To Mario and Muriel. Lourdes Convent certainly deserves all help it can get from all quarters.. In Goa nothing gets done without a flip from the concerned Minister. If my memory serves me right, the Power Minister is Aleixo Sequeira who was a chief guest at an environmental function at LCHS a while back. I am sure the nuns have his phone numbers. What I am suggesting they along with the Saligao people get together and besiege Aleixo with phone calls and emails and postcards. Anything to wake him up from his slumber. [Goanet] A Happening-Kodel, Kutre ani Kinetic :16th December , 4-6:30pm outside Gallery Gitanjali
KODEL, KUTRE ANI KINETIC On the 16th of December, 2011 just before the beginning of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Goa’s liberation, Gallery Gitanjali invites you to engage with a ‘happening’. Created by Manjunaath Naik and Osborne Carvalho and conceptualised and curated by Miriam Koshy- Sukhija, “ Kodel, Kutre ani Kinetic” integrates sculpture, video, street art and performance into a searing multimedia happening. What is a Happening? It is an art form in which an action is extracted from the environment, replacing the traditional art object with a performative gesture born out of everyday life. It operates by creating an asymmetrical network of surprises without consummation following the logic of dreams. It walks the tightrope between drama and visual art inviting a strong participative response. *The aim of the integration of the art object with spectator participation is to elicit a response from them and to ensure that the engagement continues beyond the art space.* The scene for this happening involves four elements: · 'Kodel' made by Manjunaath Naik and played to a subversion of ‘4-33’ a music piece by avant garde composer John Cage, · 'Wag the Dog' created by Osborne Carvalho with the bones of Vice Virtue, · A video installation juxtaposed between street art created by them and · An art performance involving a beat up old Kinetic, all in a little bylane of Fontainhas leading to Gallery Gitanjali, Panjim Pousada . The Happening is planned for the 16th of December, 2011 between 4:00 and 6:30pm. [Goanet] Goa's New Social Workers
Goans are increasingly seeing New Social Workers coming on the screen, who are praised to the Heavens as Great People, Icons etc. Of course, the promoters forgot to mention that these so called Great Social workers are related to the most corrupt Anti Goan Politicians in Goa today, who are looting Goa in all possible manners and with it the destruction of Goa. Then of course, these Icons are also promoted by specific religious religious leaders/priests, who in my opinion are embarassment to their specific religious order and religion. It is really hard to understand how with so many so called Great Social Workers, Goa and its identity today is being devastated in all ways. Anyway if they are really Great Social Workers, I think we should get them nominated for awards to the highest Indian or International levels, so that they further embarass Goa and Goans further!! -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. [Goanet] CHRISTMAS - NO ALCOHOL DAY in INDIA
During Christmas day there are many Catholics in India especially in places like Bombay Goa who drink bottle after bottle of country liquor or feni or whiskey or rum or brandy or wine or beer……all these drinks have alcohol in it……… Those who consume these alcoholic drinks end up damaging their health, cloud their mind, make them a danger to others, and lead them closer to hell and farther from God………. And even though society tells you that drinking is fun, that people who drink are social and attractive, and that a little wine is good for your health, the Bible tells us something very different: Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.Who do you think has your best interest at heart, the big corporations who make millions off of you by getting you to drink as much as possible? Or God in heaven who created you and who warned you against alcohol and told you to live soberly and righteously?...Do you think anyone would have listened to John the Baptist or Daniel or the disciples if they would have been hanging out at the bar during happy hour and getting drunk?..These men were used by God in a mighty way. God was able to use them because they did not defile their bodies or minds with alcohol..Let all those christians in india who drink alcohol take a pledge that from 25th December, 2011 onwards they will try to stop drinking alcohol and whatever money that is saved by not drinking alcohol they will donate that money to activists and ngos..involved in battle against corruption.involved in protecting lands of farmers - tribals - fisherfolks..involved in serving poor people. Please don’t expect the Parish Priest to discourage the laity from drinking alcohol……the Priests are too busy misusing church funds, selling away vacant church properties, playing politics during school admissions by refusing admission to children of poor catholics in parish schools………With due respect to the priests, they are shepherds of the flock. They should contain themselves to just that. The priests come for a few years, finish their term of 2 – 6 years and leave to serve another parish. Therefore, it is best that all the matters related to the church funds – church properties – parish school administration is left to the laity and the priests restrict their duty only to religious matters. JESUS is GOD – GOD is JESUS……..God came in a human form on earth not just to preach humanity, equality, justice, peace but also to revolt against corrupt political religious leaders………today it is not just politicians sarkari babus who are neck deep in corruption even the religious leaders have resorted to corrupt activities…..…and it is time the lay catholics awake from deep slumber and revolt against all those who are involved in corrupt activities. EastIndians ( http://www.bombayland.blogspot.com ) lost all their agricultural lands in bombay to the britishraj, indian government, maharashtra government, slumlords, landmafia, politicalgroups, slumlords, mmrda, mhada, collectorsoffice, bmc, etc………..a few eastindians managed to save some of their agricultural lands and sold those lands in the 1980s and 90s and became wealthy..……..but a vast majority of eastindians ( http://www.east-indians.com ) who were busy with alcoholism, infighting, jealousy were not in a position to save any of their agricultural lands and became poor and have been reduced to a status of backward class…all eastindian associations federations panchayats will have to come together and organize rallies at shivaji park, azad maidan, etc as well as meet MPs, MLAs, Corporators, etc to demand 5% job quota for eastindians in bmc, police, mmrdaoffices, mhadaoffices, rationoffices, collectorsoffice, citysurveyoffices, town planning dept, urban development dept, building proposal dept, suburbanrailways, metro, monorail, airindia, ongc, hp, indianoil, rbi, nationalized banks, bombay/kalina university, iitpowai, central/state govt. undertakings, public sector undertakings and other government institutions operating in bombay... the Indian govt. is modifying the land acquisition act where it will be mandatory for the industries to reserve jobs, pay market compensation, provide shares, etc for the people whose lands will be taken for industrial development, SEZs, etc the govt. also needs to extend the provisions of the act to those who have lost their agricultural ancestral lands in the past. If you ask the Chief Minister of Maharashtra who eastindians in bombay are he will scratch his head…..if you ask the BMC commissioner the same question he will also scratch his head……..except for goans mangaloreans there is hardly anyone in Bombay , Maharashtra or India who know about the eastindians because of the inappropriate name.when India got independence in 1947 there was a debate among some eastindians that the name eastindians should be abandoned and the
Re: [Goanet] Major Power Problems in Lourdes Convent High School, Saligao
I too have empathy for the plight of this great school. I agree with Tony De Sa, that the school authorities and parents need to put pressure on the power minister. I dont believe that this can be resolved at the local Electric sub-station level or even with monetary support from the people of Saligao and neighboring villages. Unless the school thinks it can purchase and run a captive power station to serve the exclusive needs of the school. Such a scenario would be out of reach financially and entail its own set of problems to acquire and operate. No this situation requires higher level official intervention. Frequent power outages, and low voltage have become a fact of life in Goa. Not only are the frequent outages a great inconvenience, but I too have lost several appliances including my large Clothes Washing Machine which has comoputer controls that got burnt and is beyond repair. The entire Washing Machine now requires replacement at a substantial sum of money. At times our Micro Wave runs but does not heat. When I checked the incoming voltage level it was 160 Volts instead of the normal 220V to 230 V . So the low incoming voltage is beyond the parameters within which appliances work. Our lights also flicker and dim at times. I used to have Stabilizers only for my Refrigerators, Airconditioners and TVs. Now I am installing them on the rest of my appliances. In my jaded pessimism, I wonder whether the authorities that be are justifying the low voltage on the lack of Power generation in the country as a whole, and justifying the need for more Nuclear plants. Unfortunately with hotels, and concrete jungles and industries sprouting all over Goa the problem can only get worse. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

Frederick FN Noronha: Looks like just a case of ageism to me (on Aires' part, while the good doctor seems guilty of provocatively overdiagnosing here). RESPONSE: No overdiagnosis here. Not very sure if the good journo took his time to remember that every citizen has rights, and that neither the citizen nor his/her rights can be summarily pastured. It is one thing to suggest term limits and canvass for younger blood, it is quite another to advocate the unconstitutional elimination of rights. Who next should be put to pasture? Women, Christians, Lawyers, Homosexuals, Journos etc? And moving ahead, should they be removed from society and 'pastured' on some remote places? ps: As far as I am concerned, it is not a case of ageism on Aires' part. [Goanet] Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Tuem Goa (10.12.11)
Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Tuem Goa (10.12.11) Today, we went to Tuem for the first time (?) Believe me or not, I thought Tivim and Tuem is one and the same. Tuem being Konkani for Tivim, it was only few months ago, I found out Tivim and Tuem are two different villages former being in Bardez and the later (Tuem) in Pernem Taluka. Tuem is about 16 kms from Mapusa via Dhargal. All buses going to Dhargal (Sports City), Mandrem go via Tuem. Bus takes about 30 minutes and the fare is Rs.12 The little church is located uphill on a hillock very next to it is Don Bosco Boys School and boarding. It takes about 10 minutes (Walking) to reach there from the main road. On the way, you first come across a small cemetery (See pic). New cemetery getting ready next tot he church (se slides)Tuem has about 500 Catholics Guess what? The moment I saw the school, I realised that I had been here some 5-6 years ago with someone but I did not know it was Tuem. Infact, we even went inside the school/boarding and even had tea with the priest. There (in the dining hall) I spotted a ‘Gurgureth’ and I immediately took photo of it. This one http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/121767388/ I even saw the church from outside but honestly did not know it was Tuem Church. For us, I guess, Tuem is more popular because of the famous tiatrist /Cantorist Francis de Tuem hailing from the village (he now stays at Mapusa, I am told) I was hoping to see him at least in the feast procession Sadly, I have not spotted him there but saw his nephew Conception de Tuem on his bike though. It was 10 priests concelebrated feast mass with priests from Pernem, Kerim etc Main celebrant was Fr. Diogo. the blog http://joegoauk.blogspot.com/2011/12/feast-of-st-francis-xavier-tuem-goa.html The Church was beautifully decorated Sadly, there was no customary ‘Pursanv’ nor ‘Festa Muzg’ at the end of the feast mass. However, there was a ‘Festa Tiatr’ tonight titled ‘Pirai’ by Maxcy Pereira. some pics The Church http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486014933/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486023677/in/photostream/ St. Francis Xavier http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486016553/in/photostream/ Main Altar http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486017841/in/photostream/ with priests http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486019943/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486027087/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486027573/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk46/6486028021/in/photostream/ Fr. Mr Naik who was inaugurating a seminar “Goa struggle for freedom”, organized by Shree mallikarjun college of arts and commerce at Canacona on Saturday, further said that it is often seen that some members of public, including freedom fighters while putting up their grievance with respect to a public issue, go to the extreme of saying that we have to start another freedom struggle in the country as India is still not a free country in real sense. Mr Naik said that just because a particular problem has not been resolved or that a number of problems are pending for solutions by the government, it is unfair it is most inappropriate that aggrieved persons should insult the nation. Mr Naik further said that young generation should undertake intellectual exercise to study local issues affecting the public at large and suggest concrete proposals to the government He condemned the attitude of those who proudly pose themselves as Blackmailers, as if , it is an virtue , and said that , blackmailing is not a fundamental right and ,on the contrary its is a penal offence . [Goanet] Festadis - Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays
Dear Goykars I would like to share with our worldwide community through goanet (that has no borders or visa controls) the following greeting sent to me. The festive season is a time when we should remember all our family and friends (even those who we fight with, don't normally talk to or spend time with during the year). As the make-up of our worldwide family is red, green, black, blue passports, etc. here it goes: Quote I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to my friends and colleagues, but it is difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my lawyer yesterday, and on advice I wish to say the following: Please accept with no obligation, implied or otherwise, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress , non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the summer solstice holiday practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all . I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee . By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms : This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher . Best Regards (without prejudice) Name withheld (Privacy Act). [Goanet] BAD LOGIC OF JUSTICE SHAH [ NT Edit 10 Dec 2011] Commentary
December 10, 2011 To, The Editor, Navhind TImes. Panjim-Goa. Sir, Sub: Your edit 'Bad Logic of Justice Shah http://www.navhindtimes.in/opinion/bad-logic-justice-shah This Goa's political Party wishes to bring to your kind attention the following vis a vis your above edit:- 1. That those who get to eat free of cost cannot criticize. 2. Your calling Justice Shah's logic as bad is well understood because his verdict goes against the mining lobby, you being [or was] part of it. 3. You cannot sit on high pedestal of being the newspaper financed by the mining enterprise and pass judgments. Leave the people of Goa to do that. 4. The mining barons have created this situation of putting the livelihood of thousands of Goans at stake by bundling them into trades that has serviced your profit making enterprises for far too long. Now is the time that you should pay heavy compensations to these families whose lively-hood you are so worried about. 5. This Party has the formula: a) You ( the mining lobby/mine owners combined) pay 3/4th of the monthly compensation to the families of Goan people who have been or may be rendered jobless, until such time that these people are given back their livelihood. The compensation should be Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 25,000/- per month per family, depending on large/small families. The rest to be paid by the Government of Goa. b) Auction/Sell the Trucks and/or Mining Machinery that these Goan families own ( not Ministers and MLAs) and off-set their loans and mortgages so that they are freed, not to commit suicide like Maharashtra farmers. c) Ban mining in Goa completely and freeze all ore exports until such time a complete and forward looking mining policy is establish for Goa's mining sector. It is amply evident that Justice Shah has acted or is acting on the below given advice by this Party and Allied Organizations which does not mince words and are far from protecting the mining lobby and mine owners of Goa. Sd/- Floriano Lobo, General Secretary, Goa Su-Raj Party 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org Copy to: Justice Shah. Date: 17 September, 2011 To, The Honourable Justice Shah Commission, Secretariat, Porvorim- Goa. Sir, The people of GOA believe that the mineral resources of GOA is the 'gift ' of GOD to GOA and Goans. They also believe that : If the exploitation of these mineral resources do not benefit GOA and Goans in any way, but on the contrary, if the massive and indiscriminate illegal and legal exploitation of these vital resources of Goa brings unending pain and suffering to them through massive and unimaginable 'dust pollution' which has resulted in bringing the curse of 'TB' on the people, unbearable noise pollution emanating from the 24-hour working of noisy mining machinery and the un-ending line of overloaded ore transporting road vehicles, where they cannot live a decent peaceful life in the most peaceful God-given surroundings, drying out of their natural water resources, their well, to make them dependent on the unfiltered and polluted water from the mining pits supplied to them by the mine-owners as a favour, if their forests are massively depleted endangering its wild life, forcing these creatures to invade their villages and settlements to destroy their crops and whatever livelihood they have, if their agricultural fields are silted beyond cultivation from the mining rejects flowing down into their fields during the heavy monsoons, if their roads and houses are covered with dust making walking and living miserable, THEN THE PEOPLE OF GOA DEMAND THAT THESE GOD-GIVEN MINERAL RESOURCES OF GOA REMAIN BURIED AND UNTOUCHED WHETHER THE GOA GOVERNMENT OR THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT LIKES IT OR NOT. Justice, Sir, Heed must be taken that if GREED prevails over basic common sense, the 'powers that be' shall be ever so responsible in bringing this, OUR, ordinarily peaceful GOA to a boiling point of no return. [Goanet] Mama's Love in Foreign Lands -Dehydrated Food
Here's an article in the Outlook which at first glance is quite amusing but on further thought presents a great business idea for someone in Goa. Innovator Lalit D. Meisheri Innovation: dehydrated food Pulao Par Avion! Mom's kitchen to NRI plates: the in-between is cut-'n-dry Smita Mitra Prithi Chauthani is glad her son, a student in the US, still gets to eat the food cooked by her every day. Magic? No, tech actually. Prithi takes her son's favourites, this month it's biriyani, to Lalit Meisheri, who processes them into ready-to-eat, single-serve packs. All her son has to do is place the packs in boiling water and, voila, out pops piping-hot mom's biriyani! The food was about 7 kg when Prithi took it to Meisheri. After being processed, it weighs less than 2 kg and is easy to transport by air. And all it costed her was Rs 2,000. His birthday is coming up and he is sure to have friends over, she says, beaming. I hope they like my biriyani. More than 3,000 mothers like Prithi, from across Mumbai, come to Meisheri to send food to loved ones abroad. What sets Meisheri's service apart from other heat and serve products is that the food retains its nutritional value, flavour and taste and there are no preservatives added. The service is so customised that Meisheri often has mothers show him exactly how much their sons and daughters eat at each meal so that he can tailor the food packets accordingly and avoid wastage. The idea was seeded when a friend complained to Meisheri about how her daughter had lost six kilos after going to study in the US. I thought that it was important for our children to be well-fed when they are studying, he explains. And so the first meal pack was born. He has since dehydrated all kinds of dishes: from khichdi, biriyani (and its raita accompaniment), gajar ka halwa to idli and rajma. His busiest month is August, just before the students depart for their fall academic semester. Meisheri, an IIT-Bombay alumnus, started with seasonal fruits and vegetables because he wanted to reduce food spoilage during transit from villages and also cut transport costs by reducing the bulk of the produce being transported. He claims his process of dehydrating food at room temperature retains its micronutrients-unlike the other heat-based dehydration methods. Meisheri is unwilling to go into detail about his methods, but a panel of doctors from Southampton Hospital in the UK has authenticated his claims about the food retaining its nutritional value. The Indus Entrepreneurs (tie), a global non-profit organisation that recognises innovative entrepreneurs within the South Asian community, has adjudged his method to be a bonafide new dehydrating technology. But the real test for Meisheri comes from those who know their food. The Birlas, for instance. Meisheri recounts the dinner test that Rajashri Birla, the wife of the late Aditya Birla, put him through recently. They sent me dishes from Swati Snacks (a Mumbai eatery) to dehydrate and used the food packs I made from them to serve a meal at their home, he says. The Birlas had their guests rate the food: most of the dishes received ten out of ten with a few scoring 9.8! To Meisheri's surprise, he soon received an order to dehydrate 150 kilos of foodstuff. The Birla family was going to Spain for a holiday and they wanted authentic home food during their vacation. He then started getting big orders from the rich and famous, and even has those with religious strictures, such as Jain businessmen, queueing up for meal packs for holidays and business trips. Other savvy former clients are entering the heat and serve industry using his method. Pankti Chheda used to sup on Meisheri's food packets while completing her Masters in Global Business Analysis in the UK. Once she returned to Mumbai, she started Heat 2 Eat, aimed at Indian students across campuses, promising to not only deliver home-cooked food, but also dishes from iconic Mumbai restaurants. In three months, she already has about 80 regulars. Similarly, local Mumbai joints like Samrat and the Kamat group of restaurants are hoping their legendary dishes, like the pav bhaji and south Indian fare, can be marketed abroad using this technique. Meisheri is excited about how his method is finding new takers, but is happy to stick to the research side of things. I'd rather other people handle the business part. Not that the end-users of his goods mind-they clamour for more home-cooked, authentic Kolhapuri mutton curry in Connecticut. Article Ends. Imagine Cecil Pinto Goanet entrepreneur taking the tastiest food in Goa restaurants and shacks and doing what Lalit Meisheri does. Imagine Frederick Noronha Goanet marketer splashing the menu on Flipkart and other media and then using his postal expertise and connections to deliver the packets in a cost efficient manner to single Goan workers in the Gulf, to Goans in US, Canadian and Australian small towns that do not have access to Goan cooking and food, and
[Goanet] Alfred Tavares -The Universal Goan
With Alfred's posts I am constantly amazed at the old-timers in Goa and through them their second and third generations that he knows or has been friends with or at the very least had some form of contact or other in his lifetime. Simply put, Alfred knows almost everyone in Goa once worth knowing. Goanetters may not be aware, but Alfred in the Goa of his time, was a well-known vagabond, rebel, in-your-face kind of mischief maker and the scourge of all the Salcette Bamon stiff upper-lipped families that once held sway over land and property that was valuable not for the prices that they fetch in today's world but because of the enormous acreage they had come into via inheritance and swindling both their Bamon and non-Bamon brothers and sisters. Property was not all they stole. Rumors abound of some of the male members of those families picking a lot of cherries through wile and promise. Note I said that Alfred was a scourge of such people and not a participant with them. OK Alfred, my lips are sealed. Many happy years of Swedish hedonism to our Alfred the journalist as he is known in his native Loutulim. May his spirits never lag. Roland. [Goanet] ONE MORE GANDHI?
One more Gandhi? First, they said there will never be another ‘Gandhi’. I mean the likes of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. But now they admit another ‘Gandhi’ has just burst onto India’s political scene. His name is Kisan Baburao Hazare, or just Anna Hazare, the first two names being kept aside for the sake of convenience, just as in the case of the original Gandhi. Wonder if M. K. Gandhi ever hero-worshiped a Hazare of his times. I refer to Vijay Hazare, the renowned Indian cricketer, admired for his batting skills, especially in Test cricket. Quite unlikely, but if that be so, Gandhi might have had a wish to be re-born as Hazare, which wish was, in fact made manifest prematurely by this Hazare, just a year before the Mahatma was killed by a fellow Hindu in 1948. And the pundits now have good reasons to concede they were wrong: First, both Gandhi and Hazare made their entries onto political centre-stages via short prison terms in Johannesburg and Delhi, respectively. Second, Anna outpaced policemen on his march out of ‘Tihar’ jail on to a waiting bus, while the Mahatma did that to his followers on his march to ‘Dandi’. Third, Anna, like the Mahatma, unleashed the force of a fast to unsettle a government, only in this case his own. Fourth, Anna, like the Mahatma, knows well that a civilised government will not allow him to fast until he dies. That would mean allowing him to commit suicide, and suicide, besides being cowardly is criminal, both on the part of the one who commits it, and those that allow it. However, the one contrasting feature between the two is that the Mahatma fought his battles bare-chested, while Anna dares not bare his chest, lest corruption get into it. Perhaps this is also the reason why he covers his head with a ‘Gandhi’ cap, while Gandhi himself never did. [Goanet] The making of an artist - Mario Miranda - goanvoice.org.uk
Showcase: The making of an artistSWATI DAFTUAR The HinduThe Life of Mario: 1951. Photo: Special Arrangement A peek at how Mario Miranda’s trademark style evolved. He is one of India’s best known cartoonists and social chroniclers. And now comes a book that shows us how he got there. The Life of Mario: 1951, published by Architecture Autonomous, is a graphic diary of images and cartoons from Mario Miranda’s life. More than 50 years old, it is a collection of his rib-tickling, tongue-in-cheek art work edited by Gerard Da Cunha. The year 1951 marked a turning point in Mario’s artistic development and in Goa’s own history. In 1951, Mario De Miranda had just finished university in Mumbai and was on a sabbatical. Born in 1926 in the Portuguese enclave of Daman, Mario belonged to a Goan Roman Catholic family of Saraswat Brahmin origin. His father was the Administrator of Daman and his family a part of the local aristocracy. Consequently, Mario managed to imbibe the best of both Portuguese as well as Goan cultures. This multi-cultural understanding and empathy is clearly manifested in his work.It is impossible to have read newspapers and magazines in India and not come across examples of Mario’s works. His influences are everywhere, in books, poetry and social commentary. But this book provides us with a peek into his personal life. Included in this volume are scenes from his daily life, which he was in the habit of drawing. There are gossiping aunties, solemn priests, dances and birthday parties, favourite bars that allowed credit; everything from those years of Mario’s life that would later chart out the path towards his career. These images also show the cartoonist’s trademark style taking shape; the exaggerated line of the bosom and the rosy noses, the strut and bug eyes that would later become his signature style. Flipping through the pages of Mario’s life, you see the artist evolve and find himself within his own work. All of 25 and free spirited, Mario’s sabbatical in Goa was filled with old friends and cousins out to have fun. They organised clandestine parties and picnics, visited their favourite haunts and hardly had a dull moment. Mario recreates this world, introducing us to hoards of charming and lovable characters.A keen observer of village politics and human nature, he transforms this book, with his notes, dialogues and vignettes that pepper the images, from a simple chronicle of his life to a richly humorous social satire. Many have wondered how Mario, with no formal training in art, could draw so spontaneously. Manohar Malgaonkar, whose book Goa was illustrated by Mario, seemed to have hit upon the answer when he said that Mario ‘did not become a cartoonist. He was born a cartoonist.’The Life of Mario: 1951; edited by Gerard da Cunha, Architecture Autonomous, Rs. 395. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
