[Goanet] CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ROMI KONKNNI HELD AT INCREDIBLE ENGLISH
*CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ROMI KONKNNI HELD AT INCREDIBLE ENGLISH * Incredible English, conducted successfully Romi Konkani Course from 15 June to 31 August, at its boutique residential English School & Resort at Benaulim. A total of four students – David Trotter (United Kingdom), Nicole Luick Da Silva (Switzerland), Bharati Marwaha Kumar (India) and Emma Bryant (Canada) participated in the Romi Konkani Course. Incredible English is a boutique residential English School & Resort in the amazing and uniquely beautiful village of Benaulim, Goa, where symbols of a rich history are fused with the present, creating a uniquely Goan atmosphere, whilst the local Indian culture ensures an experience never to be forgotten. “I found the course on the whole to be excellent. It was very good that we were taught the Konkani grammar rather than just learning stock phrases. This will allow us to progress with the language in future,” opined David Trotter. “The deep knowledge of the teacher, not only of the Konkani language, but also of the culture of the people made the classes very interesting. It is very important when learning a new language that one should also learn about the people, and this gives an insight into how the language is used,” he added further. Mr.Trotter added that he has grasped the basis of the language and “I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this course to anyone wishing to learn Konkani.” “My teacher was great. A deep understanding of the language allows him to explain questions in full. He is animated and engaging,” said Emma Bryant, married to a Goan and settled in Goa for the last 4 years. “I would be embarrassed to live in Goa and not able to speak Konkani,” commented Emma Bryant. “The course benefited me a lot as all the grammar questions have been addressed which nobody could give me a satisfactory answer for my questions raised before,” said Nicole Luick Da Silva who is married to a Goan and is settled in Goa since 2006. Nicole added that the course made her understand how the language is working and used, besides making her like the language more than before. According to Bharati Marwaha Kumar “the grammar gives a better understanding of the language. The course was amazing and the teacher was our inspiration.” The focus in this course was to read Romi Konkani with comprehension, basic vocabulary, basic grammar of Romi Konkani and speaking and reading. Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes, a post graduate in Konkani, All India Konkani Writers Vice-President (Goa Unit), writer and teacher conducted the Romi Konkani Course. *PHOTO CAPTION* (From L-R:) General Manager Anand Gracias, Emma Bryant, Jose Salvador Fernandes, Nicole Luick Da Silva, Bharati Marwaha Kumar and David Trotter.

[Goanet] BROADWAY’S CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ROMI KONKNNI HELD
Broadway Book Centre, a leading and pioneering book store in Goa conducted successfully Romi Konknni Course from 07 October to 06 November of 78 hours, at Broadway Book Centre, Panjim. Seven students participated in the course. The focus in this course was to read Romi Konknni with comprehension, basic vocabulary, basic grammar of Romi Konknni and speaking. To achieve this goal, the students were engaged in various language learning exercises, such as repetition drill, structural table drill, match the following, fill in the blanks, pattern practice, grouping the vocabulary according to gender and number, etc. “A good teacher always takes the level of the students into consideration and I could see that type of teacher in Fr. Pratap Naik,” said Comdt. (retd) Baljit Singh, 58 who attended the Romi Konknni course and whose mother tongue is Punjabi. “The course has benefitted me a lot, as I wanted to learn correct Konknni. Now I can speak, understand and even read Konknni. I have learnt good number of new words in Konknni during the course,” said 83 years old Mr. J. B. Adeodata de Souza from Siloim, who was born in Africa and spent 46 years of his life there. “Personally I feel that the course was very good and both the teachers were good in teaching. I never came across a class of only 7 students having 2 teachers, where one is teaching and other one is carefully listening to the students and I am really fortunate to be part of this class,” said Mrs. Corinne Carvalho, 62 one of the participants of the course from Miramar. Mr. Agnelo Braganza, 73 who travelled everyday all the way from Majorda to Panjim to attend the course is very much impressed by the unique teaching method during the course. “Teaching method is especially good for adults. The structural drills and other exercises really give foundation to the students for language learning,” said Mr. Braganza who spent his childhood in Mumbai and later on worked on the ship thus losing touch with his mother tongue. Dr. (Fr.) Pratap Naik, SJ, a well-known Konknni linguist, teacher and researcher and who is the authority in Konknni language was the main resource person, and he was assisted by Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes, a post graduate in Konknni, writer and teacher. At the end of the course, the students were presented certificates by Mr Rama Harmalkar, representative of Broadway Book Centre. Due to unavoidable circumstances only 4 students were present during certificate presentation ceremony. *‘AMCHI BHAS:1’ ROMI KONKNNI PRIMER* Broadway Publishing House to promote and strengthen Romi Konknni in Goa will soon launch a Romi Konknni Primer ‘Amchi Bhas:1’ for the first standard students. The primer is in press. The multi-coloured 60 pages primer is of size 27.3 x 20.3 cm. is written in a simple and lucid standard Romi Konknni used in Goa. It is based on universal pedagogical, linguistic and logical principles of language learning and teaching. There are 21 lessons which cover various themes such as pictorial story reading, student’s self-introduction, names of parts of the body, household articles, common animals, birds, flowers, fruits, fishes, vegetables, names of the common colours, counting numbers, ordinal numbers, names of the days and months, prayer song, mother tongue Konknni, birthday celebration, description of a village, village festival, folk-story, etc. At the end of each lesson various language learning exercises, such as repetition drill, structural table drill, match the following, fill in the blanks, pattern practice, grouping the vocabulary according to gender and number are included. A good number of lessons are written in the form of songs and lively music is composed for them. All the songs which are in the lessons and many other children’s songs which could be used as a teaching material are found in ‘Hansun, Khellun Gavum-ia’ MP3. In the introductory section, teachers have been given extensive and practical suggestions how to teach Romi Konknni using this primer. For example, singing, acting, role playing, drawing, colouring and story narration. The lessons are illustrated with plenty of attractive multi-coloured pictures. The lessons are written taking into consideration Romi Konknni students’ surroundings, environment, flora and fauna, culture and traditions. At the same time utmost care is taken to promote multi-religious, cultural and social harmony of Goa through lessons and songs. ‘Amchi Bhas:1’ is authored by Dr (Fr.) Pratap Naik, S.J., a well-known Konknni linguist, teacher and researcher and who is the authority in Konknni language. He has been assisted by Mr Jose Salvador Fernandes, a post graduate in Konknni, Konknni teacher and writer. [Goanet] DKA's MEET TO DEMAND OFFICIAL STATUS TO KONKNNI IN ROMI SCRIPT
DKA's MEET TO DEMAND OFFICIAL STATUS TO KONKNNI IN ROMI SCRIPT Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) has convened a meeting on 12th October, 2013 (Saturday) to deliberate on the issue of demanding the legitimate and rightful place to Konknni in Romi script in the Official Language Act. The meeting will be held at Tiatr Academy Goa’s Conference Hall, Campal, Panjim at 4.00 pm. All the Konknni writers, editors, activists and Konknni organizations working for the promotion and development of Konknni in Romi script are kindly requested to attend the meeting. [Goanet] PRESS CONFERENCE JOINTLY ORGANIZED BY DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI, JAGOTIK KONKNNI SONGHOTTON, ROMI LIPI ACTION FRONT AND TIATR ACADEMY GOA
*PRESS CONFERENCE JOINTLY ORGANIZED BY* *DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI, JAGOTIK KONKNNI SONGHOTTON, * *ROMI LIPI ACTION FRONT AND TIATR ACADEMY GOA* * * * * * * 1. This has reference to the Press Conference given by Goa Konkani Academy (GKA) yesterday (23.09.2013) and to the numerous faulty statements made by Shri Pundalik Naik, President of GKA. 2. It is unfortunate to observe that a literary institution like GKA is opposed to giving awards to Konknni in Romi script. This only proves the selfish attitude of promoting Devnagari script by destroying the Romi script in Goa. They tried to do so in the past and failed miserably. 3. These four organizations namely, Dalgado Konknni Akademi, Jagotik Konknni Songhotton *(Global Konknni Organisation)*, Romi Lipi Action Front and Tiatr Academy Goa strongly support the decision taken by the Chairman of Kala Academy and Hon’ble MLA of St. Andre Constituency, Shri Vishnu Surya Wagh for giving separate literary award not only to Konknni in Romi script but also for books in English and in other regional languages written by Goans. In fact this decision must be hailed by all the persons of literature because Shri Vishnu Surya Wagh has recognized the literary creativity not only in Konknni and Marathi but also in other languages used by Goans. 4. GKA has not projected factual position of literary awards as far as Goa Kala Academy is concerned. Goa Kala Academy has been awarding literary awards to Konknni in Devnagari script as well as to Konknni in Romi script since the inception of literary awards by Kala Academy. There are so many writers of Konknni in Romi script who have received such awards in the past. 5. It was in 1987 that the Official Language Act (OLA) of Goa was passed and fraudulently it was mentioned in the Act that Konknni in Devnagari script will be the Official Language. In fact this was the great betrayal to the protagonists of Konknni in Romi script because of whose support the Konknni language became the Official Language of Goa. 6. It is after the Act was implemented that some leaders of Devnagari lobby such as Adv. Uday Bhembre, Pundalik Naik, Naguesh Karmali, Arvind Bhatikar, Fr. Mousinho Ataide and others worked directly or indirectly to stop the promotion and development of Konknni in Romi script. Their selfish actions are : a) They stopped Kala Academy from giving awards to Konknni in Romi script as they controlled the committees of Kala Academy. The reason given was that the OLA recognizes Konknni in Devnagri script only. b) GKA did not help in any way for the promotion and development of Konknni in Romi script. It was only in 2005 that the Goa Govt., with a resolution passed in the Goa Assembly, directed the GKA to provide funds for the promotion and development of Konknni in Romi script. c) This lobby has succeeded in manipulating the Konknni movement at all levels. At the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi their manipulative tactics have helped them to keep away the protagonists of Konknni in Romi script, since the recognition of Konknni by Sahitya Akademi in 1976. This is proved from the facts that the advisory bodies appointed by the Sahitya Akademi have 10 out of 10 members who are the supporters of Devnagari script. Their strategy is such that they appoint some Christians to the advisory bodies to show that they include everyone. However, the Christians who are appointed are basically the supporters of Devnagari script. With all these actions, it only proves that Devnagari lobby is all out to destroy Konknni in Romi script. 7. Because Kala Academy stopped giving Literary Award to Konknni in Romi script and GKA refusing to support Konknni in Romi script, the protagonists of Konknni in Romi script agitated. They appealed to the political leadership of Goa as well as to the lovers of Konknni language to give justice to Konknni in Romi script. As a result of this, the then Govt. of Goa, including the Opposition, was compelled to pass resolution in Goa Assembly to direct GKA to promote and develop Konknni in Romi script also. 8. It is due to the direction of Govt. that GKA were compelled to support Konknni in Romi script since 2005. It is completely wrong to make it appear that they supported Konknni in Romi script out of their free will. 9. It is also wrongly informed by GKA that they supported Government’s decision to get Govt. grants to Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) for the promotion and development of Konknni in Romi script. In fact, they opposed even at the last moment and tried to stop the then Chief Minister to give grants to DKA but in vain. 10. Protagonists of Konknni in Romi script continued their fight with Kala Academy to restore the Literary Award to Konknni in Romi script. The protagonists of Konknni in Romi script also demanded that Award for Konknni in Romi script should be given in a separate category. This is needed

[Goanet] Fwd: One-day Convention of Konkani writers – convened by JKS.
-- Forwarded message -- From: Jagotik Konknni Songhotton jksgl...@gmail.com Date: Wed, Sep 4, 2013 at 11:57 PM Subject: One-day Convention of Konkani writers – convened by JKS. To: Jose Salvador Fernandes, Goa konk...@gmail.com Mogall Bab Jose, It is a well-known fact that a small lobby of literatteurs who are staunch ‘Devanagarivadis’, have dictated the course of the Konkani movement in India and have done great damage to literature in scripts other than in Devanagari, resulting in the continued disunity among Konkanis. This lobby, through sheer manipulation and trickery, has retained its stranglehold over the Konkani power-centres at the state and at the national level and has usurped and appropriated all facilities, benefits, awards, grants, projects, etc. for itself, and continues to do so despite protests and objections. As you are well aware, 2 Writ Petitions, have been filed – one in the High Court of Karnataka against the Sahitya Akademi, seeking equal treatment to all scripts, and one in the Mumbai High Court (Goa Bench), to rectify the Official Language Act to include Roman script. Despite this, the Devanagari lobby is on the offensive and is now engaged in installing (‘protixttapon’) the Devanagari lipi in Karnataka. It is very unfortunate that the only Konkani Writer’s Forum in Karnataka, instead of protecting the interest of Konkani literature and litterateurs writing in the Kannada script, is on the one hand busy defaming, damning and denigrating fellow writers, while on the other, is going overboard to act as tools in the hands of the Devanagari lobby, in return for the scraps that they throw at them. What is most shameful is that this Forum has never raised its voice against the injustices done to the Kannada script by the ‘Devanagarivadis’, but instead are content to be seen in the ranks of the oppressors and uphold their ideology. Under these painful circumstances, Jagotik Konknni Songhotton considers it its sacred duty to bring-together writers of Kannada and Roman scripts and also probe the possibilities of establishing an *All-India Konkani Writers’ Forum*, which will protect the interest of Konkani literature and Konkani writers of all scripts. *The one-day Convention is scheduled for Sun., Sep. 29, 2013 (9.30 a.m to 4 p.m.), at Kalaangann, Mangalore.* You are requested to be present and also to ensure the participation of maximum number of writers in the Roman script, in this Convention. ** The agenda of the Convention would be – 1. To learn about the progress in the 2 Writ Petitions. 2. To find a remedy to the problem of only the Devanagari point of view dominating the internet – through Wikipedia. 3. To probe the possibilities of establishing an all-India body of Konkani writers. *Come, it’s time to unite and fight against the injustices we have suffered for so long and tell the world – ‘enough is enough!’* Kindly confirm your participation. With warm regards, *Eric Ozario* Secretary General -- JKS - Global Konkani Organization Kalaangann, Makale, Shaktinagar, Mangalore - 575 016 Ph - 824 - 2232377

He is infamously known for his kiss of betrayal for thirty pieces of silver. All the four Gospels identify him as the betrayer. Is the epithe Iscariott applied posthumously to distinguish him from another Judas ? He was the only apostle from outside Galilee . It is not known whether this fact made him uncomfortable. Did Iscariot connote a liar or false one? The chief priest was looking for a sly way to arrest Jesus and not during the feast afraid of his popularity and people rioting .Hence they chose the night before the feast Judas was the treasurer, Money bag or the purse keeper of the apostles and was suspected to be petty thief using money as he wished .He protested at Jesus feet being anointed with costly perfume, which could be used for the poor .Hence money was his weakness and undoing falling from grace with Jesus. He was expecting that Jesus as the leader of Jewish would revolt against the Romans and he had great hopes and love for his country to be freed. He was disappointed, disillusioned disciple on Jesus announcement of impending death Jesus is very strongly condemning his treachery, by saying that it would have be better for him not to be born in the first place and yet Jesus addresses him as the friend and he chose him as the one of the twelve apostles. The sin of treachery aaginst trust is very significant according to Jesus. Jesus said that the one who will betray him will eat the dipped bread and which was given to him He left at the last supper without partaking of the wine with Jesus asking him to do quickly what he wishes and the others did not understand what it was meant. Earlier while washing the feet Jesus remarked, hinting that all of them were not clean. But nothing touched the heart of Judas to reform and change his intentions and greed for material wealth. If Judas had not to betray him then Gods plan of crucifixion, resurrection and the prophecy would not be fulfilled? Was not Jesus ultimately destined to be crucified? Did Judas have not cared to exercise his own free will and was it necessary and unavoidable? He was free to accept or reject Jesus, It is noted that he never addressed Jesus as the Lord, but as the master .Judas acted with Jesus full knowledge and consent of betrayal. And yet Jesus picked him up as his chosen apostle. Judas was already damned before he committed suicide. He sold him with a kiss and 30 pieces of silver. Perhaps he never expected the way they treated Jesus and condemned to die. He repented and returned the money. But he never repented to Jesus in person against whom he had sinned by treacherous betrayal of innocent blood .The act of betrayal does not appear in the earliest Christian writings. Did Judas commit suicide before the crucifixion by hanging at dawn or his body burst disemboweling his internal organs? There are conflicting reports of death of Judas It appears that he had dream of disciples stoning him and persecuting him for his act of treachery .Was he present after the Jesus appeared to the apostles where only Thomas was said to be missing? He is speculated to have died much later after resurrection Jesus I his goodness and dying moments had been merciful eve to the thief on the right side of the cross and asked forgiveness for those who did not know what they were doing Was Judas granted forgiveness or eternal punishment It is also averred that Judas went were he wanted to go Judas Iscariot is the classical, ultimate example of treachery and betrayal of trust and relationship in friendship for pure material and selfish gains and is condemned for his sin Nelson Lopes chinchinim

HERALD gets her views CHRISTINA VIEGAS goasheartbeat@ herald- goa. com Tell us a little about your selection on the Indian Jury. How did it happen? I was surprised by a call from the Deputy Director of the festival, Tanu Rai. I am so used to living my activist avatar in Goa, that few people know that I am also a film writer and maker. … And on the pride and honour of being the only Goan on the jury? Being the only Goan on the jury meant that I got to be a bridge for the other jury members to a better understanding of our state. I am always happy to be able to explain that Goa is about much more than just sunshine, sand and the carnival. Are you happy with the selection of the films in this section? We had over 140 films to watch and choose from. What was frightening was the number of films that were technically awful. Since the explosion of the digital age, everyone is buying a digital camera and attempting a movie. But the final selection we made was very satisfying because it was such a wide range of films. From ‘ Bandhon’, which is a classic by Jahnu Barua, to ‘ I. D’. which is a cutting edge experiment with digital shooting, we have a really interesting spread. Isn’t it true that despite celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema, majority of the spotlight is on Bollywood films? Unfortunately Bollywood dominates our national imagination, our myth making and our entertainment. It’s like an enormous elephant in the room. You can’t ignore it - and it takes up an enormous amount of space. Yes, the spotlight is on Bollywood films - but look at the size of that particular elephant! For instance, with due respect to Akshay Kumar, isn’t it strange that he was our chief guest at the inaugural? I am in full agreement with that. If IFFI is meant to encourage great cinema, then surely we should be choosing a personality that better represents that. I see no need to keep choosing ‘ eyeball grabbers’ or ‘ stars’. The stars for IFFI should be great films and great film makers. Do you agree that a commercial film such as ‘ Tohfa’ ( made during a period when Indian cinema saw some of the worst films) fits into an international film festival? I have no say on that. I can only stand up for the films that I personally chose. And we agonized over our choices. It was 22 days of non- stop film viewing before we chose to the best of our abilities. As jury member, kindly expound on your role? Imagine getting to see films from across India, from all states, in various languages - the best of the output of an entire year of filmmaking. It was a fantastic opportunity. It was also an experience that left me worried. We had to wade through just such enormous volumes of bad films to get to the good ones. A lot of really bad cinema is being produced by India. Money is being spent and spent terribly. We urgently need somebody to step forward and start arming would- be film makers with technical skills. As digital technology gets cheaper we will see an explosion of do- it- yourself directors. The need of the hour is more film institutes, cheaper and more accessible courses and higher standards of teaching. Finally, what would you like to tell our Goan audiences and film delegates from India and abroad about Indian cinema? I was really impressed by the Goan film ‘ Digant’. It is a very simply told story but a very profound one. It tells the story of how Goans are living right now - of loss of identity, loss of land, loss of values. Congratulations to the makers. I was very happy to have a Goan film make it to the shortlist - and one that told the story of real Goa, not the Goa constructed by the tourism department. -- Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal Moira, Bardez Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350

I first met Kolambkar in Kochi, where she was one of the seven regional writers to receive the 2012 Tagore Literature Award, given out by Samsung and Sahitya Akademi. She almost whooped with delight when I spoke to her in Marathi. “It’s good to hear a familiar language so far down south,” she said. She had to rush on to the stage for the ceremony, but I promised to catch up with her back home in Mumbai. A week later I made my way to her home in Mulund. “I wore a nice sari, since you were getting a photographer,” Kolambkar says, laughing irreverently. *Her own point of view *As we settle down to talk about her work, she tells me that she was surrounded by books while growing up in Portuguese-ruled Goa. Though I spoke Konkani, it never occurred to me to write in the language.” While writing one of her stories, Kolambkar found herself describing a scene in Goa where a character says ‘*Aitar fulailo*’ (I had a great Sunday). “It’s a phrase that’s so uniquely Konkani, I couldn’t find any words in Marathi. That’s when it struck me that my thoughts were Konkani. I gave up writing stories in Marathi that day.” Writing in Konkani has been the key to expressing herself in the truest sense, says Kolambkar. “The Konkani word ‘*othambe*’ — droplets that fall off tree leaves and roofs after the rain has stopped — has no substitute in Marathi or any other language. Then are the local trees and fish, which have only Konkani names.” I realise then that the attempt to preserve regional languages isn’t about something abstract like culture. It’s about preserving words that are used to describe real things that may not have a substitute in more popular languages. *The language with five scripts* While the impact of English’s popularity on regional languages is often highlighted, the dominance of major regional languages over dialects, especially in literature, is lesser known. Konkani, which was recognised as a major Indian regional language only in 1992, is written in five scripts — Devnagri, Kannada, Malayalam, Arabic and Roman. (Devnagri is recognised as the official Konkani script by the Sahitya Akademi.) “During the Portuguese inquisition, Goans spread out of the state. They spoke Konkani in the kitchen and adopted whatever local language was spoken outside. As a result, there are Konkani stories written in Malayalam script, which readers in Goa have no clue of. And the Konkani spoken in Gujarat seems frozen in time. It has so many Portuguese terms. In Goa, the Portuguese terms have faded away from popular use.” But Kolambkar is surprisingly positive about regional languages. “People keep saying that regional languages will die out. But I don’t think that is going to happen. Those who learn English get degrees and go abroad for better prospects. In the West, knowing your roots is so important. One day, all those who have settled abroad will want to know more about where they originally hail from. And when that day comes, we need to make sure we have written enough good stories to keep them hooked.”

Re: [Goanet] Konkani should be the primary school medium - by F. Mousinho de Ataide
It is also better to know that Fr. Jaime Couto is known to transliterate Konknni articles of Romi script into Devnagari of people who dont know Devnagari 'barakaddi' and print them in 'Dalgadacho Sondex' to impress that catholics too write in Devnagari script. Padrin Devak fottounk zait, aple porjek fottounk zata? Regarding Fr. Mousinho Ataide, it is high time that he should understand that a priest of his calibre is being used to meet their ends by Devnagari fanatics. Jose Fernandes 2011/3/24 Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão drferdina...@hotmail.com Konkani should be the primary school medium - by F. Mousinho de Ataide http://oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Konkani-should-be-the-primary-school-medium/46753.html This Fr. Mousihno is accustomed to talking rubbish. Infact an Indian fanatic. A couple of times he has written on Herald against Goans like “Hangover of servility” on 29/9/09, etc. The migrant editors entertain such fanatism by Goans against Goans. He has the company of another Fr. Jaime Couto who writes Konkani articles in Devnagri script on ‘Grace News’; a monthly bulletin of Grace Church Margao. 90 percent of Grace Church parishioners will not know to read Konkani in that script. Coming back to this article, I would like to ask Fr. Mousinho if he knows the meaning of mother tongue. What pedagogical science says is to be understood correctly and not to be distorted. Primary education should be in the language a child speaks at home since young. Secondly, it is also proved in science that young children pick up new languages easily as compared to a child grown older. Fr. Mousinho always harped that Portuguese were dictators; so now in democracy if the people want primary education in English, why is he invoking God to avert it? Does he have any responsibility toward the future of our children? Maybe he too like Shashikala want Goans to remain as dropouts of schools or be a graduate and unable to draft a letter in correct English. It is a blatant LIE to state that during the Portuguese era, Christians did primary education in Portuguese. There are schools and convents still existing in Goa which imparted primary education in English, and Catholics, Hindus as well as Muslims attended them. Those who did in Portuguese, continued in Lyceum in the Portuguese language. The love for Goa’s identity Fr. Mousinho is talking of is a distorted one. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

But the long-term goal is also to preserve this music and ensure that it survives the test of time. Rather than 'disposing' or selling off these records (wherever available) it would be best if they could be protected and preserved for the future generations. Of course, the minefield of copyright and permissions needs to be gone through before reproduction and replication can be thought of. An appeal to all: please take care of any old records if you have them... on day this might be the only link to Konkani cataram's musical past. Thanking you, * (Jose Salvador Fernandes) * Secretary (Mob: 9881810832) * Press Release * In the untimely death of Dr. (Prof) Olivinho Gomes, Goa has lost a prolific research-oriented writer. This was the refrain at the meeting jointly organised by Goa Konkni Akademi (GKA) and Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) at GCCI Hall, Panaji on Friday, August 07, 2009 to condole the death of Dr. Gomes, ‘a great Konknni stalwart who was equally at ease in Romi as well as Devnagori script.’ N. Shivdas, president of GKA said that Dr. Gomes was a widely-travelled writer and stated that Goa will always ‘feel his absence’ in the field of reaserch-oriented writing. Shivdas also made a mention of Dr. Gomes’ celebrated story, *Mon Oddtta, Mon Oddonam*, set in St. Estevam, his native village. Premanand Lotlikar, President of DKA said that in the passing away of Dr. Gomes, DKA has lost a fatherly figure and spoke about the DKA-commissioned book, *The History of* *Konknni Literature in Romi Script*. Authored by Dr. Gomes, Lotlikar disclosed that the eminent writer did not live to see the book, to be released soon, in print. Adv Radharao Gracias spoke of his association with Dr. Gomes during the days of the Konknni Movement and made a reference to *Village Goa*, Dr. Gomes’ ‘intensely written book on village life.’ Although *Village Goa* is a study of Chandor, the well-researched book is a mirror of any village in Goa, he said. Dr. Gomes’ love for Konknni was immense, Gracias declared, and also reminded about his decision to let go a lucrative IAS posting in the Customs. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Akademi of Goa said that although Dr. Gomes received the Sahitya Akademi Award for translation, the ‘crab mentality’ in the Konknni world was responsible in denying him the award for ‘creative writing’. He proposed that both GKA and DKA institute a scholarship in memory of Dr. Gomes for Konknni research as also a book on his life, which he truly deserved. Dr. Bicaji Ganecar, Cyriaco Dias and Estev Varella from St. Estevam also spoke on the occasion. A message received from Fr. Pratap Naik, Director of TSKK, Porvorim was also read. Prominent among those who attended the condolence meet were Pandharinath Lotlikar, former director, Doordarshan Kendr, Alexyz, cartoonist and the family members of Dr. Gomes. Floral tributes and a minute’s silence were observed at the beginning of the meet. Jose Salvador Fernandes, Secretary, DKA compered and proposed the vote of thanks. PHOTO CAPTION: GKA President N. Speaking on the ocassion the octogenarian Master Vaz was overwehlemed at the opening of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, as he completes 75 years performance on stage today.Incidentally his entire family past and present (six sons and 3 daughters )have had their innings on tiatr stage. He said he earned the sobriquet of Master Vaz because while his father was addressed as Mr Vaz he was called Master Vaz but that name remained immortal and he is not known by his real name. He was full praise for the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who not only promised but also fullfilled his promise of a Tiatr Academy. In a repentent tone he however made a fervent appeal to do justice to Konkani (apparently in Roman script ) for this is our mother and we cant forget her this was plea earned a thunderous applause from the audience. He invoked the blessings of St Cecilia and St Francis Xavier the Patron Saints revered by tiatrists for the success of the tiatr. Earlier Director of Art Culture Mr Prasad Lolayekar impressed upon the audience that the Government was keen to promote tiatr. He mentioned that tiatr audience membership far excelled that of nataks in Maharashtra, Gujarat and even Bengal vis a vis ratio of population in those States. He further added that while the initial sum was a mere 15 lacs the Chief Minister who also holds the portfolio of Art Culture has made a budgetary provision of an one time grant of one crore and fifty lacs for the infrastructure et al. He also stated that Goa was the first state in the country to have a Cultural Policy unlike other states . This policy was formulated under the guidance of Dr Nandkumar Kamat. The Tiatr Academy is the result of this policy. Tiatr as a performing art -- it has become a symbol of Goan culture and despite odds censorship by the erstwhile Portuguese regime or it being relegated to the stature of entertainment for the lowly placed section of the society or financial constraints it has survived without Government support since the beginning of the 20th century. It centers around a story with around in parts of the order of six to seven and intermingled with cants and cantaram . Each tiatr costs around Rs.15,000 to 20,000 for high profile tiatrists numbering 10. There are 2000 tiatrs staged per annum and the audience member ship is a whopping seven lacs nearly two thirds of the population of Goa (14 lacs at 2001 census) including 4 lacs of migrants . Politicians in power or those aspiring to be one know too well the emotive appeal of thetiatr asit acts as a barometer of their social standing or their performance as this form of performing arts vibes strongly with the masses. However all promised but none fulfilled . It provides not only entertainment invoking guffaws of laughter but it depicts social evils, provides moral education to society and above all reflects the pulse of the society from time to time. With almost 500 feasts being celebrated in Goa on any given day all 365/366 days of the year, no feast is complete without a tiatr -- a must see . There are two books written thus far by Fausto Da Costa and another by Wilmix Wilson Mazarello, another one remembering the deceased is on the way by Kokoy John Gomes. Tiatrist or Konkani playwrights can broadly be classified as those deceased, those performing until Liberation of Goa, those post Liberation and those since the beginning of the 21st century. Even Christians used Latin for religious rites very long time back, but that dint mean latin would be our language. today the govt is funding migrant schools in urdu and kannada for the migrants. But Konkani is not even a subject in this schools. Is this the govt of Goans. Digamber is pumping 50 crores on urdu schools in margao. Our owls or old goverement schools are falling down in velsao n everywhere. Where is Konkani, forget even marathi. Parrikar dont push Marathi just because marathi is language of your schooling and prayer. konkanim is your mother tongue. The MGP still has notions of that Maharashtrian designs. Even after years they cant take the word Maharashtra of that party. The issue right now is not the script of the language. It s the issue about giving that status to Konkani as it really deserves. We should not fall prey to the fact that just because Roman script will be recognised, we should allow Marathi too, to be the official language of Goa. Konkani in Devnagri script is and shall be the official language of Goa. We christians have to accept this fact. I take great pride in opening the pages of Sunaprant on Goanews. Let us not allow marathi chauvinists to make merry by promising us the Roman script allibi. Christian MLAs should not fall prey to this googly. Lets resolve the issue as it is. Konkani in the Devnagri script is the Official Language of Goa. And important thing be that its used officially too in signages, compulsory for jobs and for all official matters. Marathi may be used along wiht status to Roman Script on par wiht Devanagri. But surely not Marathi on equal status. We too are goans and we dont speak marathi anywhere. Parrikar we are already under danger of being eliminated by this influx of migrants. Lets save our goem for ourselves. Dont get another maratha invasion on goa. Konkani amchi mai bhas tich amchi raj bhas. n thats in Roman Script. But i know to write in Devnagri also n proud to do so. Konknni bhasechea mogan Beny Pereira Dubai - UAE
Re: [Goanet] Origin of word Tarvotti - help
Hi Selma, The word 'tarvotti' mean seamam or sailer. In Konknni, Tarum' means 'ship', and the person who works on the tarum 'ship' is 'tarvotti.' The word 'tarvotti' has nothing do with the words of any othe language. I am assuming it is two words, the genesis being tarv, and the addition being otti. So if possible, what is the word tarv, is a Portugeuse word absorbed by our language, or does it have a Konkani origin. Any help appreciated. selma
Re: [Goanet] tiatrist
Becoz of this type of narrow thinking, today so called 'renowned tiatrists' could not deliver anything of different kind or level to the tiatr goers... Jose On 6/13/08, Eugene Correia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Where on earth did Jose find the distinction between professional and commercial triatrists. I think Jose himself is confused, while Paul makes a different point altogether. The term professional was hardly used to make separation. For all practical purposes, they were one and the same. For very few, the stage was the only source of income. If in this respect they are called professional then it is technically correct. Ligorio Fernandes was a writer and his first job was aa a watch repairer. As for Tomazinho Cardozo, his primary job was as a teacher. He is a tiatrist in all the sense of the word. It does not matter where he has put his plays -- kala academy or elsewhere. He has put his plays on states outside of kala academy. It is a different matter whether one can call him a renowned tiatrist. It is a subjective matter. Eugene
Re: [Goanet] Tiatrist
Dear Paul, Kindly remember that you are confused between a professional tiatrist and commercial tiatrist. Today we have only commercial tiatrists and not professional tiatrists. We had professional artists in the name of Prem Kumar, Souzalin, Ligorio Fernandes, etc. If you are watching the tiatrs ypu'll come to know the difference between professional and commercial tiatrists. with luv, Jose On 6/12/08, Paul Mascarenhas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Goanetters The word tiatrist means a proffesional dramatist. This person is available to act in any plays if he is free for a payment. Mere acting for a village tiatrs, or for kala academy competition does not make one a renowned tiatrist. I have noticed that Tomasin Cardoz has been called a renouned tiatrist. Could some one tell me on which stage except for kala academy competition and village feast has he acted ? on what ground is he been asked to speak for the tiatrist ? He is only a konkani writer.
