Re: [Audyssey] Getting Games on Windows 7
Thanks, Thom! (I'm a big fan of USA Games, BTW, and have been on this list before.) Kelby - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward This issue has been discussed many times on the list, but rather than ask you to go through the list archives I'll just give you the basic rundown on games and Windows 7. As many games were written in an older language called Visual Basic 6, which no longer ships with Windows 7, one way to get the required dependencies you need is to go to http:///www.kitchensinc.net and download his Winkit setup. This will install a working Visual Basic 6 runtime and the missing DirectX 8 libraries required for many older games. Second, as many older games are not UAC compatible you may need to disable it. To do this do control+escape, typ UAC, into the search bar and press enter. Set it to 0, and restart. This will allow the games to save games in c:\Program Files and other restricted areas of the OS that were not restricted in XP. Cheers! I can say, as a Conservative evangelical, that I am absolutely sickened by what Nicol just related. There's idolatry, then there's just fun and stories (which, really, is what a lot of video games are--stories.) I just do not understand the attitude of some religious folks that if you read a supernatural book, watch violent television or the like then you're automatically a horrible person. Well guess what? Re: [Audyssey] Final Conflict Strategies
Thanks a bunch, Tom. I had part of that worked out, but it was setting the ship's on the right course that tripped me up. I have a couple more questions. 1. Is there a way to tell the exact coordinates of a ship? This would help me immensely to try and get everything into formation. 2. Will the v-formation I'm describing work well for shooting down the enemy? Kelby "Oh Adam's sons, how cleverly you defend yourself from all that might do you good." --Aslan the Lion - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward Hi Kelby, Good question. That particular formation would be fairly tricky to set up, but can be done with a lot of practice. What I would do is send all of my ships to a staging area, a place to assemble the fleet, start two ships out, wait a move, send the second two ships out, wait a move, and then trail the fleet with the Defiant. Now, if you want to create a v type for mation you'll have to give the ships different headings for a couple of moves until they spreed out. For example if you want a wide v formating and you were heading towards Cardassian Space set one side of the formation to a heading of 325 and the other to 45. After a move or so you would get a v style formation, and then you can set all ships to 0 so that they then head straight up the starmap. The closest thing to an online pokemon battle game I had fun with was Netbattle, where you could connect to a server or host your own, make a team of pokemon and battle it out with one of your friends. It was a bit tough to adapt to but it was accessible and fun. Don't know that its still aroudn though and don't know the url. -- From: "Constantine" Hi So, here I am, I started playing this game at: http://tppcrpg.net/ Its quite rediculous, really. For anyone that knows anything about pokemon, level 4 pokemon, no matter what kind, cannot learn hyper beam. I mean yeah if your crazy enough to use a tm on one. So, my charmander kept getting demolished by these pokemon using crazy attacks. Not to mention, how exactly are you supposed to battle and make money, and catch pokemon and what not? How do you get to each town? Those are just a few of my questions. Someone said this game was great - it is to a point until the novelty wears off and it gets so confusing that I had to wait a few hours before I tried again. So you register, pick your starter pokemon. There is no help at all to be found here. I can battle a trainer, yay. Then, suddenly, out of nowhere, it says a wild pokemon appears! So, I start fighting. This pokemon is level 4, the same as mine. It uses icebeam. Seriously...it can use ice beam, flame thrower, surf, and tackle. Hows that for randomness? Then, I look at my pokemons attacks. Know what it had? Flamethrower, watergun, tackle, and scratch! That's when I gave up on it. Re: [Audyssey] pokemon online RPG?
Can someone give me tips on making this accessible?! I've wanted to play this for YEARS but haven't been able to figure out the interace! Kelby "Oh Adam's sons, how cleverly you defend yourself from all that might do you good." --Aslan the Lion - Original Message - From: "Matheus" ok guys, get the version 0.9.6 of pokemon netbattle here: HTTP://www.tvsian.info/netbattle/downloads/Setup096.exe and the version 0.9.7 get here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/jm63j0 to play, install the 0.9.6, get the 0.9.7, and put the .exe file in the folder c:\program files\netbattle and click yes to replace there are instructions in english and portuguese in the txt version, so don't worry if you see any strange names in these .txt files. and almost all of the functional servers are portuguese and they for you logic will have a strange name, but don't worry, try asking in the channel tow, if anyone talk english, i'm almost sure someone will do. and oh my god, searching on the servers instead of pokemon i found a casino game, that is playable with the client, strange!!! ok if you have problems, just say. hth. -Mensagem original- De: "Shadow Dragon" You don't raise your pokemon, you just build a team, picking your pokemon's levels, attacks, evolutions etc. Then you connect to a server and find another trainer to battle. Its not really an rpg per say, just a competition game to see who can build the best team. But its still pretty fun for what its worth. It'd be cool if someone would be willing to host a regular server for battles, the public netbattle server went down a long time ago. -- From: "Constantine" Sure...hehe. How exactly does it work? Can you raise your pokemon and battle them? contact details: email: tcwoo...@shaw.ca and others msn: the_conman...@hotmail.com skype: the_conman283 system details: Hp pavillion dv5220CA notebook pc AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-37 2.0 GHZ, 1024 mb DDR ram, Fujitsu 100 gb 4500 RPM Hard Drive, connecsant AC-link audio - Original Message - From: "Matheus" i found the netbattle game anyone wants it? i'll post the link wen i finish downloading it. -Mensagem original- De: "Shadow Dragon" I've never seen a good pokemon RPG. Maybe someone else here understands it more than i do. anyone have any ideas? thanks --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. This is getting a little off-topic, so I've changed the message to reflect that. Does anyone know how/where I can get either the Sepstral or e-speak voices, as I have heard good things about each? If I were going to go through the difficulty of writing a .NET wrapper for a speech system I'd likely do it for something like the Cepstral voices or E-Speak. Cheers. Re: [Audyssey] Entombed
I still don't understand how to target specific body parts. Do you hold down the number as soon as you press enter on the enemy, or before that? I really do not understand it. Kelby "Oh Adam's sons, how cleverly you defend yourself from all that might do you good." --Aslan the Lion - Original Message - From: "Jason Allen" Yes, the latest test version isn't balanced. However, you can seriously tip the scales in your favor. Here are some tips: Dual wield. Equip the largest weapon you can in each hand. This gives you two attacks per round. A two-handed weapon like those large clubs the ogres use is deadly. You can get an idea how good a weapon is by it's description, but a larger weapon is almost always better than smaller ones. So the order is (for now until more stuff is put in): daggers, short swords, clubs, long swords, and large ogre clubs. Don't forget to use the potions in your inventory to heal. Zombie rot potions cure zombie rot. Anytime you're bitten by a zombie, you'll contract the disease, so be sure to use those. Attack the biggest threat first. Orcs always have weapons and are much nastier than goblins. Ogres are extremely dangerous, but slow. The wolves are nasty but usually easy to kill. Any heroic monster is going to be much harder than usual. Zombies can only be killed if you destroy their head (and other means but I won't spoil it). So target their head with the number pad 8, or with the number 8 if you don't have a numpad. The difficulty will wildly swing back and forth until I get most of the abilities and spells in. The really neat thing was that aforementioned procedural generation along with the uploading of user content. The two combined to create what were, I gather, very visually distinctive and unique worlds. The sense of possibilities and exploration there was tremendous. It's this sense of infinite possibilities which I like about Fallthru, even though that isn't in the scifi mode and isn't multiplayer. Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?
I've been meaning to check out Fallthrough. Is there anything I need to do with JAWS to make sure everything's accessible, or will it run fine on its own? Kelby "Wake up, comrades, your compassion is killing us!" --Anonymous - Original Message - From: "dark" Hi zack. I haven't actually tried fallthrough myself. on my old desktop, whenever I attempted to run dos programs under xp, I got truly horrible lag issues. On my laptop and new desktop though, these don't seem to happen at all. I'll investigate fallthrough sinse that sense of infinite possibilities sounds deffinately fun. Oh, and to anticipate questions, it can be downloaded from http://www.classicgaming.com/ascii/ though they concentrate on rogue and other aski graphics games, they also seem to have some doss text adventure games as well, including fallthrough. Beware the Grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: "Zachary Kline" Hi, Agreed. A friend of mine walked me through a brief session of Spore a while back. Best, Zack. - Original Message - From: "shaun everiss" that would be interesting to create your own universe, creatures, etc, from the user point of view. I have a friend that has just got spore. You are able to create life from components, and have a semi age of empires with it. work through the ages till you get to the space age, and then colonise other worlds, etc. He showed me part of it it is sertainly interesting. [Audyssey] Sound RTS
Hey list. I just downloaded Sound RTS yesterday, and boy is it cool. I've got the hang of the mechanics, now I have to get the strategy. I think what my best option will be is something like this: --First, start off by recruiting peasants and mining gold. I like to get some gold first, as wood is easier and takes less time. --Build a farm to accommodate the new soldiers I will soon have. --If I get lucky, build a sawmill where the woods are, taking even less time for wood production. --Build a barracks. --Begin recruiting archers, all the while still exploiting gold and chopping wood. --Build up a strike force of 6-7 archers. --Upgrade town hall to keep. --Build one, possibly two, more farms. --Immediately begin work on stable once Keep is complete. --Recruit a force of five knights. --Finally, begin recruiting footman--my number is ten. --Once your force has been mustered, then it can be time to think about acquiring upgrades and getting some of the more powerful units (like dragons.) The reason I recruit archers and knights first is that I want to have a strong and easy way to make sure the enemy doesn't come near my territory. Often, the passive computer will enter my territory with knights. Now, in my experience, it's best to have your own knights, as well as some footmen or archers to hold them off so they can be slaughtered. Once my entire force is complete, I can go after the enemy in full. What do you guys think of such a strategy? [Audyssey] Possibility of an RPG
Dear List, I'd like to know if any of you would be interested in this. I found a free table-top RPG online called Abeo, which looks quite amazingly good. I am thinking of starting a group to play in this RP, possibly using Audio Tips or Skype if its convenient. This games is quite complex and it will take a lot of commitment. Let me give you an excerpt from the introduction. E-mail me onlist or off, doesn't matter, if you're interested. Hopefully we can make something cool out of this. Introduction The World of Fear and Wonder The lever, the winch and the wheel are not the beginning and the end of the mechanisms of creation; they are only the simplest solution. Society, industry and interaction are poorly suited to deal with a world where cause and effect are not laws, but suggestions. In Abeo, this stranger, more fluid world is the truer one. There are no rules when the dreams we have with our eyes closed are just as real as the ones we share with them open. We are encouraged to forget the fey lands of our most private hopes and fears, paying attention instead to the monsters that lurk in alleyways, crackhouses, congress and corporate boardrooms. There are rules for dealing with these horrors, and though we groan under their weight, we can bear their finite power. Unfortunately, there are monsters other than the mundane ones, and it doesn't take much to see them. Today, a woman was found gruesomely murdered in a room locked from the inside. Last week a man burst into flame in an enclosed office. There is no conspiracy to hide these facts from the average man on the street; he does enough of the job himself. Human torches and phantom murders just don't fit into the supremely defined cosmos of his belief. Belief in the absence of proof is faith. Belief in direct contradiction to proof is dangerous. In Abeo, you play one of those remarkable people who have taken a mad step, removing themselves from the danger of ignorance and placing themselves squarely in danger of knowing entirely too much. Reason defines the Phenomenal world, but emotion taps into the Noumenal world and breaks it. Love does indeed conquer all, but so does hate. And fear. Fervor does more than motivate, it directly affects the world, removing the veils of apathy and illusion; fueling the ghost in the machine of causality . The vehement see that the world operates by the rules of irony, poetry, and passion as much, if not more than it does by those of gravity, electromagnetism, and the nuclear forces. It is only through a lateral shift in perception that characters are able to do what they had previously thought impossible. One must become insane to become free; to walk on water, you have to jump out of your boat. Characters in Abeo find themselves shuttling between a banal but safe world defined by its objectivity and predictability, and a beautiful but deadly one bound only by Passion. Faced with both Phenomenal and Noumenal challenges continuously, these individuals often find themselves sliding into a particular kind of adaptive madness--a madness that simultaneously grants the character the power he needs to survive and drives him farther away from the relationships and identity that he spent his life forming. These characters are called Liminal in Abeo, and an endless number of other names within the world the game defines. Those few who know enough to call them anything may understand them to be sorcerers, angels, monsters, demons or simply family members slipping away, bit by impossible bit. What is wrong with this whole thing is that Thomas poured two years of his life into this. He has completely burned himself out and is getting literally no compensation for this. He has no motivation and no desire to continue. You've been pretty reasonable about this, but you haven't addressed that issue, which is really the primary concern. Re: [Audyssey] My final message about 3D games and side-scrollers.
tom, I've been looking at this thread silently. All I can say is that I am totally with you on this "as Guys, I think this whole community should be collectively ashamed of itself. To draw an analogy: I'm writing a book right now. That book is something I'm going to be invested in for the long term because I WANT TO WRITE IT. But I haven't told very many people about it or set myself a deadline yet because I don't want to be burned out by stress. Now, programming a game I would imagine is exponentially more difficult. I just can't believe you guys are so relentlessly hounding him on this. Yes, those opposing his original decision made clear, grammatical arguments and there is something to be said for that. But really, I feel pretty bad myself not even having said anything or paid for the game. Personally Tom, I like side-crollers; 3-D has never been my forte. But hot darn, I was pretty excited about your original decision. But now, it looks like we may never get to see that. You are perhaps the most open honest game developer I've ever seen. I don't think your original decision marred your integrity one bit. If I had paid for the game, I would've been completely over on your side. I might buy the side-croller when and if it comes out, when and if I can scrape up some cash. I just have to tell you my friend, keep doing what you love. Because you do it well. Kelby Doomed Dragon It is quite easy for me to think of a God of love mainly because I grew up in a family where love was central and where lovely relationships were ever present. Here's what I'M thinking the "book" would look like. (The problem I see with having all the Audyssey issues lumped together is simply that there's a lot of extraneous stuff in there. This book would be for the public and an introduction for others interested in the subject.) --The book would be divided into sections chronologically ordered. Such as: The first section would be "Precursors: Accessible Gaming Before 1996". The second would be "Beginnings: The Birth of Audyssey and The Genesis of Gaming for the Blind, 1996-1997". The third (possibly), "Blazing The First Steps of the Trail: Accessible Gaming Rises Up, 1998-1999". The fourth: "Interactive Sound: Bavisoft and the Growth of the Modern Accessible Game, 2000") --Historical articles would be first. --NEXT would follow articles of a theoretical or programming nature. --Third would be two noted games that are significant preferably still being played today in some sort of way. --And last in each section would be profiles, background information, and interviews with significant people of that year of accessible gaming. Kelby Doomed Dragon "Tidings of death have many wings." --J. R. R. Tolkien "For Venus smiles not in a house of tears." --William Shakespeare "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. [Audyssey] An Idea for a Project
Dear List, This is only an idea, but I'd really like input on this as it might end up involving the whole community's efforts. I am thinking how cool it would be if the community began an online "book" that would basically span the history of accessible games. It would mostly be a compilation effort (probably from Audyssey), and would include history, theory, profiles of significant developers, and reviews of big games. People could obviously write stuff for it that would be included. I even thought of a title. "The Sound of the Screen: The Past, Present, and Future of Accessible Gaming," penned by the Audyssey Community. What do you guys think of this? Maybe something we could all work on over the summer? Re: [Audyssey] STFC 2 was LW sound packs?
I'd definitely like to see STFC 2 be along something of those lines. Sounds very enjoyable if you ask me. I'm bad at turn-based strategy, but would probably be able to get the hang of this easier. Dear List, I have just downloaded Tarzan Junior. My question is, is there a way to register it? Or am I simply stuck with the demo? Kelby Doomed Dragon "You're asking if we have a problem? Re: [Audyssey] Announcement of a List--Blind Teen Talk
Raul, I have to apologize. You're absolutely right. I sent this just after I woke up because I wanted to get some publicity about the list. I addressed it to a few different places--I definitely shd've put an OT in front of it at the very least. Rest assured, it won't happen again. [Audyssey] Announcement of a List--Blind Teen Talk
Dear List, A new mailing list has been created which I think may be of interest to some of you. It is called Blind Teen Talk. It's just a place where blind and visually impaired teens from all around the world can come and chat about anything they like. To access the group, just go to http://groups.google.com/group/blind-teen-talk. Subscribe, and talk about anything that strikes your fancy. (No cursing, harassment, or sexual content allowed--this will get you banned without warning.) Kelby Doomed Dragon "The Earth has warmed about 1 degree fahrenheit in the last century. Re: [Audyssey] A Game Idea
I tend not to enjoy games like Elder Ages. You get the same thing, over and over and over and over and over. The thing about Pokemon is the strategy of pitting monster against monster. Elder Ages has none of that. Heck, I'd be happy with a Pokemon text game if it emulated the strategy well enough. Kelby Doomed Dragon Q: What is the sound of one hand clapping? Re: [Audyssey] A Game Idea
Hmm. You do have a point there. The other idea I had was a game based on the Pokemon games. (Again--hate the show, love the concept.) Maybe something along the lines of NetBattle for the sighted. See, here's what you would do. You pick a six Pokemon team, and battle the computer or others. (The exploration part of Pokemon always annoyed me--it's the battles I find fun.) If you wanted to make it easier on yourselves, you could restrict it to the original 151/251 if you wanted, since there are now something like 500. [Audyssey] A Game Idea
Dear List, A game idea just hit on me. This, in concept, doesn't sound like it would be that hard to program. The idea is a Yu-Gi-Oh card duelling game. I've never been a fan of the show, but I like the card game. You wouldn't even need voice-actors--SAPI or JAWS could do all the work. (Incidentally, this project sounds something like perhaps Lighttech could be interested in.) Let me know what you think. Re: [Audyssey] USA Raceway trailer released.
The trailer, on a whole, sounds pretty cool. But my gosh, the music was just ...' just ... just so inane. It sounded like I was driving down a country lane, not racing on a track. Other than that, though, it sounds fantastic. Kelby Doomed Dragon Q: What is the sound of one hand clapping? A: It is the universe exploding. "It is not what we see that determines who we are. Re: [Audyssey] Attention Moderators and entire list!!!
Sorry? You know, I'm sorry too. I don't think a simple three-word sentence is going to cover it. This past summer, we've had something like four of these instances. I am tired of it. Maybe you guys can understand why I don't post to this list. I am seriously considering leaving; I get enough e-mail as it is already. If you're really sorry, then you're going to at least have to earn my trust back. I can't say anything for the rest of you, bI think people who cause such riotous disputes need to be reprimanded. This message is for Thomas Ward, mainly, but I didn't know his e-mail address, and thought you guys might have some info about the relevant subject. Oh, btw my name's Kelby Carlson. I'm a very recent subscriber to this list. Now, to what I was going to ask: Thomas, I read the interview with you in Audyssey, and had this question: are the games Battle Masters and Dark Ws naturally accessible, or must purchase them from a special (blind friendly) store? Also, assuming the first question is ansered yes, where might I be able to purchase these games? Anyone knows anything about this, please reply.
