[gep-ed] Call for Special Issue Proposals -Environmental Politics

2021-06-17 Thread 'Sikina Jinnah' via gep-ed
*Call for Proposals: Special Issue and Symposia*

*Deadline: 30 June 2021*

Dear Colleagues,

The editorial team at Environmental Politics
<https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/fenp20/current> invites proposals for a
full Special Issue (SI) or a shorter Symposium on a well-focused topic of
particular interest to the journal’s readership. Although proposals were
accepted on a rolling basis in the past, we are transitioning to an
open call for proposals twice per year.

Evaluation of proposals will be done by a committee of the Editorial
Advisory Board. The June 2021 committee will be myself (chair), David
Schlosberg, Hayley Stevenson and Matthew Paterson.

Proposals must provide the following information:

· SI or Symposium Title;

· The name, affiliation, contact details, and a short bio for proposed
Guest Editor or Editors (one paragraph each);

· A Table of Contents;

· A description of, and rationale for, the proposed SI or Symposium (500 -
1000 words). This should address its importance, contribution to
scholarship in the field, and main methodological approaches. A clear
analytical thread and sustained dialogue between papers is integral. To
that end, it is valuable to describe any workshops or collaborations that
have contributed to the proposal. Interdisciplinary dialogue and approaches
are also encouraged.

· Explanation of diversity of proposed contributions. How would the SI or
Symposium promote diversity, equity, and inclusion? In what ways would it
also address a diversity of approaches to understanding the environment or
environmental politics?

Full guidelines, including submission instructions, are available here
<https://tinyurl.com/5a8fxuus>.

I hope you will consider submitting a proposal.

[gep-ed] Call for editors - Environmental Politics

2020-07-07 Thread 'Sikina Jinnah' via gep-ed
Dear Colleagues,

*Environmental Politics* is seeking two new Editors to join our core
editorial team. We have a particular need to expand expertise from and
about world regions that have been underrepresented in the journal and
field, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America. We also aim to build
expertise around both quantitative methodologies and issues at the
intersection of race, gender, justice, and environmental politics.
Candidates who could also help maintain our strength in environmental
political theory are encouraged.

You can find the full call for applications here
<https://hsu.link/EPeditors>. We will begin reviewing applications on 15
August 2020.

Many thanks for considering.

[gep-ed] ISA panel on trade/environment politics needs a 5th paper

2016-05-11 Thread Sikina Jinnah
Dear Colleagues,

We had a late paper withdrawal from our proposed ISA panel on
trade-environment politics. If you are working in this area and are
interested in joining our panel (details below), please reply to me and
Jean-Frédéric Morin (copied here).

Thanks for considering,

Sikina (also for Jean-Frédéric)

*Panel Title:* Understanding Change in Trade Environment Politics: Adapting
the Debate to a Contemporary Empirical Landscape

*Chair:* Frank Biermann (Utrecht University)

*Discussant:* Fariborz Zelli (Lund University)

*Panel Abstract:*

Scholarship on the nexus between trade and environmental politics peaked in
the late-1990s and early 2000s in the wake of NAFTA’s (first ever)
environmental side agreement, and the WTO’s controversial dispute
settlement body decisions on issues related to sea turtle conservation and
dolphin safe tuna. The years that followed saw a dramatic loss of inertia
in WTO negotiations more-broadly. As the organization hub of
trade-environment politics, it is not surprising, therefore, that
scholarship on this topic waned in parallel. The papers that make of this
panel highlight several emergent issues in this field that warrant a
resuscitation of attention to trade-environment issues - both within the
WTO and beyond it at the regional and bilateral levels.

*Papers by:*

1) Johannes Urpelainen & Tana Johnson on the WTO-environment;

2) Huaxia Lai on TPP implications for trade and environment dispute;

3) Sikina Jinnah on the link between FTAs and MEAs;

4) Jean-Frédéric Morin, Axel Berger, Clara Brandi & Dominique Bruhn on the
implementation of PTA’s environmental provisions

5) You?

[gep-ed] Re: In-class climate simulations after Paris?

2016-03-11 Thread Sikina Jinnah
Colleagues,

Please see below for the compiled attributed responses that I received to
my recent query regarding running climate simulations post-Paris. Many
thanks for the very helpful suggestions!

>From Henrik:

This semester, I'm having my students reading up on the INDCs and then I'm
doing the C-learn model for the first time:
https://www.climateinteractive.org/tools/c-learn/
Depending on class size, there is also the larger C-roads:
https://www.climateinteractive.org/tools/c-roads/ "

>From Heike:

“I gave my students a draft version of the text (from 10 December) to
negotiate from. And then we compared what they came up with with the final
text.

>From Rado:

“ Instead of negotiating post-Paris policy, this year the simulation in my
course on global climate politics will take the Durban Platform and follow
the mandate. The disadvantage is that they already know what happened. The
advantage is that you could take them to reality after the simulation is
over and they can compare their results with Paris.”

>From Joanna L.:

“I'm actually going to run a Paris Redux simulation where they re-do the
Paris negotiations (an abridged version) and see if the results are
different, then compare them to what actually resulted. This will include
the country teams revisiting the pledged INDCs and revising them as needed.”

Ron also sent along a really great final paper assignment, which although
not a simulation, achieves many of the same empirical and analytical goals
of a simulation. In short, it asks students to “identify the positions of
several (3 to 5) countries in the negotiating group… and examine whether
their negotiating positions align with claims made in theoretical
articles.”

[gep-ed] In-class climate simulations after Paris?

2016-02-08 Thread Sikina Jinnah
Dear Colleagues,

I have been thinking about how to adjust my in-class UNFCCC simulation now
that the Paris Agreement is complete. I know there is still much to be
negotiated but I'm not sure what would be the best angle to take with
undergrads to help them really understand the politics without getting too
deep into the weeds of compliance, NDC review, etc.

Has anyone else thought through how to adapt their simulations for this
next phase? As always, I'm happy to compile off-list responses and send to
the full list.

Many thanks for any thoughts.
