There is something wrong about the network of my lab, then
the emerge --sync can't suceed.
I noticed that rsync freezed at receiving file list, but
it didn't in fact and it just didn't print the process
of receiving the file list. This is a change in emerge system.
You can enable the original act of rsync by adding this line to
your /etc/make.conf:

   PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS = "--progress"

If you are in Beijing,
it is easy to do the test using an external usb hub with it's own power supply
for free. Because Beijing has the biggest computer market in north of China!
Simply, you go to one of the sereral big computer stores on the
Zhong Guan Cun street, the street is near Beijing University, and ask
for a free test with the usb hub. If it works, you can buy it with 10 or
15 dollars or cheaper!
You'd better ask your host to come with you for bargain!

By the way, I'm in Beijing now, if you are in Beijing too, you can call me for

Not sure what you mean here...

The device.map file can be used when you 'install' the grub MBR and
(possibly) the stage1.5 files. So when you do a "setup hd0", it knows
that corresponds to /dev/sda in the operating system. It should match
the device order used by the system BIOS.

At boot time, the ordering of hd0, hd1, etc is dependant upon the
system BIOS. hd0 is virtually always the drive being used to boot.

>From the grub documentation:

" Note that GRUB does _not_ distinguish IDE from SCSI - it simply
counts the drive numbers from zero, regardless of their type. Normally,
any IDE drive number is less than any SCSI drive number, although that
is not true if you change the boot sequence by swapping IDE and SCSI
drives in your BIOS."

One option you have is to drop into the grub shell on boot, and do
something like:

find /grub/stage2

That should list all drives and partitions where /grub/stage2 is found.

[gentoo-user] portage: config's

2006-04-18 Thread Dan LaMotte
I use the /etc/portage/package.* files for unmasking packages.

Just curious if there were any packages out there to help keep those
files organized. Basically, if the package comes out of package.mask,
is there an easy way to take it out of those package.* files also.

Also, if there are packages in those files that are outdated... an easy
way to remove them.

For instance:

right now i have
=mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5 ~x86

in my /etc/portage/package.keywords

When it comes out of ~x86 ... is there a script to just clean those out?

If not I'll probably make one, but i'd rather not reinvent the wheel.

Thanks.

Then there's either no daemon that creates the devices (udev) or it
isn't somehow configured correctly.

Somehow I doubt that. Usually you have it either the one way or the
other. But as you said you could load them, I guess they're modules.
You might want to try to recompile a kernel with all drivers compiled
in.

That would explain it. udev would be needed in the initramfs to create
devices upon module loading.

So there's no hotplugging or similar. Try to compile the drivers
directly into the kernel.

Ah, this _is_ in the initramfs? Is there a udevd spawned in initramfs?

Is "dmesg" available in initramfs? It may contain hints upon module
loading. But at that time those hints should be print out to console,
anyway. You're shure that those are the correct drivers, aren't you?

I very much doubt it. But there _is_ something screwed in those

OK, you get the idea. That thing was starting to get on my nerves. :/

Yeah, I don't know why someone would ever think that
STRING="a.txt b.txt c.txt"
made STRING empty or undefined. Or why substituting in the value "b.txt"
would give the desired "a.txt c.txt".

(Hi Zac! :P)

> $ STRING="a.txt b.txt c.txt"
> $ REMOVE="b.txt"
> $ echo ${STRING/$REMOVE/}
> a.txt c.txt

However, it actually leave an extra space in the variable, which got
swallowed by your shell since you didn't quote the expansion. Following
the above with:
$ echo "${STRING/$REMOVE/}"
a.txt c.txt

You might try either including the leading or trailing space in REMOVE or
running the string through shell expansion (as you did by calling echo
without quoting the expansion)

The original poster might want to look into bash arrays, esp. since the
${VARIABLE/MATCH/REPLACEMENT} expansion doesn't work in sh either (so we
are already into bash-specific shell), AFAIK.

for some time i switched to gcc-4.1.0 leaving gcc-3.4.6 as backup. after

Sounds like you use kde. Try modifying your setup to match:
$ cat .kde/env/keychain.rc

#Must support $() and eval
eval $(keychain --eval --clear --quiet --inherit any-once --stop others)

RE: [gentoo-user] udev/initramfs problem

2006-04-18 Thread Johnson, Maurice E CTR NSWCDL-K74
The current kernel build process is simply:

# genkernel -- menuconfig --install all

make.profile=2006.0
gcc=3.4.5-r1

When in the ash shell environment, I notice that there are few static nodes in
/dev. ( i.e. console, pty etc.) In this environment, I am able to load the
modules manually, but still no device is visible in /dev.

I note that the MPT driver structure has changed as well for this kernel -
which, I have built both modularly and strait into the kernel. I have been
doing a great deeal of reading and have found that klibc may be an issue,
however, building older (2.6.12-r4) kernels works without error. Also noted
here is that 2.6.12-r4 still has devfs features available.

So, to answer your questions:
- is the driver for the LSI controller compiled into the kernel?
>>> I have built the driver both ways
- if it isn't, is the module contained in the initramfs? Is it a module
  for the right kernel?
>>> The module is contained within the initramfs and loads (manually)
- and how is the module to be loaded by the initramfs?
>>> My presumption is that the rules within 50-udev.rules provide for this.
- is there a static or a dynamic /dev in the initramfs?
>>> My best discription here is dynamic with a few static nodes present.
- if dynamic, how is it managed?
- what are the commands the initramfs uses to stage into "real root"?
>>> I will look deeper for this one.

Ultimately, when the time comes to pivot, the disk that would be /dev/sda is
not available and, therefore, /dev/sda2 is likewise unavailable.

I beleive that it is at the PCI level where this failure occures, because, if
the PCI interface ti the controler were properly handled, then the scsi bus it
provides would be available.

Thank you for your time.

Hm? The initramfs is in charge to load proper modules, if needed. But
there shouldn't be a root device if there's an initramfs. Are you

Because it's quicker to learn 4 or 5 simple, small tools than it is to

Seriously, EVMS didn't really add any value to my setup, for more detail

I've never needed any of the few additional features EVMS provides. (The
only one that comes to mind right now is BBR, which modern HDs already
do.) It /can/ make things a /little/ easier, since it allows you to resize
a block device and the filesystem (or whatever) on top of it with a single
(non-atomic) operatation. However, I didn't like any of the UIs provided
by EVMS, I found them both too minimalistic in what information they
showed by default, and cluttered with options I'll never use.

I prefer the command-line for most administrative tasks, and I prefer the
dm/md/lvm/fs-specific tools over the EVMS CLI or ncurses interface. I
know that none of this really answers your question directly, but I wanted
to provide some background.

I don't think that EVMS adds any features (= value) I (or most people) will
use; I think its interface has less value than the interfaces already
exist.

That's a bad news, since the goal of an USB stick ist precisely to move
data from one computer to another.

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=10965609274&r=1&w=2 >

what is strange, is that the 1043:8006 was precisely the identity of
the stick on the working computer. Futhermore, this usb stick has worked
on the same computer.

I didn't know. I naively thought "the bigger / the better" and I don't
really need something so big...

Could that be that the power consumption of the stick increases with the
volume of the files on it ? Which would explain the correctness of the
first tests (with small files) and the problem when the key holds a
bigger file...

By the way, if it's a hardware problem, would it be useful to get the
stick replaced by another of the same model ? Or is that a model
problem ?

[gentoo-user] udev/initramfs problem

2006-04-18 Thread Johnson, Maurice E CTR NSWCDL-K74
Title: udev/initramfs problem

We have several dual cpu systems - half intel, the other half AMD.
For our purposes, we are building to the i686 arch.

The hosts with the below described problem are running on Tyan mother
boards with LSI Logic SCSI controllers embedded in PCI-E bus.

We rescently upgraded to the 2.6.15-r1 kernel and life is great on the
systems that use the adaptec scsi controllers. However, LSI Logic does
not appear to be seen by udev or, more likely, initramfs facilities.
Consequently, no root device is found.

I am missing something but don't know what. Below is the output of

1. It worked under Linux, in the very same laptop.
I wrote 4 small files on it.
Then I plugged it on an old windows PC and wrote a big file (~100MB) on
it.
Then I unplugged it (maybe badly: I'm not sure)
2. And a few days later, I tried to plug it on my linux laptop, with no
success.

I finally managed to plug this disk onto a windows machine. Windows sees
the disk, but can neither read it nor format it (as far as my Chinese
guests could tell me from the error messages)
So the disk doesn't work on two different OS, so it is likely out of
order (after loading its 5th file !). I hope I can convince my resseller
to replace it.

By the way, it's a Kingston DataTraveler Elite 1GB.

Thanks a lot to all the people who helped, especially Petr, who lost a

Wait, it worked before under Linux? I don't think you mentioned that
previously. Was this on the same computer?

The other possiblity I can think of is that this is a difference
between the USB 1.1 vs 2.0 interfaces. I noticed it is the uhci
driver that is interfacing with the device. Does the computer have
2.0 ports, and if so, do you have the EHCI driver enabled? Have you
tried a different port? Is this plugged in directly, or through a

Unicode still messes up a lot of portage/compile thingies. You will want
to leave your system locale to C or POSIX and set individual locales of
your users to zh_CN.utf8 so that portage and all child processes will
not run using unicode.

That doesn't work. This does:

[gentoo-user] Way OT : DDR2-667 Memory and Heat Issues

2006-04-18 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I'm thinking of getting some 1GB Ram Module of the newest 667Mhz Memory.
Then I came into this article in the inquirer

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31041

[SNIP]
On one Intel booth, the demo showed how, at full speed, a 1 GB DDR2-667
SO DIMM in a "thin and light" notebook reached an awfully hot 85 degrees
Celsius case temperature
...
...certain temperature limit is breached, throttles the DIMM speed down,
say 50 per cent for instance in this case - from 667 MH to 333 MHz
effective throughput.
[/SNIP]

if this is the case, why the heck would I want to get a 1GB 667 Memory
Module which is like USD25 pricier than a 533 Mhz 1GB module? (This is
for a new Thinkpad X60, BTW)

Thanks Mike, I'll try it when I get home. However, I would still like
to find out why the ~/.xsession solution does not work . . .
especially as I am not using KDM.

Another Q: I have more than one boxen and would like to use the same
gpg key. Should I just copy over the ~/.gpg directory, or is it more
involved than that? For the same purpose would it also be feasible to
save .gpg on a USB key and use it on other machines or is there a
security risk in doing this?

2006-04-18 Thread Petr Kocmid
On Tuesday 18 April 2006 10:14, Frédéric Grosshans wrote:

So, you definitely have a hardware problem. Digging for the id of your device
1043 8006 reveals a linux kernel mailing list archive thread:

http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0410.0/0023.html

with the identical problem: the device worked in some computer and not in
other.

I see two possibilities: a slave controller chip incompatibility or
insufficient power problem, device wants to sink more current than port
actually provides at +5V. Port should provide up to 500mA, while many
notebooks are very weak at usb power and do not keep up the standard.

To eliminate the first one, you should seek for the computer (or maybe an
external usb hub) which will work with that chip.

To eliminate the power issue on your equipment, you can try to measure
consumption at the +5V with some prepared usb cable or even try to feed the
device from an external power source. You will need laboratory equipment to
do it (A regulated laboratory power supply with current limitation). Ask some
electronics engineer.

As a first aid, try an external usb hub with it's own power supply.

1G flash chips require a lot of power to operate, and not having enough is
consistent with your symptoms of "no media".

I don't think so : the 32MB is consistent with the database at
http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids , if not with reality. The problem is
wether or not this database has some influence...

The first time I saw those 32 MB (a few days ago, when the key worked
and was almost empty), df -h told me there was 1006 MB left on the key.

Furthermore, the notice implied it should be reformated with a special
windows-only tool to use the encryption feature.

Possibly. Some USB keys use two partitions for encryption, with the data
being held on the second, larger, encrypted partition. This may also be
why the device is reported as 32MB. Have you tried repartitioning the
device in Linux, using cfdisk -z (fdisk probably has an option to ignore

So my next steps are :
1. Switching back to usb-storage

By the way, I can afford losing the data on the key. I mainly want to be
able to use it. Does that giev you other ideas ?

I've just tried the ub driver, and it's the same problem (/dev/uba node
but no /dev/uba1), with the following dmesg output.
usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
ub(2.4): GetMaxLUN returned 0, using 1 LUNs
usbcore: registered new driver ub

Maybe my disk doesn't work. I have to find a windows box somewhere to
give it a try...

Never give up.

Try hexdump on the device above:
hexdump -C /dev/disk/by-id/usb-Generic_USB_Flash_Drive

Here is an example of mine, having partition table with PT boot code at offset
0 and FAT16 boot sector at offset 4000hex with msdos/windows boot code (it
was formatted in W2k). If you don't see any of the like anywhere on the disk,
it is possibly encrypted on-chip or broken. You may even see some windows
virus on your PT and/or fat boot instead of boot code. If you have no valid
partition (since your fdisk fails on it) but able to find your FAT somewhere
on the disk, it is possible to reconstruct, but I advise to dd whole disk to
file before. To seek the boot sector of the volume, look for the signature 55
aa hex at end of sector, just like mine are at offsets 01fe-01ff (pt)
41fe-41ff (fat boot). Sector size is 512==200hex.

hexdump -C /dev/disk/by-id/usb-USB_512MB_3EA84191EC2E0009
