Re: [gentoo-user] editing MPEG2
is there a light-weight MPEG2 editor (preferable in portage)? I don't need anything fancy, just something to cut off a bit at the begin and the end of a file. And no, kino doesn't like MPEG2. If you don't care about the quality of the cutted scenes projectx, is what i reccommend. But projectx and many other editors are only capable of cutting on a I-Frame The video cut theory is explained at http://www.radonmaster.de/robernd/tMPEG.html unfortunatly it is in german If you want to cut frame accurate (cut on B- and P-Frames too) i think ttcut is the better choice, here you can enable encoding mode so it uses mencoder (and you don't have to read the immense man page for mencoder) to recode the video. Not the whole video is encoded, only a maximum of 14 pictures (i think 15 pictures is the standard GOP lenght for MPEG video) around the cut mark depending on where exactly you want to cut i don't know if kino or avidemux can handle this now, if anyone knows better please tell me! -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] OT: Bugzilla as support system w/ maillist integration
Hi folks, I'm now making use huge of bugzilla for quite a while and now thinking about using it for user support things like this maillist. An mail robot could be the bridge between classic maillist style and bugzilla: + you write some mail (new thread) to the robot/list address, it opens a new bug and puts in the body subject as bugname and the body as comment. It is also possible to give the robot some meta information w/ using some specific syntax (ie. just like some maillist bots like majordomo have their control syntax). + each new bug is posted to some topic annoucement list (where people subscribe, who want to see new threads) and to the full distribution list (which gets all traffic). + if you reply to some of these mails, their body is added as comment, maybe additional metadata parsed. The result is again posted to the people who subscribed this bug/topic and also the full distribution list. + the mail robot also allows special commands, like subscribing or unsubscribing some topic, fetching all postings of some topic, etc. In comparison to classic maillists, it brings us some cool features: + People can subscribe to single threads (ie. by replying or explicit jumping on the CC list), and later they can unsubscribe themself. + Nice archiving (in an database) along w/ issue metadata. + Some support worklow (ie. if we have some people dedicated to user support, they have an tool for organizing their work). + Duplicate topics can be put together by marking them as duplicate. [gentoo-user] high packet loss
Hello, I wanted to change the router/firewall at a small office lan to hardened gentoo. The machine in question sits between a consumer grade adsl modem and 3 different networks (so a total of 4 eth cards on the server). However, there is a high packet loss (25-50%) between server and adsl modem. cat /proc/net/dev reveals high error count on the receive side of the eth card connected to modem (transmit side has no errors). I changed the eth card and the network cable but the problem stays the same. The same eth card and cable works without any errors with a FC3 server. I am beginning to think that the errors are because of a faulty (on my part) sofware config. I am out of ideas to try. Any pointers to possible causes of high packet loss are highly appreciated. Generally I find that I want to cut at a major transition - eg the adverts coming on. At a major transition there is usually an I-Frame. If you don't care about the quality of the cutted scenes projectx, is what i reccommend. But projectx and many other editors are only capable of cutting on a I-Frame The video cut theory is explained at http://www.radonmaster.de/robernd/tMPEG.html unfortunatly it is in german anyone know of an equivalnet page in English? If you want to cut frame accurate (cut on B- and P-Frames too) i think ttcut is the better choice, here you can enable encoding mode so it uses mencoder (and you don't have to read the immense man page for mencoder) to recode the video. Not the whole video is encoded, only a maximum of 14 pictures (i think 15 pictures is the standard GOP lenght for MPEG video) around the cut mark depending on where exactly you want to cut i don't know if kino or avidemux can handle this now, if anyone knows better please tell me! -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list -- Nick Rout [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
