Hi Lisa,

Yes Ma'am I actually do have sounds of the screams etc for an
amuzement park type game. And I live fairly close to the park that
has been named roller coaster park of the world for several years in a row now.

The last I heard, Ken Downey lives right in Sandusky Ohio, the home

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-06 Thread dark
I'm not sure jim, sinse on the one hand it is realistic, though as you said
on the other it can alter the fairness of the game.

One thing perhaps that might help would be actually having the player told
when bad conditions on the course got in the way of their swing rather like
with the messages in baseball that tell you where the balls went (I know
commentary in golf matches isn't normal, but hay).

Something like "from the bad lie on this shot the ball only traveled x
amount of yards towards the green" or "the wind got in the way of that one
so it only went x yards" or "it hits some hilly ground and bounces traveling
x amount of yards", or "long grass stops the ball from rolling so it only
goes x yards"

obviously you wouldn't want that every single shot, but say when the
randomization got to a particularly large point of interference, you get one
of those messages to explain what went wrong.

this could also add some extra variety to the game and environments.
Obviously in real golf the condition of the ground and weather have an
affect upon where the ball goes as well as the swing, and sinse the
randomization is included to simulate this, - why not describe it?

Hi Dark,

Yes, thank you, I am glad that you appreciate the added skill level that I
added to the golf game by adding the pressing a key for the amount of
power. It does bug me a bit that even if one presses the key perfectly,
there is still that bit of randomization built into the game. I seriously
am not sure if it would be good if I could take that out since I added the

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-06 Thread dark

Hi jim.

Interesting, though I'd stil be concerned that the shot would basically fall
down to that randomization factor sinse all percentages could just be worked
out.

For example, say you were 90 yards from the green.

the pitching wedge has a max distance of 120 yards, thus to get a precise
shot you'd just need to go 75 percent.

Yes, there is variation, but sinse you could always! be sure to go that 75
percent, the variation would make the difference thus making the a lot of
shots an exercize in chance more than skill.

With the sound files though, not only do you need to select the right club
and calculate the percentage, but then have precise enough timing to hit
that percentage with the file.

This is actually a brilliant example of what I was talking about, sinse
calculating the position on those sound files, as well as knowing what the
right position is requires far more than just fast reactions, it also
requires judgement and calculation.

this is probably why the golf game has been so popular.

Hi Dark,

In the original golf game, the amount of power that you could type in was
from 1 to 99 percent of power. But the thing is, there is a bit of
randomization built into the game. You know like You are 42 yards from
the green and 18 yards off line. The off line is most of the
randomization, but even the total yards that the shot travels varies
because of the off line thing. And of course you had to learn how far
that percent of power would drive your shot with each club. But as you
surmised, even with that, it still needs the bit of randomization, or the
game would be too easy.

Hi Dark,

That's cool. The only version of Oregon Trail that I have played was a GW
Basic version. Seems though that it is a very stripped down version. I
was told that it is nothing like the original Apple 2e version.

Yes, the original GW Basic version of the golf game had only 3 courses to
play. I added 3 and saw that the courses themselves only took a few
numbers and descriptions to define them, so I then made the golf course
maker program so that others could also make courses for the game. The
original golf game was pure text with no sounds. And you typed in the
amount of power to hit for your shot. So I added all of the sounds
including the power indicator sound thing. However the original did have
some ASCII graphics that were pretty cool. I stripped those out though as
they would some times try to be spoken by a screen reader. The trucker
game was also pure text with no sounds at all.

I would love to make a Roller Coaster Tycoon type sim, but I am not sure
that it wouldn't be over my head to try something like that. I really
have never programmed a sim. Maybe I should start out trying a simple one
and see how that goes.

Hi Lisa,

HNot sure about that. I haven't used a notetaker in so long
I'm not sure what is and isn't compatible with something like a
Voicenote or Braillenote. I think those notetakers use a modified
version of Windows CE, and if so there is probably an accessible frotz
interpreter floating around somewhere.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-05 Thread dark

Hi jim.

I can't imagine writing in the power needed for golf, wouldn't that make the
hole game far too easy? for instance on a 279 yard hole pulling out your
three wood and typing 279 and just getting a hole in one, rather than having
to judge the sound file?
As to sims, well in a way I think you've already coded a good few of the
basic elements. Starmule for instance involves making decisions with a
prophit vs loss catagory over time, and trucker involves a number of factors
that change over time with you deciding what needs doing.

A basic sim just needs a number of resources to manage, projects that
require those resources which must be completed either as goals in
themselves or to generate more resources, and random effects that may occur
to alter either the resources or the completion of projects.

For instance, one dos game I read a review of recently had you piloting a
spaceship to neptune. Every tick your ship used fuel and battery power. You
could generate more battery power by burning fuel, and could refuel at a
number of stop off points along the way.

Each turn you decided on your speed and your course, sinse different courses
required different amounts of fuel and batteries and could propell you
different distances.

However you also had various desasters and failures that would affect your
ship, taking either fuel, distance or time to fix, or negating some of the
course correction options, though these could be fixed by picking up spare
parts at the few way stations.

Yes, this is! a litle like trucker, but with more factors to manage and far
fewer stops.

A spacial map is also sometimes used to add puzle type space elements into
the mix, for instance where to build roads in a sim city type game but this
isn't completely necessary, especially when there are a lot of factors in
the game.

A game with that sort of play style, managing a number of factors over time
in the face of randomness and limited risk, something like trucker but with
more complexity would be a good one I think.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

No, the original, if you are referring to the one written by Krother, which
I think you are, was just called "Adventure". Although to compare Momburg's

today; they're based off of each other, in a round-about way, but there
quite a bit of difference.

Hi Tom.

while I'm not really a fan of adult games this is exactly what I meant.

This is one of the things that entombed does well, all the weapons, the
groups of monsters you fight and the quests you get are randomized.

i'm only sorry the game doesn't have random environmental affects and
descriptions to go with these, - though this has certainly been an idea
floated around on the entombed list and hopefully something jasan would

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-04 Thread dark

Realistic and random aren't necessarily the same thing there ron.

For instance, in reality! if you were exploring an underground dungeon you'd
do far more walking around finding nothing at all than batling monsters,
finding treasure etc, simply because even if we imagine a world with
monsters and treasure filled dungeons, they wouldn't occupy all that! much
space.

Look at moria in lotr, nearly four days of walking with only a couple of
fairly miner jumpable cracks, no wandering monsters, only one ancient scroll
and wrelick side and all the enemies are at the end with the one big boss!
:D.

Good in a book, but not necessarily in a game.

Beware the grue!

Hi Dark,

Yes, adding several different random events can be fun. I recently was
testing out my speech module for the Genesis Engine, using SAPI 5
support, and I wrote a simple adult interactive fiction game. The
reason I chose to use my engine instead of a dedicated I.F. language
is I wanted a greater degree of randomness in the game.

For example, you might be eating dinner with the female character and
you ask her what she would like to have. One time she might reply
white wine, another red wine, another something else. It makes it so
the game never quite gets boring because every time you play she'll
give different answers to questions.

Not only that she'll change her hair style from game to game, she'll
have on a different outfit, and so on. Its not a complex game yet, but
its kind of fun seeing how many variations of the same scene the game
can come up with from what color of lipstick she has on to
pornographic descriptions after you get her into bed.

Anyway, I don't intend to release the game to the general public, but
those concepts will be applied to my future games in the future. As
you said adding a lot of random events makes it so a game never quite
gets dull or tiring because there are so many variations and random
events that you won't explore them all in the first game and probably
not the second.

Cheers!

It's amazing though how much fun a few sets of random events that you must

for instance the torchlight gamebook on www.arborell.comm uses several
tables to create a completely randomized dungeon, rolling for the room,
environmental hazard such as trap, type of monster, and treasure.

Put these together and you've got a lot of different scenarios, even using
no programming and just what is possible with rolling D10 dice.

I've actually considdered trying something similar in dark grue myself.

Hi Lisa,

Smile. As Dark and others said the Zork games can be downloaded and
played in Winfrotz TTS on Windows. In fact, they are among my favorite
text adventures and I play them quite a bit on my Linux laptop using
frotz for Linux.Since they were written in ZCode you can pretty much
run Zork on anything with a Frotz interpreter such as Windows, Mac,
Linux, iPhone, whatever.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Smile. Given the number of people asking for it maybe I should take
some time off Tomb Hunter and write Oregon Trail. :D

Seriously, though I actually have the original source for the Apple II
version written in Apple Basic, and I have plans to convert it to
something more modern for the PC at some future date. The game itself
is not really that complicated. You start out in a store buying up a
wagon, extra wheels, shells, a gun, food, etc. Then, you hit the
trail. Most of it is just random stuff like your wheel broke between
town x and town y and you have to replace it, or you try to fort a
river and over turn your wagon losing your gear in the process. It
would probably take less than a month to crank out that game as its a
pretty straight forward text adventure.

Cheers!

Hi Jim,

Just for reference. Most of the text adventures like Oregon Trail,
Escape, and others were written in Apple Basic for the Apple iI-E. I'm
pretty rusty at Apple Basic, but I do remember writing some text
adventures for myself in the language when I was like 10 or so.

Hi all,

I actually have the original source code for Oregon Trail, and it is
on my list of games to port to Windows at some point. However, I'm so
heavily involved with my other games at the moment I haven't had time
to do it yet.

However, the original source code for Oregon Trail was written in
Apple Basic for the Apple II-E. As I was pretty good at Apple Basic in
the day it would be a sinch for me to convert it to Python, C++, or
any other language I wanted given enough time to do so.

Cheers!

Hello to my fellow gamers.
The one game that my brother and I both enjoyed playing in the days of
dos games was the adventure game huge cave.

Now this would be cool if we could
1. get it to work in windows.
2. bring it up to code for win 7 users and add sound effects.
Like what you'd find in the caves.
Water dripping and everything else you'd find in a cave.
also, another game comes to mind.
Would love to see a windows blind friendly with sound effect The Oregon

now I know there's some coders on this list.

The original Oregon Trail game was written for one of the first Mac

I guess allot of people did. But I do not have any way of converting
that code to code that I can use. Actually can not even read the code.

I have been asked many many times for that game, and have tried, but just
do not have access to the code.

I would love to add sounds etc to many of the old favorite games, but
without access to the code of the game, it would mean rewriting the game
from scratch and trying to code it as good as the original game was, like
I tried to do with Trucker and golf. Well I did actually have the
original code of trucker and golf and did just add sounds and later other

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-04 Thread dark

Hi jim.

Actually as a serious suggestion have you ever considdered making your own
origan trail type game anyway?

Afterall we've not seen homer simpson in the wild west yet :D.

Seriously, the amount of times I've heard the gaem mentioned on list has
been amazing, meaning lots of people would like that sort of game.

Even if not based on the original code, you've at least played the original,
pluss you've created enough games like Trucker and Starmule, not to mention
monopoly trading that seem to use similar rules.

I'm fairly confident you could create a pretty awsome game of that type,
which would seem to be good both for the people that miss the original, and
for people like me who've never played it.

Yes, I know your probably working on something else currently and I
deffinately wouldn't be expecting a game released next week, stil,
maybe you could considder putting it on the todo list, sinse it'd be
something I think lots of people would appreciate.

All will play zcode if games no trouble.

Btw, is huge cave the same as the colossal cave adventure? it's just the
port of colossal cave is in tads format as far as I remember.

i remember it very particularly sinse it was the first if game I eve played

Hi,
There is a Z-Code version of Huge Cave in the Interactive Fiction Archive.
If there is any such thing as an accessible Z-Code interpreter for Windows
nowadays, it's possible to run that game under Windows.

Hi ron.

is this huge game the game also known as the colossal cave adventure? ie,
the game where you went into a cave attempting to find various treasures and
controlled things through an interactive fiction style parza by typing
commands like get lamp, fight trol etc.

If so, there's actually already a windows port, - or at least a port in
the tads if language that can be played easily in windows, that's indeed
where I first played it myself.

computers. Sorry, I forget the name of that thing. I never had one, but
I guess allot of people did. But I do not have any way of converting that
code to code that I can use.

Water dripping and everything else you'd find in a cave.
also, another game comes to mind.
Would love to see a windows blind friendly with sound effect The Oregon
Trails game as well.

now I know there's some coders on this list.
So how about it?
Many Many Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-03 Thread Tobias Vinteus

Hi,
There is a Z-Code version of Huge Cave in the Interactive Fiction Archive.
If there is any such thing as an accessible Z-Code interpreter for Windows
nowadays, it's possible to run that game under Windows.

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-03 Thread Charles Rivard
Can Huge Cave work with a screen reader, in Windows, using an interpreter
such as Frotz or Frots (however it is spelled)? Seems like I used to play
it that way, but it's been so long ago, I'm not sure.

Re: [Audyssey] Any chance of making huge cave work with windows?

2012-01-03 Thread Tom Randall
Hi, while I am sure this could be done it would be a very big project because
you would basically be rewriting the whole thing in a new language be it some C
variant, python, java, bgt script etc. So the short answer is yes but it would
not be a trivial project by any means.

Game on.
