[Goanet] Is he gay, or just happy to see you?

2006-05-06 Thread Cecil Pinto

Is he gay, or just happy to see you?
How to Identify Gays: Guidelines for Women
Cecil Pinto

A friend of mine, from London, recently related to me a curious predicament
she was facing. Apparently she was quite smitten by this charming guy at
her new workplace and wanted to ask him out on a romantic date.
Potentially, he seemed to be the perfect match - handsome, charming,
sensitive, well dressed, organised, well read, humorous, efficient, rich...
Her fear was that she might discover he was a homosexual. It had happened
to her many times before. What? I just couldn't believe this. What are the
chances of this happening? On making enquiries among my cyber friends
worldwide, I found out that this is a common occurrence in the West. The
most desirable men are gay! In Goa of course this is not a routine problem
because (1) Women rarely ask men out (2) The most desirable men are
heterosexual, happily married, and write humour columns!

So, as a favour for my friend, and womankind in general, I decided to
formulate a set of guidelines. Somewhat like "How to Tell if He is Gay".
It's a challenging task I have embarked on, but fortunately I have a few
articulate gay friends who are helping me in my mission. Below are sneak
previews of some of my initial discoveries. Keep in mind though that these
guidelines are not fool proof. No single factor mentioned below is a sure
fire indication of homosexuality, but if many of the signals occur in
conjunction then you could be on the right (or wrong if you're female!)
track. Remember these guidelines are meant for females who find a guy
interesting and want to know if he is gay. They are not meant for morally
warped gay bashers to identify and harass these guys of different
persuasion . Gay bashers have deep rooted security problems and are worthy
of only pity and contempt. Here goes...

1) If you think he's gay you're probably right: Trust your feminine
instinct. If your mind is still obscured by passion, ask an existing gay
friend of yours to observe your target and report back to you. His analysis
will be accurate. Gays have an inbuilt 'gaydar' that helps them 'home in'
and identify their own.

2) Do a lot of older women like him?: Gays are more attentive to mothers
and grandmothers, while straight men are more attentive to younger women -
for obvious reasons. If he's surrounded by older women he's probably gay.
On the other hand he could be a straight with an unresolved Oedipus complex.

3) Is he attracted to other men?: Observe how he reacts with other people,
especially strangers in public. If he's ogling women then he's straight. If
he's eyeing attractive men then he's definitely gay. If he's avoiding
looking at sexy women and looking at the latest bikes and cars, he could be
a straight man who has been browbeaten into submission by his
wife/girlfriend into denying his natural instincts. When will women realise
that straight men will always ogle attractive women? That is our nature. It
is pre-written in our genes! It has nothing do with being faithful. Oops! I
went off track again.

4) Interaction with staff: A gay man will be most courteous to
receptionists, waiters, doormen, hairdressers... even his own employees. A
straight man on the other hand treats his employees with disdain and barks
at them. This is especially true of nouveau riche businessmen.

5) Compliments: A gay man will always compliment you on some aspect of your
appearance or surroundings. They have an eye for detail and say stuff like
'luscious' to describe a warm yellow wall or use French sounding words like
'repertoire'. They even air kiss like the French. Apparently, anything
French is big with gays. Don't ask me why. A gay man will also identify the
exact brand of scent, or shade of nail polish or lipstick, you are wearing.
He might even go to the extent of advising you on how a different style of
bra would do wonders for your cleavage and bustline. On the other hand, he
could be a smooth straight operator trying to cop a feel.

6) Grooming and Living: If he's gay he probably will have a wide range of
expensive co-ordinated footwear for each carefully selected ensemble (his
words not yours) and a different scent for every occasion. A skincare
routine you've only read about in Cosmo, sculptured abs, great biceps - all
due to a strict gym and parlor regime. Dandy loud dressing of course is a
dead giveaway - but then he might just be an upcoming tiatrist, or a Mumbai
yuppie tourist. Gays will wear exactly fitting clothes, whereas straight
men always buy one size bigger. Gays rarely grow facial hair (unless it's
designer stubble i.e. 5 o'clock shadow George Michael style) and any body
hair is perfectly groomed.

7) Earrings, Limp Wrists, Hand Holding etc: Earrings on a male were once
considered a dead giveaway of gayness. That no longer holds good. I have a
very straight friend, who has four earrings on each ear and has fathered
two

[Goanet] Varca Murder Case: No Breakthrough Yet

2006-05-06 Thread JoeGoaUk
Varca Murder Case: No Breakthrough Yet

Postmortem report may shed some light.
Disclosing that the postmortem report is awaited and no further information is
available till the report arrives, SP (South) Shekhar Prabhudessai remarked that
Cruz, the hardware store owner, who has his shop below the deceased filomena’s
old
residence at Church View building, opposite Varca Church, was the last
individual to
speak to the deceased Filomena. (It has been informed that the post mortem has
been
postponed due to the overburden on the doctors at GMC, Bambolim with over half a
dozen bodies waiting in queue).

Filomena is believed to have spoken on the phone to Cruz, about her broken
washing
machine. The neighbours state that they heard the deceased talking on the
mobile
phone at around 9pm and that on May 4, at around 5am, saw a vehicle moving in
the
locality. The maidservant, Amman is reported to be employed for one hour daily
from
7-8am.

The new bungalow is learnt to have four sets of keys, while one was n the
possession
of Filomnea, the other is learnt to have been handed over to Cruz by Filomena’s
husband Malcolm, who retained the third set of keys and it is still unaware as
to
who is in possession of the last set of keys DySP Tony Fernandes informs.

Ironically, whilst SP Prabudessai claimed that the assailand may used a heavy,
blunt
weapon ‘like a hammer’, DySP Fernandes stressed, it was a sharp weapon like a
‘Koita’ or chopper that the assailant used to assault the face of the deceased
Filomena. (GT)

[Goanet] Traffic Improvement

2006-05-06 Thread John Eric Gomes
Someone from Dona Paula is wanting to know how to ACT/ do something
regarding the appaling state of Traffic in Goa. Well, the Bible says,
(John
12:47 )"If anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him."
Its true that merely writing about things/ bringing it to the notice of the
so called "concerned" authorities, and "honourable" elected reps,
who remain unconcerned and dishonourable , is frustrating. They have
"other" priorities.Great persistance and patience is required ,like the
waves lashing against the
rocks that are shattered into small drops. Yet another wave and another and
finally
the rock is ground to sand(Maybe not in our lifetime).
Its taken me ten years ( not months), to get the authorities to
demolish a wrongly located concrete Bus stop .It was supposed to be
demolished after a new
fibre glass one was put in place.I even provided a sponser. Now there is no
Bus Stop at all, and the other existing signs removed, before new ones are
correctly put in place. No Parking signs, dividers are in the pipe line.
Then will , hopefully ,come the enforcement follow up. Indisciplined
traffic does not slow down before Zebra crossings, or when approaching
junctions/islands.So rumblers /speed breakers are required to save lives.
Traffic Police priority is issuing challans to two wheelers without
helmets. In the meantime so many deaths and accidents have occured, but our
system protects those who are responsible. No one can easily be made
accountable. The Courtsmaybe you will require two lifetimes. Officers/
dealing hands are transferred and there is no procedure followed for handing
over/taking over properly.
I have a Traffic file, letters, copies to Sardinha when he was
Chief Minister, Parrikar, Traffic authorities, Notifications(not
implemented), Magistrates orders (not
implemented). Kiran Dingra trying to do something(Transferred), Ive seen the
present Chief Sec, and present Collector North Goa are sincerely trying
to
get things moving. Many Officers have tried to coordinate the various
authorities namely Traffic Police, PWD, PWD(Highway), Panchayats ( Junction
at OCoqueiro/Chogm road needs consultation with 5 panchayats), Collector,
Magistrates. So much waste of time, effort, expense. Its maddening. Director
of Public Grievances (PG)gets letter from DG Police complaining Village
Panchayat Succour is not cooperating ! The said Deputy DG (PG)admits they
have no powers to enforce anything. He only writes letters forwarding , for
reply at the earliest, which in official parlance means nothing. Most
Immediate and Top Priority ( Both stamped same page)letter from Panaji takes
8 days to
reach me at Porvorim! Private Bus operators cannot be made to change their
ways. Taxis will not use meters etc.So can we judge the authorities in
this government system that thrives on mediocrity with power and corruption,
and forces even honest citizens to do wrong to survive?

this system that forces even honest citizens to do wrong things .

Subject: [Goanet] Why do we nod?

Hi all

Just a curious question. Would appreciate if someone can give an answer.

Why do we people of sub continent especially India, whenever we say YES or
NO, we shake our heads or Nod our heads?

It came to my notice only when some Arab friends I work with used to tease
me when I used to do that and say Why you Indians shake your head so much?

Is it because our country is famous for barath Natyam dancing and somehow
unconsciously this action has become part of us?

Pls someone can shed some answer to this query?

Cheers

[Goanet] who is NRI?

2006-05-06 Thread Eugene Correia
The Emirates Evening Post carried an interview with
Indian Minister for Overseas Affairs, Vayalar Ravi, in
Friday's edition. I will scan and post it on Sunday.
A sidebox to the story.
At a luncheon hosted by the Indian Business and
Professional Council, a business, Vashu Shroff, asked:
"Who are NRIs? Businessmen like us or poor labourers?
They have genuine problems, which need to be
addressed. We don't have such problems but are
complaining. We have money to solve our issues but
labourers find it difficult to ear their bread and
butter here and also face problems back home."
--
Excerpts from the Interview

Ravi said that the introduction of the Smart Card,
which was to be introduced by Sept, would have to be
extended as the formalities may not be completed by
the deadline. Smart CAr wil meke it easier for NRS to
enter or exit the country.
On the status of the Protector of Emigrants Office, he
said the offices have been fully computerized. "All
our embassies can access labourer records in a
fraction of a second. This has made the office's
functioning effective and check malpracties"
He was asked what the government is doing regaridngt
the "growing prostitution racked in the Gulf" with
reference to singles women coming into the region.
His reply: We are working on this issues with various
organisations like the National Women's Commission. We
suggest that women avoid coming here alone. We won't
allow single women below the age of 30 to come
here."

He said he has recieved lots of complaints, mostly
from Saudi Arabia and Muscat, regarding this issue.

He advised Indian labourers not to resort to protest
like the one witnessed in Dubai very recently against
one company. He said the government would also take up
the issue of sponsors/emplouers keeping the labourers'
documents with them.

I believe the "documents" are passports.

[Goanet] Darryl passes away

2006-05-06 Thread Fausto

Darryl no more
On August 14, Darryl Crasto, TOI's senior sports journalist passed away
after battling pneumonia for two weeks. Hockey was Darryl's favourite sport:
a game he played in school and college, and wrote on with passion. He had a
legacy to live up to: two of his uncles, John and Joe Crasto.
>From his early days at the Free Press Journal to the Indian Post, the
Observer Group, the Independent and finally TOI, he wrote endless pieces on
the state of hockey in the country, unafraid to take a stand or call a spade
a spade. No official or mandarin was spared. But he was extremely popular
with the players and this was evident as a number of them, some of whom
would never even have seen Darryl, lined up to donate blood over the past 12
days.
Hockey was his forte, but Darryl was equally at ease with billiards and
snooker, tennis, football and cricket.
Forty seven is simply too young to die. But Darryl lived and enjoyed every
moment of his almost three-decade-old journalistic career to the fullest. He
will be remembered by his friends, colleagues and sportsmen as a generous
and kind person, who played by the rules, and was always ready to lend a
hand. In short a jolly good fellow. May his soul rest in peace.

[Goanet] Floriano's Sunday Ramblings - 3

2006-05-06 Thread floriano
This week has come up with a big 'S' in surprises, shocks, suggestions
etc. with many a bold headlines in the news papers.

As if we need old festering wounds opened up, the Honourable Justices of
the Supreme Court are seen to be hallucinating when they say "A time has
come for total prohibition of liquor" (NT-May 4, 2006). The moment anybody
talks of liquor prohibition, I remember our enterprising PM, Mr. Morarji
Desai who hated liquor enough to prohibit its consumption while his own son,
Mr. Kantilal Desai was a liquor baron. A travesty indeed. Thousands of
people have died and are still dying by consuming illicit distilled liquor
(moonshine; bootleg; hooch; navsagar you name it) even when liquor is open.
Entire compartments of trains in Mumbai have been transporting hooch
distilled in swampy areas and hidden in tyres. Whenever I hear about
prohibition of liquor, I remember the scene from 'The Good, The Bad, The
Ugly where the man with the noose around his neck and about to be plunged,
uses his last wish to curse the liquor bottle which sent him to the gallows.
Shakti Kapoor is another example who drank like a fish and even peed on the
Goa Marriot's lawns in open view of everyone. Do the Justices mean to say
that this would not happen if liquor was prohibited? On the contrary, the
guy in the movie or Shakti for that matter would pass out drinking hooch
right into the coffins saving the trouble for the hangman or the Marriot's
lawn keeper. Rather than prohibiting liquor, let the good Justices come out
with clear-cut directives to the Central and State Governments to use a
percentage of the huge revenues made from the sale of liquor to bring
awareness to the people of the ill effects of liquor through print and
audio visual media. The good Justices must know that prohibition of any sort
has NEVER WORKED.

'Form apolitical peace committees at ward level: Ribeiro' NT- May 4, 2006.
This is a good try, but as I see it, this is a complete waste of time, Julio
Ribeiro or no Julio Ribeiro. The need of the hour is the 'WILL' of any
government/s to abolish practice of religion in illegally built places of
worship and all government offices coupled with non-vote-bank policies where
anyone crossing the Laxman-Rekha line of religious discipline must be sure
of losing the skin off the backs. In this respect, the sub-editorial
"Illegal Shrines- Need to Set Some Criteria" is highly appreciated. (NT-May
6, 2006) . The writing on the wall which all politicians and religious
leaders fail to see and acknowledge is that RELIGION is the number one
culprit of all death and devastation throughout the world. It needs
regulating so it does not interfere with others, democracy or no democracy.

'NCP urges government to keep check on foreigners buying land' (in Goa) -
NT- May 4, 2006.
This is indeed funny coming from the Goa NCP, for this particular Party's
Goa unit must know that foreigners have somehow managed to buy Goans first,
and, it is but natural that their lands will follow suit. Why get gray over
matters like these? I wonder if Rajan Ghate, the NYC leader has had this
press note vetted by Dr. Willy himself before handing it over to the press,
considering that Dr. Willy is sightseeing in Dubai. It is wrong for a crab
to walk backwards and want its off-spring to walk forward. Is it now !.

And a word about Dr. Willy being in Dubai to sell Goa to Tourists. It is a
shame for such a wasteful adventure. He would have been better off cleaning
the beaches of Goa of the terrible litter. If he has no innovative ideas
any more, he could use me free of cost with the right post and I would
ensure that the earliest bird on Goan beaches would be hard pressed to
find a single plastic coffee cup or what-have-you on the beaches even if it
was required to save someone's life with the sands remaining that way
throughout the day.

'Dabolim and Mopa are complementary' - Editorial NT- May 4, 2006.
More than Rear Admiral S.M. Vadgaokar (Navy's Flag Officer Commanding Goa),
Mr. Arun Sinha must know that it is not easy to fool Goans all the time. No!
Dabolim and Mopa are not complementary. I consider Mopa to be a Sin. The
Navy wants Mopa at all cost and is seen to be working tirelessly towards
this end. Why? Because it has fallen in love at first sight with Dabolim and
wants to elope with it. With Mopa around, the Navy will be able to tie the
ultimate knot with strategic Dabolim, consummate and multiply its brood.
Goans will never allow this to happen and the Navy is bound to go away to
Sea Bird, Karwar or wherever with a heavy, broken heart. But if Goans do
allow the Navy to have its way, which is unlikely, just like they allowed it
to walk away with Anjedive Island, then for sure, Goans will not be Goans
anymore. And Arun Sinha will have had his last laugh.

And lastly, the talk of India, THE SAD DEMISE OF PRAMOD MAHAJAN. I concede
that Mahajan has been getting nothing but highly acclaimed reviews all round
despite his ow

His interaction with the navy will, however, be the longest as he will
be spending almost 24 hours on the aircraft as it sails towards
Mumbai, where the prime minister will disembark Saturday afternoon.

During the voyage, the prime minister will witness activities ranging
from the Sea Harrier jump jets taking off and landing, missile firing
and elements of submarine warfare.

"We will be using the opportunity to explain to the prime minister the
three dimension combat prowess of the navy and how this can be
leveraged to further the country's geo-strategic objectives," a naval
officer explained.

Escorting INS Viraat during the voyage will be the newly-acquired
Talwar class stealth frigates, as also the Brahmaputra and Godavari
class frigates and Delhi class destroyers.

The prime minister's wife Gursharan Kaur and Defence Minister Pranab
Mukherjee will accompany Manmohan Singh on the voyage, which comes
three months after President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam went on a submarine
off Visakhapatnam.

The trip had originally been planned for October. It was first
postponed due to the wrist surgery Manmohan Singh had to undergo and
then by the serial blasts in Delhi and the visits of the French and US
presidents.

[Goanet] Re: Indian Embassy introduces machine-readable passports

2006-05-06 Thread Alan Dias
These machine readable passport from Indian Embassy do not support the hypen
character and the apostorphe.

If your surname is D'Souza or Costa-Souza the passport is printed as D Souza
and Costa Souza. Effectively this means that your name differs in the birth
certificate and passport.

These were introduced in Goa early this year. Attempts to correct ones name
(if you have a - or ') at the passport office is futile.

Those who apply for student visas later or jobs abroad for work permits will
certainly have issues.

2006-05-06 Thread cornel

Mario
Like most things that come from you, I am highly sceptical that, "if you
visit Portugal you will see that almost all their surnames were copied from
us Goan Catholics" :-)). Your smiley at the end of your statement, as
above, does not amuse me at all as I am more interested in the authenticity
or not of your above statement. So, please explain, without a smiley, how
Catholic Goans got Portuguese names in the first place, if not from the
Portuguese who baptised mainly Hindu Goans as well as ruled Goa for 451
years? In this process, I believe that Hindu surnames were forsaken for
Portuguese surnames. This is indeed the conventional wisdom on this issue.
However, I and I'm sure others on Goanet, await your scholarly input on my
specific question above.

With much anticipation,

[Goanet] IVRS Service commissioned on Konkan Railway

2006-05-06 Thread Lawrence Rodrigues

See
http://www.konkanrailway.com/website/press_2005/press_IVRS_05-05-2006.htm

3rd May, 2006

PRESS RELEASE

IVRS SERVICE COMMISSIONED ON KONKAN RLY ROUTE

Now passengers travelling by Konkan Railway trains need not arrive
early at station and wait in queue for getting information about the
status of their ticket or to find out accommodation availability for a
particular train. Keeping in mind the need of passengers, Konkan
Railway has introduced IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) on its
major stations in order to enable people to get telephonic information
at ease. The IVRS has been opened at Ratnagiri, Madgaon , and Udupi
stations.

For Ratnagiri, Madgaon and Udupi stations, the BSNL number in the same
exchange area is 1330. For accessing information from outside the
exchange area and from cellular phones, the numbers are 02352-22
(Ratnagiri), 0832-2700730 (Madgaon), and 0820-2524533 (Udupi).

The information is available in local, Hindi, and English languages.

Hi Nasci
Many thanks for the exchange of info on different delicacies. I did spend
time on the lazy Yarra and enjoyed Melbourne very much, Christmas 2003,
even though it was incredibly cold that year. In contrast to London and UK
cities generally, Australian cities are remarkably lacking in congestion and
most pleasurable for visits. Your population of 20 million contrasts sharply
with some 60 million in a much smaller UK and you have all the space and
varied landscape one could wish for, including around hot and very dry
Uluru, (spelling?), lovely red earth, just like parts of Goa. I'd like to
visit OZ again and may do so in April 2008 taking in Western Australia for
the first time.

Hi..

"Why do we nod"
I can say - Because actions speaks louder than words.

Hi all
Just a curious question.

Dear Jerry,

Have you ever heard the following jokes?

Why do Jews breath?
Why do African-Americans have chickens in their yard?

I won't tell you the punchlines. Do you know why?
Because they are racial slurs. In the same vein, this
so-called "nodding" of the head is a racial slur
propagated by Arabs and Brits alike in the Gulf
region, to demean Indians and make them feel as if
they are stupid.

No doubt Indians, especially from the South use this
particular head gesture but so do a lot of ethnic
groups use gestures particular to their culture.

Next time an Arab or any one makes references it,
please don't be party to this insult. If you don't
stand up for yourself as an Indian, no one else will.

[Goanet] GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ ===an NGO launched

2006-05-06 Thread godfrey gonsalves
The threat to Goan Identity was never felt to the
extent that it is being felt today. At last count an
alarming 33% of the population of Goa constitutes the
migrants or better known as "bhaile" threatening the
demographic composition of this beautiful State. To
add to this cancerous malaise Goan disunity caused by
the invisible indelible "Great Indian Caste divide"
the traditional Goan "Bhatcar" - "Bhageli"(partner) or
the "Batcar-Mundcar" syndrome and the last potion
strains of polarisation on communal lines which
threatens the foundataions of "Goan tolerance"
unwitnessed in the rest of the country does not bode
well for "NiZ Goemcars" if Goans do not shed their
differences -- at least in public.

With this in mind Margao in Salcete South Goa, the
bastion of Goa's political cultural and commercial
centre witnessed today evening at 1645 6th May 2006,
at a well attended function at the Gomant Vidya
Niketan the launching of "Goenkarachem Daiz " a trust
-- Daiz samballunk ani Goenkarponn rakhunk
--"Goenkarponn ani amchem girest daiz samballpak
ompil'li sonstha" -- to protect preserve and promote
the unique Goan culture and its identity.

And who among Goans could have visualised this need
better. It took Mr Antonio Piedade da Moraes, a
dimunitive, lean bespectacled, casual dressed,
publicity shy "Konkani mogi" whose passion for Konkani
led him to possess a treasure trove of literary works
books numbering well over 2000 books of his
collection. He felt it necessary to make them
available for posterity to Generation Next to help
preserve and promote our culture our identity and that
of Konkani language the soul of Goan culture. To
satiate his passion it was left to Mr Alfino Fernandes
to support the mission of Mr Morais by providing a
spacious premise at MIDAS TOUCH Apartments bang
opposite the District Court of Margao. Following this
other furniture and fixtures were liberally donated
and the trust Goenkaranchem daiz took shape in 2005.

The inaugural launch began belatedly with an excellent
presentation by Dr Nandakumar Kamat an
environmentalist now with the University of Goa on
GOALOGY Goem Vidheaxastr. It shows the Goa in its
right perspective right from early invasion of Homo
sapiens to the pre colonial era the colonial era and
the post colonial era. Truly Goans would have loved to
revisit his presentation. It was a tremendous hardwork
put in true and just put forth before the public in a
nut shell .. What with satellite imagery from google
earth and pictures notes all rolled in . But the power
point presentation though announced by him to be for
just twenty five minutes extended well beyond an
University lecture ( he is familiar with ) and needed
the moderator Dr Savia Veigas, an activist of Musuem
Heritage a member of the Indias first State Knowledge
Commission, who has returned to Goa after 25 years a
native of Carmona Salcete Goa, to abruptly put an end
to his unending discourse which hurt the ego of Dr
Kamat and his usual arrogance was let loose on the
organisors. The audience of course did not take kindly
to his longish discourse, and cheered Dr Veigas. dr
Veigas agreed with most of the presentation made by Dr
Kamat but she felt that what is needed is that
Identity culture should move into the villages. She
herself had risen from humble beginnings having been a
child of a sea-farer and learnt under the candle
light. In her village the influence of tourism has
alienated the villager. The village child was at the
cross roads neither good in English nor his own mother
tongue Konkani. She was profusely applauded for
these observations. Just two questions did not merit
much attention.

Later Miguel Cotta of "Goencho Naad" fame and his
family gave an unique musical traditional songs and
mando treat to the audience. This was followed by a
musical group led by Arch. Carlos da Veiga and a final
song by Dr Francisco Colaco Cardiologist and family --
songs to the tunes of late Chris Perry.

Mr Ramnath Shirodkar gave a solo musical rendtion in
Konkani using the mouth organ.

But the audience went into a musical frenzy tapping
their feet clapping hands to strums and beat of songs
by famed tiatrist composer singer of yester years, the
80 year old (9/9/1925) Mr Remedios Januario Colaco
lovingly known as Remmie Colaco from the Novas
Conquistas Sanvordem Goa; and another song from Dr
Gopal V Naik widely known as Dr G V NAIK.
Incidentally both Dr G V Naik and Mr Remmie are age
old friends and know share a Doctor patient
relationship. Their relics relate to a word of
caution to Goans to unite to protect out Goan
identity.

Earlier Mr Edwin Pinto read the aims and objectives of
Goenkaranchem Daiz ( membership Founder Member
Rs.5000/- and Life Member Rs 1000/- forms were
available at the venue.

Dr Zahir Qazi an ex student of Goa Medical College in
the early eighties a native of Ponda in Goa cherished
his love for Goa and things Goan by narrating several
incidents which embodies the Goan identity

[Goanet] FN SOUZA: A MAVERICK PAINTER

2006-05-06 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
A MAVERICK PAINTER
KHUSHWANT SINGH
The Telegraph - Calcutta
Saturday, May 06, 2006

Painting by F.N. Souza, oil, 1987 "I was born in Goa in 1924. My
grandmother and grandfather were both chronic drunkards." So begins a
short autobiographical note appended at the end of Francis Newton Souza:
Bridging Western and Indian Modern Art by Aziz Kurtha. He does not tell
the reader more about himself. His father was a teetotaller who died
early leaving behind a young widow, a daughter who died soon after
himself and Newton. The mother moved to Bombay to earn a living as a
typist and by stitching clothes. Newton learnt how to stitch his
trousers' buttons. He had no training as an artist but he drew obscene
pictures of nude women in school lavatories. His teachers spotted him
because no other boy had the same gift of drawing as he. While still at
school, Newton decided to become an artist despite his aversion to the
smell and look of paint coming of a tube; it reminded him of slimy
serpents. In 1949, he migrated to London. He had very little money. He
was able to survive because of the bounty of people like the poet
Stephen Spender and Harold Kovnen, who bought everything he painted and
lent him money when he ran out of it. He does not tell us anything about
the women in his life. Apparently, there were quite a few. There was his
Goan wife, who ran a small art shop where she continued to sell her
husband's pictures even after he divorced her. There was his mistress,
Liselotte Kristian, who bore him three daughters without marrying him.
>From the many paintings he made of her, it appears that she must have
been the one real love of his life. In the book there is one of Lila,
as he called her, in the nude when she was pregnant. It is in water
colour and gouche. It is one of the most beautiful nudes that I have
ever seen. He apparently refused to sell it. It is a masterpiece but
its whereabouts are not divulged.

Souza's paintings went through three different phases. To start with,
his themes were Biblical: Madonna and Child, the Last Supper,
Crucifixion, resurrection and so on, then he turned to Hindu iconography
of South Indian bronzes and erotic sculptures of Khajuraho, Konarak and
other temples. Women in these paintings become full bosomed, broad
hipped, with large buttocks. He developed what can be best described as
vulva-fixation, explicitly depicting women's private parts. An element
of lust becomes manifest. During the period finally in Europe he was
exposed to works of European as well as avante-garde painters: Cezanne,
Titian, Courbet, Picasso, the Cubists and Dadaists. Souza combined all
three in his most productive phase to become the pioneer of modern
Indian art. M.F. Husain recognized him as his mentor. His paintings
were bought by the Tate Gallery and Albert and Victoria museums. He had
one-man exhibitions in London, Paris and New York. On one of his home
visits he was taken ill in Bombay and died on March 28, 2002. He was 78.

Aziz Kurtha is a solicitor practising in Abu Dhabi and London. He is as
involved in fine arts as in law. Earlier, he published a collection of
erotic drawings left by the calligrapher, Saadquain, who made his living
making artistic versions of the ayats of the holy Quran. He was, at the
same time, a hard drinker and shared Newton Souza's vulva obsession.
With every two drawings, he appended a verse of Urdu poetry composed by
himself in praise of women's pubic hair like an oasis amid sand dunes of
flesh. Kurtha asked me to translate them into English - which I did.

He invited Souza to Abu Dhabi, kept him as a house guest and arranged an
exhibition for him. Souza did not find many buyers for his art. His
paintings of village women is as, if not more powerful, than Amrita
Shergill's. Kurtha has made amends by producing a lavishly illustrated
coffee-tabler of the best of Newton Souza's paintings. It is a veritable
feast for the eyes.

Goa's Night(driving)Mares!

By Valmiki Faleiro

Time was when experienced drivers preferred night driving, esp. long distance.
It was better -- and in ways, safer -- than by day. In an era when Indian cars
and air-conditioning didn't coexist, night was pleasanter. Night permits
sensing oncoming traffic ahead of curves (from headlamp beams), unlike day.
Tyres don't heat as much as during day.

Night driving today can truly be a nightmare. It can even be treacherous,
hence best avoided. Incidence of drunken driving is undoubtedly higher during
night. Overstretched commercial drivers dozing off at the wheel late
night/early morning is becoming common. Worst of the lot is the *one-eyed
jack.*

While traffic police sleep and the rare night *nakabandi* overlooks, the tribe
of one-eyed Jacks rules the road. Having one headlight dysfunctional is bad,
having the driver's side one is disaster. A major tragedy I remember happened
at the doorstep of Cuncolim, about 30 years ago. Some youths returning home on
motorcycles from a night movie at Margao, mistook the single working headlight
of the oncoming Karwar car for a two-wheeler. The crash left only mangled
corpses. The latest was on NH-17 at Guirim, when a Ratnagiri registered truck
mowed down a 34-year businessman from Mapusa, his wife and their 10-year son,
Zahid. I saw a state-owned Kadamba Corporation bus zooming towards Panjim, ALL
its driver-side lights out of order, days after the Guirim tragedy!

If lack of essential lighting forms one end of the spectrum, all kinds of
fancy spot/search lights, halogen bulbs and other dazzling accessories (which
in fact are banned under the Motor Vehicle Rules 105-111) bring up the other
end of Goa's ghastly nighttime rainbow.

Night driving is as irritating as by day, for different reasons. Most
motorists don't seem to know the basics of headlights use. That one must dip
the beam for oncoming traffic, that one must not follow vehicles with full
beam, that one must not flash headlights except to signal an oncoming driver
to dip his beam or to indicate to the driver ahead one's intention to overtake.

Our driving schools are obviously oblivious that full beam is never used on
roads with street lighting. That in brightly lit metro roads, only parking
lights are used. That parking lights must be left on when parking in dark or
dimly lit areas. That fog lamps have no use whatsoever in largely fogless Goa.
That the continuously flashing *Distress Lights* must be pushed only when in
real distress, like brake failure, to caution other road users -- not when one
is in some cheery mood to distress others!

A Portuguese time rule had the upper one-third of headlight lenses painted
black. An IPS officer not long ago had mooted the idea of getting corporates
and car companies sponsor black stickers for car lenses. But my knowledgeable
friend, Antonio Pinto of Benaulim, disputes its efficacy in reducing full beam
dazzle. We have the farce of *Pollution-under-Control* annual certification,
none such for headlights -- when most auto dealers have computerized headlight
calibration facilities, seldom used!

There are ways of coping. Drivers look directly INTO oncoming headlights and
get themselves momentarily blinded. Ignore oncoming beams, concentrate on your
side of the road, keeping a general sense of oncoming traffic movement. Never
outdrive the reach of your headlight beam, upper or dipped, esp. on unfamiliar
roads ... surprises may have been left behind by our 101+ road *digging
specialist* agencies. On ghats, flash headlights at blind turns. If you don't
have fog lamps in a fog, dip the lights -- full beam will only dazzle you!
(Wish Goa was forever under nighttime fog!)

Be particularly wary of cyclists: they neither have the colonial dynamo-
charged headlamp (an impracticable idea today, when ramshackle cycles without
expensive dynamos get lifted!) nor the inexpensive rear reflector. Why, even
bullock carts are by law mandated to hang a lantern from the undercarriage.
Sadly, Goa's bullock cart, like the *carreira* and *caminhao* of yore, is
extinct, even if the *gadekars* took away the carts and forgot the bulls and
buffaloes to patrol Goa's highways by night :-)

TAILPIECE: Together with some friends, I almost became history a long time
ago. We were on NH-4, past dusk, returning by car from Kolhapur to Belgaum.
Aleixo Sequeira (yes, the ex-Industries Minister and current MLA), our expert,
was at the wheel. On a straight stretch by a *beedi* factory just before the
Nipani hill, a bullock cart came into our headlight view, proceeding in the
same direction. The cart, obviously, didn't carry an undercarriage lantern. A
truck was speeding from the other end. At about 80 kms/hour, Aleixo decided he
had space to overtake the cart before the truck could kiss us. He shifted
gears and began to overtake. Just then, we horrifyingly realized that it was
not a lone cart, but an entire car
