[Goa's Pride goa-world.com, Apr 28] This beautifully underlines the need for mobilising public opinion on issues of vital importance to Goa. [Goanet]The Wisdom of Crowds
Freds candle appears to have drawn some new faces into Goanets Living Room! However, unlike newspapers where the editorial policy illumines what types of candles can be brought into and lit at Goanet, everyone is encouraged to bring and light their own candles. Over the years, we have seen all kinds of candles take the stand. Some so small, they only highlight the label authenticating Place of Origin. Others so tall, they keep spiders awake 24/7. And there are some that give out more smoke than light, or laboriously fluctuate between emitting white smoke and black smoke. And there are some that get easily blown away and others quite the contrary. Occasionally, a candle becomes inflated on arrival and subsequently so oversized that you cant get it out the door, and have no other recourse but to wait for it to burn its course. Even less occasionally, a candle gets glaringly out of control and requires someone from the Goanet Admin team to have it towed away! This does not mean that those who are silent, or who habituate in the more obscure parts of the Goanet household have no candles of their own. They certainly do, and when they do come out, their light is so overwhelming that those who find themselves on the receiving end of the illumination, swiftly wish they had gone about the household like sacristans with a brass extinguisher on a pole rather than in their self-anointed, stretchable miters! On the other hand, if everyone lit a candle, we may end up with too much light, summoning the need to pull down the blinds or reach for goggles and in that creepy setting, bump into the very ones we had contemptuously sworn ourselves never to run into! [Goanet]TOWARDS A NEW SOCIETY
TOWARDS A NEW SOCIETY "Education should lead students to critical thinking and acquisition of values" - said Fr. Felix Koikara, delivering the keynote address at the three day Faculty Enrichment Programme at St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, held recently, with the them "Towards a New Society". Mr. Lucindo Faria, the Managing Director of Lagoa Azul Resort and alumnus of the College, presided as the Chief Guest. The Principal, Prof. Newman Fernandes welcomed and introduced the Chief Guest and the resource person - Fr. Felix Koikara. He stressed that each one of us is a component of the society and change has to begin with oneself, which can bring about a wholesome change in the society. The Chief Guest recollected his nostalgic memories of College life and said that what students remember of teachers, is not what they taught as subject teachers but their personality and character. The resource person, Fr. Felix Koikara, in his keynote address, stressed that Man is a Mystery and to say that one is expert at any subject concerning human beings, is indeed foolish. He said that the programme schedule would focus on 3 ideas - acquisition of knowledge, acquisition of skills and building new attitudes. He also highlighted that teachers are facilitators in inculcating values in students. The session began with the reflection exercise wherein teachers were given a questionnaire which provided an opportunity for short reflection on one's own values and ideas about value education. The questionnaire also focused on the role of teachers in imparting values and the need for a clear value system for students. The next session saw the introduction of the personal and professional value housie game card. Each teacher was given one value for self and a game card containing 24 professional and personal values. Each teacher had to ask the other teachers with different values to sign in the respective box on the game card. The session was interesting and interactive and was enjoyed by all the participants. The teachers were further asked to identify 10 values from the 24 values on the game card which they considered the most important and rank them on a scale from 1 to 5. The participants were then asked to give reasons for the choice of the first three important values. The teachers were divided into groups of 8 to 9 members and each group was asked to draw a profile of a true professional teacher. The profile made by each group was integrated to have a consensus. The following was the value consensus profile: Belief in God, Character, Self confidence, Love, Dynamism, Cooperation, Justice, Knowledge, Hardwork and Honesty. Each teacher made a self evaluation with respect to each of the 10 profile values on scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is weak and 5 is strong. Each teacher was made to identify their weak points and strengthen them. On the second day Fr. Felix Koikara discussed the value crisis faced by the young generation during adolescence. He made a mention of how media portrays a hypothetical world of infidelity and beauty which leads them to choose undesirable values. He also stressed on the teachers' role in promoting values among students and the various alternative methods like trial and error, reward and punishment, nagging and others were discussed. It was found that each method has its own drawbacks. Hence value clarification approach gained importance. He said that value is a stance that the self takes to the total environment as expressed through its behaviour, ideas, body, feelings and imagination. The process of valuing has 7 criteria which can be divided into 3 categories - choosing, prizing and acting. After the tea break the participants were given a simple appreciation exercise titled "The Gift You Are". Each teacher was made to describe 5 most important characteristics, behaviours and attitudes that their friends and peers would judge were the guiding principles of their lives and from which they drew inspiration and would strive to emulate. The teacher was also asked to identify the underlying values. This exercise stressed that we need to take time to appreciate ourselves and only then can we learn to appreciate others. The afternoon session dealt with an introspective exercise on social justice. This questionnaire highlighted the many evils in society that create gender bias and discrimination. The resource person stressed on the need to be aware of our rights and to be actively involved in preserving them and fighting against the violations. This was followed by another session on 'marriage and the choice of an ideal life partner'. The main objective of this exercise was to decide on the qualities of an ideal life partner (spouse) and to reflect on the qualities the spouse expects from me. Since marriage is fraught with difficulties, uncertainties and demands a continuous process of adjustment, it is important that one choses one's life part

[Goanet]In the defence of Gilbertian Defence Scams!
According to the affidavit, the ministry has so far been able to scrutinise its files for five transactions carried out on the pretext of the Kargil war. Findings on all but the tgm transaction have been made available to Tehelka. It turns out that three of these four transactions had been cleared DIRECTLY by the then Defence Minister George Fernandes and in all three cases serious procedural lapses were noted. The transactions date to the period after the Kargil conflict began in May 1999. At the time the defence ministry, with Fernandes approval, issued an order envisaging modifications in the procurement procedure applicable for the duration of Operation Vijay for items specifically required for OP Vijay. The contract for ammunition for t-72 tanks was signed in June 1999 at a cost of Rs 116.83 crore. Files relating to this deal revealed that the said ammunition was in production by the Ordnance Factory and hence there was NO NEED to import ammunitions. However, by placing reliance on the Kargil conflict, a proposal was mooted to buy the ammunitions for Kargil. The RM (Raksha Mantri) has approved the purchase for ammunition 02.07.1999 in view of the prevailing circumstances. According to the cag report, t-72 tanks could not have been deployed at high altitudes. The case has been recommended to the cbi. Similarly with regard to the Rs 402.76-crore ammunition contract approved by Fernandes, the pre-delivery inspection was waived. No formal request for proposal was issued, which is contrary to usual practice. Moreover, Kargil and OP Vijay became the reason for import of this ammunition. It is clear that the supplier delivered old ammunition. Further, the files have revealed that the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (dgqa) had approved/certified the ammunitions stating that they had residual shelf life of three years, even though the ammunition was very old and their shelf life and (sic) already expired by that time. The said inspection of dgqa is very suspect one. This case has also been referred to the cbi. [Goanet]Re: What are we fighting for...
Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful response. The subject of social capital is new to me (as is the phenomenon of mailing lists!) though I am familiar with the term "intellectual capital" and assume there is something similar. But I agree it would be worth building and hence I will try to help in any way I can. For starters I would point out that in your post you seemed to emphasise "process", that it is not easy, no fool proof ways, not visible etc and then suddenly popped the issue of "content" viz negative social capital! Also, is social capital tied in some way to our (competing!) concepts of "Goa" to which you alluded at the start of your post? So we seem to have both a squishy content and a squishy process on our hands! I guess it makes for "interesting times" in the Chinese sense. Regarding the eyeballs built up over the years, it would be interesting to have some figures about this (aside from the word that there are 7000-plus goanetters out there). What we probably want to focus on the "fingers" which take the trouble to post on goanet (assuming one finger typing like mine!), whether they are increasing or decreasing each month, how many are new to goanet etc. Finally, pls call me Phil as "prof" makes me uncomfortable!

Which newspaper in the UK is pro-Labour ?? GABE: Manmohan of India, has rescinded the move to apply value added tax on Diesel fuel, he saw Bush's embrace of the Saudi Prince and thought; hey, thank God for this Gay President. RESPONSE: Err...Marioweak argument - Bush can be accused of interfering in Iraq's affairs. Nahi challega mein !! MARIO: if "all" that the US is interested in is oil, then why did they leave all that oil and return home in 1991, when they had total control of Kuwaiti oil and could have taken all the Iraqi oil as well. Consumers have helpedand since most world economies have survived almost unscathe for so long with such high prices, expect the sheiks to continue licking their lips to the sound of "ka-ching", "ka-ching". All that extra cash should find it's way to keep the job unemployment data low in the US defence industry. Go figure!! In 1991, US policy mandated that it appear as "liberator", freedom-fighter - all this in the immediate post-communism period. In 2001, US policy mandated assertive interference. 9/11 was incidental to this policy, not a precursor or result of it. It's only incidental that somebody named Bush was President at both times. The President has got to do, what the President has got to do - follow US policy in the interests of the US. You are one of those who want to have it both ways. You have been castigating Bush for liberating Iraq from a brutal dictator, who is credited with being responsible for the deaths of over a million Iraqis, Iranis and Kuwaitis, then you turn around and demand that he interfere in another country's affairs by demanding parity in terms of practising religion in Saudi Arabia. Then you jump to your other facetious claim that "all" that Bush is interested in is oil, while the fact is that the US is less dependent on middle-east oil than several major European and far eastern countries, and if "all" that the US is interested in is oil, then why did they leave all that oil and return home in 1991, when they had total control of Kuwaiti oil and could have taken all the Iraqi oil as well.
[Goanet]Re: Wisdom of crowds - another perspective
All, Every now and then Fred raises the issue of silent goanetters and social capital. I believe he is genuinely interested in both and cannot think of any other cyberGoan who is more e-involved. As far as silent goanetters, I presume most are adults and will speak for themselves if they find the need to. They are probably the same who were silent in class, don't speak up at work or other public places. That's fine. At a personal level their silence may be costing them a promotion in the workplace or a good grade at the university. As long as no one is putting a gun to their head to be silent, I don't see a problem here although it would be simply nice to hear from them. Regarding social capital (or social deficit), I suppose it happens. Like branches on a tree, it grows inspite of our intentions. Perhaps there is a way to cultivate it, but I would not loose any sleep over this. Regards, George

Viviana, My suggestion was aimed mainly at those who have not written here yet. However, if this is going to start the ball rolling, here is the reason we named our baby ELORA DAWN LOBO My wife and I decided to give our girl names that would: 1) Rhyme with the surname Lobo. 2) Give meaning to the surname (wolf.) 3) Be easy to holler, when calling her in for dinner. Her middle name, Dawn, was an easy choice. My name is difficult for Tanzanians to pronounce and most of them butcher it. Thus I tell them, Call me anything you want, but dont call me early in the morning. Keeping this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to name the baby early in the morning :-) Arriving at the first name was more of a challenge. We looked up all, and I mean all, the names in English, Swahili, Konkani, French and Spanish and we could not agree on a name. Desperate, we consulted Cecil Pintos name da baby service. While Cecil came up with a few good ideas, he was unaware of the ex list of names that where not permissible. We were coming down to the wire when the name Elora was suggested. Elora Gorge is a scenic/fishing/camping spot close to Toronto. The entire gorge is a peaceful quite place, with mist rolling thru it in the morning. This is where I took my wife fishing on our first date in Canada. This is also the place, I am now told, that she decided to reel me in.. Mervyn3.0 __ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca

[Goanet]Cafeteria Catholics and Cafeteria Goans
Hi Bosco: Here are some responses to many points raised in several posts. I reply to one logic (train of thought) and the other zings me from a different direction. Usually your posts are pretty sensible and unlike other posts there is consistency i.e.. rarely do they talk from sides of the mouth. However your comments baffle me right from the go. Here is your first statment. >I concede it could be unfortunate for "the kids" but tell us what is "wrong" And you go on to blame the church for annulling the divorced marriage. So I will save myself from trying to respond to the rest of your comments because I do not see a consistent perspective, but rather random thoughts which make it difficult to know whether you are for or against cafeteria (anything). Please you and others who are so inclined suggest to your own family that let's switch to cafeteria rules in your home from tomorrow. In two weeks perhaps you can end this sterile / theoretical debate by telling us your experience. Should I put a smiley face and give you that as an option / wriggle room? To Santosh: A fanatic / fundamentalist in my view may be going against the second commandment of Jesus (the first commandment was from Moses) which is: Love your neighbor as thyself. To Mario's question: If we all were pure /rigid Catholics we would be Saints. But we are not. But at least we should try. When we fail, we should be guilty of our failure. A cafeteria person thinks it is his/her right to go a la carte in the cafeteria with his/her own menu. He/She is on the pulpit saying look at me. And the rest of us say, "Smart Person or Great Chef.":=)) To George's and Bosco's questions about reforms. Nothing wrong with reform. But just practical experience in USA tells me that by most parameters, the practice of religion and Catholicism has declined post-reform. And some of the ones promoting reform IMHO appear to do so just to show their shallow interest and loyalty. George fits this category especially after making a great case during the election of the Pope. I pointed this about-face, so I will not repeat it again. As far as women priests, the women have ample opportunities to serve Christ, which is the fundamental reason to be a priest or nun. In the past women have done a splendid job of serving Christ and like men, the Church has awarded them with Sainthood. Today, unfortunately not enough women or men have vocations. And that to me is the biggest issue which women-priest will not address. It is my understanding that there is a greater interest / calling to join Mother Theresa order in the USA than to join the priesthood or other nunneries, which are far ahead in comfort and everything else that is worldly. IMHO changing the liturgy to native language has helped the average catholic and the church. Beyond that very little in the reforms has helped religion including the church being lax in the garb that nuns and priests wear. There are the unintended consequences of reforms that none of the pro-reformers seen to understand or care. Change for the sake of change results in, "I concede divorce could be unfortunate for the kids but tell us what is wrong" attitude. Regards "Bosco D'Mello" Gilbert Lawrence wrote: > Being a non-cafeteria Catholic or a non-cafeteria Goan does not make one a > fanatic. There is nothing wrong with being and staying married and going to > Sunday Church. There is something wrong with being divorced. Ask the kids. +++ I concede it could be unfortunate for "the kids" but tell us what is "wrong" with being divorced. And don't preach from a moral pulpit!! This is the 21st century!! Be practical !! The Catholic Church itself has annulled thousands of marriages.
[Goanet]Welfare of the aged retired tiatrists
Welfare of the aged retired tiatrists If anyone thinks about death which may come at any moment. I think surely no one would like to create enemity among ourselves. In my dramatic career I have acted, sung and composed numerous songs. I am proud of myself to do so. But I would like to tell my fellow tiatrist a death is waiting for us, which will end every part of our life, what remains is whatever good you do in this world to others, where you will always be remembered by the masses. Now coming to Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha. This sonvstha was formed by a few dedicated tiatrists for the benefit of the aged and retired tiatrists. Till date these few tiatrist have worked for eight hours at their workplace and another 4 hours they have worked for the old and retired tiatrists begging with every Goans who love the art of tiatr, for helping our tiatrists back at home, tell me my Kuwait Goan brothers are these tiatrists wrong in any way??? I salute them as the President of this Sonvstha. God has given power to the devil to create evil among mankind, which the devil is all set to do. The Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha is in the forefront with their hard work and sweat, they are all out to work for our needy brothers back at home. They have created history among any organization in Kuwait and the cheats and selfish people do not like the good work being done for others, their jealous motives will see the end soon. Devache bodiec avaz assonam After every show this sonsvtha sends money to these needy tiatrist for which the needy tiatrist are most grateful to the Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha. We should not boast about ourselves but pray to the Almighty creator to give us strength understanding and good faith to carry on with the good work. An open letter was addressed to me by one Comedian Ben maybe a year ago. I would like to tell you Ben we at KGTS work for unity among Goan tiatrists and every Goan who loves tiatr art is welcome to this fold and we are not for division. Your open letter to me had no meaning cause whatever you had written on that open letter had no sense. Learn to earn your leaving for eight hours with hard work and than teach others your doctrine. We at KGTS are working and sweating for eight hours and even after our hard days works we are thinking about our needy tiatrist in Goa, our motherland. I have come to know about your evil thinkings on KGTS. God forbid one day you may need this sonvstha, of which you are ill thinker, dont get carried away by evil. For your information I have seen in front of my eyes young tiatrists like Francis de Parra, Bernand de Aldona, Bab Peter, Young Mendes who were wonderful singers bloomed and faded away. May God grant their souls eternal rest. Pride has a fall which I want you to remember always, you say Jesus loves you, but on the other hand you are trying to create evil. You cannot serve two masters at one time, either honour the Almighty God the creator of mankind or serve your true master that is the devil. Please come to your senses Ben because one day we all surely have to die. May the Almighty help us to work in the right direction. LONG LIVE KGTS LONG LIVE GOA. At a supermarket everything is neatly organised and you can get exactly what you want. In a bazaar everything is noisy and messy and prices can always be negotiated. There's plenty of heat and dust and loud noises. Perhaps GoaNet is like a noisy bazaar? It is as important as a supermarket. And definitely more colourful and exciting. [Goanet]MARG to protest for policy on transport & traffic situation in Goa
- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ --- - MARG to hold sit-in protest on May 19 - The Movement for Amity towards Roads in Goa (MARG) has decided to hold a sit-in protest in Panaji on May 19, pressing for the need to formulate a proper policy on transport and traffic situation in state. Addressing a gathering of activists at Curchorem, the MARG convenor, Mr Gurunath Kelekar warned the administration that no cosmetic measures would serve the purpose of arresting road accidents and usher in discipline among road users. "A proper rational policy needs to be formulated and the people need to be taken into confidence," he said. Mr Kelekar charged all the past governments of having behaved in the most brutal and callous manner in this connection. Mr Kelekar felt that it was time for NGOs like MARG to come forward and accept the challenge. It was decided that MARG after the day-long dharna at Panaji would submit a memorandum to the authorities pointing out the 302 deaths reported on Goan roads, last year. The meeting further decided to make an appeal to senior officers in the state administration pertaining to roads including the Collectorate, PWD, transport, traffic, health and the municipality to personally interact with the citizens, where it is possible, on road transport issue. Mooting the need for rules and regulations to govern bicycle riders, MARG resolved to request municipal authorities in the state to immediately introduce some set of rules and regulations for safety of riders and pedestrians. It also demanded immediate action over the issue of roadside hoardings, which distract the attention of the drivers. Appreciating the work undertaken by the PWD of widening roads, blacktopping, channelising and marking of highways, the MARG called upon the authorities to install proper road signals which are badly needed. The former deputy superintendent of police (traffic), Mr Gurudas Juwarkar and Dr Tanaji Harlankar along with Mr Shailesh Sansgiri were among those who spoke on the occasion. -- The Navhind Times 28/4/05 page 5 -- --- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK --- an initiative of GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE to promote civic and consumer rights in Goa --- GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goacan.org ---

[Goanet]Sporting Clube hit by injuries
Sporting Clube hit by injuries April 28, 2005 16:57 IST Sporting Clube De Goa's aspirations to clinch their maiden National Football League title suffered a blow after their in-form players Edeh Chidi and Joseph Pereira raced against time to be fit for Friday's match against Vasco. The two players suffered ankle injuries during the match against Tollygunge and are doubtful starters against Vasco. "It is a deliberate attempt to injure our key players so as to keep the Goan teams out of the title," Sporting Clube President Peter Vaz said on Thursday. "The injuries to Chidi and Joseph Pereira are a major concern as both are doubtful starters. The return of Medio Adebayo Adwusi and defender Vincent Peres will add solidity to the team, who need to win this crucial match to be in stay for the title along with East Bengal and Dempo", he said. Vaz, however, made it clear that his team would go all out to win tomorrow's match. "Vasco's confidence has been raised after their win against Fransa Pax and they will be going all out to win their remaining matches to keep their hopes alive. Our boys are prepared for it and will go all out for a win," Vaz said. Sporting at 39 points from 19 matches are on par with East Bengal, and are placed on top of the league table for having scored more number of goals than East Bengal. Dempo are a close third with 38 points from 18 matches. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/
[Goanet]Baina beach needs urgent attention
- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ --- --- Baina beach needs urgent attention -- The Baina beach of Vasco needs urgent attention from the state administration. Due to the flesh trade, which stopped after evacuation and demolition of sex cubicles, it was totally neglected by the citizens. However, post-demolition it is slowly buzzing with people's presence and could be developed as one of the major tourist spots in Goa.Cultural programmes and other social activities were held soon after the evacuation, however, the pace of holding such programmes has slowed down considerably. The Mormugao Municipality had planned various projects for the upgradation of this beach, but none of those could be materialised due to unstable council. When this reporter contacted some of the citizens on the beautification issue, they opined that this is possible only with the combined efforts of citizens as well as the concerned authorities. A senior journalist and an employee of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Mr Shyam Kaskar stated that the beach has been neglected and needs beautification. He further said that after the demolition of the cubicles the beach was opened for public and some organisations arranged entertainment events. But thereafter it has remained idle most of the time, he added. Mr Kaskar said the government and the local authorities should motivate the social and cultural organisations to hold entertainment programmes. "If the open area is not developed immediately, again the slums and other illegal structures will come up with the blessings of politicians and nobody will stop them," he observed adding such things happened in the past at Mangor Hill as well as at Baina. A young businessman, Mr Narayan Surlkar stated, "The Baina beach, our only prized possession was in the clutches of our dreaded politicians and corporators who helped to develop it as a commercial sex centre for vote bank." "We are thankful for the efforts of social organisations, dynamic citizens, besides the Bombay High Court's Goa bench in particular for its landmark judgment," he added. The beautification of Baina beach will bring in lot of tourists and it will be like a boon to the people of Vasco for their evening walks and their other social gatherings, he said. The cleaning and beautification process will go a long way in bringing Vasco on the tourist map of India. The people displaced due to this process should be given rightful alternate accommodation or land. When contacted, Ms Balika Chodankar, a 62-year-old woman from Sasmolem-Baina, said the beach is a must for bathing during the summer as the people get reprieve from certain diseases. She also said that the concerned authorities should take care of the beach. I am also not sure what social capital is being built. But, hey, good luck with the efforts! Frankly, neither am I very sure, Prof Thomas. But then, building social capital isn't a very easy job. From my understanding, there is no fool-proof way of doing it. One never knows when one is getting there... or whether the 'social capital' being built is of a negative kind! We are to go to the elections on 5th May 2005 here in the U.K. Although it is widely assumed that the Labour Party will get in once again, it is hoped that the British voters will show their disdain to the Iraq War which was illegal. It is intended that the voters will deliver a bloody rebuke. P.M. Tony Blair misled Cabinet, Parliament and the People in his quest to ride with President Bush. [Goanet]Foreign Tourists (TOI)
Today's TOI had a graphic about state-wise foreign tourists in 2003. Goa with 314 thousand is placed 8th neck and neck with Kerala with 295 thousand. Immediately ahead is AP with 479 thousand. The demand for foreign tourism to Goa may be pent up and would easily double or even triple if Goa simply had proper aviation facilites and connections. Currently over 90% of seasonal charter flights to India are accounted for by Goa.

Just wondering if all the Goan senior citizens (Rich & Poor) are entitled to Rs.500/month pesion or just the deserving ones.. Once, while I was having a chat with a Goan (London) I asked him whether he regularly sends money to his Mom back home (Goa). He sends 100 pounds (Rs.8200) once in 3 months plus his mother gets Govt.Pension Rs.500 per month. plus they have a property to live on. In an other case, in Goa, a well to do family, Father being retired Seaman, One son in the US (wife in Goa), one son works in Gulf, 2 other sons work for Goan hotels etc Retired seaman get their pension and on top Govt. Pension. When asked one the the sons said the local MLA helped them (who also belongs to the same caste 'Charddo' or 'Gaumkars') It looks like half the pension fund goes to the rich or to the friends and family of MLAs, Sarpanchas, panchas etc Both congress and BJP assured that the pension would be raised to Rs.700pm if come back to power. Both also assured starting of 'dole' payment to unemployed youth. Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

Comment: President George Bush, while hugging, kissing and then taking the Saudi Prince by hand; should have requested parity in terms of practising ones religion. Alas all that President Bush is interested in, is oil and for that he is willing to go to bed with the Saudis! Sources inform that President Bush's closest friends are caught in a bear stranglehold. They have gone short on oil, while that big Goldman Sachs (Jewish) Investment Bank has gone very long and is squeezing them till it squeaks. Manmohan of India, has rescinded the move to apply value added tax on Diesel fuel, he saw Bush's embrace of the Saudi Prince and thought; hey, thank God for this Gay President. Hopefully the oil price might come down. In the meantime the Oil price stubbornly won't come down below 50 USD. The longer we stay at these levels the better the chances of a spike upwards. No doubt, President Bush will be scratching his head ( like he is want to do) - 'heck I kissed and hugged the Guy what else do you want me to do?' Cheers, Gabe Menezes. London England.

[Goanet]Goanet Reader -- Let a thousand Konkani(s) bloom
LET A THOUSAND KONKANI(S) BLOOM Of "myths", hegemony, dominant groups and language in Goa In mid-April 2005, the Jesuit priest-linguist Pratap Naik sj of the Thomas Stevens Konknni Kendr at Alto Porvorim raked up a big debate with his talk titled 'Konkani: Myths and Facts'. At Goanet's request, he posted the summary to cyberspace. See http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2005-April/026860.html Goa University sociologist Alito Siqueira responds with his personal views on the issue, in a letter to Dr Naik. This post raises crucial, yet often neglected, issues of caste, and de-legitimisation of certain forms of Konkani, among other issues. It also continues an eager debate already underway on the specialist Goa-Research-Net mailing list. Numbers in the text refer to Dr Naik's arguments available at the URL above. Dear Pratap, I enjoyed your presentation on Friday, April 15 (2005) as you competently confronted more or less popular perceptions of Konkani with established proposition from the domain of linguists. As you ended, like one of the persons who reacted to you, I too wondered: You have identified and spoken on some tress, but where is the forest? I was a bit taken aback by the strength and passion you stimulated in your audience though not so much by the substantive issues raised. I have been thinking about all this since. This letter to you is catharsis of sorts for me and much more than that too. I cannot but take you seriously also because I have empathy with your concern and demand that a thousand Konkanis should bloom and that in the current dispensation Sashti, Malwani, Romi, etc. have been short-changed. I identify with you when you began with explaining 'myth' expressing some fundamental 'truth' (meta reality) and so also that they nevertheless represent interests, political interests. On the other hand 'myth' is also opposed to 'fact' (reality). 'Myth' therefore elicits highly ambivalent meanings. Myth can mean an utter falsehood and, on the contrary, a sacred truth. It is this deep and profound play between that which is not real and is at once meta real (yet to be real?) that gives myth its power -- an indispensable necessity for human aspiration and survival. In your presentation you chose to limit yourself to only one meaning of myth i.e. the Myth of Konkani as opposed to the Facts of Konkani. What was the proposition that informed the construction of most of the 'myths' you identified? It seems to me your underlying thesis -- correct me if I am wrong -- is that "Konkani has been and is an instrument of Saraswat hegemony". I go along with that too. However to me the many myths you identified that support the hegemony proposition are as much myths in the more profound (meta reality) sense and not in the sense that they are contrary to facts. Let me explain with some illustrations: Myth IV.7 is 'Shenai Goybab awakened in us the Konkani identity'. You challenge this by arguing that Goybab's influence was on only one particular community. Valid as this is, it is also true that once the Saraswats aligned their own identity with Konkani, like any dominant group they also sought to create a pan-Goan Konkani identity by offering their language dialect as the most refined marker of that identity. That is, at a time when the politics of creating geographical boundaries demanded unique cultural identity markers it is precisely the Saraswats who used their Konkani to win the support (arrive at a consensus or compromise) of non-dominant groups around Konkani as language and culture of the region. This was indeed a movement of resistance against the effort to erase any identity for this region by submerging it in Maharashtra. Clearly it was the dominant community that had to lead such a movement of resistance and it was done rather successfully. Today Goa as political and cultural entity -- however much contested and unfinished it may yet be -- owes its existence in large measure to the construction of Konkani as a language and culture and the origins of this lie in the works of Goybab. (The seminal works of Orientalists such Cunha Riviera or Dalgado important as they have been, seem to have lacked an organic relationship to the community that could have exercised such dominance). Hence Goybab emerges as the icon of this identity. The fact that Goybab may not be popular and that his writings are unfamiliar even to some of best known Konkani writers is simply not at issue. (How many of the workers who died for communism read Karl Marx or for that matter how many of those who swear by Christ read the Bible or even the New Testament for that matter). An icon's ideas are diffused through the people even while the people may never know

[Goanet]HERALD: Update on Mopa ... and miscellany
Headline: "Bangalore, Hyderabad airports approved: Patel" [April 27]. Excerpt: Pointers: 1) Goa government has communicated its approval for Mopa. 2) The Civil Aviation Minister will take the final decision about going ahead with Mopa 3) The Chakan a/p is slated to cost a mere Rs 550 cr while Navi Mumbai might chime in at a whopping Rs 3,230 cr. These compare with Rs 1,400 cr each for Bangalore and Hyderabad. 4) Chakan bears close watching in Goa because it may be a fall out over the dispute between local industry and the IAF about restrictions at the existing military controlled Pune airport. The Air Chief late last year even hinted at joint management of the "national asset". Updates on this tussle would be appreciated vis a vis Goa's problem at Dabolim.

[Goanet]Demand to include Kannada and Roman script during Akademy Awards.
Mangalore: Demand to include Kannada and Roman script while giving Akademy awards. "We will continue Kannada script in Karnataka as before. But in this era of globalization we need to go along with the happenings of this world. As a large number of our people have migrated from their native place and they keep migrating, use of internet and mobile sms have become the part and parcel of our life and also our people opt to take up education in English medium we find a need of learning a additional Roman script in order to keep continue to communicate in Konkani. That is the reason we find the need of learning Roman script now" said Dr. Edward Nazareth secretary of Karnataka Konkani Writers Forum (Regd) a organization that has more than hundred reputed Konkani writers who use Kannada script for their writings. He was giving an introductory address during a seminar to learn Roman script jointly organised by Karnataka Konkani Writers Forum(regd) and Samanvaya(regd) Mangalore. The seminar was held on 17th April 2005 at Sandesha, Bajjody Mangalore. Rev. Fr. Pratap Naik the Director of Thomas Stephen Konkani Kendr was the main resource person. The dynamic young politician and the South Canara District Vice president of Congress, Mr. Ivan D'Souza was the chief guest. Dr. Gerald Pinto read a memorandum that was urging to recognize Kannada as well as Roman script while considering Sahitya Akademy awards and handed over to Mr. Ivan D'Souza to submit it to the central govt. and to fight for the cause. Accepting the memorandum Mr. Ivan said "I will extend my whole hearted support to the cause of Konkani. I will submit this memorandum to the central Sahitya Akademy and interact with the government in this regard." assured Mr. Ivan. "All the communication of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademy is held only in Kannada. Thus Karantaka Konkani Sahitya Akademy too should extend its full support for this noble cause." he pleaded. "We also need to fight for giving us a Konkani speaking registrar for Konkani Sahitya Akademy and also we need to pressurize the government to publish Konkani news and Mangalore Akashavani" he continued. The forum also mentioned in its memorandum that there are highest number of over 25 literary periodicals in Kannada script which has also the highest readership in Konkani. The devnagiri script has least readership. The books published in Kannada script are of high quality while most of the books of Devnagiri script are published through akademy grants. Still the Akademy is continuously neglecting the quality literature produced in Roman and Kannada scripts. It also publishes books only of Devnagiri script which in fact doesn't reach to the vast Konkani readership. Also the Akademy distributes only devnagiri books in various libraries under government schemes. It accused that though no mention of script was made while including Konkani in the eigth schedule the Sahitya Akademy has continuously played injustice to the writers of Kannada and Dev Nagiri script. Raknno editor Rev. Fr. Eric Crasta inaugurated the seminar. "We have more than 25 literary periodicals in Kannada script. All our periodicals have a very strong subscriber base. Hence we cannot migrate from Kannada script to any other script for Konkani. Hence it is a need of learning Roman script as an additional script for Konkani. He also praised the efforts of Karnataka Konkani Writers forum in this regard." The director of Sandesha Rev. Fr. Denis D'Sa requested to work hand in hand for the cause of Konkani. To make the task of teaching Konkani easy a committee was formed during the occasion to prepare text books. The text book committee members selected are Mr. Dolphy Lobo (President), Dr. Edward Nazareth (Secretary), Rev. Fr. William Barboza, Rev. Fr. Pius Fidelis Pinto, Rev. Fr. Valerian Fernandes, Smt. However, like the Vatican higher-ups, they have been known to be wrong before. Regards, George
