libgncmod-app-utils.dll was renamed to libgnc-app-utils.dll in GnuCash 4.x so

It seems unlikely that Windows updates would have anything to do with it.

As Geert mentioned back in November, the uninstaller doesn't always get
everything. That may be because its manifest is incomplete or because the file
in question is left over from a previous installation whose uninstaller has
been removed.

I just checked the registry and user directory on my Windows VM for mentions of
libgnc-app-utils or libgncmod-app-utils and found nothing, so I think that both
you and Ms. Hargis must have artifacts from previous installations on your
system. Please try the following:

Uninstall GnuCash using Apps and Features (right-click on the start icon, it's
the first item in the menu).
Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to Local Disk (C:) > Program Files
(x86). Delete the gnucash directory if there is one.
If you have ever installed GnuCash to some other location check that as well
and make sure that the gnucash directory is deleted. If you're not sure about
that use Windows File Explorers search to search all disks for libgnc*.dll.
Delete any that you find.
Empty the trash.
Install GnuCash 4.4.

FWIW - I have found that the free version of Revo Uninstaller does a
good job of removing a windows program.  In addition, take a look at
CCleaner as well for further clean up.  My experience with these free
versions has been trouble free.  That said, there can be no guarantees
when things get all twisted up.  A choice for finding files on Windows
is a free program called Everything.  I have no connection to any of
these programs.  nvsoar

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-28 Thread David Cousens
Laurel,

If you haven't tried it already, Geert's strategy of deleting the complete
folder C:/Program Files(X86)/guncash before doing a reinstall from a fresh
download from the GnuCash website (with the antivirus turned off while doing
the download and install) is going to be worth a try as that will remove all
traces of any program files associated with the previous install. You will
need to have or invoke administrator privileges to do this however. Geert
(along with John Ralls and Derek Atkins) is one of the main GnuCash
developers so their advice is usually based on a farmore intimate knowledge
of GnuCash than most of us have.

It may help if you can feedback here what happens when you try any of the
suggested approaches. It is a bit tedious but we cannot see what is
happening on your computer including any printout of what comes up on the
screen during the install. A screen capture program can be useful to record
this. Alt- PrtScn will capture the active window and PrtScn alone will
capture the whole screen to the clipboard in WIndows. You can then post the
clipboard into a file and then upload the file by attaching it to your email
(or if you are using Nabble the More Button will give you an upload button
to attach the file).

Peter,

technicians with some Windows experience. Very risky as David Carlson
pointed out to share screens aside from the problems of different time zones
since we don't know in which country Laurel is located. Laurel would have

Sorry, I should have tried following that link before posting it. It is
for member organizations only, but they don't reveal that fact until a
lowly member of a local computer group tries to follow it. I belong to

That would be great if there was no risk that a bad person might jump at
that opportunity.

I would suggest first that she find a friend or relative to help, or even
to contact her local library to look for help.

There is an International Association of Technology and Computer User
Groups APCUG which is an umbrella organization for local computer user
groups. They have a link apcug2.org/locate-a-user-group/ where she might
find a local group.

If she finds a group, the risk of compromise by a single malefactor goes
down a notch.

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-27 Thread Geert Janssens
When uninstalling an reinstalling, be sure to remove directory
C:\Progam Files(x86)\gnucash
In between uninstalling and reinstalling.

We have encountered situations in the past where not all files from that
directory got properly removed which could lead to the error you are seeing.

Additionally, you may want to temporarily disable your anti-virus software
during the installation. That is also known to sometimes interfere with a
succesful install.

Regards, Geert

Sorry to hear that. Does GnuCash actually become available? If so, maybe
try to right-click on the file and then select "Open" instead of
double-clicking it . Also temporarily disable any anti-virus you may have
installed ( some will not allow unknown executables to run). If none of
this works, I would have to assume that the installation is corrupt and
would need a fresh download and installation. Do you get any error messages
at all?
Cheers

Have you tried Greg's suggestion? An easy way to check if GnuCash starts
from the command, copy and paste the following into the Windows 10 search
box (the magnifying glass icon on the bottom left of your screen)
"C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe" (without the quotes). This
will bring up the GnuCash executable. which if you double-click on it will
start GnuCash - or not.

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-26 Thread Greg Feneis
Perhaps if GnuCash could be started by navigating to the actual
executable file and double clicking on it. This would bypass concerns with
failed file associations, broken shortcuts, etc. If successful, at the
very worst, it should start and complain that it can't find the working
file it used to know.

EG: My GnuCash 2.6.21 installation is found by opening windows explorer and
typing this into the address bar.
C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin (then press enter)
In the list of files that shows up, I can see gnucash.exe If I double
click on this file's icon, GnuCash starts and runs.
My GnuCash version is several updates old, so Laurel's may be in a slightly
different place. If she could find it, she could start the program directly
from the executable and let us know what happens.
Failing that, Laurel may be able to navigate to the same location via
command prompt and start GnuCash with debug logging enabled in some verbose
fashion. Someone else will have to chime in with details on whether and
how it's possible.

Kind regards,

Greg Feneis

There's one in that location on v2.6.21 though, which suggests perhaps an
issue with a report designed to run under an older version that needs
reconfiguring for 4.2.

losing 10 months of work although I’m told the files are in there
somewhere.

a) Not knowing how to find your gnucash data file(s) is a different
problem. More related to being able to use Windows tools. If we told you
extremely likely that the name of your gnucash file(s) ends with the
file extension .gnucash do you know how to use Windows Explorer to find
such files? In other words, if you don't know how to ask Windows "show
me all files ending in .xyz" your problem is not specific to gnucash.

b) A desktop shortcut not working is not the same as program not
working. Referring to "a" above, are you able to find the file
"gnucash.exe" on your computer. What happens when you click to open that
file? If that opens gnucash for you, do you know how to create a
shortcut to that on your desktop. Again, those are "using Windows"
matters, not gnucash matter.

Michael D Novack

PS -- I am NOT wanting to appear snide, just that your problem may be
more "needing to have using Windows support". Do you have, for example,
a "Windows 10 for Dummies" book?  (or one for whatever version of
Windows you are using). Please note that my wife would be helpless in
the same situation you are reporting. She. for example, could not use
explorer to find a file or create a shortcut to something. Luckily she
has a resident support person.

By "old version of gnu" do you mean an old version of the GnuCash
application? Have you got two different versions of GnuCash installed at
the same time? Not sure if this is possible at all but if this could
probably cause issues...

Or did you just mean opening an old version of your data file?

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-26 Thread Derek Atkins

Hi Lauren,
Sorry you are having these issues.
I presume you are installing the official gnucash package that you
downloaded from the links off www.gnucash.org?
Can you manually uninstall what you have installed, download the package
again, and reinstall it?
As others have said, there are many happy windows users, so it sounds like
something got corrupted on your system.

A full uninstall and reinstall should correct that.
Good luck!

You could leave windows without leaving windows
Gnucash (please note that this is the correct name, not "gnu") runs on
other operating systems. I'm not proposing that you buy a Mac, but
thinking of you installing a Linux version in a virtual machine,
putting Gnucash on that, copying your data over and using that.

It does sound like a lot of work, but you have already spent many hours
trying to get things usable.

I'm sorry you're having these troubles. Many windows users (myself included)
are successfully using gnucash on windows. A search online showed several very
old email threads with this error; however, they were from users of a
repackaged version of Gnucash from a group called portableapps.

actual user name on the computer for the placeholder in the
above path. Copy all files in that location onto a USB stick or other
medium before attempting a reinstall of Windows. You will then be able to
restore your user data files from the USB stick if you do have to do a
Windows reinstall and reinstall all programs. That should prevent any loss
of data stored in the GNuCash files.

GnuCash 4.2 should not be looking for that file in that location which may
suggest that the initial install of GC 4.2 has perhaps not completely
removed all files from a previous version (which it should do during the
install procedure) and that an outdated dll file is being accessed and in
turn is looking for a routine in a dll which no longer exists. AFAIK there
have been some rewrites of the GnuCash library files recently which could
lead to this.

You could also try making sure any subsequent Windows updates are installed
and that Windows 10 itself is fully up to date.

Try manually removing GnuCash using the Control Panel programs tab before
reinstalling GnuCash from a fresh download of 4.2. If old files have not
been removed properly this may unload them.

If that doesn't work I would then try reinstalling the version you had
previously and see if it works Doing a manual uninstall of the previous
version from the control panel after a reinstall of the old version should
then get rid of any previous program files which may have been left in
place. Then follow that by reinstalling GC 4.2.

snip - I support the above approach suggested by David Cousens. FWIW - I
use the Revo Uninstaller because I found that the Windows uninstaller
still leaves stuff hanging around.  As for file finding I use an
application called Everything that indexes all windows files - much
faster than Windows search.  (Links are

Laurel,

Uninstalling and reinstalling the Windows 10 system should be a last resort.

*Before you do that, at least make a copy of all the data files in your user
directory either on a USB stick or a copy to another computer*. *Don't let a
technician reinstall it without doing this first*. Your user files will be
stored in C:/Users// where you will need to substitute your

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread David Carlson
Laurel,

It has been my experience on Windows that old shortcuts never work after
updates. I always need to let the update create a new shortcut. That
would be doubly true after updating to GnuCash 4.2 as it changes many
things 'under the hood'

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread laurel hargis
Adrien- gnu doesn’t launch when I click on it. I only get the error
message.

I do believe when it originally gave me trouble I was able to see an
account “tree” with balances but not able to work in the application. After
that I updated to 4.2 and now nothing happens.

Should I try installing the old version again?

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread laurel hargis
Perhaps the Windows 10 update didn’t cause the problem. Maybe coincidence.
But, all I did was try to open my OLD version of gnu on desktop to record
some entries. I got the message I referred to that stays on my screen
whenever for either version. I only installed 4.2 after the problem
occurred as I read was recommended as a possible fix. Plus I can’t access
my files from the desktop icon (existing from before 4.2 install) to do any
work. When I uninstall gnu I don’t have the message but still don’t know
how to find my files or work on them. That’s why I’m concerned about
losing 10 months of work although I’m told the files are in there
somewhere. I’ve been told by 3 IT techs the only other thing I can do is
reinstall the operating system (and have to reinstall all existing
programs). Umm, no, not doing that. Everything else on my computer works
fine.

I do appreciate your concern and help.

I saw someone told me to report as a big on a blog. I guess I’ll try that
tomorrow?

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread A Harvey
Have you tried re-installing an older version to ascertain whether it is
just a 4.2 problem? In the past, I've occasionally encountered problems
with some versions of Gnucash that would not run, regardless of what I
tried, on one of three systems using identical versions of Windows but
installed on different hardware. I don't usually bring it up on the list
as only one system will be affected for a given version and the problem
goes away in later versions of Gnucash.

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread David Cousens
Adrien, Laurel

I have just downloaded GnuCash 4.2 and installed it on my wife's Windows 10
box and it appears to be working OK. I checked "C:/Program
Files(X86)/gnucash/bin" and there is no "libgncmod-app-utils.dll" in that
location. I can open registers and create new transactions without any
problems, so the problem appears not to be a general problem with GnuCash
4.2 on WIndows 10. I have not checked all functionality however. It is
hard to understand why a Windows10 update would cause a problem locating a
dll which does not appear to exist in a working GnuCash program on Windows
10 unless the call is in an obscure part of the program and is not called
normally and is trying to access a routine that has now been moved to
another library. No other reports of problems with 4.2 on Windows 10 other
than the crash fault on Oct22-25 which AFAIK was fixed around Oct 25. I fear
this is one where John's expertise is likely needed

Laurel,

We will need as much detail as possible about what happens from when you try
to start GnuCash until you encounter the problem and as much detail as
possible about what you were actually doing when you encountered the problem
as per Adrien's previous post.

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread David Carlson
Laurel,

I sympathise with W10 issues, my wife had to get a new laptop when her W10
laptop went south. If you do need to reinstall W10, you would have to
first be sure that you have a copy of your data file somewhere not on your
local hard drive. Same, of course, for all your other personal data files
that you don't want to lose. If you can still boot W10 that will be easier
than using a rescue USB boot key as my wife needs to do.

Good Luck

Re: [GNC] entry point error after recent automatic windows 10 update

2020-11-25 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Your data files aren't a loss. They are separate from the app. (Not sure
why you think you'd lose 10 months of data entry.)

This sounds like one for the developers. Maybe they'll see this thread
and take a look.

What will help more is filing a bug report on bugs.gnucash.org. (you'll
need to create an acccount first)

Does the app crash or simply not launch? That wasn't clear from your
original post. The devs will need to know what happened and the order of
events (specific clicks and actions) to re-create this so they can track
down a cause.

It still may be a Windows issue, but they will be able to determine if
it is GnuCash at fault.

In a worst case, there are options to still run GnuCash albeit in a
round-a-bout way to access your data. It would be better to try to solve
this first. If the cause is with Windows, you may end up with other
problems with other apps down the road.

About

GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical
computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving
linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other
numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with
Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language.

Octave has extensive tools for solving common numerical linear algebra
problems, finding the roots of nonlinear equations, integrating ordinary
functions, manipulating polynomials, and integrating ordinary differential
and differential-algebraic equations. It is easily extensible and
customizable via user-defined functions written in Octave’s own language,
or using dynamically loaded modules written in C++, C, Fortran, or other
languages.

GNU Octave is also freely redistributable software. You may redistribute it

Uninstalling the app should not affect your financial data files (or even
the user preference files). They are totally separate from the actual
program files. The first will be stored in whatever location you chose in
your user home directory when you first created them and the preference
files are also in a separate location. The Gnucash guide section on
migrating files

2020-11-23 Thread laurel hargis

I will let you know more answers tomorrow after a call back from Microsoft
to see their recommendation.

Thank you so much for your attention.

This appears to be a problem accessing a DLL file . If it really is looking
in the path " C\Program Files(x86)\nucash\bin\" and not "C\Program
Files(x86)\gnucash\bin", it is likely there is a fault somewhere in the
build and installation process in which case it will be important to
identify exactly which version of GnuCash is being installed the specific OS
it is being installed on and whether it is installed from a normal Windows
10 install or using a Flathub install. If it is not finding the

If there is any identifying information for the specific update which caused
the fault this may help the developers track down the problem. You may need
to wait until John Ralls comes on line. AFAIK John handles the Windows 10
builds so it is likely he may be able to track it down.
