New Topic!
In my few years of being on here...we've danced around the topic, but never officially talked about it..so here it goes: Body armor...anyone wear it (besides inside the suits)? If so what type, where? Recently I had the displeasure of meeting a young man at a stop sign. I was about to do a California roll (about 5-8mph) in a new subdivision where no one lives yet. Looked, slowed, no one coming, about to release the clutch and brakes...boom out of the corn of my eye comes this kids "flying" about 60. I reacted, but was already turning. Cold...mid forties, warm tires, but not on the edges, to much brake grab, lockup and down I go. Slow speed roll off bike, (quite neat actually!) hit helmet on payment, shoulder, hip, etc. Kid took off, never looking back (but he saw me go down!) Joe Rocket suit worked quite well. Not a high speed slide, but no signs of wear except where I straddled the bike and hit the exhaust pipe (didn't feel it). Small chunk out of the helmet (time for a new one anyway). Bent my pinkie, quick straightening (Medic!) The examined the SV for damage. One cracked panel with minor scrap...nothing else. Few squirts of super glue, she's OK. No bruised ego just my shoulder hip. Fact is I didn't realize I had hit my hip. Joe Rocket suit has pads in shoulders, elbows Knees. Nothing in the hips. Seriously think (almost 2 weeks later it still hurts)a hip armor would have helpedany experiences to compare? Shawn Pearsall

RE: one bike?
I have to say Jay can select my mode of transport for me anytime. He was right on the Odyssey Minivan (hey this is a 2 wheel list there feller!) and the SV650S is one hell of a small inexpensive sport bike. I stole mine ($4500), but the Canadian version ( UK too...don't underestimate the Brits!) is now coming to the States late this year. Smooth, lifts the front end real easy, point and shoot, great braking, great mileage, $6199. Cheap insurance too! Nick: It is not necessary to hit a read only format...your reputation has not been severely damaged...merely man handled by Kevin and the rest of us. The important aspect is the fact that you acknowledged a potential for errors, (heck they happen to all of us) but you're Man enough to take your lumps and then professionally respond with additional expertise on the subject matter. Terry Baker went through a simple bit of hell to get his bike back together (any married guy with bikes does!)He was simply dissatisfied with the level of service receive verses indicated or promised. These are the days of the internet. All the more reason to work diligently at protecting your reputation. Nothing leaves "our shops...collectively" until we know it's done right. It will cost you more up front...but as you can see, substantially less in the long run. Your comments, experience and insight are welcome on any list. But as soon as any of us offer them, we are open to comments from the peanut gallery. It's a fact of life, but I do not consider on problem/instance and trend setting experience. I'm always more impressed by how one takes their lumps, than gets back on the horse and goes for a ride You might have a small case of saddle sores...but your back on the horse dammit! ABS HU Return
Tom: (Jeff S. in Bergen too!) And all involved...make sure you ask your dealer for the parts back off your bike. The local shop here (which initially behaved strangely) actually did a great job replacing my HU. Parry Sound - been a few times, great folks and again some great riding. Folks: As most of you veterans can tell, I've been quite busy, so my time on line has greatly diminished (that's good for those who usually get a ration of smart ass remarks from me ;) ) I met with Stan Jon on a recent trip...where we rode into Parry Sound on the "normal" sport bike rally weekend. Thomas O'brian rode up the same day and we all discovered simultaneously that the rally was shifted to the 2nd weekend of July (a first...since even the Parry Sound Information booth welcomed the bikers on July 1st!) Rain showers (and partially slim tires) kept me from meeting with Thomas, but dinner with Stan Jon was "eventful" and fun!. But to keep this short, I did hit the rally the following weekend. (have pictures to prove it!) Met one new GTS owner...gave him the crash course on GTS upgrades in about 5 minutes (I must have seemed like I was a GTS drone.blah blah blah...) No,I do not own a GTS (yet). However I have the opportunity to purchase one. I have been collecting as much info as I can all winter. I now have a full factory service manual. I bought this first to understand some of the technical features. I do our own service. I have been biking for 30+ years, but all I have ever owned are Hondas. I have 4 CBXs and a 650 turbo, a Gb500, and 8 others currently in the stable and know how obsolete technology can be a bummer. The switch in marques is a real change. But I fell in love with this bike a few years ago, and now have the chance to buy. It has 3000 original miles and is absolutely mint showroom and hardly been ridden. We have not yet agreed on a price, so perhaps you can tell me what the market commands for a unit like this? The net has not been much help. Thanks for your answers
I took all your responses folks (abs issue) and I'm putting together a polite professional response (hard to do personnally on this representative of Yamaha's tactics) but I still believe we as a group are helping to make the bike a safer vehicle and these companies more responsive to the internet knowledge base. I also strongly feel most dealers in this area really don't see the big picture (I arrived at the shop with my 99 Odyssey...business murals plates, logo shirts, new trailer, GTS inside, with other bike parts (R5) in the trailer) .people that own a bike usually buy more than one, and have lots of friends that want to buy bikes too. (I know a pipe dream...but making companies into better customer service driven entities is my personal crusade!) So the e-mails have been clipped, a fax put together to the dealer (he's stuck in the middle of all this crap too...hence a phone in display of our knowledge would fall on deaf ears) and a polite message to Larry the Yamaha RT indicating the error of his ways. I've got time...72 here Thursday winter storm warnings for a major blizzard starting this afternoon...ending Sunday...gotta love Western NY this time of year. Travel plans this monthThursday 16th leave for Nashville...trailering a piece of equipment, 22nd ...Nashville to Raleigh..drive to Sumter Becton Dickenson Meeting 23rd...then around the Raleigh area Friday 23rd...home Hope to see some of you out thereThanks again for your help. Load of Crap from Yamaha!
Yup you guessed it.my bike is now back at the dealergood weather here so they tested the bike on dry pavement and gravel. Apply both brakes.abs works (he says). Use the rear brake, he can get the wheel to lock up...he calls Yamaha (Corp Engineering...then Cavenaugh...who now doesn't want to talk to anyone about this...he deferrs the technicians to the Regional Technician now handling the cases on a case by case basis.) Yamaha sayslocking up the rear wheel WITHOUT using the front brake will always cause the abs to lock up the rear wheel (or some line of shit like that). I say Bull Shit...this is not a linked abs system. it never did this before up until 10K miles, Yamaha RT says he will authorize the replacement of the unit, but what am I going to do for Yamaha after it doesn't change anything. My service guy indicated...Would I pay Yamaha $2,000 for the upgrade? Would I blast a message to the list indicating how wrong we really are for pushing Yamaha into this replacement policy? This is shit guys gal...if you can tell I'm pissed your right. I've been getting crap customer service from K-mart to Yamaha this week and this stuff really gets my goat. Here's what I need: Those people with the new HU's..please go try this test for usfind some slight gravel, lock up the brakes (both) to confirm your abs works...careful more back than front here) Then try just your back brakes...to see if the pulse or lock up. Keep in mind Yamaha is saying the rear wheel is "supposed" to lock up if only the rear brake is appliedI think this is crap Those without replacement units...try this as well...less see how much Yamaha really knows about their own technology Please prove me wrong Shawn P
Just a test
Sorry folks new laptop..trying to get rid of the Mime format SP
Re: A quick trip
Allan: Free Housing in Rochester NY about 60 miles from Buffalo.I would caution a ride up north without electrics, etc. Winter can last well into late April a low a a few hours north of Toronto...the U P of Michigan can exhibit similar patterns. Of course you'll need to remember that these areas also use a lot of sand/silt salt on the roads so there will be a few exciting turns that await you! Keep us posted Shawn P

AMA concerning OHV
Let's start a real battle here folks (I love to see the wild ass ideas!) For Christ sake Ken and the rest of you constitutionally minded members. Going to Yellowstone and sitting in the middle of a field listening to nothing but nature is one of God's greatest gifts.why you might think mixing a gasoline powered device with total silence is beyond me. Wrapping yourself around such idiotic ideas as "if you let them win one..you've lost forever..." is such crap. The facts are simple, more people, less land...you want to ride ...go ride...just leave the National Parks as they were designed to be...a Friggin National Park! It's called compromisingif you don't want any land left to take your kids to..pave the hole friggin continent and invite the public. This is a personal battle for meI have vacation property in Canada (in family since 1922) the number of people that ride there bikes, dirt bikes, mini bikes, or just plain walk onto MY land...sit on MY God Damn Dock and Smoke a Stoogy and drink a bottle of wine to watch the sunset(seriously) and disrupt my personal space it disgusting. Instead of fighting the government, use some personal moderation.. This is the land of the free...but remember for every bike rider there's a bookworm that just wants to sit undisturbed and pontificated the dust in their navel! Motorcycles have their place...on private landsnot on public lands like national parks. The AMA does some great things to help promote and protect our sport...this is definately not one of them. It would be much more useful for them to promote save gun toting while riding as far as I'm concerned...hmmm the GTS Glove box could qualify as a concealed weapon location couldn't it? My bitchin for the day! Shawn P

Harley Help!
Harley: As a Yamaha Tech you might be able to help me. I'm stuck in a catch 22 here in good ol Rochester NY. My service tech Brian at Hollink Motorsports (only dealer closest to me) doesn't know squat about the GTS...so he did the usual check of the HU (snow and ice on the ground three weeks ago) HU test worked fine, Yamaha Engineering says the HU is OK...now I would load the damn thing into a trailer and tow it 30 miles because it was OK...the rear wheel has locked for the past 9-10 months...but Brian won't do any work on the bike cause Yami says the test tells you its ok...$42.00 for him to run the HU diagnostics.not a happy camperdo you have a way of communicating internally throughout the dealership network...would you mind convincing Brian of his errors...Inow have to take the bike over to him..againdrag the brake and show the resultant skid mark...then leave the bike. Easy if you work 9-5.as you will see I'm always on the road (VT, NH, CT, and Long Island now til Friday) so dropping off a bike is real tough to docan you offer any advice/assistance? Shawn Pearsall - Original Message - From: Harley Baldwin [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Multiple recipients of list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, February 21, 2000 11:39 AM Subject: New GTSer 1st time questions Esteemed Colleagues, I have been "lurking" on this lst for a few weeks whikle trying to decide about a 93 GTS purchase that recently came into my shop on trade. I have received MANY helpful hints and comments from many of you(for which I am SO grateful!), although I was quite "disturbed" to hear/read of the HU problem-which seems to be fairly prevalent, but after a thorough ride and "check" (Thank you , Kevin Hawkins!) have decided to "take the plunge" and buy it. I do have a few questions regarding levers and "lever throws". On the clutch side, it is obviously a hydraulic actuation, therefore no adjustments are possible "up top" near the perch. However, is there something "down under" that can adjust the throw for that since my hands are very small, and I can barely reach the lever from it's resting positio?? In addition, the "catch point" is VERY late, meaning it engages at the very end of the movement, making starting from a stop a bit problematic for me... On the brake side: the brakes work VERY well (see above), BUT the brake lever feels quite "sluggish"- like dragging it through molasses or something. Is this normal (probably not), and I see that the are some "linkage points" that could (or NEED to) be oiled/lubricated to make it more responsive?? Is graphite best, or just WD40, or cable/chain lube?? Perhaps there are after-market levers with an inward "dog-leg" shape that would be able to replace BOTH sides--thus solving both problems??I'm going to check my various sources, but any ideas or suggestions are welcome!! Thanks in advance, and I hope these little "quirks" don't get in the way of my enjoyment of this very special bike. I look forward to swapping info. with all of you. Harley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh yee heathens of little faith! GREAT NEWS! - WE WIN! I just had a call from Jordan Cavanaugh at Yamaha. They have obviously been thinking long and hard about this one and they have decided to replace any defective HU free of charge and will reinmburse anyone who has replaced one at their own expense if they provide receipts!!! No warranty required, no proof of maintenance. What you need to do is take the bike into a Yamaha dealer and have them confirm the HU is at fault. Get them to call Jordan Cavanaugh at (714) 761 7435 M-F 8:30 - 5 or 1 800 962 7926 to confirm they are to replce the HU free of charge. Jordan said anyone should feel free to call him and I'd think it might be a good idea if he got a few thankyou calls. Consequently DO NOT SENT ANY BAD PUBLICITY LETTERS TO ANYONE. Yamaha DO care greatly about their customers afterall. I realize that this is not necessarily a permanent long term fix, but I think it is a grand gesture on Yamaha's part and we probably need to futher discuss maintenance issues with them to ensure longevity of the new HU. I'll be out of the office from end of today and back on Tuesday so I'll be out of touch by email for a while. Merry Christmas everyone. Yamaha is the best! Cheers Joe. -- *** * Harley M. Re: Lands End shirt
colors can be modified for example dark denium can have the touring society in silver, etc...I must say even I was impressed with the quality of the shirts too! Thanks all for the kind comments... SP snip Got it as you will see by my post to the group. Now that I've got the one in hand it will be easier to decide on other stuff from a color perspective. I'll get together my wish list for the outlet store next time you're around it. I know I want a Squall jacket, but also want a couple of knit shirts for work. Color is the hard part since the Bike is red, the GTS is blue and the rest is black, doesn't leave many colors for it to show up on. Thanks for the efforts...Bob B.
Re: NHSTA form/and other such fluffola to the good Ranger
Boys boys boys geez I go away for a few days and you guys start trashing the placegood comments all aroundhell looks like we might be ready to take this on the Jerry Springer show soon! Keep those ideas and comments flowing Idely watching the fireworks Shawn P PS (I've been seeing how far a 2000 windstar will fly if you accidently drive off the end of a dead end street in TX at 2:30 in the morninganswer about 45 feet! and air bags smell like shit burnt twice! Minor problem, not damage except a bruised egojust landed hard enough to deploy the bagswhich shuts off your carand makes you walk home)
Jay outta know
mm cough emm cough, (Sound of SA#2 stuffing foot in his mouth) Really the point is similar to when I sould stereo equipment. Every yahoo would come in with the same two questions 1) "Holding a Consumer Reports Magazine"...where ..this model 2) Show me your best speakers! I'd do the same for each client...ask them a bit about what they listened too (like..Allen what type of riding to you do now, what kinds of bikes have you had in the past, what did you like about each one, why, what didn't you like, why?..etc) Then I'd pull out their favorite copy of Michael Jackson Thriller BIG OL YUCK!...and let them listen to all the speakers in their price range... Moral of the story: Bikes are like stereo equipment. Everyone will like or dislike different things. All that matters is if you like the way the rpoduct works and it fits your lifestyle. Now a V-Max with an 8-track.hmmm
Re: Would you buy another GTS?
Allen: It's illegal to have a mistress in the country (either that or very bloody expensive after your wife finds out) Now that's not the reason I have a GTS, but this bike is a better ride than any mistress! I'd opt for another one in a heartbeat if I were a rich man with no wife! It will make you a better rider than you really are. Handle more of the challenges of the road (cages, potholes in the middle of a turn, going to fast into a turn, etc) than any other bike on the market. You will drop it (it's a pig at slow speeds) You will hate the stock tires...take it out in the dealer parking lot, dump a quart of bleach on the road and waste no time in removing as much of the 202 from your bike as quickly as possible. Walk back in to the dealer and have them replace the tires with anything else (seriously...anything like clumps of moss, paper mache, rubber bands, used band-aids, etc) The brakes and front suspension is unbelievable. You will either love the ride...or hate it. Most people that hate the ride only trail run them for 10-15 minutes...DON'T! Ride the bike for 40-60 miles...you will begin (hell most of us are still learning how much we love this thing, even after 10-15-60,000 miles...one rider has over 160K) to understand the wonder behind the magical engineering we call the GTS. How's that for non sexual description of my mistress! Oh and by the way, unless you're a smart ass.have a warped sense of humor, can handle more than a thimbal of Canadian Beer (Kurt's record is three thimbals!) don't bother signing up to our list! Have fun Shawn Pearsall 93 GTS-1000 71 R5 350 (Heck I think I'll get a Pole Barn now for all my toys too!)
Cap Update!
Roger and crew: Go ahead and have the logo shrunk for cap fitting (I think Linda recommended we loose the Touring Society verbage to make it fit) This will mean a picture of the bike GTS will be on the caps...sounds great to me) Kurt thinks I look like and idiot anywayyou should see me in a cap...so I never thought about them.now plastic underwear...h Thats Kurts bag! #2 PS: A short thank you for all the comments of supportI truly appreciate them. Just wish it hadn't taken so long.
On the road again!

Lands End Outlet update
No seconds on Denium shirts still folks, besides I'm being told there is a corporate policy shift regarding the logo's and outlet sales...not sure what that is yetI'll know more today. I was at the Outlet late yesterdaythey have new deniums (light blue and dark blue like Jays) on the rackI've scoped them out and some guy comes over to argue with his wife about getting one shirt. They piss and moan for about 7 minutesI'm getting flustered cause I just want to reach in a grab a handful of them (they're $23.50 each) but I don't want to rip them out of his hands.. He finally says, well I'll walk around a bit and come back...there's lots here...they walk off...I scoop in and grab 15 of them (all the xxl's I can find) and as I walk away I her the wife scream...well ^*%(*%* damn it just go get one then.he walks back and there's 4 shirts left! Funny to watch from the safety of the counter...couldn't have been 45 secondsso LE will tell me if I can put the logo's on my corp shirts later today...I'll keep ya posted. If we can greatI'll keep shopping for you but it looks like it will be a while before the real cheap stuff comes in.I just bought a ton cause we have no sales tax this week so I save 8%.yeah I know cheap bastardWhen ya watch the bottom line you can call me what ever ya want folks!
