At one point berkdb and gdbm conflicted in cyrus-sasl and I think there
were issues in PHP as well... this is roughly 2-3 years ago. I started
turning berkdb off for most things and never noticed a difference. My
understanding is that they do the same thing.

I'd say using neither is an issue. Apache will start, process config
files, and then use berkdb or gdbm to create a hash of the vhosts for
fast lookups. I'd assume Apache has some less efficient fallback code to
hash configs or it would fail to build without one or the other.

[gentoo-user] libGL issues & AIGLX slowness

2006-10-22 Thread Marco Calviani

Hi all,
i've managed to install the radeon opensource drivers on my Radeon
9700 laptop (with also direct rendering enabled). However, whenever i
launch a 3D application the following error appears:

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b

In addition to this i've tried to enable AIGLX, it works (that is it
starts), but it is VERY SLOW, and i think this is related to the
preceding error.

NB: i'm not using any overlay, just what is normally available in Portage.

Any ideas or experiences on this?

Thanks in advance,

That guide doesn't mention sguil so I guess it's safe to turn it off.

You should hava a backup of your linux-kernel configuration in /boot.
use ls -al /usr/src/linux to check that the version of the kernel
source is the same than the kernel image you use. In which case you
can:
ln -s /boot/Config- /usr/src/linux/.config

and try re-emerging again

Hrm, I can't think of a good reason those files should have the wrong
md5sum. A wrong mtime could be caused by mtime fixups done by the init
system, but an incorrect md5sum is most likely breakage.

Hrm, I know wireless-tools uses (or used) the configuration in that file; I
would imagine wpa_supplicant would as well, but I've never used it.

From the documentation in wireless.example (which is only used with
iwconfig / wireless-tools) you can do WPA on certain drivers, like the
rt2500.

I believe you will need to use wpa_supplicant with your atheros chipset.

Around line 159 in my net.example says:
# By default don't wait for wpa_suppliant to associate and authenticate.
# If you would like to, so can specify how long in seconds
#associate_timeout_eth0=60
# A value of 0 means wait forever.

It may be possible that you need to set this variable to 0 to prevent
backgrounding, independent of the ifplugd/netplug quashing.

"this file" in my message refers to the file kdesvn-repo.eclass which was
referenced in your error message and quoted in my reply.

At that point your understanding is correct. You will take
kdesvn-repo.eclass from CVS, put it in your /usr/portage/eclass directory,
remove unsermake, and then
*REMOVE* /usr/portage/eclass/kdesvn-repo.eclass. (As I said before,
having an eclass from out of the main tree can cause all kinds of
breakage.)

Re: [gentoo-user] Disabling net.ath0 backgrounding

2006-10-22 Thread Grant

> How can I keep net.ath0 from "backgrounding" at boot?

This is ifplugd or netplug waiting until link is established before
configuring the device. They are also responsible for bring the device up
and down is response to link failure and reestablishment. Normally, this
is a desired behavior because it, for example, only brings up your
laptop's wired connection if it is actually plugged in and automatically
brings it down when you unplug.

If you want to disable one or the other for a particular device, you can
add !netplug or !ifplugd to the modules list of that interface
(see /etc/conf.d/net.example for details). You can also disable link
detection entirely by adding !plug to the modules list of that interface.

An alternative that may be closer to what you want, is to let
ifplugd/netplug wait for some period of time before backgrounding. This
still allows the interface to be started and stopped in response to link
status, but when explicitly started, it will perform configuration in the
foreground if link is detecting before timeout. To establish such a
timeout add:plug_timeout="" to your network configuration

I tried the following in /etc/conf.d/net :

modules_ath0=( "!plug" )

but it still goes into "backgrounding". When ath0 won't connect to
the wireless network I need to be able to see more about what is
happening when it's trying to connect. Is that still possible?

[gentoo-user] Firewalling and Sambra printer.

2006-10-22 Thread Pupeno
Hello,
I have two computers (that are involved in this problem), phoenix is my Gentoo
workstation and desktop-1 is someone else's Windows box. Someone else happens
to have a printer and I don't, so, from time to time I use his printer. The
printer is shared, obviously, thru SMB (it's a windows box). I configured
CUPS to connect to it (I just used the KDE Kcontrol to configure it).
My problem is that when I bring up my firewall (a firewall using iptables on
phoenix, just protecting phoenix) printing stops working. In fact, all access
to desxtop-1 thru smb stops working.
The firewall is very simple, a simple stateful all-incomming-closed firewall:

# iptables -vL
Chain INPUT (policy DROP 35510 packets, 16M bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source
destination
329K 558M ACCEPT all -- lo any anywhere anywhere
36M 54G ACCEPT all -- anyany anywhere anywhere

state RELATED,ESTABLISHED
3 228 ACCEPT icmp -- anyany anywhere anywhere

icmp echo-request limit: avg 30/min burst 5
120 7057 ACCEPT icmp -- anyany anywhere anywhere
160 ACCEPT tcp -- anyany anywhere anywhere

tcp dpt:ssh

Chain FORWARD (policy DROP 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source
destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 21M packets, 3426M bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source
destination
phoenix ~ #

Do you know why after bringing up this firewall I can't use the printer
anymore and/or how to solve it ?

Thank you.

In the amd64-2006+ and x86-2005.1+ profiles both berkdb and gdbm are on by

Seems to be serail mouseso the settings for the protocol are
  (possibly) wrong..

Feeding Google with"xorg mouse protocol serial" I found (first hit):

  (cite):
When you choose, keep in mind the following rule of thumb:

   1. "Logitech" protocol is for old serial mouse models from Logitech. Modern
Logitech mice use either "MouseMan" or "Microsoft" protocol.
   2. Most 2-button serial mice support the "Microsoft" protocol.
   3. 3-button serial mice may work with the "Mousesystems" protocol. If it
doesn't, it may work instead with the "Microsoft" protocol although the third
(middle) button won't function. 3-button serial mice may also work with the
"Mouseman" protocol under which the third button may function as expected.
   4. 3-button serial mice may have a small switch at the bottom of the mouse
to choose between ``MS'' and ``PC'', or ``2'' and ``3''. ``MS'' or ``2''
usually mean the "Microsoft" protocol. ``PC'' or ``3'' will choose the
"MouseSystems" protocol.
   5. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel, it may be compatible with
the "IntelliMouse" protocol.
   6. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel and it doesn't work with the
"IntelliMouse" protocol, you have to use it as a regular 2- or 3-button serial
mouse.

Should be, unless it is something peculiar about wireless (don't use
wireless much) or atheros cards specifically.

Try the script below instead, it might not fix everything, but it's less

Rescue this file from the Gentoo portage tree CVS attic (It should be
under the "eclass" directory) and place it in the tree or an overlay.
*BUT ONLY LONG ENOUGH TO UNINSTALL UNSERMAKE*. Having eclasses from out
of tree can cause untold problems.

I'm not sure exactly where web access to the CVS repo. is, but I'm sure
some kind soul on this list does.

because the touchpad has to be configured differently to the usb mice,
otherwise things like "emulate3buttons" don't always work (on the
touchpad). Also, I have different acceleration settings on different
mice, so I couldn't do that if they all used the same

Thanks. I do indeed have CorePointer, and AlwaysCore for my various
mice - and it works, so I don't think changing the xorg.conf file will
fix it.

It's just when I unplug a working usb mouse, it won't work when I plug
it back in, UNLESS I switch to a console first.

any other ideas?

If you're using Firefox or any other Netscape-compatible browser

You can confirm those are all configuration files? If not, please provide
the list...

They are all in /etc/ (including many init.d) except for:

/sbin/runscript.sh
/sbin/functions.sh
/lib64/rcscripts/sh/net.sh
/sbin/depscan.sh

Some of them show incorrect md5sum instead of wrong mtime.

It's possible, albeit unlikely, that the two modules lines are conflicting,
try removing both of them and adding:
modules_ath0=( "wpa_supplicant" "!plug")
above your config_ath0 line.

I changed that with no luck.

This may also be some behavior that is wpa_supplicant specific and I've
never used that particular piece of software.

Sorry, that should have been:
grep -Ev '^[[:space:]]*(#.*)?$' /etc/conf.d/wireless

I actually don't have that file at all.

You should just be able to type it in or cut/copy and paste from my
original email. bash (and indeed most shells) don't interpret the input
from the command line significantly different than the content of a script
file.

If I use spaces instead of line breaks so I can put it all on one line
it doesn't seem to work out. I'm missing something here.

I use kmplayer embeded in konqueror to watch wmp media streams of football
games at liverpoolfc.tv No idea if it will work with firefox. It's not a
specific plugin, in fact thinking about it I not sure exactly how it
works :-) But I got it working so it can't be that difficult. Check out the
gentoo wiki. That's the first place I usually go to get info on these sorts
of things. You need mplayer obviously and it needs to be compiled with
win32codecs.

You should be able to use linebreaks; bash will, appropriately, wait for
more input if you are in the middle of a larger construct (if/while/etc.).

You should also be able to use spaces, but you have to add a semi-colon
after each simple command. If I was to do it as a one-liner it would be:
if /etc/init.d/net.ath0 status | grep -q started; then /etc/init.d/net.ath0
restart; else /etc/init.d/net.ath0 start; fi

[gentoo-user] provide registration service on a headless server without web

2006-10-22 Thread 张韡武
Hello. I am running a server which currently unlike most other servers on
the world, do not provide web service yet.

Currently I need to allow users to register themselves. They first
through
a registration process get a username and password, get themselves their
home directories under /home and then they can use ssh to login to the
server to do a few things like search for addressbook.

I think of two ideas:

1) write a script that runs on telnet port.
users can run telnet, talk to the script which will ask a few questions
like your fullname and username desired. If everything qualify, a user
is
created on the system.

2) write a web service that does the same.

1) is probably not save and 2) adds a little bit overhead and complecity
of the system by adding a web service.

Is there a standard registration routine I can use? That we I don't have
to write my own script, which could be a security risk.

Thanks!

[gentoo-user] Can iptables recognize SSH traffic?

2006-10-22 Thread Nico Schümann

Hello folks,

I have a web server running on port 80 and a SSH daemon running on
port 22. I don't want to change these ports because it just works this
way.
Can I configure iptables that it just accepts port 80 and if I try to
connect with a ssh client to port 80 to forward this ssh traffic to
port 22? I know how all this accept and forwards stuff works, but I
can't find out an option to recognize ssh traffic.

Tanks a lot,
Nico

i don't think so. for doing it you'll need a application layer firewall...

you should try this: http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/

The C ABI has been stable for years, only the C++ ABI is being broken
with each new gcc release.

Basically, as long as it isn't linking to anything under
/usr/lib/gcc/..., you should be safe.

Re: [gentoo-user] xorg can't work with hotplugged mice?

So don't use /dev/input/mice for "all" mice, just for the USB mouse
that you plug in. Use /dev/input/eventX for the synaptics trackpad.
Here is what I have for my two mouse entries in xorg.conf, and it
hotplugs USB mice perfectly:

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Default"
   Screen 0 "LCD"
   InputDevice"touchpad" "CorePointer"
   InputDevice"usbmouse"
   InputDevice"keyboard" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "touchpad"
   Driver "synaptics"
   Option "Device" "/dev/input/trackpad_evt"
   Option "Protocol" "event"
   Option "SHMConfig" "On"
   Option "LeftEdge" "1500"
   Option "TopEdge" "1300"
   Option "RightEdge" "5400"
   Option "BottomEdge" "4400"
   Option "EdgeMotionUseAlways" "On"
   Option "EdgeMotionMinZ" "70"
   Option "EdgeMotionMaxZ" "85"
   Option "EdgeMotionMinSpeed" "25"
   Option "EdgeMotionMaxSpeed" "700"
   Option "MinSpeed" "0.0"
   Option "MaxSpeed" "0.3"
   Option "AccelFactor" "0.3"
   Option "UpDownScrolling" "On"
   Option "LeftRightScrolling" "On"
   Option "Buttons" "8"
   Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "usbmouse"
   Driver "mouse"
   Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
   Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
   Option "Buttons" "8"
   Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
   Option "SendCoreEvents" "On"
EndSection

I use a custom udev rule to make the "trackpad_evt" device, otherwise
my keyboard and trackpad event nodes get mixed up between event0 and
event1:

BUS=="input", KERNEL=="event*", SYSFS{phys}=="isa0060/serio1/input0",
NAME:="input/trackpad_evt", SYMLINK="input/%k"

Either this, or you have to wait for a version of X.org that truly
supports mouse hot plugging.

Are the htaccess/htpasswd files readable by apache?

[gentoo-user] What is the best (i.e. most painless) PCI express graphics card for office use?

2006-10-22 Thread Wolfgang Liebich
Hi,
My new office PC has an on board intel adapter (945GZ), which cannot
cope with the SUN GDM-5410 workstation monitor I want to plug in. So I
have the option to buy a PCI express graphics card which can accept
custom modelines.
I'm searching for a card which is maxmimal painless. 3D performance is
not an issue, 2D performance IS. Power usage should be low (I do NOT
want the fans running at max speed on the slightes provocation :-).
On my *old* LinuxPC I have a Matrox G200, which could cope with the GDM
monitor - but my new PC has no AGP slot anymore. So I'm asking for
recommendations...
Ciao,
Wolfgang

if it is a firewall issue, keep it simple..
iptables -I INPUT -s his_ip_address -j ACCEPT

also, if you are trying to block pings over limit, put in:

iptables -I INPUT 4 -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j DROP
(change the 4 to whatever the number rule will be from top if you have
changed it)..

but I can't use /dev/input/mice. I may not have been clear before, but
if I use /dev/input/mice, then the touchpad looses its Emulate3Buttons
when I use a real third button on a usb mouse...

You might want to take a look at port knocking:
