[gentoo-user] libGL issues & AIGLX slowness
Hi all, i've managed to install the radeon opensource drivers on my Radeon 9700 laptop (with also direct rendering enabled). However, whenever i launch a 3D application the following error appears: libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b In addition to this i've tried to enable AIGLX, it works (that is it starts), but it is VERY SLOW, and i think this is related to the preceding error. NB: i'm not using any overlay, just what is normally available in Portage. Any ideas or experiences on this? Thanks in advance, M -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] Disabling net.ath0 backgrounding
> How can I keep net.ath0 from "backgrounding" at boot? This is ifplugd or netplug waiting until link is established before configuring the device. They are also responsible for bring the device up and down is response to link failure and reestablishment. Normally, this is a desired behavior because it, for example, only brings up your laptop's wired connection if it is actually plugged in and automatically brings it down when you unplug. If you want to disable one or the other for a particular device, you can add !netplug or !ifplugd to the modules list of that interface (see /etc/conf.d/net.example for details). You can also disable link detection entirely by adding !plug to the modules list of that interface. An alternative that may be closer to what you want, is to let ifplugd/netplug wait for some period of time before backgrounding. This still allows the interface to be started and stopped in response to link status, but when explicitly started, it will perform configuration in the foreground if link is detecting before timeout. To establish such a timeout add:plug_timeout="" to your network configuration I tried the following in /etc/conf.d/net : modules_ath0=( "!plug" ) but it still goes into "backgrounding". When ath0 won't connect to the wireless network I need to be able to see more about what is happening when it's trying to connect. Is that still possible? - Grant -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] Firewalling and Sambra printer.
Hello, I have two computers (that are involved in this problem), phoenix is my Gentoo workstation and desktop-1 is someone else's Windows box. Someone else happens to have a printer and I don't, so, from time to time I use his printer. The printer is shared, obviously, thru SMB (it's a windows box). I configured CUPS to connect to it (I just used the KDE Kcontrol to configure it). My problem is that when I bring up my firewall (a firewall using iptables on phoenix, just protecting phoenix) printing stops working. In fact, all access to desxtop-1 thru smb stops working. The firewall is very simple, a simple stateful all-incomming-closed firewall: # iptables -vL Chain INPUT (policy DROP 35510 packets, 16M bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination 329K 558M ACCEPT all -- lo any anywhere anywhere 36M 54G ACCEPT all -- anyany anywhere anywhere state RELATED,ESTABLISHED 3 228 ACCEPT icmp -- anyany anywhere anywhere icmp echo-request limit: avg 30/min burst 5 120 7057 ACCEPT icmp -- anyany anywhere anywhere 160 ACCEPT tcp -- anyany anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssh Chain FORWARD (policy DROP 0 packets, 0 bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 21M packets, 3426M bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination phoenix ~ # Do you know why after bringing up this firewall I can't use the printer anymore and/or how to solve it ? Feeding Google with"xorg mouse protocol serial" I found (first hit): (cite): When you choose, keep in mind the following rule of thumb: 1. "Logitech" protocol is for old serial mouse models from Logitech. Modern Logitech mice use either "MouseMan" or "Microsoft" protocol. 2. Most 2-button serial mice support the "Microsoft" protocol. 3. 3-button serial mice may work with the "Mousesystems" protocol. If it doesn't, it may work instead with the "Microsoft" protocol although the third (middle) button won't function. 3-button serial mice may also work with the "Mouseman" protocol under which the third button may function as expected. 4. 3-button serial mice may have a small switch at the bottom of the mouse to choose between ``MS'' and ``PC'', or ``2'' and ``3''. ``MS'' or ``2'' usually mean the "Microsoft" protocol. ``PC'' or ``3'' will choose the "MouseSystems" protocol. 5. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel, it may be compatible with the "IntelliMouse" protocol. 6. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel and it doesn't work with the "IntelliMouse" protocol, you have to use it as a regular 2- or 3-button serial mouse. I'm missing something here. You should be able to use linebreaks; bash will, appropriately, wait for more input if you are in the middle of a larger construct (if/while/etc.). You should also be able to use spaces, but you have to add a semi-colon after each simple command. [gentoo-user] provide registration service on a headless server without web
Hello. I am running a server which currently unlike most other servers on the world, do not provide web service yet. Currently I need to allow users to register themselves. They first through a registration process get a username and password, get themselves their home directories under /home and then they can use ssh to login to the server to do a few things like search for addressbook. I think of two ideas: 1) write a script that runs on telnet port. users can run telnet, talk to the script which will ask a few questions like your fullname and username desired. If everything qualify, a user is created on the system. 2) write a web service that does the same. 1) is probably not save and 2) adds a little bit overhead and complecity of the system by adding a web service. Is there a standard registration routine I can use? That we I don't have to write my own script, which could be a security risk.
