

I can not stand whatsoever. They just bore me after about 15 minutes.
As

I said, keep it up and see what happens.
Mike.

Hey guys, sorry for the long delay since the last time I've updated
this post. The past few weeks have been very busy, but also quite
productive. My buddy Hatred moved up from Texas and we've spent the
past few weeks getting him familiar with all of the projects I'm in
the middle of. He has been helping me build See Munkeys for the
past few days, so once the next big order comes in, I'll be able to
have them built and ready to sell at a much faster rate. We also
worked on new construction methods and ordered some new tools that
cut down on the time and effort needed to put them together.

People have been asking when new devices will be in the store, so
I'm reporting in to say that the last 7 are listed before I'll have
to order new parts. Another reason for the delay was that one of my
parts suppliers sent me some bad parts and it threw off my normal
routine.

As for the RPG, Hatred and I have been going over parts of the game
engine that I haven't been happy with. We are improving them by
quite a bit actually, so I'm very happy about that. We will also be
doing our best to get the duck hunt game out as soon as we can. The
engine changes we're making also affect the code for duck hunt, so
that's another reason that small game isn't further along, but in
the end the changes will be well worth it. They greatly improve sound
quality.

I hope to do a better job of keeping people updated on my
progress. I'll also bug Hatred to make more audio games for
himself, haha! Having him here with me is going to really help in
just about every way. It is always good to have someone around to
lend a helping hand and to keep you motivated when projects drag on
and on for long hours. :D LOL!

A thought on impatience: Some people gripe about the length of time taken
by developers to come out with a new game. Some people gripe if they
don't get a registration key right away. Some people gripe about the fact
that they don't have enough games to play. Strangely enough, these 3
complaints come from pretty much the same few people. These are also the
same people who want cheat codes very shortly after they get a new game.

Have you noticed what always seems to happen when these complainers really
get on a roll?

James North produced many very good games and then quit. Why did this
occur?? Liam has voiced frustration, to say the least, and has openly
voiced a consideration of quitting. Why? Other producers of games have
also vacated the premises. Guess why?

I commend those developers who have stuck it out and continue working for
those of us who do care about and respect them. For those of us who
don't, and who only care about themselves and what they want, when they
want it and no later, what's it going to take for you to learn what you
cause? It's about time you grow! up! and think about someone other than
you for a change.

Yes, I'm angry, and I think I have a darned good reason to be. Although I
don't create games, I care about those who do, and it just flat burns me
up when you drive these creators away with your selfish and downright
childish behavior!

On TV, baseball games are far worse than football. They don't give the
count often enough for you to know what's going on, they don't tell the
result when you hear the crack of the bat. They might give a player's
name and say, Out! or What a throw! or something like that. And
before going to a commercial during a pitching change or at the end of a
half of an inning, they don't give the number of runs, hits, errors, and
men on base, nor do they give the score. Yet, during the game, they give
all of the batter's stats, they point out how he holds the bat, his
batting stance, and stuff for people to work on to improve their own play.
They point out the pitcher's motion, how he releases the ball, and all
that stuff but don't describe the game action. Radio play by play with
commentary is far superior.

Subject: [Audyssey] a favor to ask to the mush z users on list

Hi, Oriel and Dennis have been working together to streamline the mush z
package (removing files and whatnot that would allow for a more fluid
download and use of the mush z client). But, alas, the older versions
had a mud game in the world folder that when you would start the game you
had to make a character, and one of the races was dark elf. I've asked
both Dennis (Dentin) and Oriel (kurek) if they remember what the file was.
Neither of them remember what the game was. So, I am asking any mush z
users to look in their wolrd folders (inside the mush z folder (usually
in the my documents folder), and see if you have any .mcl files. If so,
could you copy and send them to me. This will not give me any personal
data (passwords or whatnot). All that info is saved on the game servers.
I just want to the game files to find out waht game that was I was talking
about. I know that there is one called hellmoo.mcl, and there are 2 games
that start and sound like german (which are not the ones I was talking
about).

Thanks to anyone who responds to this message.

Dear All,

My name is Alexandra. I have just subscribed because I was always
interested in games, especially action ones. I hope I can learn a lot from
all of you and at some point teach you something too.
I would like, if I may, to ask if someone on the list is on second life
or has ever used it please? I have tried to download the text sl
application but it won't open for some reason. Having only registered with
second life today, I am wondering how accessible is it.

I wold be very grateful for any advice you can give me.

Hi,

I have put a new file up on my site.

Strip War is an X rated adult card game where you choose to play strip
war, strip poker or strip black jack against 3 computer bots, or against
other human players. (which you provide.
In version 3 I fixed the bug where the comments toggle did not work when
playing black jack against bots.
The game should now write text files such as the striplog.txt file to your

Have fun.

Hi James,

I don't know about Jim, but for what it is worth I think you would
probably be better off starting with BGT. While learning a full blown
programming language like C++, C#, or Visual Basic .NET has their
advantages BGT is really designed to get you up and developing quickly
without a lot of complicated overhead which makes it an ideal choice
for a beginner like yourself.

For example, in BGT the engine wraps DirectInput, DirectSound, and
SAPI in such a way you can begin using those components right away
without knowing how they work. If you decide to take on a language
like VB .NET you will have to download and install SlimDX, read
documentation on how to use DirectX with VB .NET, and will have to
learn how to handle Com components like SAPI separately. You can't
just pick them up and use them without learning a good deal of the
language first. Therefore from a point of view of ease of use and
simplicity BGT is really the ideal choice.

However, if you are thinking of developing games for Mac OS, Linux,
iOS, etc then you'll probably want to learn a full blown programming
language like C++ to begin with. Same goes for if you are thinking of
writing other software besides games. It all depends on what you
intend to do with your skills. :D

Cheers!

Hey there, thank you!

I should ask though, had you ever used the sniper rifle I developed for
Jedi Quake?

I specifically created it so that it did three things to address all of
your points. :)

• it used more ammo than normal

• It enabled long-range sniping

• It required a delay of several seconds to fire a second shot

I too, wanted very much to eliminate the whole stand in one place and hold
down the control key behavior! lol! And yes, I and other players
successfully and routinely tagged players from long distances and
occasionally even got off a second shot too. Many of us could also
dispatch them without them knowing what the heck just happened. ;)

I also added an EM Pulse to Jedi Quake specifically for taking out all
electronic weapons so players would need to only rely on mechanical,
slower-firing weapons or weapons with limited ammo.

Anyway, no worries on your opinions of the gameplay, I just want to get
feedback as your point of view wasn't one I've heard in regard to AQ so
far, that's all.

Yes, sure, by all means write me off-list if you like. I do think this
discussion would be great here though too.

Thanks a bunch and talk soon!…

Smiles,

Cara AKA Frag Doll :)

The trouble with translating 3d fps games into pure audio is that you are

would like it to be. It was a lot of fun, but too often I found myself and
saw other people just holding down the control key while trying to aim
with the arrow keys. It isn't really a design thing, and I think Audio
Quake and road to Rage have tapped into something good. And sniping
doesn't work as complexly in audio shooters as in sighted ones. Sure you
have long range rifles, but I've never been able to snipe from somewhere
far and above my opponent. And I think that aiming could be refined a bit
more as well, so that it isn't just centre your opponent by turning and
then just mashing the fire button. If you watch videos or watch sighted
people playing games like Call of Duty or Counterstrike, the shots don't
come nearly as often... because for one, ammo is scarce... and for
another, there are more precise aiming and or lock on features. Just some
thoughts. Having said that though, I love Audio Quake and Road to Rage...
because they're the closest we've gotten to those types of games. There
are just things that could be taken further is all. We could always
discuss this offlist as well since this is somewhat of a pet interest of
mine too, I'm just not a programmer. lol

HI Clement,

I'm curious why you're saying that Audio Quake was 'too lucky?

The original (pre-Jedi Quake) version is Quake itself with only the
adaptive features in place to allow VI players to play the game.

Can you clarify your comments a bit for me? I ask as the first-person 3D
genre is obviously a pet interest of mine. ;)

So I'm curious to hear more feedback on how this has worked for other VI
players.

Actually, that rifle was one of the things I loved about Jedi Quake when I
tried it. I got pretty good with it at one point, but haven't played AQ in
so long... should probably give it a go again. I just wish we had more
multiplayer fps titles. I've said before that I think Swamp's base combat
and weapons would translate wonderfully to a pvp game. But it's been a
dream of mine to be able to enjoy something as complex and strategic as
Counterstrike for a long time, which is why I wish weapons in games like
AQ would have different properties other than just rate of fire and amount
of shots that it can hold, etc. The remaining thing for me too... all the
audio fps titles I've played require too many shots to kill an enemy. In a
mainstream shooter, it's possible if you're skilled enough to pick people
off with one shot or two that are well-placed. I wish there'd be some way
to implement more precise aiming. Targetting headshots is something that
happens in regular shooters all the time, yet there hasn't been an
implementation of that in any sort of form that I'm aware of. Swamp in
particular, with the whole zombie thing would probably benefit greatly
from a head shot mechanic, given the fact that in most contemporary
fiction zombies die the fastest when shot in the head.

Subject: [Audyssey] Quake / 3D FPS games -was- Re: Mysteries of the
AncientsConsiderations

Wayne,

Alter Aeon runs all the time and can't be shut off. The game saves
itself,

and when you log off your character it's automatically saved.
You don't need to save manually, because the game always takes care of it
for you.

Hi all,

since there is much talk about Alter Aeon on this list right now and it
seems like quite a few people on here are playing the game, I thought I
could quickly introduce my character.

So, my name on there is Adreana, I'm a first class warrior with thief as
second, necro as third, cleric as fourth and mage as fifth class.
Currently I'm working my way through the quests on Archais.

So, if anyone once to say hi in game or needs some help on the newbie
quests, feel free to send me a tell there.

Happy gaming and best regards
Sarah

Clement, the details surrounding the RPG are a little more fuzzy, which is
why I've left them out. The headset had to be developed first so the game
is still in its most primitive stages where anything could still be
changed.

One notable feature of the RPG is that I'm trying to build the entire game
using accessible tools, which I'm designing first of course. The goal is
to be able to say that the community has access to the exact same tools
that were used to create the game, proving that custom adventures,
monsters, and maps can be made that match the rest of the game in terms of
quality and complexity. People will be able to set up their own servers
running their own custom map and campaigns. I say map instead of maps
because the game engine turns all of the map data into a single map rather
than needing to split it up like many games do. If we compare this to
Swamp maps, I believe I previously figured out that this game could run a
map more than a million times the size. So you'd basically die of old age
before being able to explore it all, but then again you'd die of old age
before being able to design such a map.

much into a headtracking piece of equipment and are selling

audyssey in the loop.

Hey guys,

I spend most of my time on the audiogames.net forum, and every now and
then I'm reminded that I've shared news with them but forgot to post it
here as well. My apologies, people of the audyssey list! :D LOL.

After my 2.9 patch for Swamp I began working on a new project. To make
a long story short, I learned I was going to need to get a second job in 2
months so I wanted to make the most of them. I officially ended
development on Swamp and have dedicated myself to getting some stuff
accomplished in the 2 months I have left. After I get the additional job
I will have a lot less time available to work on projects, so I don't know
how that will impact my efforts as a game developer.

The new project can actually be thought of as 2 separate, but linked,
projects. My new game is going to be an RPG based in the
Daytona/Castaways storyline. It will take place many years after the
Daytona game, and you will learn what happened to the leader from the end
of the Castaways game.

The mouse hardware requirement for Swamp was a terribly unpopular move
for a very very long time. Using the word unpopular may even be an
understatement, ROFL! Well that battle was fought and won, and I feel the
audio games community is a better place now that the mouse is an accepted
tool for gaming. This opens up more options for game developers, and that
is always a good thing! Well this RPG is going to follow in those foot
steps and require a new piece of hardware. In a move that will go down in
audio games' history as an epic mistake, or as a revolution, my RPG will
require players to have a 3D head tracking headset I have named the See
Munkey. (I still crack a smile when I say See Munkey out loud.) While
wearing the headset in the RPG you can simply move your head around to
move the head of your in-game character. This will give a more natural
playing experience plus allow you to easily look up or down to get a 3D
feeling of your
surroundings. To determine the locations of sounds in the real world, we
naturally move our heads to see how the sounds will change. This gives us
far more data than we can get from being perfectly still, which is how we
normally are in games. I'm trying to give players that same advantage
inside of the game world.

Development of this device has burned through 3 weeks, which is more
than I planned for. The good news is that I not only have a working
prototype but I've already ordered a shipment of parts to produce 13 more.
More detailed information about the Munkey will show up once I'm ready
to sell them but here are the basics:

The device clips on to your existing headphones, or clips on to a
plastic headband that comes with it in case you use ear buds instead of
headphones. It does not produce sound to replace your headphones, which
is a common misconception, but rather tracks the orientation of your head
in all 3 axis. This data can be read by games and programs to customize
the experience. This is similar to how a game can be designed to receive
input from a mouse or a joystick.

The device can be used by other developers! If these do find their way
into the hands of many players, it will be a brand new tool for
developers. It is my understanding that BGT is already set up to handle
serial communications, which means programmers who use BGT will be able to
incorporate the headset immediately into their own projects. Other
developers can easily look up how to read and write to the device using
serial communication, which will give them the same ability.

Games that aren't designed for the headset won't suddenly become 3D
when you use it. This is the same as playing a game that isn't designed
to work with a joystick or mouse. Separate software can be used to map
the See Munkey to the mouse or keys though, which means you can have an
interesting new way to play even those games. As an example, Swamp is not
designed to use the headset yet I was still able to play using it. I
mapped turning my head to the mouse X-axis, forward to tilting my head
down, and backward to tilting my head back. I didn't do it at the time,
but I could have also made tilting my head left or right to perhaps side
step, reload my weapon, or toggle the radar. It wouldn't replace the need
for the keyboard, but it was definitely a new playing experience!

So yeah, that's pretty much what I've been doing lately.

I'll answer some questions

Hi Lenron,

If you are interested in learning to program I can think of a couple
of places to get started. If you are a citizen of the United States
and have a Bookshare account they have a number of books from O'reilly
on their web site on a number of programming languages such as Visual
Basic .NET. If you want a larger selection and are willing to spend
$50 a month you can get a Safari account on
http://safari.oreilly.com
and read hundreds of programming books on various languages, math and
physics used in games, and tech articles, etc. Its a pretty awesome
deal for a person wanting college level and corporate level
documentation.

Cheers!
