Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yes, I'm aware of all that. The thing is the initialization code only
needs to be done once for the controller. It doesn't matter how many
sticks, buttons, and other controls are on it as all of that will be
detected by your initialization of the device. Once it is initialized
all you have to do is use the correct code to acquire information
about the state of the left stick, right stick, POV hat, buttons, etc
while it is in use. In other words you don't have to have two separate
initializations just because there are two sticks on the controller.
You only need one initialization that allows you to gather input from
any button or stick on the device.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

POV stands for point of view. In mainstream games it is often possible
to change the point of view or the perspective of where the game
character is looking by using the POV hat on the controller to look
around at the game world without moving the character.

Typically the POV hat is a round shaped control on the gamepad located
at the top left corner of the unit. You press it up or down to look
up/down or press it left or right to look left/right. There is usually
a button nearby to have it toggle between point of view and movement
controls for the game character so you can use it as a type of
alternative joystick as well as looking around.

Since audio games don't usually have look commands I doubt many will
employ this control much, but it is useful in mainstream games and
could easily be adapted to audio. In fact, I am planning on doing just
that once I get around to launching my full 3d audio games.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

I see. Unfortunately, I'm not finding a copy of my review, but the
controller isn't that complicated. The controller actually has a
fairly typical gamepad layout. Although, that probably doesn't help
seeing as you are a newbie to game controllers.

In any case I'll see what I can come up with. No promises, but at
worse I'll try and recreate the review. Problem is I don't have
sighted assistance around so I don't quite remember which buttons are
labeled A, B, C, D, etc. In any case that usually doesn't matter
because in games such as my own I have a profiler to map whatever
action I want to the button and no longer recall what it is labeled.
That's hardly a good thing for a technical review. Still I suppose I
can find someone to remind me of what buttons are labeled what.
Though, it might take a few days.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-13 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

Besides all of the things that Thomas said, the biggest problem that I have is
that the code that I found only finds the left stick. I just could not figure
out how to get it to find two sticks. So it finds ten buttons and one stick.
Now with the Logitech MOMO Racing steering wheel the steering wheel is the left
and right of the stick and the gas and brake peddle is the up and down of the
stick. A person can use one stick with the game, but it just isn't very
intuitive or fun to steer with the one stick left and right and at the same
time with the same stick do the gas and brake peddle.

BTW My Saitek ST290 Pro joystick has a large triangular shaped base. Then
there is one joystick about a foot tall. It has a wrist rest on it, a trigger
and four thumb buttons on the top of it. And then on the base there is also a
horseshoe shaped slider control which would work great for the throttle in say
Puppy 1, but I could not figure out how to detect that control either.

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Just for your info accessing both sticks on a gamepad is actually
quite simple with DirectInput. The joystates are lX and lY for the
left stick and rX and RY for the right stick. My memory of the correct
VB code is a bit fuzzy but it should look something like this.

' declare variables to get the x/y axis of both sticks
Dim x1 As Long
Dim x2 As Long
Dim y1 As Long
Dim y2 As Long

' Get the state of the left stick
x1 = joystate.lX
y1 = joystate.lY

' Get the state of the right stick
x2 = joystate.rX
y2 = joystate.rY

I hope that helps. Its been ages since I messed around with VB 6, but
that's basically how it works. Same basic code as the left stick but
instead of the lX and lY states you use the rX and RY states of the
joystate object you initialized in your joystick initialization.

Cheers!

However, if you go to the list archive page on mailarchive.org, of

Hi Valiant,

That sounds about right. Although, that unit was out more like 8 years

I've plugged it in on systems running Windows 8.1 and Windows finds
it, and everything works accept the force feedback which I don't
really care about anyway. Not a lot of accessible games have or use
force feedback so I can use it with most games without any big deal.

Hi Charles,

I posted that review right here on Audyssey. It should be in the list
archives, but not sure quite when as it was ages ago when I wrote it.
However, if you go to the list archive page on mailarchive.org, of
which there is a link to it on our site, you should be able to search
for the review. If you can't find it I can look for it and repost.

As to the software if you can't find it I'll look for the CD, zip it
up, and slap it up on Dropbox or something. Its perfectly legal to
distribute as it is freeware anyway.

Cheers!

Hi Valiant,

That sounds about right. Although, that unit was out more like 8 years
ago rather than 10. However, as far as controllers goes it is getting
long in the tooth. However, it still works fine with a lot of games.

I've plugged it in on systems running Windows 8.1 and Windows finds
it, and everything works accept the force feedback which I don't
really care about anyway. Not a lot of accessible games have or use
force feedback so I can use it with most games without any big deal.

Cheers!

Hi Charles,

Yep. It sure does. Although, one has to install Philips drivers and
software to use the force feedback feature. I haven't had XP for ages
so have been running the Microsoft generic Windows drivers which work
okay, but lack force feedback support for the device.

Cheers!

Hmmm I remember that a controler was discussed by philips the model

indicates what I have. The question is this: Is this an adequate
controller for the currently accessible games for blind gamers. I'm
still using Windows XP. Here's the description:

The USB cable is retractable and the button to retract it is
immediately to the right of the cable. Along this same surface are
2 buttons on the left edge and two more on the right edge. This
surface faces away from the gamer.

On the top surface on the left is a set of 4 sort of long buttons
that look like they might be arrows. These are just forward and to
the left of a round knob that can be moved in any direction and also
clicks when pressed straight down. There is another identical knob
to the right of this one. Between these knobs is a set of 4 buttons
in a diamond pattern, the rightmost one feels like an arrow that
points to the right. To the right, and slightly ahead of, the right
hand knob mentioned before is another set of 4 buttons that are a
bit bigger and are round, in a diamond shape. Northwest and
northeast of the center set of buttons, is another small
button. Between these two buttons is an oval-shaped, convex glass
or plastic piece that does not press. I'm thinking it is some
visual indicator of some sort. Finally, facing the gamer are two
handles with which to hold the controller.

Any feedback on this is appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

The main reason is because when Jim wrote Mach 1 TTS he exclusively
designed it for his Logitech racing wheel. While your game controller
will work with the game the buttons and controls won't exactly match
up with those the game were designed for. Plus while there are
substitute controls they won't be as intuitive as those the game was
designed with.

For instance on a typical racing wheel there is only one wheel. Turn
it left or right to turn the car. With a gamepad you have a POV hat
and two sticks. Depending on how your game controller is set up the
wheel could be replaced by either stick or the POV hat. Requiring some
trial and experimentation to figure out which performs the desired
action.

Same goes for controls like throttles and gearshifts. Since gamepads
are generally designed for different types of games you may or may not
have an equivalent control on your pad. Meaning that you may be
without a vital control just because of the type of controller being
used, or you have something that works but isn't immediately obvious.

What would help is a profiler where you can map the controls to
whatever works best for that specific controller.

Cheers!

northeast of the center set of buttons, is another small
button. Between these two buttons is an oval-shaped, convex glass
or plastic piece that does not press. I'm thinking it is some
visual indicator of some sort. Finally, facing the gamer are two
handles with which to hold the controller.

Any feedback on this is appreciated.

Fastest way is to have someone with sight just read the logo sticker on
the controller. because that description could fit a lot or ones not
highly known.

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Well, the description you gave of the game controller could fit any
number of gamepads as that is a fairly common description of a USB
gamepad. That said, if I reviewed it you may be talking about the
review I gave of the Philips 9009 rumblepad a few years ago.

In any case if you have XP drivers for the device it should be more
than sufficient for any audio games written in the last few years. As
I may have indicated in a prior post on list most audio games don't
really take full advantage of gamepads and other controllers anyway.
Most have very generic support allowing the device to use the POV hat
to move the character around, and the buttons will run, jump, fire,
etc. Most games like Troopanum II, for example, are so generic that
any game controller will do. So I wouldn't worry about having to buy
the latest and greatest to play games.

As it is I still use a lot of my older game controllers like the
Philips 9009 with audio games, because there hasn't been any need for
a newer controller. It works well with Troopanum, Topspeed, Jim
Kitchen's games, etc. In fact, the only reason I got the Logitech F710
was because it was wireless and I wanted something more portable
without a chord. Other than that my old Philips controller is just
fine as a controller.

cheers!

I don't recall this being a rumble pad, but Phillips does ring a bell. When
I plug it in, and start a game of Aliens in the Outback, nothing happens.
When selecting to configure the joystick, none is found. I'll try it on
some other games to see how it goes. If a driver is needed, any
suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Charles,

Yes. Use the CD that came with the controller. It comes with the
Windows drivers as well as the software needed for calibrating the
device. The software is also necessary if you wish to use force
feedback in games that have it like Topspeed.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2009-03-08 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,
The Phillips game controller does not need to be left plugged in. In
fact with the retractable usb chord it seams it is meant to be
unplugged, rolled up, and stored when not in use. Of course weather to
store it or leave it plugged in is your choice, and therefore is optional.
As for the little lights I have no idea about those. I imagine
eventually they might burn out, but they certainly have no effect on
actual controller input. Those are just status indicaters I think.

Charles Rivard wrote:

This may seem like a really dumb one, but here goes, anyway. I'll probably
install the game controller I have tomorrow afternoon. I think there is some
sort of light inside it. Should it always be left connected to the PC once
installed, as a mouse does? I'm just thinking about the possibility of wearing
out, or burning out, the light. Of course, the light won't bother me, but
could it, if burned out, affect the controler's performance? Thanks.
