[Goanet] RE: Goa to invite bids for monorail project

2005-09-15 Thread Philip Thomas
 [Lawrence Rodrigues]

The skybus technology which seems to have been talked about for a long time
really sounds too good to be true. It is most unfortunate that they went and
goofed up fatally in a relatively simple matter like testing -- not just
once, but twice! As a result they could not go to the next stage of
developing a live demonstration project in conjunction with the Goa govt a
big backer of the system. So they have nothing to show anyone by way of a
functioning skybus system. Hence no customers for it. Very sad.

[Goanet] Goans in the USA

2005-09-15 Thread Tony Barros
Hi Gilbert !

Your last posting on the above subject states that goans where-ever
they are should visit each both for mutual benefit, and to expose
their kids to Goan culture.

This is being done all the time - particularly during the long
weekends. Others have also attended events organized by the
community, and likewise the hosts have also reciprocated.

However, I do not know how a weekend encounter/short holiday could
expose kids to Goan culture - all the more so since most of them
are so Americanized. A trip to Goa would be a better proposition
as they would be "exposed" to all the authentic stuff.

Forming a regional body in addition to city/state goan associations
is a futile exercise. It is a duplication of efforts, waste of time
and money in unnecessary expenses and I am certain many associations
would not "buy" the idea.

The 1988 International Gaon Convention (IGC) surfaced the subject
of forming a Federation of all Goan Associations - a kind of
"umbrella" global organization to co-ordinate the activities.

The IGC pointed out that goan associations should digress from being
mere organizers of social events, and instead attempt to grapple with
social issues pertaining to goans and Goa. They also slated
GOAS whose oficials/executive committee members are not
democratically elected. Unfortunately, the Federation issue never
got off the "ground".

London-based Rene Barretto- the co-ordinator of World Goa Day-
re-surfaced the subject last year, and requested several
goans associations to discuss it at their levels. Unfortunately,
many associations did not respond - in some cases ostensibly so as
the subtle details were not elaborated on. I do not know who is
going to make the next move and suggest the formation of a national
body.

There is no yardstick for comparing goan associations to other
social organizations run by immigrants from Europe -many of whose
ancestors have lived in the country for close to two centuries
and invariably number over a million people. The Groups you
mentioned are "Chapters" of National Bodies and in some cases, the
officials are either full-time or part- time employees with a few
on a volunteer basis.

You seem to be under the false impression that many committee members
have a lot of free time to organize an event every month. Most
committee members belong to other goan groups ,help Goa and goans-
directly and indirectly, and also volunteer with their
church groups and other community organizations.

Getting people to support events is one great problem, but getting
volunteers to assist at functions is another hassle. And why would
a Christian goan want to attend Diwali which is a Hindu religious
festival; would Hindu goans attend an Easter or Christmas event
organized by Catholic goans ?. (That is why both goan groups in
New York and New Jersey do not celebrate spring flings anymore
given the poor turnouts).

Organizing a major event like a picnic or dance needs a lot of
planning and meetings, and given a shortage of volunteers, some
associations are restricted in organizing the number of events
per year.

Goans have been travelling long and short distances to attend events
and the organizers have welcomed them with open arms and shown
appreciation for gracing the occasion.

You seem to be obsessed with the native groups confining themselves
themselves to their old cliques. This is a Toronto "cancer" and
pertains only to this Canadian metropolis given the large groups
of goans who immigrated from all corners of the globe. This is not a
problem of the committee members- who merely run the association on a
voluntary basis- but the overrall members per se. If the members
do not want to change their attitude, what can the committee members
do.

Like the New England Goans picnic, many GOAs have open picnics
requesting people to bring food and drinks. I attended two picnics
in late August in New York and Organizers of both picnics went up a
Few "notches by serving soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Organizers at both picnics gave advanced notice with repeated
postings on the goanet website in addition to informing relatives and
friends individually - thru electronic email. This gave all those
interested picnic goers in the tri-state area ample time to work
around their rigid social calendars.

Any person or organization can place his posting on the goanet at any
time , and have it repeated many times.. I do not undertand how
regional co-operation could be more effective than that.

rgds.

Tony.

Cecil - your posts often make me laugh but this one send me into nostalgia.
Until I was in college, my sister and I made the long trek of some 5 buses,
two ferries and a taxi ride every summer from my beloved village of Verna to
my grandparents' home in Quitula, Aldona. Excitement was at its peak by the
time we reached Moira and we couldnt contain ourselves at the bus stop
while we waited for the taxi that would take us to Quitula. On seeing the
grand old home of my grandparents which I am glad you have included in your
tour, we had almost jumped out of the moving car! But I wasn't limited to
only Quitula - I have explored every bit of your lovely village because my
aunt, a teacher (and whose name brewed so much controversy and attack on
this forum - as usual!) was on election duty and tasked us with checking
every house and every member. We spent the entire summer doing that! And
finally I even had a stint in the St. Thomas Girls high School (Std 7th) and
I would love to know where many of my classmates are now! Especially a June

Hi Tony,

Thanks for responding to my post on the above subject. Beyond the
superficial, we agree a lot. We both emphasize the need to maintain strong
family and community ties, which as you have shown really helps in the
time of
a crises. So, if one lives in Paradise of Toledo, Ohio, or in the Big
Easy

of New Orleans, one then needs to make the effort and the trip to the big
cities to connect on a regular basis with family, friends and community
both
for mutual benefit and to expose the kids to Goan culture. Yet, the
efforts

have to be a two way street.

To move the concept of Goan interactions further, I would suggest that
city/state Goan associations should develop Regional Goan association
which
can then coordinate through a national body. This structure is used by
many
social organizations (Sons Of Italy or German American Club) as well as
many

professional organizations.

While every city/ state organization cannot celebrate all the Goan
festivities, coordination within their region will permit one or another
celebration in the area about once a month. This may be to celebrate
Blessed

Joseph Vaz feast or a carnival or a Divali. I have previously posted in
cyberGoa a list of about 10-12 Goa-specific celebrations, throughout the
year.

CHRIS COMMENTS;

Could you forward details re your suggestionsof Goa-specific celebrations
since I mjust have missed them. As a member of FRIENDS OF GOA NY/NJ I
would like to include these in our forthcoming programs.

GILBERT CONTINUES--

To encourage individuals to make the long ride and participate, when
outsiders

come, their efforts should be appreciated and they should be especially
welcomed at the social events. This, rather than the same old native
groups
confining themselves to their old cliques. That is where the committee
members

can help. After all, what goes around comes around.

You may have seen my post congratulating the New England Goans for
specifically inviting ALL Goans to their recent picnic. And this for the
entrance price of: Bring your own fun, excitment, food and drinks.

CHRIS CONTINUES--

We did something akin to what you describe at our Manoher Beach Park in Long
Island World Goa Day Picnic. The response and participation exceed all of
our expectations.

When

regional organizations cooperate, these celebrations can be posted well in
advance for all to enter the dates on their calendar of social
engagements.

Dear Fred & Herman:

I returned from Goa on Sept. 11th, after celebrating Dad's 100th birthday, on
Sept. 9th.

We attended a Thanksgiving Mass at 9 a.m. After which Dad thanked his friends
who were not able to join us at the reception later that evening.

The reception was held at Emerald Lawns. Dad typed his speech & my son, Conrad
had it re-typed in big block letters to make it easier for him to read. Dad
did very well in delivering it.

I thank you on behalf on my sisters, brothers & all our children.

God Bless!

- Subject: Gorgonio Lobo - 100th Birthday September 9, 2005 -

My parents, Angelo & Libania worked in Entebbe, Uganda, where I was born in
1905. I was the eldest of their 4 sons.

Although my parents & 3 brothers have gone to their eternal reward they have
left me with many happy memories and blessings.

In 1915 my parents returned to Goa. I joined St Joseph's High School Arpora in
1915 & achieved my Matriculation in 1923.

My first job in 1929 was as Clerk, with the Ministry of Health. I was
appointed to Hospitals in Jinja, Soroti, Masindi, Entebbe, Masaka & Kampala,
rising to the rank of Medical Superintendent.

In 1963, I retired after 34 years service with the Govt. After which I joined
the Kampala City Council as a Graduated Tax Officer, until 1971.

In 1936 I married Priscilla De Souza from Calangute. Together we had 5
children. As parents we fostered in our children a love for our Faith, the
importance of education, enjoyment of music & a sense of community

The upheaval following the seizure of power by Idi Amin caused the dispersal
of my family - Arthur & Judy to Perth Australia, Sybil & Alfred to Canada.
Bertha had married and joined her husband in Switzerland.

The opportunity to go to England or Australia were forgone as the pull of my
ancestrial home "water from my own well" was strongest. My wife & I returned
to Goa. Later we spent 2-1/2 in Perth with our family & many ex-Ugandan
friends.

After my return to Goa, I was able to contribute to the community teaching
violin & the organ & supporting the Parish of St Anne.

My contributions in Uganda: President & Founding Member of the Parent Teacher
Association in Entebbe & Kampala. Member of the Advisory Board of Asian
Education, Kampala; Member of the Central Goan Council & President of the Goan
Institute, Entebbe. Member of the Asian Widows & Orphans Pension Fund,
Kampala. Member of the Uganda Defence Force (2 yrs.) in 1941.

Many have asked the secret of my longevity. It is ultimately the Blessing of
God. However the constant use of mind & body kept me going, i.e. teaching
music, keeping up to date with current affairs, managing my own finances.
Maintaining a large home demanded a daily routine of activity.

Until 2003 I rode my scooter & drove my car to Mapusa & the church & in doing
so, maintained an independent lifestyle.

The regular visits from friends & their children has renewed the bonds of
great friendship we created & fostered in Uganda.

Sadly my wife of 67 years passed away on November 22, 2003.

I look forward to be a Centenarian as I target my 100th Birthday & would like
to request all my dear friends to participate spiritually in my Thanks-
giving Prayers to Almighty God for granting me a long lease of life.

I am happy to be celebrating my Birthday on September 9, 2005 in the company
of my children and grandchildren from Geneva, Switzerland, Perth, Western
Australia & Montreal/Toronto, Canada & friends.

May God Bless you all.

Good old Senhor Tom is out of touch of Goan realities. One cannot get
bird's eye view from Hongkong, unless you're born and raised in Goa before
1961.

Tom talks about Independence to Goa. We got rid of one Conquistador and
replaced with another Conquistador with the use of left over Indian British
Army with one bullet rifle in hand. Nehru and Gandhi told in UN that they
don't want any Europeans live close to Indian boundary, India will liberate
Goa and offer an Autonomy. Which we never got it. Entire Goa later after
invasion was annexed. Nehru told lies, hurt Goan intelligentsia and Goan
Patriots in Goa, which is a rare commodity available in Goa in this day and
age.

We have to liberate not only Dabolim but entire Goa. That average Goan
Hindu or Catholic Bamon, Chardo, Sudhir ou mar chamar caste minded comrade
is most untrustworthy element in our battle for freedom. They have no love
for Goa but for India.

India is not our problem, may be with few missiles we can make them to
surrunder unconditionally. But, the biggest challenge after winning war
with India, will face how to administer Goa? Given that Hindu and Catholic
rivalry, rivalry among caste minded people, corrupt minded Goans, I suppose
a fat chance.

[Goanet] Goa to invite bids for monorail project

2005-09-15 Thread Lawrence Rodrigues
Believe we should be asking Chief Minister Rane *WHY* the Konkan Railway
*Skybus* which costs approx Rs.45 crore per km; in other words, only two-thirds
the cost of the proposed monorail project, is not being considered. Land
acquisition, too, seems to be minimal with the *Skybus* project.

The difference is approx Rs.675 crore

A Statement of Responsibility Made in Public interest(In
Hindi)

(THE URBAN TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM)

The most precious asset in growing urban areas is the land. Allocation to
residential and commercial purposes put heavy pressures on land for public use
like parks and open spaces apart from very important and critical roadways.
Hardly 6% to a maximum of 18% of land in cities form roadways. The roadways once
laid- almost remain constant – at best- and may effectively reduce by
uncontrolled encroachments. The physical constraint of road area being constant,
as population increases, naturally loads on roads increase.

As more and more people from different habitats try to converge on to the
central business district, the road has no capacity to handle and congestions
erupt. Roads take one exactly to the point where one wants to go. But the
capacity is limited in terms of passengers per hour that can be handled. Even if
one considers only buses, need to maintain the braking distances between two
buses and the space maintained between them affects speed as well as limits per
lane what capacity can be achieved. When mass transit , that too at higher speed
is required, rail based systems only can handle.

Requirements of an ideal urban transport system:

Heavy concentrations of residential units coupled with required
movement to work places or to market places demand transportation of people.

Roads are to cater for the same. But roads have a limitation- the
area available remains constant, once the development is completed, and old
cities in particular throw up the problems of mismatch of designed capacity
versus the increasing pressure of populations.

Let us examine the various modes of transport that population uses
in a city and their capacities and limitations, to evolve requirements of urban
transport solution in a holistic manner.

Currently available solutions are either elevated railway or
underground railway if mass transportation is required:

Elevated railway technically cannot reach truly congested central
busy roads where the mass transport is needed. It is also too invasive and may
require dislocation of some portions of habitat as well as introduces noise
pollution.

Underground railway is less invasive on surface but still poses technically
challenging risks of fires and evacuations. It also has to address concerns for
foundations of heritage buildings.

If road vehicles are involved, in inter-modal transfers, it becomes
weak link in the chain of transport between walking and railway. Both modes
suffer from derailments and capsizing killing commuters.

Surface railway is impossible to lay in an existing city. But even
to lay the same in a new development, one should keep in mind what happens after
50 years of laying the same. We have living example of our own suburban system.
The city remains divided by the corridor and it is an eternal noise polluter in
the heart of city day in and day out. Sudden disgorging of heavy loads of
commuters at stations create need less congestion on the roads, reducing quality
of life. Almost close to 2000 persons die annually- because of trespassing or
falling from trains in our present system- whatever be the excuse and
justification for accepting the same. In addition vulnerable to minor vandalism
by urchins, but resulting in grievous injuries like losing sight for the
commuters. Again this mode cannot follow roads, so the weak link of road
vehicles has to be brought in for inter-modal transfers.

Derailments, collisions and capsizing concerns remain with loss of life for
all the above mentioned three systems.

The infrastructure created for urban transport is hardly utilized to 30 to 40%
capacity because of directional as well as inevitable peaks for limited hours
in a day. It has no other use and just idles.

An ideal solution is one which:

1. Follows the existing roads- but does not take road space- and be as
flexible as a bus

2. Have rail based mass transit capacity, same as existing rail metro

3. Does not divide city while providing integration along its alignment

4. Be derailment and collision proof- with NO CAPSIZING of coaches- so that
there can never be loss of life

5. Be free from vandalism

6. Noise free and pollution-free

7. Non-invasive -requiring the least amount of scarce land space- and not
come in the way of development.

Senhor Tom, very much a senhor, was born in Goa quite a bit before you were.
A year before I was.

About the Portuguese way-of-life in pre-1961 Goa there is not much you can
tell him.

His late Pappa, Dr. Carlos Elvino de Sousa was a member of the Legislative
Council of the Governo do Estado da India during multiple terms.

The governors and they were on mutual visiting times.

Coming down to retrieving Dabolim for covillian use, a struggle, such as
Churchill has launched, with an eventual Opinion Poll, it has to be
an-all-out

effort, but democratically fought; please pray hold you your missiles and
spare the windmills.

And pray, please do us a great favour and worthy and cherished spare our
Hindu friends your senseless, meaningless vitriol.

Let me assure you my dear Agnelo, without massive, selfless, indiscriminate
help from Goan Hindu-community, and to a large degree, by the strategy
mapped
out by them, our decisive victory in the anti-Maharashtra merger battle
would

have, at best, been stillborn.

And, you my very dear friend, who grew up, in Comba and environs, surrounded
and loved by your Hindu friends and peers, far more warmly than the nearby
Bahmons, should blush, if not ashamed, for your uncalled for tirades, lest
your bosom-friend, Inspector Rane phoenixes from his unrespected ashes.

Please accept this admonishment in the spirit it is imparted; at this stage,
if we

are to succeed in our endeavours you are most accutely needed, sans your
missiles, but certainly not without your million doubloons.

We will, both of us, go merrilly wind-mill hunting, in Hispaniola, after the
bog birds

are able, and allowed to freely roost in Dabolim.

Ever your friend,
Chacha Alfred

any Europeans live close to Indian boundary, India will liberate Goa and

We have to liberate not only Dabolim but entire Goa. That average Goan

most

untrustworthy element in our battle for freedom. They have no love for Goa

[Goanet] NEWS FLASH - Fr Pratap Naik SJ TSKK RESIGNS FROM GKA

2005-09-15 Thread godfrey gonsalves
In an interesting development and a literal boost to
the Konkani in Roman script movement, it is now
officially confirmed that Fr Pratap Naik, SJ, Director
Thomas Stephen Kendra, Porvorim a well known
researcher and the man spearheading the recognition
for Konkani in Roman script had indeed resigned on 5th
September 2005 as General Council Member from the Goa
Konkani Academy which was formed in 1984.

Fr Pratap Naik speaking to this writer, feels saddened
that the " people of Goa have been betrayed on the
script on 21st November 1981 ( and not as alleged
during the pre KPA movement days ) when a section of
the ONLY DEVANAGARI script Konkani infiltrated into
the ranks of the Advisory Board for Konkani of the
Sahitya Akademi New Delhi and "unanimously recommended
that Devanagari should remain the script for Konkani.
Till this date the GKA has not been able to convince
the Goans on who decided on the script" Fr Naik
stated.

Indeed the resignation according to Fr Naik "was
necessitated as the GKA paid stepmotherly treatment to
the cause of Roman script Konkani" .

This resignation apparently is in tune with the
demands of lovers of Konkani in Roman script that ALL
MEMBERS favouring the equal treatment of Roman script
with Devanagari script in Goa and who suscribe to the
view Unity in (Konkani) Diversity (in scripts) should
not remain in the organisations which subscribe to the
ONLY DEVANAGIRI SCRIPT .

When this writer brought this news to the public
coming as it is on the first day of the amateurs 31st
tiatr competition 2005-06 being held at the Kala
Academy beginning this evening there was great
rejoicing and several at the Kala Academy applauded
the stand taken by Fr Pratap Naik.

Fr Pratap Naik who has recently been to Mangalore to
attend the pro Kannada script for Konkani which has
gained tremendous support in Karnataka recieved a
boost for his efforts in Goa. The people of Karnataka
too believe that Devanagari should not be imposed on
them and they fully support the demand of Goans for
the Konkani in Roman script.

A report on the issue will be posted on the net
tommorrow.

Incidentally the resignation which was sent to the
Secretary, GKA has not been accepted and efforts to
ascertain the reason for the inordinate delay from the
Office of the GKA were futile.

There are unconfirmed reports that several others are
likely to follow suit as the signature campaign
carried out after the official sanction of the Church
in Goa is gaining grounds as per the last reports
received from the group spearheading the movement.

Meanwhile according to Mr Wilson Mazarello prominent
tiatrist and unanimously elected President of the
Dalgado Konknni Akademi who spoke to this writer this
morning confirmed that the tiatrist in Goa are one on
the issue and they have been building support as they
stage plays in the State even outside; "let it be
clear" he said "tiatrists will leave no stone unturned
to spread the message the days to come need to be
watched its now or never " he stated.

[Goanet] Singles Again Club - by Ethel Da Costa

2005-09-15 Thread Cecil Pinto

HEART TO HEART (SEPT 11)
BY ETHEL DA COSTA

To my 'Single Again' girlfriends, live life full!

"The pain which you sometimes feel in your soul is the birth of a new
insight. When your subconscious has born the new insight to term, you will
be wiser than you were before."

- The Beholder by Ken Lavendell

"I am not concerned about your worldly success, only you are.
It is true that when you achieve certain states of being over a long period
of time, success in what you are doing in the world is very difficult to
avoid. Yet you are not to worry about 'making a living.' True Masters are
those who have chosen to make a life, rather than a living.

"From certain states of being will spring a life so rich, so full, so
magnificent, and so rewarding that worldly goods and worldly success will
be of no concern to you. Life's irony is that as soon as worldly goods and
worldly success are of no concern to you, the way is open for them to flow
to you. Remember, you cannot have what you want, but you may experience
whatever you have. "

Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch

Going through my old files, dusting the dirt off paperwork and statistics
researching a story, I chanced upon a press statement released by the
National Family Health Survey which stated that the quality of life of Goan
women was below average. There was more depressing news in fine print for
the survey concludes stating widespread acceptance among married women
justifying abuse and violence at the hands of their 'pati-parmeshwars' in
their marital homes, despite their educational backgrounds. In Goa,
everything seemed fair in love and beating!

I am numb. And I am filled with pity for these poor creatures. I would like
to think these women are sane, that they can think for themselves and work
towards their empowerment. But are they really free off the chains they
voluntarily shackle their thinking abilities?

I'm not about to sit in judgment and underline the rights and wrongs in
their respective marital situations. But giving abuse - in any form - the
license of approval with silence is propagating a crime further in the face
of the future generation of women. After all, we don't want our young women
growing in the house to think that it's ok to be beaten black and blue by a
man she professes to love through the sanction of an institution, just to
keep society and its wagging tongues happy. Indeed, in some twisted way, to
keep themselves happy and secure.

I disapprove violence vehemently. And I disapprove men who think it's their
birthright to put a woman in her place through the use of physical or
emotional violence. I disapprove affected women sitting quietly and taking
this bullshit. I disapprove women who don't let other women take their
destinies and their own self-respect into their own hands and make a
successful life for themselves away from abuse. I disapprove women cackling
together about the trials and tribulations of other women who choose to say
'No' to abuse and venture towards singlehood. I disapprove these narrow
mindsets because these people live their own empty lives without goals,
that they cannot envision a better future for themselves. They have no
control over what they want, or the drive to go and get it for themselves
or how to love their own spirits freely and full-heartedly.

I meet many women who really don't know what they want. They live their
dreams through their men (if it works for them, good for them) and then
take abuse as an extension of their love for the man they are knotted with
till death. They live by a code of acceptance, turn their faces the other
way, lest they fall flat on their noses with no economic support to help
pull through the rest of their days.

I often wonder what lessons in life the 'accepting' abused women teach
their own girl children. Do they teach them to be independent? Do they tell
them how to be happy individuals? Do they teach them how to discover their
minds and use it for the benefit of their self-growth? Do they teach them
about dreaming? Do they teach them about survival? Do they teach them about
saying 'No'?

I have two girls and I'm extremely proud of them. They are learning stand
up for what they want. They are learning to differentiate between 'right'
and 'wrong.' They are learning to discover their own personalities (and
teach me a few home truths as well, and I like that). They are learning how
to accept the less fortunate and show compassion. They are learning how to
hold their heads high and never to think that they are less best than their
peers, because of a situation. Above all, they are learning to speak
against people who propagate wrongs. They are a handful alright, as their
own personalities shape up with the exposure of their environment. I can't
say much of the other children I observe (and this without prejudice) who
come from seemingly `happy' households, because their parents live in

Jaison White lands up in Churchill Bros camp
>From Armstrong Vaz

Margao Sept 14: Englishman by birth and Thailand citizen Jaison White
was impressed by what he saw on his first day at the Churchill
Brothers camp. Jaison White monitored each and every movement and every
move and counter move that the Churchill Brothers players made on
Wednesday morning at Varca grounds.

It was the first day in office and a first insight into the football
talents at offer at the Churchill Bros camp. Jaison was having a first
feel of Indian football from close quarters. His feedback of Indian
football had come from his good friend and the last foreign coach of the
Indian football team, Stephen Constantine.

"We are good friends," he informed while speaking to reporters at Ramada
Hotel at Varca on Wednesday afternoon.

Jaison has no immediate plans to join Churchill Bros. When asked to give
the date of his joining the club, he pointed out that he would be busy
with Indonesian national team looking after their fitness. Incidentally
he informed that his father is the coach of the national team of
Indonesia.

He went on to inform that his father had been coach of the Thailand
national team and now has been handed over the national assignment of
Indonesian team. The Indonesian team will be involved in an Asian
country level competition which will get over in November this year and
the next possible date of which joining the Churchill Bros club would be
in the month of December.

He informed that his last contract with a Thai club ended three months
back.

On opting out of Thail football and for looking at an opening in India,
Jaison, who was flanked by his wife, declared that he wanted "to move on
and take up new challenges".

"The Churchill Brothers assignment is a new challenge to me and I am
looking at a three year agreement with the club," he added. On Churchill
Bros team he has this to say, "Churchill Brothers is a young outfit. We
are looking for foreign players in the right positions. Indian football
players are good in physical aspects and can be molded into top flight
players."

Jaison is on a first visit to India and had been earlier to Pakistan and
Nepal along with the Thail club. He informed that he saw the national
Indian team play only once in Thailand two years and that was the only
time he saw the Indian players in action.

His coaching career, he disclosed, started at a young age of 18 when he
was just playing his competitive football and added that his competitive
football ended after an injury to his leg.

Like his friend Stephen Constantine, he too is undergoing his UEFA pro
license coaching course, which he informed will end in June 2006 and
also added that at the same time his FA fitness coaching course will end
in June 2006.

On foreign players known to him making it into the Churchill Bros camp,
he informed that he will get in touch with the players agent in Thailand
and get back to the Goan club. ENDS

Dear Alfred,

It is like this.

IF the Indian Navy considers Dabolim as one of the "spoils of war".

IF it believe that the Indian Navy came to Goa to participate in the
Liberation of Goa, it will Leave in Peace.

IF the Goa Government believes that it is elected to do the People's will,
It will request that Dabolim be vacated by the Indian Navy.

IF the Goa Government believes that it is elected to ONLY make Dineros for
themselves, It will find extra reasons to drag its feet.

I wager that after ALL this noise - very little will happen wrt Dabolim

After all, IF you rent out your house (offer a free room in your house) to
somebody ... what are the chances you will get it back?

With the huge area, occupied by the navy, made available for due

And the sooner the dreams of Mopa boom creating employment for

Who will benefit will be the incoming hordes of migarnt labour that will

If the liberation of Dabolim --and, Agendiva -- is beyond the scope of the

In a talking head clip on cable TV (local news telecast) ex-CM Parrikar
said
in effect: "Around the world it is easier to drive a foreign power out of
a

place than to get the local military to pull out" adding, " I challenge you
to give me even one example of the latter".

Alternatively, Parrikar would have found that at a big tourist/military
airport like Hawaii there is what is known as joint management of the
base/international airport. In India there is a lot of talk about 'flexible
airspace management'.

Frankfurt is another comparable example

Goa could have taken the lead in expediting the

materialisation of this arrangement which is acutely needed nationally
today.

These are some of the areas a Goa CM would be expected to know something
about and pursue with the Centre. But it would presume they have, to begin
with, a lively vision about the central importance in this day and age of
airports to the economy and society of a city and region.

Subject: [Goanet] Re: Proposed Mopa Replacement Airport.
Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 23:17:43 -0400

Proposed Mopa Replacement Airport.

Goa is moving forward as the central Government has proposed a new state of
the art airport at Mopa in Pernem.

The present Dabolim airport built around 1953 was just a simple airstrip
and
its main purpose due to the economic blocade with India and Portugal.
After

independence it was upgraded to enable large capacity flights to land in
Goa, but its status is nowhere near the international airports in other
parts of South East Asia including Singapore, Kuala-Lumpur, Hong Kong,
Manila, Taiwan and so forth.

The terminal building in Hong Kong International airport is 1.27 kilometres
long, and has international airline counters from A to Z, over 200
immigration counters, 14 belt conveyors for luggage handling, 60 link
bridges for the planes to land at the airport, a 5 star airport hotel,
cargo

handling, crew hotel, and two runways 3.8 kilometres long.

International airlines also need maintenace and there are two large
maintenace hangers, and the best restaurants and shopping arcades are in
the

terminal building.

The total area of Hong Kong is 1068 sq. Kilometres.
Judging from the above facts Mopa replacement airport can provide
employment

to a few thousand Goans during construction and when the airport comes into
service. The ground transportation including trains, buses etc are
essential as passengers cannot be late for their flights. The boom for
tourism will be excellent for Goa.

There is always a political touch for most of these projects, but we are in
a world of free enterprise and healthy competion it will enable the
consumer to get better value for their money and should only improve the
service industry.

[Goanet] Re: Aleesha, the Konkani movie

2005-09-15 Thread Daniel F.de Souza
Miguel,

It's indeed a sad story that such a good movie as 'Aleesha' is drawing very
few viewers in the theatres in Goa. When I saw the movie at Shivam in Vasco
on 4th Sept, I was stunned to see the poor response. I was tempted to do a
head count in the theatre. There were just about 55 people in all which
included atleast around 8 children.

It's a first konkani movie that has won a National award and Goans should
have been flocking to see the movie. But, sometimes our priorities are
totally misplaced. Nevertheless, Rajendra Talak deserves kudos for his
excellent film making talents. 'Aleesha' has a beautiful contemporary story,
sleek direction, excellent cinematography besides natural acting too. The
language and its script is rich. The handsome young hero in the film,
Thapan Acharya is incidentally also the lead actor in Prince Jacob's yet to
be released konkani film 'Padri' .

After seeing the film, I personally told several of my friends that they
should not miss seeing 'Aleesha' for the sheer joy of seeing a well made
movie. Just three days ago I even called up a few friends in Mapusa, Saligao
and Aldona telling them to go and watch the movie at 'Alankar' theatre .
They were not even aware that a konkani movie is showing in town.

Goans are seen complaining that no good konkani movies are being produced in
recent years, but, when films like 'Aleesha' are being screened in the
theatres across the State there are no sufficient viewers, not even good
enough to break even the cost of the screening. So much for the love of
KONKANI and GOENKARPONN. On the other hand third rate Hindi movies are
running to packed houses and if one cares to see, the majority of the
viewers are our very own GOENKAR BHAV-BHOINNIM.

It's a high time we do a re-think on our geniune love for our language and
its survival. Merely organising cultural events with food, wine, fun and
fiesta does not contribute in the least to keep the language alive! It's
only a day's extravanganzanothing concrete and lasting. Perhaps, if
efforts and ventures like these are supported and patronised by tru blooded
Goans, we can be assured that there will be another such project in the
pipeline soon. This is what will sustain the language in the long run.

With the making of 'Aleesha' a complete film (minus the songs and running
around the trees) konkani films seem to be scaling new heights.

Well done Rajendra Talak.a few more Talaks among us would do wonders to
keep our mother tongue kicking and alive for posterity.

Daniel.

[Goanet] Re: CHURCH SANCTIONS SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN FOR ROMAN SCRIPT ((K) PART I

2005-09-15 Thread Sebastian Borges
Dear Godfrey,

This is an interesting History that seems to be a
revised version of Fr. Pratap Naik’s work which
appeared earlier. But it is not an improvement. And
it cannot be helped; if a research guide like Fr.
Pratap can falsify historical facts, how can we expect
anything better from his disciple and that too a
novice amateur?

Still may one inquire about the basis for the
statement: “The Portuguese lent credence to merit by
worth not like this section of Hindu Brahmins who
believe merit by one’s birth not worth.” Everyone
knows that during the Portuguese rule the only
considerations were Caste and Religion in that order.
Try and prove me wrong by citing just one case of a
“lower caste” person who occupied any government
position during the four and a half centuries of that
rule. Leave aside the government, the Roman Catholic
Church was even worse. Would it have been possible
for Cardinal Gracias to have been even consecrated as
an Auxiliary Bishop had he been in Goa? Was “merit
by worth” the exclusive right of a particular caste?
Who is this “Sebastião ANDRE Dalgado” (see at
25-03-04) after whom the DKA is named? Did he publish
a single book in Roman script Konkani so that his name
could adorn an academy seeking justice for Roman
script Konkani? The only Dalgado connected with
Konkani that I know about was christened “Sebastião
RODOLPHO Dalgado” whom you have mentioned in your
para#5. But all his books are in Portuguese. He
translated Sanskrit classics and also made linguistic
studies on Indo-Portuguese and Luso-Asiatic dialects.
He also compiled two bilingual dictionaries and an
anthology of Konkani proverbs. These books were also
in Portuguese. He too did not write a singled book of
Konkani prose or poetry. But he did very clearly and
unambiguously declare that Devanagari, and not Roman,
is the correct script for Konkani. Therefore, his
name would have been the last that could have been
selected for an outfit that is clamouring from the
house tops that Roman script is the best suited for
Konkani. Perhaps this “Sebastião ANDRE Dalgado” fits
the bill. But what was he? What did he do to merit
this honour?

I hope to have clear answers to these questions.
Another of my questions – the meaning of “(Naik not
Nayak)” – is still begging for an answer. I shall
be grateful if any reader, who understands this, could
satisfy my curiosity.

Dear George,
I am in Goa at present for a wedding and very busy. I am open to judgjing
the competition along with Dom. A honor. If you find someone else, that
is fine too. But I will have to do it online.

I will be in India till Oct 3. Then from Oct 6 - Jan 4, I will be in Japan
doing a Japanese Woodblock Residency at Awajishima in Hyogo Prefecture,
and later visiting museums. After that I will be back in NY for a few days
before returning back to India till the end of Feb.

So will write back in a few days. Let me think about designing a stamp.
Its too hectice. One needs time for these things. But will certainly think
about it. Someone should look at commemorative stamps and pay attention
to sizes, etc. so artists understand process.
