Does this mean that the string is now only shown in English, but it is
not translatable? I just asking this because _marking existing strings
as translatable_ does not count as string freeze break, but of course
announcement of such fix is very nice for translators. (Also in my
understanding adding new strings, but not marking those as
translatable can be taken as string freeze break...)

It's one of those cases where _we would really like_ the string to have
been translated but we also want to respect that there is a string freeze
on and we were just a little too late.

This is a single string in a new file that makes the nautilus file browser
much easier to use for blind people when used with Orca. By doing the
reversion above, yes the string will now mean that the string will only be
in English.

I don't know of any way "to have our cake and eat it too".

If there is a better way to handle this (apart from inventing a time
machine and going back to last Thursday week), please let us know.

why don't you just ask for approval on gnome-i18n and CC the
release-team and the gnome-doc-list, as described in
http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/HandlingStringFreezes ?

chances are good that you will get approval if you explain why it's
important, and because it's still an early freeze state.

introducing a user-visible string and not marking it as translatable is
even worse, and i still consider this as a string freeze break (now
wearing my release-team hat).

however, as correctly stated by Tomas Kuliavas, the message DOES need
gettext support - for example, the czech language changes the plural
form[1] from 4 to 5, especially in this example - it is 4 věci, but 5
vecí (see the difference at the end: i vs. í).

I'm requesting a string freeze break for Orca.  The first one, which
is in src/orca/nautilus.py comes as a result of a direct request from
our user community.  It helps users understand how many items they are
working with in a folder when they open it in nautilus.  It is a
highly desired feature by our users.

The second is the result of me (my fault) forgetting to mark strings
as needing translation in our Gecko.py script for Firefox and

Yes, I confirm that GTK+ and glib are not part of the string freeze
process, even if we like to have the least new strings to translate
during this period.
We just keep the warning on gnome-i18n so as to be informed when new
strings have been added to these core modules.

useful and clear definition of "by accident", i guess.
i guess the message was not marked for translation because the developer
did not expect a language to exist that needed to change the string "%s
(%u)". so... "is ignorance also an accident?" :-)

Well, the best way to fix this is changing this to "accident or
ignorance"! Adding ignorance would cover many things (from not being
aware of something called i18n to not being aware of obscure needs of us
Persian speakers), but we may wish to find a more friendly term.

In my interpretation, it probably requires only an notification (it is
an accident, even if it was caused by ignorance).  Of course, we
always hope this is going to happen early in the cycle rather than
late (as we are now), and the idea is that we will have less of these
than "regular" freeze break requests, so they will affect us less.


But, in perspective, we might want to create "i18n evaluation team"
which will evaluate all proposed and existing modules for their i18n
compliance.

Accident is clear enough IMHO.  It's something that obviously
should have been marked for translation, but is not.

There's the problem.  It's not really ignorance if somebody
didn't mark "%s (%u)" for translation.  Nobody knows that
something like this needs to be marked for translation, because
there's no rule saying so anywhere.  It was us (Roozbeh and I
basically) that decided we are going to ask all apps to mark
their format strings for translation whenever we need to use
Persian digits somewhere.  The point being: this really needs to
be documented somehwere.  So no, it's not ignorance.  It's lack
of docuentation.

I covered that in the next paragraph ;).  No, it's not obvious.
Go ask 10 GNOME devs, 9 will tell you not...  Those who think it
should be marked for translation probably don't know about the
localized digits thing either.  Roozbeh, do you mind drafting
something about this on the wiki?

I don't think I agree.  There are more issues than just localised
digits.  Think of reordering variables, or different parentheses (as
Roozbeh mentioned).  It's not obvious to many developers, but neither
is ngettext obvious to many developers, yet it is clearly obvious to
someone with i18n background :)

since it's a sort of undesireable string concatenation.

You're right of course, but I am coming to the belief that everything
that is displayed to a normal user (vs written in logs, only saved in
config files, sent on the wire using the various protocols, etc) should
be marked for translation. "%d" and "%f" need to be marked for
translation (for users of localized digits), "," (comma) needs to be
marked for translation (for Arabic script languages), "%s" needs
to be marked for translation (for locales that don't use boldface or
prefer not to), "%s <%s>" needs to be translated (for bidi
languages), ...

As I see it, the quote from the string freeze document only applies to 
strings that don't _need_ translation. Adding a string that _should_be_ 
translated is a freeze break, even if it is not marked as translatable. 
(Accidentally not marking it is a bug, deliberately not marking it is 
jut plain rude.) That's just my interpretation after a couple of years 
of alternating between lurking and being active. (Just my NOK 0.12.)

folders, so instead of "Rename %d Files", the title will be "Rename %d
Folders".

This is important to be included in this release for consistency, as this
is the normal behavior in Nautilus. An example would be the rename popover,
which also differentiates between files and folders, so I would say that
users expect the title to be this way.

Hmm, it seems the problem is that the string was changed but the .h file
was not committed in updated form.  We don't use intltool currently for
these file because of whitespace trampling issues that dobey can explain
better than I.

What would you like us to do?  We could probably in this case just
untranslate the string.

If possible, the best solution is probably to change the message to be
identical with the already existing addressbook one:

#: addressbook/addressbook-errors.xml.h:68

#: calendar/calendar-errors.xml.h:146
msgid " Some features may not work correctly with your current server 
version "

I see no obvious reason why the calendar message should have a leading
and trailing whitespace. If those whitespaces were removed, translators
would only have to translate one such message instead of two, the
translation would automatically be reused, and there would be no string
freeze problems.

As this release might be the last in the 2.30 cycle, and as this change
would create a new module just for 2 schema strings (seldom visible to
the user), I suggest that you go ahead without setting up an i18n

If/when this goes in, can we please expand the comment with a URL that
describes the regex syntax? Even for translators who know what regular
expressions are, they might be used to another syntax than POSIX. I
guess only half of the people contributing in my team would know what
regular expressions are, and we don't want anybody to break this,
right? :-)

Better off give an example of how one would do this if sometimes the
string is translated and sometimes not.

For example su, sudo, login may be translated (to "parole" for
example), but ssh not.

We'll need to match on Parole, parole, Password, password.

Basically this string exists in an untranslated version and a translated
version and both are matched. If sudo is untranslated for example (it is
here in German locale) and su is than it still works for if you just
match the regex against "Parole/parole" in your translated string
because the english strings are always tried.

That was the same error message that was in the xine-lib backend for
close to 8 years. It's jargon-y on purpose to provide a search term for
the user, without actually pointing them at it.

We can't be certain about that, but if you feel particularly strong
about any single module, you can poke maintainers yourself. 

I'll most likely generate updated eog tarball tommorow from gnome-2-10
branch, so at least that one should get proper updates (though I see
only 4 updated translations there :).

With gnome.org/start/2.11 being moved over to Wiki[1], I now see that
it's wiser if I delay the tarball by a couple more days, since the
release itself is delayed.  So it'll up to April 10th or 11th for EOG
translations updates.

password needed". An ordinary user may ask wth is gecko. Why not use a
(hopefully) more non-geek word like 'Firefox'?

Firefox would not make sense, because the password is not really related
to the Firefox application in any way.

Perhaps using 'old' as the way to refer to the passwords. Something
like:

[ Master password required]

Your old passwords are protected by a master password; if you want to
import them, please type the master password.

Password storage has changed, and your saved passwords need to be
imported from the old storage into the new one if you want to continue
using them.

How does that sound? Someone please fix my verbosity =)

Well, I'd say "old" with no other adjective gives the wrong
impression, since the passwords are not "old" by any means :)

I think it's very much needed to say this is the Gecko (or Firefox...)
master password needed, because Epiphany/Gecko users needed to go a
bit out of their way to set it, so they probably knew what they were
doing, and otherwise it might be not totally clear to which master
password this is referring to. That's just my impression anyway.

FWIW, after some more testing I've decided it's useless to show the
g_warning string, since it's way too common and it seems to be a false
alarm, so I'm just requesting to add the dialog for now.

I've just added some more templates and made their descriptions
translatable. Well, this breaks the string freeze. But note, that all of
the added products are only available in Germany (and some of them in
France, too). That's why you haven't to think about appropriate
translations in most cases. I will do the German translation. If you are
a French translator, you could ask me for a list of the official product
names and descriptions, because all of them are sold by pearl.de and
pearl.fr.

Thanks. Now I'm still seeing some strange things. There are a bunch of
"xx_page" (cd_size_page, finish_page, ...) from
data/ui/template-designer.ui. Are you sure those strings should be
marked as translatable?

The new GTKBuilder .ui format allows for specifying markup outside of
the string itself, which is better for translators (and less
error-prone). Should be nice for a future version.

More translator comments would be welcome. For example, it's difficult
to translate msgid "Up" without explanations.

But I can't see them anywhere in the updated de.po. Last week I've
changed the filenames in POTFILES.in, and normally the mentioned things
should appear, but they don't. Did I've misunderstood something here?

There is only one new string to translate. It is a very minor release. For
releases with more strings I usually give two weeks time.

Since gbrainy is not part of the official GNOME stack, not even GNOME games,
I also do not follow GNOME schedule anyway.

I was looking at the statistics for master, not stable, so it should be

Anyway, the truth is that at the moment the stats are already really
good (so I'd already be more than happy releasing right now), with 9
translations 100% finished, 5 more around 85% and 1 on 78%, which I
consider as "almost complete", and then we have just two other
translations at 57% and 32% that would be those needing more love for
the upcoming release.

Thanks a lot for your work translating frogr. I still can hardly believe
is already translated to so many languages!

Bug 650579 is still not fixed. We need msgctxt to split that into two
strings. Is it possible to still fix it for this release?

I just have pushed some work by Pierre-Yves LUYTEN (Thanks!) who kindly
updated the user manual to match the current state of frogr (both
regarding to new/changed sections and images), which means good news for
frogr as now the user manual is correct, but bad news for translations,
since the current state of most of them has dropped down to 44%.

However I think you all will agree it's better to ship frogr with a
partly translated but correct manual than with a fully translated but
incorrect one, so I hope you won't feel desires to kill me by now :-)

I was thinking during all the week about releasing frogr 0.6 today, but
since there's actually not any hurry to do it, and considering I just

wait some more days (deadline next friday) to give you time to update
them, in case you want to do it and it's feasible.

Otherwise, as I said before, frogr 0.6 will be shipped as it is now and
we'll have plenty of time to complete the translations fro the next
release, or even in an intermediate one.

ekiga is not a part of official GNOME release, hence no string freeze
for you.
