Saw a book titled Bloody Foreigners, published in Britain in 2004 but reissued this year in paperback. I haven't read, but hope it buy it. Did anyone on the goanet read it? This is the type of hysteria that white Britain creates and then the consequences is what we see now happening in that country. No doubt the immigrant Muslim community, and many others, were disturbed with Tony Blair's support to USA in its War Against Terror, the underlying problem seems immigrant distrust and frustration. The social ills of racial discrimination and prejudice takes its own toll. Sad but true. Eugene Correia Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs
[Goanet]AVIATION NEWS UPDATE
1. TIMES OF INDIA July 26, '05. In The big squeeze at IGI Airport [Delhi], the report starts by saying Any city hoping to be a world-class capital cannot do without a state-of-the-art airport. Goa as a citistate which aspires to an internationally attractive quality of life may want to keep this firmly in mind as well. Delhi however is currently resembling am overcrowded railway station according to the TOI report. Surprisingly this was not the plan. There is about 3500 acres of unutilised land the master plan for which (yes it includes a golf course) has ironically not taken off. More damnably, AAI is said to be sitting on a surplus of Rs 3500 crores which could have been used for airport upgrades everywhere including Delhi [and Goa?]. 2. HERALD, July 27, '05. Mopa draft proposal discussed. The Mopa project steering committee headed by the CM discussed a draft of the techno-economic feasibility study undertaken by a French agency named only as ADCI. Officials of the ICAO, Montreal, the consultants to the project appointed some two years ago were also said to be present. There is no reference at all in the report to the sensational May 27 news report in Indian Express about the ICAO's proposal to make Mopa an A380 ready airport by 2014. Instead there is again a mention of the planned (2-3 km) rail link and hence a need to co-opt KRC into the steering committee. Thankfully, the report makes no mention of international in describing Mopa airport! 3. HERALD, July 27, '05. Rains hit air, road traffic. This report talks about the disruption of flights on July 26 due to the torrential rains in Mumbai. As a result at least 800-900 passengers were stranded in Goa. It seems flights (of Jet Airways) from other destinations that were headed for Mumbai were also diverted to Goa. A total of six aircraft ended up being parked at Goa on Tuesday night. International flights were turned away 9e.g. to Ahmedabad) because of lack of parking space. The report anticipated problems for today's (Wed) two incoming flights in the morning at Dabolim.
[Goanet]Former Goa star footballer forced to beg for a living
By Devraj, Goa: Once famous for displaying stylish performance on the ground, the Footballer Menino Caldeira, who today suffers from Gangrene, was recently picked up from the streets by the Goa Football association. Caldeira was the cynosure of all sports-lovers in the seventies and early eighties. During the peak of his career he was even named as the Goan Pele. Now, deserted by family and friends, Calderia is compelled to beg in the streets of Goa even for managing a two square meals. Suffering from Gangrene, with both of his feet bandaged, Calderia is leading a life of misery.Today, he is awaiting surgery at the Goa Medical College. There are always some black sheep among football players. Most footballers take care of their health, try and save some money, so that they can lead a happy retired life. Here, this person has not taken care of his health and thats why hes in such a condition, said Savio Messias , Secretary, Goa Football Association. Born in Santa Cruz, Ponda, Calderia was popularly known as Hampri. He played for Salgaocars, Vasco and Dempo, and Morarji Mills and Piramal Mills in Mumbai. [Goanet]TIATRO BHURGHIM MAI-PAICHEM SUKH
TIATRO BHURGHIM MAI-PAICHEM SUKH The stage is all set now for Rosary Ferns and his troupe to stage this new Konkani Tiatro Bhurghim Mai-Paichem Sukh on 12th August 2005 at Hawally A/C Hall, Opp. Mubarakiya Hospital. This will be Rosary Ferns 19th Tiatro, which is based on the latest trend in our family life. All parents and children must not lose this opportunity to see this tiatro. The cast is all seasoned, some of them earlier in Goa thorough professionals and as such I am sure that they will perform their roles to the total satisfaction of the audience. The major part of the play will be handled by the hit - man Sylvester Vaz, Laurent Pereira, Querobina Carvalho, Adrian, Sandra, Xavier, Manuel, Sanny and Simon while others namely Conchita, Martha, Lawry M., Margareth DCruz and Marcus Vaz will give an added booster for the play. The comedy roles from the beginning till end will be done by both the comedian brothers Prince Jacob and supremo Humbert and they will surely produce peals of laughter in the Hawally A/C Hall. Besides their own comdy side show they will also act as comedians in the play. The two visiting female artistes namely tragedy queen Antonette de Calangute whom I have been watching acting from her very early age at Calangute and other surrounding areas will with her tragic role melt the hearts of the audience and Annie Quardos by playing the serpentine role will make the audience lose their temper. As a matter of fact the selected cast looked very matured and seasoned and they will leave no stone unturned to make their mission a very successful. As it is from what I have seen thru the ongoing rehearsals, all artistes are very enthusiastic and eager to perform well. And as per Rosary Ferns, they are all very helpful and co-operative. The side show songs will definitely mesmerize the audience as best of available singing talent, local as well as visiting, will give a feast of best of numbers starting from melodious singer Sanny de Quepem followed by Querobina Carvalho, Marcus Vaz, Sylvester Vaz, Michael DSilva, Zoro and Rosary Ferns. The others who will delight the people in the hall thru their songs will be all the visiting artistes. As a sudden surprise to the audience first time in Kuwait a newly formed trio of Marcus Vaz Syslvester Vaz Laurent Pereira will entertain the crowd by their new trios. About the newly formed trio, it must be brought to the notice of the people that when a trio is formed every one becomes curious because in the past trios have always created sensation and solid impact on the minds of the audience and I am sure the newly formed trio of M-S-L will also create a good impact of itself, of course to the delight of the audience. In the history of Tiatro the first known trio was of Kid-Young-Rod which during those days created heavy impact on tiatro goers. All these 3 artistes were gigantic figures and up to now none emulated them. Then came the famous political singer trio of Conception-Nelson-Anthony soon after the liberation of Goa and from this trio only Anthony is still surviving. The third popular trio that came into existence was of Rom-Rem-Rod and they too directed their songs and tirade on political situation of Goa. The other trio that also created some impact at lower level in Goa was of Tomazinho Cardoso his elder brother Anton Joao Volley DMello and they too hit the then Government of Bandodkar very hard. I hope the newly formed trio will sing very attractive and beautiful songs in keeping with the tradition of past trios and I am sure they have the capacity to deliver the goods because all the three singers are gigantic artistes. [Goanet]Goa: Right to Information Act 2005
Right to Information Act: HoDs told to identify information officers NT Staff Reporter Panaji, July 26: A task force constituted under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Ms Kiran Dhingra for implementation of Right to Information Act, 2005, today told the heads of various departments to prepare themselves to identify the officiating authorities as the public information officer and assistant information officer in their respective department. The central government has directed all the states to complete the formalities to provide information sought by the citizens before October 12 and accordingly the state is gearing up for the implementation of the act. The act supersedes the Goa Right to Information Act. All the HoDs will officiate as appellate authority and the government will constitute the State Information Commission, which is the highest authority in the state for the citizens to lodged complaints, if the information is delayed or denied to them. The meeting chaired by Ms Dhingra was attended by all the heads of the departments, besides the secretaries. Ms Dhingra directed the HoD to follow the 17 manuals listed under the act. Ms Dhingra impressed upon the HoD to make determine efforts to provide information in simple and easy way and if possible in the local language, if the need arises. Ms Dhingra said that the Information Act was important to take the government to the doorstep of the people and that it would promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authority. She said Goa was among the two states which have taken the right step to implement a similar act in the past. The manuals listed under the Act makes it mandatory to every department to prepare a booklets explaining about the particular of the organisations, its functions and duties, powers of duties of officers for the ready reference of the citizens. Besides, the manual also makes it mandatory to departments for explaining the procedure followed in making a decision. While giving the insight of the Right to Information Act, the Chief Secretary said the Central Government has decided to make governance by the people and for the people and hence there should not be any scope for misgiving in the minds of the authorities over providing requisite information to the public. Ms Dhingra said the assistant public information officers will undertake the work of receiving applications from the public whereas public information officers will shoulder the responsibility of creating data base and maintaining it on the Internet. The Chief Secretary said the act casts an obligation on public authorities to grant access to information and to maintain and publish all records duly catalogued regarding their organisation within 120 days. In cases of denial of information to the public the authorities should give logical reasons for it. The government has asked the department to spend from the department fund for making the preparations as per the manuals or forward a proposal for grant to the government. The Secretary (information), Ms Debashree Mukharjee gave a presentation of the Right to Information Act. Later the chief secretary, Law Secretary, Mr V P Shetye, replied to the various queries raised by the HoDs. Ms Mukharjee, while giving presentation on Right to Information Act highlighted the tasks to be completed prior to commencement of the act which included preparing manuals, designation of public information officers and others. A time limit of 30 days has been prescribed for compliance with requests for information under the act which can be extended to 40 days where third party interests are involved. A fine of Rs 250 per day subject to a maximum of Rs 25,000 for delay in providing information will be imposed under the act. The meeting began with an introduction by the director of information and publicity, Mr Menino Peres, who is also the member secretary of the task force said that Goa was second state in India in 1997 to introduced Right to Information Act and now is also on the forefront to implement Central Information Act.

Hi Eric Pinto, Regret I could not respond to your post sooner. I really appreciate your very unusual candid disclosure about your family in your post below, and thus by implication, a clear pointer on Goanet that, you have an example of an absence of cohesion within the wider Goan community. How truly sad for you to be burdened by such a predicament, but how genuinly brave and honest of you to tell us of your situation. Hopefully, Goanet contributers can be of some help regarding the circumstances you describe. Cornel DaCosta, London, UK. From: eric pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Divisive !! [Goanet]Re: Which of the two events of '61 are a failure?
Hello Goanetters, Its hard to say which was a failure, as either way, Goa would have been liberated or attained its independence in the long run, even Macau got it. But what was wrong was the way it was attained. It was hurry, hurry affair, with no person fit to rule Goa. A big mistake on the part of Nehru, Hence all we have had were crooks ruling Goa, and Goans have accepted it as a way of life. Tumi chorat, amkam susegad dovrat. We Goans have always shied away from troubles, pois san polloupi. Its pointless crying over spilt milk. Until now, we have no Goan who can rule Goa, maybe something wrong with the chair. All good people leaving the soil to foreign countries and others remaining in Goa. To loot all they can. Fir bi dil hai Hindustani. Goans wake up and give Floraino a chance. Cheers Jerry Fernandes --- Bernado Colaco [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If we do not accept failures we can not move on. The events of 61 was a clear failure, and still more you are not accepting the death of rule of law in Goa. Very shameful indeed. Which of the two events of '61 are a failure? 1. Goa liberated of the Portuguese. 2. Nehru's invasion. Is it not clear which of the two events you consider 'a clear failure'.
[Goanet]AVC-KUWAIT KIFF LEAGUE AND SEASONS CHAMPIONS
AVC (Assolna, Velim, Cuncolim)- Kuwait sponsored by Dawat Restaurants Kuwait claimed the prestigious KIFF League champions by defeating archrivals Navelim Youth Center in the finals held on 1st July 2005 on Soor grounds Kuwait. The Chief Guest for the finals was Mr. V.K. Vohra and Mr. Raymond DSa was the guest of honour. The game started on a cautious note with NYC dominating the opening session of the first half and AVC was lucky not to concede a goal as the woodwork came to their rescue. After withstanding the onslaught of NYC in the first fifteen minutes AVC came into their own with Jimmy playing the sheet anchor role in the midfield with Roland on the flank and AVC started to dominate the game as they have done throughout this season. They took NYC by surprise and in one whirlwind move the fleet footed Molvito took the NYC goalkeeper in his stride and scored a gem of a goal. Goaded by this success AVC kept up the tempo and NYC were lucky not to concede again with Molvito and Roland missing easy sitters. At this juncture NYC resorted to hard tackles with Duarte leading from the front but the young lads of AVC were not to be intimidated. The second half was purely dominated by AVC and it was matter of time they consolidated their lead, the defense led by stand-in Captain Vincy (for Agnelo Miranda on annual leave), Godfrey, Elvis and Alex had completely bottled up NYCs forwards. It was after twenty minutes in the second half the referee changed his decision and pointed to the dreaded spot for an alleged foul on NYCs forward. AVC protested vehemently as the referee consulted his assistant who was forced by Norman of NYC in full view of the public to tell the referee that it was a deliberate foul. It was quite ridiculous of the referee to agree to his assistant, as he was the closest to the incident and had already awarded a free kick to AVC against the NYC player who was clearly seen faking. The linesman, if he had seen the incident should have raised the flag but did not do so. The referee did not issue a card to AVC player for the alleged foul. After heated exchanges calm prevailed and NYC equalized. Things started to heat up as the rhythm of the otherwise good game of soccer was broken by that horrible incident and once again NYCs Duarte used his physical strength and got into scuffle with AVCs Vincy. The referee again turned a blind eye which otherwise would have been marching orders for the offender. AVC forwards and the midfielders poured in on NYC in search for the winner and NYC goalkeeper who is otherwise known for his loud mouth than safeguarding his goal did good to keep level. The game then went into tie-breaker after extra time yielded no result. Once again AVCs goalkeeper Nicholas was the hero as he saved one and then mocked Britto who hit the post as usual to give AVC the well deserved win and the championship. It may be noted that NYC last wish for defeating AVC evaporated with this loss as they have been consistently on the receiving end for the last two seasons It was a honor for the AVCs President Mr. John Furtado and his boys for keeping AVCs name at the peak of Goan football in Kuwait. At the end of the match for AVC it was mission accomplished, fans delirious and critics stumped. As said the Real Madrid of Kuwait Goan Soccer ruled the roost in 2004-2005. [Goanet]Abbe Faria anniversary
Jose Custodio Faria - alias Abbe Faria. On the 31st of May 2006, one has the opportunity to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of a great son of Goa, the pioneer hypnotist who made a significant contribution to the study of the human mind and behaviour - Jose Custodio Faria ( of Colvale and Candolim, Goa). To remind fellow Goans of this date, and of this opportunity, the Mustard Seed Art Company, in collaboration with the Research Institute for Women, Goa, organised a Power Point presentation on the life and work of Abbe Faria at the Kala Academy, on the 31st of May, this year. This was by way of a small beginning, and a drop of hope that it would spark off more ideas. A few initiatives are already in hand: Luis de Santa Rita Vas, from Bombay, has written an epistolary novel entitled: Abbe Faria: the Making of the Pioneering Indian Hypnotist . The author is in the process of contacting publishers. Also, Cecil Pinto and Isabel de Santa Rita Vas, Goa, are making a short film documentary on the life and work of Faria, in the format of interviews with a variety of persons connected with the Abbe. Another project in the offing is an original play to be staged by the Mustard Seed Art Company entitled Kator Re Bhaji, in mid-December 2005, and then in May 2006. It is hoped that Goans and others enthusiasts will celebrate Faria and what he stood for with enthusiasm and exciting ideas. Isabel de S.R.Vas.
[Goanet]No support for Konkani entertainers - Ethel da Costa
HEART 2 HEART - JULY 24 Herald BY ETHEL DA COSTA No knight in shining armour for `Aleesha'? A national award makes headlines. The State sits up and takes notice. Newspapers gush with flowery reports. Enough hype and congratulations follow from enthusiasts and assorted montris. But fact is, Rajendra Talak is a disappointed man. The 'knight' in shining armour has deserted his `Aleesha' after political equations shifted gear. `Aleesha' has been left high and dry. Broken promises and ditched at the altar by her double standard suitor. Facing the music, literally, to foot the bills, the good Talak is learning the hard way that passion, in Goa, is a virtue very few understand. Fewer still who honour commitment (the spoken word, or the written word), especially now that the present government is trying to step in and help foot the bills incurred by the past government. At the risk of repetition, could somebody tell us why governments continue to give the cold shoulder to the development of the Konkani film industry in Goa? Despite landmark strides made by Konkani artistes, they struggle hard to make a decent living, digging deep into their own pockets to try out new concepts in drama or production. We have enough stalwarts in tiatr stepping new footprints on their own steam - Prince Jacob, Roseferns to name a few. Their struggles compounding when no government support is forthcoming to help boost this industry's 100 odd year contribution to local entertainment and dissemination of socially relevant issues through drama. Parrikar made a big show about uplifting this industry, I suspect, to win over a few Catholics, instead making generous donations to a Marathi film showcased at the IFFI, 2004, while sorely neglecting the dire need to inject quality and new blood through incentives and sponsorships to sustain the local traditional performing arts. While silence is good for introspection, I don't accept it when priorities get compromised to suit political agendas and noise is needed to balance out the equations. Talak has been at the receiving end of this double speak. I'm irked that there has been near silence from bastions of entertainment loving Goans to address Talak's shortchange of commitment. A lack of support could hamper future artistic explorations in cinema because passion, in Goa, comes loaded with a heavy price tag. While we have discussed how Goa should set about wooing Hollywood and Bollywood to our sunny beaches, has anyone asked how IFFI could serve the cause of the Goan tiatrist and the Konkani film industry to give local talent a wider platform? I should think this question would rein prime in the local context, since we're all excited about inviting the world to our doorstep, while thumbing down the local arts with a step-motherly cold shoulder. Having known the tiatr fraternity through my work, here's a community struggling to hold on to a theatre form, not only for the sake of talent (and they boast rich talent), but for the kinship with their Mother Tongue - Konkani. Perhaps, the sole factor which binds every tiartist to his soil, his village, despite their differences. There is great pride in their vocation, I say this because I have yet to meet a tiatrist who doesn't believe himself the ambassador of the language. So, while other states actively encourage regional films, Goa's award winning Konkani filmmakers are running pillar to post instead of celebrating their shot at celebrity. My point is simple: If IFFI means serious business, then so should Konkani artistes who must come together and demand support from government run cultural bodies to help their cause. Set up an association of experts, procure infrastructure (cameras, trolleys) that could also be used as a source of revenue sub-letting to outstation shoots, plan a calendar of activities for the year and ask the government to commit financially to the local entertainment industry. It's time Goa really gets her act together. PS: Given the skeletons tumbling fast from the CCP cupboards, could someone please take a broom and clean up the sorry garbage mess behind the Campal Trade Centre building? And while the CCP authorities are doing so, could they please tell the adjacent military hospital to take care of their waste and not dump it over the neighhbour's wall. What's wrong with our civic sensibilities? = Goa-World.Com adds: Aleesha wins award NT Staff Reporter Panaji July 13, 2005 : The Konkani film, Aleesha was selected for the National Award for the Best Film in Konkani. Aleesha is the first Konkani celluloid film after a pretty long time and it was premiered at the 35th International Film Festival of India held in Panaji last year. May 31, 2006 will mark the 250th birth anniversary of Abbe Faria. Perhaps, incorporated in this Years World Goa Day should be the initiative to urge the Indian Postal authorities into issuing a stamp to mark the historical event and the singular significance of this illustrious Goan. Dom Martin Could it also be possible to ask the Postal Authorities to improve the quality of Indian Postal stamps? Stamps are like ambassadors of our country, and the extremely poor quality of most of our stamps (excluding special ones available only at the Panjim Head PO) are a poor reflection on our country. sonia
[Goanet]The Street vendors and their developing Nation
Street vendors become special component of development plan PTI, New Delhi, July 26: Recognising the role of hawkers in the economy, the Centre has finalised a national policy which envisages to make street vendors a “special component” of the development/zoning plans by treating them as an integral and legitimate part of the urban distribution system. Aiming to do away with the popular perception of treating street vendors as unlawful entities being subjected to continous harassment by police and civic authorities, the policy calls upon the state to protect their rights. “Street vendors provide valuable services to the urban population while trying to earn a livelihood and it is the duty of the state to protect the rights of this segment of population to earn their livelihood,” the national policy for urban street vendors has envisaged. During the proceedings before the Supreme Court today on the issue of Mumbai hawkers, advocate Mr Vijay Panjwani informed the court that the Centre would file the national policy in the court within three weeks. Emphasising the demarcation of the vending zones, the plan stresses that the designation of vendors market and no vending zones should not be left to the sole discretion of civic authorities and must be accomplished by a participatory process by a town vending committee, comprising atleast 25 to 40 per cent of the total number of its members. At least one-third of the representatives of street vendors are women, it said.

[Goanet]Re: Signs of our times!!
Dear Dr Pascal, Thanks for posting this. I was shocked to read it; it is a wake-up call for all of us. The other day, there was an interesting report from Armstrong about how the rice-bowl of Salcete is going barren... in some cases due to flooding by an irrigation project (Salaulim) that was intended to increase the rice crop! Of course, food security means nothing to us. We are all thinking short-term, and politicians have their five-year vision, while newspapers have a 24-hour horizon. We haven't bothered to think about what happens when our fields are concretised, our hillocks industrialised and garbage-laden, and the tourists have gone. FN From: pascal pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear All, This Sunday the Vicar of Merces church made the announcement that there would be no blessing of the crop in Merces this year as there has been no cultivation of the rice crop in the communidades of Pequeno, Morombi O grande, Vaddi Merces etc.Instead there would be blessing of vegetables instead. Perhaps this reflects the official line of the Government -the promotion of horticulture.I am sure the situation is equally grim in the other villages of Goa. The sad fact is that our fields are being used as garbage dumps and are being converted for ??more remunerative non agricultural uses. Pascal

[Goanet]AVC KUWAIT KIFF LEAGUE AND SEASONS CHAMPIONS 2005
AVC KUWAIT KIFF LEAGUE AND SEASONS CHAMPIONS 2005 AVC- Kuwait sponsored by Dawat Restaurants Kuwait have become the Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) League champions to claim the Late J.P. D'Mello Troupe by defeating archrivals Navelim Youth Center in the finals held on 1st July 2005 on Soor Grounds. The Chief Guest for the finals was V.K. Vohra and Raymond DSa was the guest of honour. The game started on a cautious note with NYC dominating the opening session of the first half and AVC was lucky not to concede a goal as the woodwork came to their rescue. After withstanding the onslaught of NYC in the first fifteen minutes AVC came into their own and in one whirlwind move the fleet footed Molvito took the NYC goalkeeper in his stride and scored a gem of a goal. Goaded by this AVC kept up the tempo and NYC was lucky not to concede again with Molvito and Roland missing easy sitters. (Photo courtesy: AVC / http://www.goa-world.com) The second half was purely dominated by AVC, and as they were approaching to consolidate their lead, the referee pointed to the dreaded spot for an alleged foul on NYCs forward and NYC equalized. The game then went into tie-breaker after extra time yielded no result. Once again AVCs goalkeeper Nicholas was the hero and gave his team the well deserved win and the championship and denied NYC a win against AVC in the last two seasons. Nicholas saved one and denied Britto who used his mouth than his feet in the last kick. It may be noted that AVC had defeated NYC in the regular tournament to claim the Season Champions title. A wholesome achievement for AVCs President John Furtado and his boys for achieving this unique feat after finishing third in the last two seasons and a fitting tribute to the critics who had written off AVC as chokers. Once again as predicted the Real Madrid of Kuwait Goan Soccer ruled the roost on Soor grounds in the season 2004-2005. Long live AVC-Kuwait. In the third and fourth place playoffs Bombay Boys defeated G.O.A Maroons by two goals to nil. At the prize distributing ceremony the KIFF President Tony Dias welcomed the guests and thanked the sponsors. Cajetan (Pereira) de Sanvordem (Registrar, KIFF) compeered and Xavier Furtado (General Secretary KIFF) proposed the vote of thanks. The following prizes were awarded: KIFF League Champions (Late J.P. [Goanet]RIVER PRINCESS SAGA MAKES EVIS GOMES A SCAPEGOAT
Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane should step in swiftly and undo the grave injustice meted out to Elvis Gomes, a young and dynamic Goan Officer. Governor Jamir's unusual action taken late on Saturday 4th June to suspend Elvis Gomes as Director of Tourism was flawed and further injury was done to the officer by serving the suspension order on the same night through Police personnel. I cannot recollect any other officer being suspended in this manner. When Goa's vigilance department has not found any malafide deed in the actions and conduct of Mr Gomes, what prevents the Government from reinstating Elvis with full honours? Even Deputy Chief Minister Dr Wilfred De Souza has publicly stated that proper procedures were not followed in the suspension of Mr. Gomes. Why then is not responsibility being fixed against officers responsible for the malafide act of suspending Elvis Gomes? By suspending Elvis Gomes, is the Government telling other officers that they would meet the same fate if they dare take any action to remove the River Princess? It was reported that Mr. Gomes had allegedly misled the Governor. Was Mr. Gomes the advisor to the Governor? If not, why was the hierarchy in between not taken to task? Governor Jamir failed to appreciate the 5-year history of the River Princess and decided to look at in isolation only at the last 4 months when it was for the first time that real action took place to remove the vessel. As the River Princess saga rages on, many questions remained unanswered. Why was no action taken against those officers who allowed the ship to remain in Goan waters when all of the ship's certificates such as Survey, Registration, insurance had become invalid way back in 1999? Action ought to have been taken against the errant ship owners, agents and the charterers under international maritime law and conventions. Why were damages not slapped on the owners for oil spillage that had occurred along the Coast and the hazard that has been posed by the vessel to the coastal environment of Goa? The Goa administration failed to file an FIR and direct a police investigation into this matter when the coastal ecology was under threat. Why was action initiated under section 5 of the environment protection act not pursued by the department of Science and Technology? One fails to comprehend why the task of removing a ship was entrusted to a department such as the Tourism. It would have been appropriate to rope in the Mercantile Marine Department to deal with the Ship. Goans need to be informed as to why Mr. Raghuraman who was Tourism Secretary for the last 4 long years failed to take up the above issues with the Government earlier and advise the Governor, more so when he was also Secretary to the Governor. Why was no action taken against Mr Raghuraman in the light of his questionable role? How was he himself allowed to handle the file relating to the suspension of Mr. Gomes when his role was under a cloud? Why was he relieved recently by the Goa Government without having to answer a single question while leaving Elvis Gomes as a scapegoat? Reinstating Elvis will not answer all questions. In the public interest the Government should order a judicial inquiry into the whole River Princess affair so that the whole truth comes to light. Aires Rodrigues ___ Yahoo! Dona Paul hill top is an ideal place for this; as many starred hotels are also in close proximity and the views are fabulous. I can think of another site that is suitable, but requires a rather large revamp - the halls are there I'm sure, and a bit of imagination will be required to get the old Lyceum buildings at Altinho looking as grand as they were in their heyday. And besides, they will nicely maintain the Goan heritage, instead of going for tasteless concretet structures. I am sure these grand old buildings will reap handsome returns, especially if the same are wired properly for audio-visual facilities, and as nowadays the trend is to go for wireless networking, a loop or some other artifice could be built within the perimeter of the buildings for those who would like wireless internetworking or make use of a wireless lan during the convention. There are a number of separate buildings, some of which could be used for restaurant facilities during conventions or otherwise. Note that one of the buildings has already been revamped and is currently being used as the Bombay bench of High Court (I hope I am correct). So why not give these buildings a second lease of life? to handle the traffic that would be generated by the Centre, with a proposed capacity of 4000+ persons etc.; it is not just the arrangements , but the provision of new minimum 'four lane' Roads that are required.[Nasci Caldeira, July 25] For a convention of 4000 people, we would need to reserve all flights into Dabolim for at least two days before and two days after. This is because currently we receive about 2000 passengers per day (15 flights x 130 pax per flt) from all flights excluding charters. Instead of wasting energy and money on 4 lane and 6 lane highways through inhospitable terrain/crowded localities, why not go all out to get the naval training flights out of Dabolim once and for all? [Goanet]PRESS RELEASE FOR KIND FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION - SUB: IFFI
Jul 26, 2005 To: The Administrator, GOANET. For kind favour of publication. Thanking you, Yours Sincerely, for Goa Su-Raj Party Sd/- Gen. Secretary/Spokesperson. *** PRESS RELEASE Subject: CBI Investigation into IFFI Projects. The Goa Su-Raj Party is concerned about the reluctance of the Chief Minister Mr. Pratapsing Rane to initiate the CBI inquiry/investigations into the IFFI projects, inspite of the Congress Party having made this as its election plank during the recent bye-elections in five constituencies. The Goa Su-Raj Party congratulates Lokshakti for having organized the public meet on July 25, 2005 at Menezes Brangaza Hall, where naked facts of gross mismanagement and wastage of public funds have been professionally explained to the full house of concerned citizens of Goa. The Party concurs with the mindset of each and every speaker at this meet, more so, that the culprits must be brought to book through a thorough time-bound CBI investigation. The Party is with the people who believe that such acts of 'rape' of the people of Goa through misinformation and gross misappropriation of public funds must not go unchallenged and that if Mr. Rane is reluctant to initiate the time-bound CBI inquiry at the earliest, he is to be considered as 'persona non-grata, being accessory to the 'rape' and therefore demand that he vacates the august chair of the Chief Minister of Goa. The Goa Su-Raj Party which was initially against holding of the IFFI in Goa at such a short notice is of the opinion that: a) IFFI 2005 must be held at all costs so that not-holding the IFFI after putting in place the required infrastructure (overpaid or not) will only immortalize Mr. Manohar Parrikar. b) That IFFI 2005 and subsequent IFFIs can be held for not more than Rs. 2 to 3 crores, where one hundred crores demanded by the Rane Government of the center is absurd. c) Having awakened the aspirations of Goan talents, example of which is Konkani film ALISHA' which has earned National recognition, it would be a sheer let down. Besides, the Congress party now in power has a chance to show to the world that Goa can organize IFFI on professional basis minus unwanted funfare. d) Rane's government which is sweet on the Convention Centre in Goa which is estimated to cost Rs. 250 plus crores would be a disservice to Goa if IFFI is not held in 2005 and subsequently held at the convention center on its completion. e) The convention center should not be another rape of Goa and its people considering the new thinking of popular governments that mega projects offer mega commissions to be pocketed by the powers that be. f)That HOK, the Canadian Consultants engaged by Mr. Manohar Parrikar 's government for IFFI must be sued for breach of trust. g) Clarification sought from Congress government in Goa vide a White Paper with respect to MOPA Airport, proposed Pednem-Pollem Highway and the Goa Convention Centre, their priority benefits to Goa, remembering that the people will want accountability of each and every rupee spent on these projects so that the rape such as the IFFI-2004 does not happen again and culprits going scot free. [Goanet]How the Sangh is controlling Goa?
Herald, Panjim, 24th July 2005 How the Sangh is controlling Goa? BY Nityendra Y Kamat PANJIM, JULY 23 — When BJP’s national secretary Sudheendra Kulkarni, a close aide of now controversy-ridden national President L K Advani, accused the RSS of “micro-managing” the BJP and remote-controlling its leaders, just before he quit the post, little did he realise that he had opened a can of worms throughout the country. The question is: Was the Sangh Parivar really remote-controlling the activities of the BJP? And this question grew in importance in Goa especially after the fall of the Manohar Parrikar government. Yes, in Goa, there is much more to the BJP scenario than what meets the eye. It may appear very Manohar Parrikar-centric but that is wrong. Says writer and social thinker Advocate Uday Bhembre, “Parrikar may have tried to say no to some proposals from the Sangh but apparently there were many in his government who pursued or patronised directly or indirectly (the Sangh agenda).’’ Parrikar might have done a tight-rope walk in the first stint as chief minister with many RSS-initiated decisions remaining camouflaged. However, in the second stint, some things were quite blatant and obvious, analysts say. And it showed how well-entrenched the RSS influence was in the party. BJP is the political wing of the Sangh Parivar while the RSS is the fountainhead of Hindutva. “The relationship between the RSS and the BJP is the same throughout the country and is decided at the top level which gets percolated down to the State level,” says Adv Bhembre. The distinction between the two is that all BJP men/leaders have not come from the RSS. It was quite clear that all the decisions of the RSS may not have been pushed by the BJP government but there were many it couldn’t reject. At times, everyone lapped up certain “good decisions” without knowing what the real intention was. “Their planning is very intelligently done,” said noted social activist and convenor of Lok Shakti, Datta Damodar Naik. They always tried to give an impression that all their decision were in public interest. Working in a very subtle manner in league with Sangh Parivar wings and maintaining secrecy has been an important feature of the BJP working, “especially in the education and socio-cultural sectors,” says Bhembre. How the Sangh is controlling Goa? partly influenced by the RSS. The reason is obvious because it is very rare that the education portfolio is held by the chief minister and that many changes were brought in to suit their interests.’’ The first signs of its saffron colour came to light when Parrikar government in the guise of keeping government offices open for more days, cancelled days certain religious public holidays such as Good Friday, Feast of St Francis Xavier, Gudi Padva, Id, etc. Following the public outcry and media criticism particularly the Herald, besides protests from coalition partners, the decision had to be withdrawn. But whether the decision makers had more concern for the common man or had some other agenda was quite obvious. Fortunately, this vicious plan was not allowed to go through, otherwise, they would have gone ahead with their programmes. According to Datta Naik, “the RSS as an organisation has grown at the grass-root level since the last five years. The massive rally of the RSS which featured then Goa CEO Parrikar in the RSS uniform, on the occassion of Gudi Padva three years ago was an indication of the force of the organization in the State. And it was during this time that affiliate organsiations like Vidhya Bharti (education), Sahakari Bharti (co-operative field), Sanskar Bharti (art culture), Durya Vayni (women’s groups), besides ABVP -- the students wing of the parent body – RSS flourished, which allowed the VHP to grow in Goa thus allowing general secretary Dr Togadia to make alleged inflammatory speech in Panjim. No doubt realising that this programme would not meet every one’s approval, the BJP launched several beautification programmes which attempted to attract the intellectual class to the party. And very few knew that it was being done with a tinge of Hindutva. Thus starts the process of slowly indoctrinating the person with soft-Hindutva, says Naik. -- Question everything - Karl Marx

We have many talented guys gals,in various fields(including jounalists) who can motivate the public and govt. on this score. v.f. Mumbai PS The amount of effort energy spent on debating/discussing religious issues on this forum, could be better utilised for generating public opinion on getting a konkanni channel.Viewing konkanni programmes live on tv, will also make the written script issue(roman or devnagiri)less important. [Goanet]SILVER JUBILEE OF HOLY FAMILY CHOIR, KUWAIT
SILVER JUBILEE OF HOLY FAMILY CHOIR, KUWAIT. Today 26th July is the feast of St. Joaquim St. Anne. Happy feast to all who celebrate this feast. Today is also a very important day as it marks the 25th anniversary of the formation of Holy Family Choir in Kuwait under the leadership of Albino Fernandes who came to Kuwait then with all the know-how of organizing Church activities in Bombay. 25 years ago with full of youth and vigour, Albino with the help of his Church colleagues namely Organist Edward Camilo, Guitarist Johny Fernandes, Margareth Fernandes, Marie Gomes, Diana, Aubrey, Renita Mendonca, Joe Antao, Vera Wilma DSouza, Farida Zarina, Bernanrd Carrol, James Jannet Franco, Brian, Anthony, Lydia, Audrey, Marcelino, Roque, Francis Xavier (now Fr. Francis) and Philipe Nazareth formed the Holy Family Choir in Kuwait. The purpose of this Choir was to help the people in general and parishioners in particular in all their needs within the capacity of the Choir members. The main purpose to glorify God. Within a year that is in 1981 this Choir engulfed in its fold more members namely Xavier Dias, Anthony Ubaldino Fernandes, Flloyd Castelino, Olga Dorothy, Anklet Pinto, Remy Fernandes, Mario Fernandes, Lawry Rodrigues, Agusto Luis Moraes, Donald, Suzie, Orlando DMello, Trumpeter Dias, Joseph-Lucy-Ronda Rebello, Margareth DCruz, Celine, George Gomes, Joe Silveira, Lourdes, Violonist Francis Machado, Neves, Juliao, Johny Clara Rodrigues, Santolino Pereira, Olinda, musician Shahu, Pearl, Kevin, Espy Simon. During its 25 years of existence, Holy Family Choir under the leadership of Albino Fernandes and with the active support of all the Choir members helped in organizing not only Church related activities but also other cultural activities such as organizing of Parents Day functions where even some attractive entertainment programmes held. Besides, this Choir sang for many weddings and assisted in funeral services and when need arises it even helped financing the education of student. A few years back this Choir organized pilgrimage to Ahmadi Church and held religious services there. Many times this Choir proved to be of great assistance to many of the parishioners and some of its members had even joined together in the sacrament of matrimony. Many times this Choir helped many of the local Goan associations in organizing their cultural activities though it got involved more with Goan and Konkani activities. When the current Bishop of Kuwait Monsg. Francis Mechallef came to Kuwait and took over from the then retired Bishop Monsg. Victor Sanminguel, Albinos Choir as it was popularly known organized a royal reception with an entertainment programme. In October 2000, it has released a nice Souvenir and proceeds of it were sent to Mother Theresas Mission in Calcutta, the amount being Indian rupees One Lakh. According to Albino, it is thru this Choir that he and many of his colleagues managed to gain limelight and reach to different segments of the society. In 2001 in a sudden and unexpected development, the initiator and a force behind this Choir Albino Fernandes withdrew from this Choir when he found it beyond his control to put an end to the unfaithfulness of some of the members with the backing of clergy and present retiring Bishop Mechallef. In order not to damage the fair image of the Choir, Albino said he resorted to this drastic action on his part. When questioned, Albino said he had to take recourse to this action of withdrawing because he could not face the backstabbing by some of his own colleagues. Though Albino is no longer actively taking part in this Choir yet he harbours no anger but wishes the choir all the best and he feels this Choir has got a strong base and because of this base it survives and will survive though lot of unwanted criticism will come as it happened sometime back in the internet thru factious letters. While speaking to this writer, Albino Fernandes said that he wishes everyone a very happy and glorious feast and stressed on thanking the following for their enormous cooperation for the promotion of this choir even though they are not members of this Choir. They are: Tiatrist Rosary Ferns, Jose Rod, Comedian Philipe, Goan Welfare Society, Canara Welfare Association, Anthony Telles, Lawry Pinto, Max the Drummer, Dennis Base Guitarist, Sucorro the musician, Drummer Niranjan, Daniel Camilo the Saxophonist, Joe Borges, Tony Shuwaikh Electrical and Mr. Mrs. Wilfred. These are the people whom Albino said he remembers well but by mistake anyone is forgotten, he apologises. A. Veronica Fernandes, Kuwait. SILVER JUBILEE OF HOLY FAMILY CHOIR, KUWAIT.
