Hi. Actually, I like termite torpedo. It actually takes some intelligence and strategy to play that game. And the voiceovers for it are fantastic. I'd venture to say that it has the best recorded voiceover of any game I have ever played, audio or not. On 1/23/2011 12:48 AM, shaun everiss wrote: I wouldn't touch them. Re: [Audyssey] Games from APH?
Also, after trying on three different machines, I've never! got the damn things to work, that's one reason why armadillo army has no written description in the database, though I'm tempted to just put something together from the instructions, bad as that sounds (usually I always try to play a game before describing it). Eitherway, apparently they wrote ridiculously symple audio games, slapped a price on them, and called them a revolutionary new product considdering they were the first audio games ever created, despite the fact that a bit of googling would've shown them different. Oh, and the method they apparently use for showing audio directions is just insane! According to someone who described the games on audiogames.net, instead of hereing something in sterrio pan, you here a voice pout of center speakers saying "right right right" or "left left left" depending upon where the enemy or object is, which is just ridiculous! Re: [Audyssey] games with unlabelled buttons
Sinse I can't read in game text but can sometimes see enough graphics to play something like Mega man, I've used this tactic in mainstream games for years. In fact when I bought the Mega man aniversary collection, it almost became a bit of a family joke, me asking my mum to read the level select so that I could remember it ;D. The one thing I will say is that obviously the rest of the game needs to be playable anyway, and also the button structure needs to remain the same and not randomized. there is no good finding one of 100 items at random with unlabled selection choices and no way of identifying them. This is why though I've been able to play Mega man zero games which have about 70 items each (mostly by using heavily anotated faqs), I've never managed any of the later castlevania series, sinse there are just too many items, all of which are obtainable at random, and none of which I could identify once I picked it up. Oh, and obviously the game itself would have to be pretty playable anyway of course. Beware the grue! [Audyssey] games with unlabelled buttons
Think about this: You have a digital TV at home. A remote control box operates it. Are the buttons labeled in braille? Does the remote speak when you press a button? Now, you are totally blind and nobody else is at home. You want to watch channel 32 and don't know what channel the TV is tuned to. What do you do? You cannot see the TV screen to see what channel is tuned to. Now, you have an I-Phone and want to play a game that isn't very complex. Can you do it, even though the buttons aren't labeled? Probably not the first time you try, so what's your next step? Maybe you could get a sighted person to tell you which buttons do what when pressed, and memorize them for future use. Maybe you could just press them and see what they do. I would prefer the first approach, but it isn't always available. If you know other totally blind people who do play the game successfully, you could ask them how they do it. This, too, is a good approach. By the way, were you able to change your TV to the channel you wanted to watch? Remember, those buttons probably are not labeled. --- Laughter is the best medicine, so look around, find a dose and take it to heart. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. I also find that automated tools and web editors etc put in an awful lot of unnecessary coding, that just gets in the way. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: 29 December 2010 23:19 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] games I'd like to play Hi Mauricio, Agreed. Back when I was in college when I took html the instructer had us use Windows Notepad to code our html pages by hand. The main reason for using a simple text editor like Notepad instead of something like Dream Weaver was so that we could get a firm understanding of html. Plus without having to depend on an automated tool like Dream Weaver we actually had to think about how we wanted to design our pages, think about the types of html tags we wanted to use, and that allowed us to be more creative and customize our pages. Automated wizards like Dream Weaver are nice and handy, but in the long run all you are really doing is borrowing someone elses automated code without any origionality or personalization. When it comes to BGT the same principle applys. A script wizard is nothing more than a bunch of automated code that might help speed up development, but you aren't actually learning how to do it yourself. You are depending on that wizard to do the majority of the work for you. If a person really wants automated code the best thing might be to write up some commonly used code and store it in a text file for later use. If they want to use it simply copy it into their new game, modify it, and are on their way. Re: [Audyssey] games I'd like to play
Hi Lori, Oh, I copy and paste code all the time. As I explained I have written my own templates for the G3D engine containing common code like menus, common status messages, etc and copy and paste it into a new project all the time. There is nothing wrong with that. The difference in what I'm doing is I actually wrote those templates and know exactly how the code works so it is easy to modify and update as needed where an automated template wizard like some people are asking for may not be well suited for your project. It might have things you don't want or need, or lack something you whish it added. Writing your own templates that can be copy and pasted into the project is customized to provide you some automated functionality while being tailored specifically for you personally. Hi, Of course it is. It is just that most books never tell you that up front. Fortunately, I have read some good books on Visual Basic .NET that actually discusses the mechanics of creating a window by hand rather than pointing and clicking your way into glory. I'm actually glad I did as even though it is more time consuming it is more accessible than trying to get Jaws, Window-Eyes, NVDA, whatever to drag and drop buttons, labels, etc around on the form. I'll just manually code them into my project and forget it. Smile. On 12/29/10, Hayden Presley wrote: > Hi, > Is it actually possible to create the entire window via VB code? Re: [Audyssey] games I'd like to play
Hi, That also gives me another thought. Yeah, even assuming such an automated feature did exist how on earth would someone automate everything anyway. Part of writing games is to get creative, creat new worlds, new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. Grin. If you are creating a Jedi Knight game and your template for a player class doesn't have force powers like heal, blind, lightning, whatever you are going to have to add it. If you don't know what the code does there is no way you are going to add it. Philip can't realistically think of a template wizard for everything. As for the "Dreamweaver users" I know exactly what you mean. I can't tell you how many times I've read web pages written in Front Page, Dreamweaver, etc and the html is so messy and sloppily written I feel like telling the owner just to delete it and start over from scratch.Especially, when the editor like Front Page uses a lot of non-standard tags for I.E. and don't work with Safari or Firefox. Like "hello, stupid! Not everyone uses Internet Explorer." That's exactly the kind of crap a person has to put up with when dealing with automated wizards. Hi, Is it actually possible to create the entire window via VB code? If so, I was not aware of that. You can't always depend on some sort of wizard, script helper, or a list of formulas because programming software just does not work that way. There is a lot more to a program than code. There is the issue of programming theory, experience, and logic involved in putting any kind of program together. For example, let's say you want a very basic artificial intelligence system for your game using fuzzy logic. So you click on some wizard that creates a very basic template using some sample fuzzy logic code. Now, if you don't know both the theory and techniques for fuzzy logic how are you going to modify that code to suit your particular game? Well, the truth of the matter is you can't. You'll have to go out and spend some time and money on reading a book or two on both the theory and techniques for fuzzy logic before you will understand the sample code. Just handing the code to you isn't going to explain to you how it works and how it should be properly modified to meet your needs. That is imho the problem with automated systems. They still assume you know and understand what you are doing in the first place and that you have enough skill to actually modify the templates to fulfill your needs. The same goes for math formulas. A formula is just a method for figuring out some unknown value or values. You still have to know how the formula works. Otherwise if you don't you might unintentionally use it incorrectly causing runtime errors in your code. So just handing you a list of formulas isn't necessarily the answer you want. Knowing how to actually work the formulas firsthand will go along way to programming error free code. To quote an old favorite "there is no such thing as a free lunch." Programming is like that too. Nothing worth while is free or automated. Having a firm understanding of how the code works is your best chance at writing stable code. Not knowing how the code works will lead you into errors, problems, and misery. So staying away from automated systems until you know the language well is a good idea. To give you an example of what I mean Microsoft Visual Basic .NET has a number of automated wizards, templates, that allows a developer to create a project rapidly. So let's assume i open VB .NET click on a Form wizard and create a simple dialog box. I use the form editor to set the size of the window, to set the window title, etc. Then, I open up the toolbox and drag a label to the center of the screen and add "Hello World!" to the caption. Finally, I drag and drop a button from the toolbox, name it Close, and then press f7 to open the editor. In the close button clicked event I add Close() to the event. I save my code and compile the project. Voila, At this point I have created a very basic Windows application, but what have I learned about the Visual Basic language itself? Truthfully, I haven't learned a thing. I let Visual Basic .NET do all the work of creating the dialog box, creating the lable, and even the Close button. The only code I added was the Close() method to close the app. Otherwise the IDE did everything for me. If I just want to save time automated wizards like that can be a great time saver, but if I am a student trying to actually learn how a VB .NET form works or how to create my own Windows forms manually I haven't learned a thing. I still wouldn't know anything more than when I started. That's precisely why I would be against any kind of script helper, script wizard, etc because you have to know how this stuff works to really use it effectively anyway. i am personally against the scripting manager idea, simply because this way you will never learn to program. it is like people that say, oh yes, i can web design really really really well, i only need dreamweaver... they are always dependent on an automatic interface. why? because they never went through learning the hard, and really artistic part of things. I kind of imagine a room with things in it like this but I could be wrong. Say I have a 25 by 25 grid. x can go from -25 to +25 and y from -25 to +25. so this means I could have an object say something laying on the ground at position x4 and y -3. another at x-5 and y +6. and so on. maybe this makes no sense. But when I took high school algebra in order to make graphs I had a board with a bunch of pegs on it. So to put something at x+3 and y-5 I'd go over 3 spaces to the right of x0 y0 and down 5 spaces from the 0 y axis. So is that kind of how positioning objects in games works? except there is no physical graph paper or board you just have to imagine the board in your head and define the grid using the bgt code? Maybe the math isn't the problem here. maybe what is needed in bgt to make it more useable is a file containing formulas. Also I don't think that people are meaning to make bgt simple like audio game maker that would be counter-productive. But why not make bgt kind of like the jaws scripting manager. In the jaws script manager if you forget a command you can bring up a list view of all possible commands and hit enter to insert that one into your script. So why not a bgt script manager. but it would be a notepad-like editor and you could easily pull up lists of commands and even type to filter down to just what you are looking for. Also the bgt script manager could let you open save and debug your bgt code. need math formulas? pull up a quick list of common formulas and hit enter to insert the basic code into the bgt script or game. Ok lets say you want to create thomas's room. in the bgt script editor you could open the basic template for a room paste it into your existing game then just change its parameters to your heart's content. Also the jaws script manager has lists of functions. how about if bgt script editor can quickly let you make timers and stuff, at least the basics then you can use the editor to modify them to your own parameters. think of it as a scripting assistant. Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: bomber man
Hi Hayden, Just that. Some Linux developer has created a version of Bomber Man for Linux. It is listed in the Ubuntu Software Center, under the free games section, simply as Bomber Man. If I'm not mistaken it was written in c and uses SDL for sound, video, and input. It is not quite like the original, but is close enough. In fact, my wife and I have it right here on our gaming computer we have in the living room. A while back when my wife and I decided to go Linux we took the family computer that was an old Windows XP system from 2003 or 2004 and installed Ubuntu Linux 10 on it. We then installed several Linux game emulaters on it like Dosbox, Stella, SNes 9x, Frotz, and scare which allows us to play all kinds of older games on that one computer. We can play all the Atari classics like Asteroids, Centipede, Packman as well as various Super NES roms like Super Castlevania. Not to mention a number of Linux specific retro remakes like Super Tux, Circus Linux, Pengwuine Command, that are basically remakes of Super Mario, Circus Atari, Missile Command, with a Linux theme. So as a result we have a Bomber Man rom we can play through emulation, plus there is a free clone of Bomber Man for Linux as well. Anyway, while I would certainly think it would be cool to have an accessible Bomber Man clone for the blind it wouldn't be that easy to translate into audio. The way the screen is laid out you have a ggrid in what could be called a top down view. A sighted person can see the entire screen at once and get an idea of what is happening everywhere at once. With an audio only game the audio is related to you, the listener, therefore presenting a first-person perspective rather than an outside observer. If that makes any sense to you. To give you a better idea of what I am talking about let's take Packman. In the video arcade game version you can see it from a top down perspective where you see the entire maze and everything in it as though you were looking down at the entire thing from up above. With Phil's Packman Talks you can only hear sounds in relation to you depending on where you are at in the maze. you can't see all the dots, ghosts, and Packman himself all at once. You only hear the ghosts nearest to you as well as the power pills tunnels etc. Bomber Man would have this same problem. With Bomber Man sometimes you need to be aware of things happening on screen in a different part of the grid than where you are. It would be difficult if not frustrating to convey all this information to someone who can't see it. Especially, if you are only listening to sounds in the immediate area where you, the player character, are located in the grid at any certain place or time. As far as power ups and such I certainly don't remember any pies. I remember collecting bombs, flames, and that sort of thing, but no pies. Are you certain it was pies? Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: bomber man
Bomberman is actually one of those games it'd be pretty difficult to replicate in an audio form, or at least I can't think of a way to do it. The playing area is a grid, ie, you can only move in four directions up down, left and right. each bomb you place on the grid explodes in a cross, and can kill you as well as monsters or other players, and blow up bricks. Sinse however you really need the top down view to get these relations, until tactile desplays are invented I'm unsure how this could work in audio. Btw, I'm afraid I have no idea what you mean by pies or amulets. Poers ups included bombs, which could give you extra bombs, flame to increase your bomb's radius, skates which made your character walk faster, a kicking boot and punching glove to chuck your bombs around with and some special one offs, no pies, though there was an icecream come which gave you an extra life. Re: [Audyssey] games playable under the linux
Hi Petr, No problem. Glad I could be of some help. As it happens the topic of Linux gaming is a subject I am very personally interested in myself since I primarily use Linux for day to day computer work/play. I don't venture into Windows except when I really have to to write some Windows specific piece of software or to play an accessible game that I like. As a result I've made it my personal quest to find and create accessible games for Linux. As it so happens there are definitely games out there we can play. Unfortunately, many VI gamers would see it as taking a big step backwards because text adventures and muds make up the large majority of accessible games on Linux right now. There are also the odd console game like Hangman that are accessible to if you have the BSD games package installed. However, with APIs like SFML 1.6, which has bindings to OpenGL and OpenAL, it is certainly possible to create games equal to Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, Sarah, and all the other great accessible games for Windows. That's why when I get an opertunity to I have plans to use SFML for my Open G3D engine for Linux. I think Linux has gotten to the point where the game APIs are certainly equal to Windows and a developer could quite easily begin producing high-quality accessible games for Linux using C, C++, or Python. Hi Thomas, i was hoping that specially you will answer my question, so thanks very much for your answers and all the information you gave to me. Re: [Audyssey] games not working
Hi Thomas, Thank you very much for letting me know that many of the sapi5 voices do work with my games in Windows 7 and that it only seems to be a problem with the ScanSoft voices and that might even just be on your computer. It is good to hear that the sapi5 voices do still work ok. BTW A gentleman told me that he does not like Microsoft Anna and that it was ruining his gaming experience. He thus went out and bought a couple of the Cepstal voices and said that they only cost 30 dollars each. Guess that's not too bad for getting better voices than Anna. Hi Thomas, Considewring what you've had to go through in the last couple of years, I'd say Thomas's revenge would be a good one. Think of it: "Breaking news! Thomas ward, infuriated at the infinite requests for Mysteries of the Ancients that came in yesterday, has now gone berserk, and is out to obliterate the entire blind community. It is your job to see that this monster is put to rest once and for all, by first tracking him to his new super secret lare, defeating him in a sword duel (the one reserved for Athena) then completing the sourceCode for MOTA." The hardest part would be completing your sourcecode, considering I barely know an ounce of C ++, I can about imagein what that would turn out to be. smile Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:52 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Games released the past week and a question Hi Hayden, I don't know either. Re: [Audyssey] games not working
Hi Jim, No, I just used the standard yes/no prompt until Crystal came up and asked me if I wanted to use that voice. It crashes only when it tries to use Scansoft Tom, Daniel, Karen, or some of the other Real Speak Solo voices that comes with Openbook 8 or Jaws 9. As I said those voices were true Sapi voices and should work, but aren't working for some reason. However, back when I was still using Vista I didn't have this issue. I'm suspecting the trouble isn't with your games but the Real Speak Solo voices themselves. They work alright with Window-Eyes and Text Aloud but not some of the games. I just tried them with Time of Conflict and got the same problem. I'm not sure if it is my install or some weird compatibility issue with those voices and Sapi 5.4. However, I thought you might like to know what voices I have tried and know work for certain with Windows 7 and your games. AT&T Crystal AT&T Mike AT&T Lorn Cepstral Callie Microsoft Anna These are currently the voices I have installed and I have tested with your games. I would assume since Cepstral Callie for Windows works that any of the Cepstral voices that also use the Swift 5.0 engine from Cepstral would equally work well with your games. Same goes for the AT&T voices that all use the same engine as Crystal and Mike. If Crystal and Mike work it goes without saying all the other voices should work too as they all use the same engine. I recently have purchased a couple of the Cereproc voices, but haven't tested them with your games yet. However, according to Cereproc they are suppose to be Windows 7 compatible so I would assume they are. If you need me to I have Cereproc Sarah and William to try with your games. Re: [Audyssey] games not working
Hi Thomas, Oh, it is sapi 5.4 with Windows 7. Didn't know that. Thanks. That is cool that you have gotten my games set to use AT&T Crystal. May I ask, did you do that by setting Crystal as your computer's default voice? And thanks for letting me know that the AT&T voices do work in Windows 7. TGIF and BFN - Original Message - Hi Jim, Actually, Windows 7 comes with Sapi 5.4. Sapi 5.4 is technically backward compatible with Sapi 5.1 as it is basically just a newer version of the Sapi 5 library. Anna, though, was specifically compiled using Sapi 5.3 or later so won't run on XP. As for the AT&T voices those work fine on Windows 7. In fact, I just got your games setup using AT&T Crystal. So I can say for certain those work. the only problem is the Scansoft voices. As for the Scansoft voices those are not locked to Window-eyes. these are the Real Speak Solo voices that ship with Openbook 8, and are standard Sapi 5 voices not the Real Speak Direct voices with Jaws 10 and later.I don't have the Real Speak Direct voices, because they don't work with Window-eyes at all. However, setting something like tom as the default voice and seeing if your games work with it should be worth a try. I know the voices work with Win-Eyes and some other apps but crashes your games. So I'll do more testing and let you know. Hi Thomas, Yeah, I don't know. I hear that Windows 7 comes with sapi 5.3 Anna and my games were developed for sapi 5.1. It is good that my games can use at least sapi 5.3 Anna. There might be a conflict when trying to switch from sapi 5.3 Anna to a sapi 5.1 voice. I don't know if sapi voices such as the AT&T voices might or might not work. It could be that sapi scansoft Tom is locked to Window Eyes like all of the sapi scansoft voices are now locked to Jaws and or other applications that they come with. Of course this is all just guess work on my part as I can use all twenty two sapi 5.1 voices on my Windows XP computers. I wonder what would happen if you go into the control panel and change your computer's default sapi voice. Re: [Audyssey] games not working
Hi Josh, I really don't know. Although, i should revise my statement somewhat. Jim's games work more less fine on Windows 7, the 32bit versions, but I have had a few issues such as crashing when selecting a different Sapi voice. If I use something like Microsoft Anna no problem. If I try and switch to Scansoft Tom, for example, the games will crash. However, I can use Scansoft Tom with Window-Eyes 7.2 without issue. So there is something slightly buggy with Jim's games andSapi voices under Win 7 in general. Otherwise if I use a voice like Scansoft Anna they don't really give me troubles. Still running XP in something like Vmware is really the only way to really and truly resolve the problem, because Jim designed his games for 95, 98, ME, and XP, and that's it. Anything else is on an "if you can make it work" basis. Re: [Audyssey] games and 64bit
Hi Josh, It is starting to look that way. At least in your case. I still don't know why it is failing to run under Windows 7 64bit as apparently some users have it working according to Jim's message he sent to the list earlier, and I have various games like NFL, Spanker, Baseball, setup and running under Windows 7. Although, I am having a problem with them locking up now and then. However, I don't have similar issues with say the GMA or PCS games though. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Funnily enough, I never use the numbpad switch at all, I find it quite a pest, I just swap Hal to the function key command set, then turn the keys off whenever I want to play a game. In fact the only game which really needs a numberpad and has no alternative whatsoever is monkey business. Beware the grue! well the dropping was a misjudging it dropped on the carpet. its not the worst story I have heard, a friend dropped his on a concrete floor, ok I admit my toshiba got mangled but it was ok. this guy's compaq disintergrated it went into little bits. smsh. I never saw it but I'm glad that was not mine. Desktop wise the latest 2 are ok, the one I had before that had a good life and is now dead though it was a bad boy requiring reformats. strangely though it was slow xp fixed it, so it didn't care about win98. maybe it wanted another os? This record is broken with the first windows box which came from a bankrupt company. we can see why. things kept failing. Reformats and more reformats. etc. OFcause we had time then even my dad had time. It was rebuilt with bits and bobs. however thats all gone now. I struggled to replace the main dvd drive on the main pc last year because of time to rebuild it. the system needed a major hard drive and dust clearout and I decided to use a dvd module I was not using at the time. it all worked but that was a struggle. we also couldn't leave it down for to long as it was one of the main systems at the time. As far as the coffee goes, well it wasn't one cup, it was more like half a cup, and a small cup from the thermos I used to take around school at that. I didn't actually drop it, more sort of knocked it while stationary. Sinse then I've always made certain to have laptops and coffee in separate places. Even when i'm on a train, i use the table in the next seat for coffee, or else hold the coffee in my hand while drinking it and not over my laptop. I will say though, that's the one great thing about wireless keyboards. I frequently now sit around with drinks or food while I'm using my computer, but only with the keyboard on my lap a long way away from anything else, besides in my experience pc keyboards are far less senstative than laptop ones. My wireless keyboard has actually been sat on a couple of times and is none the worse for ware, something I'd never even risk doing with a laptop ;D. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
well my main reason for the toshiba obsession if you will is 2 fold 1. the fact they don't break, unless they are mangled in some way. ok I admit the first one was dropped. the 3rd one had dead fans a dead headphone jack, a dead lid a dead modem at one stage and a dead dvd drive but thats about it. and it did not happen all at once. most of the issues came at its end life the other came at the beginning. This tecra has had its close calls but bar the keyboard and some stupid things to do with some recording software for a piece of semi broken hardware which I will not use anymore anyway its been ok. Every time it really breaks I almos go as far as calling someone to reformat but I usually fix it and then although bits don't work its like well its ok and I can do without most of this anyway. I like the fact the bios is accessable from the os though. even in the 1850 I could access it in dos as long as I had no 386 managers active. there was a brief period where in win9x time the manuals were not that accessible and before where I had no manual at all. But lately its all pdf which can be converted to text and its all ok. Support is mostly helpfull to and I havn't had any complaints. Now I wish toshiba made a desktop. I'd switch everyone over to that. Another thing I like about toshiba is its bios update, it will load the update disk say, then compair it with the bios currently loaded. In older units say the 1850 you had to boot to dos and run a program. with the newer units say the 310 and up you pushed a couple keys and it updated from a disk. lately you can only get the windows download but that does the same as the old versions. Also they do try to emulate the bios setup as closely to what appears in the os. firstly it was a program in dos then in win95-98 it was all a windows program now its a control panel. so I definately will stay with toshiba. They are also extremely quiet. At 01:07 p.m. 5/05/2010, you wrote: >Hi, >Yeah, I'm a fan of Toshiba myself. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Hi, Lol! That's for sure. I have never known anyone who likes to format as much as Shaun does. It is his personal obsession I think. Sometimes I'll do one once a year or so to make sure everything is in maximum working condition but that is backing up from images so generally that is a quick and easy process. Once I install the image I'll run any and all upgrades, make a new image, and go on. However, I think Shaun does it whenever and if ever he can just to do it. Poor computer. If I were it I'd die too from all the abuse. I managed to drop a laptop at the age of 15, but all that went was the keyboard which was pretty easily replaced, then At the age of 16, I had my first and only coffee related laptop incident, which I've been careful never to repeat. Ironically, according to the repair shot I took it to, only 8 k was deleted and once the innards had been dried it worked fine (I never actually discovered what had! in fact been deleted). Apart from worn out fans, i don't think I've ever had another laptop destruction, or at least not so far. Possibly Sean, your laptops are rebelling at being reformated so much ;D. Beware the Grue! Hi, Yeah, I'm a fan of Toshiba myself. Although, I haven't actually owned one I know plenty of people who do, have worked on them in the field, and they are ranked amung my favorite laptops. Actually tom, I can beat that. My old uni laptop, a toshiba was bought in 2000, and I used it up until 2006, and until i got my desktop in 2005, it was pretty much used for several hours every day. In fact the only thing that went on it was the fan (my dad actually started using it recently just to do basic word processing, though he's sinse bought a newer model and my old machine has been consigned to the dustbin of history). the most extreme though is my brother's Toshiba. He had his original machine stolen during a burglary in 1997, containing all the work for his A-levels. Dolphin physically built him one within 10 days (this was in the days when you couldn't install a program like supernova without assistance, so it was better done in the shop), and sent it out. he stopped using it as a main work machine in 2005, and sinse bought a smaller netbook as a basic note taker. however, my mum is stil! using that machine, complete with it's install of windows 95 as a word processer now, and it stil! works! Admittedly, sinse my brother used consoles for his gaming, i don't believe it saw quite as much use as mine as it was basically used for word processing and net brousing, --- but stil it must be a record. As you might gather, we all like toshiba as a make. I did once use an acer, but found it ridiculously buggy and prone to overheat, even though it was scarcely six months old. The only issue with toshibas I've noticed is to be careful with the batteries, and remember to keep running them down, even when unnecessary. i bought two new batteries for my toshiba last year, and I try to run them down to nothing even when I've got a power point handy. Their stil taking full chaarge, which is good. Admittedly that's only about 200 minutes per battery, not like the battery life on some more modern machines, but having two of them helps a lot. Hi dark, Yeah, I've found laptops to be pretty rugged in design. My first laptop I purchased in 1998 and I used it clear up until 2004 or so when it was just too out of date to be practical any more. My next laptop was an Averitech 6200 which I recently sold to my dad, and it still works decently, but he upgraded it and now it works as good as new. A bit old as far as laptops go, but is still mostly good enough for day to day use. My current laptop is a Compaq 800 series notebook which I purchased in 2008 and I figure it will last me for a few more years yet. It runs Windows 7 just fine, and does everything I want it to do. The dvd burner died a while back, but I sent it in, got it serviced, and now it is as good as new. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Hi Tom. Well bare in mind that I grew up carting laptops around in the days when it wasn't uncommon for a machine to have a floppy drive and cd drive as well, a full sized keyboard and a 15 inch screen, so my deffinitions of "slim line" are rather different to other peoples ;D. I'm currently using a toshiba I got in 2005. I'km not quite sure on ram etc, but I've yet to find an application it won't run, and though it doesn't have a dvd burner, it does have a very passable rewrite cd drive. In fact the only thing about it I find a pain is that it only has 32 gb of storage space, which practically means I can't keep my entire music and audio library on it, though i have got copies of all audio games. I did look at net books for interests' sake as much as anything, and because as far as past experience goes the operational life of a laptop I've found tends to be roughly 7 years, and I am taking my laptop around to various places, up and down the country on trains, to the Italian alps and even crusing down the Nile in egypt. I suspect whatever machine I buy next will simply be smaller, just by virtue of being smaller, but I have no intention of skimping on features. Indeed, probably the only feature I won't bother with is a screen, sinse I generally find below 21 inches is my limit for visible screen size, though of course I don't really need the screen for all that much anyway. Oh, and I hate! those mini keyboards with a pattion! I really don't think they were made with touch typing in mind, particularly not at the sort of speed I tend to type at. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Hi Dark, Exactly my point. I think far too often people mistake Netbooks for a type of inexpensive and slim line type of laptop which they are not. Oh, they are nice and handy if you are someone who needs to run standard day to day apps like Word, Excel, Quicken, Firefox, etc but beyond that you are pressing your luck. They have relatively small storage space, less memory, less CPU power, to say nothing of not coming with dvd burners, etc that comes with a real laptop computer. Netbooks really are nothing more and nothing less than a type of notetaker device. As for looking for a more slim line laptop, as you put it, I'm not really sure how feasable that is realistically. After all the difference between a laptop and a netbook computer can be quite different. For example, my laptop computer has a 3.6 GHZ processor, 2 GB of ram, a 160 GB hard drive, a 15 inch display, a dvd burner, etc. It is powerful enough to run about any program/application I want to run as well as do things like watch dvd movies which you can't do at all on a netbook. I know that some laptops have a home theater type feel to them so they come with 17 inch and even 19 inch displays for better visibility for people who like using their computer for watching movies or who want to play video games on their laptop. Obviously, having such a large display naturally makes the laptop unit much bigger and heavier to carry around. Netbooks on the other hand are not designed for video games and watching movies so can afford to get away with a much smaller screen, not have a full sized keyboard, not include a dvd player, etc. If you want small you can have it, but you also have to do without all of the bells and wistles so to speak. That is essentially what put me off getting one myself, the lack of ability to do things with it. I think I'll probably just wait until my laptop explodes, by which time there should be powerful enough slim line laptops which will fulfill the need very well. Beware the grue! Keep in mind they are only designed to be notetakers with wireless web access so can't handle a lot of applications that require heavy system resources. Some of our games run fine on them, but anything too resource intensive won't run well at all no matter how much ram you slap into it.
