There is something wrong about the network of my lab, then the emerge --sync can't suceed. Not sure what you mean here... The device.map file can be used when you 'install' the grub MBR and (possibly) the stage1.5 files. So when you do a "setup hd0", it knows that corresponds to /dev/sda in the operating system. It should match the device order used by the system BIOS. At boot time, the ordering of hd0, hd1, etc is dependant upon the system BIOS. hd0 is virtually always the drive being used to boot. >From the grub documentation: " Note that GRUB does _not_ distinguish IDE from SCSI - it simply counts the drive numbers from zero, regardless of their type. Normally, any IDE drive number is less than any SCSI drive number, although that is not true if you change the boot sequence by swapping IDE and SCSI drives in your BIOS." One option you have is to drop into the grub shell on boot, and do something like: find /grub/stage2 That should list all drives and partitions where /grub/stage2 is found. I use the /etc/portage/package.* files for unmasking packages. Just curious if there were any packages out there to help keep those files organized. Basically, if the package comes out of package.mask, is there an easy way to take it out of those package.* files also. Also, if there are packages in those files that are outdated... an easy way to remove them. For instance: right now i have =mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5 ~x86 in my /etc/portage/package.keywords When it comes out of ~x86 ... is there a script to just clean those out? RE: [gentoo-user] udev/initramfs problem
The current kernel build process is simply: # genkernel -- menuconfig --install all make.profile=2006.0 gcc=3.4.5-r1 When in the ash shell environment, I notice that there are few static nodes in /dev. ( i.e. console, pty etc.) In this environment, I am able to load the modules manually, but still no device is visible in /dev. I note that the MPT driver structure has changed as well for this kernel - which, I have built both modularly and strait into the kernel. I have been doing a great deeal of reading and have found that klibc may be an issue, however, building older (2.6.12-r4) kernels works without error. Also noted here is that 2.6.12-r4 still has devfs features available. So, to answer your questions: - is the driver for the LSI controller compiled into the kernel? >>> I have built the driver both ways - if it isn't, is the module contained in the initramfs? Is it a module for the right kernel? >>> The module is contained within the initramfs and loads (manually) - and how is the module to be loaded by the initramfs? >>> My presumption is that the rules within 50-udev.rules provide for this. - is there a static or a dynamic /dev in the initramfs? >>> My best discription here is dynamic with a few static nodes present. - if dynamic, how is it managed? - what are the commands the initramfs uses to stage into "real root"? >>> I will look deeper for this one. Ultimately, when the time comes to pivot, the disk that would be /dev/sda is not available and, therefore, /dev/sda2 is likewise unavailable. I beleive that it is at the PCI level where this failure occures, because, if the PCI interface ti the controler were properly handled, then the scsi bus it provides would be available. [gentoo-user] Way OT : DDR2-667 Memory and Heat Issues
I'm thinking of getting some 1GB Ram Module of the newest 667Mhz Memory. Then I came into this article in the inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31041 [SNIP] On one Intel booth, the demo showed how, at full speed, a 1 GB DDR2-667 SO DIMM in a "thin and light" notebook reached an awfully hot 85 degrees Celsius case temperature ... ...certain temperature limit is breached, throttles the DIMM speed down, say 50 per cent for instance in this case - from 667 MH to 333 MHz effective throughput. [/SNIP] if this is the case, why the heck would I want to get a 1GB 667 Memory Module which is like USD25 pricier than a 533 Mhz 1GB module? Another Q: I have more than one boxen and would like to use the same gpg key. Should I just copy over the ~/.gpg directory, or is it more involved than that? For the same purpose would it also be feasible to save .gpg on a USB key and use it on other machines or is there a security risk in doing this? -- Regards, Mick -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Digging for the id of your device 1043 8006 reveals a linux kernel mailing list archive thread: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0410.0/0023.html with the identical problem: the device worked in some computer and not in other. I see two possibilities: a slave controller chip incompatibility or insufficient power problem, device wants to sink more current than port actually provides at +5V. Port should provide up to 500mA, while many notebooks are very weak at usb power and do not keep up the standard. To eliminate the first one, you should seek for the computer (or maybe an external usb hub) which will work with that chip. To eliminate the power issue on your equipment, you can try to measure consumption at the +5V with some prepared usb cable or even try to feed the device from an external power source. You will need laboratory equipment to do it (A regulated laboratory power supply with current limitation). Ask some electronics engineer. As a first aid, try an external usb hub with it's own power supply. 1G flash chips require a lot of power to operate, and not having enough is consistent with your symptoms of "no media". -- Petr -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I don't think so : the 32MB is consistent with the database at http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids , if not with reality. The problem is wether or not this database has some influence... The first time I saw those 32 MB (a few days ago, when the key worked and was almost empty), df -h told me there was 1006 MB left on the key. Furthermore, the notice implied it should be reformated with a special windows-only tool to use the encryption feature. > Have you tried repartitioning the > device in Linux, using cfdisk -z (fdisk probably has an option to ignore > any existing partition table too).
