Hi,

I was just about to update the report for the ODF Toolkit , although not a
great deal to say.

We are quiet but not dead just yet... :-)

Apologies for missing the deadline.

I believe one reason the openjdk GUI rendering is worse than the oracle one is,
apparently, that there's a chunk of OSF/Motif code in there whose provenance
isn't clear, until it was released as LGPL, was closed source. That is: code
sharing by cut-and-paste is always trouble

looking at the list of committers -it looks like a whole organisation is going
to move to doing OSS dev. That's a pretty big move.

1. The withdrawal of support for Groovy shows that pivotal have been ruthless
in the past about where to invest their OSS dev. It's a bit dangerous to list
Groovy as a reference for pivotal's OSS experience. It shows they've done it,
but it shows that the commitment is not indefinite funding (to be fair, no
single org can guarantee that). Spring is the one to really emphasis.

2. It will make it more of a barrier to getting other developers in; it'll take
active effort to bring them in, especially a transition to a process of
decision making over the lists, rather than in meetings. Again, a perennial
problem that we all encounter -not an argument against the proposal, just
something that will take active effort.

I don't see it leaving incubation with more non-pivotal dev/contrib than the
pivotal team, just because of the numbers. The mentors/vote will have to
consider how many external developers constitutes "enough" to be an active,
open dev community. Again, a permanent problem (*), it just means here that it
will be very skewed towards pivotal. I think that open-source discussion and
decision making should be a key metric here, rather than just looking at
numbers.

otherwise: impressive proposal!

(*) as a reminder, we in the slider-incubating project are hiring -along with
every other incubated project.

+1. Checked out the LICENSE, NOTICE, and DISCLAIMER files, checked to
make sure there were no jars or class files in the source distribution,
ran the tests (and quickly found the east of GMT issues :) ).

Hi all,

The Calcite community has voted on and approved a proposal to release
Apache Calcite 1.2.0-incubating.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this release. This is a
short release,
less than a month after 1.1, but there are 42 fixed issues
nevertheless. In

particular, Avatica has better coverage of the JDBC API and is much more
robust. You can read the release notes here:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-calcite/blob/branch-1.2/doc/HISTORY.md

During the vote we noted issue
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CALCITE-677: one test fails if you
run in a time zone east of Greenwich. The bug is minor, but affects the
build process as documented in the HOWTO. After a prolonged debate we
reached consensus that a note accompanying the release announcement was
sufficient.

Proposal:

Vote result:
3 binding +1 votes
2 non-binding +1 votes
No -1 votes

To be clear, there were conversations with Jim (as VP Legal) prior to
this submission. The ASF wouldn't accept the software grant until the
Incubator approved the proposal. Pivotal wouldn't release it as ALv2
until the ASF accepted the grant.

It's a chicken-and-egg problem - seeing the code through the
click-through evaluation license is the least bad scenario that drives
this proposal forward.

As a mentor unaffiliated with Pivotal, I'm not worried about the
provenance checks - Pivotal is ready to execute the software grant and
release it as ALv2.

Yes, it is. I'm confident in my conversations with the Pivotal team
that they fully understand what will be asked of them. However, as a
mentor, the proof will be in the pudding and will be demonstrated
through the Incubation process...or not.

Companies are always free to re-evaluate where they spend their time
and resources. I actually view the experience with Groovy as a
positive thing in the macro sense. The point of submitting Geode to
the ASF is to ensure the longevity of the project and community - the
lesson from Groovy is to ensure it is in appropriate foundation that
will care for it.

i second the opinion of justin, as Mentor I was one of those that suggested
this way.

The concerns raised below are very similar to my concerns, but they have to
with graduation,
and not entering Incubator. Most importantly both Mentors and the team are
aware of
the potential problems.

[Pre - IP Clearance] ec2stack and gstack donation to CloudStack

2015-04-13 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi,

This is a heads up and request for help to prepare for a IP clearance request
for two code base to be donated to Apache CloudStack:

ec2stack: https://github.com/BroganD1993/ec2stack

and,

gstack: https://github.com/NOPping/gstack

Its two software there were developed on github by myself and two other folks
(mostly them :) ). One of them is on the cloudstack PMC and the other one has
an ICLA on file.
The code is already ASF licensed.

I am a member and will do the work for the IP clearance forms and requests but
I have never done it, so I want to make sure I do this properly.

I am following instructions in [1].
I submitted a software grant for each code base to secretary@ today.
I committed a draft of the forms [2] and [3]
I edited [4] but do not know how to generate the html.

Do I need to drop a tarball somewhere or is pointing to the github releases
enough ?

Having a second pair of eyes to check everything would be nice,

Once everything is in order I will call a vote.

thanks for your time,

The name "Geode" was thought up by the Geode contributors at Pivotal.

Pivotal legal did a pretty extensive trademark search to ensure there would
be no infringement. It was their opinion that there is low risk of trademark
infringement with the AMD product.

However, its fully understandable that Apache legal needs to vet the name
of the project should it be accepted for incubation.

Thanks for the explanation, that was what I expected, but since a slight
concern has
been raised, I have the following proposal.

Get a statement from Pivotal legal, what they have done, and add it to the
proposal.

That will also give ASF trademark (not legal) a stepping stone.

I believe we evaluate the community, not the code.

However, in this case I would like to look at the code to get a feel for
whether I would be interested in contributing to the project.

Ross,

do we evaluate source code at the incubation-entry level, or do we evaluate
proposed development goals and development community propositions? I'm curious
about your thoughts.

RE: [DISCUSS] Geode Incubation proposal

2015-04-13 Thread Ross Gardler (MS OPEN TECH)
It's nothing to do with my browser. If I click the download link I get asked to
join the "Pivotal Network" before I can download it.

If I understand the response below correctly you misspoke when you said there
were "export" issues. That in fact there is no related export restriction, it's
actually about the licensing issue. If that's the case then the proposal is
correct in not highlighting these issues - thanks for clarifying that.

I replied to the third part in response to Bill's question. However, to be sure
my point gets across. Now that you have confirmed there are in fact no export
restrictions then I have no problem with the proposal. However, I'd still like
to be able to evaluate the code and to do so I would need to know what I'm
agreeing to under the evaluation license.

This must be a bug in your browser. What OS/Browser are you using?

The text of the license is also available in a separate file under the name
"Evaluation License":
https://network.pivotal.io/products/project-geode

Sorry for not being more explicit: this is just how Pivotal distribution
network works.
And we have to use it in this particular case in order to guarantee that the
evaluation license has been explicitly acknowledged (as opposed to just being
there in a tarball). All these constraints has nothing to do with the source
code itself.

I see that Bill has asked the question that I wanted to ask here, so I'll let
you reply in that part of the thread.

FWIW, the clickthrough license et al worked for me on my Mac with Chrome.

Inspecting the code will be a lot easier once the proposal is accepted
and we can import the code under ALv2 into our repositories.

I guess at this point I'm not sure what level of specific details
would be required.
Like I said: Pivotal has done a trademark clearance search to determine whether
the Geode name was available for use. The determination was that it is ok to
use it.

Of course, ASF always has to do a PODLINGNAMESEARCH before blessing
the name and we fully expect this to be the case here. I am not saying that
we somehow replaced that step. All I am saying is that chances of Geode
passing PODLINGNAMESEARCH are high. But that's just one company's
opinion.

Not sure what other level of details needs to be communicated. If somebody
can jump in and tell me specifics -- that would be appreciated.

I think Steve's plan to cancel this vote and spin up a new release candidate
with certain tests disabled is sensible and appropriate. The podling can go
about finding the best long term solution at its leisure, which may involve
new test data, downloading, etc as they see fit.

Hi,

+1 binding

I checked:
- artefact contains "incubating"
- signatures and hashes good
- LICENSE and NOTICE correct
- has DISCLAIMER
- All source files have correct headers
- No binaries (expect one used in testing which is gzipped text)
- Can compile from source but as noted a test fail

Thanks,
Justin

+1 for Geode accepted into Incubator.

It shouldn't be a big issue whether the codebase is available or not at the
moment. It is part of incubation to shape it up to an open source project,
that doesn't have to happen a priori (can't recall that Google Wave was
available as OSS before coming to ASF, but I could remember wrongly)

Anyway, looking forward to see this being accepted.
